00:00But first, let's take a look at the college football playoff landscape.
00:03We've got some movement here in the top 12.
00:05Here is how the playoff would look if it began today.
00:08The rankings were revealed.
00:10Ohio State, Indiana, and A&M, they are the three undefeated teams
00:14in college football that are left.
00:16So those three would be at the top.
00:19As far as the rest of the bracket is concerned,
00:23that is when it begins with teams that will certainly have to play
00:26and get a bye after Georgia.
00:27You have Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama, BYU, and Utah.
00:35That right now is the top 12 in the college football playoff.
00:38So on the outside looking in, you have Miami at 8-2,
00:42Vanderbilt at 8-2, USC with a big game this week, and then Georgia Tech.
00:46You've got two teams in the ACC.
00:48So that thing will be worked out naturally.
00:50Let's also not forget that Notre Dame ranked 9th, Miami ranked 13th.
00:54Miami beat Notre Dame earlier in the season.
00:56So how will that work?
00:57Also, Tulane is ranked 24th, but they're in the bracket
00:59because they are the top-ranked group of five representatives that are left.
01:04So some good matchups.
01:05Texas Tech, Tulane, Ole Miss, Miami, Oregon, Alabama, Oklahoma, Notre Dame
01:11could potentially be some of those matchups coming up.
01:14The Hurricanes are hoping to sneak in there in the end.
01:16They're going to have to win their remaining games,
01:18including this week against Virginia Tech.
01:19Now, over to the National Football League we go.
01:22Quarterback changes are with us here yet again this week.
01:26Looks like Davis Mills is going to get another start for the Houston Texans.
01:30Surprisingly, C.J. Stroud going to miss his second consecutive week
01:33with a concussion that he suffered three weeks ago.
01:35He will not play against the Buffalo Bills coming up on Thursday night.
01:39An update injury-wise on the Texans was given by D'Amico Ryans
01:43ahead of tomorrow night's game.
01:45To start, just with injury updates.
01:46C.J. and Jalen will be out.
01:48Both guys are progressing.
01:49They're doing better.
01:50But right now with the short turnaround game on Thursday,
01:55just don't have enough days for those guys to be available.
01:59All right, I'm done.
02:03Can you talk about how good it is just to be seen them advance enough to be out there?
02:10Say that one more time.
02:11How good it feels just to have them out there?
02:13Yeah, it's really encouraging just to see both guys out,
02:15being able to practice and go through those things.
02:18So it is encouraging to see that they are making those steps to get themselves back healthy.
02:25Right now, the NFL landscape is changing quite a bit at quarterback.
02:29We could have three different quarterbacks starting this week.
02:32We'll start in Pittsburgh, where Aaron Rodgers has an issue with his wrist.
02:36He will not need surgery, but he has not practiced as of yet.
02:40Mike Tomlin said Mason Rudolph will get the snaps this week, but it's possible that Rodgers could still play.
02:48In the meanwhile, certainly it will provide opportunities for Mason and Will to get quality work as we start the week.
02:55And I think that's the posture that we're in.
02:58A little later in the week, we'll take a look at Aaron.
03:01And again, as I mentioned, the variables are stabilizing it and making sure that he's safe and he can protect himself,
03:09brace himself as he falls, et cetera.
03:13Pain tolerance, but that doesn't seem to be an issue with Aaron.
03:17He wanted to go back in the game on Sunday.
03:19And then lastly, obviously, how effective he can be.
03:25And so, you know, Friday's probably a big day in terms of some of those things.
03:31I know he's working his tail off to be a component of this this week.
03:37He and I talked yesterday.
03:39He expressed that directly.
03:40I'm of the mindset of supporting that, while at the same time, I got a healthy collective of guys as a team and as a unit to ready.
03:51In the meanwhile, that would be our mindset.
03:54Browns Raiders this week, if you're interested.
03:57Shadur Sanders is going to start for the Cleveland Browns against the hapless Raiders.
04:00Jamar Chase lost his appeal for what the NFL called him spitting on another player.
04:06And Jalen Ramsey, he will miss week 12 and get fined approximately half a million dollars.
04:13Not going to play in this game coming up.
04:15Also in college basketball, some top 25 matchups.
04:19Michigan State defeated Kentucky.
