00:00Imagine you had the chance to build the home of your dreams in
00:04one of the most stunning countries in the world, New
00:07Zealand, taking your pick of its pristine beaches, rugged
00:12mountain ranges, untouched countryside or built up
00:16cityscapes that is kind of taking understated to the
00:20extreme. Where would you build on a clifftop? This is the life
00:25isn't it? In the mountains? Can you imagine living here? Or
00:33along the coast? Could not think of anything more fun. What would
00:38you build? A remote hideaway? This is the stuff dreams are made of
00:43an inner city sanctuary. You sleep so well in here. Well, stop
00:47imagining because I'm in New Zealand taking you to explore some
00:51of the country's most stunning locations. I'm Phil Spencer. This
00:57is New Zealand's Best Homes. Come with me. This is going to be
01:03fun. It's no surprise that in a country as stunning as this, Kiwis
01:11love to be connected to the outdoors, even when they're at
01:15home. Each of the properties I'm visiting today embraces that in
01:21their own unique way. Here, the gardens aren't just an added
01:26bonus. They are as important to the design as the homes
01:30themselves.
01:37I'm off to the country, just a couple of hours south of
01:40Auckland, to a place the locals call the mighty Waikato. It's
01:46known for its dairy industry and its beautiful green pastures. I'm a
01:50country boy at heart, so I'm really looking forward to today.
01:56So, it's somewhere down this drive.
02:03We really are in the back of Beyond. That's a five-year-old on a
02:06motorbike.
02:07The owners, one a builder, and the other a horse-mad interior
02:15designer, fell in love with a piece of rolling farmland, the perfect
02:19place for their home, garden, and horses.
02:22Stables House is a modern four-bedroom, 500-square-metre country home, set in
02:31beautiful manicured grounds. A series of gabled pavilions are inspired by the
02:38idea of traditional stables, and placed to enjoy that country
02:43outlook.
02:43Tarnay Cox was the architect, trusted by the couple, for this special
02:48project.
02:52Oh, look, I even get to park undercover in the shade. It's full of
02:56me.
02:56Oh, look.
03:04Looking pretty smart.
03:06Tarnay.
03:06Phil. How are we?
03:08Nice to meet you.
03:09Lovely to meet you.
03:09Yeah, you too.
03:10So, this is stables house. It doesn't look much like a stable.
03:14Forgive me for pointing the out of the office.
03:15It's true. Yep, it doesn't. There is stables here, though. I promise you.
03:20But yeah, certainly, an important part of the brief.
03:22Having the horses close by was a must. So, it was important. The
03:30stables were part of the house, both in design and location.
03:35This is the stables.
03:36Right, where it all began.
03:38Yeah.
03:41You said I had this loose idea that there was an arrangement of
03:43barns on a knoll farm.
03:46Well, like a farmyard.
03:47Like a farmyard, yeah.
03:48Because the farmyard barns wouldn't necessarily connect with one
03:51another one.
03:52That's right, yeah. They'd have sort of a functional arrangement,
03:54you know, of how they'd sit.
03:55So, and obviously, this building's important with the horses.
03:58It needs to work as a stable.
04:00So, that's why its location was really important.
04:03And then beating off that with the other ones as well.
04:07You know, first impressions really count.
04:09And the first impressions of coming out of the driver is,
04:11oh, this is going to be something.
04:13Yeah. Yeah, like you say, the trees and the drive and the hedging.
04:16Yeah. What fun.
04:19Now, I want to get inside.
04:22Look at that.
04:23Yeah.
04:26You're immediately kind of setting the tone.
04:29Yeah, I think just being able to come straight in,
04:31see an amazing view, you feel like you're really sort of flanked
04:34by those big sort of barn-type shapes.
04:37Beautiful. I'm following you.
04:39Where do we go?
04:42It's a kitchen lounge.
04:46It's the main room of the house.
04:50It's huge.
04:54A seven-metre-high stud.
04:57It's grand and unexpected.
05:00I love the contrast of the warm cedar with the black steel.
05:04Very, very beautiful.
05:05It certainly worked hard to try and create spaces.
05:08Like, when we sort of first came in,
05:09it's a little tighter, a little more intimate,
05:11and then sort of open up into these bigger spaces
05:14and get to capture that view slightly differently.
05:19That ginormous steel window, taking in that view,
05:24it's quite something.
