00:00Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30Hello. Two games on tonight's Match of the Day. Arsenal face Tottenham in the North London
00:49derby followed by in-form Aston Villa's visit to Leeds. Joe Hart and Danny Murphy are
00:54revved up and ready to go. So, to the Emirates. The league leaders, Arsenal, looking to get
00:59back to winning ways after Sunderland interrupted a run of ten victories last time out, while
01:04Spurs were desperate to keep their unbeaten away form intact.
01:07I think Tottenham-Arsen has always been an exciting game.
01:13It's a big, big game and I do like the big games, you know.
01:20It's Emmanuel Petit for Arsenal and that is a fantastic goal.
01:25Of course, you know, we want to win that.
01:30We'll push our teams to play football and not to make war.
01:35Oh, what a try! David Bentley against his all-club! And a Bayouar! And a Bayouar! What a goal!
01:45That's an incredible strike by Harry Kane! Saka makes it free! Tottenham running riot against Arsenal! Trossard!
01:58Steve Wilson was at the Emirates.
02:01Sometimes in the long history of this fixture there have been games which signified much more than just being North London's top dog.
02:10And this feels like one of them.
02:12The results of Anfield and St James' have given Arsenal an extraordinary opportunity to exert a grip on the title race.
02:19An opportunity which Spurs would dearly love to deny them.
02:23No Gabriel for the Gunners in KPA deputises. He's been good, but he's not Gabriel.
02:29Calafiore is fit, Jokeres is not.
02:32Tottenham are the only side with an unbeaten away record in the Premier League.
02:36Five changes from Thomas Frank today and a change of formation.
02:40In come Danso, Udoggi, Bentancur, Odober and Koudis.
02:47Arsenal's current 21-year wait to be champions is the longest since they won their first title in 1931.
02:55Is this their year?
02:57This is Saka for Arsenal.
03:00Eze in a good position, and Rice!
03:06Eze in that number ten position, delightfully into Rice and he really hit it well.
03:15Gabriel watching on, and he will be for some weeks, that's not where they want him to be.
03:20And Cappier caught by Koudis, play will go on, Declan Rice to Leandro Trusser.
03:30A bit deep looking that from Trusser, but Saka's caressed it beautifully.
03:37And Udoggi does foul him.
03:40It is a free kick to Arsenal.
03:42Michael Oliver's trying to let things go.
03:44Brilliant touch from Saka here, and then Udoggi was all over him.
03:51Michael Oliver blew up in the end.
03:54Well, twenty Premier League goals scored this season, Arsenal.
03:57Ten of them from set pieces.
04:00Not counting penalty kicks.
04:02Saka with more than enough ability to put this right on the money.
04:06And it's heading towards the top corner, and ruffled the top of the net in the end.
04:13Huge week for Arsenal.
04:17Tottenham followed by Bayern Munich, and then a trip to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea,
04:23who just may be their main challengers for the title, who knows?
04:26Marino into Saka.
04:31Beautifully done.
04:32But he's knocked over by Bentancur and a card's coming out here.
04:37He'd nutmeged Van de Ven quite beautifully.
04:40And Rodrigo Bentancur made sure he was going no further.
04:4833 played.
04:51Saka's free kick, and pushed away by Vicario.
04:54A save you would expect him to make.
04:59It's a decent save, and he's probably seen it slightly late.
05:04But he'd be disappointed not to keep that out.
05:08Into the last ten minutes of an absorbing first half.
05:13There's a little bit of room here.
05:16Here come Marino.
05:18Oh, great run by Trossard.
05:19Trossard on the turn, it's in!
05:21Arsenal break through.
05:22Leandro Trossard!
05:23Yeah!
05:24Yeah!
05:25Yeah!
05:26Yeah!
05:27Yeah!
05:28Yeah!
05:29Yeah!
05:30Yeah!
05:31Yeah!
05:32Yeah!
05:33Yeah!
05:34Yeah!
05:35It's a brilliant run, and he's beautifully found.
05:38And it's a pretty tidy finish too.
05:40He kept calm, kept his balance, and delivers Arsenal the league.
05:44It's a funny-looking deflection in there having said that.
05:48Beautiful ball by Marino.
05:52As he turns and swivels here.
05:55It's come off Van der Ven.
05:57Into the back of the net.
05:59Well, the shot being on target, Trossard will be credited with the goal.
06:03Nicely done.
06:04Timber whipped in, Denzel away.
06:05Room for Rice, quickly moving it to Ezek.
06:06Wriggling on, 2-0!
06:07Two inside five minutes for Arsenal.
06:08And you can't help but feel that scoring in a North London derby has been a dream for a very long time.
06:09From Avery Ezek, since he was a very young man.
06:11And, you can't help but feel that scoring in a North London derby has been a dream for Ezek since he was a very young man.
06:39Now what he always wanted to be, an Arsenal hero.
06:44He scores against Tottenham, and the Gunners have a two-goal lead.
06:54Moved it so quickly into Eze Rice, and he showed great composure.
07:00Vicario got a hand to it, couldn't keep it out.
07:04There is a VAR check here for a possible offside,
07:09but neither were impeding the view of Vicario in the opinion of Stuart Hatwell.
07:16The goal stands, Arsenal 2, Tottenham Hotspur 0.
