Sainte Élisabeth de Hongrie est l’une des figures les plus lumineuses du calendrier liturgique. Née princesse, devenue servante des pauvres, elle a marqué l’histoire par sa compassion et son amour infini du prochain.  Son célèbre miracle des roses est un symbole puissant de sa charité : ce qui était caché pour aider les pauvres se transforma en fleurs éclatantes sous le regard divin. 00:00Today, November 17th, we celebrate Saint Elizabeth of Hungary,

00:06a universally beloved figure of Christian charity.

00:11It is also the feast day of Elizabeth, Elisa, Bettina and Babette,

00:16names that share with them gentleness and generosity.

00:20Princess, wife, mother, widow, and saint,

00:26Elizabeth embodies compassion at the heart of power.

00:31Elizabeth of Hungary was born in 1207, daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary.

00:37At a very young age, she was betrothed to Louis IV of Thuringia.

00:41a pious and noble prince whom she would marry at 14 years old.

00:46Their union is a rare example of sincere love and marital sanctity in the princely Middle Ages.

00:52Together they live at Warburg Castle,

00:55where Elizabeth is distinguished by her kindness towards the poor, the sick and the orphans.

01:00Despite her royal rank, she deprives herself of luxuries and generously distributes her wealth.

01:07It is said that she went every day to deliver bread and food to the needy.

01:12hiding what she was carrying under her coat.

01:13One day, surprised by her husband, he asked her to open her coat.

01:20In place of the bread, vibrant roses appear.

01:25The miracle of the roses, a symbol of the divine transformation of human charity.

01:29Elizabeth's life changed dramatically when her husband died on crusade in 1227.

01:38At just 20 years old, she found herself widowed with three children.

01:43Rejecting court intrigues, she chose evangelical poverty.

01:47She leaves the castle and settles in a modest house near Marburg.

01:52and dedicated his life to caring for lepers and the dying.

01:57She founded a hospital and worked there with her own hands.

02:01He tends to the wounds, feeds the hungry, and comforts those who weep.

02:05Her health is rapidly declining, exhausted by starvation and deprivation.

02:12She died at only 24 years old in 1231, in a luminous peace.

02:18Miracles multiply at his tomb

02:20and she was canonized as early as 1235, only four years after her death.

02:27Saint Elizabeth then became a timeless model

02:29for all those who want to live out charity in action,

02:33in joy and humility.

02:35His image has endured through the centuries.

02:41A young widow with a gentle and ardent gaze,

02:44servant of the poor.

02:46Patron saint of nurses and widows,

02:49charitable works and the Franciscan Third Order,

02:53She remains a beacon of compassion.

02:56Prayer to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary

02:58Saint Elizabeth,

03:01you who recognized Christ in the poor and the sick,

03:06teach us to serve our brothers with a humble and joyful heart.

03:11You who have found true wealth in poverty,

03:15Help us to detach our hearts from the possessions of this world.

03:17Intercede for the widows,

03:21for single mothers,

03:22for all those who suffer from loneliness or rejection.

03:26May your example light our way

03:28and that we, like you, learn to love to the point of total self-giving.
