00:00A new generation of knitters are taking the world by storm.
00:04And ten of the nation's most talented have joined me here in Scotland to battle it out
00:09for the ultimate crown.
00:11Each week they will face two mind-blowing challenges right here in our magical yarn
00:16barn.
00:21Previously, the knitters tackled their first solo challenge to reinvent a Fair Isle tank top.
00:31I've never done Fair Isle before.
00:32I'm in big trouble.
00:33Dear God.
00:34And then turned their needles to our team challenge to knit a sofa.
00:38I don't want to say that I've bit enough more than I can chew.
00:41Ailsa's knits shone through.
00:43It is just so beautiful.
00:46Dipti came close to being cast off.
00:49Oh!
00:51But it was Gordon who was the first knitter to depart the yarn barn.
00:56Now, it's week two and our nine remaining knitters have a lot to live up to because it's icons
01:03week.
01:04Welcome to Game of War, Britain's best knitter.
01:16Hello knitters and welcome back.
01:18Now, this week is icons week.
01:20And for your solo knit, Di and Sheila would love for you to make an iconic doggy outfit.
01:29We would like you to use both knit and crochet to make a two-piece outfit.
01:33It has to be practical because if it doesn't fit the dog, then it's no use.
01:43We would like it to be something that's iconic to you and it can be a person, a place, and
01:48we want you to use that as your theme to make this incredible doggy apparel.
01:55You have 12 hours to complete this challenge.
01:58Your time starts now.
02:00Let's get knitting.
02:01And crocheting.
02:02Our knitters may be used to making beautiful garments, but working with animals demands a unique approach.
02:13I have never made a garment for an animal.
02:17With measurements taken from two Italian greyhounds, Dana and Dobby, the knitters must balance aesthetics and
02:24practicality to design for a tricky body shape.
02:27I haven't got a real-life dog in my life, so I've kind of made myself a little friend to help.
02:31I'm used to making things to measure, so when I need to make something for a dog, I need to have something to work from.
02:37The knitters must create a custom design based on something iconic to them.
02:42It's inspired by David Bowen.
02:44Freddie Mercury.
02:45What could be more iconic than a unicorn?
02:47Each knitter will create an individual design, but there are key elements they must include.
02:55All designs must incorporate both knitting and crochet.
03:00Knitting uses two needles to build rows of stitches, while crochet uses a hook to create one stitch.
03:07First, knitters must create the body of the garment, choosing stitches that ensure both comfort and functionality,
03:17and a good fit around the legs, neck and rump.
03:20Knitters can then add embellishments to bring each iconic look to life.
03:24Lastly, knitters must create headgear that combines comfort, security and style in a piece that stays put.
03:33Normally, a design like this might take around 30 hours, but in the yarn barn, they have just 12.
03:42Doggy outfits.
03:43What makes it such a difficult thing to make?
03:45Small pieces can be more complex to knit.
03:49They really have to get shaping right.
03:51Especially a headpiece, because one stitch can be the difference between it fitting or falling off.
03:56Tricky business.
03:57It is.
03:58It is.
03:59Yeah.
04:00For music-loving Meadow, there was only one icon she was ever going to choose.
04:05Freddie Mercury.
04:06I'm recreating his iconic yellow jacket that he wore on the A Kind of Magic Tour.
04:12Meadow will be knitting a yellow jacket, embellished underneath with buckles and sixpence button fastenings,
04:19to bring her favourite frontman to life.
04:22And for the headgear, she has chosen to crochet a tiny bejeweled crown.
04:28Hello, Meadow.
04:29Hello.
04:30Obviously, you're, you know, doing something that is important to you.
04:33Queen's been my favourite band for years now.
04:36Me and my dad, we went to see them perform in Belfast.
04:39What do you think your family are going to think of you being here?
04:41Um, I think they're all still a wee bit surprised.
04:45It's quite a big thing for me.
04:48I'm still in my A-levels.
04:50Wow.
04:51Still.
04:52Could you have ever imagined that you'd actually be here doing something like this on a TV show?
04:55Never.
04:56A competition?
04:57No.
04:58Knitting is very, very important to me.
05:01I want to be a fashion designer, and without it, I just, I don't know what else I would do.
05:05I've pushed myself so far to get to this point, and I really want a win to just prove to myself
05:10that I can do it, and I have what it takes.
05:17After last week's ill-fitting tank top, library worker Dipti is hoping to bring a little bit of magic
05:22to her iconic doggy outfit.
05:25It's going to be sparkly. It's going to be, um, unicorny.
05:30Dipti will be crocheting a unicorn horn for her headgear, complete with an extraordinary
05:35extravagant mane.
05:36She's chosen a mix of sparkly yarn to make her dog coat, which she'll be knitting together
05:41in all the colours of the Raylo.
05:44Anyone who's crocheted with this kind of fancy yarn will know that it's impossible to see
05:48the stitches in it, so it is far easier to knit with it than it is to crochet.
05:54I am a massive fan of crochet. I'm not that great at knitting.
