00:00You may never know how strong you are until strength is your only choice and
00:05the strongest people are those who forge battles we know nothing about. The bar
00:10checks of Clare Castle are one such family. This week we're back in the
00:16Banner County with the kings, queens, princes and a few princesses. Stephen. We
00:21have our build team and our design team all here for the big siege of Clare
00:26Castle. Are they allowed to do that? Mind blown. Families are under a lot of pressure. Oh my god what if something happens how am I going to cope
00:38myself with three kids? It's okay. This whole thing, this whole life. It is like winning the lottery.
00:45Welcome to DIY SOS the people of Ireland!
00:56This village in Clare Castle in the Banner County is home to the Barczak family for
01:04over eight years. Do you want coffee? Oh yeah please. Originally from a small town in Poland they
01:10moved to Clare 21 years ago. We're a family of five. Tom who is 19 now and twins Anthony and
01:19Franek. They are 13. What is the plan today? We've been living here eight years in
01:26total so we were renting it first for a couple of years and then we bought it.
01:30We're happy here. It's so nice, so quiet. Oh my goodness! Everything was good when I was pregnant but
01:3921st week something wrong. I'm giving his meds. Yeah. They did the c-section in 31st week and then Franek, they put him into a coma and then on day two he started getting brain bleeds.
01:56It was tough because... Sorry. We can't understand what... We don't know what cerebral palsy really means.
02:05It means that now we will have a disabled child in the house. How are we going to cope with that?
02:09And then shortly after that diagnosis Val and Tania learned that baby Franek also suffered from scoliosis which curves his spine inwards creating severe breathing difficulties.
02:22Plamekilka!
02:24All excited. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger so we said let's move on with life. It is what it is. Now dressing time.
02:32Tania is Franek's full-time carer and she was dealt a shocking and unfair blow some years ago.
02:39Back in 2018 I was in my choir and I don't hear my voice. I was diagnosed the brain tumour.
02:51After a very long and risky operation to remove some of the tumour, Tania lost hearing in her left ear and her balance has never been the same.
03:00Ready? Are you ready? Yes.
03:03The doctor said Tania cannot be doing any lifting because it creates pressure in the tumour and it could be leaking.
03:09Yeah. Oh, bah!
03:11Val and his eldest son Tom take turns to lift Franek around the house and to carry him upstairs.
03:17Yeah, be careful.
03:19So at the moment the staircase is the biggest problem for us. He's like 36 kilograms now so as he gets bigger he gets heavier.
03:27That's not safe. So ideal it would be if everything was downstairs.
03:32Yes! Are you happy?
03:36We still try live normal.
03:39Although people are thinking that we're not normal anyway because quite often we turn everything into something positive and we laugh and smile.
03:45Yes.
03:48Let's do whatever we can do to live a happy life.
03:51My boy.
03:53I've gone right, then right again and I think I'm at the right spot.
04:00Yes, you missed!
04:01Right?
04:02I presume you're Anthony, are you?
04:03Yeah.
04:04Where's the rest of the family?
04:05Oh, inside.
04:06How are y'all?
04:07Hello.
04:08How are you? How nice to meet you?
04:09Tom, is it?
04:10Of course.
04:11Tania, nice to meet you.
04:12Val.
04:13Val, nice to meet you.
04:14I'm Franek.
04:15Hello, Franek.
04:16I love the cakes. These are great.
04:18Well, thank you.
04:19Now, I'm romantic, so tell me, how did you two meet?
04:22We met, actually, at primary school.
04:24Met in primary school?
04:25But I didn't like her at that time.
04:26Okay.
04:27Because she had big eyes and I called her a frog.
04:29Tell me what you really think.
04:31Then we went to different colleges and then we met on the street and we started talking.
04:35So, Jesus Christ, she really changed.
04:39Her eyes grew into her face eventually.
04:43As a family unit, you're all leaning on each other, I imagine, yeah?
04:47The two boys, they obviously dig in as well, do you?
04:49Oh, yeah, of course.
04:50Of course, we hope me and my dad can carry him.
04:53The staircase is the biggest problem for us.
04:55Yeah.
04:56And the same with even bathing him.
04:57We still have to bend down, put him into a bath.
04:59Unfortunately, Franek's scoliosis gets more severe as he grows.
05:04Between 2022, it was at 58 degrees.
05:07The curve, like last year, it was 85.
05:10That must be dangerous.
05:11Pressure on the chest.
05:12Pressure on the chest and his lung.
05:13The breathing becomes more shallow, so he needs to have his surgery.
05:17The crucial surgery is at risk of being delayed as the house is just not suitable for Franek's post-op recovery.
05:25The sooner he has the surgery, the better.
05:29A lot of people would look at the amount of pressure on you and think, God, how do you cope?
05:34Like, we look into everything as a positive thing anyway.
05:36Yeah.
05:37And we loved coffee.
05:39They're a lovely family.
05:40They're very united.
05:41They're very warm.
05:43So this is your room?
05:44Yeah.
05:45I like it.
05:46And you share the room, obviously.
05:47Yeah, I do.
05:48Does all this machinery make a lot of noise at night?
05:50Oh, yeah.
05:51The machine here is, like, a bit loud sometimes, so I sleep downstairs most of the time.
05:56He prefers to sleep downstairs, so he usually sleeps on the sofa here.
