00:23burning in your chest after meals a sour taste in your mouth and chest discomfort
00:29when lying down these can be signs of acid reflux it's one of the most common
00:36digestive issues and one of the most common complaints we receive as
00:40doctors tonight on house call we're gonna talk about what causes acid reflux the
00:46symptoms and what you can do to manage it safely to put it simply acid reflux is
00:53when stomach acid flows back from your stomach to your esophagus that tube that
00:58connects your mouth to your stomach this results in irritation and inflammation
01:04the most common symptoms include burning in the chest also known as heart pain
01:09burping or bloating nausea discomfort when lying flat constantly clearing throat and
01:18hoarseness on a morning triggers of acid reflux include large meals especially at
01:25night fried or fatty foods spicy foods caffeine chocolate carbonated beverages
01:34alcohol stress and smoking over time if acid reflux is left untreated it can lead to
01:43the following complications chronic inflammation of the esophagus narrowing of
01:49the oesophagus the difficulty swallowing a condition known as barrett's oesophagus and
01:57increased risk of oesophageal cancer of course there are simple lifestyle changes
02:04that you can implement to improve your symptoms eat smaller meals avoid lying down
02:11after meals for two to three hours elevate the head of your bed and try to maintain a
02:18healthy weight through healthy eating and exercise and of course there's medication
02:25that we can use or suggest to help you manage your symptoms including histamine 2
02:32receptor blockers antacids and something known as a proton pump inhibitor to reduce the
02:40amount of acid in the stomach acid reflux may seem harmless but over time it can
02:47damage your oesophagus if you're experiencing persistent heartburn difficulty swallowing or
02:54symptoms that just don't improve talk to your doctor about the next steps with lifestyle
