00:10Have you noticed I'm pushing it in front of me just in case some snakes about
00:18This is the country number three yes, Mexico Belize and Guatemala now
00:24500 years ago Spanish conquistadors invaded the Guatemalan rainforest
00:34Determined to conquer the local Maya people by brutal means
00:38Advancing gradually through impenetrable terrain for nearly 200 years until they reach the last stronghold and Flores pretend
00:47How do you feel about a rope bridge?
00:49It's not wobbly is it
00:54My goodness me
00:56What a view
00:58Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. It is shaking. We're not going to turn back. No. We never turn back. Exactly. Hang on. I'm a, I'm a, I'm a, oh boy
01:05God. Wow
01:08Today it's host to a friendlier arrival who have gained a 23-hour lead over the other teams
01:17This is miles but all this is jungle. We're heading into that somewhere. I know
01:21You're in front of me with a machete
01:24I'd do it. You know me. Yeah
01:28Do you think the others are worried about us? Yeah, that is gonna be the thing we have to be careful of
01:34Yeah, because there's a target on our back as long as we win this race
01:37We win this race
01:39Come on, dad
01:41We need to chill out
01:43This is exactly what we need
01:46After all the stress I'm gonna eat everything I see
01:48At the first checkpoint
01:51We knew I need someone for first
01:53It's Yorkshire. I'm telling you they got this way about
01:54As three teams enjoy restorative downtime
01:56We could be a deadly force because we've got nothing to lose. We're already lost so like a wounded animal
02:01pouncing ready to pouncing ready to pouncing ready to pouncing ready to pounce
02:03Come on dad, here we go
02:04Setting off in the lead
02:05Buenas Dias

02:07Anita and Bal are first to find out where they're heading next
02:09Your hands are shaking, Anita
02:10I'm not surprised
02:10I'm not surprised
02:10I'm not surprised
02:11I'm not surprised
02:11A little bit
02:11I'm not surprised
02:12OK, I'm not surprised
02:12But we're still going to see
02:13We're still going to see
02:14What we're seeing
02:15We're seeing
02:16As we've seen
02:17Our team
02:18Going to see
02:19We're seeing
02:20And we're seeing
02:21As we've seen

02:26We've seen
02:27Come on
02:30they're heading next your hands are shaking in here adrenaline here we go your second checkpoint
02:39is el zonte where is el zonte never heard of it i think we're heading to another country dad
02:45for safety reasons travel after dark is not allowed this leg
02:52across this region of central america increased trafficking and crime at night
02:58means it's only safe for all teams to travel in daylight okay we are going into some spicy
03:03territory then the race is on come on team whip it let's do it
03:12right hell's on tay so i just asked somebody hola senor el zonte donde están ah gracias
03:21gonna issue zoom out okay san salvador's there so it's between there and there el zonte
03:28senor thank you muchas gracias okay 940 kilometers to the south el zonte in el salvador
03:39after a halt in the country's recent turbulent history the pristine coastline has begun to attract
03:45visitors this surfing mecca was nicknamed bitcoin beach after the town was an early adopter of accepting
03:53cryptocurrency as payment to get there teams could head for the caribbean taking advantage of the
04:00well-trodden but expensive tourist routes in southern belize or brave the less explored fertile valleys of
04:08western honduras alternatively they may choose to stay in guatemala a more direct but arduous routes
04:17through tropical jungle and across its precipitous volcanic highlands this looks like it could be a
04:24quick route yeah we know that they speak english in belize yes and then from there we can go down to
04:29pandurus oh yeah we're crossing then one two three borders we're going to miss guatemala completely
04:38yeah and also belize is expensive
04:43this will be the longest we've ever spent together like intensely it'll be wonderful just to get to know
04:49your parent you know you choose you choose come on we've come to guatemala yeah and we're then jumping
04:54back out of guatemala without seeing nothing so yeah no no let's let's stick to guatemala we're not a
04:58family of communicators at all we're a family of doers right dad i think we've made our decision
05:06choosing to travel south through guatemala their most direct route is via the city of caban gateway to the
05:12central highlands well coven yeah like two we're off something in the air
05:21back at the checkpoint the other three teams are preparing for the next leg of the race
05:51this is to clear your spirit your physical body your mind so you can receive our sacred medicine
06:02our sacred cacao to connect with the spirit of fish cacao beforehand there's the opportunity to take
06:09part in a ceremony to honor the goddess of the cacao tree ish cacao a revered figure in guatemalan mayan
06:15mythology we call upon your presence here we are offering your drink to bring peace in their heart
06:24peace in their spirit believed to be the source of the plant's spiritual and healing properties
06:30participants ritually drink its liquid form similar in taste to raw hot chocolate as they meditate to seek
06:37her guidance you're gonna connect with the spirit of fish cacao ask her to receive the medicine this is a
06:44special moment for you to let go today anything that no longer you need to be carrying in your life
06:50in your heart in your mind and find peace and love
06:53and when you're ready you can see
07:04i think it's really lucky to be able to have moments where you do stop and think about those
07:08things that have happened in your life but also to let go of the things that sometimes you hold on to
07:14i mean me personally i'd struggle to take those moments because i kind of don't want to because
07:19there's a lot of sadness attached to it yes that's in your safe box out of the way to protect you
07:23exactly yeah you put it in a box and you haven't got to worry about it but it's really important to
07:28to have these moments you don't want to forget thank you it's important to connect you can share