06:00So, to do a room for you, obviously you want your TV.
06:03A desk.
06:04Yeah.
06:05And a wardrobe.
06:06And a wardrobe.
06:07Somewhere to hang out?
06:08Yeah.
06:09If you have a child with additional needs, it's only natural that that child takes up a lot of parenting time.
06:16And the boys aren't the type to complain, but they've got their own things going on, you know?
06:21Ah, look at this.
06:23Roll over Beethoven.
06:25Leaving Sirte's student Tom is practically a virtuoso on the old Joanna.
06:30Tell me, how long are you playing the piano?
06:32For about two years.
06:33How did you learn the piano in two years like that?
06:36My friend showed me a few pieces and then just kind of started playing on my own.
06:40Is it hard for you in the family dynamic?
06:47At this point, it's just got so, like, natural to help out with my parents.
06:51Like, I don't really see it as hard.
06:53Just get on with it and, you know, just get it done.
06:58Very nice.
06:59Very nice.
07:00Good class, man.
07:01Housebro Tania has created a lovely home on a tiny budget and is ever attentive to her son's needs.
07:07Are you worried about us coming into your home?
07:10Mm-hmm.
07:11I love that straight away.
07:12I didn't even finish the question bit.
07:13But, first, Franek, it's always.
07:16I want you to be happy as well.
07:18Is there anything you don't want touched or not touched?
07:21Yeah, my table and piano.
07:24Do you play?
07:25No, but I'm singing.
07:27Oh, you like singing?
07:28Yeah, and I'm singing with Franek.
07:31He likes Andrea Bocelli.
07:33I remember when I started singing him, he started smiling a little bit.
07:38And I said, oh, my gosh.
07:40Yeah.
07:42It's fair to say that Dad has turned every stone and worked every hour to try and fix it for Franek's urgent needs.
07:50We were trying to save money for this extension.
07:53We tried the council, we tried the adaptation grant, the TDs, but nothing really worked out at the end.
07:59Oh, my God.
08:00The quotes we were getting from builders were over 120, so we can't afford it.
08:04What was the reaction when you found out the DIY SOS was going to come down?
08:08We were just shaking.
08:10I even start crying now when I think about it.
08:13It is like winning the lottery.
08:15That little boy needs an operation.
08:18He should already have had it done.
08:20The delay is the house.
08:21It's hard being a parent at the best of times.
08:23They're doing their best and they're doing great, but they could do with a little bunt up.
08:27And I think that's what DIY SOS will give them.
08:30Let's do it.
08:32We do it now.
08:33No.
08:34We have to wait for it, people.
08:35Damn it.
08:36The waiting game is over.
08:41Today's the day.
08:42Day one of nine.
08:43But first, the bar checks got to go.
08:45Bar checks, you better get out.
08:47It's a big bad wolf.
08:49Everything's gone?
08:50Everything is gone.
08:51We have one more box.
08:52And the piano.
08:53We're obviously missing someone.
08:55Franek is in the hospital.
08:57How long has he been in the hospital for?
08:58Almost ten days.
08:59Ten days?
09:00Yeah.
09:01His oxygen levels were really down to like critical level.
09:04Okay.
09:05How are you doing?
09:06Me?
09:07Okay.
09:08Five week?
09:09Yeah, Elizabeth.
09:10Hard ten days?
09:11Very hard.
09:12Yeah.
09:13Very hard.
09:14Sorry, I'm not sure who needs more.
09:15Can we do a little...
09:16Listen, honestly, don't be worrying.
09:17I'm so crying.
09:18Don't be worrying, right?
09:19Ten days.
09:20It'll feel very different.
09:24And here are our heroes, including some old friends from a previous Claire project, marching
09:30up to meet the bar checks.
09:32This is probably the smallest build we've done, but it's easily the most urgent.
09:37They've tried everything they can do, and they just can't do anymore.
09:41But we can.
09:42Woo!
09:43We're really grateful that everyone, you know, showed up and wanted to help us, and the support
09:52is just overwhelming.
09:54Franek, unfortunately, is not with us because he's been in hospital for the last ten days.
10:00So he's nonverbal.
10:02He is visually impaired.
10:04He can't sit.
10:05He can't walk.
10:06He can't do anything on his own.
10:09So the whole adaptation of the house will really be life-changing for him, for us.
10:17We really appreciate everybody turning up here as well.
10:20Thank you so much, guys.
10:22Thank you so much for helping out.
10:24And this will change his whole life.
10:27Aw.
10:28Volunteers have arrived from all over Claire and far beyond the banner.
10:40Right?
10:41We've got to listen to the gaffer now.
10:43So we're going to have carpenters upstairs with Dave.
10:46We need plumbers inside with Parik.
10:48Electricals with Stephen.
10:49And we're going to start into it.
10:51Go to work!
10:52Go to work!
10:53I'm a motivational maestro.
10:55Helmet vest boots.
10:56And they're in like Flynn and getting stuck in without further ado.
11:00Trades on top of trades.
11:06Hands with us, please. Come out.
11:08There we go.
11:09Out the window, yeah?
11:11The team that we had in Ennis, you know, a few years ago for Bella,
11:14we have a lot of familiar faces coming back in characters, which is brilliant.
11:18Where's the gaffer?
11:20You're moving fast.
