00:01Hope is the foundation which faith can build anything,
00:05even a house.
00:07What's the story this week?
00:09We're back in Dublin and we're California Dreamin'.
00:12We've got volunteers who are true blues
00:14and every other county you could choose
00:16all here to help one little old star called Caden O'Connor.
00:20Caden was born nine years ago with a very rare condition.
00:26And you're okay with us taking a sled?
00:28Do what you want.
00:29You can burn the house.
00:30I know, we'll survive the morning now.
00:32To date, this young soldier has braved and battled 36 operations.
00:38He had his force cast when he was a week old
00:41and then he had his little hand cast.
00:44But Caden's day-to-day is becoming increasingly challenging
00:48as this house is not wheelchair accessible.
00:51So we need a ramp, more accessibility downstairs
00:55just for him to come and go when he wants to.
00:58DIY SOS is breeding a new lease life in those and into the house.
01:04I can't believe people are coming to help us out.
01:07It's going to be life changing.
01:09It's physical, it's financial and definitely mental as well.
01:13In just nine days, heroes will move bricks, mortar and mountains
01:17to create a better home for Caden and his family.
01:20Welcome to DIY SOS, the big built Ireland!
01:24Yay!
01:25Up the door! Up the door!
01:27Get out of here!
01:29Get out of here!
01:30Get out of here!
01:31Get out of here!
01:32Killin Arden in Talla is nestled under the Dublin mountains
01:36and is home to Ron Sinead and their two boys.
01:38Mum and Dad were sweethearts from early doors.
01:41Met when we were teenagers.
01:44He was always chasing me.
01:45And then we had Ethan.
01:50That started our family off.
01:52And then we had Caden.
01:54We just got the biggest shock of our lives
01:56when the nurse told us that there was something wrong with her baby.
02:00At first they said that.
02:03We don't know where he was going to survive.
02:06But like, I knew he was going to survive because I felt him kicking.
02:09He came out kicking and screaming.
02:11We just high-fived one another.
02:13We were like, right, he's here.
02:15Now.
02:16Now.
02:17He had a condition called arthrogryposis,
02:20which affects his joints in his hands and his feet.
02:24And then scoliosis.
02:25Also born with scoliosis.
02:27I could live with the disability.
02:28It's the scoliosis that kills us.
02:30It's the surgeries.
02:31Constant surgeries.
02:34Twice a year he'd go in for a lengthening.
02:37He has telescopic bars as he grows.
02:39They have to lengthen them a bit.
02:42Sometimes they bring him up in the theatre.
02:45Put him on there to stretch him.
02:48Syringes.
02:50Oh, you got it.
02:51You finished?
02:52No.
02:53From the time he gets up, it fades.
02:56Because he has something wrong with his muscles also.
03:00They done the swallow test and you could see it going into his lungs.
03:04So if he aspirates into his lungs, it's very dangerous for him.
03:08So that's why we have to peg feed him.
03:10I'd love to go out and buy him a Happy Meal and sit there and he'd eat all the Happy Meal.
03:14It looked like I had rabies.
03:18That's the white coming out my mouth.
03:20I don't know where we got him.
03:22He's the devil in disguise.
03:26Always a comedian.
03:28Doesn't let his disability stop him.
03:30Boo!
03:32Sold.
03:33Well, I have my ticket for the best show in town.
03:35And I'm very much looking forward to meeting this comedian and his family.
03:42Heya, TV licence?
03:43What's your condition called?
03:45Arthrogyphosis.
03:46Very good.
03:47Slow that down for me.
03:48What's it called?
03:49Arthrogyphosis.
03:50You have surgeries and things like that, do you?
03:52Yes.
03:53I had about like 50 surgeries altogether.
03:55Big operation.
03:56When the length of the small bars were fully lengthened.
04:00So we had to remove all that to put the new ones in, the bigger bars in as he's getting bigger.
04:05Do you have a chair to get around the house then?
04:07Yes.
04:08You can't use the wheelchair that much because it's just not big enough.
04:12Do you have a driving licence for that?
04:13Yes.
04:14When he gets into his chair, I call him a little shoemaker.
04:18But this track is way too tight for this boy racer.
04:21He bounces off everything.
04:23Why is the radiator still on the wall?
04:26What's that radiator?
04:27A bigger chair won't fit through.
04:29That's all the way it is there now, like.
04:30It just needs to be accessible and it's just not.
04:34The house just isn't made for a wheelchair.
04:37How do you go upstairs and downstairs?
04:39If she's a bit lazy, she'll get my dad.
04:44Every time he wants to go up and down the stairs to play the PlayStation,
04:47Ma'am, can you bring me up?
04:48You do that ten times a day.
04:50We don't complain in front of him.
04:53No.
04:54Never say anything about, oh, my back.
04:55Yeah, my back's in blitzing.
04:57This is his chill out room.
04:58My PS5.
04:59Oh, you're a gamer.
05:00I've been trying to beat this for like an hour now.
05:03I like my bedroom to be red.
05:06Like in many Irish homes, this house is split in two.
05:09God, it's a Liverpool house.
05:10By that big red divide.
05:12What do you think the biggest obstacles with the gaffers?
05:14Er, I'm only kidding on to the toilet and getting up and down the stairs.
05:17So this is where he has a shower.
05:20I had to put a deck chair into the shower and take the shower door off so he could fit.
05:24We need a bigger boat.
05:26We're going to need a bigger boat.
05:28Just do downstairs, we're happy.
05:30Yeah.
05:31It's all about Cain.
05:32Yeah.
05:33It's all about his needs.
05:34Before the big throw-in, some safety measures are put in place with asbestos removal.
05:39Today, we are removing crisatile asbestos, which is in the ceilings of the entire house.
05:44The works will take approximately three to four days.
05:50And foundations are poured for the extension.
05:53So now we're ready for kick-off.
05:58But first, I have to give Cain and his family the red card and send them on their merry way.
06:03How are you, man?
06:04How's it going, Cain?
06:05Excited.
06:06How are you?
06:07Real excited.
06:08How are you feeling?
06:09Nervous, excited.
06:10Let's do this.