07:23Given Ganso off, it shall be Simons on.
07:27At four again for Tottenham.
07:34Oh, look at the space, Eze has! 3-0!
07:41Inside, 40 seconds of the second half.
07:46Eberici, Eze in Dreamland.
07:49Arsenal three goals up in the North London derby.
07:53They are blowing Tottenham Hotspur away here.
07:57Catch us if you can, is the message.
08:03Tottenham are in serious trouble now.
08:08This is a desperate start to the second half for them.
08:12But such a composed finish from Eze.
08:15The gap is wide and inviting, and the clipped shot into the corner of Vicario's net.
08:24There have only ever been three hat-tricks scored in North London derbies.
08:29Eze is a goal away.
08:31Good challenge, Anjao Palina by Mikel Moreno.
08:38Saka is bungled over, but Arsenal have the ball, have the initiative, have the advantage.
08:43Rice to Trosser.
08:44Eze is in the middle!
08:46And that little touch from Romero just might have denied him a hat-trick.
08:50Mikel Moreno.
08:52Romero again, Zubimendi!
08:55Great block, Romero.
08:59And the offside flag has gone up.
09:01You've got to credit the Tottenham skipper here.
09:04Arsenal look like they could score almost at will,
09:09but this game has surely gone.
09:12So the face, not saving the game, is what they're talking about.
09:22Great challenge, Jao Palina.
09:24Richarlison looking to lob David Raja, and he has!
09:29A piece of impudence and brilliance from Richarlison.
09:34With a big thank you to Jao Palina, who won it brilliantly here from Zubimendi,
09:38but that's fantastic from Richarlison.
09:42And that's Arsenal 3, Tottenham 1.
09:45Wonderfully done.
09:48And Tottenham Hotspur are on the scoreboard.
09:52And it's something.
09:53I believe it was their first attempt of the game.
09:56And as an attempt to go, it was a very, very good one.
10:04Saka.
10:06Kerlin pushed away.
10:08Vicario always had its measure,
10:11but he treated it with the respect it was due.
10:15Vicario's forward ball.
10:28Commanding header by Capier.
10:30Here's Marino, nicely around the corner.
10:32Leandro Trossard.
10:33Leandro Trossard.
10:34And space for Iveri.
10:35Eze!
10:36Brilliant!
10:40Only the fourth hat-trick ever in North London Derby history.
10:44And the first is Alan Sunderland in 1978.
10:50Dreams come true for Eberici Ezek.
10:58What a day for Ezek.
11:02Great composure again.
11:03Look how he allows that ball to just roll across Udoggi.
11:11Arsenal 4, Tottenham Hotspur 1.
11:15It's his day, it's Arsenal's day.
11:18To say it's been easy would be unfair on Tottenham,
11:23but it's certainly been Ezek.
11:30Vandervain, and he's lost it.
11:34And it could be a fourth.
11:36Great save, Vicario, to deny Ezek.
11:42He shakes his head, he knows, too close to Vicario.
11:45It really should have been his fourth.
11:53That is the sound of the Emirates in ecstasy for Eberici Ezek.
11:59Right now, Arsenal have the look of champions-elect.
12:02They look unstoppable.
12:04And Tottenham were no match for them today.
12:07Ezek with three, Arsenal four, Tottenham one.
12:10Tottenham one.
12:12It's only the fourth hat-trick ever in North London Derby history.
12:16I know, I just heard.
12:17So that tells you about the difficulty and what he's done today.
12:20And to be fair, he could have scored four or five, you know.
12:23But that's the play that we need to play to, in big games,
12:26create those magic moments, those actions that unbalance the team.
12:29And I thought his all-around play today was excellent.
12:33Special day for me, my family.
12:35And, yeah, happy to help the team to win today.
12:38The players in the team, the ability, the talent, there's so much.
12:41And from every angle, we're threatening to score goals.
12:44So, yeah, it's a good day today and a good performance from the team all around, I think.
12:48We can only apologise to the fans for not performing better.
12:52I was very, how can I say, confident that we could be very competitive today.
12:58But we weren't.
13:00I take always the full responsibility for performances.
13:02And the biggest thing, both halves, no matter what,
13:05it is we don't play aggressive enough, we don't get close enough,
13:08we don't win enough duels, then it doesn't matter what system we play.
13:10Nobody wins a title in November, clearly it's much too early,
13:14but it does feel like you have an incredible momentum.
13:18Yes, we have a really good momentum,
13:20but you can see how difficult it is to game every game in the Premier League.
13:24You see yesterday's results today and how teams, even when they win,
13:27how much they have to suffer.
13:29It is a long run. Let's go game by game.
13:31Enjoy tonight, then we have Bayern here,
13:34and then we have Chelsea away, so we have a massive week ahead.
13:36Yeah, it's a huge week ahead, but they have capitalised on others faltering this weekend,
13:41and so much of the talk ahead of this North London derby
13:44was about those names who weren't there,
13:46and was this going to give Spurs an opportunity?
13:48Well, there was only one name on everyone's lips at the end of it,
13:51Eberice Eza.
13:53He's a joy to watch, he's a beautiful footballer,
13:55but I have to say the Arsenal team performance was incredible.
