00:00In the mythical world of ancient China, a land of legendary monsters, evil witches, and sinister villains,
00:13the wise monk Tripitaka and his protector Monkey set out on a treacherous journey in search of the fabled Scrolls of Wisdom.
00:23Joined by Pigsy and Sandy, these four companions travel together through this strange and magical world,
00:34enduring perilous adventures and dangerous adversaries on their mission for the Emperor and all of China.
00:42The Legends of the Monkey King is China's greatest story.
00:48It is an expedition unlike any other ever taken.
00:52It is the journey to the West.
01:05As Tripitaka and his companions continued their journey from China to India,
01:09they traveled across a wind-whip and rocky stretch of desert until they finally came to the Kingdom of Bijou,
01:16an ancient and weather-beaten land.
01:19The good king of Bijou had married the niece of the royal chancellor.
01:23Little did he know that in reality, his wife and her uncle were evil and magical creatures.
01:29And so, the four friends entered the city and found the inn where travelers stayed.
01:34I'm coming!
01:36Who are you? Are you monsters?
01:42Why, of course not. We're pilgrims. We're on our way to India. We're on a quest for the books of wisdom.
01:49All we want is a place to rest and pass the night.
01:53Do you really expect me to provide lodging for the likes of a monkey and a pig?
01:57You have nothing to fear, for they are my loyal companions and good and noble souls.
02:01All right, then. Come this way.
02:04It appears to me that you are fortunate to live in such a happy, prosperous kingdom.
02:09It becomes less happy and prosperous with every passing day.
02:12But how can that be?
02:14Because our queen is a cruel woman.
02:16She and her uncle, the chancellor, use their power to raise taxes and then keep all the money themselves.
02:22They grow fat while we suffer.
02:24But that's unfair, and it shouldn't be allowed.
02:26What can we do?
02:27I shall speak with your king tomorrow.
02:30True, he may listen to you at least. I hope so.
02:34That very night in the queen's private chamber, she and her uncle were hatching an evil scheme.
02:39We must lower the taxes, uncle.
02:41Are you insane?
02:43But the people are growing angrier every day. We don't want to risk an open revolt.
02:48Is it that bad?
02:49Everywhere they're saying our demands are unreasonable.
02:51What if you were to take to your bedchamber?
02:55Huh? What has my bedchamber got to do with it?
02:58If you were deathly ill...
03:00They'd willingly pay for my medicines, wouldn't they?
03:03Exactly. You take to your bed and the peasants pay.
03:06Will the king be fooled?
03:08I'm sure you can fool him and everyone else in the kingdom.
03:11If we say their taxes are to pay for your medicine, they'll give till it hurts.
03:15Aren't we clever?
03:18The next day, the chancellor told the king that the queen had fallen gravely ill.
03:24She will need medicines and they'll be costly.
03:27May I see her? But she looks so well.
03:30Yes, she does. And that's exactly what makes this exotic and insidious disease so dangerous.
03:36Your majesty, there's a monk who's passing through the kingdom on his way to India.
03:40And he wants to see you to discuss the unfair taxes.
03:43Tell him I cannot possibly see him, for I've too much on my mind.
03:47And what name does this itinerant monk go by?
03:49He says his name is Tripitaka.
03:51Your majesty, this Tripitaka is a very famous monk.
03:54And if we let him in, we can hold him for re...
03:56I mean, ask him if he knows what remedies might help the queen.
04:00Tripitaka must come in. Tripitaka must come in.
04:05Tripitaka must come in.
04:07Tripitaka must come in. This way.
04:10But the visitor only appeared to be Tripitaka. In reality, he was monkey in disguise.
04:16I'm told you disapprove of our tax system. But since you don't live here, I fail to see what business it is of yours.
04:22I am a monk and an enemy of injustice everywhere. So when I was told of the people suffering, I decided that I must make it my business.
04:29But I do not agree with you that the taxes here are unjust.
04:32Majesty, our visitor must be told of the queen's illness.
04:35Oh, you tell him about it, Chancellor.