06:11OK, let's go.
06:16I just want to say thank you to every single person.
06:20I just don't know what else to say.
06:21I'm so emotional by everyone's generosity.
06:24We're so grateful for everyone turning out to change Cain's life completely.
06:29For the people who don't know, it's called Art of Actrosis.
06:32Cain needs multiple surgeries, but the little warrior does it.
06:39His ability to use his chair in the house is just going to be amazing.
06:43It's going to be life-changing.
06:45Thank you, everyone.
06:51Gaffer's going to talk.
06:52Now is the best part.
06:53Ripping everything a Sunday.
06:54Wreck the Gaff!
06:55Wreck the Gaff!
06:56Wreck the Gaff!
06:57Wreck the Gaff!
06:58And Wreck-It, they do.
06:59They go at it like a Dublin demolition disco.
07:00First thing, I want the kitchen taken out.
07:01Why don't you anyway?
07:02Use those big guns.
07:03Big guns with bigger gusto gets stuck into some serious dripping.
07:16No, not like that.
07:17It's a family show.
07:18Oh, no, John!
07:19The shed's got to go!
07:20That shed stood no chance.
07:21How long is that going to take to come down?
07:22I'd say 15 minutes, Baz.
07:23OK.
07:24And it stands no more.
07:25Open up the back garden.
07:26While these doves demolish everything to the ground, I head upstairs for speedy recycling
07:41duties.
07:42We're keeping the kitchen, right?
07:43We're going to recycle as much as we can from the house.
07:44Keeping doubts, you ask.
07:45One fella's trash is another fella's treasure.
07:46Sometimes you really do walk alone.
07:47Toxic!
07:48Don't look at it!
07:49Don't breathe it in!
07:50So far, so good.
07:51Bar trouble with my only tool.
07:52I broke my thing, but you fixed it.
07:53I've put a knot in your whistle.
07:54I've been told to put a knot in it a few times.
07:55Better get back to it.
07:56I've got a knot in it a few times.
07:57Better get back to it.
07:58I've got a knot in it.
07:59I've got a knot in it.
08:00I've got a knot in it.
08:01I've got a knot in it.
08:02I've got a knot in it.
08:03I've got a knot in it.
08:04What's your favourite thing to smash?
08:05Glass.
08:06Me too.
08:07It's very similar to the sound effects when I come home when I come home when I come
08:11to the house.
08:12I've got a knot in it.
08:13I've got a knot in it.
08:14I've got a knot in it.
08:15I've got a knot in it.
08:16I've got a knot in it a few times.
08:17Better get back to it.
08:18I've got a knot in it.
08:19I've got a knot in it a few times.
08:20I've got to get back to it.
08:21Sorry about that.
08:22Tell you no goods, no black pudding.
08:23Hey!
08:24Hey!
08:25Where'd that go?
08:26A lot of smashing today.
08:27There's a lot of demolition.
08:28Everything from your ground floor has been taken out.
08:29First floor, studs, partitions removed.
08:30Very similar to the sound effects when I come home about 4am.
08:35Tell you there's no shortage of ambition.
08:37They demolished that place.
08:40And spirit to sort out this home to suit Caden.
08:44But how in this tight terrace space?
08:47You guys love drawings, don't you?
08:49You love them.
08:50Where do you start when you were planning?
08:52Where can we locate a space for Caden's bedroom and a bathroom that's accessible?
08:58Because the site is tight, we needed to find that additional space without compromising the existing house.
09:03The move here was to actually give him an independent space outside of that footprint.
09:08Think about how Caden's going to use this space now and how he's going to use it in the future.
09:13And I remember when I spoke to Ron, he said, I'd be happy with a ramp into that front door.
09:17This is just a game changer for that whole family.
09:21It's really, really great.
09:26One of my favorite parts of the day.
09:27We've got completely new stairs.
09:29Well, this stairs are narrower.
09:30No, it made the newel pose slimmer.
09:32Newel pose.
09:33N-E-W-E-L.
09:34We've actually got this infrared panel so it looks like a picture, but it works the radiator so it's off the wall.
09:39The rad was out to here, gaining like a few inches.
09:41The whole thing is an obstacle course for him.
09:44Every doorway is a barrier.
09:46Every staircase is a wall.
09:48To have that kind of obstacle in front of him, it's hard.
09:52But it will become easier in just eight more days when these jigsaw blocks become a bedroom.
09:58Large bathroom, courtyard, and rear garden for Caden.
10:02This is the exciting part.
10:04Well, it's all exciting, but this is the most exciting part.
10:06This is...
10:07When does this come up?
10:08The ICF.
10:09I've never seen that in my life.
10:11It's like Lego.
10:12This is Caden's space.
10:13Kerry, will you do that thing where you visualize everything for me?
10:15Well, you're having a shower just now.
10:16Woo!
10:17Get out, Kerry!
10:18Bit of privacy.
10:19Told me he wants a red room.
10:21I heard United fans.
10:22Is Man United red different to Liverpool red?
10:23Just go.
10:24I'd like to see upstairs.
10:25The original room was here, right?
10:27And this was Caden's room.
10:29We're going to keep the door here, take this out, and have an option to have storage.
10:33Boring!
10:34Who wants storage when you can have a super-duper master bedroom?
10:38Jesus!
10:39Tony!
10:40How long have you been there?
10:42Since you're up there eavesdropping creepily, what do you think?
10:45Would you prefer this as one big master bedroom?
10:47Yes.
10:48Huge master bedroom.
10:49I'll think about it.
10:52Back again like the renegade master.
10:54You know Ron.
10:55I know Ron 10 years.
10:56He's worked for the company for 15 years now.
10:58They don't ask for a lot.
11:00They're kind of doers.
11:01He takes two hours every morning to get to the job.
11:04But Ronnie, as a person, doesn't complain.
11:07He said that Caden never moans.
11:10It's very hard to complain around someone like that.
11:14From Mallon to Muff, may I present the Donegal Dry Lining Dependables.
11:19Loads of them digging in with the dubs for initial slabbing.
11:22How you like me now?
11:23How you like me now?