05:26I'm just having to sort of pause for a moment here.
05:30Just take it all in.
05:30It frames the view so beautifully.
05:39Everything is so stunningly dark.
05:45Yeah, it's a lovely room to be in.
05:47The view, the fireplace, even the beautiful horses, there they are.
05:53The stars of the show.
05:55I mean, apart from the architecture,
05:57I can tell straight away that the interior design
06:00has been really well done.
06:01Yes.
06:03With the skills of both owners,
06:05the finishings are impeccable and incredibly tasteful.
06:09I love it.
06:13There was a lot of talk and effort put into making sure,
06:16again, it's a big space,
06:18making sure it had those intimate moments,
06:20the window seat areas where you sort of pulled in
06:22and made the space a little tighter.
06:23And that's Bronwyn's expertise too.
06:28And I guess it wouldn't happen very often in your work,
06:30when you're working and you're designing a space
06:34with the builder as a client
06:36and with the interior designer as the client.
06:38So, it's a really lovely benefit, you know,
06:41to have that happen right at the start.
06:54Beautiful, beautiful materials and colours.
06:57This is stunning.
06:58Yeah.
06:59That's quite a brave choice.
07:01Yeah, it was really fun being able to design a house
07:04where you had, you know, the owner being so invested in the interiorism,
07:08and very good at it, just being able to commit to some ideas
07:10that she really wanted to see happen as well.
07:12That is a mighty, mighty piece of style, isn't it?
07:14Yeah, it's amazing.
07:21Second kitchen is this?
07:22It is a bit of a scullery food prep.
07:25I'm sure the fruit always looks like that.
07:28Most often.
07:29Every time I've been here anyway, it's been like that.
07:31And then out here, this looks like another living room.
07:35It is, yeah, yeah.
07:36I mean, this is a full-on dining table and a full-on couch and the fire.
07:42It's reasonably exposed up here, so it's really important, too,
07:46that they had just outside spaces like this
07:48that were a little bit sheltered.
07:51And you could live in them, essentially.
07:53Absolutely.
07:54Enjoy a meal.
07:54Yeah.
07:55Or like the fire, put your feet up.
07:57That's right.
08:01Tell you what, the Kiwis, they're very serious
08:03about their indoor-outdoor living.
08:06I mean, here we have, effectively, an outdoor room.
08:09It's got couches and decorations and a big fire in it.
08:13It's got a really neat log stack.
08:16I don't know why I should be surprised about that.
08:18Everything's rather neat here.
08:20Yeah, this is done well, and I bet it gets used all the time.
08:31I mean, it's stunning inside, but actually coming out here,
08:34it's a very, very beautiful thing to look at, the size of that window.
08:38You really get to just appreciate some of the shapes
08:41and those big gable ends.
08:51That's what it's all about, being able to sit there
08:54and enjoy the view, enjoy the horses.
08:58It's just immaculate.
09:00It's just immaculate.
09:03I want one immediately.
09:06Tarnay, I'm serious.
09:11The house is impressive, but it's these immaculate gardens
09:15that just sets it off.
09:17I'm told the owners look after it themselves, too.
09:20I need to lift my game.
09:23The whole place is just meticulous, outside as well as inside.
09:30I mean, look at these, perfectly pruned, just beautiful.
09:38Even the tomatoes are being grown beautifully.
09:41The grapes, absolutely stunning, as they should be.
09:44The fruit, the carrots.
09:46I mean, look, it's just...
09:50If only I could live like this.
09:52I'm with architect, Tarnay Cox, at Stables House.
10:08So you can see all the way around.
10:09Yeah.
10:10A collection of beautiful, elevated barns
10:13connected by glorious glass walkways.
10:17So some of these spaces became really important
10:19just for connecting all of those, essentially.
10:21Yeah.
10:22Is this what...
10:23I've been learning architect-speak.
10:24Is this called a moment?
10:26It is a moment.
10:26It is.
10:27I knew I spotted that moment.
10:29Yeah.
10:30And then down this end?
10:35Guest toilet, yep.
10:39And then we're into the bedroom wings.
10:42The guest wing is made up of three bedrooms.
10:46Perfect for grown-up kids or friends to visit for a night.
10:49And smaller grandkids to stay whenever they want,
10:54which I'm told is a lot.
10:58And then another sort of small pavilion
11:00and an entertaining area.
11:02A small pavilion.
11:04Crikey.
