00:00You know, I think it's a losing battle for him, and I think he could have handled it better again.
00:04I spoke with somebody, a former head coach last night, about it and stuff, and they were just like, you know, you can – no coach wants to give injury information out, right?
00:16But you don't have to be combative about it, and picking a fight like that is probably not the way to go.
00:21And if he wanted to make a point, if he was upset with Rich, he probably should have spoken to Rich privately and not made it public like that.
00:28Hello, and welcome to Gangs All Here.
00:30My name is Ryan Sampson.
00:32That's my Jets beat writer, Brian Costello, and that's my guy, Frankie Vitorini, from U Stadium.
00:36Today is Wednesday, November 12th.
00:37We're doing the podcast a little bit early as the Jets have a Thursday night game against the New England Patriots.
00:41First time they're playing the Patriots this year.
00:44Week 11, Jets are 2-7.
00:46They have Frankie and Kaz, a winning streak.
00:49They've won more than one in a row.
00:52I call that a winning streak around here.
00:54Technically.
00:55Yeah, technically.
00:55As the Jets work their way through the rest of this season, we're going to preview this game against the Patriots, talk a little bit about the what if, if Mike Vrabel had been the Jets head coach instead of Aaron Glenn maybe, and we'll discuss, as always, over-unders and picks.
01:11But before I get to any of that, I'll start with Kaz.
01:13How are you doing today on this Wednesday morning, sir?
01:16Ask Rich.
01:19We'll get into that, too.
01:20We'll get into that.
01:21Frankie, how are you doing, bud?
01:23Same thing, man.
01:24Ask Rich.
01:24Rich, I don't need to tell you.
01:25You can figure it out.
01:26Are both of you guys banged up?
01:27Do I need to ask Rich about that, too?
01:30No, you know what?
01:31I'm feeling good, man.
01:32I'm feeling good.
01:32I think tomorrow will be the measuring stick for Aaron Glenn.
01:38This is his biggest challenge yet as the head coach of the Jets, outside of dealing with the media.
01:44This will be Glenn's biggest challenge.
01:45We'll see what he's about and what this team's about, because all the odds are stacked against us.
01:50So we'll see.
01:51Yeah, they started out as 11.5-point dogs.
01:54They're now 12.5.
01:56Oh, one up again.
01:57Latest on FanDuel right now.
01:59And if you guys get a chance, check out Post Sports Plus.
02:02Subscribe.
02:03You should be subscribed already for all the great content from Kaz and all of our other writers.
02:06Kaz put out a cool piece today, this morning, about also the Jets, when they're such huge underdogs like this and what their record is.
02:14It's pretty wild to read back and see.
02:16But look, we'll start here with this game against the Patriots.
02:19I want to ask you, Kaz, because you put it in your Post Sports piece about the what if of Mike Vrabel.
02:26I know that when we were talking about coaching candidates, I was preaching Mike Vrabel's the guy.
02:31That's the guy I would go all in for.
02:33I know they got a chance to interview him before the Patriots even fired Gerard Mayo.
02:37Do you even wonder what if the Patriots had not moved on from Mayo and Vrabel was still that free agent, the Jets were able to secure him with this season that played out differently?
02:49Yeah, I think you have to wonder that because he's doing a pretty great job in New England.
02:53Now, obviously, he's got a quarterback, which which helps.
02:56But he's, you know, he's just impressive, right?
03:00Like you watch him, I see clips of the press conferences and stuff, and he's his messages and messaging, I think, is impressive.
03:08I've talked to some of the writers up there that I know, and they've been impressed.
03:15A lot of them knew him from as a player, but they've been impressed by how he's handled everything.
03:19And you can just tell he's been in the job before.
03:23And we always talk about that, right?
03:24Like the Giants are going through that right now.
03:26Should they hire somebody with experience and what that means?
03:29And, you know, guys can be successful in their first time as a head coach, but you can tell he's just comfortable in the job.
03:36And he's comfortable in his own skin, and I think that shines through.
03:40And, yeah, the Jets had him, you know.
03:42It was the Friday before the Dolphins game last year, which was a little weird because the Jets were out in the field practicing,
03:48and Vrabel was in the building, which rubbed some people the wrong way.
03:51But he was in there, and they had him in.
03:53And, you know, there's Jets people who were convinced he wasn't using them and that he had genuine interest.
04:00But whatever, you know, two days later, the Patriots moved on from Mayo, and it was pretty clear that that's where he was going.
04:05But you talk to people who interacted with him that day, not necessarily even the guys, like, in the interview I'm talking about.
04:11There was a lot of people that interacted, and just they were like, this is what we need.
04:15This is the guy we need.
04:16And they loved him.
04:17But, you know, once the Patriots job opened up, that's where he was going.
04:22Yeah, it always felt like he was destined for that Patriots job, like as soon as you said.
04:27Like, that job came open, it's like, crap.
04:30And that was, like, the what if.
04:32Like, I always, again, I'm going to continue to play in my head is, like, because we'll get to the Aaron Glenn part of this,
04:38but it's just this guy, like you said, has the history.
04:40He has the cachet.
04:41Like, he's been there.
04:42He's a Super Bowl champion as a player.
04:44You know, he's not a Bill Belichick disciple in the coaching world, but in terms of playing under Belichick,
04:51he has that type of discipline, you feel like, on the field and the way he works his locker room.
04:57He's a great game management guy, too, right?
05:00He is, definitely.