11:24How you like me now?
11:26Racing to get ahead of their skimming team hot on their hooves.
11:30Who's the gaffer?
11:31Oh, Matthew.
11:32Matthew over there.
11:33Matthew, what are you hoping to get done today then?
11:35Upstairs boarded today.
11:36Ready for the skimmers coming in the morning.
11:37By 11 o'clock tonight we should be well on.
11:39Well on.
11:40Thanks so much for coming down.
11:42Today was spectacular.
11:45Over 100 people went in and out of that house today.
11:49Those lads from Donegal, they're going to be here till 11 tonight on day one,
11:53just to get that ready for skimmers tomorrow.
11:56Our targets for the next couple of days are vital to hit.
12:00We need a roof in that ICF structure.
12:02That can slip because if that slips, everything internally slips.
12:06Big build in a little house for a very special boy.
12:12And that same boy has charmed our Crusaders into serious speed.
12:17So Team Sparks are chasing it.
12:19OK.
12:20Under a bit of pressure today for sure.
12:21In every way.
12:22How are you on SWA?
12:23The slabbing crew turned up at about 7 o'clock this morning,
12:26so to be honest with you, we weren't ready for them.
12:30We had all hands on deck.
12:32David!
12:33David!
12:34David!
12:35Jesus!
12:38Now.
12:39I'm worried about you.
12:40We're under a bit of pressure.
12:41What's the pressure?
12:42Slabbers.
12:43And they're everywhere.
12:46Like ants.
12:47He had a bit of a mini stroke last night when the boys came in,
12:49and the boys started firing plasma all over the place.
12:51The slabbers from Donegal, they probably arrived a little bit early.
12:54And that put the sparks out a bit.
12:56She's moving, isn't she?
12:57Moving very fast.
12:58She is moving, yeah.
12:59So everyone's very excited to get it done.
13:01That's all it is.
13:02Off to meet the other gaffer, Albert.
13:04We're targeting pouring the ICF structure now here at the back of the house.
13:07We've got about 50 meters cubed, so just shy of two trucks.
13:10Fill up a third of the way, then second time around,
13:13and then you come back to your final time around up to the top.
13:15There's a time pressure with it.
13:16You need to get it as quick as you can and get it poured in so it doesn't go hard.
13:19Wham bam.
13:20Wham bam.
13:21I love a bit of pressure.
13:22A bit of pressure.
13:23Would you be used to this level of urgency and stress?
13:28I think that's, look, that's the name of the game of construction.
13:30It's always a kind of, it's a pressure kettle.
13:34Everyone's rowing in from the neighbors and such.
13:37It's just a reflection of how beautiful and lovely the family are.
13:39Everyone's dying to get stuck in.
13:40It is great, and it feels so good, everyone's talking about it.
13:47I'm a local lad, and I'm friends with the family an awful long time.
13:50They walked me holidays around to build.
13:52I just felt they needed to do something to help them out.
13:55He's a community boy, and the community love him.
13:58He's so positive.
13:59It's actually inspiring for an adult to look at a kid like that.
14:02Smile that would brighten up around, and a lovely, lovely little gentleman.
14:07How do you know the family?
14:09I have had the privilege of being Caden's class teacher for the last two years.
14:14How is he favored in the class?
14:18So I probably get emotional now.
14:19Everybody knows him as probably the bravest boy I've ever met in my life.
14:23After surgeries, before surgeries, he's always smiling.
14:26Caden had four-hour operation, and he came home that evening.
14:30The way he bounces back is unreal.
14:32If it's not his wrist, it's his feet. If it's not his feet, it's his spine.
14:36What do you make of all the volunteers?
14:38It just means so much to us and all my family.
14:41The school teachers here volunteer, and it's just so overwhelming.
14:46What made you want to come down and volunteer?
14:48In spite of everything he's had to put up with, he came in and he gave his best every day.
14:53So I thought, well, you know what? He's worked so hard for me.
14:57I've got to get in and do a bit of hard graft for him.
15:00That's what you need in this life. People doing things for others.
15:03The men are wonderful. The women are wonderful. I even offered them a bed if they wanted.
15:07God, it's so going to change the life forever, isn't it?
15:11Like little Caden. Bless him, he's going to get a bit of independence back.
15:14Every kid deserves a little bit of luck, you know, but it's just great that it's Caden's right.
15:20Ah, so tidy. This is going so well. Isn't it? See where this is going? It's called foreshadowing.
15:30There's a structure wall behind me here that didn't come out.
15:34The kitchen runs all the way to this line here.
15:37Between Clary and David spotted it when we were looking at where we were going to put the kitchen.
15:40We discussed it yesterday, but it was only when I was walking around.
15:43I was like, that wall's still there. This needs to come out.
15:45We were scratching our heads going, oh, yeah, that one seemed to be missed,
15:47and we were adamant it wasn't on the drawing.
15:49It was always on the drawing. There's the living proof.
15:51It's on the drawing. It needs to go.
15:53Time is of the essence. The kitchen's here at 8 a walk in the morning.
15:56The kitchen's here in the morning. We're holding up the first floor with this wall.
15:59So it's about how we now navigate that as a problem.
16:02We'll do temporary propping just to support the first floor
16:05while we take out the block work wall behind me,
16:07and then we'll put in a steel post, which will be a permanent support.
16:10Keith. Yeah, Baz.
16:12You have to fill me in on what's going on, man.
16:14This wall's coming down.
16:15Did we forget about that?
16:16The wall's forgotten.
16:17What's forgotten about?
16:22That sound near that?
16:24They had a little coffee break, and then they're back.
16:28As loud as ever.
16:31It's lovely.
16:35Back in Kilinarden, it's pollutions, not solvums, are we?
16:38You know what I mean.
16:39But the volunteers are out and forced building an accessible home for Caden.
16:44We've got the windows going in.
16:46We're going to put a couple of problems where the openings aren't wide enough.
16:51We have the issue now that the new door that goes into the courtyard is too big to get into the house.
16:57So we've got to figure out how we're going to get a 2.4 frame in through the corridor. That's 2.1.
17:06Enter designer Kerry to survey the progress. Or not.