07:36so i feel a sense of peace that connection to people i've lost in my life it brings me closer
07:44um me me me and my mom lost to have someone closer um i lost my brother and my mom lost her son
08:02um his name is james
08:05and yeah i just wish i wish he could like take my place and do this do all this
08:11and travel world but he never got to
08:20my eldest brother james he um he took his life um when he was 20 i was 16. it just hit us all hard so hard
08:36doing this race is like doing it for my brother and my mum
08:39he would have loved to do something like this and think she'd like to have that kind of
08:46journey with the sun and i think i would have dreamt it for her to have that with james
08:52he's with you the whole time the whole time he was sat right here
08:56he'd be laughing at everything that that you know you're going to
09:00we certainly had a lot of laughs so far
09:04he lived life to the full he was so popular he had so many friends like he was he was my hero
09:13james was everything i wanted to be um with his confidence
09:18i really want to get out of my comfort zone and support my mom because i want to look after her
09:26on this trip because she deserves it he would be proud of me i think
09:30i know he's like he's with us with us yeah he's really he's your guardian angel i know that yeah
09:37you guys are doing it for him you know yeah yeah he's racing with us yeah he's not doing very well
09:42i feel a sense of relief and release and um relaxed actually yeah we both feel sort of
09:59the zen now don't we yeah i wonder what we've got ahead oh my god oh i'm panicking again okay
10:17oh now that's like a local bush 130 kilometers to the south anita and bal are making tracks towards
10:26kabam it's really really difficult to describe this i'm trying to soak soak it all in wherever you
10:33look it's actually green it's amazing um why are we stopping here does something happen does everybody
10:46come off here the road is closed because they're courtesy it's a three days process and no one can
10:52pass so we have to walk right the road is blocked we'll have to do some walking from here oh it's
10:59wet yeah let's do it across the country civil unrest is unfolding the gobierno emitio uncomunicado
11:23citizens who object to the proposed new law are blockading parts of the country's road network
11:31hang on what are all these guys doing is this the protest
11:35all right where do we get to coban how do we get there let's keep going we're going to be walking
11:40for a while south of the blockade the road is clear but the father-daughter team need
11:46to find a connection to coban in the next town there's a bus right there dad coban
11:55coban coban coban coban coban no
12:04god dad this is a right mission we need to seriously think about the fact that
12:09it's not going to be quick getting anywhere
12:12i just hope there is a bus what if there isn't a bus
12:16then what maybe we could hitchhike
12:19go
12:36el zonte
12:37Tell me, baby.
12:39Leaving the checkpoint just over 23 hours behind the leaders.
12:42Right.
12:43Brother and sister, Roman and Harley Moon.
12:46I think we should stay within Guatemala.
12:50I've got a real feeling that this route
12:53from Flores down to Caban looks quicker.
12:56My gut in terms of speed is saying head towards Honduras
12:59and go down.
13:01But we know it's not that expensive here.
13:03Yeah, I trust you.
13:04If you feel like you've got a gut feeling.
13:06I've got a real, I've got a real.
13:09You feel it, let's do it.
13:11All right, let's do it.
13:12We've got a plan, we've got a plan.
13:14We gonna do it.
13:15We gonna get there quicker than Bao and Anita.
13:19They can eat our dust.
13:21Unaware of the protests, Roman's gut's decision
13:24is to take the most direct route through Guatemala
13:27to save time and money.
13:29I'm really glad that he's feeling confident
13:31because I think in the first leg he was quite anxious.
13:35And so I'll sit back and let him drive it.
13:37If it all goes wrong, Big Sister will have to step in again.
13:42You ready for a jungle?
13:43Yes, Chef.
13:44Can you see the others at all?
13:46What, you think the others will be coming in by boat now?
13:48Yeah.
13:50Whoo!
13:51OK.
13:52We've got some catching up to do for it.
13:54We've got a lot of catching up to do.
13:55Right.
13:56Nearly two hours behind the siblings...
13:58Get the old map out.
14:00...couple Molly and Tyler.
14:02If we go east, we could go via Belize.
14:07Oh.
14:08We can't miss out on the opportunity to go to the Caribbean
14:10whilst we're on this race.
14:11It makes sense.
14:12It just makes too much sense.
14:14And we could do a little stop at Hopkins Beach, Belize.
14:18We could pick up a job down there.
14:19Mm-hmm.
14:20This place looks cool.
14:21Work in the kitchen or on the restaurant floor.
14:24Local Caribbean twists and on, like, a patty.
14:26That's the food that we love and adore.
14:28That is our heritage.
14:29I love a patty, me.
14:30Yeah, food.
14:31All my days, food's like our love language.
14:34Experience some home-cooked Caribbean food,
14:36which is so close to our hearts.
14:37Oh, yeah.
14:38We go to places because we know the food's gonna be wicked.
14:41Mm-hmm.
14:42We'll be a little home away from home.
14:43Every team's gonna have a weakness.
14:46Ours is probably gonna be, like,
14:47trying not to spend money on food.
14:49Yeah.
14:50Don't blow the budget.
14:51No.
14:51Right. I promise.
14:52The plan is via Belize.
14:54And then we go south,
14:56stop off probably by the coast.
14:58There's boats short-cut across the Caribbean Sea to Honduras.
15:01Sorry, that's a bit of a game-changer.
15:02Oh! I'd love that.
15:04Making a fast getaway from Guatemala,
15:07Molly and Tyler are taking a circuitous route via Belize
15:11in the hope a quick dash across the sea to Honduras
15:14will propel them towards the next checkpoint.
15:17Going back to our Caribbean heritage means a lot to us
15:20and getting a little taste of the food,
15:22the vibe, the culture will be so special.
15:27Adios. Adios.
15:29Leaving the checkpoint in last place...
15:32Welcome to hell, part two.
15:33Yeah.
15:35Dylan and Jackie are trailing 30 hours behind the leaders.
