00:00In the mythical world of ancient China, a land of legendary monsters, evil witches, and sinister villains,
00:13the wise monk Tripitaka and his protector, Monkey, set out on a treacherous journey in search of the fabled Scrolls of Wisdom.
00:23Joined by Pigsy and Sandy, these four companions travel together through this strange and magical world,
00:34enduring perilous adventures and dangerous adversaries on their mission for the Emperor and all of China.
00:42The Legends of the Monkey King is China's greatest story.
00:48It is an expedition unlike any other ever taken.
00:53It is the journey to the west.
00:58The four companions, having left the king's palace behind them, soon came to a bleak mountainous region,
01:11where the wind blew round a wall of stone that seemed to touch the sky.
01:15This was the region of Cloudy Peak.
01:18In all their travels, they had not yet passed through such forbidding country.
01:26Wait! Can we find an easier and safer road than this one?
01:30Why, Pigsy, if I didn't know better, I'd swear that chattering sound was your teeth.
01:35No teeth of mine have ever chattered, and if you think I'm afraid, you're wrong.
01:39Then why don't you go ahead and scout the road for monsters?
01:42I'm probably the only one of us brave enough to confront the unknown.
01:46I think it would be an excellent idea if Pigsy were to take on that responsibility.
01:50Hmph. Thanks a lot.
01:52Cloudy Peak looked like the home of monsters. And it was.
01:57Even as Pigsy spoke, the evil red gnome arrived at a cave on the summit of Cloudy Peak
02:02that he shared with his equally evil brother, the blue gnome.
02:05Hmph.
02:08So, did you bring your little drawing expedition to a close?
02:12Yes, but don't fall over yourself with eagerness to see them.
02:15Sorry.
02:16I went to a lot of trouble to make these portraits of those travelers, and some appreciation is in order.
02:22Hmph.
02:23I wish I even deign to show them to you. At any rate, here they are, all four of them.
02:27And I plan to capture them before they go much further.
02:30Which one can make us immortal?
02:32At first I thought it was one of these two, but now I believe it's this one.
02:36There are four of them, so we'll need to send our warriors.
02:39Call them.
02:40Hmph.
02:41Gnome warriors, step forward.
02:43What?
02:44Ugh.
02:45How might we be of service?
02:47Let's go capture that monk and his companions.
02:49Yes, master.
02:50The evil gnomes, sure that Tripitaka knew the secrets of immortality, set off to capture the four innocent travelers.
02:57Scary looking place, but there are no monsters.
03:00Poor fellows don't know what they're missing. This place looks like it was made for monsters.
03:04Unfortunately for Pizzi, the blue gnome and his henchmen had spotted him as he rounded the last bend of this scary road.
03:16Hmph.
03:17Well.
03:18Ooh.
03:19Uh-huh.
03:20Nice try, monkey, but you're not such a master of disguise that that snubby little nose and sashaying walk don't give you away.
03:30I wasn't born yesterday.
03:31He thinks I look like this?
03:33Really at the best of times, but this is beyond the Call of Duty, old friend.
03:38Especially that forehead.
03:40Show him the drawings.
03:42That's your shape.
03:43Oh.
03:44I'll take his own hideous mug and he'll lose his lunch.
03:48Goodness.
03:49Will you look at that?
03:50Someone captured us on paper.
03:52But you know, whoever drew this made me way too fat.
03:55But at least you look better than you do now.
03:59Move it!
04:03Drop him!
04:04Well, we've got one, not the main one, but it's a start.
04:12We'll have them all in no time if they're as easy to catch as this one was.
04:16Once my friend Monkey hears about what you're up to, you're gonna have real trouble on your hands.
04:21Has your leader made you immortal?
04:24You won't get any information out of me, so save your bad breath.
04:27Warriors, take the prisoner away.
04:29He'll soon change his mind.
04:35All the same, we better be on our guard against this monkey character.
04:39He's a pipsqueak! Don't give him another fart!
