00:00Lena Waithe's comedy 20s has been ordered to series at Viacom's BET, expanding on her
00:04relationship with the network for whom she executive produces the recently renewed
00:08reboot of Boomerang. 20s, which was originally developed at WarnerMedia-owned TBS as a
00:13pilot, was created and written by Waithe when she was in her early 20s. The eight-episode
00:17half-hour series follows the adventures of a queer black girl, Hattie, and her two
00:21straight best friends, Marie and Nia. The comedy, based on Waithe's YouTube series of
00:25the same name, explores friendship, finding love and messing everything up along the way.
00:29Said Connie Orlando, head of programming at BET,
00:32BET Networks is thrilled to partner once again with the creative visionary Lena Waithe
00:36on both Boomerang and 20s as she is without a doubt a leading relevant voice of our
00:41generation and a disruptor in her own right. BET is committed to the elevation and
00:45inclusive and authentic storytelling that viewers continue to expect from the brand.
00:49The deal for 20s follows in the wake of Waithe becoming an in-demand voice thanks to
00:53her Emmy win for writing the Thanksgiving episode of Netflix's Master of None, an
00:57installment that followed her characters coming out over multiple years. The win made
01:01Waithe the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing.
01:04Additionally, Waithe's Showtime drama The Shy, which she created, recently launched its
01:08second season on the premium cable network. According to Waithe,
01:1220s has been a project I've been dreaming about for as long as I can remember. I think a lot
01:16of people were interested but didn't see the vision. I couldn't be more excited to
01:20deepen my relationship with BET. I know audiences have been waiting a long time for this one.