06:01Does this look okay, or does this look terrible?
06:03Charity Partnerships director Lydia is also kicking off the challenge with her knitting needles.
06:08Lydia.
06:09Tom, hello.
06:10Which icon are we going for?
06:12Loosely inspired by the Notting Hill Carnival.
06:17Drawing inspiration from the iconic Notting Hill Carnival, Lydia's sparkly doggy outfit
06:22will include a striking crown of knitted feathers and a coat using a feather and fan lace stitch.
06:28People at home who don't necessarily know what lace knitting is, can you give us a little rundown?
06:34It's using the holes to create shape and patterns, so it should have a wavy look.
06:40I love that.
06:41Do you have a dog?
06:42No.
06:43No.
06:44Would never have a dog.
06:46People of Britain.
06:48Don't hate me, but no, I'm not a dog person.
06:51Last week, student Isaac didn't manage to finish either challenge, so this week, he's determined
07:01to stay on track.
07:03You're all right.
07:04You're doing great.
07:05It just needs to get on the dog.
07:10My design is based on the mascot of Philadelphia's ice hockey team.
07:17I went to university out there and it is just like a huge, huge part of my life.
07:20Isaac plans to knit his doggy coat into an ice hockey jersey with a name and even an ice rink
07:27embroidered onto the back.
07:28His headgear helmet will be crocheted using the loop stitch to bring the iconic Philadelphia
07:33Flyers ice hockey mascot, Gritty, to life.
07:37So I'm currently knitting the body.
07:39This is the front part and then obviously I've got my arm holes here.
07:42I am slightly concerned that it's maybe an obscure icon.
07:45I'm not sure if Di and Sheila are up to date on their American hockey.
07:49Notice this little doggy here?
07:53Yeah, right?
07:54It's wolfy.
07:56It's much smaller than Olga's.
07:57It is, but it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog, right?
08:01Simon is just housewife's catnip, isn't he?
08:04He he.
08:05He he.
08:08A few hours into the challenge, knitters should be starting to consider how to shape their dog coats to the body.
08:14So far, so crafts.
08:16Simon, what are you up to?
08:18My inspiration comes from buildings, big Gothic, cathedrals.
08:22Yes.
08:23Going for lots of texture, moss stitch, just to try and really bring over that kind of stonework.
08:30Simon's outfit is inspired by iconic Gothic architecture, such as Canterbury Cathedral.
08:35For the headpiece, he will be crocheting a tiny bell hat.
08:39And for the body, he will be using moss stitch to create a stonework effect, including a Gothic arch.
08:46To embellish his coat, he will be crocheting a stained glass window in the shape of a paw print.
08:52Now that's what I call architecture.
08:54That's really interesting because moss is one of the most difficult stitches.
09:01To do well.
09:02To do well.
09:03Right.
09:04To get a good tension.
09:05I think you've got a very good tension on that.
09:07It really does look like stonework.
09:10In this piece here, I'm going to inset some crochet stained glass.
09:14Ah, stained glass.
09:15I'm not a crocheter, but the stained glass is more of a free-handed thing.
09:19So I'm going to make it up on the fly.
09:24You're taking a wee bit of a risk there.
09:26Yeah, a little bit of a risk.
09:27I'm trying to leave myself plenty of time.
09:35Stephanie, what's your plan for your doggy outfit?
09:38It's going to be a Chelsea Pensioner.
09:39A Chelsea Pensioner?
09:40Yes!
09:42Stephanie has been inspired by the iconic retired British Army veterans, the Chelsea Pensioners.
09:49She'll be recreating their classic red and black uniform, doggy style.
09:54She plans to use fancy stitch to create a firm fabric for the coat, and to top it all off, a crochet black tri-corn hat.
10:03Chelsea Pensioners are pretty well-renowned for having the uniform that fits like a glove.
10:09I'm knitting with two strands because it's really thick.
10:12Thick.
10:13So with two strands, will it feel slightly stiffer when it's on?
10:15Yes.
10:16It's going to give it that tension.
10:17It is.
10:18To make it feel like a coat rather than a floppy jumper.
10:20That's right.
10:21Yes, and that's what I wanted.
10:22Great.
10:24Also creating a thicker doggy coat, but using crochet instead of knit, it's psychotherapist Tracy.
10:30It's Ziggy Stardust.
10:32Oh.
10:33David Bowie.
10:34When I thought of icons, he was the first one I thought of.
10:38Inspired by the legend that is David Bowie, Tracy's dog coat will spell out her favourite star man's name in mosaic crochet.
10:46Mosaic crochet creates a thicker fabric because it layers stitches on top of each other.
10:51But the real showstopper will be her recreation of the iconic spiky hairstyle.
10:56Oh, you pretty thing.
11:00Oh, wow.
11:01The main panel will be a rectangle and then you're going to add all the…
11:04Yeah.
11:05And I'm going to shape with knitting and with crochet, yeah.
11:08Just crochet.
11:10Okay.