13:58They were better than Spurs, physically, technically, tactically,
14:02and the most worrying thing for Spurs was that
14:04Arsenal wanted it more. They really did, they wanted it more,
14:08which is unacceptable from Spurs' point of view.
14:11But getting back to Eza, I mean, his best performance in an Arsenal shirt,
14:16he showed all aspects of his game and his play.
14:19He's got this wonderful knack of making the game look easy
14:23and finding space so effortlessly.
14:25Here, he doesn't even see Rice till late,
14:27still manages to find him with that beautiful little flick and creativity.
14:30This is why they brought him in, to unlock defences that sit deep and put numbers behind.
14:36Talking about the team performance, Timber there, you need runners when you've got a packed defence.
14:41Timber was exceptional today.
14:43Zubamendi there, who's the central defensive midfielder, he's ahead of Eza,
14:46and every time someone runs past him, he just drops into that little space that's vacated.
14:50Great feet on the edge of the box to skip through there and get a little bit of luck with the deflection,
14:55but still a good finish.
14:57More of the same in the second half.
14:58See how he just drops into the space when Rice penetrates.
15:03And when he gets the ball, it doesn't matter with him right or left foot,
15:06it's elegant, it's composed.
15:08There's one thing you have to do if you play for Arteta, and that's defend.
15:11They carry nobody.
15:13And if you don't do it, you don't play.
15:14Now they've got the competition for places and squad depth.
15:17And look at this for a turn of pace as well.
15:19I mean, Kudus is no slouch.
15:21And not only does he get back and help his team,
15:24probably doesn't want this back from the keeper actually,
15:27but when he gets it, a little bit more composure around the corner.
15:30And he was growing all the time, the fans adore him already.
15:33When he gets in this position again, just patient, takes his time, picks his spot.
15:41He's the type of player now that Arsenal can rely on.
15:45He's confident.
15:47He's a game changer.
15:49He's a wow footballer, that's what I call him.
15:52I mean, could have had four or five, Arteta's right.
15:55And whoever you support, you can't help but like him and enjoy his football.
16:00You'd have to have a heart of stone, wouldn't you?
16:01And their stats are speaking for themselves, aren't they?
16:04The top English player on that list in terms of goals involvement in 2025.
16:08But his story is so inspiring.
16:11Let go by Arsenal at 13 years old and then finding his way through Millwall,
16:15QPR, Crystal Palace to come back to the club that he left as a kid
16:19and do what he did in a North London derby today is just extraordinary.
16:24Well, it is inspiration, like you say.
16:26Resilience, self-belief, just complete single-mindedness
16:29and wanting to achieve his goals.
16:32To play for your boyhood team and score in a game of that size
16:36is something that will live with him forever
16:38and he will not be sleeping tonight, trust me, I've been there.
16:41It's an amazing feeling.
16:43The great thing about this now for him, he's got the fans on side, that's done.
16:47He's going to go into the next few games with no fear of anything.
16:50He's going to express himself and use his skill and show the world how good he is.
16:53He saw his belief in that tweet that he put out when he was 15, 16 years old.
16:57Yeah.
16:58When obviously those around him he felt were doubting him, but he never doubted his innate ability.
17:02Yeah, it takes a lot of self-belief to go through the things that he's been through.
17:06But he knows, he knows what a talent he is and he knew he could feel that the whole way through football.
17:10He was just looking to find his place. He certainly looks like he's found it.
17:13OK, onto a slightly drier, kind of less glitzy part of the game today.
17:18Because the second goal Spurs fans would feel maybe a little bit aggrieved by.
17:23It was awarded and was judged not to have contravened the interference rule.
17:28Now, this has been applied inconsistently, some might say, over the last few weeks.
17:32We've seen different examples of where goals have been overturned or goals have been given
17:36and yet things appear to be similar or the same.
17:38Should we remind ourselves of the rule and the examples that we've had lately, Joe?
17:41And you can tell us why you think this could be cleared up, quite simply.
17:46Yeah, last two game weeks, it's been front and centre. No getting away from it.
17:51We see the law there, four different things that you've got to understand
17:54when you're looking at an offside, especially from a goalkeeper's point of view.
18:02OK, so we've got the first example that we had today.
18:05Abrice Eze, Trossard in an offside position.
18:07Then we had Van Dijk two weeks ago at the Etihad, Robertson in an offside position.
18:12And here we have Murillo and Doi at Anfield yesterday.
18:15OK, so first example, so Trossard.
18:18So this is the one that I think, this is Vicario's vision.
18:21I think this is preventing an opponent from being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the line of vision.
18:27As it leaves his foot, Trossard is in Vicario's line of vision, offside in my opinion.
18:32Goal given.
18:34City and Manchester, different.
18:38As it leaves Van Dijk's head, he's not obstructing Donnarumma's view.
18:44As we roll it on, Andy Robertson here.
18:48Look, he's ducking out of the way.
18:49Does Donnarumma know that?
18:50Could be trying to flick it on, making an obvious action which clearly impacts the ability of an opponent to play the ball.
18:56Questionable, of course it is.
18:58There's holes in it, but if you want to make a case, that's offside.
19:01Murillo at Anfield.
19:03As it leaves his foot, and as Alisson's looking at the ball, is his vision impaired?