17:10Nice kitchen.
17:11Kitchen's arrived, but we're not ready for the kitchen to be installed.
17:16This should be sink, dishwasher, cooker, units all the way along, but we have a kitchen on a pallet.
17:24It's not even slabbed.
17:27I haven't even first fixed the kitchen yet to allow the lads to fit the kitchen, to put on the slabs like it's mint.
17:34We'll get that kitchen in.
17:37We're very, very behind.
17:40Think we've ever been that far behind on a kitchen on any bills so far?
17:45Tomorrow. Tomorrow. It has to. It has to. It has to. It has to.
17:48Tomorrow.
17:49The kitchen needs to be in place for the guys to come and measure for the countertop, and then they need to go away and cut it.
17:54We need to cut round all the sockets, come back, bits it.
17:57If you say you're not stressed, well then you're lying.
17:59Getting a bit anxious. We're keeping to the plan, but things are sticking the head up now that we didn't foresee.
18:04I don't mind the pace.
18:05Need to get this ready.
18:06Yeah.
18:07Yeah.
18:08It's fast. It's go, go, go. We're used to go, go, go.
18:10Doors in, doors out again. Cluster.
18:12This is another notch.
18:17There's a lot happening.
18:18One item at a time that will address.
18:20You'll have to keep your sense of humour.
18:22What?
18:23It will be finished and it'll be done. Why?
18:25Because it has to be.
18:26It's too important not to get it done. It's just...
18:29Might be a bit more stressful than usual.
18:31We'll be here till all hours.
18:32Gonna be a late one tonight, I think.
18:34This morning was the first time I've slept to my alarm at half five in a long time.
18:39So yes, I'm tired.
18:45Well, while all in Tala are tearing their hair out, me and my locks are off to chill with Caden in his temporary mobile home away from home.
18:54A gift from a family friend for the next nine days.
18:58How are you?
18:59How's the story?
19:06Any questions you want to ask me first?
19:08Let me use my half ear brain real quick.
19:14What's the biggest obstacle in the house for you?
19:16Probably the stairs.
19:19They're like my worst enemy.
19:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:23What do you like about gaming?
19:27Friends.
19:28You hook up with friends when you're gaming?
19:30Yep.
19:33Ow!
19:34You want to make him laugh and smile as much as possible.
19:36He's just got a very infectious face.
19:39Yes!
19:41Yes!
19:42Oh, you got it.
19:50Wait.
19:51Did I?
19:52One, two, three, four.
19:53What?
19:54I've never seen that.
19:55Stupid game.
19:57Anyway.
19:58I was.
19:59It's fixed.
20:02How were you after your operations?
20:04I either go home or I'm in the hospital for like 500 million days, I feel like.
20:08Like sometimes when I'm going to surgery, I just feel like today I'm going to die.
20:12Really?
20:13Yeah.
20:14Yeah.
20:15Like I just feel like, yeah, I'm going to die today.
20:18You've had one in your back, right?
20:19So that's made you kind of sit up straighter.
20:21Oh no, I didn't just have one in my back.
20:23I had like 50,000 in my back.
20:26Really?
20:27Yeah.
20:28Who's the soft touch?
20:29There's always one who's a softer touch.
20:30I think it's more like my mam.
20:32Yeah.
20:33Yeah.
20:34I'm just like a quiet kid, I am.
20:35You'd say mass right now.
20:36You're a quiet kid.
20:37You are not a quiet kid.
20:38You are the opposite of a quiet kid.
20:41Other kids looking at you on telly and maybe they're going through tough times or they have disabilities.
20:47Is there any advice you give to them?
20:49Try your best, kid.
20:50Try your best, kid.
20:51Yeah.
20:52That makes sense.
20:53That works though.
20:54Even though you're going through a tough time like I am, just never give up.
20:59You'll do it eventually.
21:01Got to go back to size with all those hairy sweaty men.
21:05Do I want to be there?
21:09But trying your best, kids, and not giving up is personified with these plasters on site.
21:16Everyone seems a bit under pressure today, are they?
21:18They are, but the plasters come to save it.
21:20We'll be here all night, so we will.
21:22Yeah, you think?
21:23It's keep going through the night and it needs to be dry for tomorrow.
21:25We must be wrecked at this station.
21:26We are wrecked, actually.
21:27But we're just planning it on us to keep going.
21:30I think it's a bit bigger than anyone appreciates it.
21:33It's just, it got away from us a small bit.
21:36Just, there's so much happening.
21:43We're under pressure.
21:44We're under pressure.
21:45Tell Uncle Bash.
21:46Okay.
21:48The kitchen was meant to start yesterday.
21:51We're under pressure to get that in.
21:55This is very familiar to me.
21:58What's going on?
22:01Kitchen.
22:02Kitchen?
22:03Yes.
22:04Or the lack thereof.
22:05Yesterday we were a day behind.
22:06Yeah.
22:07I'd say we've clawed back most of it.
22:09Really?
22:10Yeah.
22:11People seem very, very busy.
22:12Look at even Walter.
22:13I've never seen Walter working.
22:14I've always seen him around.
22:15But this?
22:16Yeah, the pressure's on.
22:17The pressure is on.
22:18Could we all stop saying we're under pressure?
22:20Unless we're going to leap into scenes like a Marvel hero.
22:23They are going to be seriously under pressure for the next couple of days.
22:26They can't slip behind anymore on this programme.
22:29One hour of happiness.
22:32It's like caffeine for the soul.
22:34You're all working very hard.
22:36I feel like you need a bit of a pep.
22:37Do you need a bit of a pep?
22:39Yes, you do!
22:41And to add that well-needed pep, please welcome local League of Ireland heroes, Shamrock Rovers.
22:48With Roberta Lopez, Aaron McNiff and Hooperman.
22:51Hooperman?
22:52Who is he?
22:53Who knows?
22:54We'll never know.
22:55Everyone's under a lot of pressure.
22:56But the question is, who deals with pressure the best?
22:59Is it the Dubs?
23:00Yeah?
23:01Or is it the Colchies?