11:11So this was fun too.
11:12It was like nice, creating another space to entertain here.
11:15So this looks like work.
11:18It is, yeah.
11:18Yeah, so at the moment, I think Bronwyn's...
11:20Headquarters.
11:21Yeah, a bit of a place to sort of fall back into
11:23and get some work done, so...
11:25And when you originally designed it,
11:27was it for the work side?
11:30Yeah, it wasn't originally.
11:32You could talk to Bruce about that, actually.
11:33I think there might have been a pool table in mind
11:35or something like that, but...
11:36Okay.
11:37It was more space that could be multi-use.
11:39Come to think of it,
11:40I never got my promised pool table either.
11:48It's probably my favourite spot in the whole house.
11:53Immediately, I'm feeling like I'm in the Mediterranean.
11:56Yeah.
11:57Italy or Spain or somewhere like that.
11:59It's a really lovely soft palette.
12:01And just a space that, again, sort of held so you can get out of the wind.
12:07It's sheltered, it's private.
12:09Yeah.
12:10It's beautifully, beautifully finished.
12:12Love the bricks.
12:14I mean, all the planting.
12:15Goodness me.
12:16Absolutely everything.
12:21Into the main suite, his and her wardrobes lead through
12:24to the beautiful bathroom, stone double basins,
12:28a walk-in shower room, and even its very own courtyard.
12:33Very generous bathroom.
12:34Yeah, sort of the hero of the space, really.
12:36Bruce and Bronwyn's ideas around what parts of the room
12:41they wanted to come through first.
12:46And the bedroom itself.
12:47I mean, the bathroom's not much smaller than the bedroom.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Which is actually kind of cool,
12:53because you wander around in the bathroom.
12:55Yeah.
12:56In the bed, you're just in bed.
12:57Yeah.
12:58And you're in bed, enjoying that.
13:04I've seen the house.
13:05Now time to meet these lucky horses and their owner, Bronwyn.
13:10Hello, Norma.
13:10Come on, Isa.
13:11You want all the carrots, do you?
13:12Yeah.
13:13Yes.
13:13Yes.
13:14But she's very, very lovable.
13:16And the grandchildren hop on her and ride her and everything
13:19like that, so she's lovely.
13:21Aren't you beautiful?
13:23Yeah.
13:23It's a beautiful spot you picked here.
13:26Yes.
13:27Yeah, like friends of ours approached us
13:29to see if we wanted to come and live here.
13:32Right.
13:32Naturally, I did, because I knew I could bring the horses here.
13:35Hmm.
13:36My husband wasn't too sure, so it took him a while
13:38to sort of settle into it.
13:40And when you first came here to the plot,
13:43what went through your mind?
13:44I think it was just the quietness and the elevation
13:47and looking out to the hut Kramatas.
13:49And on a clear, clear night, it's beautiful.
13:56We can see the glow of Auckland.
13:57It's just, it's quite peaceful.
14:00I'm, I'm, I'm a sucker for a country view and some horses.
14:04Yeah, I know.
14:05Yeah, and I love the land.
14:06Yeah.
14:07Well, I hear the bars open and Bronwyn's husband
14:13and the home's builder, Bruce, is pouring the drinks.
14:17Cheers.
14:18Cheers.
14:19Bruce.
14:20It's certainly a thing in the UK, the builder's house
14:23is always the one that's never quite finished.
14:25Oh, no, no.
14:26But that's not the case here.
14:27No.
14:28No, absolutely not.
14:29No, I like things finished, you know, I like things sorted.
14:32Yeah, I mean, this is sorted to the nth degree,
14:34right from the moment I turned in at the end of the drive.
14:37Yeah, yeah.
14:38To the moment, you know, you look round the house,
14:40which is absolutely beautiful.
14:44It's utterly, it's dreamy.
14:45It's comfortable and it's honest and it's lovely to live in.
14:49Like, I don't think I ever come back and I go,
14:52I wish I'd done that or I wish I'd done something different.
14:54And, you know, the grandchildren run around
14:56and nothing's precious about the house, which is what I wanted.
15:02We didn't want a home that was sort of like any unused spaces.
15:06Like, we use, although there's just two of us living in here,
15:09we use every room.
15:11There's no sort of...
15:13There's no dead space.
15:14No, there's no dead space.
15:15It's got, you know, it's got volume,
15:18but we use every space.