19:07No, it's not.
19:08But if we roll it on.
19:10At some moment, Ndoi, who's in an offside position, is preventing an opponent from being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the line of vision.
19:18Again, goal given.
19:19In my opinion, you'd have an argument to rule that out.
19:21So, for you, it would just be more consistent to say anything, anybody who's obscuring the vision of the goalkeeper in an offside position?
19:31I think so.
19:32I think that makes it, well, that's what the rules are, but they've obviously not taken them because two of those goals were given.
19:38So, it makes it very difficult, and we have these continual conversations, but with VAR, the ability they've got is to slow it down and pause it like I have there, and you can point out why the goal should be ruled out.
19:48And a lot of Spurs fans will probably even concede that actually, had the goal been ruled out, they would have gone 1-0 down instead of 2-0 down at half-time, but they were totally overpowered on every area of the pitch today and would hold their hands up and say that they just didn't have the fight they were looking for in that North London derby.
20:06Well, yeah, the lack of fight, but it's the lack of creativity in the last couple of games, Arsenal and Chelsea at home.
20:11You can see here the XG top two, lowest in the last two games, and obviously they won at the bottom three out of the worst eight this season.
20:18Yes, you can hide behind Kulisevski, Madison, Solanke not being there, but the players they've got in that squad are struggling, really struggling to be brave enough to get on the ball, to make things happen.
20:29You could argue only Kudos out of all their front players can hold his head up high a little bit and say he's created stuff and had to go.
20:37There's a lot of fear in that side, probably too much pragmatism.
20:41Thomas Frank is obviously new to it, he's working out who he can trust and who he can rely on.
20:47The reality is they've got to pick up soon because the level of performances the last couple of games is causing discontent amongst the fans for sure.
20:55On the flip side, Arsenal absolutely flying six points clear at the top of the table in a week where they have Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Chelsea at the end of the week in the league, of course.
21:06It's a huge week, could be a massively pivotal week for them.
21:09Yeah, of course, and obviously with what's going on yesterday, that was incredible.
21:12Liverpool losing, Man City losing, Arsenal getting at home to Tottenham, great performance, momentum's good.
21:17OK, thank you very much.
21:19Aston Villa didn't register a victory until the end of September, but since then Unai Emery's side have won eight of ten in all competitions.
21:26Today, they travelled to Elland Road, Alistair Mann was there.
21:31Aston Villa's outstanding form is in marked contrast to that of Leeds, whose four defeats in their last five games have seen them fall back in the season.
21:41Daniel Farka says it's certainly not a time to panic, though, and shows the faith in his side by making just one alteration to the line-up which fell at Noddingham Forest two weeks ago.
21:53Pascal Strauch is preferred to Jaka Biol. Scoring, though, has been an issue. Just ten registered in their eleven games so far.
22:02The return of Jurid Tielemans for Andre Onana is Villa's only change and small wonder after their near-perfect display in the 4-0 demolition of Bournemouth last time out.
22:13It's their away form which has let them down. Only five of their 18 points gathered on their travels.
22:20Leeds have won just one of the last 11 meetings with Aston Villa here at Elland Road, and that was more than 22 years ago.
22:32Aronson. Has he filed? Yes, he was.
22:38Rodgers penalised free-kick Leeds, and they have the opportunity here to maybe nudge in front from a set-piece.
22:50Aronson staff the orchestrator.
22:52It's a really good ball in, actually.
22:55It gets scooped up into the air, and is it over the line?
22:58It is!
22:59Leeds celebrate, but...
23:04Well, no-one's quite sure whether this goal is a goal or not.
23:09Well, there's no doubt the ball crosses the line, but is there an offside, is there a foul?
23:14In the end, it bounces off Mecha and over the line.
23:17You get the impression that they're not convinced there was a foul on Martinez,
23:22so I think it is the offside that might prevent it being 1-0 Leeds.
23:26I think it's a goal, and I think it's going to be given,
23:29and in a moment there'll be a second eruption inside Elland Road, and there it is!
23:33So Mecha has the goal.
23:36No offside, no foul on the goalkeeper.
23:40Leeds 1, Aston Villa 0.
23:43And here's proof of the offside or onside, depending on how you want to view it.
23:50Kin's elbow is the guilty party.
23:56Scoring early goals at home is such an important aspect of any team,
24:02but particularly one who have been struggling for points on their travels and losing games of late.
24:11Tielemans has a go, and there's a claim of a handball, and the referee has given a free kick.
24:18It's all happening in the opening moments here.
24:21Guendia very focused, but Lucadina has not given this up either.
24:27It is Guendia, it's over the bar.
24:31And yet another huge cheer around Elland Road.
24:36Guendia, well he was never getting that under the crossbar, was he?
24:40Rodgers.
24:41One back, Okafor emerges with it.
24:54Ties to take on Cash, and gets back at him, but concedes the corner.
24:59Sliding challenger, I wonder if Cash gets his hand on the trodner.
25:03He did, right at the end by Okafor.
25:08Well done again, a menacing presence, Strouk is in there too.
25:13Longstaff's delivery, just about cleared, Aronson just about saved.
25:20It's a good effort from Aronson, and a smart save.
25:26He's had that scowl on his face for virtually the entire game, Unai Emery.
