00:00You know, John, the other thing I was I've been thinking about a lot and we had David Stearns on a couple of weeks ago and he gave a vote of confidence to Carlos Martinez, Carlos Mendoza.
00:11And I saw David over the weekend on Sunday at the ballpark in the dugout before the game.
00:16And I asked again and he reasserted Carlos Mendoza is doing a very good job.
00:21Look, I don't think I know you hate when I do this.
00:25The Knicks went to the Eastern Conference final and we none of us saw Tom Thibodeau, I think, being bounced.
00:30And so, like, you never know what begins to happen in amid failure, unexpected failure.
00:36And so maybe something will happen with a manager, a pitching coach, a hitting coach, not bringing back Alonzo or Edwin Diaz because you feel like you have to change up.
00:48John, I just wonder, few people follow offseason maneuvers like you and have a good feel for it.
00:55This is not going to go without a scapegoat or three.
00:58What do you think if this week goes terribly for the Mets, what do you think happens here?
01:04Yeah, I mean, I definitely think there will be scapegoats, but I think they need to change the mix in that clubhouse for sure.
01:09I'm sorry, not Edwin Diaz. Let's not touch him.
01:12He's got nothing to do with the bad chemistry and he's the one pitcher who's been good from beginning to end.
01:18So you need more relievers, if anything.
01:22You know, I would change the mix in that clubhouse.
01:26You know, I would consider trading guys.
01:30You know, I know maybe some people will disagree.
01:32I would probably trade Alvarez.
01:35I would probably try to trade McNeil.
01:38I would try to trade several players.
01:40I would not, you know, I would definitely look at changing the mix in that clubhouse.
01:46I'm not picking on any one particular player.
01:49Obviously, Lindor is not going anywhere.
01:51Soto is not going anywhere.
01:53I think Beatty has improved.
01:57Nimmo is not going anywhere.
01:59There aren't a lot of options to change that mix.
02:03You know, I would get a veteran catcher and, you know, somebody else.
02:09You know, my opinion.
02:11You know, obviously I give Alvarez credit.
02:15He's a tough guy.
02:16He's playing with eight fingers.
02:18He's went down, didn't complain, came back, improved.
02:23I think he's got great value.
02:25That's where I would start.
02:26You know, I'm not sure who to blame in terms of the coaches or whatever.
02:31But certainly if this collapse goes through, I'd be shocked if they kept the whole staff exactly as is.
02:38Now I'm going to take Stearns at his word.
02:40And we all think Mendoza is terrific.
02:44And I think he'll survive.
02:47I generally think if there's a collapse, the manager should go.
02:52You need to change the narrative.
02:55In this case, he was so great last year.
02:59I do believe in him.
03:00I would not let him go, my opinion.
03:04But I definitely would change the mix in that clubhouse.
03:07That's what I would do.
03:08So you're talking about who would go.
03:09I'm going to throw out one thing.
03:11And again, I always I'm worried about aggregation.
03:13So I want to say nothing.
03:16I've heard nothing.
03:17This is something I've been thinking about recently.
03:19And the answer could be with Steve Cohen's money, just take it all.
03:24But, John, if you were in charge and you were trying to change the mix and the attitude, would you rather have Pete Alonzo at first and whatever combination at third, the Vientos Beatty thing, or would you rather have Vientos in first and Alex Bregman at third and bring in Alex Bregman's attitude and feistiness and baseball IQ to this group?
03:46I mean, that's an interesting question.
03:51You know, I you know, and it's possible.
03:54It could happen.
03:54I think Bregman will end up going back to the red.
03:56I agree with you.
03:57But I've been there one year and Alonzo's been a lifelong loyal Met.
04:03You know, I could go.
04:05I could say flip a coin on whether Alonzo will come back because we've seen that play out for last year.
04:10Right.
04:10And they barely got him back.
04:12I mean, at the end, Steve Cohen kind of rescued that.
04:15So I could see that one going either way.
04:17I do think Bregman will be back with the Red Sox.
04:20But why?
04:20I wouldn't rule anything out in terms of I'm like Diaz.
04:24To me, you got it.
04:25You got to bring it back.
04:26You need to close it.
04:28Right.
04:29And obviously, there are guys on long term deals who are stars.
04:34They're not going anywhere.
04:35So, you know, I'm not going to say that they need to do this.
04:39They need to bring this guy back.
04:40And Alonzo was on with us.
04:42He's had a great year.
04:43He's incredibly tough.
04:46I don't see him as the problem.
04:49I, you know, he certainly deserves a long term deal.
04:53You know, I think they need to change the mix.
04:56However they do it, they need to change the mix.
04:59And certainly it's not going to be Lindor, Soto or Nimmo.
05:02So, you know, they need to get better pitching, too.
05:06That's another.
05:08They need to fix the pitching.
05:10That's probably a bigger problem.
05:11But, you know, I'm not going to go on here and say they have to bring Alonzo back at this point.
05:16Although he's been great this year and he's a great Met and all that.
05:20And if fans want him back, there's a lot of good reasons to bring him back.
05:24But my number one thing right now, other than fix the pitching, is you've got to change the mix.
05:30Well, the reason I brought up Bregman is I think there's very few players who do what you're saying anymore in the sport.
05:36And I think Bregman is one of those guys who changes the attitude, the temperature in a clubhouse for the positive.
05:44I think he's a, like, I agree.
05:47And he's perfect.
05:48He's perfect for Boston.
05:49I agree.
05:50I think Boston will bring him back.
05:52That's why I got up in the front of this.
05:54I know it won't stop the aggregation idiots from doing what they do.
05:58But, like, I was just saying, if you're going to change the mix, let's not only talk about who would leave.
06:04Who's somebody who would change the temperature of your clubhouse for the positive?