15:40The mother and son team also have the least money left,
15:43having already spent over a quarter of their budget.
15:48There could be a route through Honduras, maybe.
15:50Doesn't look too bad.
15:51I agree.
15:53And see if there's any jobs around there.
15:54Yeah.
15:55We haven't done a homestay yet,
15:57and it's something we're itching to do.
15:59It's all been brief encounters with the locals.
16:01Yeah, strangers.
16:02And it'll be really lovely to make a nice connection.
16:05Yeah.
16:06And that's going to help on our budget.
16:08See how far we can get today.
16:09It sounds like we're starting to get a plan here, don't you think, Dylan?
16:12Yeah, I think we're cooking with gas.
16:14Yeah.
16:15Save money, make money.
16:17Honduras.
16:18That's a great catchphrase.
16:21Check it.
16:22I feel like I'm getting some fire in my belly and, like, a bit more passionate.
16:27We want to try and get back in the fight, you know?
16:29Now, let's get to the bus station.
16:31Run!
16:32I've never seen Dylan so energised.
16:34Dylan's plan to get as far as they can towards Honduras before nightfall
16:39by travelling to the border town of Morales.
16:42Hola.
16:43Hello.
16:45Here we go.
16:46To have some sort of travel today is huge, considering we're late out.
16:53I wonder what you get in the water.
16:55Cramps!
16:57Over an hour to the south, Roman and Harley Moon.
17:00In agua, it's a crocodile, no?
17:03Yeah.
17:04Crocodiles!
17:05Go!
17:06That's crocodiles.
17:07That's crocodiles.
17:08That's crocodiles.
17:09Still unaware of the road blockade 70 kilometres away,
17:12they are venturing to an island deep in the Guatemalan jungle.
17:19It is right in the jungle, isn't it?
17:21One of the region's last natural reserves, Punta de Chimino,
17:25as a vital habitat for an array of native wild animals,
17:28seeking refuge from hunting and deforestation,
17:31from the anteater to the ocelot.
17:36El tigre se los puede comer.
17:38Yeah.
17:39Okay.
17:40It's the tigers.
17:42There's something about tigers.
17:43Yes.
17:44Yes.
17:45Yes.
17:46Nature lovers can stay at the island's eco-lodge.
17:49Can I get a bug spread?
17:50I'm getting absolutely bitten to shreds.
17:53Where budget-conscious Roman has agreed to work
17:56and return for bed and board.
17:58Sweeping jungle corridors.
18:00Yes.
18:01Very fast.
18:02Very fast.
18:03Very fast.
18:04Very fast.
18:05I like to think that the dynamic between Harley and I
18:11when we were growing up was classic.
18:15Younger brother, older sister.
18:17Horatia.
18:18Yeah, you ready?
18:19Ready?
18:20Three, two, one.
18:21When we were kids, I felt like I was the boss.
18:25Whenever we would play like Batman and Robin,
18:27I was always Robin.
18:28Harley.
18:29Yeah?
18:30Do you want to say something?
18:31Yeah.
18:32Señor, ¿qué haces?
18:33Oh, it's a dog.
18:35Oh.
18:36Oh.
18:37Oh.
18:38Roman was always a bit of a scared kid.
18:41He didn't like to sleep in his own room.
18:43I would be in bed and I would hear the creak of the door
18:47and I'd feel him creep in the bed as quiet as he could
18:52and I would scare the crap out of him.
18:55Every sweep you think you see like a spider.
18:58Yeah.
19:00I actually feel so guilty that I was mean to Roman.
19:04As an older sister, I should have looked out for him.
19:07I'll get the leaves out.
19:09Yeah, you get the leaves out.
19:10Do you remember when we were kids?
19:12What?
19:13When you got your first job.
19:16In a hairdressing salon.
19:17I must have been about 12 or 11.
19:19You were sweeping hair.
19:21And from that moment, I thought,
19:23Oh my God, I've got to catch up with her.
19:25I know that if you have famous parents,
19:29there's an air of people instantly judging you.
19:33Oh, that's so-and-so's kid.
19:35Nepo baby, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
19:37I think that actually drove me a little bit more
19:40to be a really hard worker.
19:42I don't know if she knows this,
19:45but Harley was always the person that I looked up to the most.
19:51I would see this person be so confident.
19:54And as a young boy, you're kind of looking at it and going,
19:56wow, like, you know, you're like a superhero.
19:59I just felt like you set the standard for me
20:02that you need to work hard as possible because...
20:06I don't disagree.
20:07I trained you well.
20:09I do appreciate it.
20:11Good.
20:16Sometimes I feel quite far apart from Roman
20:20in our day-to-day lives.
20:22And hearing that he did look up to me
20:25is like a really heartwarming feeling.
20:32240 kilometres to the south,
20:34having navigated their way through the protest,
20:37Anita and Bal are spending the night
20:39in the Guatemalan highlands.
20:41Basically, I need to leave really early in the morning,
20:44at 6am.
20:50Are there more protests?
20:51Mm-hm. All day tomorrow.
20:53In the whole of Guatemala?
20:55Mm-hm.
20:56So nobody can drive tomorrow?
20:57No.
20:59That means the other teams will have the same problem.
21:01Yes.
21:02So regardless...
21:03Unless they've gone through Belize and Honduras,
21:05in which case they have the advantage.
21:07...
21:11What they've been reported,
21:12apparently there was shots in close proximity
21:17to where they were found in Guatemala...
21:18In Guatemala?
21:19People that don't have work.
21:20No, everyone have work.
21:22The motorists don't have money.
21:23Local protests have turned into a national uprising
21:26with all major highways blocked
21:28and violent clashes in the cities.
