00:00I also tend to wear shirts out until they're falling off my back.
00:03Philippe's the original French dip sandwich.
00:05This was a bracelet that was given to us this tour by some of our kind of super fans
00:10have started this crew called the Blue Crew.
00:30Hi, my name is Kenny.
00:41I am in That and the Heart.
00:43Yeah, we are right now in the middle of the Aperture tour promoting our new record Aperture,
00:49which came out in May a few months ago.
00:51It's been a blast.
00:53We've been playing shows all around the country in Canada and we're about a month into a five
00:58week run right now here in beautiful Chicago and couldn't be happier to be here tonight.
01:03Yeah, so fashion on tour.
01:06I've always been a very simple person.
01:11I'm very much a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy and have been since I was a kid.
01:16I also tend to wear shirts out until they're falling off my back.
01:20My dad was the same way.
01:21I got it from him.
01:23My mother and my sister make fun of both of us and have always done so.
01:27Yeah, so I don't think too much about it.
01:30I just bring on the road.
01:31I grab about seven of my favorite t-shirts and four or five pairs of pants, a pair of swimming
01:37trunks and a bunch of socks and underwear and I'm good to go.
01:40There's not much of a buying process.
01:41I, first of all, wear a lot of our merch because those shirts are free and they're comfortable
01:46and I like the design of them.
01:47And then I figure, free publicity, why not?
01:49You know, so I do wear a lot of our merch on tour and at home.
01:54This shirt I'm wearing here was the handout at a Laker game.
01:59I'm born and raised in Los Angeles and so this is also free, but I'm born and raised in
02:04L.A. and a lifelong Laker fan and went to a game five or six years ago and it was Red
02:08Hot Chili Peppers Night.
02:09And Flea played the National Anthem on bass.
02:11It was great.
02:13And like I said, I wear shirts until they're falling off me.
02:16So it's like slowly getting there.
02:17I love the feeling of a good warning shirt and so I'll wear it until it's literally falling
02:23off my back.
02:24I do have two of these because I went with my girlfriend and they gave us two and she doesn't
02:30like it.
02:31And so people think I wear this shirt all the time, but I'm really swapping between two
02:33different ones.
02:34But yeah, here's my Laker Chili Pepper shirt that I wear quite a bit.
02:39I'll pull out a couple others.
02:40Here, like I said, is one of our merch tees that I like and wear very often.
02:46This is from 2023, so not too old, but I do.
02:51I mean, I like collecting our merch anyways.
02:53I have boxes in my basement at home of one of every item we've ever produced, you know,
02:58give or take a couple that I missed along the way, but the handful that I really dig the
03:01designs of I proudly wear as often as I feel I need to.
03:07Here's another tea that reps my hometown of Los Angeles, Philippe's the Original French
03:14Dip Sandwich.
03:15This is a staple of L.A., been around since 1908.
03:19There are two places in L.A. that claim to have invented the French dip.
03:22Philippe's is one of them.
03:23The others is Kohl's.
03:24I've always preferred Philippe's and I believe their story.
03:27And growing up as a kid on the way to Laker games and Dodger games, my dad and I would
03:30always stop here and eat French dips and I still go every month or two at home.
03:34And so I like repping the local legendary Philippe's home of the original French Dip Sandwich.
03:41It depends on the shirt.
03:42I've had some that have lasted me years, but that's a lot of wears.
03:47I had for a while, I had this shirt by the band Warrant, which is like an 80s hair metal
03:52band.
03:53I think they did that song Sweet Cherry Pie, which I'm not like a diehard fan, but I do think
03:57the 80s hair metal bands are cool.
03:59And I found that at a thrift store on tour in Indianapolis back in like 2011.
04:03And I wore that thing until it was almost embarrassingly like shredded and falling off of me.
04:08But it's really just about the feel.
04:10Like I don't even care about the look too much as far as like the tattered look.
04:14I just love the feel of a really thin worn T-shirt.
04:17And so if I have the option before a tour, I'm obviously going to grab the five or six
04:22that are already kind of at that state.
04:24But yeah, I tend to wear like the same shirt for a few shows in a row.
04:28And then once it gets to the point where I need to throw it in the dirty clothes bag,
04:31it goes there.
04:32And I just try to do laundry on the road.
04:33So I don't pack for more than a week, even if we're on a two week or two month tour.
04:37Yeah.
04:38I mean, these are Levi's.
04:39I found these at a thrift shop in LA and I love green and it's hard to find green pants.
04:45And so anytime I do see a green pair of denim or slacks or whatever and they fit well,
04:50I tend to pick them up because I just like anything dark green.
04:54So these were just a random find.
04:56I guess other pants.
04:57I mean, I do like Levi's a lot, just like blue jeans.
05:00I found a handful of years ago, we did like a little partnership with Lululemon and met
05:06some of the folks that kind of are high up at the company.
05:08They're really sweet to us and they gifted us a ton of stuff.
05:12And I found that they're, I don't know the name of them, but they're like ABC stretchy
05:16just pants.
05:18They're like very breathable and stretchy.
05:20You can kind of wear them to like a nice dinner if you need to, you can wear them out like working
05:25out.
05:26You can, it's just day to day pants.
05:27I love those.
