00:00Today, November 15th, we celebrate Saint Albert the Great, bishop, theologian and doctor of the church.
00:09It is also the feast day of Arthur and Leopold, not forgetting the victories, which are particularly honored in certain regions.
00:17Born around 1200 in Lohingen, in Suab, present-day Germany, Albert was a universal mind such as few others in the history of humanity.
00:27Having entered the Dominican order as an adult, he studied and taught in several European cities, including Padua, Cologne, and Paris.
00:37He was the teacher of another giant of theology, Saint Thomas Aquinas.
00:42Together, they helped to create a dialogue between faith and reason, to unite human intelligence and the light of God.
00:51Albert was passionate about the truth, whatever its source.
00:55He was already called the universal doctor during his lifetime, because he was interested in everything: theology, philosophy, botany, chemistry, astronomy, geology, physics.
01:09He was one of the first Christians to recognize the value of scientific knowledge from the ancient and Arab world, particularly that of Aristotle.
01:16He deeply believed that human reason, when it sincerely seeks the truth, always leads to God.
01:24In 1260, Pope Alexander IV appointed him Bishop of Regensburg.
01:32Albert accepted out of obedience, but renounced after two years to resume his life as a teaching monk.
01:37He travelled across Europe on foot, preaching and teaching, always dressed simply, refusing honors and privileges.
01:48He died in Cologne in 1280, after a whole life devoted to uniting faith, science and wisdom.
01:55Canonized in 1931 by Pope Pius XI, Saint Albert the Great was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church the same year.
02:03and in 1941 patron saint of scientists, philosophers and students of natural sciences.
02:12His legacy remains immense.
02:15He embodies the conviction that human intelligence, far from being an enemy of faith, is a precious ally.
02:21In a world where science and religion often seem to be at odds,
02:27Albert reminds us that the truth is a
02:29and that God is both the origin and the end of all knowledge.
02:35Prayer to Saint Albert the Great
02:37Lord our God,
02:41You who gave Saint Albert the Great a spirit of wisdom and a heart full of faith,
02:46Grant that, following his example, we may put our intelligence at the service of truth and goodness.
02:51Through his intercession, he enlightens researchers, teachers, and students.
02:57so that their work may serve the dignity of man and the glory of your name.
03:03Grant us, Lord, never to separate science from charity, nor reason from faith.