15:26Well, I'm going to raise a glass of all three of you.
15:30Genuinely, it's outstanding.
15:33Fantastic.
15:33And a real...
15:34A testament to having the three disciplines all work together.
15:38Mm.
15:39Congratulations.
15:39Oh, yes.
15:40Ooh, aren't you beautiful.
15:54They're very happy horses.
15:56Well, they should be, given that they were given priority.
16:00And their lodges, they've got the best spot.
16:03It was all about being able to see them.
16:08I've got to be honest, because I'm a bit blown away by this one.
16:10I really am.
16:11Yes, it is country living at its absolute finest, stunning rural setting, horses in the paddock,
16:21neatly trimmed hedges.
16:22You've got veggie patches and fruit trees.
16:25I mean, it's got it all going on.
16:27But I think what I hadn't thought through, or certainly hadn't anticipated,
16:32it's how the amalgamation of the three different disciplines can produce something which is so exquisite.
16:39And it's exquisite because they've all been there working on it.
16:42It's beautifully designed, it's incredibly well constructed and built.
16:47And then, of course, the interiors are absolutely stunning.
16:51This isn't just a piece of country living.
16:56It's a piece of paradise.
17:08Ah, the stunning Coromandel Peninsula.
17:12I have to say, it's fast become one of my favourite destinations.
17:18Just a couple of hours' drive from Auckland,
17:21its eastern coast is famed for charming seaside villages, secluded coves,
17:27and some of the most beautiful white sand beaches you'll find anywhere.
17:33I'm heading a bit off the beaten track today,
17:35and the roads are getting narrower, windy, and then they turn to gravel,
17:40which apparently is just the way that the locals like it.
17:43And it's here where the owner I'm meeting today fell in love with a piece of land
17:47that had clearly seen better days.
17:49And I'm told her passion to restore it back to native bush
17:53went hand in hand with designing a home worthy of this amazing sight.
17:58You come up here and look, look at that!
18:05Undisturbed natural beauty.
18:07Nobody on it.
18:09Well, there will be the softener, because it'll be me.
18:14Waimata Ruru is a timber home
18:16designed to harmonise with its surroundings.
18:20The main house is essentially one long room...
18:29..with guest suites at either end for visitors to stay.
18:34This tranquil retreat is the vision of owner and interior designer,
18:39Kristina Pickford.
18:44Kristina!
18:45Phil!
18:45Good morning.
18:46Good morning.
18:46What a spot.
18:47Lovely to have you here.
18:48Goodness me.
18:48Is that like your own beach?
18:50It's a public beach, but it's a Saturday and there's no one there.
18:53Nobody there.
18:54No.
18:54It's a hidden little secret.
18:56Well, it's hidden.
18:57I can't even see the house from here, but I'm liking your gate.
19:03How old is that tree, do you reckon?
19:04Well, we've been told Kaumatoa suggested it was 400 years old at least.
19:10It's beautiful.
19:11It's like a guardian.
19:13A guardian of the house?
19:14A guardian of the house.
19:15That's how I like to think about it.
19:16Where is the house?
19:18So the house, you have to journey up this path, Phil.
19:23It was a really intentional part of the house, actually.
19:26I wanted people to walk through the bush and for it to slowly unfold.
19:32OK.
19:32It's not just about the beach.
19:34And what's it like carrying the shopping up here?
19:41Sorry, I've got to ask.
19:42Come on.
19:43It's good for you.
19:45OK.
19:47I believe you.
19:51I've done this a few times now, but I still get a great sense of...
19:55It's almost nervousness and anticipation.
19:57What am I going to find behind this door?
19:59I'm pleased you do.
20:00Well, please.
20:04Look at that.
20:05I should be looking at your house.
20:10Look at your house, which is very beautiful, but look at that.
20:16It's breathtaking.
20:17It's so...
20:19It's sort of commanding.
20:21Those rocks.
20:22I really love looking at the headland and the rocks there, I feel like it's really intimate.
20:26Do you ever get any work done or do anything during the day?
20:28Do you just sit there?
20:29Yeah, there's some good spots to sit in and enjoy the view.
20:33Oh my goodness.
20:34Yeah.
20:35So tell me about the house.
20:37Who lives here?
20:38Well, this house is being built for Michael, my husband and I, so it's really the two of
20:43us.
20:44The house is really just dedicated to open living, there's no walls that go to the ceiling.