05:01His game decisions are just so good.
05:03And, you know, so I'll give you another one.
05:06What if, after 2023, when he got fired by Tennessee, the Jets said, all right, he's available.
05:15I know we said we're keeping Salah, but let's fire Salah.
05:18If we can get Vrabel, let's fire Salah.
05:22Yeah.
05:22Now, the Aaron Rodgers piece was there.
05:24I don't know how Aaron Rodgers would have felt about that, and he had a lot of sway at that point in the organization.
05:28But that's another what if I've thought about, too, because they were committed to Salah, you know, but the Vrabel piece was an interesting wrinkle that he became available.
05:39Yep.
05:39Yep.
05:40Certainly feels like that was – I know it's always revisionist history, but it feels like that was an opportunity, like you said there, Kaz, too, of, like, if they had moved on from Salah that early.
05:48Because you could see Woody Johnson clearly didn't feel great about the head coach.
05:52Five games.
05:52Five games, and that's it.
05:54You know, Frankie, do you make yourself wonder, again, as a Jets fan, like, if the Jets missed out a huge opportunity with Mike Vrabel?
06:02Yeah, man.
06:03I mean, listen, at the time, I wanted an offensive-minded head coach.
06:07I was always stuck on that.
06:09So I wasn't so sad when Vrabel ended up going to the Patriots.
06:14The interesting part about that dynamic is Aaron Glenn actually declined to interview with the Patriots, so I wonder how that –
06:23I think he knew – because he knew Vrabel was getting that job.
06:25Yeah, you don't think it was a Gerard Mayo thing that had to do with that?
06:29No, I think he knew – no, I think he knew Vrabel was getting the job, and, you know, so, yeah, it was pretty –
06:34and if I remember correctly, I think they were scrambling to try to get some Rooney Rule compliance there because everyone knew Vrabel,
06:41and I don't think Aaron Glenn was going to be used for a Rooney Rule interview.
06:45That'd be my projection.
06:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:48No, but, Ryan, I would have loved Vrabel here, man.
06:50I mean, I think the experience variable that Kaz spoke about is everything that this sort of team needs.
06:57I think this team is young.
06:58We're one of the youngest rosters in the NFL, and you see it this season.
07:02Our coach is trying to figure out.
07:04The players are trying to figure things out.
07:07Tanner Engstrand's his first year here.
07:08So, first year calling plays in the NFL.
07:11So, it's – everyone's learning, and I think someone like Mike, if he came here,
07:17he would have brought a level of veteran leadership that this team sort of needs.
07:23And, you know, he was former coach of the year.
07:26He did a lot with that Tennessee roster, by the way.
07:29Let's not forget what he did with Ryan Tannehill.
07:30So, he really gets players to play at – you know, towards their ceiling and really develop while he's there.
07:41You look at what he's doing right now with Drake May.
07:43Drake May is – he's the MVP favorite on a lot of sportsbooks.
07:47So, I mean, he's getting the most out of these guys, and he's done a great job, man.
07:53He has.
07:53Yeah, and he's also, you know, relied on guys like Josh McDaniels, who's obviously been there for a long time in New England.
08:00As the offensive coordinator, you know, has gone off and done other things, but then come back.
08:05So, for the fact that he's kept that nucleus together, and it seems to already be great.
08:09Like, the Patriots, I can't believe we're back in this position, guys.
08:12Like, they look like the dumpster fire of old dumpster fires two years ago when the Jets finally beat them.
08:18But it's like, now all of a sudden, like you said, Kaz, they got their quarterback.
08:21They have their CEO-type head coach.
08:23They have a smart offensive coordinator that's had history of proven success.
08:27And now their defense –
08:29Yeah, they signed good players.
08:30They signed good players.
08:31They went all in on the free agent class, too.
08:33So, it's scary that the Patriots are all of a sudden again – and it looks like the division could be theirs.
08:39I mean, the Bills obviously falling down in Miami.
08:42That's going to hurt those in the long run that the Patriots could be winning.
08:45Yeah.
08:45I mean, I think as we talked about the other day, Ryan, I'm not completely sold with the Patriots in this juggernaut that's going to run off the rest of the season.
08:52But they're good.
08:53They're good.
08:53And I think – one thing about Vrabel – I can't remember who made this point back in the hiring cycle, but I thought it was a good one – is he's basically like he experienced everything as a player.
09:03So, he was a third-round draft pick of the Steelers, right?
09:06And he gets viewed as a disappointment with the Steelers.
09:09So, they move on from him.
09:12The Patriots, he was a cheap signing by the Patriots.
09:14So, he's kind of experienced that world of like you got cut, you weren't – you're viewed as a bust.
09:20Then a team brings you in as a low-level signing.
09:23Then he has success.
09:24He gets a big contract from the Patriots.
09:26So, he's been in that kind of boat.
09:27Then he gets traded to the Chiefs.
09:29So, he's been traded.
09:30Like, he kind of has experienced it all in the NFL, which I thought was an interesting point by somebody.
09:38Yeah.
09:39And you figure that experience helps him.
09:42Just like you figure that experience would help Aaron Glenn as a player here in New York with handling the media.
09:47And this brings me to the Gang Sounds Off, fellas.
09:50I'm going to pass on talking about injuries.
09:56Since Rich, he's not here, has all the answers.
09:59So, you guys can get all the injuries from Rich.
10:01Is Garrett a candidate for IR?
