00:00But let's get started with our top story of the day, not surprising, FanDuel following
00:05DraftKings at this point with the prediction markets launching in five states, nationwide
00:12rollout coming in 2026. It's called FanDuel Predicts. They're going to have their own app,
00:17just like DraftKings does. You can make predictions now in Alabama, Alaska, South Carolina,
00:24North Dakota, and South Dakota. They'll offer contracts in all 50 states on traditional
00:30offerings based on the S&P 500 and NASDAQ, prices of oil and gas, et cetera. And then naturally
00:35diving into baseball, football, basketball, and hockey coming up here in 2026 as well.
00:40Meanwhile, a new partnership, first of its kind, a professional sports organization
00:45has partnered with a prediction markets company. The Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League
00:51are now official partners with Kalshi. It takes effect this week. Each side can use the other's
00:56intellectual property for co-marketing purposes, and Kalshi will be promoted during home games
01:02at the United Center and on Blackhawks broadcasts. First of its kind, certainly probably not the last
01:09as well. Boy, we have not seen the last of the San Francisco 49ers. They're on a collision course to
01:14potentially get the number one seed in the NFC. They absolutely smashed the Indianapolis Colts last
01:20night. Brock Purdy throwing touchdown after touchdown. One to McCaffrey. George Kittle also
01:25had a really big game, which of course was good for me, as we talked about on the show yesterday.
01:29Story for another day. 48 to 27. Game was really not even that close. The 49ers take care of the
01:36Colts who now are on the outside looking into the postseason. Colts need to win out. If the 49ers
01:41win out, they're the West champs. They're the number one seed. Here's Kyle Shanahan on the offensive
01:46explosion, which has been going on now a couple of weeks. I remember starting this offseason,
01:52bringing the guys over to my house back in OTAs and all the vets. Guys have been here for three
01:57or four years. There's all guys who, every time we've gone to OTAs, it's been all about trying to
02:02get to a Super Bowl, trying to win a Super Bowl. I wanted to make sure that we didn't really talk
02:06that way this year. We needed to focus on just trying to be the best team we could be. We'll see
02:11what happens. It's kind of been our motto all year. I was just so proud that I actually now,
02:16last night, could congratulate them and actually talk about the playoffs because they earned that.
02:19They got in there. Now it's time to position ourselves to try to do something special on
02:23that. But you got to win with it, like we said. Right now, we're not getting that done. I know
02:28this locker room's hurting. Again, I've been a part of it for a short time for two losses. I know
02:32that it's been a long slide now for over a month. I know that's tough. I've been a part of those
02:37slides. And now I'm obviously a part of this right now. And we just got to find a way to dig
02:42deep and find a way to win a football game. And we can't worry about all the scenarios and all the
02:47things out there. I know they're all out there. I know what they are. But we got to find a way to
02:51win a football game or none of the scenarios come into play. Rivers actually played well last night
02:56for Indianapolis through a pick six late that sealed the game. Meanwhile, we will not be seeing DK
03:01Metcalf of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the next couple of weeks. He has been officially suspended by the
03:06National Football League for that altercation that he had with a fan in Indianapolis. It appeared he
03:11took a swipe at the fan, also investigated to see what the fan specifically said. Nothing has been
03:16released to this point that would have shown that Metcalf should have went over and took the swipe.
03:21Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs could be leaving Kansas City. They have a deal to play in a dome
03:26in the state of Kansas starting in 2031. It's a $3 billion project. Now, again, this has been
03:32announced. See if it comes to fruition. But this is the plan for the Chiefs to move to Kansas in
03:372031. What will be the plans for John Harbaugh moving forward? Almost definitely the Ravens will
03:43be on the outside looking into the playoffs for the first time in a while. Lamar Jackson questionable
03:47for this week's game. John Harbaugh talked about feeling a little hot seat and says he doesn't believe
03:53in it. And it's never been about keeping a job. And there's no such thing as like your job or my
03:59job. You know, we we have we have responsibilities. We're given opportunities to steward those
04:06responsibilities. And you're given a job to do that until you're not, you know, and then you try
04:13to do the best. I try to do the job, not try to keep the job because there's no such thing as having a
04:17job, just doing a job. And so my focus is on always and has been for the last 18 years here
04:23and the last 41 years in coaching. Or is it 42? It's up there. It's been to try to do the best job
04:29I can today and fight as hard as I can so the guys can have the best chance to be successful today.
04:35And anything after today, I'm not thinking about because, you know, it's not given for us to think
04:40about. We don't have control over that except for the job we do today. And if we do a good enough
04:44job today, then the opportunity to do that job or a different job will be there tomorrow.
04:49Big win for Washington State at the famous Idaho Potatoes Bowl. They defeat Utah State 34 to 21.
04:57They were slight favorites. They end up winning this and the game also goes over the total.
05:02Louisville plays Toledo in the Boca Raton Bowl today at 2 p.m. Eastern in South Florida. Southern
05:07Miss, meanwhile, is in New Orleans getting ready to take on Western Kentucky. The New Orleans Bowl is 530 p.m.
