00:00Dave Chappelle's stand-up special The Closer has landed two Emmy nominations
00:04despite backlash over the comedian's jokes targeting the trans community.
00:09The special received nods for best pre-recorded Variety Special and Variety Special Directing.
00:15In the Variety Special category, The Closer is joined by Adele's One Night Only,
00:19HBO Max's Harry Potter reunion, Norm Macdonald's posthumous Netflix special Nothing Special,
00:25and Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga's One Last Time.
00:28Shortly after The Closer debuted on Netflix last October, many, including trans staff members
00:33and allies at Netflix, spoke out against the comedian who mocked gender identities
00:38and defended J.K. Rowling's transphobic remarks during the special.
00:42At the time, co-CEO Ted Sarandos sent out a few internal memos in which he defended the special,
00:48which led to an in-person and virtual walkout to protest the streamer's handling of the matter.
00:53Sarandos later apologized for his memos.
00:55However, the firestorm around The Closer has led to an ongoing debate
00:59around the role streamers like Netflix have in hosting content,
01:02as well as how much or little power employees can have in speaking out against such content.
