00:37We are playing in Chicago tonight, and I'm here to show you some of the gear I'll be using.
00:43This is the bass I use.
00:44It's a Fender Jazz Player 2 bass.
00:47This is a pretty new series from Fender.
00:49It's like a lower cost version of the jazz bass, but it's very well built, very good bass.
00:54This one is actually pretty new.
00:55I just got it a couple months ago.
00:58It still has the same strings it came with.
01:01Don't know what they are, but I don't like touring with new strings on the bass.
01:07I think bass needs to have a little bit of the darkness and punch that older strings get,
01:12so that's the way we're doing it.
01:15As far as settings go on the bass, I keep everything open.
01:18With this band, I want to keep the bottom and the bite, and I get most of my tone control
01:23from just plucking different parts of the string, particularly with these longer necks.
01:28You have a lot of leeway to control the tone that way.
01:33Standard tuning, so nothing too fancy there, and that's basically it for the bass.
01:40So, I often don't tour with pedals, actually, except for my trusty tuning pedal, the Polytune
01:472.
01:47I really like it just because it's so small, lightweight, and it's very accurate and reliable
01:53in my experience.
01:55This tour, I've been touring with the RAT.
01:58I use it for one song.
02:00I wanted the real thing.
02:03Just a little bit of light distortion.
02:05It really cuts through.
02:07It's much more aggressive, much more post-punk.
02:12I love that RAT.
02:13I use it with my guitar as well.
02:15The tremolo is a little bit of a weird thing to have on the board for bass.

02:23it by accident instead of my boss chorus pedal, but it's actually been fun because occasionally
02:29we'll have open, sort of more atmospheric moments in the set, and it can be a good opportunity
02:37to kick that thing on and get some interesting textures going.
02:41So for an amp, I'm using the Rumble 500, also from Fender.
02:46It is probably by far the lightest bass amp I've ever had, and it's really easy to tour
02:54with and to travel with.
02:55It sounds fantastic.
02:57It's a really, really good sounding bass amp, so a lot of bang for your buck.
03:01I tend to not use the drive settings.
03:04I prefer the RAT.
03:06It's got a little more character in my opinion, but I love the vintage setting, which basically
03:11it's, I'm not exactly sure what they're doing, but it's like a combination of compression
03:15and I think boost in the high mids.
03:19I love vintage bass sounds like Ampeg SVTs, that kind of thing.
03:24So it gets a little bit of that into it.
03:27And then I'll tend to push the gain a little bit and keep the master low so that there's
03:30some natural compression happening.
03:34Aside from that, just cut the low mids and boost the high mids, get that kind of Fugazi
03:40post-bunk bass sound and you're good to go.
03:42As far as picks go, like my lovely bandmate Sean, I'm actually using the Dunlop 1mm, also
03:49a great pick.
03:50When I play guitar, unlike Sean, I tend to use slightly lighter picks even for lead, but
03:55for bass this is perfect.
03:56It's not too heavy where it snaps the string.
04:00But it's heavy enough that it's got oomph, punch, it gives you that bottom, that aggressive
04:04tone.
04:05So, love these picks.