25:37Watkins.
25:39Again, he's not going to get there because Rodgers does.
25:43Here's Camara, Watkins hits it!
25:46And that is inches beyond the post.
25:49I think the Villa supporters were in the kind of position where they thought it had gone in.
25:54They haven't.
25:57So Unai Emery's dissatisfaction at half-time is apparent with a double change already.
26:03On cams Ian Mattson and Daniel Marlan,
26:07Lucadine and Emiliano Guendia have made way.
26:17Here's McGinn.
26:19No cash.
26:22Marlan.
26:24It's a dangerous ball, and it's turned in by Rodgers.
26:29And it hasn't taken Aston Villa long to redress the balance.
26:34Marlan hadn't been on the field very long, but he's already made a contribution.
26:39And Rodgers, who darted to the near post, has helped it over the line.
26:44And within moments of the restart, Aston Villa have repaired all the damage that was caused from the first half display.
26:53Marlan darting in, and Rodgers flicking it beyond the goalkeeper.
26:58It's only his second goal of the season, and it's a timely walk for Aston Villa.
27:07He made the changes at half-time, and within moments of doing so, his side were level.
27:13And one of those substitutes Marlan involved in crafting the equaliser.
27:18Longstaff intervenes.
27:21Here's Okafor, now Metcher.
27:24Couldn't sort his feet out quickly enough, and it breaks for McGinn.
27:29Tanaka with the challenge, McGinn rides it, Rodgers brings it, Watkins has it.
27:39Watkins, saved by the goalkeeper, spilled by the goalkeeper,
27:43and between he and Stroud they somehow get it out of harm's way.
27:48There's a smile on Lucas Perry's face, but it's probably one of relief more than anything else.
27:54And Villa's second goal just seems to be in the air at the moment.
28:01Tielemans in towards the run of Rodgers, and it breaks for Barkley,
28:08who's caught right on the edge of the area.
28:11Stroud gets booked, free-kick to Aston Villa.
28:17And a hush descends over Ellen Road as Aston Villa work out who the best player
28:23to dispatch this free-kick might be.
28:25Rodgers placed it very carefully down.
28:28Sancho is making the case that he should have a crack.
28:32It looks as though Rodgers has won the verbal battle between those who wanted to take it.
28:38A pivotal moment in the game.
28:40Morgan Rodgers, who's already scored this afternoon.
28:45Does so again, and Aston Villa are in front.
28:50Morgan Rodgers making it look so very easy.
28:54And going over to the Villa supporters at that end of the ground.
29:00And he flicked it in at the near post for the equaliser.
29:04He's now just guided it beautifully over the wall to make it 2-1 to Aston Villa.
29:11It's such an unusual way that he hits it.
29:14The ball kind of holds itself in mid-air and planks into the corner of the net.
29:21And Morgan Rodgers has single-handedly turned a losing position into a winning one.
29:29One, two, three...
29:32Here's Leeds, though, with James all the way through and gets it in!
29:36Well, the Aston Villa players are all absolutely furious about that.
29:45It was a strange old goal.
29:47James just ran in and dabbed it beyond the goalkeeper.
29:51Was he onside or offside?
29:55It's so tight.
29:57The ball over the top.
29:59James, I think he's just about onside.
30:02And he runs onto it and dabs it beyond Martinez and into the back of the net.
30:08Oh, and might there be a touch off Calvert-Lewin?
30:12Was it a touch of the hand?
30:14VAR checking.
30:17Oh, I think it might be handball against Calvert-Lewin.
30:21I don't think this is going to stand because Calvert-Lewin gets the final touch.
30:26And it just strikes his left hand.
30:29It will not count.
30:31Sancho, a tackle by Roden.
30:41Now James.
30:45Piru, James, fouled.
30:48Free kick to Leeds.
30:51There's a little bit of momentum building for Leeds now.
30:56Trying to find an equaliser and prevent a fifth defeat in six.
31:02Strouk.
31:05Oh, and then just Martinez gets there.
31:09Another good delivery from Longstaff.
31:12Strouk got it.
31:14Martinez saved it.
31:16The final score here at Ellen Road.
31:19Leeds United one, Aston Villa two.
31:22The timing of the equaliser was so crucial.
31:25Wasn't it?
31:26Yes, yes.
31:27It was the key to equalise the match.
31:29And then we continued.
31:31And we had chances to score the second goal.
31:34We did.
31:35And we considered a few chances.
31:37A few chances.
31:38There were sometimes crossing.
31:40But we defend well the box.
31:42And Emiliano Martinez as well.
31:44And I am so, so happy for the players.
31:46Because the demands, the standards we are trying to set higher as possible in everything.
31:53And I really think Dale has been fantastic.
31:55Performance-wise, I was happy.
31:56You can't blame the Leeds at all.
31:58It's more like at the moment you have a period when many things are going against you.
32:02And then it's more like you have to work even harder, more details to gain the momentum back again.
32:07That's what we're doing.
32:08Let's talk about that free kick.
32:09There was a technique that you used there.
32:11Describe it if you can.
32:12I call it the Emmy Wendia.
32:14He did it, obviously, the last game before the break.
32:17It's something I've been practising on.
32:19Probably not as hard as him.
