12:00et après retiring from the Los Angeles Lakers,
12:02Magic Johnson returns to coach the team.
12:05Having Magic back was really something my dad wanted
12:09because he never wanted the tie cut with Magic.
12:13And maybe coaching was the right answer.
12:16I never wanted to coach.
12:18Dr. Buss Hill, can you do this for me?
12:20And when he hit me with that one, then I said, yeah, okay.
12:24I am happy to be back with the Laker family.
12:28Any way to predict what your coaching style will be like?
12:32Aggressive.
12:35When Magic came back to coach, I thought it was great.
12:39His motivational speeches, I mean,
12:40you would want to run through a wall playing for Magic.
12:43He was hard, man. He practiced the shit out of us.
12:46He'd run us like Pat Riley used to run.
12:48That's all he knew.
12:51To see him come in and try to deal with some of these young players,
12:56it was hard for Magic to see players not hustle all the time.
13:00They say now we don't practice hard.
13:04We'll play hard in the game.
13:06They say we don't want to hear about the 80s.
13:08I understand that.
13:08We're the 90s team.
13:10You're old.
13:11You're old.
13:12I was a baby, you know, I didn't have a clue about, you know,
13:17the things that they had to go through to get to a championship level.
13:20And that used to drive Magic crazy because he saw something that maybe was in us,
13:25but we wasn't ready for that yet.
13:28When I was an assistant coach, and Magic used to always say,
13:31can these guys run a three on two?
13:33We're going down on offense, three players on two.
13:35You got to score.
13:36Well, we would throw the ball away.
13:38That was perplexing to him.
13:40You come in to understand that what we had was special.
13:45And you see that now.
13:47He was trying to figure out why, you know,
13:49we couldn't get it done because he thought it was just
13:53fucking easy, you know?
13:54We don't have a losing streak.
14:00Before practice, he said, come on, everybody, let's go outside.
14:03Walk outside, we're fine, weather's great.
14:07So he was like, everybody take a deep breath.
14:09Like, enjoy this, enjoy the air.
14:11Because some of you motherfuckers ain't gonna be here next year to enjoy this good air.
14:15You like this weather out here?
14:17It's nice and sunny?
14:19Shit, you wait, you think I'm fucking with you?
14:21We was like, oh, shit.
14:25I just had to put my head in the towel.
14:27I'm like, you fucking guys want to be in Cleveland?
14:29Magic got to the floor again, farting with the ejection.
14:33Here comes Battle, he's gone, Magic's gone.
14:38He used to say, Coop, you know what?
14:41I'm not gonna be here long.
14:44So I did it all the way to the end of the season.
14:48Dr. Buss hit.
14:49What you think, I said.
14:51I never want to do that ever again.
14:56How would you assess your performance as a coach?
14:58It really doesn't matter how good I can be.
15:01It really doesn't.
15:02The players gonna make you great or they gonna make you lousy.
15:06One way or another.
15:08I don't think we made the playoffs that year.
15:10That was a big blow.
15:12The Lakers playoff stretch for so many years have been broken and, you know, I was a part of that.
15:23Jerry Buss was not thrilled because it was the first time he'd ever missed the playoffs and that hit him hard.
15:29It was that feeling of, are we ever gonna get to the top again?
15:35Did we have so much success that we're now gonna pay for it at the bottom?
15:39The Lakers sold a lot of winning.
15:45Be a Laker fan, you're gonna win.
15:48And what a team can't sell winning, what they sell us is hope.
15:53And we couldn't sell hope because we were that bad.
15:57There was no hope for us to win.
16:15I like the mornings.
16:16I like the afternoons.
16:17I like the people.
16:19And, um, I love the animals.
16:21And that's what you're surrounded with all the time.
16:24When you're dealing with horses, you are just really focused.
16:30All of a sudden, it's years later and you don't even know.
16:34So it was hard for me to sit there and go, I wonder what's happening over at the Forum.
16:39You know, Hollywood Park was right next door to the Forum.
16:41So then I would, I could train horses there and then go over and eat dinner with my dad at the Forum Club.
16:47He'd get the racing form and look at my horses and say, you know, you might want to do this with this one.
16:53So we were just probably best friends more than father, son, maybe.
16:57That's close.
16:58I mean, my brother was a wild man, you know.
17:01I mean, he was the partier.
17:04You know, my father didn't help that.
17:07Dad's going out to this club.
17:09Let's go.
17:09He taught him how to, how to gamble.
17:13My dad wanted that partner.
17:15And Jimmy was his partner for that.
17:17You know, the horse racing business, it was coming off of its peak.
17:23You could see it was declining.