23:02I want to welcome you to the Steel Toe DIY SOS Put Em Under Pressure Penalty Shootout!
23:06Aaron is going to lead the rest of the country.
23:08And Pico will lead the Dubs.
23:09If Pico had the penalty were they?
23:10Right, okay.
23:11This is how it's going to work.
23:12You're going to take this ball.
23:16Up around here.
23:17Hooperman is going to be here distracting you.
23:18Sharon's in goal.
23:19You'll get one shot.
23:20Who is it?
23:21Who is it?
23:22Who is it?
23:23Who is it?
23:24Is it the Colchies?
23:25I want to welcome you to the Steel Toe DIY SOS Put Em Under Pressure Penalty Shootout!
23:27If you want to bequent, you'll get to the team with a game.
23:28You're going to take this ball.
23:29Up around here.
23:30Look, it's good.
23:31Around there!
23:32Hooperman is going to be here distracting you.
23:34Sharon's in goal.
23:37You'll get one shot!
23:39Oh!
23:40Oh!
23:41Right?
23:44And then the next player will go!
23:46To add nuance to nonsense, the TALA Marching Band have brought tequila.
23:51Well, in brass form anyways.
23:54Tequila!
23:55Tequila.
23:56I don't like to pat myself on the back, but, oh yes, that was a great idea.
24:03Sharon in gold, she's legend, isn't she?
24:07She's very good.
24:09Go on, Melina.
24:10Take it.
24:12Oh!
24:13What made you want to help out and lift the spirits?
24:16We just seen the product that was going on here in the community and being a big part of talent, Sean McRose.
24:21I think it was just important just to show our faces and try and help out whenever we can.
24:24My daughter's actually got additional needs.
24:27When you see so many people come together and work as one to reach a certain goal for a family and a special little boy, it's brilliant to see.
24:33It came down to you two in the end.
24:35Aaron!
24:35Oh, it's all in the hands of the guards now.
24:38Boo!
24:41Oh!
24:42Here we go, Pico.
24:46Don't mind them! Don't mind them! Don't mind them!
24:48Don't mind them!
24:51Oh, yeah!
24:51I said to our team just before we started that, you know, if Pico's in front of goal, we're safe enough, so.
24:59I'm sad to say the winners on this day happen to be the rest of the country.
25:06Did the Kulchis deserve to win?
25:13Yeah, maybe they did on this occasion, yeah.
25:16A few hours of Kip later and the Dubs and the Kulchis reunite for a new day with one target to be hit head on.
25:24I had a number of plaster show up this morning from Donegal, on site for 6am, skimming straight away.
25:31Upstairs, we've got flooring going down in the two bedrooms, and we have painters on site.
25:38It was a late night last night, early start today.
25:41Coming into this afternoon, we'll be back on track.
25:44Great show volunteers and Sunkratarkasso, that's helped.
25:56But there's still so, so much to be done.
26:00And even though it's a close shave, there's no want for warriors.
26:06We've had a lot of people here on site today, and it's a phenomenal response for over bank holiday weekend.
26:11But another issue pokes its pesky head.
26:14We need to keep on schedule, we need this landscaping to start tomorrow.
26:17They need 16 tonne of concrete gravel, we don't have it.
26:21Bank holiday weekend, stores are closed.
26:23Arthur, how are you getting on?
26:25A lot of calls will have to be made in the next hour.
26:27I need about 16 tonne, we have to get it done.
26:29No access to the house, I need it in the next hour.
26:32I wouldn't be asking, but we are under serious pressure.
26:34I'm your man for serious pressure release, I know how it works.
26:37We need air or fire, we need grits on, we need builds on.
26:39We need to go to the old stone.
26:41Hold on, I'll get them something sweet.
26:43These buns get you anything you want.
26:46Roger buns.
26:50I need a hero.
26:52Easy.
26:53This is you, is it?
26:54I modelled that one myself, actually.
26:56That's the 804, yes.
26:57That's what I taught, ready to rock.
26:5916 tonnes of gravel delivered on a bank holiday and a small bag of pixie dust thrown in.
27:05Tick.
27:06As you can only imagine, I'm more than happy to head back down to the Wexford coast to meet Sinead in a family favourite hideout.
27:18This is nice, isn't it?
27:21It's lovely.
27:21I could do this.
27:22This is a lot nicer than the building site I just came from.
27:25I'd say so.
27:25I can tell you.
27:26I can tell you.
27:27Being a mum on its own is a 24-hour non-stop job anyway.
27:32Yeah.
27:33But then on top of that being a carer, was there a lot of stuff you had to learn?
27:37Yeah.
27:37When Caden was first born, he wasn't bottle fed.
27:40He was NG fed.
27:41He couldn't swallow properly.
27:42Explain that to me.
27:43Which was the tube down the back of his throat.
27:45I had to learn how to do that.
27:47And that was horrible.
27:48Where do you learn things like that?
27:49You have to go to Cumberland Hospital and learn it all from me like.
27:53It's my second home.
27:54When you were pregnant, at what stage did you know there might be complications?
27:59The scans were showing up that his hands and feet were turned in.
28:03And they were saying, we don't think he's going to survive.
28:09I'm sorry.
28:10Is that all right?
28:11No, it's all right.
28:12Is that all right?
28:13Honestly.
28:14It feels like yesterday I was only there in my arms.
28:16Every time I talk about it, I just cry sorry.
28:18It just has this smile.
28:19It's infectious.
28:20It's just amazing.
28:22He's only out of recovery when he's asking, can he get back into his chair and go on a walk down to the vending machine?
28:27He's amazing.
28:28I'm so, so lucky with him.
28:30His legs are mobile, right?
28:32Yeah.
28:32I was told he'd never walk.
28:35But I think he's that determined.
28:37He had major surgery done on his feet last year.
28:41After the surgery, he just looked at the doctor and went, so I can walk now, won't I?
28:45And that breaks your heart.
28:47One day I'd love to see him walking down the road.
28:50It's very weird.
28:51And it's hard.
28:52Is there a lot of unknowns with his condition?
28:54Yeah.
28:54I don't know everything about it.
28:56I've never met anyone with his condition.