04:41Our queen has been stricken with a mysterious deadly illness.
04:44Oh, really? When?
04:45Just last night. And I assure you it is a kind of illness requiring expensive treatment which our taxes will pay for.
04:52Oh, great and wise monk. Could you not heal my poor suffering wife as a favor to me?
04:57My inner eye may be able to see the problem. So yes, if you please, take me to her.
05:01If you are able to end her misery, we shall be delighted. But should you fail, the king will be displeased.
05:06Hmm. Well, let me have a look and I'll do the best I can.
05:18She has a high fever and dreadful chills on top of that.
05:21Let me have a look.
05:22Yes, do please examine her closely.
05:24As monkey gazed at the queen, he and the evil creature saw through each other's disguises.
05:30Now that you've examined her, I suggest you retire to your inn for a while.
05:36All right, but if she keeps getting worse, you'll have only yourselves to blame.
05:40No, no, please don't leave us.
05:42Chancellor, you mustn't send him away if it's possible he can be of help.
05:47All right, but he'd better conduct himself with prudence.
05:50Won't you look at the queen again?
05:51I will, although I can discern more clearly without the impediment of a disguise.
06:00I am not a monk, but this is no queen either, as you can see.
06:03Let her go or prepare to submit to punishment!
06:08I'd stand back if I were you!
06:17Oh, my stars!
06:18The queen flew to the inn, where the real Trippitaka waited with Pigsy and Sandy.
06:23Things are so quiet around here, I tell you, it's starting to make me nervous!
06:27And with good reason.
06:29The queen swooped off and changed herself into a palace god.
06:36Who are you and what do you want?
06:38I've come to tell you your friend is battling our chancellor.
06:41And where is this battle?
06:43They were in the palace fighting tooth and nail.
06:45I've come here to ask you to help me make them stop.
06:48I'll take you there if you wish.
06:49Sandy, I'm going to help Monkey.
06:51You stay here with the master!
06:53Hey, that's not the way to the palace.
06:56I don't believe you are who you say you are.
06:59Huh?
07:00Either explain why you're walking in the wrong direction or deal with my lance.
07:04Ah!
07:09Hyah!
07:10Ah!
07:11Ah!
07:16You there!
07:17Huh?
07:18You're coming with me!
07:19Huh?
07:20What was that?
07:25Meanwhile, Monkey was still chasing the chancellor.
07:28Keep your distance, Monkey, for you're badly outmatched!
07:31I will never let up until you promise to go away and stop oppressing this kingdom!
07:36Monkey!
07:37How about we show him we mean business?
07:39Ah!
07:40Ah!
07:41Ah!
07:42Ah!
07:43Ah!
07:44Ah!
07:45Ah!
07:46Ah!
07:47Ah!
07:48Ah!
07:49Try as you might, you'll never defeat me!
07:51You didn't leave the master alone!
07:53Of course not!
07:54Sandy's with him!
07:55Right!
07:56After the chancellor!
07:59I really am getting too old for this.
08:01Taking a little breather?
08:05How'd he find me so fast?
08:07Bit out of shape, are we?
08:09Huh?
08:10Go easy on yourself!
08:11Give up!
08:12The queen's captured Tripidaka!
08:16What?
08:17Did Sandy say what I thought he said?
08:19If the master's been captured, what'll we do?
08:22Huh?
08:23Hey, you!
08:24What's so funny?
08:25I'll teach you to make fun of our master!
08:27Huh?
08:28She was too strong for me!
08:30But you should have seen her coming and not let her near the inn!
08:33She deceived me by disguising herself as a palace guard!
08:36Ha!
08:37Ha!
08:38Ha!
08:39She's a clever little fox and she'll get me out of this!
08:41Ha!
08:42Ha!
08:43One of the queen's bat warriors had seen what had happened to the chancellor.
08:46Off he flew, straight to the secret cave deep within the bowels of the mountain,
08:51where the wicked queen had her hideout, and where Tripidaka was being held prisoner.
08:56The chancellor has been captured!
08:59What?
09:00How could that possibly be?