32:20Maybe not as much as I should.
32:21But once he was off the pitch and I looked around and there was no one else really that practised him, I thought, why not?
32:26I know I've got it in the locker.
32:28It's just about consistency and I'm really happy that that one went in.
32:32Yeah, it was fantastic.
32:33But is it the Emmy Wendia free kick?
32:35Well, my experience of that technique was Gareth Bale.
32:38And it used to frustrate me when I was at Tottenham of why he was kicking it so softly with so much movement.
32:45And I wasn't able to move because I couldn't pick up the line.
32:48So when I saw that today, I was so, so impressed.
32:51Like I say, that's the Emmy Wendia to Morgan Rogers.
32:53But to me, it was the Gareth Bale.
32:55He was telling me to use, almost use your ankle.
32:57So hopefully later in the piece when I show you what he means by that.
33:01But it's quite a confusing technique, but it's such a special technique if you get it right.
33:08And here we are. This is versus Bournemouth. This is Buendia.
33:11And like, I've got to clear up why this technique is leaving.
33:14Premier League top goalkeepers stood there just watching the ball go in.
33:18It's such, it's so frustrating and I know exactly how they feel.
33:21This was today. This is their 20 yard free kick. Buendia.
33:24I've got the miles per hour up there because these boys are capable of hitting 70, 80 mile an hour shots.
33:29And the fans on the side are probably thinking, whip it goalkeeper's side, whip it goalkeeper's side.
33:33Here, first ever free kick in the Premier League, by the way.
33:3647 miles an hour to have the confidence and step up and do it.
33:40Right. So what I'm going to talk you through is the technique we've known for years.
33:43Almost the David Beckham technique.
33:44We spent standing almost two, three yards to the left, ready to approach the ball.
33:49And when you see someone with that technique approaching from two, three yards to the left as we see it,
33:54there's only one style of free kick. It's the right to left.
33:57If you're a golfer, the draw. But what we see here with Morgan Rogers approaching it from straight,
34:03that already makes it difficult for Perry. As he steps up, uses that technique I've talked about with Gareth Bale.
34:09It almost looks like he's just hit below the ankle. Usually you want to be using much higher up the foot.
34:14And his technique, he's just looking to softly get it up and over the wall, makes it very difficult.
34:19And then leaves Perry stood there. And I'm going to tell you why. Here we go. This is it.
34:24So eight, here we are, eight foot ten. Goalkeeper, the goal's eight foot high, ten inches above the bar,
34:29and it goes over the wall. And he has no idea of the trajectory, Perry, when he sees it.
34:33So this is the timeframe. He's got to make a decision, move and save it.
34:37And a millisecond later, it's five foot above the goal line. Unbelievable movement, unbelievable dippage, as you would say.
34:44And as we move on to our third example, which is the teller of why he's just stood there.
34:50Like I say, Ellen Road, everyone's looking and going, why has he just stood there?
34:53So as the ball leaves Morgan Rogers' foot, it just threatens to swerve left.
34:58That left to right, sorry, that right to left that I was talking about earlier.
35:01It leaves his foot and then just dips the other way. And this is the moment Perry's set for that ball to come towards him.
35:08Calculations in his head, try and get his foot moving. And in the end, he's stuck in the mud, can't move.
35:13Morgan Rogers, over to McPhee, big high five. And they absolutely delight because they've given him the confidence to do that.
35:20They've worked on that and they believed he could. There is something of the sand wedge about it, isn't there?
35:24In the kind of trajectory and how it comes down again. Do you know what?
35:27I'll tell you this because I've practised that many times. It's a very difficult technique and there's not that many players who can do it.
35:32I mean, you need a certain type of posture with your feet. A certain kind of feet, because the flexibility...
35:38Yeah, call it like 10 to 2, 10 past 2 if you like. 10 to 2, sorry.
35:42Rather than, you know, more 12 o'clock feet where you can't open to get the groins.
35:47I know that sounds a bit weird, but I remember... It was just the 10 past 2 feet that I...
35:5110 to 2, sorry. The first time I ever was with England, I was lucky enough to be called over to practise free kicks with Beckham.
35:58And he had this wonderful flexibility within his legs, his feet, his groins to be able to get that amazing whip,
36:05which nobody else could quite copy because of the way he sets up. Physiologically, he was set up ready for it.
36:10Physiologically, yeah. Right, let's talk about the second half for Villa.
36:13We've seen this a couple of times where, obviously, you and I, Emery,
36:16was itching to get in and make a few tweaks and a few changes because Leeds had had a really good first half.
36:20Leeds were terrific first half and a lot for them to be pleased about in that respect.
36:25But he brought Marlon on to play high up with Watkins instead of the first half,
36:29where Rodgers played as a 10 behind Watkins. Buendia was on the left.
36:32So he brought Marlon on to occupy the two centre-halves to stretch the game
36:36and try and get behind Leeds, which they didn't manage in the first half.
36:39What that also did is it left a space for Rodgers to come in when he could off the left-hand side.
36:44And this is how they got the first goal. It's a brilliant impact substitution.
36:48We know Marlon's quick. We know he wants to run in behind.
36:51And we know he's had a couple of good games recently.
36:53Probably feels a little bit disappointed he's not starting with Watkins.
