00:00Today, November 18th, the Church celebrates the dedication of the basilicas of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Rome.
00:08two of the world's greatest Christian shrines.
00:11It is also the feast day of Peter, Paul, Paula, Pauline, Paolo and Paul, names that carry an immense history of faith.
00:21This day is not only a commemoration of two buildings, but also of two pillars of the Church.
00:26two apostles who gave their lives for Christ, Saint Peter, the fisherman who became the rock of the Church,
00:35and Saint Paul, the former persecutor who became an apostle to the nations.
00:40Saint Peter, whose real name was Simon, was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee.
00:47Called by Jesus himself, he becomes Peter, that is to say the rock, the one on which Christ will build his Church.
00:54He was the first to confess "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
01:01After the death and resurrection of Jesus, Peter led the first Christian community.
01:08He was the one who preached in Jerusalem, then in Antioch, and finally in Rome.
01:13where he dies crucified upside down, out of humility, not judging himself worthy to die like his Lord.
01:20Saint Paul, for his part, was originally called Saul of Tarsus.
01:27A zealous Pharisee, he persecuted Christians.
01:31until a heavenly light overthrew him on the road to Damascus.
01:36Then he hears the voice of Christ.
01:38"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"
01:43Blinded by this divine encounter, he regained his sight after baptism
01:48and becomes the great missionary of the pagan world.
01:52Paul tirelessly traveled throughout the Roman Empire,
01:55founds communities,
01:57He wrote inspired letters that would become a large part of the New Testament.
02:03Arrested in Rome, he died by beheading because he was a Roman citizen.
02:08a quicker death but just as glorious as Peter's.
02:11These two men, so different in their origins and temperaments,
02:18they unite in a shared loyalty,
02:21the absolute love of Christ even unto martyrdom.
02:25One of them, Peter, represents the stability of faith,
02:29The other, Paul, was driven by missionary zeal.
02:33That is why the Church celebrates them together.
02:35like the two indestructible pillars of Christianity.
02:38The two Roman basilicas dedicated to them,
02:43Saint Peter in the Vatican and Saint Paul outside the walls,
02:47remind us of their eternal presence in the holy city.
02:51Saint Peter stands over the tomb of the apostle Peter,
02:55under Michelangelo's great dome,
02:57where pilgrims from all over the world come to pray.
03:00Saint Paul Outside the Walls, more sober and more meditative,
03:05guard Paul's tomb and his chains
03:08symbol of his captivity and his fidelity to the Gospel.
03:12On November 18th, we are not celebrating walls,
03:16but the spiritual foundations of our faith.
03:20Peter and Paul remind us that the Church rests at the same time
03:22on the strength of the testimony and on the spirit of the mission.
03:26Their courage and unity, despite their differences,
03:31They are a model for all believers.
03:34Love God to the point of giving everything.
03:37Prayer
03:37Lord Jesus Christ,
03:41you who chose Saint Peter to build your Church
03:44on the strength of his faith
03:45and Saint Paul to announce it to the nations,
03:50grant us through their intercession
03:51fidelity in faith and fervor in charity.
03:56That we know as they do
03:58to bear witness to your love in the midst of the world
04:01and build bridges rather than walls.
04:05Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Church column,
04:08Please pray for us.
04:09Amen.