10:06Is that not something you want to –
10:07Ask Rich.
10:08I'm asking you.
10:09Well, I'm telling you to ask Rich.
10:11I'm not here, though.
10:12Well, you better call him.
10:13No disrespect to you or Rich, but, like, we want to hear it from you, you know?
10:17You guys have been hearing it from me.
10:19But now, since we're just reporting stuff, you know, that I haven't said, then maybe you should ask him.
10:25Look, we keep repeating this with Aaron Glenn every week for Gang Sounds Off because he just continues to give us quotes to respond to.
10:34There's something here that I want to present to you, Kaz, before I get your actual reaction to what Glenn had done yesterday.
10:40I see a lot of fans on social media who are like, we love this.
10:46We love this from Aaron Glenn.
10:48Screw the media.
10:49The media has always been worse towards the coaches.
10:51They don't care.
10:53Like, you know, like, this is Glenn setting his trend and how he wants to basically run the media and have it his way and control the information and the flow of it.
11:03So, this was him saying a big FU to the media.
11:05So, I don't understand that part, but I guess I would love to hear your perspective here because I know what you said last week when you said, it gives us something to write about, Ryan.
11:15Like, it makes it interesting.
11:17So, how are you viewing when Aaron Glenn goes into the press room yesterday and says, I'm not discussing injuries with you guys.
11:23Go to Rich Cimini over there who apparently knows everything.
11:25And then you got Garrett Wilson saying, talk to head coach.
11:28I can't tell you how long I'm going to be out either.
11:30What are we doing here?
11:31Yeah, so there's a few different things there.
11:35They did give people something to write about, right?
11:37Everybody wrote it today.
11:38So, my point stands on that.
11:41You know, coaches have always tried to control injury information.
11:45That's not new.
11:46I do think when there's a situation like this, it's a little silly.
11:51Like, I don't think there's anyone on earth who expected Garrett to play Thursday.
11:54So, I'm not sure why you're playing that game.
11:57Like, the guy got hurt.
11:58He re-injured a knee on Sunday.
12:00You have a game on Thursday.
12:01Like, logically, he's not playing.
12:03Whether that's three weeks or four weeks or five weeks or six weeks or two weeks, he's not playing this week.
12:08So, I think he could have come out and said that.
12:10And he sort of lectured us, if you remember, guys, when Justin Fields got hurt in training camp that day with a toe injury.
12:16And it kind of created hysteria.
12:18And he lectured us the next day and said, you know, I'm not going to BS you guys about injuries.
12:23But, like, you guys can't just go running off, like, doing, you know, speculating.
12:29And that day was a lot of speculation.
12:32It wasn't reporting.
12:33Rich did it was reporting.
12:35And I'm pretty sure Rich is going to be proven to be accurate.
12:38And he's probably going to be out three to four weeks.
12:40Rich is not a sloppy reporter.
12:41But the media is an easy target, Ryan, whether it's sports, whether it's politics.
12:46You know, the president has made a career out of attacking the media, right?
12:51And so we're an easy target.
12:52Most people don't like the media when you hear the media as a whole.
12:55So it's easy.
12:57So I understand fans going that route.
12:59But, you know, I think it's a losing battle for him.
13:02And I think he could have handled it better again.
13:05Like, I spoke with somebody, a former head coach last night about it and stuff.
13:10And they were just like, you know, you can – no coach wants to give injury information out.
13:16Right?
13:17But you don't have to be combative about it.
13:19And picking a fight like that is probably not the way to go.
13:22You know, and if he wanted to make a point, if he was upset with Rich,
13:25he probably should have spoken to Rich privately and not made it public like that.
13:29And, you know, but that's how he wants to go.
13:31And, again, if you win games, nobody cares, right?
13:34No one will care how he is in press conferences if he's winning games.
13:38If you're 2-7, it gets a little more dissected.
13:42Yeah.
13:42I mean, look, it's certainly like – I've tried to discuss this with Frankie and others off the record.
13:50Not even off the record, but just like, you know, inside conversations.
13:52And it's this fascination of – I think a lot of these newer coaches are trying to go the Bill Belichick route.
13:59Like you said, don't give any information out.
14:01I'm going to answer the questions my way.
14:03And you guys can keep asking me however many times, but I'm just going to give it my way.
14:07Yeah.
14:07But like you said, it always comes down to Belichick has the ranks.
14:11He has the wins.
14:11He can get away with that crap against the media.
14:14And we just laugh it off because, yeah, he wins.
14:17He does it his way and it works.
14:18But all these unproving commodities that come in a head coach and they try to establish their program like Aaron Glenn, it just comes off as like you're being an arrogant ass.
14:27And that's to me as a fan but also who works in the media too.
14:32And I've worked in the media my whole professional career.
14:34There's a right way and a wrong way to go about it.
14:36And what I see from Aaron Glenn, this is the wrong way to go about it.
14:39I don't care what fans say about, yeah, F the media.
14:43Screw them.
14:44Like they don't know what they're talking about.
14:45They're always against the Jets.
14:46They're always negative.
14:47It's like the Jets do it to themselves.
14:50Who are we kidding?
14:51Like Frankie knows.
14:52And that's where I want to talk to you, Frankie.
14:53Like you know what we're talking about.
14:55They do it to themselves as an organization.
14:58So that's why Kaz and the guys are going to write negative pieces about it because that's what's going on.
15:03Am I wrong here, Frankie?
15:05No, I think you're right.