11:21Back door is coming out.
11:23Ceiling has to come down for Stephen.
11:25Fairly quickly.
11:26Fairly quickly, yeah.
11:27Would you not have been better off to pull the kitchen out?
11:29No?
11:30There's a bit of a sentimental value with the family.
11:32One of their requests was to keep it and mind it.
11:34All right.
11:35John, we'll see you later.
11:36So I'll sit up here and make sure no one...
11:38That's your job for them.
11:39That's my job.
11:40No, Paki, no.
11:42Are they allowed to do that?
11:46They're allowed to do that.
11:48I leave the troops tearing the place apart and go in search of our garden designer.
11:55Michael, tell me about the garden.
11:57Well, we had to come up with an amazing design here because the space was so curtained.
12:03Yeah.
12:04So we walk out the patio doors here onto porcelain paving, LED lighting, artificial grass.
12:10Bang, what a feature.
12:12Mind blown.
12:13A tricky little build.
12:14What are we doing?
12:15An extension going to the rear and, I suppose, to transform the internal of the house as
12:20well.
12:21We're in a mid-terrace, so access is a big thing.
12:26We have to get this done in the 90s.
12:27Yeah.
12:28We need to get him back in home as soon as possible.
12:32All appears to be very zen on the inside, but there's a rumble in the concrete jungle out
12:37back and it's not even lunchtime.
12:39Where's what?
12:40Yeah.
12:41We're going to start it.
12:42What's happening now?
12:43We need the trees gone to get the scaffolding up to get our jive together.
12:46Which are there.
12:47Are they not olive trees?
12:48Yeah.
12:49That's the symbol of peace and fertility.
12:51You can't be moving them.
12:52There's no peace here.
12:53We're only going to transfer the peace outside because it's very noisy in here, and then
12:57we're going to move it back again when it's all done.
12:59Can we do it now, though?
13:00We'll do it, John.
13:01We'll do it.
13:02We'll do it.
13:03Great.
13:04You're going to be very careful with them boys, aren't you?
13:06Yeah.
13:07So can we have a sign of friendship or fertility?
13:09It's your choice.
13:10We'll have friendship after nine days.
13:11Nine days time.
13:12I'll see you then.
13:13There we go.
13:14Yeah.
13:15Excellent, lads.
13:16Excellent.
13:17Well done.
13:18Nice route structure out.
13:19Everything good.
13:20Nicely stayed.
13:21Yeah.
13:22Well, as the rooms are almost cleared, I cosy up to Kerry to see what her plans are for
13:28the interiors.
13:29Oh, it's like the best plans.
13:30This is the highlight of my day one, is finding what you've got planned.
13:34Here.
13:35Yeah.
13:36This is going to be the piano.
13:37Yeah.
13:38There's going to be a little shelf and a little light.
13:39It's going to be a lovely space.
13:40We're just going to revamp the kitchen a little bit.
13:42Lights, lots of greenery.
13:43The space here will be Franek's bedroom and ensuite.
13:47Big media wall, big TV, sign system.
13:49Yeah.
13:50Bit of Andrea.
13:51We're not changing too much here, to be honest.
13:53It'll just be our honour.
13:54You're keeping all this?
13:55Yeah, I'm going to keep this.
13:56I know I normally change the spindles, don't I?
13:58Yeah.
13:59What happened?
14:00Midlife crisis.
14:01Jump on in, the water's warm.
14:02This is going to be Anthony's room.
14:04We're going to make it like a proper lads hangout day.
14:06It's really important to look after him as well as Franek.
14:09This is the master bedroom.
14:11Okay.
14:12This space here was all the storage they had.
14:14Yeah.
14:15We've knocked through, so they'll have like a proper, like, no, like a proper swanky, like,
14:21walk-in wardrobe and everything.
14:23The back wall is going to be panelled, but it's not like traditional panelling.
14:27And then half of it's going to be blue, and half it's going to be like raw, natural timber.
14:32I'm going to show you my mother's disapproving look.
14:35I'm a fairly visual person, but I'm not seeing that now.
14:38It'll make sense when you see it.
14:44Dominic, I heard you needed some help.
14:45Can you give me a hand to roll some cones here?
14:47I don't need a gun or something, no.
14:48No, you'll be okay.
14:49You've got a phone in your van.
14:50Dominic, you're a dark horse.
14:51You're a dark horse.
14:52You're a dark, dark horse fella.
14:54I'd be happy to receive a weapon of some sort.
14:56It's just because that was...
15:03Is this your vehicle?
15:04Who wants to know?
15:05Registration, please.
15:06Hand it over.
15:09We'll let him on.
15:10On you go.
15:11I'm watching you.
15:12Thanks, man.
15:13Okay, folks.
15:14The mother of all cranes has mad maxed its way into the estate.
15:19Outside the exclusion zone, folks.
15:20You all need to be back, please.
15:22It's here to lift the timber extension over the roof.
15:25Would you look at the size of it?
15:26Sure, it's bigger than Ennis.
15:28Okay, Claire.
15:29We're here until this is done today.
15:31All right?
15:32Someone say a prayer because we're on a nine-day build.
15:35We need to get this job done.
15:36The erection of the huge crane takes its time,
15:39so I'd pop off in search of a nice sarnie
15:42and a possible scale and a skulk around the old volunteer tent.