17:25If it was something that was raking in a lot of dough, I think we'd still have a stable.
17:32But I think my dad wanted Jimmy to find something that fit more what he wanted the family to,
17:39to focus on as opposed to the horses.
17:41He said it was time for me to understand the, the basketball business.
17:45And can you come back?
17:47He said, I want you to work with Jerry West so you can learn.
17:53And I said, well, what am I learning?
17:54Well, one of the most important things is scouting.
17:57If you were going to learn how to scout, you would learn from Jerry West,
18:02because he is one of the best, if not the best ever.
18:07Do you know how many people want that job?
18:10You know, Jim was chosen to learn that part of the business.
18:15Salary caps and contracts.
18:17It was kind of a whole mathematical thing.
18:21And Jimmy is really good with numbers.
18:23I like to apply math to, you know, sports, obviously, or anything else like that.
18:30Now, was he going to be successful?
18:32Well, that kind of comes down to individuality.
18:37The Lakers are losing.
18:39Magic's retired.
18:40So my dad wanted to bring us back together as a family,
18:45because that's where he drew his strength.
18:48But at that point, my siblings and I really didn't spend all that much time together.
18:54We came together for family events, which weren't very often.
19:00We just didn't really have similar lifestyles.
19:04And I had always admired the women who posed in Playboy.
19:09I admired the magazine.
19:14I was over 30, comfortable in who I was, in my sexuality, being a woman.
19:22And I'd always admired the women who posed in Playboy.
19:27I admired the magazine.
19:29I knew Hugh Hefner through my dad.
19:32And I thought I would like to see if I would be considered for the magazine.
19:39And I didn't tell my dad because I didn't want him to call in a favor.
19:44I went through the test photo shoot and I was accepted.
19:58I took my pictures at the forum, which was unusual.
20:03As a woman in this business for all these years, that's always, I've always felt left out
20:10in terms of not being able to go into the locker room and not knowing that feeling of camaraderie.
20:17And so, to me, that was mysterious and sexy to go into the locker room and, you know, make believe.
20:25Finally, when I told my dad, he had no idea.
20:29He said the funniest thing.
20:30He said, it's the first issue of Playboy magazine I haven't read in 26 years.
20:35You wouldn't look at it?
20:37No, he would not look at it.
20:39It was something that I was very proud of.
20:43It was empowering for me to express my sexuality in a way that I wanted to.
20:50When she posed for Playboy, I was aghast.
20:56I was concerned.
20:58Would the promoters, would the agents and the managers look at her differently?
21:06I was just worried people would objectify her more and not look at her as a serious
21:15businesswoman. But I understand the liberation that she felt from doing that.
21:22My dad's attorney was like, you're going to hurt your chances.
21:26You know, you're, you're, you know, people are not going to accept this from you.
21:30But it wasn't a business decision I made.
21:32That was a personal decision that I wanted to do for me.
21:38Dr. Buss did exactly what he wanted to do.
21:42And didn't care what you thought about it.
21:44Jeannie Buss is the same way.
21:47And she should be.
21:49That was a time in my life.
21:51And then I was on to the next thing.
21:53And by then my dad wanted me to move into the basketball side of things.
22:01And in 1995, I was named an alternate governor of the Lakers.
22:08Joining the board was a huge step to, to really understanding how this business works.
22:15Jeannie and I and the guys from Sacramento were the only ones that, you know, felt like we were
22:22under 80 years old. That generation didn't take kindly to women in the boardroom.
22:26In a room of 100 people, there might have been two other women besides me.
22:32I was in line at the buffet, you know, loading up my plate.
22:37And all of a sudden someone grabs my butt.
22:42You know, at first I was like so shocked and then I was embarrassed.
22:51You feel violated.
22:54Like a piece of dirt.
22:57I remember when it happened to me like it was yesterday and it's gotta be 35 years ago.
23:06I didn't take it so much as a sexual advance, but more like a putting me in my place.
23:14You don't get a seat at the table. You're just a piece of ass.
23:21I didn't know about that.
23:23I think it would have hurt him too much for me to tell him.
23:36I didn't really want to tell anybody.
23:39That's what happens to you. You're ashamed that it happened.
23:44But as time went on, I realized that,
23:47you know, it's not my shame to carry.
23:55It made me more determined than ever to be successful in the business.
23:59I saw this woman emerge in confidence.
24:06So I started to think about leaving.
24:09And so now her position as the general manager of the forum was available.
24:14My dad said, as your boss, I would like to offer you the job.
24:20As your father, I'm recommending you don't take it.
24:24You will have no social life.
24:26Running the building was a huge responsibility.