28:58Yeah.
28:59There's just so many questions about his condition and what does the future look like?
29:03Getting this opportunity that DIY SOS are after giving us.
29:07It's like when they're locked out ten times over.
29:11Like, I don't think anyone will understand how much this is going to change Caden's life.
29:17And I can't wait to see him grow up in the house now.
29:20Like, it's going to be amazing.
29:21That's the best part.
29:24Can't wait.
29:27Deck chair.
29:28Understood the assignment.
29:32It's countdown on the Kilnardyn site as young Caden O'Connor is coming home in just a couple of days.
29:38And the paint team are rocking and rolling.
29:41Nearly 11 o'clock and I'm seven coffees in so I'll try to slow it down a little bit.
29:48It's going to be another long day.
29:50I think as we go into day seven, day eight, we'll be bringing our sleeping bag.
29:56The key item today, I think, is getting the external works moving.
29:59Hey, Ronan.
30:00You're the man of the hour.
30:01How has it gone?
30:02Baz, how are you doing?
30:02I'm really good.
30:03I'm really good.
30:04How's the garden going?
30:05The garden's going really well.
30:06We've done three little gardens, very practical.
30:09He can go down in his wheelchair on his own.
30:11What we're trying to do is trying to make it very easy to maintain and good looking.
30:15So I think we've done all that.
30:17Talking of good looking, what made you want to work with me?
30:23Slight problem.
30:25We have a dishwasher, but we don't have space for it.
30:29We have a bench to go in and because the space is a premium,
30:31if we don't have this L-shaped bench, we can't utilize the seating area.
30:34My thought process is if we have a pop-up for a washer-dryer over here,
30:39integrate it over here, and then everyone's happy,
30:41and we have everything, and we still have a big seating area.
30:44Everything is going great.
30:45Yeah?
30:45Oh, sorry.
30:46We got a second.
30:47A bit of a dishwasher issue, and I was wondering, but I'm not a plumber,
30:52could we not put it beside the washer-dryer
30:53and then utilize the pop-ups that are there for the water and the electricity?
30:57We've had to change the kitchen around.
30:59Kerry wants to move the dishwasher,
31:01so we have to rewire and replumb and get that in.
31:04Dishwasher is now going onto this wall.
31:06We've no plumbers.
31:08We had them this morning.
31:09I had breakfast this morning, Albert.
31:11That's not helping anything.
31:12Day seven and a half.
31:12Where are they now?
31:13Yeah.
31:14We're practically trying to find them.
31:15Is that how it's in a plumber?
31:17The shout-out for plumbers drills loud across the Tala Valley.
31:24Are you tormented with the noise next door?
31:27Well, it is noisy, but I'm not tormented.
31:30They're great neighbors.
31:31Where would you get the little fella?
31:33I know.
31:34He's a ticket.
31:35He's gas.
31:35He's gas.
31:36Something else.
31:37What this has done has helped him to be, as he grows into adulthood,
31:43he'll be in his own home, and all of you have made that possible.
31:46Just what I would like to say, thank you.
31:49You're no stranger to volunteering yourself, are you?
31:52I see awards out there.
31:53What's that award for?
31:54Lifetime volunteer for my services with victim support.
31:59I loved it.
32:01You know, and it's great to think that you have helped somebody.
32:03What do you think those volunteers will go home with?
32:07They'll go home with self-satisfaction, I would say.
32:10What they will leave is we'll have a restore in human nature.
32:16I have the luxury of being able to sit around and watch other people working.
32:20But when you see all the volunteers, the time they give up for nothing more than to help little Caden,
32:28it just reminds you how important volunteering is.
32:32I can't explain the feeling that I have just to be here, you know, to say I've done something.
32:39It's nice to give back, so it is, and look, hopefully, touch wood, if any of us were sick,
32:44hopefully someone would help us out.
32:45When the lads were saying that, we're on DIY SOSO's honours.
32:48Well, I believe in karma, so if we do something good for someone, it'll come back to me.
32:52It makes you just see the good that people want to give.
32:55It's great the way that everybody pulls together.
32:57The sense of accomplishment at the end of it, that you were involved in a selfless act, is just amazing.
33:03We're getting down to the wire now on the second last day.
33:09So much great work done, but a hell of a lot to do.
33:14Today is get in, get out, really.
33:16We've got painting, we've got second fix joinery.
33:20Today, it's probably one of the busiest days on site because all the fitted furniture goes in.
33:24It's pretty manic.
33:25All the joiners are here today, so it's push, push, push on that front.
33:28Eight different joiners doing eight different parts of the house, which is all bespoke.
33:34It's going to be pretty full on.
33:35How are you feeling? Nervous?
33:37Yeah.
33:37The kitchen's still not finished.
33:38We tried to install the upper units and...
33:42Technical turn is, it just kind of went a bit Pete Tongue, I think.
33:46So we had to take them off again.
33:48While most of us have our heads down looking at the straight ahead,
33:52architect David has his head in the sky.
33:56We did miss one detail.
33:57The roof light above us, that's the wrong shape.
34:01It's meant to be a circular skylight.
34:02It's now a square opening underneath.
34:04Yeah.
34:04Yeah.
34:05As you pass through the building, you pick up on this circle above your head,
34:08and as you pass through the bedroom, you pick up another circle at the back wall.
34:12So it's all front of house talking to the back of house, so it's all cohesive.
34:16That's the idea.
34:16And without it, we don't have that.
34:18I knew that was meant to be a circular skylight.
34:20Yeah.
34:22But at the time, we didn't have the bodies to do it, so I made it square.
34:25You made it square.
34:26I made it square.
34:26Yeah.
34:27And then the architect came in and got all architected.
34:29And he said, it's non-negotiable.
34:30Non-negotiable?
34:31Non-negotiable.
34:31Did he say those words?
34:32He said, non-negotiable.
34:33This has to happen.
34:34I didn't think anything was non-negotiable, but...
34:36So, it has to be done.
34:39Square holes in round spaces is not the only non-negotiable.
34:43Now, Caden's bathroom floor has been ripped up.
34:46A gully redirection.