15:46So you have to grab it when you can.
15:48Now, ladies, you must look at a group rate.
15:50Where are you coming from?
15:51We came here today from St. Clair's Special School,
15:54where Franek goes every day when he's well.
15:56Oh, he's a great personality, doesn't he?
15:58Oh, yeah.
15:59He's a gentle soul.
16:00The family are extraordinary.
16:02There's never any sadness or anger.
16:05It's all about the future, about what's next.
16:08It's wonderful to see how many people are actually here today
16:11for Franek and his family.
16:13Could you not have got a bigger crane, no?
16:22We tried.
16:23The highs of that thing!
16:25Go big or go home, you know what they say?
16:27Talking at home, how's day one going?
16:29Good, yeah, good.
16:30We're not finished yet.
16:31Another two hours, maybe.
16:32Get things tidied up, time get ahead.
16:34We lost some time today because of that big crane.
16:36That timber frane has to be finished today
16:38so that we have block layers on site in the morning
16:40to start laying blocks.
16:41How's the volunteers been for you today?
16:43Ah, brilliant, absolutely.
16:44It's great to see people come back
16:46and a lot of people that we have seen before have turned up.
16:48Yeah.
16:49It's a drug.
16:50You come day one, it's been one day,
16:52day five or six, you're still there.
16:54Do you know who else is a drug?
16:56Bring it in!
17:00How are we getting on here?
17:01We have an accessible bathroom here for Franek.
17:03This is the link parked in from the house out here.
17:05His bed is going to be here,
17:06and the hoist will connect into the bathroom.
17:08Wow, okay, brilliant.
17:09Day one went really well.
17:10Whole extension here,
17:12and seeing everyone grafting.
17:14Steven's a little bit behind on the electric side of things.
17:17But we've got the whole extension.
17:18Look at it.
17:19Like, that's the roof.
17:20The roof is on it already.
17:22We're one day closer to handling the keys over to the bar chicks.
17:26For all here at Clare Castle, there is just one focus.
17:38To build a safe space for young Franek.
17:40Today, we're finishing their roof.
17:42They'll be out here in about two hours.
17:44But that means we're held up with block layers.
17:46So the windows came this morning as scheduled,
17:48and we weren't ready for them.
17:50So we had to send them away.
17:54There's good support.
17:55There's good help out there.
17:56Their volunteers are brilliant.
17:57It's a no-brainer.
17:58Some of us are more fortunate than others.
18:01So anything that can be done is of great help.
18:04You know, it's a heartbreaking story,
18:06but it's bringing a bit of community as well.
18:08I can stop smiling as we come in.
18:10Everyone has something nice to say.
18:11I know everyone's name as well, which is great.
18:17It's early days on the build,
18:19but it's day 11 for young Franek in hospital,
18:22recovering from a very critical attack.
18:25I've popped away to see how he's doing.
18:28Hey Franek.
18:29Say hello.
18:30Hey.
18:31How's he doing today?
18:32He's feeling better.
18:36It's okay.
18:37You're the best boy, yeah?
18:39Mom's top.
18:41He's had a rough week.
18:42They've all had a rough week.
18:44Love me tender.
18:46They haven't asked for a lot.
18:48They want the house to be accessible for their child.
18:51I love you and I'm always well.
19:00We've got hundreds of people from all over Ireland
19:03and they're trying to make their situation the best it can be.
19:05Just got to get its own.
19:10Back on site, it's still buzzing.
19:13Busy as a beehive.
19:17There are bricks on the new wall and the extension windows have arrived.
19:21Good man.
19:22You came back with the windows.
19:24Yeah.
19:25No one likes rejection, John.
19:26No, I'm sure we went away.
19:27We've done another few more windows and we came back.
19:28Yeah.
19:29Probably one.
19:31Did it not like go like there?
19:33Ooh, sparks are flying in the hallway between the electrician and the designer.
19:38Not good sparks.
19:39It's all over that box.
19:40Because you can't be bothered moving it or because that's like a physical impossibility?
19:43It's a physical impossibility.
19:44Are you sure?
19:45The plan was we're going to have a mirror on the right hand side, but Steve-O decided
19:50to put a giant fuse box, which to be fair, he needs to because they're putting solar panels
19:55in.
19:56But why can it not just shift to the right a bit?
19:58Or else at least here.
19:59Not I hope I was able to move that fuse board.
20:01The mains cable coming in is only a certain height, so it has to stay where it is.
20:05What if we just flipped a mirror to this wall?
20:07But that's not what I wanted it.
20:09Oh, God.
20:11It's like having children in the back of a car.
20:13Mirror there, nice fuse box there, and everyone's sorted.
20:17Yeah.
20:18That's a head work to do.
20:19Thank you, Baz.
20:20I love the way you pretend that you actually fixed that.
20:22I would move it if I could.
20:24She knows that.
20:26You know I would have moved it if I could.
20:28It's quite a large space, so it needs a bigger mirror than I've ordered.
20:33I'm going to find you one.
20:34Okay.
20:35Today was good, and it's ended even better, because I've heard that Frannock is coming
20:41out of hospital, which is a big relief.
20:44So there's a really nice vibe on site.
20:51A new sunrise brings a new slog.
20:54Lorry loads of it, but fortunately, truckloads of volunteers also.