21:30uprising with all major highways blocked and violent clashes in the cities
21:38say hey Jay having just emerged from the jungle we need to move we need to get
21:44back in the race Roman and Harley Moon are still only 65 kilometers from the
21:49first checkpoint well a national strike has been announced in Guatemala and many
21:56major roads have been blocked for safety reasons your race will be paused this is
22:01an ongoing situation and an update will be issued later today okay all right we're
22:08in lockdown in Guatemala to the south so basically we're trapped now a second
22:14team at a standstill so our advantages know what we can do so why worry about
22:22it this part of me that's absolutely like you very philosophical about this
22:26because there's nothing we can do but there is another part of my brain that
22:30is very much oh dear I think we're doing well this leg so far that was a good
22:38decision coming through yeah definitely having avoided the blockades in central
22:42Guatemala Dylan and Jackie are in the clear approaching the border to Honduras
22:47the second leg is all about underdogs coming back we're gonna clutch it that's
22:53a it's a saying in that in the gaming world it's like you get the wind against
22:59all odds he clutching the second largest but one of the least visited countries in
23:08central America Honduras it's incredibly humid very Caribbean yeah lovely while
23:15Belize relies on income from tourists this is a nation of agriculture profiting
23:23from bananas coffee sugar and cacao here we have some tools for you guys
23:30okay Dylan and Jackie have found work with farmer Roley my city that's just for me we
23:38will behave yeah we have about 2500 trees Wow okay so you really have to hurry up
23:47known for its high quality and aroma Honduran cacao is among the finest in the
23:52world go from tree to tree when harvesting the fruits must be picked before they become over
24:01ripe or the flavor of the seeds is ruined never been like this before oh oh oh it's a dog
24:07oh oh oh oh oh oh oh I can rollies showing my mom the hotspot yeah I bet she's got more than me
24:20because she's great at gardening I haven't found one yet I can't see them it's like doing where's
24:27Wally or something I need a bag where are you yeah coming you don't sweat so you're not working hard
24:41enough oh my god okay otherwise we're losing half of them it's good thing is you can't see that I'm
24:47having a little rest here how you getting on it's not easy is it to find them yeah I might have a sit
24:56down so do you think we should have a go a bit more or shall we get sacked and get on the race yeah we
25:01could we could get fired we could be like I quit I just hope he's not carrying a machete when
25:09we're talking to them they're working here the other one has something inside we've got a few more
25:17no the other bag the other bag would it be okay to go now because we're actually racing against three
25:25other teams no we cannot just stop because otherwise I have to hire people to do the rest yeah okay noise
25:32okay okay let's go there's something different about reggae music we're chilling and nothing else
25:49matters right now 180 kilometers to the north Molly and Tyler freewheeling in Belize the most diverse
25:59nation in Central America a place where cultures meet to create a unique blend of music art and
26:06cuisine bro I'm hungry first we need to get to work boy Hopkins is that way four miles right all right
26:14we'll try a hitchhike have you got any hitchhiking tips yeah not stand all together yeah yeah we got
26:22this don't worry we're going from the speed bump what great tip that's a great tip are you serious

27:54I would take thank you the capital is bad now a lot of traffic and everything is blocked there is no
27:59passage oh my god this is bad news right now what if it goes on for days what happens then is the race
28:07over for us it's either being far away from home in a new place where something's going on and you
28:15don't really know what it is you know we don't really know if it's safe for us to go outside yeah
28:19you just gotta remember to stay calm as soon as they say we can go it's gonna be full adrenaline back
28:27on it's hard to know which of the teams will be actually in Guatemala what if they went into Belize
28:32what if they went into Honduras you know jerk seafood lobster pork chop a small coastal
28:47paradise Hopkins Beach is the cultural center of the Garifuna people a mixed heritage community that
28:55emerged in the 17th century after liberated West African slaves from a shipwreck intermarried with
29:02the indigenous people of the Caribbean chef tie in the building at the heart of the community a

29:50they're so good feel a whole now taste test go for it it's nice and that it's creamy it's nice
30:02mmm that's unbelievable did you make this plantain yeah pounded it myself I know you could cook like
30:07that mmm mmm I never expected this to be of what it felt like in essentially Central America no it
30:15definitely has that feel of acceptance in Belize everyone's just blended it's in there yeah now feels
30:22quite special heritage and culture is super important to me I am Jamaican and English I went to my
30:31nan and granddad's every weekend my granddad being in the Jamaica one and like I was playing dominoes
30:36from a very young age I feel like that was my little connection to Jamaica me and you we've
30:41always been able to relate when it comes to how we struggled growing up mixed race you were never
30:45black enough to belong and white enough to not take offense especially in the UK I always felt like
30:51I had to prove to people that I was mixed or I was Jamaican I'd walk down the street with my dad
30:58and people would look at us a bit funny and it was only when I got older that I realized they were
31:03just confused as to why like this mixed race man had like a blonde pale baby you know yeah my dad
31:11sides from Jamaica but it was only until like I was in my teens did I start asking those sort of
31:16questions I always struggled with like identity and race because my mum and dad sort of split when I was
31:24six months so my mum just brought me and my brother up on our own in South London it was quite racist at
31:33some points I didn't see many other like when you look around I don't see really like many mixed race
31:38people around I was just intrigued every single time I would go through like Brixton or when I was
31:44curious I was like oh my days and that was it I definitely don't want my kids growing up having
