00:00On this 30th of November, the Church celebrates Saint Andrew, apostle of Christ,
00:05But it is also the celebration of several other, less well-known first names.
00:09like Andrea, André or Andriane.
00:13Yet it is André's name that overwhelmingly dominates today.
00:16carried by one of the most emblematic figures of early Christianity.
00:21Brother of Peter, privileged witness of Jesus,
00:25tireless preacher, martyr and protector of many nations,
00:31Saint Andrew remains a universal figure, deeply loved throughout Christendom.
00:37Andrew was born in Bethsaida, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
00:42With his brother Simon, the future Pierre,
00:44He works as a fisherman in a poor region
00:47where the days are harsh and unpredictable.
00:51His life takes a decisive turn
00:53when he first became a disciple of John the Baptist.
00:58It is there that he hears the announcement that will change his life forever.
01:02When John refers to Jesus as the Lamb of God,
01:06André understands that his spiritual quest
01:09has just found its fulfillment.
01:12He follows Jesus, spends a few hours with him
01:16And that moment is enough to change everything.
01:19Andrew then became the first of the disciples.
01:23the one whom tradition calls the first recalled.
01:27His enthusiasm is contagious.
01:30He had barely met Christ,
01:32that he should hurry to find his brother Simon
01:35to tell him that they have found the Messiah.
01:37In this sense, Andrew is the first missionary,
01:42the one who paves the way.
01:45He hasn't traveled any kilometers yet.
01:47nor preached in distant cities,
01:50But he has already grasped the essentials.
01:52The encounter with Jesus is never a given.
01:56to be kept for oneself.
01:58She is calling for testimonies.
02:00It ignites and sends forth.
02:03Andrew brings Peter to Christ
02:06and this simple action transforms history
02:09since she brings it onto the scene
02:12a man who would become the leader of the apostles.
02:16Throughout Christ's public years,
02:19André stands out for his discreet attitude
02:22but deeply attentive.
02:24He is, for example,
02:26who alerts Jesus to the presence of the young boy
02:29carrying five loaves of bread and two fish
02:32just before multiplication.
02:36Where others saw an insoluble problem,
02:39André already perceives a possibility of God's action.
02:43This spiritual sensitivity,
02:46although silent,
02:48shows that his faith is rooted in trust.
02:52He doesn't understand everything yet.
02:54But he senses that anything is possible for Jesus.
02:57After the resurrection and ascension of Christ,
03:02The apostles are sent to the four corners of the world.
03:06According to ancient tradition,
03:09Andrew preaches in Asia Minor,
03:11in Siti,
03:12in Thrace
03:13and all the way to the shores of the Black Sea.
03:17He faces hostile climates,
03:19uncertain roads,
03:21but above all the spiritual and political resistance
03:25of populations that are often indifferent or hostile.
03:30Yet, André remains a messenger of peace.
03:34He proclaims the Gospel with the same simplicity as on the first day.
03:39He speaks of the Christ he saw,
03:42that he heard,
03:43whose living reality he touched.
03:46His strength does not lie in speeches,
03:49but in his loyalty.
03:52His missionary journey eventually led him to Greece.
03:55in Patras,
03:57where he continues to preach despite the anger of local authorities.
04:02His testimony is causing a stir.
04:05And André is sentenced to death.
04:07He refuses to be crucified like Jesus
04:10and humbly requests a different cross.
04:14in the shape of an X,
04:15out of respect for the way he regards his Lord.
04:20This cross would become one of his most famous symbols.
04:25During his ordeal,
04:26Far from collapsing,
04:28He continues to teach,
04:30to bless,
04:31to console those around him.
04:33His martyrdom becomes a final act of evangelization.
04:38He died as he lived.
04:40turned towards Christ,
04:42in astonishing peace.
04:45After his death,
04:46His influence has only grown.
04:50He became the protector of Greece,
04:52from Russia,
04:53of Scotland
04:54and many maritime cities.
04:57His cross is incorporated into the Scottish flag.
05:01then to the flag of the United Kingdom.
05:04His cult has endured through the centuries
05:06with rare stability,
05:08supported as much by the Eastern Church
05:10than by the Western Church.
05:14Saint Andrew embodies man
05:15who left everything to follow Christ
05:18and which has never ceased
05:20to show the way to others.
05:23It remains for the believers
05:24a model of simplicity
05:26availability
05:28and mission.
05:29Prayer to Saint Andrew
05:32Lord Jesus Christ,
05:36you who called Saint Andrew
05:38the first among your disciples,
05:40Give us his ardor,
05:42her joy and her courage.
05:45That, following his example,
05:46we know how to follow you every day
05:48with a willing heart.
05:51Through her intercession,
05:53strengthen our faith,
05:54sanctifies our actions
05:56and guides our steps towards the light.
06:00Saint Andrew,
06:01apostle of Christ,
06:03you who gave your life
06:04out of love for the Gospel,
06:07watch over us
06:08and lead us
06:09until the peace of the Kingdom.
06:12Amen.