15:06The question I was going to ask Kaz, though, and I think this brings up I think the most interesting point here overall is Kaz, when you're saying this could bite Aaron Glenn in the behind at some point,
15:17down the line, fans have said that I've said that.
15:19What does that actually mean now?
15:22Like we're saying, we're assuming that at some point when Aaron Glenn does go on even a longer losing streak than maybe he went on the first half of this season, which I hope he doesn't.
15:33But is the media really going to parade on this guy and start writing a few hit pieces here and there?
15:40Like is what he's doing now going to make it more likely or prone for the media?
15:46I'm not saying you specifically, just overall.
15:48This could be, you know, whatever the athletic.
15:50Yeah.
15:51Is this something where he's poking a bear and then sort of waiting for that bear to sort of say, you know what?
15:57I've had enough of you treating us like this.
16:00Yeah, I don't want to speak for the entire media.
16:04Yeah, of course.
16:05Because I don't like when we all get grouped together.
16:08I'll speak for myself.
16:10Like I think what happens is we're human, right?
16:13So I think you lose the benefit of the doubt when you start to do this.
16:17I think if you treat us with respect and you don't like you don't have to be friends with the media like that, I think that's a misconception to like just treat us respectfully.
16:28I think if there's a situation where it's like, is this coaching?
16:34Is it quarterback?
16:35Is it the roster?
16:36Like the coach might get the benefit of the doubt in that situation.
16:40But if you're combative and fighting all the time, you're probably not going to get the benefit of the doubt and you'll get looked at harder.
16:46I don't know if anyone will write hit pieces.
16:50I mean, look, I think the argument for that, Frankie, would be Robert Sala was very friendly with the media and there were some stories written that weren't very nice to Robert Sala toward the end.
17:02So it didn't help him.
17:03I think that's the argument against being friendly with the media.
17:08So, yeah, I just I don't I think it just creates it's an unnecessary thing is what it is to me.
17:16If I was looking at it from like Jets management perspective is like we have enough to deal with with Mike Vrabel and Drake May and then Lamar Jackson next weekend.
17:26You know, we have Josh Allen in the division and our quarterback isn't playing particularly well.
17:32We've scored one touchdown in the first quarter on offense.
17:35Like we've got to figure out who's going to be on this team.
17:37Like there's so many things to worry about.
17:40Let's not add the media to that list and let's actually act like what we say, which is we don't worry about the outside noise.
17:50We cut out all the outside noise.
17:52But then you really don't because you react to everything.
17:55So, like, actually do what you're preaching.
17:59Ignore it.
17:59Ignore it.
18:00Who cares that Rich reported that Garrett's going to be out three to four weeks?
18:04Right.
18:05Like you could come out and say, you know, you know, guys, I know it's out there, but we're still evaluating him.
18:13You know, when we have something to say about Garrett Wilson, we'll say it, but we don't have it right now.
18:19But don't make it like ask Rich, ask Rich.
18:21Like just I think it's creating an unnecessary layer of what you're trying to deal with here as a first time head coach.
18:29And someone texted me yesterday.
18:31I said, like, what's his end game?
18:33And I don't know.
18:35I don't know if there's a plan here in terms of dealing with the media.
18:38So, and again, I want to emphasize this because I see this all the time.
18:42Oh, the beats hurt.
18:43I do not care.
18:45I don't.
18:46Like I, if you heard, if the tape was still playing at the end of the show, I was laughing.
18:50No, yes.
18:51Some guys were, some guys were really upset.
18:53I was cracking up because I found the whole thing so amusing.
18:55And I, like I told her, I told her, all I care about is give me something to write about.
18:59Gave us something to write about.
19:00It was interesting.
19:01So I do not care.
19:03You're asking me about it.
19:04So I'm telling you, I don't care.
19:05And if he wins game, it does not matter.
19:09So.
19:11Well, right.
19:11Let me bring up one.
19:13Just one, one quick thing.
19:14You know what I think's happening with Glenn this week?
19:16I think he knows at what a disadvantage we are going into this game.
19:23I think he's pissed off about the injuries.
19:25I think he's looking at that Patriots team and he's like, I don't know.
19:29I know what we're getting into right now.
19:30And we're getting, you know, we're, we're going after a team that is on a seven game win streak and just ready to run it up on us.
19:38So I think he's a little bit worried, Aaron Glenn.
19:40And he, he didn't seem, he seemed a little bit, he didn't seem so happy the last couple of days.
19:45He didn't, he didn't have that shine of, of, Hey, I just won two games in a row.
19:49So I think he's looking at the disadvantages they're having a little pissed off about him.
19:55He's taking it out on the media.
19:56I thought he was working his ass off too, Frankie.
19:58Like the short week is tough on a coach.
20:00Like he's working his ass off.
20:01I'm doubt he slept very much before that press conference yesterday.
20:05It's a tough turnaround.
20:06Sure.
20:07You're, you're, you're game planning.
20:08So I do think I have noticed he's a lot more relaxed in the press conference situations on Mondays and Fridays.
20:16If you've ever noticed, like, and I feel like that's because on Mondays,
20:20he's coming off the game.
20:22He's, you know, they've made, they're making their corrections.
20:24He's in, he can kind of analyze.
20:27And then on Fridays, the work is mostly done and he's a little more relaxed.
20:32The Wednesday press conferences are the ones and the post-game press conferences,
20:36obviously the ones that tend to be a little more tense.
