00:00this is the first time I've seen the Pacific Ocean amazing it's like paradise isn't it is
00:16gorgeous look at the waves coming over the rocks Wow I was dreaming of it I was actually just sat
00:26in a pool of my own sweat a sleepy beach town in western El Salvador El Zonte a haven for surfers
00:36chasing warm water swells what do you think of the spot it's absolutely incredible it's stunning
00:43this coastal landscape is defined by the rugged cliffs that shape the shoreline carved over millions
00:51of years by the power of the Pacific Ocean and intense volcanic activity it's Molly not well

01:06hope she gets better quickly thank you guys I've said Molly's ill actually she's revising the route
01:10all right that's what she's doing in the room oh this is nice isn't it nice after Guatemala yeah
01:18man that was tough some things there's nothing you can do bus breaks down there's roadblocks if you
01:24can't do something out there why worry because you can't do anything about it I love that I won't lie
01:28to you it was interesting to see that we had made up some ground on you because we were worried that
01:33they were going to start having two different races the three of us and then just you on your
01:38own while race positions remain unchanged the 23-hour lead for Anita and Bal has reduced to just three
01:45and a half hours it's time that we take those those front runner positions definitely I think you guys
01:51nip up to second we'll take that oh is it is that how it's not first then oh with two legs completed
02:04Roman and Harley Moon have the healthiest looking budget whilst Molly and Tyler hold the least money I
02:10think anything that helps the budget will be a priority going into this leg maybe pick up some
02:16work along the way keeping it cheap and prove to ourselves that we can be better than third place
02:20now you're doing the budgeting for this yeah I'm the banker what's the what's the secrets I'm not

03:25go we're going to Honduras baby marking the halfway point for the race Valley de Angeles Honduras the
03:38most mountainous country in Central America seated within this alpine terrain it's a former 16th century
03:46mining town and now a popular weekend getaway from the capital to reach this third checkpoint teams will
03:54continue their journey through El Salvador known as the land of volcanoes with over 20 forming the
04:00country's spine having suffered a devastating 12-year civil war followed by a rise in gang violence a
04:07recent government crackdown means El Salvador has become safer for tourists who travel after dark is
04:13still widely discouraged and rarely exists this looks good to me conchagua volcano I've never been on top of a
04:23volcano for a start it's my most favorite thing in the world to wake up in a foreign country sunrise over a
04:30unique landscape it's when I feel at my most calm it's on the road as well and it's on the right
04:35direction let's go for it yeah yeah I feel like we've had this amazing trip but it's been very to do do
04:42cluster and also my life is intense honestly dad I really want to just have a bit of peace and quiet I've
04:51worked since I was 14 like I've just worked all the time even when I was at uni I had three jobs and it's
04:57taken a lot to kind of get to this point but actually now I feel at 47 quite nice to like lower
05:03the frequency a little bit camping on top of a volcano that is a bit of me all right
05:09just get me there let's go taking advantage of the early start the pair aim to travel 185 kilometers to reach
05:18San Miguel just shy of conchagua volcano okay she said no don't know maybe half an hour leaving El
05:30Zonte travel timetables are elusive if there's a nice big juicy looking vehicle I might flag it down
05:36that teams must journey like locals hailing oncoming transport or hitching in daylight in the hope of a
05:42free ride well there's a bus there's a bus behind it there's two buses one coming behind it

06:52after the leaders siblings Roman and Harley Moon we've got to make up that time because Anita and

07:19quite good to be close to a border surely yeah so we get to Honduras as quickly as possible and you've
07:24got the option of the union which can take you up to the capital that's close to valley de angeles
07:29we could be the first ones in Honduras to leave el salvador teams could depart by sea
07:34from the port of la union although they can cover good distance by boat they must surrender themselves
07:40to the timing of the tide alternatively they could enter honduras via the main land border crossing
07:47el amatillo a spot that is well connected but often congested since we've been in el zonte it's obvious
07:54that you know there's a lot more tourists a lot more people that speak english sticking by the coast
07:58the route looks it looks so easy clear yeah let's hug the coast then going on the main touristy
08:04track we've got more chance of running into people that can help us i'm happy if you're happy are you
08:09happy i don't know but something's just telling me if we could be the first ones into honduras it could