05:29They also have a policy where if you bring them in, you can get a new pair without having
05:32a receipt or needing one.
05:34So I've literally had the same like four pair and I've just recycled them for the last
05:37handful of years.
05:38I'm pretty like budget conscious, you know, I like saving my money and I don't really
05:43care to like spend a ton on clothes.
05:44So thrift stores, merch, free handouts, most of my closet, I'd say 90% of my closet is in
05:53those categories.
05:54Shoes.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Again, not very picky.
05:57These Reeboks, like kind of classic old style Reeboks, I have loved for years now and it's
06:04almost embarrassing if you saw my closet at home, I have like nine pairs of these.
06:09They always come out with like slightly different colorways, just the bottom, these are the brown.
06:13Anytime I see a new color, I pick them up.
06:15These ones have obviously been worn for a while or not super clean right now, but we're a month
06:20long into a tour and I wear them every day.
06:23But yeah, these Reeboks I've been wearing pretty nonstop.
06:26I wear a lot of like Birkenstocks when I'm just trying to be comfy on the bus or around the
06:30venues and whatnot, but yeah, and then running shoes I have on the road.
06:34So yeah, so these, my Birks, and my running shoes.
06:37I have a pair of Reebok pumps that were like a gifted thing years ago that actually have
06:41the little pump button on the side.
06:43I don't use that, but they're super comfy and right now, pretty gross.
06:48Yeah, yeah, I mean Apple Watch, I don't necessarily think it's the coolest thing ever, but I use
06:53it for runs and whatnot and I'm a numbers person, I like keeping track of my steps and like
06:58especially on the road, I just have kind of goals I try to hit and this makes that a lot
07:01easier, but I do take it off for the shows.
07:04It's also, I've found if you're playing the piano and wearing an Apple Watch, it counts
07:08a lot of the playing as steps and so I feel like I'm cheating.
07:11If I play a whole show, it'll count it as like 12,000 steps and that's just a lie.
07:16So I take it off for that.
07:18This was a bracelet that was given to us this tour by some of our kind of super fans have
07:24started this crew called the Blue Crew based off our last record.
07:28Every Shade of Blue and some of them have been to upwards of 50 shows in the last couple
07:33of years and they're always front and center.
07:35They always wear blue lights and give out these blue crew stickers and so they gave me one
07:39of these recently and I've just been wearing it.
07:42This was another, we get a lot of friendship bracelets given to us and this one, I'm not
07:46even sure who gave it to me.
07:49We just had a bunch of them waiting on the bus for us, but I thought it was just pretty
07:52wild, you saved my life and thought that was very sweet and a good reminder of the power
07:59of music and the power of what we do.
08:01It's more than just a job and a hobby and an art for us, it spreads and I try as often
08:09as I can to remind myself of that.
08:11So having it right on my wrist is a really nice mental check in every time I look at my
08:15hands, which is every night when I'm playing.
08:17So these are our wardrobe cases, we each have one, we've had these for years.
08:23Up until this tour, mine has remained empty.
08:26I've never used it once.
08:29I've actually kind of just over the years let Maddie or Charity or whoever needs it take
08:34up mine if they have extra things they'd like to bring out.
08:38But this tour, for the very first time, I decided to fly with a few essentials that I
08:42just figured I'd keep on the road that I might not, I haven't even used this tour but things
08:47like a rain jacket, an extra just kind of button up, like a fleece for if it's cold.
08:54It's obviously middle of summer right now so I'm not using any of this stuff but some
08:58people will do that.
08:59They'll just leave like an extra rain jacket on tour all the time so the next time I fly
09:04to a tour, that's one thing I don't need to bring out with me.
09:07And so this is the first time I brought a few kind of cold temp rainy essentials that I'm
09:12just going to leave with our gear so I'll never have to fly with a rain jacket ever again
09:15if we're doing a banter.
09:16Yeah, I love Patagonia, one of my best buds who lived at my house for a few years, has
09:22worked for them for ages so once again he got me a really good deal so I have a ton of
09:27Patagonia stuff.
09:28It's embarrassing.
09:29But I've done a lot of backpacking trips, I climbed Kilimanjaro a few years ago in Africa
09:35and needed, like this is a really nice Patagonia shell and just needed a ton of gear that I
09:40didn't already own and I just stocked up on Patagonia stuff.
09:42So they also make the best socks on earth.
09:47Their socks, which I'm not wearing right now, are the most comfy socks in the world so buy
09:50your wool Patagonia socks and you'll feel really happy.
09:53Yeah, so again, Kenny from the Head and the Heart, new album Aperture out now, available
09:59wherever you will prefer streaming music or purchasing music, hopefully at your local record
10:05stores.
10:07It's been a blast touring off these new songs and playing them, we're still on the road
10:10and have a lot of dates left this year and next year to be announced eventually.
10:16But yeah, please come out and see us.
10:18It's been a blast and I feel like we've kind of leveled up in a way and I really want our
10:23older fans and newer fans to experience it so come out and join us on the road.
10:27We're around.
10:28And yeah, the Head and the Heart, go to our website or Instagram or Twitter or whatever
10:34you feel like doing and we're everywhere.
10:36But we love you.
10:37Thanks again for watching and I'm Kenny.