24:30It's 200-plus nights a year, long days, and that was challenging.
24:41It was a lot of work,
24:44but the thing that I gravitated to the most was creating success for myself in the family business.
24:51My father was taking a little bit more time off at that time, so he just wanted everything in place.
25:02He called me in and said, hey, John, do you know anything about women's basketball?
25:07And I go, uh, not a thing.
25:10He says, well, me neither.
25:14I am pleased to announce that the Board of Governors approved the concept of the NBA,
25:20establishing the Women's National Basketball Association.
25:23And he said, David Stern called, and they're starting a women's league.
25:30And it would be great if I knew that you would be okay heading up a WNBA team.
25:37I mean, I just felt like, should I even do this?
25:41Everything that had happened, the fallout of the lasers, I was racing, I was doing music,
25:48I had gotten married, I was, you know, trying to find my way.
25:52I just liked the enjoyment of a nice, quiet life.
25:55I didn't like being in the limelight.
25:58But, you know, I miss being involved in something big.
26:02I was ready. I was ready to commit myself to women's basketball.
26:09David Stern said to my dad, I assume Jeannie's going to run the WNBA team.
26:15But my dad said, I'm going to have my son Johnny run the team.
26:19So that kind of surprised David.
26:22You know, you'd hear, why wasn't Jeannie the one, you know, she's the woman in the business.
26:27To have a woman run a woman's team really would have been special.
26:31I didn't sit there and say, oh, well, why don't you give it to Jeannie?
26:34You know, why are you picking me to do it?
26:35And I just jumped at the chance, not even thinking about who else might have been chosen for the WNBA.
26:42You could tell when there was, you know, a little tension.
26:45But the end goal was to create sports and, you know, make the most money.
26:51Bring championships to Los Angeles.
26:54Are you going to sit there and hold a grudge forever?
26:56I hope not.
27:02Hey, was a little disappointing the Lakers tonight?
27:04Nah, not at all.
27:05They played their best.
27:06It was a good game.
27:07Yeah?
27:07Happy 90s back?
27:08When they lost in 94, I think people kind of sat down and thought this could be a long haul.
27:14The Lakers could just be another team, although it's hard to envision after living through showtime.
27:19I mean, for me, it was an exercise in how the other half lives.
27:23It wasn't exciting.
27:25It wasn't the same.
27:29Ticket sales dropped.
27:32In 94, in terms of attendance, it was the lowest since Jerry Buss bought the team.
27:38The building did not sell out.
27:40I would say it was, you know, 70% capacity and a lot of empty seats.
27:46I wasn't struck by its emptiness so much as its lack of energy and way reduced start power.
27:55I know, I remember a lot of people fell off, you know.
27:57People didn't care as much.
27:59You know, it wasn't like when the Lakers were, when they repeated in 88 or whatever, you know what I mean?
28:04Who wants to come and watch, you know, guys lose ball games?
28:07In the minds of the public, they were spoiled.
28:10They had seen so much success and if they didn't win a championship, it was a bad year.
28:16Every other owner had businesses, you know, cruise lines, you know, I think my dad did.
28:22This was it.
28:22This was the only one.
28:25When you have everything leveraged, every game was so important because we needed to win,
28:30we needed to keep this up.
28:32We weren't selling tickets.
28:34We couldn't raise ticket prices.
28:37That was not the model that my dad wanted to operate under.
28:42We were going to have to figure it out.
28:46Jerry West sees this really young team and so he brings in a brilliant coach to teach these young
28:55guys how to actually play the game.
28:58Coaching is the most exciting thing you can do legally.
29:02I was really glad to be able to take a young team.
29:07I was a teacher first, coach second.
29:11Him being my friend and someone I've known a long time really had nothing to do with it.
29:16He's one of the smartest basketball minds I have ever been involved with in my life, incredibly smart.
29:23He's probably known as the most intellectual of the coaches, so I find that easy to relate to and I enjoy talking to him.
29:31You know, he was just an old school kind of guy.
29:33And I was like, who is this guy?
29:36I'm Lieutenant Frank Drebin, police squad.
29:38Leslie Nielsen, that was my first impression.
29:41He's a little weird dude.
29:43You're talking about coaching during a cultural change.
29:47Del Harris, underneath his left shoulder, he showed it to us today, thank you very much.
29:51I even got a tattoo.
29:53Trying to be cool with the guys.
29:54I just like to think I'm an adjustable person, you know, you roll with it.
30:01As my career was ending at that point in time,
30:04Del created this position to kind of keep me around a special assistant coach.
30:11He's a great teacher in tremendous basketball mind, but he wanted control.