05:14Eastern. And then tonight's bowl games is all solid with a UNLV-Ohio matchup. UNLV had a great
05:22season. Ohio looking for a new coach. Rebs are 6.5 point favorites, total 66.5. Now, last night in
05:30the NBA, we'll get to some of the results, but something happened on the court that you don't
05:33see very often. A player taking himself out of the game and not coming back. That's what happened
05:39last night with Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors. He got into a discussion with
05:44Steve Kerr, apparently didn't like what he had to say, and opted to essentially leave the bench
05:50and leave the game. So this forced, naturally, Steve Kerr to talk about it afterwards, saying
05:55essentially they had a disagreement. Draymond made his choice. And then when he wanted to come
06:00back later in the game, the Warriors made their choice.
06:04Yeah, we got into it, obviously. And, you know, I took the time out just because I thought
06:10we lost our focus there a little bit. And so we had it out a little bit. And, you know,
06:17he made his decision to go back to the locker room to cool off. And that's all I'm going to
06:24say about it. It's, uh, everything, everything is private. And, um, yeah, I got, I got nothing
06:30further to, uh, you know, people lose their emotions. Sometimes it happens. It is what it
06:36is. Uh, you know, we've been at this now for a long time, you know? So sometimes you, you
06:47wait people for a long time, you, there's a level of comfort. And it happens. We move
06:55forward.
06:57Meanwhile, the Warriors did win the game last night, 120 to 97 over the Orlando Magic.
07:02Steph Curry had 26. Jimmy Butler had 21. The Oklahoma City Thunder for a minute looked
07:08like they could actually lose a game in the NBA last night. They were down late in this
07:12one, but came all the way back to beat the Grizzlies 119 to 103. They're now 26 and three
07:19on the season. Shea Gilgis Alexander with another 31 point performance. Mark Dagnos said
07:24not just SGA, the entire team contributed. What did you make of not just Shea, but just
07:30the team that, you know, after they cut it to four and it just seemed like total lock
07:35in and, uh, an attack mode on both ends. Yeah. We moved the scoreboard down there, down
07:40the stretch. Um, credit Memphis. They, they kept playing cause we had a pretty good lead
07:44there that we could have held and we let them scrape back into the game. Um, with just a
07:50little bit of lack of execution, both ends, uh, into the credit of the team. We got it back
07:55on the road there pretty quickly. They're a pretty good team. I knew whenever, you know,
07:59team like that, whoever's on the court, they're always going to play hard and, you know, a lot
08:02of credit to them. But like I said, we just had a click and play our, our style of basketball.
08:08So I feel like whenever we did that, start running the floor, start sharing the ball
08:10a little bit more, getting better shots. You know, we, we got going.
08:14Oh, you'll kiss another triple double last night, 14 points, 13 assists, 13 rebounds.
08:19Guess what? Nugget beat Nuggets, beat the jazz 135 to 112. And also the Celtics took care
08:25of the Pacers 103 95. Welcome back to newswire here on sports grid. Happy holidays to our next
08:31guest, Dustin Gawker, who joins us to get into the very latest. You can of course subscribe
08:36to his sub stack to learn the very latest on sports betting and naturally the prediction
08:41market business, which is going to be what Dustin is going to be posting a lot about,
08:46I think over the next year. Welcome back to the show, Dustin. And certainly we now have
08:51the two major sports betting operations jumping into the fray with their own app for prediction
08:57markets. DraftKings launches on Friday, Bandool launches on Monday. Is there any difference
09:03in how the two companies have approached the prediction markets thus far?
09:07Yeah, I guess Merry Christmas. If you like FanDuel or DraftKings, these moves had been kind of in
09:12waiting in the wings. We've been, they've been telling us they were going to launch either late
09:16Q4 or early Q1. And now we have both of them with prediction markets. Again, we use prediction
09:22markets. They're basically offering sports betting in some cohort of states. We have DraftKings launched
09:27in 38 states. 17 of them have sports event contracts. Again, peer to peer sports betting
09:33exchange where you can bet on money lines and spreads and things like that. Interesting, like 38 states.
09:39So that's everything else. Things like financial markets, crypto markets, entertainment and culture
09:45markets. You can trade on other things there. But 17 states, including the three biggest states outside
09:51of New York that don't have sports betting or California, Texas and Florida. Florida actually
09:56has sports betting, but it's run as a monopoly for hard rock. So DraftKings is now in Florida
10:02as well. FanDuel on Monday took a different approach. Only five states, most of them very small, including the
10:08both the Dakotas and Alaska, a couple other states. They said they're going to launch in more states as
10:14as time goes on here in the coming weeks and early 2026. The big question is, do they go into those
10:20big states that they don't have sports betting in right now? California, big question with all the
10:26consternation about the tribes and the future of sports betting there. Texas seems like a no-brainer
10:30and will they be willing to push the envelope in Florida? But again, both these things just look
10:35like kind of like a sports betting app where you can better trade on the outcomes of sporting events.