04:22Final 83-66.
04:24Jackson Kohler of Michigan State had 20 points.
04:27Kentucky didn't really get off on three-point range.
04:30Seven of 30 from three last night.
04:33Tom Izzo, of course, still head coach of the Michigan State Spartans, said slow start, fast finish.
04:40I didn't think we played so well early.
04:42I thought Jeremy was below average early.
04:45And in the first time out, we got him out.
04:47And after that, I thought he was spectacular.
04:50I mean, made a mistake here and there because they're a good team.
04:54But the things that we wanted to do was take away the three and rebound the ball.
04:59I think they only had six offensive rebounds and give our guys and my coaching staff a lot of credit.
05:05I thought we executed things pretty well.
05:08We turned it over a little bit more.
05:11And as good as we played defensively in the second half, those turnovers, some of them were for touchdowns.
05:17And then they got more baskets at the free throw line.
05:20And so that was the only negative for us, the positive for us was we made some shots.
05:26Those of you that are at Michigan State, I don't know, do we make more threes today than we made all year?
05:33Yeah, and that's not meant to be funny, but it is funny.
05:38Duke also beat Kansas yesterday, 78-66.
05:41Cam Boozer, 18 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists.
05:46Darren Peterson, one of the best young players for the Wildcats, did not play in this one.
05:51Here's John Shire on his Blue Devils picking up the win.
05:56Really proud of our win tonight.
05:57I thought, you know, it was the epitome of our team a little bit.
06:02The fact that all nine guys scored, but all nine guys made big contributions.
06:06A ton of respect for Kansas, their program, Coach Self.
06:12We knew, you know, unfortunately, you know, obviously Peterson being out changes their team, of course.
06:18But you also know that those other guys are going to step up.
06:20And I thought the game that White had, council, is what we thought.
06:24They put a ton of pressure on us.
06:26But I'm proud of the fact that we just thought we showed great resiliency, real game pressure on us.
06:33And we found a way to get stops.
06:34I thought the key was, you know, our defensive rebounding.
06:38That's been an issue we've had to address.
06:39Our guys did that.
06:41Held them with single-digit rebounds.
06:42We valued the ball in the second half.
06:45I think there was only two turnovers.
06:46That was a big deal.
06:48And then guys making key plays.
06:50You know, just key offensive plays.
06:52Finding a way to score, which wasn't easy.
06:54It's never going to be easy against Kansas.
06:56But really proud of this team.
06:58In the NBA last night, LeBron James made his debut, his season debut, after missing the first month of the year.
07:07The Lakers beat the Jazz 140-126.
07:10LeBron played 29 minutes.
07:12He had 11 points and 12 assists.
07:14He's now scored 10-plus points in 1,293 straight games.
07:20Wow.
07:20That's a long time.
07:21Luka had 37 points and 10 assists.
07:23Lakers are playing pretty good basketball, by the way, without LeBron.
07:26So, someone asked him in the media yesterday if he can fit in on this team.
07:31Was it yesterday's practice, post-practice?
07:33I can fit in with anybody.
07:36I don't know if you understand why that was even a question.
07:39What's wrong with these people out here?
07:41I can fit in right away with anybody.
07:44So, you know, just watching the guys' first 14 games.
07:49I missed the first 14, just watching them and seeing – I was just putting myself in position, you know,
07:55while I was watching the games of how I can help the team and how I can be successful to help those guys.
08:01You know, I still, you know, able to gain a lot of eyes when I'm driving the ball or have the ball, you know,
08:07things of that nature.
08:08You know, I had a big fella down there, a big five down there, and I got Gabe right here, obviously,
08:14and Jake, you know, our second team.
08:16We went out there and kind of pushed the lead up.
08:18That was good.
08:20Meanwhile, in the East, the hottest team in the NBA has been the Detroit Pistons, 120-112.
08:26They won 11 straight games.
08:28Magic beat the Warriors 121-113.
08:31Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:33Great to have Sam McQuillen with us, as typically when Sam comes on the show,
08:38it's all about the story of prediction markets in sports.
08:42Sam is back with us here again, and here we go.
08:45I mean, I would love for us to be able to lead off with some other sports betting news.
08:48That's not controversial.
08:50But here we go again.