30:17Del was up all the time, you know, conducting.
30:20Del was old school, so he was all about the X's and O's and doing things the right way.
30:26He wanted real structured organization out there, and that's not how Nick wanted to play.
30:30He wanted his freedom.
30:32They bumped heads.
30:34Like, you can see it was a disconnect there.
30:36There were times where I may do something on the court.
30:40I have to ride it up and in with a masterful face.
30:43Up and under his arm.
30:44Do a little dance or something, and he's hollering, get back on defense, get back on defense.
30:48We have a really talented, competitive, gritty point guard that doesn't like to be told what to do.
30:56Well, that's what the head coach does.
31:00When you're young and you're going to sports, you don't know shit.
31:07You're just playing.
31:08I was just out there hooping.
31:12He probably felt we was playing more, you know, bad basketball than good basketball,
31:16and he's just trying to hone it in.
31:17Just calm down, calm down.
31:19He got labeled as having a bad attitude.
31:25Yeah.
31:26I think it's a bunch of bullshit.
31:28You know, stereotype people give you.
31:30People just see, you know, through the camera lens, through the TV,
31:34you just going crazy, always jabbing at the referee.
31:37Be careful.
31:38There's the knee.
31:39Boy, this guy's got a short temper.
31:42Baby has temper tantrums.
31:43That's what they see.
31:44He said he was trying to get my attention, but he said I ignored him,
31:53and he pulled me out the game, like, in the first quarter.
31:55And we got into this argument, and of course, the media blew it up.
31:59It was blown up, being bigger than it was.
32:04You know, my stubbornness would always be like,
32:07say something first and then shut up, you know, as opposed to just don't say anything.
32:12I didn't like authority.
32:15I didn't like authority, because I never had that.
32:19I never had nobody say, sit your ass down.
32:21I didn't have that.
32:27I grew up in a single parent home.
32:29My mom worked second shift, didn't have a father figure,
32:32and pretty much raised myself.
32:34I've always been a shy person, so I don't know if me playing on the basketball court was
32:49a way for me to let my hair down.
32:52Maybe I was hiding something when I got on the court.
32:55You know, where I grew up, we played against the older guys all the time.
33:00In Kenosha, you know, those guys, they kick your butt, and they weren't playing.
33:04And so you had to get tough quick, or you was going to get dominated.
33:09In basketball, I'm just emotional.
33:11I'm like, like, let's go.
33:15I'm telling you, he was so intense.
33:18He would bring everyone in all the time, like, you with me?
33:20We're going hard.
33:22And it was all about just trying to come together and win.
33:26Nick, Eddie, and Cedric.
33:29That was the nucleus of the team.
33:31It was a great roster, I'm telling you.
33:34That second year in L.A., we were a tight bunch.
33:37Guys, you know, looked out for each other on and off the court.
33:41We played a lot better that second year.
33:43In 94-95, the Lakers came back with the best record they'd had since the Showtime days.
33:48Our team was trending upward at the time.
33:50We were trying to build something.
33:52A capacity crowd.
33:53The Lakers in the playoffs for the first time in two years.
33:56They're making the most of it.
33:58They made it to the second round of the playoffs.
34:01Then the Lakers went on to lose.
34:02But that was definitely progress coming back after not even being in the playoffs.
34:07They led the Lakers to their fourth largest improvement from one season to the next.
34:12The Coach of the Year award.
34:13Why do you think we got Coach of the Year?
34:15Pretty simple.
34:17We played our asses off that year.
34:19I mean, we all felt like we had something to prove.
34:22I mean, we were winning, but not winning like we thought we should.
34:27Jerry said, it's been a long time and I really need a championship.
34:31You know, I just gotta have it.
34:33Well, so did we.
34:37A buddy of mine would say, man, y'all nice, y'all athletic, but y'all ain't gonna win shit.
34:42Because he was like, y'all gotta have some veterans.
34:46Y'all gotta have some veterans.
34:47We played with Magic all summer long at UCLA and it was like, man, Magic still can play.
35:04You know, he came out in 79.
35:06There's no way that this dude can do this at that age.
35:09He was still running the pros out of there.
35:11I had been working out and I worked out every day at UCLA and I play pickup games and I'm playing like Magic.
35:20Even though Irvin has retired from the NBA, he's still dazzling fans.
35:28The fans gave a big welcome home to Magic as he hosted an all-star game in Santa Barbara.
35:39None of us from the beginning understood that there was a difference between HIV and AIDS.
35:43We thought it was the same thing.
35:45We thought this was a death sentence.
35:47And he admitted to me later that he thought the same thing.
