00:00Welcome to the video from Auto Magazine Tuning Blog on the topic of the NIO ET5.
00:10The NIO ET5 and its station wagon counterpart, the ET5 Touring, are bringing a breath of fresh air to the mid-range of electric vehicles.
00:18With their elegant design, high quality and impressive range, they are setting new standards.
00:23But the question remains, will the Tesla Model 3 face serious competition?
00:27The NIO ET5 offers two battery sizes to choose from, one with 75 cat hours and one with 100 cat hours.
00:37A special innovation is the option to save time by replacing the battery instead of charging it.
00:43The price starts at just under âŹ60,000.
00:47There are also options for a subscription and battery rental.
00:50The range in the test with the large battery was 530 km for the sedan and 515 km for the station wagon.
01:01When looking at the NIO ET5, many viewers wonder whether it is a new Audi or perhaps the successor to the Tesla Model 3.
01:09In fact, the IT5 is the mid-range vehicle of the still young Chinese electric car brand NIO.
01:14The manufacturer has only been present on the German market since 2022 and is already impressing with high-quality products.
01:24The ET5 and the ET5 Touring compete in the territory of established models such as the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class.
01:31However, they are purely electric and with the first electric station wagon in this segment.
01:35The main competitors include the Tesla Model 3, the BMW i4 and the Poster 2.
01:42The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Ioniq 6 are also represented in the electric mid-range class.
01:47The design of the NIO ET5 and the ET5 Touring is truly impressive.
01:53With a length of almost 4.80 meters, the ET5 has good proportions.
01:57It immediately impresses with its gentle curves, an expressive front with narrow headlights and a chic rear that is reminiscent of a cross between the Audi A7 and the Porsche Taycan Sport Touring.
02:11The designers have done a great job here.
02:14The station wagon also receives a lot of praise for its elegant design, which is not only stylish but also practical.
02:19The electrically opening tailgate conceals a cleverly designed luggage compartment with a three-part folding rear seat bench and numerous storage options.
02:31It offers more volume than, for example, a BMW 3 Series Touring.
02:36The ET5 also impresses inside.
02:39After extending the recessed door handles and opening the doors with frameless windows, either via chip card, which also serves as a charging card, or via smartphone, you enter a tasteful lounge.
02:49High-quality materials, first-class workmanship, and a pleasant flair await you.
02:57Everything appears tidy and well-conceived.
03:00There are only a few buttons.
03:02The air vents are so cleverly integrated into the dashboard that you can't see them and direct the air into the interior without any drafts.
03:11The airflow can be regulated electronically via the 12-inch touch display in the middle of the dashboard.
03:16However, the menu structure of the operating system is not immediately obvious.
03:24Even after a long time, it takes a while to find rarely used functions.
03:28Some terms are also poorly translated into German, which makes operation difficult and occasionally unclear which function is behind them.
03:38If you want to adjust the exterior mirrors or the steering wheel, you first have to swipe to the right on the screen, then select the desired function and only then use the buttons on the steering wheel as universal buttons for adjustment.
03:53You can get used to it, but you wonder why the tried and tested small buttons for adjusting the mirrors, which drivers could use intuitively, were eliminated.
04:04The largely omission of conventional buttons has made operation cumbersome.
04:12Unfortunately, Tesla has been used as an impractical model here.
04:17The screen itself is generally impressive due to its good resolution and fast response time.
04:21However, some touch surfaces, such as the one for setting the temperature, could be larger.
04:29Alternatively, you can talk to Nomi to change the temperature, for example.
04:34Nomi, I'm cold.
04:36Nomi, set the temperature to 20 degrees or to ask questions.
04:39The artificial intelligence placed on the dashboard sometimes answers these better, sometimes worse and handles simple weather queries without any problems.
04:49However, it cannot provide an average consumption.
04:52Like any voice control system, Nomi still has room for improvement.
04:56The Nio ET5 no longer requires a start button to drive.
05:00Simply get in, push the small automatic gearshift lever forward, step on the gas and off you go.
05:05The ET5 moves smoothly and silently.
05:08The accelerator pedal can be precisely controlled, perfect for parking or relaxingly gliding along.
05:14The good noise insulation contributes to the luxurious aspirations and pleasantly blocks out the noisy outside world.
05:21But the ET5 also shows another side when you boldly press the right pedal.
05:27If desired, it shoots off as if you were on the run.
05:29No wonder, because two electric motors with a total of 360 kilowatts, or 490 horsepower, provide so much thrust that the electric car, which weighs over two tons, picks up speed in no time at all and reaches the 100 kilometers mark after just four seconds.
05:46The top speed is 200 kilometers per hour, which is impressive for an electric car.
05:52The sedan and station wagon are also capable sports cars, at least when the Sport Plus driving program is selected.
05:59In Sport mode, the NIO takes a little longer at 6 seconds.
06:05In comfort, things get more leisurely at 8 seconds, and when the Eco mode for efficient driving is activated, the NIO ET5 accelerates in 10 seconds, similar to a conventional family car with a standard engine.
06:18In terms of driving stability, both E-T5 variants are impressive.
06:24The straight-line stability is impeccable.
06:27After a steering input, the steering wheel quickly centers and keeps the car securely in its lane.
06:32The ET5 passes the evasion test safely and quickly if necessary.
06:37The steering coordination of the NIO ET5 is somewhat better than in other models.
06:41The center position in particular is more clearly defined, which not only ensures relaxed straight-line stability, but also benefits the steering precision.