09:01The monkey and the pig caught him in the woods!
09:03I must free him, but the monkey's too strong to fight.
09:06What can I do?
09:07I need to think of a trick.
09:09But what?
09:10Hmm.
09:11Go to the monkey and tell him I'll release the monk in exchange for the chancellor.
09:16I will!
09:17I come from the queen.
09:28Release the chancellor and your friend shall go free.
09:30Oh, she's ready to bargain, is she?
09:33And where are we to release the chancellor?
09:36At her cave on the far side of the woods.
09:38You may go and tell her that we'll be there with him shortly.
09:42Ha!
09:43Here's what we'll do.
09:44Ha!
09:45I know what you're thinking!
09:46Ha!
09:47Ha!
09:48Ha!
09:49The chancellor arrived at the queen's secret cave for the exchange.
09:53Hold on!
09:54Huh?
09:55There's no need to untie him.
09:57It was all a ruse.
09:58He's not going anywhere.
10:00Now that I've got you back, I have no intention of letting him go.
10:04But your majesty, you gave your word. You must let him go.
10:07No, he's mine.
10:08And I intend to keep him here forever.
10:11Huh?
10:12I say we banish him to a far away forest.
10:15No, he sleeps now.
10:17Huh?
10:18Well done.
10:21Thank you, master.
10:22The real chancellor was still a prisoner under Sandy and Pigsy's vigilant guard.
10:27Are you sleeping again?
10:30No, I was just resting my eyes.
10:33I'm feeling a little peckish. How about you? As soon as monkey comes back with Trippitaka, we can all have a little snack.
10:44We're back!
10:45Huh?
10:46I banished the queen to a remote forest and you're going too!
10:49Wait! Wait!
10:50Do not banish your prisoner!
10:52Who in the world are you?
10:55Pardon me, but I am a servant of the mountain Buddha, Linji. Your prisoner is really a stag from the mountain Buddha's garden. He ran away with his fox niece and they've caused much trouble in these parts.
11:07Well, now aren't you ashamed of yourself?
11:10You and your niece are coming back with me.
11:12I hope you'll think hard about all the trouble you've caused and I hope you'll guard your animals better.
11:17Yes, I shall keep a very close eye on them from now on. Thank you for catching them.
11:22We are more than happy to be of help. You see, monkey, you never know who you're really serving.
11:27The Buddha thanks you.
11:29It's hard to believe such a gentle creature did such damage.
11:32Yeah.
11:33Well, I must be going now. Goodbye!
11:36Goodbye!
11:37Goodbye!
11:38Well, that was an interesting experience and it has given us much to think about. So, are we ready to resume our journey?
11:45Ready when you are!
11:47The king of Bijou returned the taxes that had been unjustly collected and the people were happy again.
11:53As for the four companions, they set out once more on their journey to the west.
12:03As Tripitaka and his companions continued their journey, they came to the land of Krags, a country which was ruled by three magical creatures called the Lords of Mischief.
12:16Monkey was out scouting the land in advance of their travels when he saw a herald bringing important news to a band of monsters.
12:24I called for a Lucky Thirteen! Lay your money down! Try your luck all over there!
12:29Let's go, Lucky Supper!
12:30Lay your money down now, last chance, my friends!
12:35Thirteen!
12:40Suddenly, they heard the herald shout.
12:42Monsters everywhere!
12:45Monsters everywhere!
12:46Not far away, some other monsters were cooking supper.
12:49If you're a monster, listen to me!
12:54Gather round!
12:55All monsters, gather round!
12:58I think he's trying to get our attention!
13:01I have important news for all monsters!
13:04And I know you're out there!
13:09Here we are!
13:11What's the news you've got for us?
13:13Sounds pretty important!
13:15Now, I can't start until I'm sure all the monsters are here!
13:21The rest of them are coming, it won't be long!
13:28I can't start, not till I'm sure everybody's here!
13:31I'm the last one! Believe me, this better be good!
13:34Spit it out, Harold! What's up?
13:36All right, everyone, I'm only saying this once, so listen up!
