00:22And that is how you back up what you did in qualifying in Super Bowl.
00:26This is a tone-setting race for Enzo Lopes and a big opening lap for Max Anstey.
00:32Lopes out front of the number 16, riding for Rick Ware on the Yamaha.
00:36Chasing him is Max Anstey on that Team GSM machine.
00:41Different rhythms right there. Max gets that big triple. Enzo singled in.
00:45They come out the same, and here's the big test, and it will be all night long.
00:48All through the woods. Here we go. Lopes gets through there great.
00:51Anstey gets through there even better, and Cody Shock and Shane McElrath do as well.
00:56McElrath squares up the next berm as they come over the finish line. Jump.
01:00McElrath inside. Here comes Anstey pushing on Lopes already.
01:04Inside. New leader. Yes, new leader here on the Gold Coast.
01:08And he didn't even wait. He didn't let for the race to settle down, let Enzo Lopes build a little confidence.
01:13He says, no, I need it right now. I'm going to take it.
01:16That was aggressive. Great move by the points leader.
01:18Every race that we've had this year at an SX2 category event, Max Anstey has won every single one of them.
01:27Eight laps, 12 laps, main events, premium races. Doesn't matter. He's won everything.
01:33Maximum points all the way across the board for Max Anstey in 2025.
01:38And this is a big moment for Enzo Lopes, too. You've been great in the woods all night long.
01:42Can you pull it right now? Anstey a little quicker in, a little quicker out.
01:46And now you've got Lopes looking up behind him on his teammate, Cody Shock.
01:48That's not a good sign. And if you're Max Anstey, that little gap that you've got allows you to take the lines that you want.
01:55Look at McElrath.
01:55Here comes McElrath trying to make a move, but guess what?
01:58Cody Shock takes advantage of it on the 69, and he will be back in front of McElrath.
02:05And these are your top four in points, so seeing them up front is not surprising.
02:10But the order's a little bit different than we've seen this year.
02:12Shane McElrath has had a tough go with your defending champ.
02:15He had body issues at round one, bike issues at round two, but he looks better tonight.
02:19Keep an eye on the 43 back behind them, the red bike.
02:23That's Cullen Park, who just missed out on Super Bowl by, what, a hundredth of a second, something like that.
02:29And here he is in fifth and closing.
02:31And the guy that he's been battling with all season long, Cole Thompson, is two spots back behind him.
02:38Maxime Desprez between the two.
02:40Here's McElrath looking inside.
02:41His shock takes the spot away, and McElrath moves up into the top three.
02:46And I think we're seeing the passing spots on this track.
02:49It's after the whoops, after the finish, and in the first corner.
02:52Those are the 180s.
02:53Oh, look at Shock coming back up the inside.
02:55Cody Shock up the inside.
02:58McElrath trying to find a way to defend it.
03:01He gets a pretty good drive off the corner.
03:03Hugs to the inside.
03:05Great side-by-side battle, but Shock is a little quicker off the corner and into the wall jump.
03:09That was great defense by Cody Shock.
03:12Jay McElrath wanted to get him back on that right-handed 180.
03:15Shock gave him nowhere to go.
03:16But now, look, Cullen Park's joined the party.
03:19Yeah, as we said, all that fighting between McElrath and Shock has allowed Park to close right in.
03:24McElrath right along the top blocks as he blitzes through the whoops.
03:36He was very quick through there.
03:38Yeah, and last lap he was closer, so he had the chance to make the pass.
03:41This lap he was a little further behind, but you saw Enzo Lopes having a little issue there, too,
03:46where Anstey is really starting to check on these guys in that section in route.
03:49We talk about the starts and the speed, but Anstey's been great in the whoops, too.
03:52We're seeing it now early in Sprint Race 1.
03:59Shane McElrath, the reigning SX2 champion.
04:04Oh, McElrath way loose, and Park gets by.
04:08Park clips the top blocks, and that'll give McElrath a chance to come back,
04:12but he can't get it done through that rhythm lane.
04:14And Cullen Park moves himself up to fourth,
04:17and the reigning champ slips back another spot in frustration.
04:21And that's how quick things can change.
04:23Remember, two laps ago, he's playing offense.
04:25He's looking for a way around shock.
04:27One mistake turns to two, and the next thing you know, you're on defense,
04:30and then the big mistake lets Cullen Park by.
04:32And now for Cullen, you've got a free run at Cody Shock.
04:35What can you do with a little open track?
04:37Well, and it also continues the problems for Shane McElrath,
04:40who had physical issues at the opener, Argentina, mechanical issues in Vancouver.
04:47And today, I don't know, what would you call it, Daniel, just riding issues?
04:50Yeah, little mistake.
04:51I mean, one turns to two, and that happens as a racer.
04:54When you make a bobble, it's hard to recover and get back on pace.
04:57And then when you make the second one, you start second-guessing.
05:00That leads to a third mistake, and it's really hard to recover.
05:03The rider who's making no mistakes is Max Anstey.
05:07This is why that pass on lap one was so important.
05:09He's been able to ride somewhat free since then.
05:12And if he would have settled into Lopes' pace, this could be a completely different race,
05:16but he did what he needed to do early.
05:18Max Anstey was crowned champion of the SX2 category in 2023.
05:23He is well on his way to his 16th race win in SX2 competition in his career.
05:30McElrath sitting here in fifth.
05:35This one winding down quickly, scheduled for eight laps, ten points up for grabs.
05:40And even though Max had issues in qualifying and Super Bowl,
05:44he's looking to be perfect still in race competition.
05:47And I've got to point out, the track looks good compared to what we saw in qualifying.
05:51They got some moisture in, they worked it in, but it's still slick.
05:55And it might even be a tougher type of slick because that little bit of water they put on,
05:59it might take a race before it really works itself in.
06:01So you see these mistakes?
06:03These are coming from maybe a little bit of a false impression on what that dirt looks like
06:07or what it really feels like.
06:08Here's one of the spots Anstey's so good as he rips across the top of the woods.
06:13Yeah, it's the entry speed.
06:14I mean, when you come in that committed, that trusting, that fast,
06:18you just carry your way out.
06:19I saw Lopes make a little mistake here and there, and that's all from the entry speed.
06:23And Max, that confidence, we've seen it from A to Z.
06:25Everything he's doing this year is just on another level.
06:28And the best battle on the racetrack is coming up right here.
06:31It's a fight for third between the 69th of the Rick Ware Racing Arby's Back Machines of Cody Shock.
06:38And closing in on him fast is the Moto Concepts Racing entry, the number 43 of Cullen Park,
06:43as we are on the final lap here in the opening race of the day at the Australian GP.
06:49We've been talking all week.
06:50Cullen Park's riding has not matched the results, but it's been from issues outside of his control.
06:56A big second place finish in the first race of the year, and then issue after issue after issue.
07:01So this is a big bounce back and a rebound for Cullen Park.
07:04Here's Max charging at you once again.
