Box office analysts say it's unclear how much of an impact worries over the coronavirus had on moviegoing over the weekend.

00:00We only have 24 hours to bring the rest of him back.
00:04Until then, ta-da!
00:07Pixar's Onward bounded to a muted $40 million in North America,
00:11making it one of the lowest nationwide starts for the studio.
00:14While the Pixar film received strong reviews and an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes,
00:19it had only been tracking for a domestic launch in the $40-45 million range to begin with.
00:23Now it's unclear as of now just how much of those figures and movie going over the weekend
00:27were impacted by the growing concerns over coronavirus.
00:31The impact of COVID-19 is clearly being felt overseas.
00:34Onward came in well behind projections overseas with an underwhelming $28 million
00:39from its first 47 territories for a global bow of $68 million.
00:44This could have been a direct impact of many theaters across China being closed due to the
00:48coronavirus concerns and box office revenue being compromised in other markets including
00:52South Korea, Italy and Japan.
00:54The movie did not open in any of the countries most impacted by the virus.
00:58But it's also unclear whether Onward faced its own challenges.
01:02Comparisons to last year when Captain Marvel opened to $153 million were always going to be brutal.
01:07Overall, revenue for the weekend was down more than 50% from the same frame in 2019.
01:13The film, which earned an A- cinema score of voice stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as two
01:17teenage elf brothers who embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out in the world
01:21and if they can use it to bring back their late father.
01:24Some of Pixar's other lowest nationwide openings have included 1995's Toy Story,
01:29its first release with $29.1 million, 2015's The Good Dinosaur which earned $39.2 million,
01:36and 1998's A Bug's Life which dropped over the Thanksgiving holiday of that year with a
01:40three day gross of $33.3 million and roughly $40 million for the long holiday frame.