34:47Like, that's what we need.
34:50We've had a change of design, so we're moving the shower waste back out from the wall.
34:55So, I really need to put swallowing in towards the wall.
34:57Okay.
34:58And now we're putting a sense for the bully.
35:00It's getting dirty down there, isn't it?
35:01Who's that down there?
35:02I can't see.
35:02Damien.
35:03Damien, you're right, man.
35:04Oh, you want me to be positive?
35:07Okay.
35:08I'm positive it's very much not going to plan.
35:14And I'm very smiley about it, because that's what I do.
35:17I just smile on.
35:24Tomorrow is the day where Kerry comes in and dresses the place.
35:30You're not dressing any of that.
35:33Any of it.
35:33Nothing is ready to be dressed in there.
35:36There's just so much work to be done.
35:42But the work is done, and hordes of heroes grafted through the midnight hour to dawn o'clock.
35:50Extraordinary.
35:51Caden's bathroom.
35:52The gully was installed last night late, so the tiles have gone down.
35:565, 10.
35:57A lot of hours are put in from everybody.
36:00Everyone's exhausted, but everyone's still got a smile on their face.
36:02I was told that I get this warm, fuzzy feeling.
36:05Surprise!
36:06So far, it hasn't been warm and fuzzy.
36:09It's been go, go, go.
36:12Kitchen is still being installed, so a bit anxious about that.
36:17Ah, look, we're getting there.
36:18It's a bit manic at the minute.
36:19There's people everywhere.
36:20We're up against it.
36:21We have to give Kerry and her team as much time as possible, but we're still in their way.
36:25It's a bit chaotic.
36:26It's just moving people out of the way from painting.
36:28At the moment, it's about freeing no barriers to the painters.
36:31Once the painter is in, I'm happy.
36:35The rollover crew have circled around to the roof light for the fix.
36:39I hope.
36:40The plan yesterday was to form the opening in the skylight.
36:44What we wanted was square going to circle, but now we have square going to circle going
36:50to square.
36:51Must have got lost in translation, communication, whatever's going on being last day.
36:56It's your call.
36:57If it is or was my call.
36:58You fix it.
36:59Yeah.
37:00Too late at the stage, because up where it is, it's bang in the middle of the wallpaper
37:03going down the end.
37:04This was in a different room or in a different position in the house.
37:07Yeah.
37:08I'd say maybe.
37:08This is in round zero.
37:11I think if we paint the bottom of it white and the inside of it red, that will kind of
37:16make that element kind of a lot punchier, so it should help.
37:19But I personally think it looks well.
37:21If ever there was a time to flee that frantic sight, it's now.
37:26So I career up the Dublin Mounds to meet champion dad, Ron.
37:30We meet at the Hellfire Club, his hotspot from back in the day.
37:35When's the last time you were up at the Hellfire Club?
37:36Oh, it would have been when Sinead was pregnant on Cade.
37:42In both your families, there was no history of any?
37:45No history of nothing.
37:47Like when we first found out.
37:49My biggest concern at the time was just Sinead.
37:51She just broke my heart when she found out.
37:53What role did you come fall into?
37:55It's one of those where sometimes you don't know what to do.
37:59Think back and I go, my God, from day one, how did we do that?
38:02How did we get to today?
38:04Like, well, you just do it.
38:07When Caden was born then?
38:09Delighted that he could breathe on his own.
38:11He could do everything on his own.
38:13What does it feel like to see him go through that many surgeries?
38:16Oh, it's heartbreaking.
38:18It's a feeling of hopelessness, like, that you can't help.
38:20I'd always say, let me take that operation.
38:22Like, I'll do it.
38:24But you can't, you know?
38:26Life doesn't work like that.
38:27It is stressful, like, you're trying to, like, do your best for him, like, and you're questioning yourself.
38:32Am I doing my best, like?
38:34But Sinead always was.
38:35Sinead was just, she really is the best mother that you could have hoped for.
38:40The house, the main struggle in the house.
38:42This bedroom upstairs.
38:43That you're picking him up probably seven, eight times a day.
38:45Isn't that the whole reason behind trying to make the house more accessible?
38:50So he has that for you.
38:51Yeah.
38:52You know?
38:52And he'll love it.
38:53He will love it.
38:54He will love it.
38:55You know?
38:55Yeah.
38:55To fly from one end of the house to another in a chair without having to get out, that'll be just amazing for him.
39:00Amazing.
39:01A lot of sweaty volunteers down there.
39:03Ah, my God.
39:05There is no words to say to people for what they've done.
39:09It's just absolutely amazing.
39:12A gift, like, people that you don't know, that don't know Cade and all that.
39:16It restores your faith and the human race it does.
39:19It's just brilliant.
39:19There's a place in heaven for people like that.
39:22While we had the pleasure of seeing the woods and the trees, back on site, the weary warriors need a last minute dig out to see the wood from the trees.
39:35There's a good bit of work on the external here.
39:37So I know it's a small space, but small spaces can be more challenging,
39:40because you can only get so many resources into these small spaces.
39:44Because it's a wheelchair, of course, so it's going to come out near enough level,
39:47so when he comes out, he's okay coming out of the door,
39:49and then we'll ramp off down to a level on the outside.
39:52A magic Metallica creation, complete with lights, is installed in the rear garden,
39:57and some fancy specimen plants find their forever home.
40:01Acer Japonica, over here, please.
40:04Hello.
40:05Three, two, one.
40:06We have a day, so it's not about how long we think it'll take.
40:13Give us a hand to lift us, a big strong man.
40:15What is this?
40:15A Japanese maple.
40:17Three, two, one, go.
40:19Good God, lads.
40:20How are we doing time-wise with everything?
40:22We're behind.
40:23Are we?
40:23But we're going to pick up, don't worry.
40:24Okay.
40:25Let's all go.
40:25They are still working hard.
40:31The more we ask, the more they give.
40:33People are wrecked, but very, very tired.
40:36Still not finished, so it's going to be a mad night.
40:40Genuinely, this is down to the wire.
40:42No bedtime story for Albert's kids, again.