08:52And, you know, Sam, the American Gaming Association, when sports betting became legal,
08:56really stepped up and wanted to make sure that the bad actors were gone
09:00and making sure that people were doing the right thing,
09:02it's kind of distressing, to be honest with you,
09:05to see FanDuel and DraftKings dropping out of the AGA.
09:10And it just shows you that the story on prediction markets is not going away.
09:15Sam, FanDuel and DraftKings are going to try to operate prediction markets
09:20in places where sports betting is not legal.
09:22The AGA clearly thinks that sports prediction markets are very much like sports betting.
09:27So this all came to a head.
09:29Tell us more.
09:30Yeah, for those of you that don't know, the AGA, the American Gaming Association,
09:35is the main trade and lobbying group for the sports betting industry,
09:40the casino industry, online gaming industry in general.
09:43And DraftKings and FanDuel have been its biggest partners,
09:46both making up 71% of combined sports betting revenue share.
09:50They've been part of the AGA for several years,
09:53and we're really instrumental in getting states to legalize sports betting.
09:57And to your point, Craig, now we have a clear departure where both companies,
10:01the biggest members, are now leaving the AGA over what they call is a split over their stance on prediction markets.
10:08DraftKings and FanDuel both plan to launch their own sports prediction markets within the next month or two.
10:14And that is a clear departure from the AGA stance.
10:17The AGA has maintained that sports prediction markets are basically sports betting,
10:21and they should be regulated as such on the state level, where you have state taxes,
10:26you know, state guidelines, fees, different guardrails and guidelines that so far prediction markets have not followed.
10:33Companies like Kalshi and Polymarket, they've been sued across multiple states,
10:37but so far they've been allowed to pretty much operate these sports betting products wherever they want to.
10:42And as time has kind of evolved on this issue of prediction markets,
10:46which we've obviously talked about a ton over the past year,
10:49the stances of DraftKings and FanDuel have really changed a lot as well.
10:52Initially, it was going to be, you know, we're going to wait this out, see what happens,
10:56see some legal clarity.
10:57And now it kind of looks like both companies are really, with this move,
11:01making the kind of committing to the idea that we're not going to get legal clarity for a while.
11:05A lot of people think we're now going to get legal clarity eventually once the Supreme Court rules on this,
11:10which if you know anything about the American justice system, that can take a very long time.
11:14But the real reasoning here is both companies have taken massive stock hits,
11:19FanDuel down about $11 billion in market cap,
11:23and DraftKings about $3 billion as well since the start of the year,
11:26when these prediction markets really started to take off.
11:28So I think that's why you're seeing them now commit to launching their own.
11:32As far as what that will do to their stock,
11:35how that will impact their relationship with the rest of the sports betting industry
11:38and other partners and state regulators, that remains to be seen.
11:42We've last week talked about Nevada saying that we're not going to allow DraftKings and FanDuel to be in the state.
11:48Once they do these prediction markets, other states have made those threats.
11:51So we'll have to see what happens there.
11:53But it's definitely a huge kind of departure from what we talked about in legal sports betting.
11:58Over the past couple of years, DraftKings and FanDuel were, you know, the biggest name.
12:02So, of course, they would be in the AGA.
12:03But we've got a much fractured kind of environment going into 2026 now.
12:07Yeah, we really do.
12:09Okay, so, you know, one other part of the story that's aside from sports betting is the idea that sometimes these markets that are left without legal sports betting
12:20open up casino wagering, casino gambling, either in person, online, different sort of ways to bet.
12:27But there are analysts out there that feel, Sam, that kind of one goes with the other.
12:31And so naturally, it doesn't feel like we're getting any closer to some of those markets coming into play here in 2025, maybe not even 2026.
12:39Yeah, when sports betting first was allowed to become legal by the Supreme Court in 2018, companies were obviously very happy to offer sports betting companies that have been doing fantasy sports and casino companies as well, like Caesars and MGM.
12:56But the real endgame for them has always been online casino legislation.
12:59That's where you make the real money.
13:01If you're an online operator, I think the margin in sports betting is about 10% to 13% depending.
13:07And when you talk about online casino, like online blackjack, other games you can just have on your phone, those margins are like closer to 50%.
13:15So that's where a lot more money comes in.
