00:00In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, peace be with you.

00:20We acknowledge our sins, we acknowledge the compassion, the mercy and the love of God.

00:26You walk with us in our struggles, Lord have mercy.

00:31You give us your strength in our weakness, Christ have mercy.

00:36And because of you we know that when we are weak we are also strong, Lord have mercy.

00:42May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and lead us into healing and life everlasting.

00:49Stir up the will of your faithful, we pray, O Lord, that striving more eagerly to bring your divine work to fruitful completion,

01:00they may receive in greater measure the healing remedies your kindness bestows.

01:06Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

01:19A reading from the Prophet Daniel

01:22I, Daniel, have been seeing visions in the night.

01:28I saw that the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea.

01:36Four great beasts emerged from the sea, each different from the other.

01:41The first was like a lion with eagle's wings, and as I looked, its wings were torn off,

01:50and it was lifted from the ground and sat standing on its feet like a man,

01:57and it was given a human heart.

02:00The second beast I saw was different, like a bear,

02:03raised up on one of its sides, with three ribs in its mouth, beneath its teeth.

02:12Up, came the command, eat quantities of flesh.

02:17After this I looked and saw another beast like a leopard,

02:21and with four birds' wings on its flanks.

02:25It had four heads, and power was given to it.

02:29Next I saw another vision, in the visions of the night,

02:34and I saw a fourth beast, fearful, terrifying, very strong.

02:40It had great iron teeth, and it ate, crushed, and trampled underfoot what remained.

02:48It was different from the previous beasts, and had ten horns.

02:52While I was looking at these horns, I saw another horn sprouting among them, a little one.

03:00Three of the original horns were pulled out by the roots to make way for it,

03:05and in this horn I saw eyes like human eyes, and a mouth that was full of boasts.

03:13As I watched, throngs were set up in place.

03:16The one of great age took his seat.

03:20His robe was white as snow.

03:22The hair on his head was pure as wool.

03:27Its throne was a blaze of flames.

03:30Its wheels were a burning fire.

03:33A stream of fire poured out, issuing from his presence.

03:38A thousand thousand waited on him.

03:41Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

03:44A court was held, and the books were opened.

03:49The great things the horn was saying were still ringing in my ears.

03:54And as I watched, the beast was killed, and his body destroyed, and committed to the flames.

04:02The other beasts were depraved of their power, and received a lease of life for a season and a time.

04:10I gazed into the visions of the night, and I saw coming on the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man.

04:18He came to the one of great age, and was led into his presence.

04:22On him was conferred sovereignty, glory, and kingship, and men of all peoples, nations, and languages became his servants.

04:34His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty, which shall never pass away, nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

06:04Jesus taught his disciples a parable

06:08Think of the fig tree

06:10And indeed every tree

06:12As soon as you see them bud

06:15You know that summer is now near

06:22Know that the kingdom of God is near

06:27Before this generation has passed away

06:46The first reading, of course, is full of apocalyptic language

06:53And some of it is based on historical events

06:56The various empires and so on

06:59That went around the time of the writing

07:02And reflecting on the events that were happening

07:06Things like Antiochus Epiphanes

07:09That boastful little horn

07:11That caused so much trouble

07:14In the time of the Maccabees in Israel, etc

07:16So a lot of it is based on

07:18The enemies of the people of God

07:20Coming up and rising

07:22In the end, of course, we know that

07:25Jesus faces all the evil and all the sin

07:29And he is the one who comes ultimately

07:32To the one of great age

07:33The Father

07:34He is the one who is the linchpin, so to speak

07:37Between everything

07:38He is the one who gives us hope

07:40So whatever happens

07:43He is there

07:44And that's what we are reminded of

07:46Whatever suffering

07:47Whatever pain

07:48Whatever challenges

07:49And ultimately the good and the greatness of God

07:52Will prevail

07:53Over evil

07:54Over the devil

07:55Over sin