36:56But look, both wanting to run that way.
36:59Watkins was isolated in the first half on his own.
37:02Two centre-halves against him. It was more difficult.
37:05And then when they get out and they beat the press, look, there's the pace.
37:09There's the options. And all of a sudden, it's game on.
37:12They're finding themselves getting into the Leeds final third more often.
37:16This time, it's Watkins with the shot.
37:19It really was a clever bit of management from Emery because he needed to do something.
37:25They were flat. Leeds were comfortable.
37:27And this is a player who wants to impress.
37:29I love it when subs come on and try and impact the game.
37:31He's beating people. He's dynamic. He's making things happen.
37:34This is a great example. Look, when you play two centre-forwards,
37:37they're both in between the full-back and the centre-half.
37:40Really difficult to play against.
37:42And then the wide men get more space, get more time to come inside
37:46and McGinn there unlucky with the shot.
37:49He probably deserved a goal for his efforts in the second half, Marlon,
37:53but he just scuffs this one.
37:55But it was a really good substitution and a small tweak,
37:58but a very important one.
37:59I do have to say, though, Leeds second half, even though they went 2-1 down,
38:03they really were resilient.
38:05Came back into the game and were unlucky not to get something out of it.
38:08The attitude on the pitch, the fight that they had today,
38:12would seem to see a relationship between the manager and the players,
38:16certainly, that looks good.
38:17But in terms of the fans, there was a lot of disquiet in the crowd
38:19and a fan actually managed to get himself right in front of the Leeds
38:23dugout and was protesting and got taken away.
38:26There were a lot of noises at the end of the game that seemed to say
38:29they may be losing a bit of faith in Daniel Farker.
38:31Yeah, well, it's another loss and they're on a bad run.
38:34I think after their recent performances at Brighton away where they lost heavily
38:39and they lost at Burnley, I think there was a lot of discontent.
38:42That performance today was a good reaction even though they lost.
38:45They didn't deserve to lose the game over the 90 minutes.
38:47Yeah.
38:48But Leeds are an expectant crowd.
38:50The problem is for Leeds, we talked about Tottenham earlier,
38:52Leeds are struggling to score goals.
38:54They've got a very tough run coming up as well, haven't they?
38:57They have.
38:58Lost five in six and home is not the fortress they would have hoped
39:01it would be in the Premier League and that's what they've got to come.
39:04No, it's not.
39:05But I've been, you know, I was there at the Tottenham game this year.
39:08They had a really good performance.
39:10They performed well.
39:11They lost the game, which is unfortunate.
39:12Of course it is, but it's difficult coming into the Premier League.
39:14But I saw a really good performance today.
39:16They put a lot of pressure on.
39:17Emi Martinez needs to be on his metal towards the end of the game.
39:20That was a good Premier League performance
39:22and they were undone by a bit of brilliance.
39:24Yeah.
39:25But there's no doubt about it.
39:26They're up against it.
39:27OK.

40:33on BBC News.
40:35On BBC News.
40:37Correa.
40:38Still going.
40:39Courtesy of a fortunate ricochet or two.
40:42Gittins, that's a lovely lift in!
40:44And Chelsea are in front, headed in front by Pedro Neto.
40:49Neto finds Guiyo.
40:51Gio is taking on Twanzebien, beating him and pulling it back for Fernandes to seal the
40:59win for Chelsea.
41:01Hammered long by Areola, Wilson took that nicely, hit it well, and it's in, a cracking
41:10goal from Callum Wilson.
41:12Drilled across towards Jarrah Bowen, it will reach him, Tadipo's in there, Wilson two, dangerous
41:21and in!
41:22Callum Wilson again!
41:25Emma Nielsen, is it a handball, it is, Bournemouth penalty, Marcus Tavernier against Alphonse
41:34Sarriola, scores!
41:37Sanessi, lovely pass, Udall, 2-2!
41:44Here comes Brentford into the penalty, oh that's risky, that's a penalty, that's a penalty all
41:53day long.
41:54So here comes Igor Thiago, wrong foot of the keeper, Brighton nil, Brentford one.
42:00Here's Minty, now swarming to the task now, better ball in for Welbeck, 1-1!
42:06Oh that's a pitch and a goal.
42:11Here's Minty.
42:13Shot is blocked, comes back, and it's in, into it!
42:19Of course for Lewis Potter, he's dangerous into the box, Brentford appealing for a penalty,
42:25and they get one.
42:26And it's they!
42:27Red this side by Barth of Ribbon!
42:32It's an interesting one, and Jimenez is on the end of it!
42:44Wharton in space, Ricochet, Munoz with the opener for Crystal Palace!
42:51Wharton, Pinot!
42:55Oh he deserves that!
42:57Bruno Guimaraes, Barnes, Bruno Guimaraes for Barnes!
43:07Newcastle in front!
43:10Cherky's corner, Altamada's there, Gokou recovers the ball in towards Haaland.
43:20Brian Cherky, ball as far as Ruben Diaz, the response from Manchester City instantaneous!
43:29Murphy, really good cross!
43:34And eventually in!
43:37Incredible!
43:38It's Harvey Barnes once more!
43:40Oh, it was an inviting one!
43:44Still might be, it is!