11:14To ensure a successful fit, knitters can use shaping to contour the body or even sleeves
11:20for a snug fit to the legs.
11:22And Holger has got some grand plans for how to combine beauty and practicality within his design.
11:30Holger, what is your doggy outfit?
11:33It's to do with performance art based on the Italian commedia dell'arte.
11:42Okay.
11:43It's very high flying, highfalutin for a dog outfit.
11:46Oh, wow.
11:50Holger has been inspired by 18th century Italian theatre.
11:54Of course he has.
11:55To emulate the flamboyant comic characters, he plans to knit a stripy pink and white coat
12:00complete with exaggerated balloon sleeves.
12:03His balaclava style headgear is shaped around the ear holes and topped off with a miniature crochet crown.
12:10Bellissimo.
12:12We're working on creating some exaggerated shapes, especially around your sleeve.
12:17We're getting there.
12:18Okay.
12:19Eventually, slowly, slowly.
12:20So far, I've got the neck for the dog. I've split off for the two legs. I've done the back piece and now I'm working along the back.
12:35Ailsa has been inspired by a Glaswegian icon.
12:39In the city I come from, Glasgow, there's a statue that's famous because it's always got a traffic cone on its head.
12:45And this statue is said to have inspired some of the world's greatest street artists.
12:50For her iconic outfit, Ailsa will knit a grey jumper incorporating intarsia to spell out the dog's name in graffiti style lettering.
13:00Then, inspired by the famous Duke of Wellington statue, she will crochet her dog a tiny traffic cone hat.
13:09I hope the judges see where I've gone with it. I'm kind of concerned that they might see it a bit silly, a dog with a cone on its head.
13:17Knitters, you are halfway through this challenge. You've got six hours left.
13:29At this point in the challenge, knitters should be finishing off the body of their doggy coats and starting to move on to the finishing details.
13:39Hi, Meadow.
13:40Hi.
13:41Let's see what you're doing.
13:42I've got the body done and now I'm working on the sleeves.
13:47Yeah.
13:48So, you do use a twisted stitch. Is there a reason for that?
13:54It's just the way I've knit.
13:57OK.
13:58It's quite interesting because twisting the stitch means you use less yarn.
14:03It goes tighter.
14:04So, this is where we can see clearly that you're doing one row untwisted and one row twisted.
14:09A twisted knit stitch is when the needle is inadvertently inserted into the back of the loop instead of the front, tightening and creating a twist in the stitch.
14:21It's a common mistake made by new knitters.
14:23OK.
14:32I am behind on time.
14:34Just a little bit apprehensive.
14:35Just a bit.
14:37Just a tad, yes.
14:38It's a little bit tight now.
14:40The knitters have only a few hours left of their solo challenge to create iconic two-piece doggy outfits.
14:53Well, the sleeves are sleeving.
14:55Not as speedy as I like, but hey, what's new?
14:58While some have moved on to giving their coats their iconic look.
15:01I'm starting to brush down the fibres so that it has a bit of a spray paint effect and sort of look like graffiti.
15:11I am behind.
15:13First time crocheter Simon is having to simplify his stained glass panel into one basic shape rather than the colourful paw print.
15:21I'm just going to make up something around it to make it look like a wider stained glass.
15:25I'm not a crocheter.
15:26The stained glass is effectively winging it.
15:32By now, knitters should be moving on to the headgear.
15:38Di and Sheila are expecting careful planning around the shape of the head and the ear holes to make sure those doggy hats stay on those doggy heads.
15:48For the hat, I'm basically recreating my mascot's head so it's completely fluffy.
15:52I'm probably going to tie it underneath the neck just to make sure that it can get over his head.
15:56It's a kind of a balaclava.
15:58There's obviously a fairly big space for the ears to poke through.
16:02I'm going to do the mane for hat in what I call unicorn fur.
16:09David Bowie's wig.
16:10And we're going to knit the tri-corners round and then fold them up.
16:18In my head, it works, but whether it actually works on the dog, I don't know.
16:23Yeah.
16:24There would be some gold parts going along across to make it a little wee crown.
16:30So Di and Sheila earlier, they told me about how the twisted stitch actually changes the inside as well.
16:37So that was something new because I'm still learning.
16:39I still have a lot to learn with my knitting and I'll hopefully do more in the next few years at university and stuff.
16:47And then to go on to being a designer, that's the end goal.
16:52Knitters and hookers.
16:5730 minutes.
16:58Oh!
17:00God, no.
17:01How many?
17:0230 minutes!
17:03No!
17:04Oh, gosh.
17:05You've got to get those on, sew that up.
17:07I'm in the process of making my little feathers for the headpiece.
17:11At carnival, you make things very last minute.
17:16I've still got one more scene to do, but I decided I would sew it up.
17:21Holger.
17:23This is the jumper, this is the pussy.
17:24This is the jumper.
17:25Oh!
17:27Love it.
17:28And Dipti, where are you at?
17:30Um, coat's finished.
17:32Unicorn is nearly done.
17:33Looks great.