20:38And so I think it's, I think it's probably, yeah, about just how hard he's working.
20:42I also think, you know, I wonder if it, you tell me guys,
20:49do you think that the Jets PR is kind of like going when they see those, you know,
20:53that happened and it's like, they speak to him like, Hey, Aaron, like, yeah, you know,
21:00you can be a little bit nicer about it.
21:01Like there's no reason to take a shot at rich or, or anyone else here in the room.
21:05I'm like, I don't know.
21:07I don't think Aaron Glenn is interested in PR advice.
21:10Interesting.
21:11I think, I think, I think he's calling his own plays.
21:14One more point.
21:15I just want to make in riches defense, right?
21:17Cause rich takes a lot of crap on social media and rich is a really good reporter.
21:20He's done this for a really long time.
21:21And what rich reported is not gossip.
21:24Like I've seen that.
21:25I'm like, Oh, he's teaching the media not to like make stuff up.
21:28Rich didn't make it up.
21:30And again, I'm pretty sure he's going to be right.
21:32And so you got this from a good source and you know,
21:36so like, this is different than reports about things like that aren't,
21:42you know, injury related, like this are transactional.
21:46Like this isn't like a gossipy thing about what's going on in the locker room or
21:49anything like that.
21:50Um, I understand fans getting annoyed with that stuff, but this, this was,
21:53this is solid reporting and he doesn't deserve grief for it.
21:57I completely agree with you cause I just, uh, what is Aaron Glenn's end game?
22:01No one knows.
22:02Uh, and like you said, if when, if wins happen, it doesn't matter, but guess what?
22:06The jets have only won two games this year and it's completely come crashing
22:10down on him.
22:11So I wonder again, if he's trying to do the guy in the corner,
22:14I'm just going to keep swinging until something comes through and I can finally
22:17break through.
22:18But like Frankie said, also, he's got a, he's got a really tough matchup this
22:22week.
22:22And that's where we're going to transition into the key matchups for this week.
22:25Again, Jets versus Patriots.
22:26Um, there's a, I think there's a couple of interesting things here to focus on, but
22:31I'm interested to hear what both of you guys have to say.
22:33So I'll start with you guys.
22:34What is your key matchup between the jets and Patriots that you're looking forward to
22:37tomorrow night?
22:38Can they stop the run?
22:39Can the jets stop the run?
22:41Um, you know, I saw what Trayvon Henderson did against Tampa was pretty impressive.
22:46Uh, I think that's helped Drake may greatly Ramondre Stevenson.
22:49If I'm not sure if he's going to play, but they, they have a good running game.
22:52And while we're talking injuries, Harrison Phillips had a boot on his foot in the locker
22:58room yesterday.
22:58So I do not think Harrison Phillips is going to play in this game.
23:01I don't know that coach Glenn.
23:03I don't know.
23:03I don't, you know, but I'm speculating that he might not play.
23:07And I think that will hurt the jets greatly, uh, in the run game.
23:11I don't know what's going on.
23:12Linebacker still is Quincy going to be back in there.
23:14I think Kiko is probably at a concussion for Paul now.
23:17So is he in there, but the jets have struggled at times against the run this, this season.
23:21Um, you know, Judkins did have some success last week.
23:24So I'm curious if they can stop the run, I guess the Patriots.
23:28It's a good one.
23:29That's a good one to pay attention to, especially with the Harrison Phillips note there.
23:32And like you said, how are they going to play?
23:34Like Quincy did come in during the game against the Browns and made some plays.
23:37So I wonder if they try and keep that rotation going.
23:40Uh, Frankie, what's your key matchup here for jets Patriots?
23:43Well, if you guys remember coming into the season, I was talking to you all about a player
23:49I really liked.
23:50That's not on the jets session.
23:51The Patriots a tackle member, Mr.
23:53Alligator arms.
23:54Yeah.
23:54Will Campbell.
23:55Yeah.
23:56Alligator arms.
23:57Um, so we'll Campbell, he's had a decent season, um, has given up some sacks, had some penalties,
24:02but overall has played.
24:04Okay.
24:04Um, fourth overall pick, obviously I want to see how the other will our will, will McDonald
24:10does against will Campbell.
24:12I think that matchup super interesting, two very different style of players.
24:17Will Campbell, obviously he's got the alligator arms, more stout, powerful in his base.
24:22Not a big guy, not long at all.
24:24Actually, actually one of the, the, uh, stockier tackles in NFL history at left tackle, um, versus
24:31a very long lean build.
24:33And will McDonald, I want to see how will McDonald's able to take advantage of that matchup.
24:38Is he able to give him that spin move?
24:40Is he going to be able to get leverage on the outside?
24:42You're coming off four sacks, man.
24:44Don't disappear after a four sack game, because a lot of fans, they look at will McDonald and
24:50they go, Oh, look at his numbers at the end of the year.
24:52Then they're going to go point to this game and say, well, that's the anomaly game.
24:55Take that out.
24:56Then he has, you know, seven sacks.
24:58Make sure you at least are productive in this game.
25:02Get a sack and a half or two.
25:03Well, but that's my key matchup.
25:05I think if we're able to get some pressure on Drake may, we love to run man, obviously
25:09where we're, we're top of the league and, and running press man, um, we're going to
25:14have to get to the quarterback with these guys on the outside.
25:17And I want to see how, how the will will matchup looks right there.
25:21That's a good one.