43:46Murillo!
43:51There could be danger here, there is!
43:53Oh, Nottingham Forest have scored!
43:55And it's Nicolo Savogna!
43:58Hutchinson for Forest.
44:02Might have a shooting opportunity, good save from Alisson.
44:05Gibbs-White!
44:063-0 Nottingham Forest!
44:10OK, we've got a few minutes left, so I think we should talk all things Liverpool.
44:13And it is not, roll your eyes at me, at 20 past 11 on a Sunday night.
44:18Let's have a little look at other clubs, other teams who've struggled as champions the following season.
44:24Because it's not wholly unusual for a team to have a hard time.
44:28Chelsea, after they'd won the league, came back the following season and after this stage,
44:3312 games, only had 11 points, ended up finishing 10th.
44:37Leicester City, perhaps because that was a slight aberration and an unusual thing, wasn't it, for Leicester to win the league.
44:43You might not be as surprised with their form the following season.
44:46Blackburn Rovers as well.
44:48United, Manchester United in 96-97, only had 19 points, one more than Liverpool at this stage.
44:54And ended up winning the league that year, Danny.
44:57You've already declared that Liverpool are not going to win the league.
44:59No.
45:00I mean, the expectation is higher because of the amount of money invested was huge, even for Liverpool.
45:05Look, Slott's going to take a lot of stick in the next week or two.
45:11And he's going to be asked a lot of questions from the fan base, far and wide from the media.
45:16The reality is, yes, he is the manager and he has to take some responsibility.
45:20But a lot of the players have to look in the mirror because out of last season's players, I'd say only Sir Bozly, Graven Birch, maybe Robbo when he's come in, have even got near to the levels of last season.
45:33And that's not good enough.
45:34And that, OK, there's lots of different reasons and theories, but a lot of it's mentality, you know, because you've won summer and maybe the comfort zone a little bit because physically they're not at it.
45:44And only one of the new four or five signings, Eketike, has done well.
45:50So the players have to take some responsibility.
45:52Now, what can Slott do?
45:55He's got to make some huge decisions.
45:58And that means leaving some big players out because back to basics is key.
46:02Defending better, working harder, being more physical, doing the hard yards.
46:06It sounds very basic stuff, but he's got to pick his most physical 11 who he thinks are going to defend the best for him and start getting some points.
46:13Start getting some points on the board.
46:15Don't be thinking about titles, Champions League, FA Cups, next game.
46:20Because the reality is, if he keeps losing games, he won't be in a job.
46:24On the form table over the last six games, Joe, only Wolves are below Liverpool.
46:32Last night on Match of the Day, Rob Green and Wayne Rooney talked about leadership.
46:36They talked about getting back to basics.
46:39And you've just alluded to the same thing there, Danny.
46:42Is it as simple as that?
46:44Simple.
46:45It's definitely not simple, is it?
46:46Because if it was, a team like Liverpool are more than capable of doing it.
46:49Arnaz Slott's proved himself last season that he's a very clever manager and knows what he's doing.
46:53Just that ingredient, it's just not happening.
46:55It's gone from you, you let slide a couple of bad results.
46:58But then the other night you watched them at home to Real Madrid and they were fantastic.
47:02They absolutely battered Real Madrid, who have looked good this season.
47:05So I agree with you, Danny.
47:07Something's just not quite there.
47:08This is a really big moment for them in the season.
47:11They've probably hoped a few times they'd be able to paper over through the cracks
47:14and the new players would come good.
47:16They're not.
47:17They've got to step up and they've got to perform over the next couple of weeks.
47:19The balance is wrong somewhere.
47:21You know, there's too many players who look off it
47:24and the ones who are on it can't compensate for the ones who aren't.
47:27Yeah.
47:28So he's got to find an 11 that is prepared to just be more stable, be more compact.
47:35If it means putting more defensive players in and upsetting a few egos, you've got to do it.
47:40PSV at home in the Champions League and West Ham away the next two matches.
47:44Every game at the moment, you know, looks tough, doesn't it, for them?
47:47Yeah, of course.
47:48I think they would have backed themselves at Forest at home.
47:51The position they've been this season to win easily and they've not.
47:53They've struggled.
47:54So massive games in the season for them.
47:56OK, let's have a quick look, shall we, at the Premier League table.
47:58And Arsenal stretch their lead to six points,
48:00which is their biggest at this stage of a Premier League season.
48:03Aston Villa's win sends them fourth, with Tottenham now ninth.
48:06Leeds miss the chance to climb out of the relegation zone
48:09while Wolves are cast adrift at the bottom.
48:11Next, seven sides are separated by just five points.
48:14Thank you so much to Joe and Danny.
48:16Have safe journeys home, both of you.
48:18Good night, though, from all of us.
48:19The story of the day, Arsenal 4, Tottenham 1.
48:22It's North London for Eze.
48:25Lovely to see you next time.
48:27Thank you, A Yipo.
48:29Thank you all.
48:31Thank you, A Yipo.
48:32And if you like, if you like, if you want to go to the next one.
48:33You can have fun.
48:35Thank you, A Yipo.
48:37Yeah.
48:38You can have fun.
48:39Let's play.
48:41Anyway.
48:42I hope you like.
48:44Yeah.