31:50to question their identity they have to be sure who they are you know I'm so proud to be mixed race I
31:57feel like I've got the best of both worlds you know yeah oh I wish we could spend longer at the beach I
32:06know we've got a race to carry on with I love you babe I love you too
32:11let's get out of here in Guatemala the government has backed down and the protests have been called
32:28off the mood has changed all the way all the way come on dad we got it so it's safe for the stranded
32:35teams to get back on the road to make up for lost time Anita and Ball are spending big by taking a taxi
32:52avoiding the capital city still congested after the blockades they're heading 290 kilometers southwest
33:02to the city of Quetzaltenango dad if all the roads in Guatemala like this is gonna take us like two
33:10weeks to get out of here I mean it's quite cramped 200 kilometers behind Roman and Harley Moon
33:20sticking to the main road about 20 seats of us and about 50 people on here yeah but we're moving
33:27what's the name of where we're going I've forgotten already Antigua traveling on local buses to save
33:33money they're aiming for Antigua we just want to keep bolting it as far down as we can
33:43what's going on ah there's more blockages you're gonna have to walk
33:49where are we all right no idea where we are obviously because of all this strike stuff that's
33:58been going on this is what's been left over I knew it was going too well on that bus it was all a bit
34:05too easy and you can't make it up barbed wire on the floor that's who know I have never thought it
34:20would be this hard to get through a country it's wild as the siblings continue their journey on foot
34:26thank you my friend there is satisfying progress for Molly and Tyler we need to hot step it as they
34:38take a nautical option to speed them across the Caribbean Sea to Honduras this is an expensive boat
34:44but it comes at a cost we just need to get moving the fact we're going into a cheaper country yeah like
34:52he's gonna balance out I hope so I really feel like we're advancing in the race we're literally
35:00just starting across an ocean to get to another country yeah and then shoot down and we're at the
35:06check with let's go
35:07hopefully it's a simpler job compared to what we went through before already in deepest Honduras
35:26Dylan and Jackie having busted across the west country they're arriving at the second job
35:37so we've come to do some work for you tomorrow a working homestay with tobacco farmers the Diaz family
35:43smells good oh look there's a little how cute oh Lolita Lolita
35:50that dog say yeah mom droopy oh droopy yeah yeah doing game here
36:05I think Dylan wishes that she could speak English she's beautiful yeah she's lovely
36:11yeah yeah she's really sweet
36:38Dylan seems very happy in life he has loads and loads of friends but the missing link is a girlfriend
36:48when Dylan goes on dates girls tend to friend zone him quite quickly I don't know what he's doing wrong
36:54I am very single I think growing up I was always too shy to talk to girls and maybe I have been a bit introverted lone wolf kind of thing doing my gaming
37:03I need it delicious sexo perfect so Dylan is on television he's an actor
37:24nice thank you
37:33yeah thank you
37:35yeah Jeremy

37:41There says
37:50going to hang the boat
37:53and in the back
37:54a
37:55the
37:58Just 28 kilometres away, after travelling for 11 hours by land and sea.
38:17I'm wasting away over it. I'm on, like, 3%, I'll be honest.
38:21I can feel it.
38:21Molly and Tyler opting for restaurant service to refuel.
38:26I love the fact that we can share food, though.
38:28Me too.
38:29Let's go.
38:30Cheers.
38:32Mmm.
38:34We know we've probably spent the most of our budget so far on food.
38:40We knew that from the start that that was going to be our Achilles heel.
38:45So, yeah, slightly concerned about the budget.
38:54Lying on a major fault line in Guatemala's western highlands,
38:58Quetzaltenango is rocked by over 100 earthquakes every year.
39:03Mass?
39:04And one of the only buildings to have survived the seismic last century unscathed...
39:08Get back.
39:09...Bar Salon Tecun.
39:10There you go.
39:11Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
39:13...where Anita and Bal have picked up work to replenish their funds after their costly taxi.
39:19How's that pine pulling coming along?
39:21Look at that.
39:22That's not bad, that.
39:25Well done, Dad.
39:26Another one of these, Dad.
39:30I think Dad's in his element.
39:33He absolutely loves her.
39:35He's hectic, but it's good fun.
39:37I'm loving it.
39:42I'm having a really, really good time as well.
39:44I think our personalities are quite suited to this environment.
39:46It is, it is.
39:47Well, I worked bars when you were a little kid.
39:49Do you remember we lost our business?
39:54Yeah.
39:54We lost the house, we lost the factory.
39:57We lost everything, basically.
39:58Yeah.
39:59So I went out, I got a newspaper and got any job that's unveiled but starting immediately.
40:04And there was a job there for a bar work.
40:07It was in a nightclub and it was collecting glasses.
40:10So I said, I'll take it.
40:11It's quite a big deal though, isn't it?
40:15Going from running a three-storey business for your own to collecting glasses.
40:19You've got to swallow your pride to earn that money.
40:22I started a business in the rag trade in 1982 and it took off.
40:29But there was a recession coming and I became bankrupt, actually.
40:33And then we had to sell up everything.
40:35We got to a point we couldn't afford a bus fare.
40:38I do remember that I couldn't ask for anything.
40:42Well, we didn't have anything.
40:43We didn't have anything, yeah.
40:44It was hard as a man to not be able to earn an income for your family.
40:49It was very, very difficult.
40:51It wasn't their fault.
40:52This was my problem.
40:54We want to give them the best regardless.
40:56You and Mum really protected me and you just got yourselves back on your feet.
41:01Otherwise, what can you do?
41:02You wouldn't have nothing.
41:04Well, here we are now.
41:05Here we are, yeah.
41:06Yeah.
41:07I never shared that sort of stuff.
41:10I never told them, this is the type of job I'm doing.
41:12Because I didn't want them to see their dad as a failure.
41:15You know, they want to still be proud of me.
41:18I often think about what it must have felt like when they lost everything,
41:23particularly for my dad, and how that must have impacted him.