25:21Uh, and I would love to see will have another strong game, uh, again, especially like will
25:25will Campbell.
25:27Um, I think if will can continue to stretch down the second half, he's trying to play for
25:31a new contract here soon.
25:32This is what year three for him, right?
25:33Cause.
25:34So, I mean, or you, yeah, yeah, you're three.
25:37So, I mean, he's right there.
25:38I mean, he's trying to earn his money.
25:40And I think, uh, if he has another strong double digit sack season for him, he's building
25:44that resume up for him and you're hoping that he can develop as well.
25:47Uh, I think my matchup for me guys is going to be ultimately Brees Hall versus Pat Patriots
25:53rush defense.
25:53The Patriots have the best rush defense in the NFL.
25:56They are giving up the least amount of yards to opposing running backs and opposing teams.
26:00Currently, they're averaging 79.2 yards per game given up on the ground.
26:05Uh, and, and that's not, it's not coincidence that Mike Vrabel, since he's taken over this
26:11unit, they've gotten a lot better.
26:13Um, and the jets are going to be predicated.
26:14Like if the quarterbacks continue to struggle, they need to be able to run the ball with Brees
26:18and Brees has to have success.
26:19That one run he had in the second half was insane.
26:23That cause it highlighted on Monday in our show about just two defenders right there in
26:27the hole.
26:27And he just juked the hell out of a crazy run.
26:30Uh, so if Brees can continue this run that he's been on these two weeks against a much
26:34better defense, in fact, the best rush defense, that'd be sick to watch this tomorrow night.
26:39Uh, I do want to go to stump cause he got me twice.
26:43Both times.
26:44He got me some freaking crazy 1960s question now.
26:49No, no, no, no, no.
26:50He's going to go in his bag with this one.
26:53Here we go.
26:53For stump cause cause who owns the record for the most passing yards in a single game for
27:00a Patriots quarterback versus the New York jets.
27:05Most passing yards in a single game.
27:10Hmm.
27:10I'm going to go Mac Jones.
27:12Incorrect.
27:14It was not Mac Jones.
27:15It was Matt castle on November 12th, 2008 jets, 3431 win over the new England Patriots.
27:24And who was the quarterback?
27:26Yeah.
27:26Brett Favre.
27:27That's right.
27:28The story.
27:28Let me tell you the story of that game.
27:30Yeah.
27:31I was, that was before I was on the beat.
27:33Okay.
27:34So I was a general assignment reporter at the post at the time.
27:36I went to St.
27:38Kitt's on vacation and I came back on Wednesday and Thursday morning.
27:45I got a call.
27:46That was a Thursday night game.
27:47I had a call that, uh, Mark.
27:50Canazaro was our beat writer at the time.
27:51Couldn't, couldn't make the game.
27:53Uh, he was dealing with something.
27:55He couldn't get to the game.
27:56Could I get to Foxborough?
27:58Sorry.
27:58I was, I was young, no kids at the time.
28:01So yeah, I drove up to Foxborough and that was one of the toughest games ever to cover
28:07because it was back and forth, back and forth.
28:09And then, uh, yeah, they, the Jets won it in overtime was insane.
28:14Randy Moss caught a touchdown right before the end of regulation, right?
28:17That it was an insane, insane game.
28:20I was thinking the Mac Jones game, Ryan, of, um, when they won 54, what was it?
28:26Sal's first year.
28:26I don't remember.
28:27Sal's first year.
28:28He had 389 yards.
28:30Matt Castle had 400 passing yards against the Jets.
28:33Sorry.
28:34So he said Jones was second.
28:35Jones was second.
28:37Brady's third, believe it or not.
28:38That's crazy.
28:39I, you know, you figured an easy answer.
28:40Well, you knew it wasn't Brady when you asked the question.
28:43Yeah.
28:43So I, yeah, I thought of Castle, but I, yeah, I forgot you did.
28:46So, all right.
28:47That's a good one.
28:48All right.
28:48I got cause.
28:49I finally got him.
28:50Here we go.
28:50And I was, and then they beat the Titans the week after that, the Titans, remember?
28:55And that's the only time I've ever been convinced the Jets were going to the
28:59Superbowl when they beat the Titans.
29:01I'm like, this team is going to the Superbowl there.
29:03They're that like, they are so good.
29:05Beat the Patriots, beat the Titans.
29:08Didn't happen.
29:09Didn't happen.
29:10Cause I've been all downhill since.
29:11No, I'm kidding.
29:12Well, no, 2009.
29:13I know.
29:14I know.
29:14I mean, I didn't even think they were going to the Superbowl then.
29:16I know.
29:17I didn't either.
29:182010, I did.
29:192010.
29:202008.
29:212008 was the best Jets team that I've seen.
29:23Yeah.
29:24Far before he got really, really hurt was on an insane run.
29:28That roster was ridiculous.
29:29Yeah.
29:30And, and yeah, that was the one year without Brady in his prime in 2008.
29:35Yes.
29:35Yeah.
29:36Yeah.
29:36Yeah.
29:36Yeah.
29:36You had the opening without Brady, but, but the Dolphins had a pretty good quarterback,
29:41just like the Jets had an opening before Drake, me and Mike Vrabel.
29:44And now it seems like that's going to run away to that window, but here we go.
29:47So, uh, over-unders and picks, fellas, uh, woof, Frankie, woof, one in five for you.
29:55Damn it.
29:56One in five.
29:57And you know what?
29:57Kaz did great.
