00:00Big studio sequels and spin-offs have not been doing so hot in the summer box office,
00:04and now the disappointing trend is continuing with Sony's Men in Black International
00:08debuting to a sluggish $28.5 million at 4,200 locations.
00:13The movie, which stars Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth as Agent H and Agent M
00:18respectively, has a mere 27 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It did, however,
00:23get a better score with audiences who gave it a B cinema score. The weekend crowd
00:27brought in mostly young viewers with 74 percent of the audience under 35. The revamped
00:32Men in Black franchise finds Agent H and Agent M spearheading the London bureau of the
00:36agency that's charged with protecting and concealing the earth from an alien species.
00:41The movie collected $73.7 million overseas, making International's global haul an estimated
00:47$102.2 million. China led the markets with $26.3 million, followed by South Korea with
00:53$4.9 million, Japan with $3.5 million and Mexico with $3.9 million.
00:58Another new weekend offering also underwhelmed at the box office, New Line and Warner
01:03Brothers' Shaft, which came in seventh at the domestic box office with a disappointing $8.3
01:07million. The R-rated sequel of the 2000 film, which was a remake of Gordon Park's original
01:121971 movie, follows three generations of Shaft men. Richard Roundtree, Samuel L. Jackson and
01:18series newcomer Jesse T. Usher. The latest installment earned a 36 percent Rotten Tomatoes
01:23rating from critics, but audiences seemed to disagree, giving it an impressive A cinema
01:28score. Elsewhere, Amazon Studios' late night expanded wide, earning an estimated $5.1 million
01:33in its second weekend. The pic, which follows the talk show host Emma Thompson, who tries to
01:38become more current with the help of her latest hire, Mindy Kaling, was picked up at
01:41Sundance by Amazon for $13 million. The film was favorable with critics, who gave it an 80 percent
01:47rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences were less thrilled, giving it a B cinema score.
01:52Meanwhile, Disney's live-action Aladdin movie is still going strong, coming in third with a
01:56weekend haul of $16.7 million. The movie now sits at a massive $263.4 million after its
02:03fourth weekend at the North American box office, with an international gross of $461.4 million.