17:38What am I going to do with that?
17:40Kind of wanting more colours in it like that, but...
17:47So, that's me.
17:50Knitters and hookers, that is your time up.
17:53Time to put those outfits on those little doggies.
17:59That's nine doggy two pieces in just 12 hours.
18:04I did literally as much as I could right out of the wire.
18:07It was a little bit panicky at the end, but I think I did all right.
18:10Well done, knitters.
18:13Now it's time for Di and Sheila to decide who's made a dog's dinner and whose outfit is the dog's boll...
18:22Actually, I don't think we can say that.
18:24We probably shouldn't say that.
18:25I don't think you should, Tom.
18:26Anyway, release the hounds.
18:27First up, Dipti.
18:30Our designs today are modelled by doggy superstars Dobby and Dana, who love long walks, treats and playing dress up.
18:37Yes!
18:39Oh, my gosh!
18:41Aw!
18:42She's so beautiful!
18:43Aw!
18:44Aw!
18:45I love her!
18:46Aw!
18:47She's so beautiful!
18:48They're tears of joy.
18:49She's just absolutely beautiful.
18:51I've got to really congratulate you on your knitting here.
18:55Because I know that that was not your strongest point.
18:57No.
18:58We've got the lovely mane here, and then we've got the headpiece.
19:00The hornet.
19:01We've got the lovely mane here, and then we've got the headpiece.
19:03The hornet.
19:04It's even bigger and better and blitzier than we had been expecting.
19:05Thank you very much, Dipti.
19:07Lydia.
19:09I know that that was not your strongest point.
19:10No.
19:11We've got the lovely mane here, and then we've got the headpiece.
19:13The horn is even bigger and better and blitzier than we had been expecting.
19:16Thank you very much, Dipti.
19:18Lydia.
19:23The glitter.
19:24The glitter!
19:25The glitter!
19:26I can't do that.
19:27I can't do that.
19:28I can't do that.
19:29I can do that.
19:30I can't do that.
19:31I can't do that.
19:32I can't do that.
19:33I can't do that.
19:34I can't do that.
19:35I can't do it.
19:36I can't do that.
19:37Glitter. Colours work incredibly well.
19:41Very much like the Feather and Fan lace pattern.
19:46Because it does really allow the dog to move.
19:49All the stitches that you used were entirely appropriate.
19:55Tracy.
19:56I think you've embodied Bowie in that head.
20:10Well done.
20:13It's beautifully executed.
20:15You know, it's the crochet.
20:17Lovely, fabulous crochet.
20:19My reservation is in the stiffness of the coat.
20:22It doesn't show her beautiful form and shape.
20:28She's ended up with bare shoulders and a bare chest.
20:32Elsa.
20:35Aww.
20:44The lettering is fab.
20:46I haven't really seen that done before and I really love it.
20:49The shadowing effect really, really works.
20:54It's fab.
20:56Well done, Elsa.
20:58And Isaac, you're up next.
21:02Such a good boy.
21:03I love this crocheted loop stitch.
21:17So the hat is fun, but in terms of working for the dog,
21:22I'm not sure that the headpiece works.
21:25One good shake and the headpiece goes.
21:30Simon?
21:31Oh, what?
21:45So your idea was this was a stained glass motif.
21:50Yeah.
21:50I only realised when I was making it how big it had got
21:57and I was just like, gah, I can't really fit anything else in there.
22:01I would have liked to see more different colours there.
22:04Good.
22:05I loved the gothic arch that you made.
22:09The moss stitch works incredibly well,
22:11but it's been slightly swallowed up by the stained glass.
22:14Yeah.
22:16Meadow?
22:17I'm concerned about the fit.
22:30I think it looks too stretched.
22:32This should not be as tightly pulled over the back.
22:37We do love the crown.
22:39We absolutely do.
22:40And the construction's really excellent.
22:43You've shown some really lovely crochet skills there.
22:46But it's not the most secure.
22:49It doesn't quite fit the practical part of the brief.
22:56Holger?
22:57No.
22:59Go on, be fabulous for me.
23:01I love it.
23:12I have to say, incredibly well done.
23:18I just do think it's beautiful.
23:20It's beautifully made.
23:23And I always cry when I see something beautiful.
23:26Oh.
23:29God.
23:30I really appreciate the skill in it.
23:36You have achieved a headpiece that stays on.
23:39Congratulations.
23:40The execution of what you've done is pretty flawless.
23:51Stephanie.
23:53Oh, look at that.
23:55Look at it.
23:56Oh, that's beautiful.
23:58What I love about the design is the back.
24:09You've got this great pattern running all the way down,
24:12which gives it a tailored look.
24:15I'm less excited about the join here.
24:18It's not been sewn up quite so well.
24:25This is a bit messier than the rest.
24:28The hat, I mean, it's incredibly cute.
24:31Yeah.
24:31But it's not been engineered, which is what we were really looking for.
24:35Thank you very much, Stephanie.
24:43Knitters, huge congratulations on all of those amazing outfits.