13:18Initially, kind of when online casino legislation started spreading through the United States, a lot of people thought that the more that states have been in the United States,
13:26make money off it, the more states, other states will be encouraged to do it.
13:29But fast forward to today, we only have six states where it's legal.
13:32Meanwhile, they just had a record month with over $950 million in revenue in just six states.
13:39That's way more than sports betting.
13:41But analysts, meanwhile, don't think that that is going to move the needle still.
13:45So it kind of leads the question of, you know, if not now, then when for online casino, multiple analysts came out this week and said they expect groups like the AGA, groups like the sports betting,
13:56Alliance to continue pressuring states like Maryland, New York, and Illinois to pass online casino legislation this year.
14:03And the thinking is usually if one of those big states like Illinois, for example, in the Midwest passes it, then other states around it would be encouraged.
14:11But they just don't see that happening this year when it comes to everything else we're talking about, aside from prediction markets, aside from other states dealing with casino issues like New York,
14:21which is planning to launch three downstate casinos next year, and Illinois, which is opening up another casino and dealing with the sports betting tax issue as well right now.
14:30On top of all the other legislative priorities that are non-gambling in the state, there doesn't seem to be much appetite for it this year.
14:37Now, that could always change depending on one state having legislation that picks up and influencing others.
14:43But right now, it looks like sports betting companies are going to be having to wait another year to try to advance online casino,
14:49which at the end of the day has always been the endgame for sports betting.
14:53So unfortunate for them.
14:54Thanksgiving is almost here, Sam.
14:57So a lot of folks will be watching football in the state of Missouri.
15:00It'll be the last week that they can't bet on football because sports betting goes online December the 1st.
15:07And getting ahead of things very smartly, the operators are letting you register to start betting less than two weeks away.
15:15Should be an exciting time.
15:16Yeah, only two weeks from Missouri launches.
15:28Go ahead, Sam.
15:29We lost you for a minute.
15:30Got it.
15:35All right, Sam.
15:36We lost Sam there here at the end.
15:38Some technical difficulties there.
15:40You know how this works.
15:40It's live television.
15:42So every once in a while, we get some little glitches here.
15:44If we could get Sam back, we will.
15:46But if not, great job, as always, with Sam.
15:48As we were mentioning, for those of you who live in Missouri, you can start betting on sports December the 1st.
15:54But as of right now, you can actually register to bet in advance.
15:5812 days out, we are, from legal betting on sports.
16:03It'll be a very big story for us the week after Thanksgiving.
16:07All right, Sam.
16:08We've got two minutes left.
16:09Let's close it out here with that discussion.
16:11I think I set the table for you here.
16:12You can go ahead and take it from there.
16:14Yeah, I appreciate it, Craig.
16:16We've got already sportsbooks launching their pre-signup offers in Missouri, anything ranging from $200 to $3,000 in bonus bets, depending on the operator.
16:27You have a couple of sportsbooks have held out so far from launching their signup offers.
16:32You've got Circa, Underdog, and Penn, which is going to be switching to the score bet.
16:36It'll be the first state where they aren't ESPN bet.
16:39So it'll be interesting to see kind of what offers they choose to put forward there.
16:43But this is the first state where there's going to be a sports betting launch since March of last year when North Carolina went online.
16:50So it'll kind of be a new experience for the sportsbooks that have not been going launch after launch this year.
16:56It'll be the first time they spend a lot of money, and already major operators have accounted for that huge increase in promo spending in quarter four.
17:04It'll be really interesting to see what the Missouri market ends up looking like, considering so many states around it have had it legal for a long time.
17:11Our analyst Eric Ramsey at LSR has projected over $4.6 billion in bets with half a billion dollars in revenue for the operators.
17:20Once the market matures and at a 10% tax, that's pretty favorable for operators.
17:25So, yeah, we'll see what happens when Missouri goes online, but they should be pretty excited about these sportsbooks already launching signup offers.
17:33And, of course, we'll continue to monitor for how the market goes and who's leading and, you know, everything else that comes to shake in Missouri.
17:41Check it out over at legalsportsreport.com.
17:43Sam McQuillen, thanks again for coming on the show.
17:46We'll catch up again next week or Friday.
17:48Thanks a lot, Craig.
17:50I'm getting ahead of myself here.
17:51Thanksgiving coming up next week.