13:39There are four pilgrims!
13:41They're passing through here on their way to India,
13:43and the Lords of Mischief want them captured!
13:46Little did the herald know, monkey could hear every word!
13:48These pilgrims have defeated many of our brothers in other lands!
13:52Boo!
13:53We must avenge these insults by capturing all four of them without fail!
13:57One of them is a monkey!
13:59He can turn himself into any form!
14:01It's not funny! This is serious!
14:07Whoever catches the pilgrims is in for a big reward!
14:11But remember, you gotta catch them first!
14:14Come on, let's go!
14:21Capture the four pilgrims and win a big reward!
14:24The Lords of Mischief will avenge our brothers!
14:27If they were to pass through this land safely,
14:30Monkey would need to know more about these Lords of Mischief.
14:33Capture the four pilgrims and win a big reward!
14:35The Lords of Mischief will avenge our brothers!
14:37Hear ye monsters! Capture the four pilgrims!
14:40Hey, who are you?
14:42Who am I?
14:44The Lords of Mischief Supreme Herald!
14:47You are?
14:48That's right!
14:49But I've never seen you before!
14:51Why would you? You're a common, low-grade herald!
14:54Why would you ever have occasion to speak to me?
14:56Low-grade, huh?
14:57Uh-huh!
14:58If you're a real herald, then show me your official herald's seal!
15:01Brazen fool!
15:03How dare you ask the Supreme Herald to show his seal!
15:07Where is your seal?
15:08But I've got it here somewhere!
15:11Here it is, Your Honor!
15:13I am an official herald!
15:15Now take a look at my seal, Ninny!
15:19Read it out loud to me!
15:22Huh?
15:23Um, I don't read too good, but it looks like it says, uh...
15:26It says, uh...
15:27It says, uh...
15:28Supreme Herald!
15:29Huh!
15:30Hehehehe!
15:31Boy, I'm sorry, sir!
15:32Uh, madam!
15:33I didn't recognize you!
15:34And that's why I was a little bit rude!
15:36Pardon me!
15:37You were terribly rude!
15:39You're a liar and a fake!
15:41But I haven't done anything wrong!
15:43I'm a real herald!
15:44Oh, sure!
15:45You'd say that!
15:46But how do I know you're not monkey in disguise?
15:49Tell me, what powers do the Lords of Mischief possess?
15:52Lord Golden Mane has the strength of a hundred lions,
15:55and Lord Longtrunk has a magical nose,
15:57and Lord Darkwing has an alabaster bottle
15:59that can capture anyone!
16:01Go to sleep!
16:02Huh?
16:03Time!
16:04Time!
16:05Time!
16:06Time!
16:07Time!
16:08Time!
16:13Meanwhile, in a clearing some distance away,
16:16Tripitaka, Pigsy, and Sandy were waiting for Monkey
16:20to return from his scouting expedition.
16:22Pigsy was watching for him on the mountain path,
16:25but there was no sign of him.
16:29I couldn't find him.
16:31I get tired pacing those craggy roads.
16:38Sandy, what are you doing there?
16:40Reading.
16:41Reading?
16:42It's wearing me out just looking at you, old buddy.
16:46I think I'll take a nap.
16:48Suit yourself.
16:53Disguised as the Herald, Monkey arrived at the mountain fortress of the Lords of Mischief.
16:58In the fortress throne room, three monster women were performing a fire dance for the entertainment of their evil masters,
17:07Lord Goldenmane, Lord Darkwing, and Lord Longchark.
17:20Lords of Mischief, I have important news!
17:24Hear ye, hear ye, evil lords!
17:27Huh?
17:28I have earth-shattering news I must share with the great lords of mischief.
17:34Open your ears, mighty lords, for I come to bring you extraordinary tidings.
17:40Hear ye, hear ye!
17:42Isn't that our own Herald returning?
17:44What can he have to tell us?
17:47News, news, I have news that must be heard without fail.
17:51News I bring, though I am in profound distress.
17:54Huh?
17:54Huh?
17:54What's the matter with you, Harold?