35:50It was a lot going on back then.
35:52HIV and AIDS.
35:54People were not educated enough, but finally they got educated.
36:00All the medications came along.
36:02And so he began to think, well, you know, I can do this.
36:05I can come back.
36:06Magic tight guy.
36:08Ronson pulls up from 40 feet.
36:11That's the way you're supposed to end it.
36:13It's like, yeah, he can teach us some shit.
36:15He definitely can teach us some shit.
36:17Why is he playing with us?
36:19We went to him and we're like, hey, dude, jump on.
36:22Let's go.
36:22What about that phone call you and Nick?
36:25Hey, it worked.
36:27We got him back and everybody's happy.
36:30I mean, we want to make a run at it.
36:32I love Eddie and Nick.
36:35Those were my young guys.
36:37For Magic's first practice at LMU, there were cameras all over the place.
36:42Is this going to be like a Showtime 2 out there?
36:45Well, this is the lake show, so we've got to stick with that.
36:50Lake show part two.
36:52We all wanted him, you know what I mean?
36:54Because we knew he was going to take us to another level.
36:57I've been there five times.
36:58I know what it tastes like.
37:00I'd like to go one more time.
37:01Even though he hadn't played for five years, here was a guy that we thought would add to the
37:09maturity of the team.
37:11Now, I come in at 36.
37:14I'm a leader.
37:15I'm making sure that the locker room is straight.
37:17I'm making sure that our heads are straight.
37:19I'm making sure that we're prepared and ready for the game.
37:22And then add what I can on the court.
37:25It's just going to help us out a lot.
37:26And I think the most important thing is his experience and his knowledge of teaching
37:29to help other players be, you know, what they should be.
37:33As a shooting guard, who wouldn't want magic on this team?
37:36From top to bottom, I think every guy was so excited.
37:40I'm sure a guy like Urban would be able to fit in just about any position.
37:45I talked to the kids and I said, now look, I'm bringing him in as a big man.
37:50He's not going to be the point guard, Nick.
37:53He won't be the off guard, Eddie.
37:55He's not going to be the small forward,
37:57said, he'll be a great teammate.
37:59Put me in.
38:05Here comes magic.
38:06Magic's coming in right now.
38:08Listen to this crowd.
38:12The magic is back.
38:13And that's when he makes a quick pass to magic.
38:15I'm sure the key to peel it underneath.
38:18Whatever the 80s showtime felt like, that's what the lake show was feeling like.
38:22Rebound Devon to magic.
38:26This is what the fans have come to see.
38:29It was Panama.
38:30We felt like we were stars, you know what I mean?
38:33Seeing everybody there yelling and screaming and so excited.
38:35Magic running.
38:38Finding Eddie Jones.
38:39That was the first time I ever seen the form packed before the game.
38:46In Los Angeles, over the past four years, hasn't had a whole lot to smile about.
38:51This city is absolutely rejuvenated.
38:53And welcome back, Magic.
38:55It's showtime, baby.
38:57It was sold out.
38:59And it was because of magic.
39:01Immediately, ticket sales are through the roof.
39:04Magic is great.
39:05I don't give a damn how old he is, what he got, what he been through.
39:08That's motherfucking Irving Magic Johnson.
39:10They've won 11 of their last 13.
39:12And Magic's been largely responsible.
39:14And talking to Magic, instead of sitting on the bench talking about it,
39:17I can be in the game and show you how to do it.
39:20I'll say this about his teammates, boy.
39:21Even though Magic's getting all the headlines right now, the others aren't saying a word.
39:24They're just applauding, going along, and still playing even better than before.
39:28We started out pretty hot.
39:30Like, we was really rolling.
39:32And then, you know, things just kind of went south pretty quick.
39:35You know, the young kids, the young guns are coming up.
39:40And here you have the old veteran marshal that's like,
39:42OK, no, no, we're going to do it this way.
39:45It was a rift.
39:47You're talking about greatest point guard in the history of the game.
39:51Whatever Magic says is going to go.
39:53Of course, Dale had to be the one to mesh it.
39:57But he had to be the guy to try to figure it out.
39:59So I'm sure it was really tough on him.
40:02And then, you know, Magic, you know, started saying he wanted the ball more.
40:06And I'm like, well, shit, if he got the ball more, then it won't be in my hands no more.
40:10I'm not going to lie, it was tough.
40:13You know, I was being a little selfish about it, of course.
40:15I think we all were.
40:17I'm not going to tell Magic, no, you can't add a rock.
40:20I'm not going to do that.
40:21They were 29 and 11 after his return and for a while looked every bit the team to beat out West.