20:58It's really busy inside.
20:59Finishing electrical plumbing, force fix, and closing up walls, then slabbing.
21:03We'd like to be a bit further ahead, but look, we have the weather, so we can't complain.
21:08God, there's some sweaty men coming out with that habit.
21:11Sweaty men, yeah.
21:12Honestly, how hot is it up there?
21:13I'd say it's about 48 degrees.
21:15Wow.
21:16We're fitting the gas boiler.
21:17You've moved the boiler?
21:18Going from the original utility right up to the top of the attic.
21:21They need every inch.
21:22Listen, the plumbers got a hard time off some of the other trades.
21:25You're holding your own corner, eh?
21:26We're holding our own.
21:27I saw the lads doing the floor now, giving you an awful eyeball over there.
21:30Thanks.
21:31They can be intimidating when they come in trees.
21:33They won't come into my world up in the attic, though.
21:35They'll stay down here and be smattered, John.
21:36Yeah, yeah.
21:39When I come here feeling tired and beat, I go up to where the air is fresh and sweet.
21:47That's right.
21:48The Up On The Roof gang are all singing from the one poly sheet.
21:52So we're doing a Firestone or Elevate EPDM.
21:55Completely stuffed down everywhere.
21:57It's great to see the community coming together.
22:00There's people everywhere.
22:01Everybody's doing something.
22:02It'll be a mighty job.
22:03The heat up here is cruel today.
22:05It's like, what, 24 degrees?
22:10Oh, it is midday madness.
22:12With the temperature jumping to the 30s, it's a melt.
22:16Oh!
22:17Thank you very much.
22:18But a champion neighbour has an ice idea to keep the troops cool.
22:22If you're in there now, you'll find a few buckets of sweat has air only there.
22:25But morale is good, and we're getting well looked after here, so.
22:29We're not designed for heat in Ireland, so slowing us down.
22:31We'll actually get more done, hopefully, this evening when it cools down.
22:35Leaving the soldiers to sweat it out, I head to the village to meet Val.
22:40How's Franek doing now?
22:41He's really well.
22:42He has this amazing impact on people, because I've met all these different people,
22:46and they all just adore him and you guys as parents.
22:51I think they do, because he's a happy child.
22:53Although, whatever, I think he's just a child trapped in a disabled body,
22:58that he would love to do things that he can't.
23:01But other than that, he's a happy child.
23:03Tell me this.
23:04Family is obviously so important to you.
23:06As a dad, what's your role in the family?
23:09You see, I always think that I have to provide for the family anyway,
23:12so I'm trying to work hard as well, because Tanya's on the care's allowance.
23:16He's now with three kids, an adult son who is going to go to college now.
23:20So, yeah, I'm trying to work hard, you see, to save money for him as well.
23:24But you must be incredibly strong, because when Tanya got sick...
23:28I thought, first of all, oh, my God, what's going to happen to her if something happens?
23:32How am I going to cope myself with three kids?
23:37When she had to go for the surgery, then we said,
23:39what are we going to do with Franek?
23:40If you have to stay in Dublin in a hospital for three, four weeks,
23:43who will look after Franek?
23:45How am I going to cope with the other two boys?
23:47I have to work at the same time.
23:49So thank God, again, with lovely people that we met.
23:52If you were to give advice to parents who, you know,
23:56they have a child with a disability and how they're feeling overwhelmed
23:59and had to overcome it, what would you say to them?
24:02Live day by day and never give up on your child,
24:04because you never know what's going to happen.
24:06You know, miracles do happen.
24:08Yeah.
24:09You're a great dad, you're a great husband, honestly.
24:12A lot of parents are driven by, you know,
24:14wanting to do the best for their kids.
24:16So to walk out of a surgeon's office who's telling you
24:18this child needs certain requirements to have this operation and come home,
24:22and then you just can't give him that,
24:25that's an unfair punishment, you know, for...
24:28for being a great dad and trying your best.
24:31I think it will knock him on his ass
24:34when he sees what these people have done to his home.
24:43I thought Kerry said the stairs were remaining.
24:46I should have saw that coming.
24:47There's a scatter of soldiers on the spindles and everywhere else.
24:51The volunteers are very good because of the people that are involved.
24:54They see the reason why we're doing it and why it has to be done.
24:58It's been tough in the family.
24:59You can see the emotion that was in them, like,
25:01that hits everyone, like, especially when you have kids
25:03and family or self.
25:05I mean, I don't know.
25:09Hi, guys.
25:10It's been a pleasure to give to somebody else.
25:13You never know when any of us need help or self.
25:16You'd happily do it again.
25:17To have the whole house transformed,
25:18I'd say they'd be very overwhelmed.
25:20It's so amazing that so much can be done in such a short space of time.
25:25It's incredible.
25:29The gentlemen from the men's sheds have crafted gorgeous planters
25:33for the cherished and treasured olive trees.
25:36These look great.
25:37There was a special request from the family.
25:39They wanted to keep those trees.
25:40Yeah.
25:41And then they wanted to keep this table as well.
25:43That table, it may not be worth much financially,
25:46but it's a huge sentimental value to the family.
25:48Yeah.
25:49So we're doing our best to put a bit of a shine and a gloss to it.
25:52Aren't the older volunteers unbelievable?
25:55See, people make the mistake.
