00:00We've all seen the bad practice reports out there on Justin Fields, and now every single one of his throws are going to be scrutinized.
00:08We're in a world of social media where everybody is a quarterback coach these days, including me right now.
00:14But my biggest question is, are the Jets not helping Justin Fields by keeping the offense so damn vanilla this preseason?
00:23I got three throws versus the Giants that Fields should have completed.
00:27All right, first one. Incomplete pass to Garrett Wilson on just a quick now route on the screen.
00:34Let's run this thing. It's just a quick now screen.
00:37It's just you call it because the box is stacked.
00:41You can't run the football against the look, and you just want to get the ball out to your playmaker right away.
00:47There's no reason why this ball should be thrown into the ground.
00:51They are going to run this play or this type of concept a lot this season.
00:57They're not shying away or shying from the fact that they run or run the football.
01:02So when the box is stacked, then you just throw a quick pop out there to Garrett Wilson.
01:08This ball cannot be thrown into the ground.
01:10He has to have a shot or give him a shot to catch it and make a play.
01:16We're talking about a wiggly receiver that can get yacked.
01:19Let's go to the trenches because it looks, the throw, I mean, the throw looks a lot worse on the tight than what it does from the wide.
01:27All right, a lot of people are going to say, yes, it was a high snap.
01:30We can go ahead and run it now.
01:32Yes, it was a high snap, and you'll see it.
01:34But you run this, you do this every day.
01:36You do this during individuals every single day.
01:40You can't just catch it, panic, and throw it into the ground.
01:43Now, look, we saw the bad snap, but come on, you've got to give him a chance.
01:47You have to give your receiver, your playmaker, a chance to catch it and make some sort of move to try and break a tackle and get up the field.
01:55Let's watch the snap again because, again, the center, I'm not absolving him of what his problem was.
02:03That is a high snap.
02:04Now, he's probably panicking because the timing is going off in his head.
02:09He's thinking he's got to get rid of that football now.
02:12But at the end of the day, that should be a completed pass to give that wide receiver, that wide receiver being Garrett Wilson, who just got paid, give him a shot to make a play.
02:21Let's go on to the second play.
02:23All right, this one is another incompletion to Garrett Wilson.
02:28The Giants defense, I got to give it to them.
02:30They fooled him on this one.
02:31They fooled Justin Fields into having bad eyes and making a bad read.
02:36Right now, they're giving a cover four look, which makes it Javon Holland looks like he's over the top right now.
02:44And then Paulson Adebo, they both got man vertical, meaning that Paulson Adebo is playing, well, what cover four is, Paulson Adebo plays this man, his receiver, vertical, one-fourth of the field.
02:56Same thing with the safety right here.
02:58And Javon Holland looks like cover four, but they rolled to a cloud coverage post-snap, and they got Justin Fields.
03:06The ball should have been thrown down here.
03:08But let's watch.
03:09Let's go ahead and watch this route combination up top.
03:11I'm going to get off so you guys can see.
03:13You see how, right, pause it.
03:16Well, we'll run it back to the top.
03:18Let's run this back to the top.
03:19You see the look, how they're giving that cover four look?
03:22Now, at the snap of the ball, watch what Paulson Adebo does here.
03:25Cover four, Paulson.
03:27Now, his back is to Justin Fields here.
03:32Javon Holland has rolled the coverage over to Garrett Wilson.
03:37They're doubling Garrett Wilson.
03:39They are taking him out of the play.
03:41Justin Fields should be able to identify that safety rolling over the top, this corner squatting on this stop route or this hinge route by Garrett Wilson.
03:50And he should come off of that look and come right down here.
03:54Here he goes.
03:55Take it.
03:56Take the money right down here.
03:57You got someone controlling the flat defender.
04:00Number two receiver controls and occupies that flat defender to where he can't get up under this mirrored hinge route down at the bottom.
04:08This ball has to go here.
04:11Let's go look at the throw, though, up top.
04:14Because with Paulson Adebo, can we rewind that again?
04:16With Paulson Adebo playing inside leverage the way he is, we'll pause it there.
04:23He's inside, right?
04:25Garrett Wilson is putting his right foot into the ground and coming back down his stem, retracing his steps.
04:32That ball has to be to the sideline to give him a chance.
04:35To give him a chance to catch that pass.
04:38But my question is this, or my questions in film room is going to be, Garrett Wilson, why are you short of the sticks?
04:46You got to run that route one yard past the sticks.
04:49This concept usually converts to a go route versus press or roll coverage.
04:56For some reason, they locked it.
04:58It's preseason.
04:59They're being vanilla.
04:59But that ball should not be thrown over here, especially with Paulson Adebo sitting on the route with the safety over the top.
05:08Let's go to the trenches and see how or where Justin Fields' eyes took him.