40:27We're just fighting each other so much.
40:29Little things like who got the points, whose name was in the paper.
40:33You know, I'm arguing with the referees more.
40:36I'm arguing with Dale more.
40:38And it was a lot of frustration.
40:39It was very hard to watch and very hard to be around at times.
40:43Nick Van Exel won't play for the rest of the regular season.
40:46That's his punishment for shoving referee Ron Garrison in last night's game at Denver.
40:50Oh, man, yeah.
40:52I should have stayed retired, I guess.
40:56It's just a super bad message, you know, it's just bad.
41:00And I want him to know that you just don't do it.
41:02Even more disheartening was the way Magic himself lost his cool.
41:09Technical foul and now he just bumped the official and he's gone.
41:15I want to be the best example for these young guys.
41:20You know, I'm harping on them and I'm staying on them and then I come up and do something like this.
41:26No place in basketball for that, as Magic clearly told us before the game.
41:32The storybook season Magic had hoped for closed dismally with a first round playoff defeat.
41:38Kirsten takes on Los Angeles three games to one.
41:49We got on the plane after we lost, he was, he was in tears.
41:54I was in tears because I knew it was over.
41:57That was it.
41:58When Magic's comeback didn't work, I think that's when we finally accepted that Showtime was over.
42:08And bring a championship back here in Los Angeles.
42:15I think you know that it's time to go and it's time to go.
42:24It wasn't Magic's fault.
42:26Magic was just like, you know, I don't think I can do this anymore.
42:29You know, it's a new era.
42:38I'm going to speak in arts, I'm about to give a world presentation.
42:56Two and a half minutes, three minutes.
42:57I haven't prepared anything, so I'm about to wing it.
43:00My name is Kobe Bryant, 17 years old.
43:09Here I am today, giving an old presentation.
43:12In English class, not only in front of Mr. Rigby's camera, but camera of Prism and ESPN.
43:21My father played professional basketball for eight years.
43:24He decided that it would be best for him to take his talent elsewhere.
43:31So, he moved to Italy for eight years.
43:37My father told us that he's retiring from the game of basketball and that it was time for us to come back to America.
43:45It was very hard getting adjusted.
43:47So, on Fridays and Saturdays, I would go into my rec room with my basketball and basically dribble myself to sleep.
43:55And I think that that was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.
43:59Because during those lonely hours in the rec room, I discovered the hunger, the motivation,
44:05and the desire to be the best possible basketball player that I could be.
44:08Kobe is the best player by far, but if we can contain him, he can't do much.
44:14The question is, if two of them said, well, you know, we think we can contain him,
44:19I'd like to know what you think.
44:38Kobe Bryant from Philadelphia hasn't even been drafted yet.
44:42It has already lined up an endorsement deal with Adidas.
44:45I've never seen a 17-year-old with that much hype.
44:49I mean, the fact that Kobe got a shoe deal before he even was drafted was very impressive.
44:55He was in Sports Illustrated.
44:57The hype machine was going.
44:59But there was always kind of that, are we building this guy up too much?
45:04Although, Jerry West was highly impressed, which counts for a lot.
45:08He came into the office glowing and said, Mitch, I want to have a workout,
45:15and I want you to be there and watch.
45:16I had never heard of Kobe, but Jerry called me and said,
45:20Cooper, I want you to come over, but bring your gear.
45:22I want you to work him out a little bit.
45:23Michael Cooper had just retired, so he was still in pretty good shape and athletic.
45:27We always taped our workouts, but for some reason, that tape came up missing.
45:35Testing, one, two, three, testing, testing.
45:38Jerry, Kobe Bryant, any comparison to any current player?
45:43Well, I don't think there's any comparison, because there's no historical parts to his game,
45:48at least from a collegiate perspective.
45:50I'm 40 years old, and I hadn't done basketball in a while, and it was probably one of the most intense workouts.
45:58Kobe was just a ball of energy. 17, playing against an All-NBA defensive player.
46:04That takes some courage. It was impressive.
46:07I only get this for the record, Jerry. You just saw a 17-year-old Kobe Bryant work out. What'd you see?
46:14His skill, his skill. He's the best young player I ever think we've worked out here.
46:20I don't often make predictions for greatness, but I think he's going to be great.
46:27The workout didn't last very long, because I didn't want Michael to get any more embarrassed.
46:33Some people say Kobe kicked my ass. I'm going to disagree with that.
46:36But I'll tell you what, the young kid, he got the best of me.
46:40I don't know what happened to the tape. Does it work out? I don't ever want anybody to see that.
46:52Sometimes I say, oh my God. You know how I'd like to see Emily grab your uniform.