20:56And you can see there's not many doors.
20:58That's the main bedroom.
20:59So that's the main bedroom.
21:00And then it's completely open.
21:01Kitchen.
21:02Dining.
21:03Outdoor room.
21:04All enjoying that.
21:05Yeah.
21:06Calm down, Phil, let's see the house.
21:15Timber stairs lead to the kitchen and dining area.
21:21More glass, more light.
21:25What was here when you first came up here?
21:29The view, obviously, I mean, it's so...
21:31The view was here.
21:32Yeah.
21:33The land had previously been cleared and a lot of weeds had grown, so there was actually
21:38nothing in front of us here except for the large trees.
21:42Do you know straight away, right, that we're buying this?
21:47We did, actually.
21:48We did.
21:49Yeah, I'm not surprised.
21:50It was, we walked up this hill, we turned around and Michael and I looked at each other
21:54and said, this might be it.
21:58And finding a site like this, right on this beautiful beach.
22:05And it also happens to be for sale.
22:09Where do I sign?
22:13What brought it on, do you think?
22:15Yeah.
22:16We both just wanted a project.
22:17I was keen to plant trees and rehabilitate a bit of land.
22:21That was a bit of a driver.
22:22Had you been brought up in the countryside?
22:24I had been brought up in the countryside.
22:26But then lived in the city and wanted to get back?
22:28Yeah.
22:29Got it.
22:30Yeah, I think.
22:31It started to make sense.
22:32Yeah.
22:33It was a driver to get back to the land.
22:35Have you ever done anything like that before?
22:37No.
22:38Quite the ambitious undertaking, restoring the site's native bush and building a home that
22:47responded to the landscape.
22:51What was the brief?
22:52What did you, when you met with the architect, what did, what was your?
22:55Well, right from the beginning, it was really, really important that this house felt like
23:00it belonged to the area.
23:01It's clearly a really special piece of New Zealand's coastal environment.
23:08And we didn't want the house to overpower that.
23:12I wanted it to feel as though it was part of it, and it's a sloped section.
23:18So the obvious solution was to step the house coming down so it's soft in the landscape.
23:27So the home follows the contours of the land, cascading down the hill, creating a wonderful
23:33connection to the outdoors.
23:37The slight level changes from room to room feel effortless, both inside and out.
23:47My eyes are kind of going all over the place and lots of special pieces in your house.
23:51What's this?
23:53Stunning piece.
23:54This is a Belgian chocolatier's table.
23:58I've sourced various pieces, and then we've made sure the hard fit-out works around those pieces.
24:05So you owned this before you built the house?
24:07Yes.
24:08Yeah.
24:09And then design the kitchen around it.
24:10Okay.
24:11Gorgeous table.
24:12Likewise, this is a polished gym mat here.
24:14Of course.
24:15That was sourced.
24:16Every home should have one.
24:17Indeed.
24:18So I'm getting the feeling that the outside is as important to you as the inside.
24:34It is.
24:35You can't build a house without celebrating the landscape.
24:42And we've really worked hard to bring the landscape here back to life.
24:46And for it to be part of the whole thing.
24:50Yeah.
24:51We've planted everything you see here really, except for the big trees.
24:58Even the paths are beautiful.
25:00Yeah.
25:01That stone we source from a local quarry.
25:03Okay.
25:04So you get the colours of the landscape and it feels very much like it's part of the place.
25:09Yeah.
25:10Yeah.
25:11It's only from here that you can actually get to see the house.
25:15Yeah.
25:16You can clearly see the slope of the land and the house following.
25:25It wasn't just about building a beach house.
25:27It was about creating a whole environment.
25:30You really did find the spot, didn't you?
25:34Location, location, location.
25:35I think you might have got it.
25:37It's not bad.
25:38It's not bad.
25:39It is not bad.
25:40It is not bad.
25:45I hope you can genuinely enjoy Bonob AREN's vision and see it as well.
25:55Great.
25:56And on the globe I'm with Christina Pickford.
26:00I love the way it slopes with the land.
26:02Yeah, every space is on its own level.
26:06Exploring Waimaturulu, a beautiful home nestled in a perfect piece of bush on the Coromandel Coast.
26:16Down the slope we go.
26:21And then totally open to your voucher.
26:23Yeah.
26:24As we were designing the house on the different levels, it felt right that it was open and eliminate the doors.
