00:25losing the three-day weekend to a holdover local crime thriller.

00:29MCU releases have been underperforming in China since the pandemic.

00:33By comparison, back in 2019, Brie Larson's franchise starter Captain Marvel opened to $89.3 million,

00:40on its way to a strong $154 million China total.

00:44According to current projections, the Marvels will be lucky to top $20 million.

00:48Marvel's other 2023 releases have also failed to find much traction with mainland Chinese moviegoers.

00:54Even James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which was a success in North America with a $359 million haul,

01:02earned just $27.8 million in China.

01:05Other action genres have held up somewhat better in the country, such as Universal's Fast X,

01:10which holds the crown for Hollywood's biggest film of 2023 in the country,

01:14with a $51.1 million opening and a $140 million total.

01:19The next U.S. film to hit Chinese screens will be Lionsgate's prequel,

01:23The Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,

01:25which opens day and date with North America on Friday.