25:57They think, oh, well, they have loads of time.
25:59They don't have loads of time.
26:00They've got loads of heart.
26:01The strain of a sick child in a house,
26:04I know from my own personal experience.
26:06I had two kids who had 60 fibrosis.
26:09Patty died in 2008,
26:10and three years later, Kathleen died.
26:12So sorry to hear that.
26:14You know, so I can identify with them.
26:16And the strain and the pressure,
26:18it puts on relationships.
26:19It puts on the wheelings and dealings
26:21of the day-to-day running of a house.
26:23It's huge.
26:24I just don't know what goes on in someone's life.
26:27It's someone like Liam having two children,
26:29losing two children to cystic fibrosis.
26:32And still being so busy and so active.
26:34It's for living, Baz.
26:35This is it.
26:36Absolutely.
26:37Life is for living.
26:38Our design maven is on her mid-project inspection.
26:44This is huge.
26:45Look how much light there is.
26:46Steven hard at work.
26:47Just about.
26:48This is amazing.
26:49But alas, not everything is amazing in Franek's bathroom.
26:51Oh, lads.
26:52Are those dry yet?
26:53Just wondering.
26:54I know it sounds really silly,
26:55and it sounds like I'm being really pernickety, but...
26:56Is it dry?
26:57A lot of the time I kind of prefer them to be vertical
26:59rather than horizontal,
27:00because it kind of makes the room look taller.
27:01I think they'll be better this way.
27:03I'm so surprised you said that.
27:04But you weren't here two hours ago.
27:05I know, I'm really sorry.
27:06I think there's a bit of giving that.
27:07There's more giving that than there is in me.
27:08We can make it work.
27:09Thank you so much, lad.
27:10I love the old choc houses.
27:11We'll find some choc houses from somewhere.
27:12A small price to pay, I think,
27:13to get your bathroom looking the right way.
27:14Or a loop-de-loop.
27:15I know there's enough loop-de-loops around here.
27:17There's enough loop-de-loops around here.
27:19While Kerry deals with these loop-de-loops downstairs,
27:22I head upstairs in search of the joiners creating the bespoke furniture.
27:26When we heard that,
27:27there's more giving that than there is in me.
27:28There's more giving that than there is in me.
27:30We can make it work.
27:31Thank you so much, lad.
27:32I love the old choc houses.
27:33We'll find some choc houses from somewhere.
27:34A small price to pay, I think,
27:35to get your bathroom looking the right way.
27:36Or a loop-de-loop.
27:37I know there's enough loop-de-loops around here.
27:40While Kerry deals with these loop-de-loops downstairs,
27:43I head upstairs in search of the joiners creating the bespoke furniture.
27:48When we heard that the family is from Poland,
27:50we said, we have to help.
27:51Are you all Polish?
27:52Yeah, yes.
27:53And where do you do most of your work?
27:55Dublin.
27:56You must have left very early.
27:57To get up at 3.30 this morning.
27:59What did you come in to do exactly?
28:01Boom back, the wardrobe and a small desk.
28:03Well, we might have a very bespoke job.
28:05It's the designer was looking for an antique mirror.
28:08If you have the stuff on it, like, we'll help you with it.
28:11Yeah.
28:12Thanks, lad.
28:14Good work.
28:15Brendan, any chance you run down Chadwick's there for us?
28:17Come on up.
28:18Ah, jeez.
28:19I like the dinosaur beds.
28:20What's your point, Dave?
28:21What do you want?
28:22Three sheets of OSB3.
28:23B3.
28:24Yeah.
28:25OSB.
28:26B.
28:27B.
28:28B.
28:29B.
28:30And then give us a tub of glow as well.
28:31Right.
28:32Let's go on a winner.
28:33Let's do it.
28:34It's like an apprenticeship today.
28:35It is.
28:36We'll stop for coffee first.
28:37Take the breaks when you get them, Brandon.
28:39Great stuff.
28:40Thank you very much.
28:41Do you mind?
28:42Men at work.
28:43Carrie?
28:44Can I trust you guys to make, like, an interior design decision for me?
28:48Oh, yeah.
28:49I need paint to make the large mirror we're talking about.
28:54Gold.
28:55Is it Carrie or bronze?
28:56Well, more of a bronzy gold.
28:57No problem.
28:58That's what we're there for.
28:59Yeah, that's what we're there for.
29:00You look here and I look here.
29:01Carrie?
29:02So sorry.
29:03I also need knobs for the kitchen.
29:18Is it big or small knobs, Carrie?
29:20It's a small knob.
29:21Okay.
29:22What colour small knobs?
29:23Brushed bronze.
29:24Your mouth is a small knob.
29:25Brushed bronze.
29:26You're mad for brushed bronze.
29:27Nobs.
29:28Yeah.
29:29We're on it.
29:30Okay.
29:31Bye-bye.
29:32I may have made a mistake here.
29:33I can find a knob.
29:40What's better than a volunteer plaster?
29:42A pair of volunteer plasters.
29:44Or two.
29:45Today we have two couple plasters.
29:47Harry and his wife are walking upstairs, and Smiley and his wife are downstairs.
29:50And we haven't pit them off against each other yet.
29:53But Smiley is your actual name.
29:54It's my name, yeah.
29:55How my mother knew that.
29:56Yeah.
29:57She knew before I was born and she knew I would be laughing.
