00:00They're just coming apart. You can see how many times, how many shows have been played in these.
00:03It has to be breathable and flexible.
00:05When I married her, I knew fully well I was also marrying a personal stylist.
00:30Hey, how you doing? I'm Matty from The Head & The Hearts and we're here to talk to you about one of my favorite subjects, stage fashion.
00:44So, we're here currently in the summer of 2025 in support of our most recent record that came out a couple months ago called Aperture,
00:54which is in many ways a return to the roots for the band and a way of approaching songs in a fresh way that just feels like these songs have always existed.
01:08There's a unique kind of blending of things that we've learned along the way and also knowing what our lane is
01:20and knowing how to become the best at this particular version of songwriting that we love to do.
01:27So, it's been really great. We've been touring all over the place and everyone seems to be enjoying the new songs and singing along to these songs
01:35and they're very meaningful for us and so it's been really nice.
01:38So, a couple years ago we had the luxury of being in a band that was capable of bringing along wardrobe cases, which, you know, we used to just cram everything into a backpack as you have to
01:54because you're rolling them down the highway and there's not room for a lot of stuff.
01:57So, many of us and some of us, I'm sure, as we've spoken to Kenny, he wears the same t-shirt every day, which is a great approach.
02:04It means packing is easier, but also you have the option like we do in this situation.
02:12It's no secret that Charity and myself are married, so her and I share a wardrobe case and 99% of the stuff in here is actually Charity.
02:20So, you might think that I have some kind of elaborate costuming and in some senses I do and most of it comes from Charity as well
02:28because when I married her I knew fully well I was also marrying a personal stylist.
02:34And so, many of the things I would have never purchased for myself.
02:38I have a head-to-toe snakeskin jacket and pants.
02:43It's not real snakeskin, of course.
02:46Kenny always jokes whenever I wear one of these items that, like, I'm a snake killer, which I'm not.
02:53But anyway, so I would have never purchased that if it weren't for Charity Rose.
02:57I was stealing as well.
02:59Same thing goes for this beautiful, lovely pink jacket, which I have worn on occasion.
03:03But what I've found is that when we're summer touring, I wear, it has to be breathable and flexible
03:09because I'm moving around on the stage all the time.
03:12And so, one of the most breathable things that I wear are these pants.
03:18These are actually probably the most expensive thing we have in here.
03:22But they're also like the most workable and durable articles of clothing that I have.
03:28And I wear them all the time on stage.
03:29They're Issei Miyake pants.
03:31And it's basically like wearing no pants at all.
03:35And so, when I'm playing, it gives me the ability to, like, run around on stage and kick my legs
03:41and do all this stuff that, you know, you get caught up doing in the moment when you're playing songs that you love
03:46and that you're feeding off the energy of the audience and stuff.
03:50So, I, again, these summer shows, it's like minimal clothing.
03:56There's one over here that I have in this bag.
03:58I always got a day bag of things.
04:01That, like, if you've been to the shows a couple of times, you've probably seen me wear this thing.
04:06I don't even know what you call this, but my brother and my sister-in-law brought this back for me
04:11when they went on a trip to Mexico.
04:13And, again, it doesn't mean it looks like a blouse or something.
04:17I think every time I've worn it around my friends, they're like,
04:19oh, are you wearing a blouse today?
04:20And I'm like, well, I guess I am.
04:22But it's like a, I don't even know what you call this, but it's extremely breathable
04:28and it just fits the, it fits that requirement for me to, like,
04:33just feel almost as if I'm not wearing anything and I can just move on stage.
04:37It's really awesome.
04:38So, anyways, if anybody's watching this and knows what this thing is or what it's called,
04:42let me know because I could use a few more of them.
04:45So, we're talking about if we're not performing on stage in a blistering heat,
04:50which we usually are in the summer.
04:52We're playing in theater or something like this,
04:54some sort of indoor clothing or indoor environment.
04:58I have, like, one of my favorite things is another one that Charity got for me.
05:01It's this, it's just an Army-Navy surplus, like, jacket.
05:05But it was outfitted by this amazing designer named Christian Joy
05:11who, like, created this beautiful, like, iron-on bananas and, you know, just sparkly abstract patches
05:19and just kind of, like, makes this jacket have its own unique flair.
05:23And it just, like many vintage, like, military articles of clothing, it fits really flatteringly.
05:29And I, like, so I'll put a, I just love the fit of it and it just feels cool.
05:32So, I wear this one all the time, too.
05:34But, yeah, this is Christian Joy.
05:39Charity has hit me up to Christian Joy.
05:41Like, apparently, Carrie and Owe from the Yeah Yeah Yes gets a lot of stuff from them.
05:47So, but, yeah, this is a cool jacket.
05:50Similarly, I still keep, like, very breathable pants during the show no matter what season it is
05:58because you gotta have that.
06:02I have these, I have some nice little boots that I like to wear
06:07that are just, like, zip-on, easy, free-flowing.
06:10These ones are newer version of ones that I had before that I actually had that I love so much
06:15that they're just, they're buried in here.
06:18But they're just coming apart.
06:19You can see how many times, how many shows have been played in these, in these boots.
06:23And there's no traction in them at all.
06:25And, like, it's almost painful, well, it became painful to wear them anymore
06:28because, like, there's just no padding whatsoever.
06:31But they're perfect for stage because I like to slide around a little bit.
06:37And, like, the less friction you have on that, like, the better, the more flowing you are on stage.
06:42Yeah, these are by Ophacene Creative.
06:44So, again, I learned all this shit from charity.