08:30the siblings plan to bus hop through the region of surf city to reach la union and enter honduras by sea
08:37where are we going i don't actually know what do you mean we jumped on the first bus we could find
08:46we don't know if it's going in the right direction it's going inland and that doesn't feel right
08:53uh what you're finding on the signature oh you can speak english sure we're trying to hug the coastline
08:58as much as possible to get to our union is it possible you're sure but you are here right so

09:32setting off almost four hours after the race leaders the two remaining teams
09:41molly and tyler with a four minute lead on their fellow stragglers oh man you got this baby

09:55something dodgy but we got a bit of food poisoning i'm not feeling sick anymore but ty's been ill today
10:03so we just got to take it easy and i just want us to get moving right valley de anguilis where do you

10:26molly's absolutely gonna need to carry the both of us because i don't know what i've got to offer
10:31aside from carrying my own backpack at this moment i feel sick now let's go to san salvador we know it's
10:37a good transport hub and then we'll work out a plan all right yeah yeah it will be all right okay

10:54the coastal routes i am a bit worried about being on boats
10:58get seasick let's go inland again then yeah it's more north that checkpoint whereas if we're going south
11:04it might be a bit tougher to get up it does it more direct we want to we want to get ahead of some
11:08people so this looks like the quickest route to me yeah also maybe we can try and find something that
11:14we could just share together and experience together yeah and that would be special yeah it'd be nice to
11:20go to an actual beautiful town so suji toto is here it's on the water isn't it near the water that sounds
11:26fun okay okay let's try and find a bus he's off again my son quick march dylan and jackie plan to use
11:38the capital for quick onward connections north to suji toto in the mountainous heartland

14:03something like that i just feel like life is so short and i want to know that i've really enjoyed it
14:10and i do try to actively be happy i do get jealous of that you know you feel it's a choice that you
14:18feel happy because i always think like you were born with like a happy level that's here
14:25and my ceiling was like here you know even with my tablets i can't fully
14:31get there do you know what i mean i've been on antidepressants for for uh over 15 years
14:40for me they help definitely you know for some people it's therapy for some people it's just
14:46going down to the pub and having a pint with their mates like that can be their thing it's not
14:50one shoe fits all i've been through some horrible times but i've made the decision now to to come off
14:57them um because i feel like i'm in a good place in life now that i'm at a point where i've stopped
15:04taking the antidepressants it's trying to discover what my actual emotions are and don't get me wrong
15:11they really helped me through a really bad part of my life yeah but i've not known since i was 15
15:18who i am do you know what i mean like what what makes me sad or what makes me
15:23emotional or what makes me happy yeah but i i'm finding it hard i'm discovering like panic attacks
15:32again or like anxiety attacks like doing something like this for me is such a test of
15:39how i'm going to react emotionally prior to this trip i guess i just thought
15:49you were just a bit of a worrier for the sake of worrying
15:54i know i know and i know it's only been a couple of weeks but i do feel like
16:00i'm really getting to understand you better i do massively appreciate that you've been much more
16:07understanding of my thought process yeah because i know it can be confusing we just haven't spent this

17:56having traveled only 11 kilometers this leg roman and harley moon are making an early start aiming for
18:05the port of la union to get to honduras as quickly as possible

18:17dad i'm like a kid on christmas day whilst anita and bal are more than halfway across el
18:23salvador on their way to conchadwa volcano i'm really looking forward because i've never been
18:27on a volcano have you ever slept in a tent never i've slept in somebody's garage a little bit tipsy
18:33then i didn't know where i was
18:38start to come out the city a bit more now
18:42130 kilometers behind them and leaving san salvador dylan and jackie are heading for the mountains of
18:49cordillera del balsamo seeking a taste of tradition i want to try one of those rapuses oh yeah yeah
18:55yeah it's meant to be a local el salvadorian dish sounds good okay
19:04finally reaching the capital molly and tyler need to plan their next move
19:10let's get the map out because last night we were in no state to make a plan no still don't feel 100
19:16percent i can't lie about like going long distance it's a bit treacherous like one of
19:21things like this i understand so i feel like if we rest up today taking a bit of san salvador then
19:28when we feel 100 we can absolutely just go for the checkpoint where's it yeah fine today is my day to
19:35make some decisions for the both of us and yeah just lead us in the right direction feels like a little
19:42pressure today there is a lake called lake ilopango yeah just outside of san salvador i feel like i'm
19:52quite a confident person on like the surface but deep down i have a lot of doubt and that comes in
19:59when i'm making decisions because you don't want to make the wrong one that sounds the perfect plan of
20:06what i need right now let's go let's go i definitely think it's because i started in this industry so
20:13young that all my decisions were always discussed with management my parents i wasn't allowed to be
20:20independent i was always very like sheltered before this one it's too packed there's no seats i'm going
20:26to make an executive decision that the buses that come through here are all going to be too full
20:32maybe we should just get cabs okay let's just do it i'll back it all right we just need to negotiate