29:59Yeah.
30:00That's my time to shine.
30:02I know about myself.
30:03He's a lovely guy.
30:04So I just had to help out.
30:05They need it, John.
30:06It's often to think that he can't be home until that's done.
30:08It's why you do it.
30:09Every day I come, I'm learning something new, so I'm loving it.
30:12Can we be back tomorrow for some more?
30:14Yeah.
30:19An old DIY SOS friend, well not so old, teen Bella has wheeled in to give a hand. Fair play.
30:26You're here to help.
30:27I am. I'm going to be making a cushion.
30:29I like the material.
30:32What do you think?
30:33I think I'm going to say welcome in Polish.
30:35Ah, that's very thoughtful.
30:37And how's the house working out?
30:38The house is working out great.
30:39And do you use the lift?
30:40I do use the lift, yes.
30:41Do you?
30:42Are you just saying that?
30:43No, I do.
30:44Really?
30:45So you know what it'll be like for them when they move into their new home?
30:47Yeah.
30:48Life changes.
30:49Life changes.
30:50What else are you into now?
30:51Makeup.
30:52If you had a free rein on me, what do you think I'm lacking or need?
30:55Maybe some mascara for the eyes as well to make them pop a bit more.
30:59Pop a bit more?
31:00Yeah.
31:01I thought my eyes just fine.
31:04ZB Top and his band of chippies are proper popping.
31:11They have whizzed through Anthony's bedroom and get cracking on the mirror frame.
31:15We have the paint.
31:16It's like an old goldy kind of bronzy colour.
31:19Perfect.
31:20We're in the throes of it now.
31:23It's like panic stations trying to get everything moved out of our way.
31:27My issue at the moment is the tunnel going down the side.
31:30It's very tight for everyone to go in and out.
31:32The water feature is going in here.
31:34I love the way you're doing this though.
31:36Proper job.
31:37Problem is we're going to be trying to grout.
31:39We're going to be trying to get the artificial grass down.
31:41Yeah.
31:42People that want to go in and out to get finished.
31:44Yeah.
31:45It's going to be a hustle.
31:46The road.
31:47Now I saw you gazing up at the roof there.
31:49Why is that?
31:50We're fitting six PV panels here.
31:51With the batteries now they'll be able to store power for night time usage.
31:55Charge power from the grid.
31:56Sell to the grid.
31:57Brilliant.
31:58Back at camp a fresh torrent of rain results in a fresh torrent of problems.
32:08The weather isn't in our favour at the moment.
32:11We had this external render on this morning.
32:13Going lovely.
32:14Almost finished.
32:15With the rain that has come.
32:16It has washed some of the plaster off.
32:19It's grim.
32:20Not ideal.
32:25Kerry brightens up the day and makes good on her promise.
32:28Hey.
32:29Hey.
32:30It looks amazing.
32:31That's the wrong weather now but I did bring it.
32:33Oh, look John.
32:34We're getting an ice cream now.
32:36I'm delighted now.
32:37They are much better that way round.
32:39It was worth two chalk ices to be fair.
32:41High five.
32:42Cheers lads.
32:43Anything for Frannock.
32:44Puzzles and pools.
32:47No muddy paws allowed in.
32:49From now.
32:51Brennan.
32:52What time do you arrive at?
32:54Six.
32:55Who'd you bring with you?
32:56I brought a few lads there.
32:58Six of them.
32:59Brennan, where are you from?
33:02Brazil originally.
33:03Originally.
33:04Too long talking to locals.
33:06Was there an Irish woman involved somewhere?
33:08Oh, there is of course.
33:09Oh, God.
33:10We're late into the evening now.
33:12How long more are you going to stay here doing this?
33:15I'll be here till 10 this evening.
33:16Then I'll be back at five.
33:17So I'll see you tomorrow morning at five.
33:19You can open up the place.
33:20Oh, yeah, sure.
33:21I'm always there welcoming people in.
33:22My missus was here now.
33:23It's not just at you.
33:24You're some golf shite.
33:27It's late but you can hear them.
33:29Hear that?
33:30Still working away.
33:31Rene is upstairs painting.
33:33Guys in the garden.
33:34Guys in the kitchen.
33:35It's a good day.
33:42My mom, Nancy, always screamed at me.
33:45If you'd put in the groundwork, Basel, it'll pave the way.
33:48It never really made sense.
33:50Until now.
33:51Look at these lads.
33:52Now it makes sense.
33:54We're less than 48 hours, yeah.
33:56We're definitely less than I wish we had 48 hours.
33:59We've capping to do yet.
34:01We've all the soil to get in.
34:03We've the planting to do.
34:04We've the artificial grass to get in.
34:06We've lighting to get on.
34:07We've the water feature to get in.
34:09We've a lot to do.
34:14Tanya loves the captivating cliffs of Moher.
34:17So I head west to meet her.
34:20What does it mean to you, what the volunteers are doing?
34:25I was shocked when people come and want to have my family.
34:32What's it like having twins with such different needs?
34:37When they born, it was very difficult for me.
34:40Because Franek was lots of time in hospital.
34:44And my head, I have make like this.
34:46And this is for Franek.
34:48And this is for Anton and Tom.
34:50And we have...
34:51But then you weren't well, right?
34:52You weren't well.
34:53Yeah.