24:47The judges had said about my increases being a wee bit random and stuff.
24:57I was sort of winging it a bit as I went along.
25:01I didn't really mean to make Di cry.
25:06I know it was happy tears, but it always feels, makes me feel emotional as well.
25:11Back in the yarn barn, it's time for our team knit
25:23and one final chance to impress our judges before the cast-off.
25:27For this week's group challenge,
25:30you are going to be split into three teams of three
25:33to create an iconic 80s jumper.
25:39Oh, wow.
25:40So the 80s is famous for graphic, really iconic, inventive designs.
25:49You can see we're wearing designs I made in the 80s.
25:53So we will be giving you a vintage 80s pattern for a women's jumper
25:59and we'll be asking you to make it in mohair.
26:05Just like my leg warmers.
26:06Very 80s.
26:08Totally 80s.
26:09We will be expecting to see 80s style motifs and patterns.
26:16We will also be looking for intarsia knitting.
26:23And as always, the group challenge is judged blind,
26:26so I'm going to ask Di and Sheila to leave the yarn barn.
26:29We're going to be splitting you up into three teams of three.
26:32So in team one, Simon, Dipti and Isaac.
26:35In team two, Holger, Tracy and Lydia.
26:40And in team three, Elsa, Meadow and Stephanie.
26:45You have ten hours.
26:47Your time starts now.
26:48Let's get knitting.
26:54OK, are we ready for this?
26:56Yes.
26:56I'm so excited.
26:58To transport them back to the 80s, we've given the teams an original vintage jumper pattern
27:05that they can adapt.
27:07Should we deal with shape first?
27:08Or would it be a loose crop?
27:10Yeah, OK.
27:11To create their bold 80s motifs, knitters must use intarsia, a technique used to create
27:17distinct blocks of colour.
27:19I like the idea of doing something really big on the front, maybe the music or so.
27:24Music!
27:25I like that idea.
27:28They will be using mohair wool only, a famously fuzzy and fluffy yarn, which brings its own challenges.
27:37What are some of the things that could go wrong with using mohair?
27:40With all these extra fibres, it does mean that their intarsia skills really need to be up there.
27:46Yeah.
27:47How are the teams going to work together to construct this piece?
27:51Sheila and I do it all the time.
27:53If we've got to get something to a film or a catwalk or whatever, we split it up front, back, and one person does both sleeves.
28:01But you have to work together to make it cohesive.
28:04Well, that's a challenge, especially in 10 hours.
28:09First, each team must agree on a unified design for their garments.
28:13You know what I think is super 80s is this whole kind of like scar, black and white, checkerboard look.
28:19Do you know what I mean?
28:21Okay, and then we can put silver or something down that.
28:25All right.
28:26Yeah, no, it's just, I think the whole black and white against the colour is quite strong.
28:32Yeah, yeah.
28:33We could put ribbons and embellishments, I've got lots of embellishments.
28:35Yeah, yeah, hold on, Tracy, hold on, hold on.
28:37Tracy's jumpers were full of embellishments, we need to have embellishments on this.
28:40Okay, let's make sure we can get the body done, make it look good, and go from there.
28:44Yeah.
28:47After much debate, the team has chosen Holger's checkerboard design.
28:51Sticking with the vintage shape, they'll use Intarsia to knit a black and white diagonal checkerboard motif over pastel pinks and purples.
28:59Tracy and Lydia will handle the body, while Holger knits the sleeves.
29:03Okay, so the principle design, I think we're good.
29:06And then decide if we're going to embellish it, we might have some time.
29:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:10Yeah.
29:12Over on the other team.
29:14What if we put balloons on it?
29:16Yeah, yeah, then we can mimic that on the sleeves and have like a balloon sleeve as well.
29:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's a good idea.
29:23So balloons on the balloon sleeve.
29:25Yeah, we could have it.
29:26Or the balloon strings could be the loose strings!
29:29Oh!
29:30Yes!
29:31That's actually a good idea.
29:33Their cropped jumper has one long balloon sleeve and one short, and an Intarsia balloon design on the front, complete with balloon strings.
29:41Isaac will knit the front of the jumper, Dipti will tackle the back, while Simon will take on the balloon sleeves.
29:48There may not be 99 of them, but Intarsia balloons will be a challenge.
29:52If we do one balloon, we can incorporate colour into it, so it could be like a zig-zag balloon or something like that.
29:56Okay, try not to make it too concrete.
29:58I was just thinking of maybe a simple balloon.
30:00Okay.
30:01Just in case there's someone who's not great at Intarsia.
30:03That's fair, that's fair.
30:05Over on the more musically-minded team, Meadow is running up that hill.
30:11I like it.
30:12I mean, I kind of want to do the front.
30:14I'm happy for you to do the front.
30:16The team have chosen to capture the spirit of 80s music, with the guitar motif on the front, and belt buckle design along the hem, and sheet music on the back.
30:27Stephanie will be doing the sleeves, Elsa will be on the back, while Meadow will be working on the front lead guitar.