41:26You know, he's just remarkable.
41:29I do see my dad as a superhuman.
41:31It's a journey, so same as this.
41:34Yeah.
41:35If anything happens, we'll push through it.
41:37Yeah.
41:37I love an English fry-up.
41:49So if I can come here and taste the traditional fry-up, we're winning.
41:53In Honduras, having sampled some of the best Santa Rosa de Copan has to offer...
41:58We'll have a little watermelon smoothie.
41:59Molly and Tyler are back on the move.
42:04Gaining ground, the couple have the El Salvador border in their sights.
42:09Oh, bah!
42:10We could be looking at checkpoint territory very soon.
42:14Vamos!
42:14Vamos!
42:15This is like India, Dad.
42:20Come on, we could deal with the chaos.
42:23In Guatemala...
42:24We really have to watch our backs here.
42:28Anita and Bal hope to head towards El Salvador from the west.
42:32Now all roads are clear of the protests.
42:35Guatemala City.
42:36Directo, rápido y más barato.
42:40You can go to here.
42:41This is Costa Rica.
42:43Muchas gracias.
42:45170 kilometres to the south-east,
42:50after battling through the remnants of the roadblocks,
42:53Roman and Harley Moon have made it all the way to Antigua.
42:57Oh, there's a hotel. I can see a sign on the corner.
43:00Yeah, but it might be hostels as cheap as possible.
43:03Barato.
43:06A UNESCO World Heritage Site,
43:09renowned for its Spanish colonial architecture.
43:12Its biggest draw...
43:13Volcan de Fuego.
43:16Volcan de Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
43:19Trying to get a hostel now to get our bags off so we can actually enjoy walking around and actually having a look at the place.
43:27As one of the busiest tourist spots in the country, accommodation doesn't come cheap.
43:32Hotel there, with a spa.
43:34With a spa, that would be nice.
43:36That's a no!
43:38Hostel.
43:40Hostel, Tropicana.
43:42Hostel, Tropicana.
43:43How much is the room?
43:45The price is 400 quetzales.
43:47Oh, wow.
43:48Oh, wow.
43:49Look, we've got time.
43:50I want to know the other prices.
43:52But it's so thrifty.
43:54It's 400 quetzales, with breakfast included.
43:57Uh...
43:58What's that?
43:59It's possible to 300 quetzales.
44:02It's, por favor.
44:04Por favor!
44:08No.
44:09Okay, that'll do all right.
44:15Barajos, por favor.
44:16Unfortunately, we don't have any space.
44:18Nothing.
44:19Now we are in high season, so that's why you cannot find, like, a cheaper one.
44:23Okay.
44:24This is a nightmare.
44:26If I was here with a friend, I definitely would have spent the fiver around there in a nice room.
44:34Over in rural Honduras...
44:36Vuelta, vuelta, vuelta.
44:37Vuelta, vuelta, vuelta.
44:39Dillon and Jackie are finishing off their work...
44:42Where does this go?
44:43Uh, just back behind.
44:44Just back behind.
44:45...to pay for their bed and board, with tobacco farmer Don Tulio and his family.
44:50Con cuatro clases de tabaco, las que van sacando, cuatro.
44:53Oh, my goodness.
44:54Look at this one, Tilly.
44:55Oh.
44:56That smell.
44:57Amazing.
44:58Mmm.
44:59It's gonna be a star, baby.
45:02LAUGHTER
45:04It's just amazing to experience the warmth of the family, and you sort of feed off their
45:13kindness and their energy.
45:15I was just thinking James would love this, wouldn't he?
45:19I reckon he'd be smoking up these cigars, wouldn't he?
45:23Maybe.
45:24He'd love it.
45:25It's just wonderful to experience it, isn't it?
45:28I agree.
45:29And I think James would be proud of us.
45:31Yeah, I think he would be as well, yeah.
45:33He was very close to James, Dillon was.
45:36It's very rare now that we do talk about James, which is sad, really.
45:42Yes.
45:43I think this will hopefully bring him to life a bit again in our souls.
45:49Prendelo con la pierna.
45:51On the edge?
45:52Si?
45:53I think losing James makes you reassess life and makes you think how precious life is.
46:02This is an opportunity for me to grasp and live and enjoy.
46:07Perfecto.
46:08Perfecto?
46:09Yes.
46:10Dillon and I are on a different level now in confidence.
46:16We've raised our game a hell of a lot since the first leg, I think.
46:21Also, he does quite like the young lady here.
46:31It was nice bonding with Tanya.
46:34She was showing me her socials.
46:36I showed her some mine.
46:39He loves you.
46:43My mum tried to wingman me.
46:45I was like, all right, that's too much, that's too much.
46:47Like, chill, chill.
46:49I was trying to play it cool, but I don't know.
46:53Santa Rosa de Copa.
46:54Yeah.
46:55There to the border here.
46:58The big thing is to try and get across the border.
47:00Yeah.
47:01Coming to Honduras, I think, was the right decision.
47:04It's been amazing.
47:05Gracias.
47:06Gracias.
47:07We've been saving money.
47:08We've made some connections.
47:10Hello, message.
47:11Can I have your wife?
47:12Yes.
47:13I'm hoping we've gained ground.
47:14I feel like we have.
47:16Adios.
47:20OK.
47:21Such lovely people.
47:22Yeah, they really are.
47:25Yeah, that's really upsetting me.
47:27Well, just let it go.
47:28Back in Antigua, Roman and Harley Moon have been searching for somewhere to stay for four hours.
47:34Oh, here.
47:35One day, hotel.
47:36Let me just check.
47:37Hola.
47:38¿Qué tal?
47:39Muy bien.