21:39195 kilometers to the east wow you are not kidding me the volcano of conchagua
21:50a name taken from the indigenous lenka people meaning flying jaguar
21:58formed by two stratovolcanoes the summit soars to over 1200 meters offering unparalleled views of
22:06the bay of fonseca on the pacific ocean this doesn't look real it doesn't it looks like a painting it's
22:12one of those moments when you're like am i actually here surrounded by a coastal forest home to numerous
22:19exotic avian species including el salvador's national bird the mot mot what a place to say
22:28you did your first camping experience there's a door here but how do you get into the door under the
22:33zip here i want some planks at the moment i think i need a mattress but i tell you something a view from
22:40here it's amazing
22:45and i hope it doesn't take off oh my god you look like a boy scout dad oh yes with a boggle
22:52very old boy scout king gang golly golly ging gang goo this is magnificent isn't it i feel quite at
23:03peace up here but when it's time to move i cannot explain how my brain works it just goes into okay
23:11let's figure out how we get from a to b and just make it happen i do the same sort of thing i'm always

23:23it was like get up do get up and do something don't waste the day it's a mindset it's a mindset and
23:31part of me is like that because i've seen you and mum work really hard we're an immigrant community

23:47my granddad how much money did he have when he came from india nothing that was like 1950s and
23:53couldn't speak in english yeah and also you worked really hard well we wanted to be better than us
23:58and not struggle as hard as we did and have a better life yeah i grew up in a very aspirational
24:05household one thing i was given by my parents is that i was just made to believe that i could achieve
24:10anything but also there is this huge expectation that if you're going to do something you better
24:14do it to the best of your ability there was a lot of expectation to not let everyone down and i guess
24:19everything about me is about showing that actually i am fully capable but yeah that gets exhausting
24:29i feel like i'm in a race with myself yeah it's just a constant race what's the end goal exactly i feel
24:36like i've never really known what the end goal is other than just keep going and i think there's
24:40more to me than just someone who wants to achieve maybe be more compassionate towards myself and
24:46that's it we know how hard you've worked to get to where you are yeah and we're proud of that thanks

25:22um real i've never seen anything like it a vast volcanic caldera with a depth of more than 230 meters
25:35i just can't get over the fact this is in the middle of a volcano it was formed over 1500 years
25:40ago by the tierra blanca hoven eruption which blanketed the whole of central america in ash
25:46are you feeling better after yesterday yeah i feel like this is the better piece we needed
25:51with their strength returning buenos dias they spot a chance to ease their money worries
25:57these boats need cleaning right yeah do you put our flip-flops on yeah that makes sense
26:04i reckon we do all high surfaces first and then we'll do the floor after yeah sounds like we're in our
26:10kitchen miles i can't lie i think you've absolutely smashed this choosing to come here when we're not
26:17really feeling 100 it's the best thing that we could have done i know today didn't see like a big
26:24decision but it's just like i don't want to ever be the reason we're not progressing or something yeah