30:34I thought the guitar would be a really nice piece for me to take on.
30:38I'm not too experienced in Intarsia, but I'm quite excited to take on this big piece and really push myself and see if I can do it, because I think I can.
30:52About to start the Intarsia, it's the start of what's going to be a balloon.
30:56Intarsia is made up of blocks of colour, which for the checkerboard team should work well.
31:03The checkerboard pattern is an Intarsia.
31:05Yeah.
31:06It's an Intarsia that's a little bit easier to knit.
31:09Yeah.
31:10For the guitar and balloon teams who need to create curved shapes, this means carefully plotting their design, shifting colour blocks gradually to simulate the curve.
31:20Think of it like building a curve out of Lego bricks.
31:23Without precise planning, the curve could end up looking distorted.
31:26I've never done this technique before, and it's really hard to see the stitches in mohair.
31:31There.
31:32See that?
31:33No, I didn't see that.
31:34This is horrendous.
31:35It's literally like knitting with hair.
31:37This is going to be a challenge.
31:38Just count them as you purl, did you?
31:40Yeah.
31:41OK.
31:42Good work.
31:44I'll count them as I purl.
31:45Save some time.
31:46Please don't talk to me.
31:49Well, I need to find out a bit more about this one.
31:51How's it going?
31:52That's quite the design.
31:53Are you planning on putting any embellishments on this jumper?
31:56Yes.
31:59It's to be determined.
32:00Is that a time situation?
32:01Oh, that's a time situation.
32:02It's a personality situation, Tom.
32:04Oh.
32:05We've just got to manage things carefully, OK?
32:06Are you less is more?
32:07Yep.
32:08And you're more and small.
32:09I'm more is more.
32:10There's a bit of a clash of opinions.
32:12If he goes to the loo last minute, I'll lock him in and then just jazz it up.
32:15Oh.
32:16Well, we'll see.
32:17Well, good luck, and I hope you finish it.
32:19You finish it.
32:20Yeah.
32:23Is there room for a little one in there?
32:25I do want to just show this, because with intarsia and colour work,
32:29that is what's going to get turned into a jumper.
32:31So you can see where she's at and how much further she has to go.
32:36It's my first time doing intarsia, so...
32:38First time doing intarsia.
32:39OK.
32:41You know, it's quite intricate to get, like, a good clean line when it comes to mohair.
32:46How are you making sure that that sits well?
32:48Not really sure.
32:49I think it's OK too far.
32:50Yeah!
32:52OK, well, I wish you the best of luck.
33:00I don't think I did it properly.
33:06You want me to count them?
33:07Yeah.
33:08All right.
33:09Fourth one in.
33:10You've missed one.
33:12I just can't keep...
33:16Knitters!
33:19Time call.
33:20You have five hours remaining.
33:23Well, how is he?
33:25I repeat, five hours remaining.
33:28You're halfway through this challenge.
33:31With only five hours left, the sleeves are taking longer than expected for Stephanie.
33:36We need more time.
33:37So the team have come up with a design change.
33:39In the interest of time, we've decided to make a bit of a change to the shape, taking away a sleeve completely.
33:47Their new off-the-shoulder jumper means Elsa and Meadow will knit their panels up to the left shoulder and seam together.
33:54So, rather than having a second sleeve, we'll have it cutting off under the arm.
34:01Also on the highway to the danger zone is Holger.
34:04My worries is the timing.
34:05If worse comes to worse, we sack off the second sleeve and then put, like, a big bow on the shoulder instead.
34:15I think it's a great idea.
34:16It's kind of more in line with what I wanted, something a little bit more out there.
34:20Somewhere it was always on the cards.
34:23I think we've found the balance.
34:24Wonderful.
34:25Hooray.
34:26And I might get a sequin and you never know.
34:37At this stage in the challenge, teams should be finishing their individual panels.
34:42But the guitar team have noticed a problem.
34:48Oh, no.
34:51I just had to panic.
34:53I'm having a panic as well.
34:54About where the decreases are.
34:55Yes.
34:57Yeah, you've decreased on the wrong sides.
35:04Ailsa has knitted her panel to cover the right shoulder.
35:08And Meadow has knitted her panel to cover the left so they won't join together.
35:13I understood we managed that.
35:24Are you all right?
35:25I feel really right-headed.
35:34Unfortunately, Meadow's had to step out.
35:36So we're sort of a little bit in flux.
35:39It's the final countdown of the 80s jumper challenge.
35:51The team should now be sewing their sleeves, front and back together to create one garment.
35:56The main pieces are finished.
35:57We're going to see how they assemble and then I'm going to start sewing.
36:01Simon's about to cast off the sleeves.
36:03Dipsy's finished the bag now.
36:04She's knitting some shoulder pads.
36:05I've never made shoulder pads before.
36:07I'm knitting shoulder pads.
36:09It's like amazing.
36:13But over on the guitar team, they are a knitter down.
36:20Are you okay?
36:21Come here.
36:22It's going to be okay.