47:40Hola, hola.
47:41Hola.
47:42Perdona.
47:43¿Estás cansada?
47:44¿Estás cansada?
47:45¿Estás cansada?
47:46¿Estás cansada para dos?
47:47Adelante, por favor.
47:48Oh, thank God.
47:49Thank God.
47:50Bunkwood.
47:51Great.
47:52Oh, man.
47:53Don't be sorry.
47:54You're OK.
47:59That was quite testing.
48:01I'm here to have an adventure with my brother.
48:04We haven't had much adventure today.
48:06Stressing over five quid and wandering around in the boiling heat is not ideal.
48:11Old Captain Shoestrings has been keeping it tight.
48:17You all right now?
48:20I don't know.
48:21I feel like I let us down.
48:22You didn't let us down.
48:23I'm disappointed just in myself.
48:25You know, like, I think it's more out of fear.
48:27Do you know what I mean?
48:28It's fear that we're going to run out of money and not be able to do this amazing trip.
48:31Yeah.
48:32Like, that's what I worry about.
48:33Well, moving forward, we can change our strategy of not having to panic about the money,
48:39I guess, sometimes, making ourselves upset, you know?
48:44No matter what happens, we're on this adventure together.
48:49If we come last, we come last.
48:51If we run out of money, we run out of money.
48:58All right.
48:59Ready to start again?
49:00Yeah.
49:01I mean, I've never seen a volcano before in my life, so that's pretty amazing.
49:05I mean, this is what it's about, though, really, isn't it?
49:08If I hadn't have been looking for that hotel, I probably would have gone out there by now.
49:21You do know the border opened 18 minutes ago already?
49:23Yeah, but we also need to eat.
49:25I can't be going through a border crossing with no food in my belly.
49:28What's half an hour?
49:29Mates all different to their own.
49:31Every minute counts.
49:32Mmm.
49:35Just eight kilometres from the El Salvador border, Molly and Tyler are now the closest
49:40team to the second checkpoint.
49:4364 minutes later than planned.
49:45We went a little bit overboard on food, this leg.
49:49We can't afford a cab, so we're walking.
49:53The books just need to balance out.
49:55Yeah.
49:56Um, where's the border?
49:58Hola.
49:59Frontera?
50:00Hola.
50:01Yeah.
50:02Gracias.
50:03El tiempo?
50:05Gracias.
50:06Gracias.
50:07See?
50:08A little 40-minute brisk walk in the morning.
50:10I feel like we burn off the pancakes.
50:1490 kilometres behind, Dylan and Jackie.
50:18We're trying to get to Frontera El Puey, border.
50:22Frontera El Puey?
50:23Si.
50:24Yes.
50:25While over in Guatemala...
50:26Oh, what's this coach?
50:27Dad, what is that?
50:28Oh, no.
50:29What's that?
50:30Anita.
50:31Anita and Bal, trying to catch a ride to a western border crossing.
50:37Anita, there's another bus coming down.
50:40Shall we see if I can get on it?
50:42Please, please, please.
50:43Here we go.
50:44Right.
50:45Oh, brilliant.
50:46We've got it, we've got it.
50:47All right, let's go.
50:48With all teams fast approaching El Salvador,
50:53also closing the gap, Roman and Harley Moon.
50:57I would love if we were first.
50:59Honestly, I can't call it Anita and Bal, we're a day ahead.
51:03Yeah, but we have been swift with our moves today.
51:06I just have a good feeling, but I don't want to jinx it yet, because look at the traffic.
51:11I think when we get over the border, we can haggle a cab.
51:15We have only spent $10 today.
51:19It's just, it's just how much they charge us.
51:21The thing is, if the taxi was $50, just get us.
51:26Is this being told to learn from yesterday, when to do it and when to not do it?
51:31Yeah.
51:32Feels like one of those moments.
51:34If we can do taxi, do taxi.
51:35Just do it.
51:36Is that a vulture there?
51:37There are vultures circling us.
51:38We're walking for two hours.
51:39Yeah.
51:40Read it down there, said it was 40 minutes.
51:41This is annoying.
51:42Come on.
51:43Oh, see that sign?
51:44Yeah.
51:45See that sign?
51:46Yeah.
51:47That's our finish line.
51:48Welcome to El Salvador.
51:49El Salvador, hello.
51:50We made it.
51:51Molly and Tyler's lengthy trek to the border.
51:52Woo!

52:15The Pacific coastline.
52:16Has given others a chance to catch up, as all four teams are now in El Salvador.
52:23I'm starting to get butterflies.
52:24I think we've got to be fast.
52:26No, Tyler.
52:27You never know.
52:28They might all have disasters, and we are first.
52:33This feels worth it.
52:34Turn the taxi.
52:35My gut tells me this was the right idea.
52:38We're getting there fast, which is good.
52:40Anything towards Bala and Anita, I'll take right now.
52:42I'll take right now.
52:43We've done good.
52:44Yeah.
52:51Where ocean swells crash into volcanic sands, the sleepy surf town of El Zonte on the Pacific
52:57coast.
52:59Oh, my God.
53:01And the team's second checkpoint.
53:02Let's go.
53:03Here we go.
53:04Got it?
53:05Oh, we've got one.
53:06Right, here we go.
53:07On foot, enter El Zonte via Entrada Dos.
53:08Bearing right to find the footbridge crossing the river.
53:09And find the El Zonte skate park.
53:10How do you feel about running?
53:12How do you feel about running?
53:13No, no, no.
53:14Not yet.
53:15No, no, no.
53:16Let's just do big strides.
53:17Good running.
53:18Keep bearing right to find the footbridge crossing the river.
53:24And find El Zonte skate park.