29:58Kaz went six and O.
30:00I knew it.
30:01Six and O.
30:02Six and O.
30:03I thought the Judkins one.
30:04Are you serious?
30:05What was the Judkins number, Ryan?
30:07The Judkins number was.
30:0980 and a half.
30:1081 and a half.
30:1181 and a half.
30:12And he went under.
30:12And he went 75, right?
30:14That's correct.
30:15And the first play, he had like 10 yards.
30:17They got called back for holding.
30:18Yeah.
30:18Yeah.
30:19I was thinking of that.
30:20I actually thought of that one during the game.
30:23Kaz, currently.
30:24Wow, six and O.
30:25Six and O.
30:26Now, if you've been following along with Mr. Costello, he is now 35 and 25.
30:31That is up 10 units over the season.
30:33Feeding families, baby.
30:34Feeding families right before Thanksgiving.
30:36All right, fellas.
30:39I'll start off.
30:40They don't have any Jets quarterback props.
30:42Maybe because Aaron Glenn doesn't want to tell us who the starting quarterback is.
30:45Would you be surprised, guys, if Tyrod Taylor comes out and trots out there with the starters?
30:49Would that be shocking to anybody?
30:52I'd be surprised.
30:54I'm not sure why I say shock.
30:55I think we talked about this.
30:57Ryan and I talked about this Monday.
30:58Like, before the short week, I think it's tough.
31:00They didn't have one real practice.
31:02I think it's tough to change their quarterback.
31:04So, yeah, I'd be surprised.
31:06I think it's halftime, Frankie, when the Jets are negative 12 passing yards again before halftime.
31:11And they're going to go to Tyrod, hopefully.
31:14But, you know, Aaron Glenn's stubborn.
31:16It's his way.
31:16He wants to do it his way.
31:17Guys, Drake May, 241 passing yards.
31:20Kaz.
31:22What was that number?
31:23241 and a half pass yards.
31:27That's a big number.
31:29That's a big number.
31:30Under.
31:30Okay.
31:31Frankie.
31:32He's also on, like, an MVP track, Drake May, right now.
31:34He's playing unreal.
31:35Frankie, 241 and a half pass yards for Drake May.
31:38I'm going to, guys, with those injuries on the outside there, I'm going to have to go over there.
31:43Okay.
31:44Drake May, one and a half passing touchdowns.
31:46Kaz.
31:47Over.
31:48Yep.
31:49Frankie.
31:50Over.
31:51Got it.
31:52All right, let's go to the Patriots receivers.
31:54Stefan Diggs, 54 and a half receiving yards.
31:58Kaz.
32:01Over.
32:03Frankie.
32:05I'm going to go under.
32:08Under.
32:09Joey Judy had a great week last week, of course.
32:12And, you know, Stevens, I think, has played well.
32:15Brownlee did not play well last week.
32:17He had a rough day.
32:18Not on the outside, yeah.
32:19Yeah.
32:21Yeah, it's not where he should be playing.
32:22He almost had the interception.
32:24He did.
32:24Hit him in the face.
32:26Yeah.
32:26Let's go to some Jet players.
32:28Very few props here, but they do have Mason Taylor, 32 and a half receiving yards.
32:34Kaz.
32:34Oh, man, that's a tough one.
32:37Like, he, I don't understand his usage at all last week.
32:41Since.
32:42I'll go over on that.
32:44I think they're going to force the ball to him.
32:45Okay, Frankie.
32:47I'm going to agree with Kaz there.
32:48I'm going to go over.
32:49All right.
32:50Brees Hall.
32:51They got this as a 15 and a half receiving yards.
32:55Kaz.
32:5615 and a half.
32:57Receiving yards.
32:58Over.
33:01Vegas knows something.
33:02They know they want to try to get the ball to Brees in the passing game.
33:06Frankie.
33:06I'm going to go over, too.
33:08I love those props with Brees because I'm thinking to myself, he could take any pass.
33:13Correct.
33:13For over 15 yards.
33:15He had one catch last week.
33:16One catch.
33:17Yeah, the only first down of the game.
33:18Kaz passing.
33:19It's the only reason they didn't finish with 12 passing yards or whatever the hell it was.
33:23Brees Hall, finally, 58 and a half rush yards.
33:27Kaz.
33:28Oh, that's kind of low.
33:31The Patriots finally gave up.
33:32I know.
33:33Patriots are great against Iran.
33:3658.
33:38I'm going to go under.
33:41Frankie.
33:42All right, guys.
33:43You know, I'm a big advocate of PFF's next gen stats.
33:47You know where they have the Patriots rush defense?
33:50Actually, I can't believe this.
33:51This is the biggest difference I've ever seen.
33:53They're ranked 20th against the run.
33:55The Patriots, which I don't get where they're getting that number.
33:59I'm going to follow my PFF guys over there.
34:01I'm going to go over with this one.
34:03I think that rush defense is very overrated.
34:05It's going to throw that out.
34:07Well, I will say they gave up the first running back.
34:09Got over 50 yards rushing in a game.
34:11That was Sean Tucker last week against the Buccaneers.
34:13The Patriots did give that up.
34:15So we'll see if the Brees Hall can can just get over 58 and a half.
34:19All right, fellas.
34:22I just think the Jets are going to be behind.
34:24Yeah.
34:26I think they're going to be throwing.
34:27The whole second half is going to be passing with Tyrod.
34:30With Tyrod.