36:23It's going to be okay.
36:24All right.
36:25Just take your time.
36:26I want you to know that you are an incredible knitter as well as a crochet.
36:31And today, it doesn't define you as a knitter.
36:35I feel like I have a lot to prove.
36:38There's been times in my diving career, whether it's injury or whether it's any kind of bad competition.
36:44Don't fret about it.
36:46You've got it.
36:47Just get back in there.
36:48Get your head in the stitches.
36:49Always bring it back to remembering why you knit and the love for it.
36:54Stick with it.
36:55You're nearly there.
37:08Hello, sweetheart.
37:10Where you were.
37:11Yeah.
37:12I've carried on.
37:13Sick's really good at the back.
37:14Good.
37:17With Meadow back, the team must come up with a plan to attach the front and back together
37:21so they have a complete jumper.
37:23What we might have to do is have really short straps and pull that right over the shoulder.
37:28We'll have to find a magic way of sewing it together somehow.
37:32I see something that resembles a jumper over here.
37:41Yes.
37:44Well, it definitely fits over my head, just maybe not quite my hair.
37:48Right, we've got still quite a bit of stitching today.
37:51Big, puffy sleeve.
37:53For team checkerboard, Lydia and Tracy are both knitting the new bow for their adapted design,
38:00whilst Holger seams the front and back panels together.
38:03Now I'm feeling the pressure.
38:06It's going to be almost like the checkered flag at the finish line, isn't it?
38:10And for the guitar team, they must piece together their panels as best they can.
38:15We need to just put it on a body just to see how low it drops.
38:19That's my biggest concern.
38:21Because when you put it up against the body, this piece, which is the underarm,
38:26actually becomes so low, it's revealing a breast.
38:29Knitters, you have one hour until your 80s jumper needs to be complete.
38:39Just one.
38:40Leave it out.
38:41Go and take a dive.
38:43Take a dive?
38:46We can do this, ladies.
38:47We can do this.
38:48We can, we can, we can.
38:51The bow, so that's the look.
38:52Yeah.
38:53That is the look.
38:54Yeah.
38:57Just a couple of quick stitches in there, mate.
38:58Yeah, I am, I am.
38:59It's not worth doing poorly, because if you do it poorly...
39:02Just stop talking.
39:03Do your thing.
39:07Does it, is it reaching the other side?
39:08You're sweet, don't you?
39:09Yeah.
39:10Let me get a, a pin.
39:11Pin it in.
39:12There you go.
39:13So that's one less thing to sew.
39:17Oh, jeez.
39:18Sorry.
39:20Oh, guys, guys, guys, guys, guys.
39:22Quick check from the front.
39:23Do you like it?
39:24Yeah.
39:25I'm happy.
39:26Yeah.
39:27She's done.
39:28She is done.
39:29There you go.
39:30Oh, there we go.
39:31Oh, the holders.
39:32Oh.
39:33Good grief.
39:34Knitters.
39:35Needles down.
39:36Your time is up.
39:37Yeah, we did it.
39:38Well done, girls.
39:39Well done.
39:40We did all right.
39:41It's a jumper.
39:42Almost.
39:43No, we've done all right.
39:44Team.
39:45Team.
39:46Team.
39:48Brilliant.
39:49Tracey and Holger, as a combination, maybe let's not do that again.
39:54Well done, knitters.
39:55Needles down.
39:56Your time is up.
39:57Yeah, we did it.
39:58Well done, girls.
39:59Well done, girls.
40:00Well done, we did all right.
40:01It's a jumper.
40:02Almost.
40:03No, we've done all right.
40:04Team.
40:05Team.
40:07Brilliant.
40:08Tracey and Holger, as a combination, maybe let's not do that again.
40:11Well done, knitters.
40:16There's a lot of anticipation in the air, as well as a lot of 80s hairspray.
40:20All right.
40:21Speaking of, let's take it back to the 80s.
40:24Ooh.
40:25Ooh.
40:30Hey.
40:32Ooh.
40:33Woo hoo.
40:51Ooh.
40:54OK, ladies, what do we think?
41:11That's really, really lovely.
41:13Yeah, very.
41:14Well, you've got that kind of dance vibe from the 80s.
41:16Well, you have with the leggings, that works.
41:19Slightly cropped.
41:21I'm a wee bit concerned about the length of this sleeve.
41:26I appreciate that they were going for the balloon sleeve and the balloons, but it's...
41:31And if it had been pulled in tighter at the cuff.
41:34Yeah.
41:35Would you mind turning round and we can look at the back?
41:37So, another balloon.
41:39That's not quite worked, has it?
41:42You really need a carefully thought out chart...
41:45To get the curve, absolutely.
41:47Straighter lines are more straightforward.
41:49I do love that.
41:51We can ask someone to.
41:52There's some really nice ideas in here, aren't there?
41:54Yeah.
41:56And what do you think of the second jumper?
42:05So, there's a guitar across the front, which is a very ambitious design, isn't it?
42:09It certainly is.