53:26Perdona, perdona.
53:27Entrada Dos.
53:28How do you feel about running?
53:29No, no, no.
53:30Not yet.
53:31No, no, no.
53:32Let's just do big strides.
53:34Good running.
53:35Keep bearing right to find the footbridge.
53:38So bear right.
53:39So we've entered Entrada Two.
53:41Is it bear right?
53:42Bear right.
53:43Yeah, yeah.
53:44Keep bearing right.
53:45So that way.
53:46That way.
53:47Keep bearing right.
53:48Oh, there.
53:49Footbridge.
53:50There it is.
53:51There it is.
53:52To continue towards skate park.
53:53Yeah.
53:54Pick up some pace on the footbridge.
53:55It's just up here.
53:56Skate park.
53:57Go all the way down.
53:58Take your second right.
54:00Yeah.
54:02You're passing on the left.
54:03Okay.
54:04Thank you so much.
54:05Here we go.
54:06This is it, Dad.
54:07Skate park.
54:08There you go.
54:09A key skate park.
54:10Yeah.
54:11Head west on the beach.
54:14And locate the bird carved into rock.
54:17Your checkpoint hotel awaits you above.
54:20Head west on the beach.
54:23This is it.
54:24I might not wait for waiting for it.
54:25Right.
54:26Right.
54:27I knew the compass would come in handy.
54:28Yeah.
54:29That's west, wherever the sun's set.
54:31And that food smells unbelievable.
54:32Doesn't it?
54:33I'm so hungry now.
54:34A rock.
54:35So west is that way.
54:36Bird carved into the rock.
54:38Come on, Dad.
54:39Let's pick up the pace a bit.
54:41Hey, Donna.
54:42Where is a rock?
54:43Like a bird.
54:50See that bird?
54:51Yeah, there.
54:52That must be our hotel.
54:53Come on, Dad.
54:54There.
54:55I see it.
54:56Where?
54:57You see it?
54:58Oh, yeah.
54:59We've got to get up.
55:00Fucked.
55:01Hola.
55:02Where's the bird carved into the rock?
55:03The hotel should be above this, right?
55:04There's a hotel there.
55:05Let's go for it.
55:06The gate's open.
55:07What the rocks?
55:08Oh, hold on.
55:09Try it there.
55:10Is this it?
55:11Oh, my God!
55:12I see it.
55:13I see it.
55:14I see it.
55:15I see it.
55:16I see it.
55:17I see it.
55:18I see it.
55:19I see it.
55:20I see it.
55:21I see it.
55:22Hola.
55:23Hola.
55:24Welcome to a selfie.
55:25Congratulations.
55:27Oh, my God.
55:28It's so hot.
55:29Well done.
55:30Ah.
55:31Lee sign.
55:32Ah!
55:33Number one.
55:34Number one.
55:35Number one.
55:36Number one.
55:37Number one.
55:38Number one.
55:39Number one.
55:40Number one.
55:41No way.
55:42Whoa.
55:43How's that happened?
55:44Wow.
55:45Yeah.
55:48Ecstatic.
55:49Yeah.
55:50Honestly, ecstatic.
55:51We were not expecting it.
55:52Honestly, that was so hard.
55:54Trying to race across Guatemala and every road being shut down.
55:57Thank you very much.
55:58I think we're a brilliant team.
56:00I'm ready for the next one.
56:05Oh, well done.
56:07Damn, they're still ahead of us.
56:09We made up a lot of time.
56:11We came second.
56:12That's pretty good.
56:13Yeah.
56:14You know what?
56:15We got through a national strike.
56:16We've closed the gap, which feels like a victory.
56:19Biggest challenge of this leg for me definitely was deciding when to be frugal and when to race.
56:26And I think you helped me a lot during this leg.
56:29There's a goat up there.
56:31I think it could be up these stairs.
56:35We made it, babe.
56:37No!
56:38You're joking!
56:39Stop!
56:40Oh, no!
56:41We thought so.
56:42Wait, hold on.
56:43We're four minutes away from them.
56:44Oh my gosh.
56:45We could have caught them.
56:46What the hell?
56:47That's amazing.
56:48It's bittersweet.
56:49Third place again.
56:50I'm going to open my hands up.
56:51I'm going to open my hands up.
56:52I said let's have breakfast.
56:53Yeah.
56:54That could have been the pivotal moment.
56:55Give us a hug.
56:56Yeah, hell yeah.
56:57I'd say that.
56:58Anita and Bal have maintained pole position but their 23 hour lead is now down to three and
57:17a half and just 22 minutes separates the other teams.
57:21We came fourth again but we're looking rude about it because we're so close.
57:28We could literally hold them back as they're trying to leave.
57:30I think what we did right in this leg is we spoke to more people.
57:34You definitely gained confidence in yourself on this second leg I think.
57:38Yeah.
57:44Wow.
57:45We're going to Honduras, baby.
57:47I feel like I'm in Jurassic Park.
57:50Dad, this is so cool.
57:51All right.
57:52In the midst of anxiety we have jumped off the bus.
57:56I feel like death.
57:57We might be ahead of everyone.
57:58Come on.
57:59He just asked us to push the bus.
58:00Was that the most attractive thing you've ever seen me do?
58:01Yeah.
58:02It was pretty fit.
58:03We're going to win the race.
58:04Mustn't give up Dylan.
58:05Yeah.
58:06There's no hotel here.
58:07So now what?
58:08We're going to win the race.
58:09Mustn't give up Dylan.
58:10Yeah.
58:11There's no hotel here.
58:12So now what?
58:13Yeah.
58:14There's no hotel here.
58:15So now what?
58:16Yeah.
58:17Yeah.