26:34It works. And with only the two of you in the house, why not wait to go near the door?
26:38Absolutely.
26:41And there's skylight positioned above the bed so you can view the stars at night.
26:47Beautiful.
26:49The view from here, the view from the bed.
26:54Yeah.
26:55That Pahutukawa.
27:02Yes, I love that view, looking through the tree.
27:05It's really special.
27:06It's a very beautiful tree. Very beautiful beach.
27:09Yeah.
27:10That tree is actually loved by, we've got lots of owls here, native owls.
27:15Yeah.
27:16Warporks or Ruru.
27:17So the stream that runs down that we walked over, the little bridge, it's called Waimata and Ruru, the native owl.
27:24And the owls live in the tree.
27:26And the owls live in the tree.
27:28And come visit you.
27:29Yeah.
27:30And great that actually the owls weren't disturbed as you were building the house.
27:33No, they seem to have proliferated since the building back.
27:36There's more and more of them.
27:37Right.
27:38Yeah, they don't mind us being here, which is good.
27:40While the front of the house is full of light to reflect the beach, the back of the home is black to reflect the bush.
27:49There's no glass at all.
27:53Lovely texture.
27:54And the light coming from above that opens, which is beautiful.
27:58And a little hatch there for a secret little view of the bush.
28:04That's so cool.
28:05These quirky pocket windows allow for light and glimpses of the bush when you want it.
28:11I mean, I love being in the nature, so to be able to shower and enjoy it.
28:17Yeah.
28:18That's really lovely.
28:19I want one.
28:28So peaceful, which is a beautiful way to live.
28:30Yeah, it is a very, it is a lucky way to live.
28:34So this is, how do you describe this?
28:36Well, this is like an indoor, outdoor room.
28:38You sit here and light the fire.
28:40Yeah, the fire is beautiful.
28:42It's really nice.
28:43We spend lots of time in front of the fire.
28:56So this is a guest room in here.
29:01So it's kind of separate from the house, but connected.
29:03It is separate.
29:04Yeah.
29:05Again, it's so calming.
29:09You just, I just start speaking quietly.
29:12I love all the materials and there's been some serious craftsmanship.
29:17Yeah, this is all lime plastered.
29:19It's actually got some sand from the beach incorporated into it.
29:22just when your hand falls, you know.
29:24That's so nice.
29:31Tucked away here is the guest wing.
29:35You really, your immediate feeling that you are in the forest.
29:50It's lush.
29:51It's green.
29:52And you're just kind of at one with nature.
29:55It's beautiful.
29:56I love this.
29:59Where there would normally be a mirror.
30:04Open that in the morning and that's what you want to see.
30:08Native bush.
30:09Put a smile on your face first thing in the morning.
30:12It really does.
30:13It's beautiful.
30:16Sure.
30:17So, Roche and Aaron from Pax Studios work closely with lead architect, Rory Coford and Christina to bring this to life.
30:25Do you have a favorite part of the house?
30:27I love the way it sits on the land.
30:29So the roof follows that slope of the hill and then each floor follows the topography.
30:34And each piece of that does a different thing.
30:37That's probably my favorite.
30:38What we really love is when you have a house and you can look through one space and see another space.