42:09A lot of detail.
42:11The definition, and again, that rounded shaping of the guitar.
42:17See, it's why we're not getting a really good shape.
42:20The thing about intarsia is that you actually shouldn't end up with any holes, and there
42:26are some here.
42:27So, some ink, let me just look.
42:35Ah.
42:36So.
42:36They've knitted them both going in the same direction.
42:39Yeah.
42:41They don't align.
42:43The back is pinned, I think because of the difficulty with the asymmetry.
42:49Yes.
42:50It's such an ambitious design.
42:53It's not entirely worked.
42:56And what do you think of the third jumper?
43:03Well, Sheila, I think this is a really dramatic design.
43:06I like the graphic.
43:08Checkerboard.
43:09It's beautifully knitted.
43:10Nice intarsia.
43:11Good intarsia.
43:12Really good intarsia.
43:14Some nice surprises along the way.
43:17Yeah.
43:18This is...
43:20Nice.
43:20This is interesting.
43:23It's really lovely, isn't it?
43:24You like the ball.
43:25Yeah, I do.
43:26You like the ball.
43:26I think that's a lovely detail.
43:29You know that thing when you've got to think on your feet, and you know you haven't got time,
43:32and it's going on the catwalk tomorrow, and you end up thinking, what are we going to do?
43:38There's a real sense of people working very well together on this.
43:44You know, they're all singing from the same hymn sheet.
43:56Okay, Di and Sheila, it's time to make your decision.
44:00We have made a decision, and in third place this week is the guitar sweater.
44:09So, who did that one?
44:10It was a really ambitious project.
44:14It's a shame about the neck and it not being finished.
44:18Yeah.
44:19So, in second place is the balloon sweater.
44:29So, can I ask who did this?
44:30I like the idea very much.
44:33Kind of light, airy, 80s fun.
44:36So, I guess there was a lot that we liked about this.
44:41One thing we particularly liked was we would be really hard-pressed to say that it was three different knitters.
44:49So, I definitely do think I put too much pressure on myself, I was really worried about the time and I also took on quite a big piece and complicated piece that I maybe didn't have the skills at the time to do.
45:03I hope I've done enough.
45:04I hope I've done enough.
45:05I do hope I've done enough.
45:06I've done my all.
45:08Well, what an amazing icon week.
45:13That was so much fun.
45:15But I have to get out of you.
45:18Who's in trouble?
45:20Well, Stephanie, we did like the idea of the Chelsea pensioner icon.
45:30But her sewing skills here really let her down.
45:33The 80s jumper that Stephanie was a part of the team really was not a success at all.
45:40So, I think Meadow, her intarsia skills were not great.
45:45She was ambitious but maybe over-ambitious.
45:48There were actually quite a lot of mistakes.
45:52Who's up for big knitter this week?
45:55For me, Holger nailed it.
45:57His design skills are immaculate.
46:02Lydia.
46:05I love Lydia's design.
46:07Yes.
46:08I really do.
46:09So, it is a tough one this week but we have decided.
46:21Well done, knitters.
46:23I mean, you've absolutely smashed icons week.
46:26But it's a competition.
46:28So, we are going to find out who has reached true perfection and who will sadly be cast off.
46:35So, our big knitter this week is Holger.
46:43Hey.
46:44Many congratulations.
46:45I'm going to give Holger his sheep badge.
46:48There you are.
46:54And now for the part that we all hate.
46:58The person being cast off is Meadow.
47:11You should be really, really proud of everything that you've done here.
47:15It's very sad to be leaving.
47:16I've learned so many life skills and being with the other knitters as well, seeing what different
47:25things they do and how I can take that into my own knitting.
47:28It's been so incredible.
47:29Meadow is so creative.
47:31I know she's not been knitting for very long but I also know she can turn out some really good stuff.
47:36So, I'm very excited to see what she creates.
47:38It's been a delight, you know, to be in her presence, to see her ideas.
47:42But her stitch work let her down unfortunately and it was just really sadly time for her to go.
47:48I'm really happy that I've taken part and had this experience and I've loved every minute of it.
47:56Next time, we're heading to the beach as the knitters design swimsuits for Team GB.
48:07So, a little on the skimpy side.
48:10And attempt to crochet a deck chair.
48:14Can someone grab me a pina colada please?
48:16I mean at this point what am I doing?
48:40I mean at this point what am I doing?
48:41It's really cool that we go a little bit.
48:44We're going to keep writing about where to get a picture.
48:47I'm so I'm missing a picture.
48:48And I'm really going to keep writing about what is thegt.
48:50And I'm really happy because I'm going to do a little bit.
48:51So, anyway, it's just a little bit to go.
48:54The chance to do a little bit more work.
48:56And now it's going to be pretty well.
48:57So, I'm going to go to the next place.
48:59I like to see.
49:00As we're going to be ready.
49:01And now, let's just connecting with us.
49:04We can't do that we can do this before.
49:05There's going to be a little bit.
49:07So, I'm waiting for this.