34:30I agree.
34:32Let's do some predictions.
34:33Let's pick this game.
34:33I'll start off with Frankie.
34:35You and Kaz were both right.
34:37I was wrong.
34:37But I'll start with you, Frankie.
34:39Your predictions for this game.
34:40Jets are 12 and a half point dogs against Patriots.
34:42Hey, guys and gals and everyone out there.
34:47This is going to be a rough one.
34:49This is, I think, going to be all falls down kind of game.
34:53I have nothing I can look at unless we get lucky, again, with two special teams touchdowns.
35:00Or we get an interception.
35:03By the way, Drake Mays has thrown an interception in three consecutive games.
35:07So we'll see if we're going to, you know, continue that streak.
35:11We haven't had a pick all year.
35:13So unless something like that happens, where like what Kaz just said, if we're able to not get behind so far and you're able to put together a little bit of a lead or at least keep it close, you could utilize guys like Brees.
35:25But this is this is mission impossible to me.
35:29This is going to be Aaron Glenn's biggest challenge.
35:32And the way he's been acting the last couple of days doesn't give me any confidence in himself.
35:39He seems like unsure of himself.
35:41He's he's been uneasy.
35:42He's pissy.
35:43I think he's been looking at that tape and looking at those injuries.
35:46I think they're going to wipe the floor with us.
35:49I think this is going to be the game.
35:50This is going to be a dog walk kind of game.
35:52They're going to dog walk us to hear the score.
35:55Right.
35:55If I swear to God, if he turns around and says 2417, I'm slamming the microphone down.
36:01All right.
36:01He's he's building this up.
36:03So this better be some score here.
36:05Yeah, guys score 34, seven.
36:09It's going to be a little molly whopping there.
36:11I think.
36:12Listen, you know what?
36:14By the way, if anyone at the Jets is listening, do you want to know how you can win this game really quick?
36:19I'll give you a simple formula.
36:21Do not run man coverage.
36:22Steve Wilts don't run press man completely flip the script.
36:25Run some exotic zone.
36:27Go and look at what Belichick used to run or whatever.
36:30Like take some game script from a defensive coordinator, completely flip it.
36:34Then Drake may might get confused out there.
36:36If they come out and run this little press man thing all game with their crossers, they're going to eat us alive.
36:41And I think Wilks is just going to go like the old dog.
36:44You can't teach him new tricks kind of thing.
36:47So I haven't seen the Jets being able to stop a crossing route since Jerry Judy dropped the ball that hit him right in the hand.
36:52I don't know if they're going to be able to stop the cross.
36:54I'm misdirection.
36:55Right.
36:56All the time, man.
36:57Guys, what's your prediction for this one?
36:59It's hard to follow that, Frankie.
37:02I feel like under the optimist here.
37:04I don't think the Jets are going to win this game.
37:08I don't see a route for them to win.
37:10I think I picked them the last four games, right?
37:13I got two of them right.
37:14But, yeah, I'm picking the Patriots in this one.
37:17It's just I think it's a bad matchup.
37:19I think what Frankie's saying is, like, if you want to try to throw a curveball here, tough to do that in a short week.
37:24They did not have one real practice.
37:26They had a walk-through Monday, walk-through Tuesday, walk-through Wednesday.
37:29So hard to flip the script on what you do in that kind of scenario.
37:35And I think the injuries are bad, right?
37:37I think that there's a lot of injuries.
37:39I think A.Z. Thomas being out.
37:41Brownlee did not look comfortable on the outside.
37:43You know, Harrison Phillips, like I mentioned, I don't think he's going to play.
37:49Obviously, Garrett being down.
37:52You know, can A.D. Mitchell get on the field this week?
37:56Maybe, but I don't know what you expect from him.
37:59So, Patriots are red hot.
38:01I'll go Patriots 30, Jets 14.
38:0430, 14.
38:06Okay.
38:08All right, fellas.
38:09I'll make this short and sweet.
38:10Patriots are going to blow out the Jets on Thursday Night Football.
38:14It'll be 42-3.
38:18Wow.
38:19Wait, 40?
38:19Wait, wait.
38:2043 or 40?
38:2142 or 40?
38:2240, 40, 20, 20.
38:25Okay.
38:26Yeah.
38:26Oh, wow.
38:27That's a rough night.
38:28I think Aaron Glenn's going to be stubborn as hell and keep Justin Fields and make him look as miserable as possible on that field tomorrow night.
38:34And he won't go to Tyrod.
38:36I mean, he bested me as Carolina.
38:38Yeah, he did.
38:39Yeah, I know.
38:40And he's not announcing him the starter, too, right?
38:41Maybe he's thinking about putting in Tyrod, you know?
38:45I don't think.
38:46The only way he's putting Tyrod in is, like Kaz said, if it's a halftime thing.
38:49And, like, they got negative 10 passing yards again, and they're doing literally.
38:52That wouldn't happen, would it?
38:55I mean, we all see it, fellas.
38:57We all see it.
38:58All right.
38:59That's a show, guys.
39:00Kaz, enjoy Foxboro tomorrow night.
39:02Stay warm, and hopefully it's not too bad of a game for you tomorrow night.
39:07And we appreciate you, as always, for hopping on with us, and we're looking forward to your coverage.
39:11Frank, you'll be doing the post-game live show here on the New York Post Sports YouTube channel.
39:14Check that out.
39:16And until next time, go Jets.
39:18Thanks, guys.