30:42see another space and out to a garden or to a landscape and there's lots of
30:46moments like this in the house it's six steps as you go down so there's lots of
30:50different spaces defined by the stairs as you go down the nature surrounding it
30:55you work so hard on that and I've seen a lot of beautiful houses but but nowhere
31:00where someone's put as much thought and effort into into the nature I think
31:05that's really special and and the site deserved it oh yeah I think it's nice to
31:09respect the environment on the site and to touch it lightly and sensitively I
31:14think it's really really important that's the story of the whole process
31:19we're trying to push more towards sensitivity rather than spectacle totally
31:23yeah yeah that's really nicely put when did you do all the planting at what
31:28stage well we started that almost immediately after purchasing the land and
31:32that was a really nice thing actually spending you know we spent a good year
31:37on site planting coming here getting to know the land before yeah before we
31:43sort of embarked on the serious design side and we learned a lot in that time
31:48and we got to know know the land and I think that's really important
31:52there's something incredibly invigorating restorative I think about spending time in nature and this
32:08house has nature at its core it really does in fact that was as important to Christina as the
32:16house was I love how they have worked so hard and so brilliantly to restore the
32:22site to its kind of natural beauty and then you've got the beach and I'm pretty
32:29sure if you were to sort of conjure up in your daydreams the perfect beach it would
32:36look pretty similar to that the house the house is it's quiet it's not a loud statement it's more of a
32:48whisper and it just complements where it sits so perfectly
32:54after a quick dip in the ocean and spot of sunbathing I'm back on the road
33:08and I'm an hour north of Auckland heading to what I'm told is a sleepy little village called Point Wells
33:18a friendly close-knit community set on the water's edge locals call it the garden village due to its
33:27rich soils and subtropical microclimate a great spot for a home and a garden this is the life live on
33:38the water people picnicking people canoeing people fishing paddling about having a beautiful time and
33:45just the countryside absolutely stunning crinkle cut is a three-bedroom single-level home built around
33:56established trees and nestled amongst lush tropical gardens almost a third of the house is made up of
34:04covered verandas unwrapped in clever louvre doors the owners building company is behind many of the
34:12the country's most celebrated houses
34:16our mate aaron paterson is back as he was chosen to design their beautiful riverside home
34:22beautiful looking house
34:28g'day pho aaron welcome to crinkle cat great to be here what a beautiful spot it is a beautiful spot yeah and the
34:36garden is absolutely stunning these mature trees what are these these are bahutakawa trees yeah they're wonderful and the whole
34:42house was uh designed around and the clients so i'll tell you all about they they were really enamored
34:47with this this corner spot of the of the site it's just peace it is it's really calm i love the water
34:54yeah i always feel when i come here that i'm on holiday but it's not a holiday home they live here
34:58permanently right yeah yeah well can i look around yes come in
35:02here we are so this is it it's beautiful
35:12the head of the house is the kitchen it's all built around the kitchen it's so open
35:20clean white walls and ceilings anchored by a smoked oak floor it's calming peaks of greenery everywhere you look
35:30it's giving tropical island vibes too early for a pina colada it's it's it's so light and and you're
35:41not quite sure whether you're inside or outside at any moment i'm a real outdoors person yeah actually
35:46living somewhere when you're indoors but it feels like you're outdoors is my idea of absolutely stunning
35:51all the rooms flow off each other so there's not a lot of doors
36:03well don't worry there's doors on the toilets and the bathrooms but the spaces just flow into each other
36:12so you can kind of stand here and you can be in the dining room
36:15then you're in an outside north courtyard
36:17then you're in the media room and they all kind of you can see through to each one
36:26i have just kind of taken a breath and you're kind of it's calming it's really calming yeah it's
36:31a really quiet neighborhood yeah and i'm now speaking yeah what what was your brief the brief was for
36:39an extended family home they're sort of slowing down and there's grandkids involved and they come and
36:45stay so there's always a lot of kind of communal action in here
36:53the brief also called for a home that was enclosed
36:56all about the garden wrapping itself around courtyards and trees
37:04anytime anyone says they want a house connected to a garden i'm so happy because there's so much care
37:09and love in the garden and if you can build a house around the garden that's just the best thing
37:14what came first obviously you've got the mature trees yeah the trees really came first and there
37:19were some trees that we kept and built like that courtyard is basically designed around a tree
37:23there's still there yeah but it was the trees in the garden that dictated absolutely yeah it's
37:28designed as an s so as you walk around you can see it actually has two courtyards
37:33so there's lots of just different spaces you can be in the house
37:40they're very social-minded people and they like the connection to the street but they also wanted a
37:46a bit of privacy so we're really inspired by like pacific louvered houses
37:51with over 500 louvers custom-made not only beautiful but also extremely practical allowing
38:03for a cool breeze when you need it and filtering the light as well as passers-by but then coming
38:09this way are you in the garden or are you inside well you're in both really these louvers are really
38:16great for enclosing the place if you want a bit of privacy and you can open them up or opening them