34:54So there's very little space for you in that head space.
34:58When your surgery was done, how were you after that?
35:02I have two months rehabilitation.
35:05And start learning walking.
35:08Learning to walk again?
35:09Oh, yeah.
35:10Why?
35:11Because you've lost your balance?
35:12Yeah, my balance.
35:13It's still like...
35:14It's all connected to the hearing.
35:15Yes.
35:16You're a tough girl.
35:17Honestly.
35:18Honestly, that's unbelievable.
35:19Sometimes when I'm sitting with him, his special energy give me.
35:26And then I say, okay.
35:27You can do it.
35:28Yeah, of course.
35:29Every day.
35:30Do you get time to yourself at all?
35:32When I'm drinking coffee in the morning.
35:3510, 15 minutes.
35:37That's a no.
35:38No.
35:39Okay.
35:42Back on site, it's more mayhem than majesty.
35:45It's back to the wall.
35:47And we're running out of time.
35:51Well, for you, you can just sit around reading letters.
35:54Come on, have a look at this.
35:57Luke.
35:58No.
35:59Andrea Bocelli.
36:00Too frantic.
36:01I recall the joy of recently meeting this devoted 13-year-old fan
36:05and his family during my concert in Dublin.
36:07That's awesome.
36:08Brannica loved that.
36:10There's the picture of him.
36:11So I'm going to put them like in kind of double frames
36:13beside each other.
36:14Yeah.
36:15He could have turned up and banged out a couple of renditions.
36:17Well, he could have tuned.
36:18Yeah, but it's kind of a little bit far away.
36:19But still.
36:20But still.
36:21Time to say goodbye.
36:27Where do you want this?
36:28So there's a little bit of second fixed carpentry.
36:29Handles on doors.
36:30The painters are in there.
36:31They nearly have upstairs done.
36:32Stephen is working away with his lads.
36:33The guys are out the back.
36:34So there's a nice bit going on, yeah?
36:35There's very good help today.
36:36We've seen sure there now.
36:37The min shed are there.
36:38There must be 20 of them there.
36:39So they're brilliant.
36:40They're helping to move and stuff.
36:41Karen Brandon.
36:42Look what I made.
36:43She's using a mighty job with that.
36:44Then once you get the paint, have a look at that.
36:45I'm looking at the paint and it looks a bit gaudy.
36:46What do you mean gaudy?
36:47It's like mustard.
36:48Look at that.
36:49That's fantastic.
36:50I'm not sure lads.
36:51I'm wondering whether we should just go with like an off white.
36:52What?
36:53So it's nice to be going on, yeah?
36:54It's nice to be going on, yeah?
36:55There's very good help today.
36:56We've seen sure there now.
36:57The min shed are there.
36:58There must be 20 of them there.
36:59So they're brilliant.
37:00They're helping to move and stuff.
37:01Karen Brandon.
37:02Look what I made.
37:03She's using a mighty job with that, Fez.
37:04Then once you get the paint, have a look at that.
37:05I'm looking at the paint and it looks a bit gaudy.
37:06What do you mean gaudy?
37:07Look at that.
37:08That's fantastic.
37:09I'm not sure lads.
37:10I'm wondering whether we should just go with like an off white.
37:14What?
37:15But the walls are white.
37:16We spend a lot of time selecting the exact right paint that you asked for.
37:21Just look away for a minute and then look down really quickly.
37:25It still looks rubbish.
37:27Oh God.
37:28I don't know.
37:29I'm not going with it.
37:30I'm not going with it.
37:31Sorry to upset you.
37:33No, no.
37:34Just got a bit of paint in my eye.
37:36Outside and inside, the volunteers are soldiering on while trying to avoid the beautiful new
37:43paint job by Team Brazil.
37:45Still here at dusk.
37:49Our weary workhorses need a giddy up, a jig if you will.
37:53Turns out our garden designer is a former lead river dancer.
37:56And tonight he will swap the steel toe boots for hard shoes with the trio of the Tulla Cayley Band.
38:06You know what you're going to get here in Clare?
38:09You're going to get a bit of crack, a bit of good music and hard work.
38:12It's amazing what it does for people.
38:13Woo!
38:14I didn't know he was that good now.
38:15Woo!
38:16Woo!
38:17Do you like that?
38:18I think that's what just everybody needed here on site.
38:19It's going to get everybody over the line.
38:20Well, like that's what I expect from our purple shirts.
38:25I expect them to do a 14 hour day, come here, high kick their way through a couple of sets,
38:31and then back to work.
38:32There's now a proper pep in the step for the last day, and the tarmac has arrived for the front.
38:37Terrific start.
38:38Still going strong, but exhausted, yeah.
38:39It's been a long nine days.
38:40We're nearly there now.
38:41Another 10 hours I suppose maybe.
38:42I don't know.
38:43I don't know.
38:44I don't know.
38:45I don't know.
38:46I don't know.

38:48Last day, big push.
38:49A lot to do.
38:50I suppose anything that could go wrong, will go wrong.
38:54So far it's a little bit of bedlam in there.
39:01But there's a lot of people that go wrong.
39:04There's now a proper pep in the step for the last day, and the tarmac has arrived for the front.
39:09Terrific start.
39:10Still going strong, but exhausted, yeah.
39:11It's been a long nine days.