26:44we could have had five more dollars for our budget that now we don't have and then i think oh no does
26:50that mean we won't eat as well today or or will we not be able to get anywhere else today you know
26:56it's just my i just spiral yeah i don't want to let anyone down you could never let me down i guess
27:03making the wrong decision in a place that's so public is really exaggerated like it's blown off
27:09yeah i know that this industry is so like cutthroat and so if i make the wrong decision
27:17you can lose it all in a heartbeat and i feel like that definitely plays on my mind all the time
27:23i always feel a little bit like you know an imposter and like i don't know i just feel like
27:31is it all down to luck and actually i don't think so i don't think so i think that you decided to
27:37carry on pursuing a career and doing the things that you want to do you decided to go for an
27:42audition and start acting i think my fear comes from the fact that i've been handed such an amazing card
27:50to be able to like live a dream career from so young that you feel like
27:58surely this is gonna run out soon this luck
28:04also though think about how many good decisions you've made in your lifetime compared to the bad
28:09decision true you completely like the balancing scales are outweighed entirely you've made some
28:14wicked decisions since we've been out i'm proud of you thank you what's great about the race is that
28:21you can see when a decision pays off and when it doesn't and i think that's quite reassuring i feel
28:26like i'm growing with the race look at that that is cleanest boat in the whole of el salvador
28:41just woke up from being half asleep and thought are we going all the way to la union for a boat and
28:47we don't even know the boat timetables having traveled for over eight hours across the country
28:52roman and harley moon are approaching the transport hub of san miguel where the road forks south to
28:58the port of la union the ferry departure point for honduras or north to el amatillo the main land border
29:06crossing someone then wondering if we get out of san miguel and head to el amatillo and to try and
29:12cross the border today is this san miguel yeah i think we should do it okay jump out yeah
29:17in the midst of anxiety we have jumped off the bus roman was feeling like we should get off and we
29:27can find 10 minutes to regroup feel very special it was a decision of let's stop and reassess because
29:35there's a fork in the road that goes to to this border or to la union and in a panic i just kind of
29:44said right let's just get to that four and figure out which one we're going to take how long from here
29:50to la union like one hour one hour and at la union one time for honduras one hour on the boat
30:07i'm sorry to pull us off yeah if i thought we were going to cross the border in the north i'd say
30:14yeah but the fact that i don't know if we will what by sundown yeah i just don't think we will
30:19your gut's telling you the union i i'll go with you yeah yeah i'll go with you worst case scenario
30:25if tomorrow there's no boat we might be able to jump in another bus that takes us yeah yeah yeah

30:45the hardest thing is realizing that you are going to have to stop and go to bed you know you just
30:50want to be there now but it's that thing of being okay with the fact that we're going to stay in the
30:55union tonight but we're going to do everything we can to get away from there as quickly as possible

31:07nestled in the northern highlands overlooking the lempa river suchi toto
31:13an ancient aztec word meaning the place of flowers and birds sweet town isn't it really pretty
31:20deeply scarred from its days as a battleground in the civil war the city used to sit close to the
31:25guerrilla groups fighting the government in the surrounding jungle dylan
31:31today it's a more tranquil town drawing visitors to its colonial architecture and vibrant markets
31:39look all the different herbs and spices look at the cinnamon here dylan how long it is oh wow
31:44i use cinnamon sticks in our christmas pudding ice cream oh yeah that's so nice yeah with ginger biscuits
31:50and raisins and cream i fancy some of that now don't you oh big time no cooked chocolate cake that's
31:56a good one i won a gold medal for my bait well tart in the village pretty cool
32:03oh this is just what we need yeah it really is love for me came straight away with dylan and i just
32:10adored him straight away he was cheeky up to mischief all the time with bows and arrows and water pistols

32:28up until dylan was 25 and left home i knew him really well but i think in the past
32:35eight years he leads a different life gracias thank you are you feeling hungry i am pretty hungry maybe

32:49you just leave voice notes. Yeah, sorry about that. I'm looking forward to visiting you

34:41Anita and Bal are still 220 kilometres from the checkpoint and need to plot their exit strategy

34:57We're going to Lamotillo by road depending on how far the checkpoint is because it looks near on the map

35:35Having prioritised leaving El Salvador quickly, Roman and Harley Moon are the first team to enter Honduras.
35:44This is what it's all about. Yesterday there was a lot of anxiety around whether we've gone the right way
35:52but look where we are. This is really special.
35:56Named by Europeans after the Archbishop Fonseca, a nemesis of Christopher Columbus,
36:02the gulf is surrounded by three countries, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.
36:08It's breathtaking to see it and it's not like anything I've ever seen before. I feel like I'm in Jurassic Park.
36:14We could have gone bus to bus to bus to bus to bus all the way around. It would have been stressful.
36:18We would have saved money but this is my kind of travel.
36:29The largest Pacific island in Honduras.
36:33Tiger Island was established as a major port by the Germans in the late 19th century.
36:39Today it is a peaceful fishing community and receives scant foreign visitors.