38:21up completely yeah yeah say hello to everyone or go for a swim i'll go for a swim just duck across to
38:26the jetty and dive in
38:38the owner's son william who now runs the family company was the one tasked with overseeing the
38:43build of his parents home and what was it like for you building a house for them nervous yeah
38:50very nervous a the clients are your parents and b they've been doing it longer than you have yeah
38:56well they've been building these homes for 35 years for other people and people yeah they're
39:00they're sort of final one they got to build for themselves so yeah they're very happy and excited
39:04about that you know it was quite important from the start that they got to be the client and didn't
39:08sort of go back into being the builder so we were quite clear at the start that they were
39:11quite separate entities did that work blending into one i think so yeah yeah they certainly enjoyed
39:16the process trust is really important in a building project with the client and the architect
39:23and builder if that's happening you're having fun and from that point in it it just works they've done
39:27some of the most beautiful houses in new zealand and to be their architect was a privilege for us
39:42i'm in the seaside village of point wells exploring crinkle cut and its subtropical garden with architect
39:49aaron patterson i mean so this is a northern deck here so you can sit there you can be completely
39:55in the shade and you can get the breeze coming through yeah absolutely it's all feeling relaxed
40:01and effortless but i'm getting the sense there's more going on beneath the surface
40:07to the untrained eye it looks quite a simple build it doesn't look complicated yeah i think it's a bit
40:14like a swan where it's like really calm on the top but really busy below there's there's a real uh
40:21rhythm and cadence of the of the grid of the house so these trusses as they run through the house
40:26at a consistent grid are then picked up by the batons that are around the building so there's
40:31definitely complexities in it but they're done in such an ordered way that the complexity dissolves
40:36when you're inside it yeah complexity dissolves when you're yeah and that's why i'm getting a feel
40:40of it it feels very simple yeah
40:43what i really like in this space is is the clear story window and see how they're slightly
40:53tilting back yes it drags your eye up to the trees and i think it's also really nice you can be inside
41:00at night and you can look up and you can see the moon you can see the stars and you're inside and i
41:05think that's a really nice space to be in it's a lovely little detail
41:08this is probably a good place to see the crinkle cut of the house uh that's the cut of the corrugated
41:16iron so it's called crinkle cut yes because of that i bet it's noisy when it rains under the
41:22corrugated roof isn't it yeah europeans always say that they don't like the sound of rain on
41:27corrugated iron but new zealanders love it okay it's like music yeah
41:30through the courtyard is the main bedroom
41:40and you can get out to the garden so so every room has a really lovely connection with outside
41:49i mean it's not a huge space but it does so much for the house
41:54it always amazes me that you don't have to have that much space to do a really beautiful garden
42:00this is a nice little spot beautiful picture window yeah there's lots of spots that you can look
42:08through the house into into different gardens and things that's not white anymore no the exterior is
42:15pink it's a blush pink not quite as pink as your shirt but it's a very blush pink okay it's like a
42:22seashell yeah you got it yeah that's exactly what it should be
42:25down the hall and tucked away is the guest wing
42:37and so this is the area when the extended family comes they stay here and they've got this little
42:42breakout space that they can hang out in got their own bathroom and um a little deck that they can hang
42:48out in and now i'm noticing the pink yeah you do right it's pretty it is pretty different yeah
43:00everything's quite paired backs perfectly comfortable but it's definitely guests it's definitely not for
43:05people staying for a long time look you put your suitcase down you hang something up nobody unpacks
43:12i think it's perfect guests don't stay for too long
43:22it's all just perfectly put together there's width there's light there's beautiful places for
43:30treasures that they've obviously collected from all around the world that kind of adds feeling and character
43:36to it and it's so light and that's not light as in dark and light it's light as in
43:48how it how it makes you feel
43:53well i've had a beautiful look around oh good it's stunning you've been building some incredible
43:58houses around the country and and and this is incredible but it's also very simple it's
44:03quite pared down yeah it's not showy it's all i think that's what's really clever about it is it
44:08they haven't just thrown sort of opulence at it there's no slabs of marble there's no decorative
44:13ceilings and ornate things it's yeah it's painted plasterboard it's timber joinery uh it's just a
44:19clever composition of form and layout to create beautiful spaces and i think that's what what's really
44:25clever about it here the whole house is surrounded by greenery it is a tropical oasis this place
44:43i think what strikes me most of all is that despite having built some of the country's most extravagant
44:49homes this family when it came to building their own practiced such restraint because this is
44:59simple it's paired back it's uncomplicated it's serene and really calming and it just works
45:07in its settings so well i absolutely love it i really do
45:26stables house a modern country home with plenty of space for gardens horses and family
45:33why mataruru a passion project to restore and enhance native bush
45:45crinkle cut a peaceful subtropical retreat on the water's edge all incredibly stunning homes
45:55where the gardens and landscapes matter as much as the architecture itself