40:45Like all the other kids who donated their parents over the last nine days.
40:50Night night.
40:50Every single person who signed into that volunteer tent to come in and get involved, and it's been brilliant.
40:55It's not done just yet, and they'll probably feel quite low right now, but I know that tomorrow is when they get paid.
41:06The bit that I love is looking at the family coming out of this building, and all the tired heads, all the volunteers, all the tradespeople, and the sense of pride will be unbelievable.
41:16It hits people then.
41:18Right now, it's probably not feeling worth it.
41:20But tomorrow, it'll feel very, very much worth it.
41:26Love that sound.
41:29Can we get this started?
41:30Where are they?
41:31Oh, I'm so excited.
41:32Can't wait.
41:32Can't wait.
41:33The O'Connors are coming home.
41:35In your own time.
41:37And I can't wait to show them their astonishing abode.
41:40Voila!
41:41Oh, my God.
41:42Look at the garden.
41:42Oh, my God.
41:43Oh, my God.
41:44It's absolutely beautiful.
41:50Do you love walking?
41:51Yeah, it's all right.
41:52Yeah.
41:53Yeah.
41:54Oh, it's lovely.
41:55I can't get over it.
41:56This is on your front yard.
41:57You haven't even gone inside yet.
41:59I haven't even gone inside yet.
42:00Oh, yeah.
42:00And I'm already overwhelmed.
42:02He's going to be flying in and out.
42:05And subtle but central adjustments to the stairs and hall mean he'll be flying inside very soon.
42:10This is beautiful.
42:14That picture on the wall is a radiator.
42:18Oh, my God.
42:18You're heating it?
42:19Oh, my God.
42:19Yeah.
42:20That is just crazy.
42:24Oh, my God.
42:26The heart of the home is now a light-filled hub with lots of turning room.
42:34Definitely worth the wait.
42:35This is not a house.
42:37It's like a different house completely.
42:39Just amazing.
42:43Well, all I said was if Caden had a bedroom and a bathroom downstairs, I'd be the happiest person in the world.
42:52I love that courtyard.
42:53It's very pretty.
42:54A courtyard and kill an egg.
42:56No, the notions.
42:57Very fancy.
42:58The notions.
42:59Caden, get out of the courtyard.
43:07I love it all.
43:09I love the colors.
43:10It's beautiful.
43:11It's like surreal.
43:12It's like I'm just waiting to wake up.
43:14Kerry's corner scheme is a big hit.
43:16Oh, look.
43:18Oh, my God.
43:19Oh, my God.
43:20That is brilliant.
43:22It's all hidden.
43:23The bins.
43:24Hidden.
43:24It's the simple things, isn't it?
43:26It's the simple things in life.
43:29Well, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
43:32Or so Leonardo said.
43:34That's Da Vinci, not DiCaprio.
43:36This is crazy.
43:37This is absolutely amazing.
43:40Just sit out there, have a coffee.
43:41I can't do that, and be quartered.
43:43Sorry to drag you out of the courtyard.
43:44Do you want to go see Caden's room?
43:46A gamer's dream world.
43:55I love it.
43:57Oh, he's going to love it.
43:59He's going to love it.
44:00Oh, brilliant.
44:01Oh, it's brilliant.
44:03Oh, it's brilliant.
44:09Yeah, he has everything he needs now.
44:11So he can thrive.
44:15And the place comes right in.
44:16Nice.
44:17It comes right in.
44:19Just to let you know, the whole house is voice activated.
44:23It's to give him as much freedom as possible.
44:28And also to give you a bit of time, you know?
44:35I can't wait for him to see this room.
44:38See the house.
44:40He's going to love it.
44:43Whoa.
44:44Very excited.
44:46I'm also buzzing for Caden to see the house.
44:50Excuse me.
44:51Is this my house?
44:52I walk in the wrong house.
44:54It is your house, man.
44:56It's all your house.
44:58New toaster.
45:00Got a new kettle.
45:03Whoa, whoa, whoa.
45:05Activate Caden's door.
45:16Wow.
45:17Curiosity got the permit, so I'm going to press it.
45:20It's light.
45:21Ta-da.
45:22Happy?
45:23Yeah.
45:24Will this work for you?
45:26Yes.
45:27Want to see something cool?
45:28What?
45:28Look at this.
45:29This looks just like a little weird remote, right?
45:31Yeah.
45:31Not from a kelly.
45:32How did you do that?
45:33How did you do that?
45:34No way.
45:35And now you think, I'm locked in now.
45:39The automated door is a big hit with our boy, and now he's off to the rear garden on his toe, Blarone.
45:45Do you feel like the house, there's more space for you?
45:47Yep.
45:48But the best thing is that all you have to call now.
45:50Now you can just go.
45:51You can go wherever you want, man.
45:52Yep.
45:53A lad of few words, but champion action's eldest boy Ethan loves his Liverpool spacious bedroom.
46:02I like it.
46:03I think it's fresh, isn't it?
46:04Yeah, I like it.
46:05I can't get the smile off my face, and it's horny.
46:09I can't get it off.
46:20Oh, my God.
46:23This is your bedroom.
46:26This is crazy.
46:28I feel like I'm not worthy of everything.
46:31This is beautiful.
46:32I'm standing in the old box room, like.
46:36This is like a very fancy hotel.
46:40It's exactly, yeah.
46:41It's absolutely amazing.
46:42You deserve it, like.
46:44I love it.
46:45Oh, my God.
46:46It's beautiful, isn't it?
46:47I absolutely love it.
46:59Oh, my God.
47:00Oh, my God.
47:01Oh, my God.
47:02Can you feel it?
47:04I can feel it.
47:05Oh, my God.
47:06I can feel it.
47:07I can feel it.
47:09I can feel it.
47:10I can feel it.
47:11I can feel it.
47:12I can feel it.
47:13It's fab.
47:15I'm lost for words.
47:17It's absolutely beautiful. I love it all just thanks everyone who who was involved. It's just beautiful
47:27And soon he will get to thank each and every one of the hundreds upon hundreds of these irrepressible
47:34Angels who created this truly astonishing accessible home for Caden and his family