10:40And this is going to be the big story of 2026 is how these consumer facing brands from the sports
10:45betting industry compete with the likes of Cal sheet, Polymarket and everybody else coming into the
10:49space. Yes. And Dustin, one of the crypto operators, crypto.com were one of the first to launch prediction
10:56markets on their site at the start of the football season. So I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise
11:01that Coinbase has now launched as well. In fact, it feels like a lot of the crypto operators are taking
11:06this hand in hand. They already have apps set up to operate this sort of stuff. So they got ahead of
11:13FanDuel and DraftKings here. Yeah. I mean, able to move fast, right? They're moving fast and breaking
11:18things. The crypto industry is very, very familiar with doing that. So yeah, crypto.com is actually the
11:23reason why we're here in the first place. Like this time last year, they certified sports event contracts
11:29and off we go. We have a year of all this growth of prediction markets and sports betting. So yeah,
11:34Coinbase just announced last week in a partnership with Cal sheet that they were launching prediction
11:39markets. They're trying to become the quote, unquote, everything exchange where you can trade
11:43on anything you want, including stocks and crypto and things like that. And then just yesterday,
11:48they also acquire a company called the clearing company, which is really new, just got started
11:53in March, got funded in August with a seed round of about 15 million. And now they're acquired.
11:59Um, so this is, uh, you can see how quickly everybody's adopting this. Like if this is going
12:04to be the way people trade on things. And again, if sports betting is a major part of this moving
12:09forward, nobody wants to be left out of this. Anybody who has a wallet is it has a chance to
12:13become a prediction market. And, you know, Coinbase has tens of millions, I think a hundred million
12:18users registered, uh, fewer than that, certainly in terms of active users, but they're a huge platform
12:24that now has access to, uh, giving access to users to, to sports betting. And this is going to,
12:30this is being done in partnership with Cal sheet. Now this acquisition means they can do it
12:33with other companies and other market makers. And, uh, it'll, we'll see how that goes in the new
12:38year, but for now it's with Cal sheet, and this is going to create what we think is a pretty huge
12:42uplift for Cal sheet volume, because that's being traded into their markets and what they're doing.
12:47So again, uh, the pace of things we've had basically had three, three, three major companies
12:52launched prediction markets just in the past week. And we're going to see more of that certainly,
12:56uh, come the new year. And, you know, poly market is still in beta as we sit here. Like they're a,
13:01they're a huge player in all of this, but they haven't really fully launched yet in the United
13:04States. And when they do, and when they ramp up, it's going to be, it's going to be something to see.
13:09Yeah. And, uh, we got some news last week about, uh, Cal sheet coming out and saying that they
13:15have certified an idea for a specific prediction and then social media backlash came and then they said,
13:21whoa, we're not really doing that. We just wanted to get it ready just in case. Now,
13:25what I'm referring to Dustin is of course, this idea that you could predict and put money on where
13:31kids end up going via the transfer portal. Naturally. I mean, I don't know that cooler heads prevailed
13:38here, or honestly, it just seems like somebody in the company was told you can't do this because now
13:42they're not going to, I don't, I don't see this happening now after the backlash that they got last week.
13:47Yeah. So Cal sheet, basically when they're a little bit behind in the weeds here about how
13:53things were cal sheet, when it wants to put up a new market certifies it with the, the commodity
13:58features trading commission, the, the federal agency that kind of oversees all this. And, uh,
14:02one day recently they said, by the way, we're going to start taking markets on if players will, uh,
14:07enter the transfer portal. Obviously this is the college football transfer portal is coming up in,
14:11on January 2nd, I believe. Um, and then whether players will actually go to a certain school,
14:16uh, and you know, this was reported before they actually launched the markets because,
14:20you know, we see this in a day in advance, what they're planning to do and it gets out.
14:24And again, like I'm like Twitter is a little bit of a, of a vacuum, right? Like it's like,
14:29it's a, it's its own thing, but like everybody was saying how dumb and stupid this is. Like,
14:34we cannot have betting on where college players are going. There's already all this, uh,
14:39this worrying concern about college betting in general, what like, and harassment of players
14:43and whether we should have props. And, you know, there's investigations around college players and
14:48college betting transfer portal on the, on the transfer portal is easily manipulable, right?
14:54Like we can, like you could, you could, one of the ways that the markets could have resolved was
14:59a player announces on Twitter that they're going to transfer. And that means the, the bet resolves as
15:04yes. Right. Think about how easy that is to manipulate, or somebody could hack somebody's
15:08Twitter account and say, I did this. Right. So it's a terrible idea that, yeah, they basically
15:12said, oh, we put markets up all the time. We don't necessarily intend to do them. They absolutely
15:16intended to do them until everybody in the sports and college ecosystem said, this is a terrible idea.
15:22You cannot do this. Please don't do this. Uh, and for now they've backed off and I agree with you.
15:26I don't, I don't see them doing this, but it is, this is the kind of wild west we're seeing at
15:30prediction markets is that they can put up whatever they want and maybe they happen. Maybe they don't,
15:35but it's good. It's happening faster and faster every day. Once again, subscribe to Dustin's
15:41sub stack. You can get all of his posts and read his opinions on everything that's happening in this
15:46ever-changing world of sports betting and prediction markets. Dustin, happy holidays.
15:50Thanks for coming on. Cheers. You as well.
