00:15Stress, we all feel it.
00:18But did you know that stress can silently damage your body without you even realizing it?
00:24Tonight on House Call, we're examining the hidden way stress can affect your body
00:29and what you can do to take control before it's too late.
00:33When you feel stress, your body activates the flight-or-fight response,
00:38releasing two key hormones, adrenaline and cortisol.
00:42Adrenaline gives you that burst of energy and alertness,
00:46while cortisol allows you to handle longer-term stress.
00:51But when these two hormones remain elevated for a long time, that's when the problem starts.
00:56Here's what chronic stress can do to your body.
00:59Let's start with your heart.
01:01Elevated stress hormones can increase your blood pressure and heart rate,
01:06thereby raising your risk for heart disease.
01:09Now your brain.
01:10Chronic stress can affect your focus, memory and mood.
01:15It can even contribute to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
01:20Now your immune system.
01:22Chronically elevated levels of cortisol can weaken your immune system and put you at increased risk for infection.
01:31Let's not forget about your digestive system.
01:34Stress can worsen symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain and it can worsen functional gut issues like irritable bowel syndrome.
01:42Lastly, sleep.
01:45Stress disrupts sleep, which can affect virtually every other health condition.
01:50If you're experiencing the following signs, then your stress may be becoming dangerous.
01:56Persistent fatigue, frequent headaches, weight changes, difficulty concentrating and mood changes.
02:04Here's what you can do to better manage your stress.
02:08Practice daily relaxation, breathing exercises, short walks and meditation.
02:15Prioritize sleep at least 7 to 9 hours every night.
02:19Stay active.
02:21Exercise lower stress hormones and helps boost mood.
02:25Talk about it.
02:26Reach out to friends, family or healthcare professional.
02:30And manage your schedule.
02:33Don't overcommit and learn to say no.
02:37Stress may be silent, but its effects are very real.
02:42Understanding how stress impacts your health is the first step in protecting your brain, heart and overall health.
02:51Start now.
02:52Your body will thank you later.