06:48Same thing with these.
06:50Kenny has a pair of these, too.
06:51These are, like, kung fu shoes, which, like, on certain days, I don't even know how you say the name of this brand.
06:57And these ones are disgusting.
06:58Like, if I wear them and I activate the sweat, they're so terrible.
07:02But on stage, they are similarly, like, just, you can fly in them.
07:07There's, like, so much bend in them.
07:11So, like, it's basically like wearing no shoes at all.
07:14And I love these things for that same reason.
07:16So that's a good, like, indoor thing.
07:20Charity can show you these.
07:21She'll tell you the story of these.
07:22I'm not going to go into it.
07:23But she might not, actually, because she just received these.
07:26But these were given to her by Grace Potter, which is really cool.
07:29And so we keep these in the thing.
07:30If I could fit them, I'd definitely wear them.
07:32But our four-year-old daughter loves to slip these on and play dress-up in the green room when we're, you know, when we're hanging around.
07:40Daytime fashion versus stage fashion, for me, I've tried to make the transition as minuscule as possible.
07:47Like, so during the day, I'm wearing breathable linen pants that are just, like, drawstring,
07:54which is basically, like, a cheaper version of what I wear when I'm on stage.
07:58Like, and it just flows.
08:00It's easy.
08:01And that way, like, when I'm getting, going to and from stage, I'm not, like, I'm not thinking about it very much.
08:07I'm kind of, like, Steve Jobs-ing it.
08:09You know, it's like, okay, well, I'm wearing a black tank top or some version of that concept.
08:15And, like, that way every day when I get up in the morning, I'm not, like, hmm, what am I going to wear today?
08:20Like, I don't, like, I have a certain, like, a certain thing that I like.
08:25And it's taken me a long time to discover it.
08:28And then once you do, you're like, oh, okay, now I just, I have these, this, like, certain handful of things.
08:34And I think going forward is going to make it even easier for me to pack because I'm realizing, oh, God.
08:39I go on tour, I pack all this stuff, and then I only wear, like, three or four things the whole time.
08:44So it becomes pretty straightforward.
08:46Yeah, these, these shoes, um, so these are called Flofers.
08:51And, again, I have a personal stylist by the name of Charity Rose Thielen.
08:55And, uh, she discovered these.
08:57These are basically just, like, the perfect tour shoe because I just live in them.
09:03Uh, uh, they, like, they're waterproof, which I, which is perfect for me because I love to tromp around in the water if we get to, if we have to, if we happen to have a show that's near,
09:15if we have to have a show that's near a body of water, whether it be a river or a lake or whatever, or the ocean,
09:21they're, like, you can take them to the beach, but they, you can also wear them to a nice restaurant because they're, like,
09:26they're just innocuous enough that, like, they kind of unfit anything you're wearing.
09:30And then you don't have to put on socks or worry about tying your shoes.
09:34You just, so when you're going in and out of a venue, you know, after, in the middle of the night,
09:40you can slip them on and, uh, and, you know, walk to, to the bus to go to bed or whatever.
09:45Or sometimes you're crossing the border in the middle of the night.
09:48You don't want to fuss with your shoes.
09:50So, boom, there they are.
09:51It's just ready to go.
09:52Of course, that's a summer thing.
09:53Uh, because it's just, it's tis the season, you know, but keeping with the, um, the breathability,
10:00I have this shirt, which is, um, neat supply, and just a nice little flowy silk shirt.
10:09I'll wear this sometimes.
10:10Same, same reason.
10:11Really, all of it is, like, for the purposes of being, like, free and flowy.
10:15Um, I like this jacket a lot.
10:17Like, again, I don't really wear it unless it's an indoor show or, you know,
10:21I might wear a jacket for the first couple songs and then take it off when I start to get sweaty.
10:26Then you try to, like, avoid it looking like you're trying to do some strip tease, you know what I mean?
10:30So, try to be less flashy about it.
10:32But, but, uh, but yeah, when you have a great jacket, why not wear it?
10:36Um, let's see, what else?
10:38Yeah, there's a few different kind of pairs of those kind of things.
10:42And a lot of this stuff is Charity's and she'll go into it.
10:44She's, uh, she's the fashion guru for sure.
10:47Um, yeah.
10:49I think I wore this show on the, or this, this jacket on the Today Show.
10:53And this was technically Charity's jacket, but I just, and she, she loves to buy, like, oversized jackets and stuff like that.
10:58So, it, like, fit me perfectly.
11:00So, I was like, I'm wearing this on, I'm wearing this today on our television performance instead of you.
11:04Okay, Charity?
11:05So, that's, uh, that's the benefit of having a wife who's very, very dialed in and very tuned into this thing.
11:11Um, and being in a band, you get, it gives you the, uh, the license to kind of not really care that much about what people are thinking.
11:18Or, like, maybe wear something that you wouldn't necessarily, I would, my younger version of myself would not have been comfortable wearing.
11:24But now I'm like, I just don't care anymore.
11:26Which feels good.
11:27It's very liberating.
11:29Well, this has been a joy for me.
11:31Uh, thanks for coming along and perusing, uh, this fashion warehouse we have set up for ourselves.
11:37Uh, my name is Matty and, uh, it's been a pleasure.
11:40Um, thank you for listening to the new record too.
11:42Uh, it came out back in May.
11:44It's called Aperture and if you haven't listened to it yet, please do so.
11:47Uh, it's one of our favorites that we've ever released so far and, uh, and it would mean the world.
11:53Thank you very much.