17:58Hmm?
17:58Let me have a look at him.
18:01The way he stares, he seems to be in shock.
18:04He needs a good thrashing.
18:06Allow me!
18:08Oh!
18:13Sorry.
18:15Huh?
18:15So what's this news you're bursting to tell us?
18:19I saw...
18:20I saw monkey!
18:23You saw monkey?
18:24Oh, monkey!
18:25What does he look like?
18:27He's as big as a house, with razor-sharp claws as long as your arm, Lord Goldenmane.
18:31What?
18:32And he said...
18:33He said...
18:33No, no, I can't say it.
18:34Tell us what he said!
18:36It's too horrible!
18:37Tell us what he said, or you'll regret it!
18:40He said when he caught you three, he'd lock you up in the world's deepest dungeon and leave you there till you repent in all your evil ways!
18:49Close the fortress doors!
18:50As the great portals closed, the lords of mischief little knew that they were shutting their most dreaded enemy inside the fortress with them.
19:00I thought our first priority was to capture the pilgrims!
19:04It is, but we have to be on guard against Monkey. He could be lurking outside!
19:08What's the point of closing the doors? It's well known Monkey can slip through closed doors in the form of a fly!
19:15Yes, that's true enough, but...
19:17Could it be?
19:18That's him! Swat him before he swats you!
19:25You got him!
19:27There he is! Swat him! Up there!
19:33Now where did he go?
19:35There he is, heading straight for our food! Swat him, Lord Goldenmane!
19:48Lord Darkwing, why don't you use your magic alabaster bottle?
19:54Now why didn't I think of that?
19:57Ha! Into the bottle, Monkey!
20:00What if it's not Monkey? What if it's just a fly?
20:03Be out of here!
20:04But can't you hear him?
20:05Be out of here!
20:06That doesn't sound like a fly to me!
20:09Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
20:10We're on my dancing girls! Let's celebrate!
20:11Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
20:12Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
20:28Especially, Mary.
20:35Now was Monkey's chance.
20:40Change!
20:41What?
20:42Surprise!
20:44Hi there, fellas. I'm Monkey.
20:47Thanks for the gift.
20:49Give that back to me!
20:50Into the bottle, Darkwing!
20:54Wanna join him? Cause you're next!
20:57Sorry, Monkey, but it's my bottle and it'll do what I tell it to!
21:01Into the bottle, Monkey!
21:03Hope you'd like it in here, because from now on this will be your permanent home!
21:08Trapped in the bottle, Monkey desperately tried to jump through the opening.
21:15But it was no use.
21:18I have another surprise for you. Have a taste of my magical ice fire!
21:24The ice began to form around Monkey's feet.
21:28In a flash, he was frozen solid.
21:31Now burn!
21:33Flames began to rise around the block of ice.
21:36Flames that would melt the ice and Monkey with it.
21:39The ice fire has done its work.
21:42Now to find a way to get myself out of this wretched bottle!
21:45You didn't really think you could get rid of me that easily, did you?
21:58Where do you think you're going?
21:59Flames that would melt the ice and the ice and the ice?
22:00I think you're going!
22:01Ah!
22:02Ah!
22:03Ah!
22:04Ah!
22:05Ah!
22:06Ah!
22:07Ah!
22:08Ah!
22:09Ah!
22:10Ah!
22:11Ah!
22:12Ah!
22:13Ah!
22:14Ah!
22:15Ah!
22:16Ah!
22:17Ah!
22:18Ah!
22:19Ah!
22:20Ah!
22:21Ah!
22:22Ah!
22:23Ah!
22:24Ah!
22:25Ah!
22:26Ah!
22:27Ah!
22:28Ah!
22:29Ah!
22:30Ah!
22:31Ah!
22:32Ah!
22:33Ah!
22:34Ah!
22:35Ah!
22:36Ah!
22:37Where are they? Do you see them?
22:41There they are!
22:49And so Monkey escaped and flew back to his waiting companions.
22:55But the Lords of Mischief were not finished with them yet.
23:07Lily stayed in the middle of the night.
