Two boys duck into a movie theatre to escape a cop, and find themselves in the pre-war Army. This is a Lux Radio Theatre debut for Abbott and Costello. It is a story of life in an army camp, some highly imaginary army camp, for a tent flap opens and Abbott and Costello blow in with a draught! But of course any similarity between this play and life in the armed forces is purely coincidently. Stars, Bud Abbott as Smitty and Lou Costello as Herbie, with Benny Rubin as sergeant Collins, Lynne Carver as Judy and Jean O’Donnell as Bob.

00:30Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen.
00:36To a producer, one of the most gratifying sounds in the theater
00:39is what may be classified academically as the ventral rysis.
00:44But backstage we have a slang name for it that I'll call the tummy laugh.
00:49Past masters at producing this phenomenon are tonight's stars,
00:54Bud Abbott and Lou Costello,
00:56who hit Hollywood with the force of a hurricane less than a year ago.
01:00The picture that put them over was Buck Privates,
01:03which Universal made in the ordinary course of the studio schedule.
01:06Suddenly one day, everybody on the lot from office boy to president
01:10woke up to the fact that gold had been discovered in Universal City.
01:15Buck Privates had panned out as a bonanza.
01:17And that's the play we've picked for Abbott and Costello's debut in the Lux Radio Theater.
01:21It's a story of life in an army camp,
01:25some highly imaginary army camp,
01:27where a tent flap opens and Abbott and Costello blow in with the draft.
01:32But of course, any similarity between this play
01:35and life in the armed forces of the Republic is purely coincidental.
01:41Hiding behind the curtain now are Abbott and Costello,
01:43so we'll raise it for the first act of Buck Privates,