06:52However, the steering feels disconnected and somewhat synthetic, especially in the standard active comfort setting.
06:59The steering power assistance is too high and the increase in steering power with increasing steering angle is barely noticeable.
07:05The engine draws its power from a battery with either 75 or 100 cat hours.
07:13Even the smaller battery should be sufficient for everyday use.
07:16Range according to WLTP, 456 kilometers.
07:20In practice, it is between 350 and 380 kilometers.
07:25However, even iCar newbies should have no worries on longer journeys with the larger version used in the test.
07:31NIO claims a range of up to 590 kilometers before a charging station has to be used.
07:39In the test, the ET5 achieved a range of 530 kilometers with an average consumption of just under 20 kilowatt-hours per 100 kilometers including charging losses.
07:50The slightly higher consumption of the station wagon resulted in a range of 515 kilometers.
07:55User reviews online mention the impressive efficiency of both models, which is why they can boast the maximum rating of 5 stars.
08:06In previous tests, the data for charging at a fast charging station was not entirely convincing.
08:13Charging from 10 to 80% took around 40 minutes due to the maximum charging power of a rather modest 128 kilowatts.
08:20This meant that the charging power was lower and the charging time significantly higher than the competition.
08:27In the meantime, however, NIO has made significant improvements.
08:30In the combined test, the maximum charging power was 183 kilowatts.
08:35The value for the average charging power, which is crucial for the charging time, also increased significantly to 172 kilowatts.
08:42As a result, it only took an acceptable 23 minutes to charge the battery from 10 to 80%.
08:49However, in winter temperatures and with a cold battery, the full charging power is reduced, which increases the charging time accordingly.
09:00Alternatively, a battery exchange station can also be used, which is what makes NIO special.
09:04If the battery is empty, it can be exchanged for a fully charged one within 5 to 10 minutes.
09:13Simply drive to a power swap station, have the ET5 park automatically, and a robot removes the old battery from the underbody, inserts a new one and off you go.
09:22This works well, at least in the future, because there are currently only a few of these stations in Germany.
09:30However, many more are set to be added, especially along the Autobahn.
09:36Several locations are currently also in operation in other European countries.
09:41Incidentally, only those who rent the battery can use the exchange stations.
09:45That makes sense, because you always get a new battery.
09:48In addition to the purchase price of just under 48,000 euros for the sedan and station wagon,
09:55there is a monthly battery rental fee of 169 euros for the small battery or 289 euros for the large battery.
10:02Those who do not want to pay this can also buy the battery.
10:07Purchasing the battery costs 12,000 euros for the smaller battery or 21,000 euros for the larger one,
10:13so that the total price of the car with battery amounts to just under 60,000 euros or almost 69,000 euros.
10:21That is not a small amount.
10:23A Tesla Model 3 is currently available from around 45,000 euros.
10:28However, the large battery and good standard equipment put the price into perspective.
10:32Of course, NIO also offers a subscription model with terms starting at one month.
10:39For their money, the user gets a comprehensive range of features.
10:43A perfectly sounding sound system with 23 speakers, a huge panoramic glass roof, vegan leather and a variety of assistance systems.
10:51These systems receive input from 33 sensors and 8 cameras and scan the environment with the computing power of 100 PlayStation 5s in preparation for autonomous driving.
11:05In terms of technology, the ET5 sets the bar high for the competition.
11:09However, there is room for improvement in other areas.
11:13There is no glove compartment and NIO has also dispensed with an additional trunk under the hood.
11:17Instead, the charging cable takes up space in the sedan's trunk, which is 420L according to the measurement method and does not open via large tailgate as one might expect, but through a loading hatch like in a notchback model.
11:35However, this is also the case with the Tesla Model 3.
11:39The standard volume of the station wagon is 415L, which is average.
11:43If you fold down the rear seats and use the entire space behind the front seats, up to 1430L are available.
11:53Small items can be stowed under the boot floor, but with only 10 lumens it's manageable.
12:00Tall occupants always sit a bit too high in the ET5, as the seats can't be lowered far enough.
12:07The amount of space itself is okay.
12:09Up to 1.90 meters tall people can sit comfortably in the front.
12:13However, the front occupants have a harder time.
12:16They can't fit their feet under the front seat.
12:20Their heads are right next to the C-pillar and from about 1.8 meters tall.
12:25In the 1.90 meters station wagon, they touch the roof.
12:29The panoramic glass roof extends far back and thus ensures a light-flooded interior.
12:35Even when you don't want it to, as there are unfortunately no blinds.
12:39Whoever came up with the idea of reducing the rear window of the sedan to a small slit in the window has probably never reverse parked.
12:49There is a camera that works well, but you would like to see more of the traffic in the rear view mirror, not just when parking, but also while driving.
12:56The rear window of the station wagon is also very narrow and the headrests cannot be lowered.
13:04The towing capacity is worth mentioning on the plus side.
13:07The E-T5 can tow up to 1,400 kilograms and can be ordered with an electrically extendable trailer hitch.
13:15Not a record value, but it is sufficient for a small caravan.
13:19A drawbar load of 100 kilograms also allows bicycles to be transported on the trailer hitch.
13:25Overall, the NIO E-T5 is shaking up the electric mid-range segment.
13:29With its elegant design, high quality and good range, it is setting new standards.
13:37Users' experiences online praise the impressive performance and innovative features such as battery replacement.
13:43Whether this will make it a serious competitor for Tesla and company remains to be seen.