46:56Getting Kobe sounded great, but nobody knew that Kobe was going to be who Kobe was at that time.
47:03And we might not be able to draft him anyway.
47:06It is so tightly kept, what you see and what you know on a player. They're very secretive, you know.
47:14They don't need that to get out in any way, because the guy that's one jump ahead of you in the draft could take him.
47:23We had players like Nick Van Exel and Eddie Jones, but now it's about who's our leader going to be on the court.
47:32All right, next guest is a four-time NBA all-star and the starting center for the Orlando Magic, Shaquille O'Neal.
47:53Are you going to be a member of the Orlando Magic next season?
47:57I'll be a free agent come July 1st.
48:00He was the biggest, most dominant player in the league.
48:03Shaquille, bounce pass hard on him, got it back!
48:05Even though there were other really good free agents out there, he was the one that would supply everything that the Lakers needed.
48:12You know, he's 7'1", 300 pounds, strength finesse, a $42 million contract, and a license to print more money.
48:25There was no one able to stop him. I don't care who you are.
48:28It was not one individual that could stop him alone. Not even Vlade.
48:33Even though I love Vlade, but Vlade had no chance.
48:36I realized how strong he is. You're pushing, but he's not moving.
48:48Even if you send a double team on Shaq, I'll never forget running down a double.
48:52He would just move you out of the way. Lay it in.
48:55A huge personality. Big smile. He had Los Angeles written all over.
49:10L.A. is the land of superheroes, and that's the Superman.
49:15If you have a player who wins and is charismatic, you know, in L.A. that really sells.
49:21I think my dad was always looking, you know, how am I going to reinvent Showtime?
49:29Landing Shaq, that was the answer, but first we had to figure out how to afford him.
49:35What kind of money are we talking about here?
49:36Your salary.
49:37No, nobody's worth that kind of money.
49:41You know, Lakers are Lakers. They're going to figure out, you know, and I knew they're going to
49:44find a way. I didn't know that I'm going to be part of it.
49:47Lakers. To win in the NBA almost always takes a big seven-foot center, and we have one, of course,
49:56with Vlade Divac. We had Vlade Divac, who the fans loved, but in order to make the cap space work
50:05in a four-check. You know, he had to go.
50:08Lakers. To get Kobe Bryant, a very bright prospect, and to get Shaquille O'Neal, we have to trade Vlade
50:17before we are sure that we could get the other two. That defines the gamble.
50:23The risk that my dad took was similar to a high-stakes poker game. You know, you put your chips in the pot,
50:32and you hoped that you had the cards to win the whole thing.
50:34Jerry West was a massive gambler.
50:37Stay very humble, be very cautious, and only play when you have the best hand.
50:42Among his peers, other owners, he was a risk-taker.
50:46And unless you're a risk-taker, you can't get it done.
50:50So Jerry West makes a deal to trade Vlade to the Hornets for their 13th pick.
50:56Bob Bass was the GM in Charlotte at the time.
50:59Jerry told Bob Bass, when it comes time to pick, to draft Kobe.
51:05I said, there's no way that this guy is not going to be drafting the top four or five picks in the draft.
51:10That's the problem.
51:11And we had to get past a certain date to pursue Shaquille.
51:16So we couldn't consummate the deal right away.
51:18There were several problems, actually.
51:21The best young players in the world stand at the doorstep to the big time.
51:25It is the 1996 NBA Draft.
51:29That was intense, you know, because we didn't know if Kobe would fall to where we were going to pick at.
51:35With the first pick, the Philadelphia 76ers select Allen Iverson.
51:42With the second pick, Marcus Camby.
51:44The gamble is, here, I'm going to give you $100, you go to Las Vegas.
51:49You go and play one-handed blackjack.
51:51You lose it, you gamble.
51:52Sharif Abdurrahim, Stefan Marbury.
51:56I don't believe in gambles, I believe in risk.
51:58Ray Allen, Antoine Walker, Lorenzen Wright.
52:02People passed him.
52:05It wasn't in vogue to draft high school kids.
52:08It was not.
52:09And I think that was probably a saving grace.
52:12With the eighth pick, the ninth pick, the tenth pick.
52:15Some teams wanted instant gratification.
52:17They thought they'd get more finished product.
52:19With the eleventh pick, with the twelfth pick, the Cleveland Cavaliers select Vitaly McCoppenko.
52:28Up next, the Charlotte Hornets, back at you in a minute.
52:32I was so happy.
52:35And I called Jerry and I said, Jerry, I said, you just got the number one pick in the draft.