05:13All right.
05:14There's no pressure.
05:15It's blocked up.
05:17This should be a throw and catch.
05:20But again, the eyes got him.
05:22Pause it.
05:23Right there.
05:24So Braylon Allen does cross face.
05:27But hey, it happens.
05:28He's got to help.
05:29There's leakage there.
05:30That may be Brian Burns or Abdul Carter.
05:33That man's coming for your head.
05:35Braylon Allen is trying to protect you.
05:37We're going to break down.
05:38Let's look at the throw.
05:40Because remember how I said how Paulson Adebo was to the inside.
05:44Look, you've already messed up.
05:46You've got a negative for staying on that side.
05:48For trying to throw a stop route, hinge route into a roll coverage.
05:53Pause.
05:53Back that up and pause again.
05:55That ball has to be to the outside.
05:57Got to place it to the outside.
05:59Can't be inside.
06:00Actually hits Paulson Adebo on his foot.
06:02They got him.
06:03They fooled him.
06:04He hesitated on the throw.
06:06And a bad throw to the inside.
06:08That could be picked in a game.
06:10He has to be able to read that coverage and not lock on Garrett Wilson so much.
06:16Trust the other wide receivers in this offense.
06:18Because this play needs to be completed.
06:23This has to be a completed pass.
06:25Let's move on to the next play.
06:27Alright, let's go.
06:28And I'm going to step off for this one.
06:30Because I am upset that this simple route concept was not completed.
06:37Let me get out of the way.
06:38Tanner Engstrand simplifies the call and just calls de-slant.
06:43Diagonal slant.
06:45Just, you see, pause that here.
06:48You see, I believe that's Mason Taylor.
06:50Motion's over.
06:51You've got Garrett Wilson down at the bottom.
06:54Plus two split.
06:55This is basic day one install.
06:58Some offenses call it Dallas.
07:00Again, I call it de-slant.
07:02A diagonal by two and a slant by wide receiver one.
07:08Day one install, y'all.
07:10And it's against cover one.
07:12You know where you're going with the football.
07:15You run this slant every day during routes on, air, and individual.
07:20This should be a pitch and catch.
07:22I hate to have to nitpick this, but it should be completed.
07:25It should be a completed football in terms of the concept versus the coverage.
07:30I told you I'd get out of the way, but this really grinds my gears.
07:35Good route by Wilson.
07:37Ball's late.
07:38Ball's late.
07:39And again, I'm being nitpicky because can we rewind this again?
07:42As soon as Justin Fields sees this backer here who's got man-to-man versus tight end,
07:50as soon as he sees him turn and run the way he is, back to the action,
07:56you know it's man-to-man, and you know this window,
07:58this ball has to be thrown right here, right off the back of this linebacker to max it.
08:05Look at the space Garrett Wilson has.
08:06You want to maximize the separation for your receiver.
08:10Instead, it's a little late.
08:12It's on his chest, but that gives that corner, that two-step,
08:16so that hesitation in the throw gives that corner just enough time to get to the man,
08:23play the receiver, play the ball, and have an incomplete pass right here.
08:29But this is day one install, and this is a concept that should be completed against this look.
08:36Let's look at the tight.
08:37All right, and I'm not trying to beat or kick a dead horse here,
08:42but this is the Jets' offense right now.
08:45They're going to run the football and have simple concepts in order for Justin Fields to feel comfortable
08:51and get the ball out of his hands.
08:53Again, this has to be completed here.
08:55No pressure.
08:56Quick throw.
08:57Catch it.
08:58Rock and throw.
09:00You know what this coverage is.
09:03Pause it.
09:03You see this bat.
09:05You see Micah McFadden running to guard his man, tight end.
09:10You see this space right here.
09:11Let me get out of the way.
09:13All this space right here is for Garrett to eat.
09:15All that real estate out there in Florham Park.
09:18That's what that's.
09:20It's there for him to be a top-10 wide receiver.
09:23Now, my question is, as we go, and we're going to play through this catch,
09:26we're going to pause at the pass breakup, rewind it just a little bit.
09:32But should Garrett have flattened his route off a little bit?
09:36Is Justin Fields late with the throw?
09:39Again, I hate to be so nitpicky, but why wasn't this pass or this concept completed?
09:48That's something you got to be asking yourself.
09:51So as we talk about the development of Justin Fields in this offense,
09:56getting comfortable in this offense,
09:58we have to see these simple throws being made.
10:02Look, I'm rooting for Justin Fields this season.
10:05But those throws, these three plays and three throws that I've just shown you,
10:10as an NFL quarterback, those have to be completed.
10:13Simple concepts, simple reads.
10:15It should have been pitch and catch.
10:17We know the Jets are going to run the football this season,
10:19but there are going to be times where Justin Fields is going to have to make plays