52:41With the thirteenth pick, the Charlotte Hornets select Kobe Bryant from Lower Merion High School.
52:48It was a shock.
52:49It was a shock.
52:50What?
52:51What they traded Vlade for?
52:55Last question for Kobe, please.
52:56My agent called me to tell me.
52:58And I felt that somebody took the baseball bat and just hit me, you know, straight in the head.
53:03That was the pain.
53:05I didn't care about the business and the contracts and the old stuff.
53:09I care about, you know, a family.
53:12Literally, I decide, okay, I'm done.
53:15I'm not going to play anymore.
53:19He did not want to leave Los Angeles.
53:21You know, he loved the city.
53:22He loved the team.
53:25If Vlade doesn't go to Charlotte and we don't get the thirteenth pick back, we can't afford
53:32Shaquille and we wouldn't get Kobe.
53:35It was a problem.
53:36Maybe this whole deal is going to go south.
53:38It was pretty intense.
53:40And Jerry, he was a mess.
53:42So my dad tells Vlade, you'll always be family, but this is what's best for the Lakers.
53:48Vlade said, well, if it's going to make the Lakers better, then it's all right.
53:56So I went there and tried and I found something that could work.
54:01And Kobe, this is for you.
54:06Thank you very much.
54:08Kobe hopefully would pan out for us.
54:10But Shaq really was the most important piece.
54:14And now with Vlade traded, we could afford Shaq.
54:18If there is demand for a product, the price of the product goes up.
54:21If a bidding war ensues, the price of the product goes way, way up.
54:24There was a lot of twists and turns along the way.
54:28Money demands changed.
54:29And every time money demand changed, that means you had to do something else
54:32to remove a player from your roster.
54:35Dr. Buss would talk to Jerry and Jerry would talk to Dr. Buss.
54:38He'd ask me questions about where we're going.
54:40And I said, well, we have to trade these players.
54:42And they go, oh my gosh, they're pretty good players.
54:43And I said, yes, but look, you can trade your whole team and this guy's worth it.
54:48Now reagents started signing with other teams, and there was really no other backup plan.
54:57My dad was trying to teach me that in poker, if you rush a hand when it's not ready,
55:03you'll probably fail.
55:05The Tampa Tribune reports the Lakers are now prepared to offer O'Neal
55:09a seven-year deal worth just over $117 million.
55:12And they could go as high as 140 mil.
55:15The Tampa Tribune reports Shaq turned down a seven-year, $119 million deal from the Magic.
55:33But once you get the right cards, then you have to go all in and play the hand.
55:38We finally got to a point where we could do the deal.
55:42I went to Atlanta in the hotel room, the 90th floor or something.
55:47And I was looking out the window, and I said, hmm, if he doesn't get here, that's a long fall.
55:54If we do all this, and he goes to another team or re-signs with his existing team,
56:00then we've really done a lot of damage, and it may take years to get it back.
56:06We're breaking into programming right now to bring you a live news conference at which
56:11Shaquille O'Neal is expected to announce that he has signed a seven-year, $120 million contract
56:18to join the L.A. Lakers.
56:20The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired a 24-year-old superstar who we feel is going to bring us to
56:28that incredible level that this franchise has enjoyed in Los Angeles.
56:31Jerry West always got it done, and that's the one miraculous, remarkable, fantastic thing about him.
56:39I was excited. That whole summer, I was telling my boys, man, we're getting Shaq, we're going to win the championship.
56:46At that moment, I thought for sure I was winning the championship that following year.
56:53That summer, I had to go to a hospital for like four days. I was exhausted.
56:59GM job is just incredibly stressful. So is an ownership. My dad probably was pretty stressed out too,
57:05because he had to figure out how to pay him. Not coincidentally, the Lakers have also announced
57:10today that they're raising their ticket prices. Our ticket department went nuts,
57:16and everything sold out. I think that gives you an indication of how Dr. West felt. There was a
57:22juggernaut now. Not only are we going to win games, but now you've got charismatic personalities
57:30that people won't pay to see. Oh, shit. Got a camera on my face.
58:00We'd go to the bar. Forget it too.
58:02I'll cop far out.
58:02You got a camera on my face.
58:13You're looking forward to seeing like four of the, you know, that people won't pay.
58:15You got some importance. You're должны be getting a capital price.
58:19You've got to beat the pchusslo. Yeah, you got to.
58:21You got an円 down, you got to buy it, and you know, that's a very fair factor.
58:24You got to get Atlantic and you got to edge them up.
58:25That's five feet. Yeah, you know it's credited one nice thing.
58:26Это it was nice, that we were able to head up over there and it was 지nd from there.