04:43Meanwhile, the three remaining companions were worried about Pigsy's failure to return.
04:48Your impatience won't make him come any quicker.
04:51Come down, Monkey, and wait with us.
04:55Master, rather than waiting here, I think the best way to find Pigsy is to travel along the road that he left on.
05:01But the Blue Gnome and his warriors were already on the lookout, waiting for the travelers to follow Pigsy's path.
05:10There they are!
05:12Now they're in for it!
05:14But in order to capture the already suspicious pilgrims, the Blue Gnome needed to disguise himself.
05:19Following the path that Pigsy had traveled, Tripitaka, Monkey, and Sandy made their way through the woods.
05:32I am so tired. So many miles have I traveled on these weary legs.
05:37We shall help you. Try and stand up.
05:40Oh, good monk, I can no longer stand or walk, for I have come through these mountains on foot and are worn out.
05:46Do not worry, my friend. Monkey will be happy to carry you.
05:49Sure. Hop up onto my back.
05:52Be gentle, Monkey. Keep a nice, slow pace.
05:55Right. Easy does it.
05:58You call that slow?
06:01You're going to wear yourself out!
06:03It's true. You must be getting awfully tired.
06:05Not at all. I'm just starting to get warmed up.
06:08But Monkey was not as naive as he appeared to be.
06:11Must we stop here?
06:12Be quiet! You're not fooling anyone, old man. I know precisely what you are.
06:16Here goes!
06:18Monkey knew that a sudden drop of several thousand feet would call the Blue Gnomes bluff.
06:25Sure enough, Monkey was right.
06:28Now the gnome realized that he was up against a great power and that he needed to cast a spell quickly.
06:36Stop him, Mountain.
06:37Huh?
06:38Ah!
06:39Ah!
06:41Ah!
06:43Monkey lay trapped under the weight of a mountain and it seemed as if the Blue Gnom had beaten his mightiest adversary.
06:49Get this thing off of me right now!
06:50Whatever you're up to, you're not going to get away with it!
06:52And now, only Tripitaka and Sandy remained. And they were more vulnerable than ever without Monkey Bear beside them.
06:58Whoa!
06:59The evil Blue Gnom cast a spell and sent a giant cloud to bear down upon them. The travelers tried to fight it.
07:07It was hopeless. The Blue Gnom had won.
07:08Gnome brother!
07:09Have a look at what I picked up on the road!
07:10Finally, we got them!
07:11Huh? Where's the monkey?
07:12Don't worry about him. He's lying trapped. I'm not going to get them.
07:13The evil Blue Gnom cast a spell and sent a giant cloud to bear down upon them. The travelers tried to fight it.
07:18It was hopeless. The Blue Gnom had won.
07:27Gnome brother! Have a look at what I picked up on the road!
07:34Finally, we got them! Huh? Where's the monkey?
07:38Don't worry about him. He's lying trapped under a mountain.
07:41He's bound to escape. We must think of something better.
07:45I have. Don't worry.
07:47The Blue Gnome was sure he knew how to stop the mighty monkey. From their hiding place, he produced a magic calabash and a jade bottle.
07:56Warriors, step forward.
07:57Yes, master!
07:58What would you have us do?
08:00Go to the monkey. Take these with you and use them as you have been taught. And warriors, do not fail me.
08:07Your wish is our command.
08:09Still imprisoned under the mountain, monkey struggled to be free.
08:18Spirit of the mountain, show yourself!
08:25I hope you're not counting on me to help you.
08:27You have to. My friends are in danger. Free me!
08:30I wish I could, but I'm under orders from the Blue Gnome to crush you.
08:34Don't tell me you're afraid of that little weakling.
08:37I'm not afraid of anyone. I'm just doing my job.
08:40If you're so brave, get this thing off of me.
08:42Nothing doing.
08:47Hey, what do you think you're doing? Let me go!
08:49First move the mountain, then I will.
08:51Alright, alright.
08:52I've got to follow him.
08:57Monkey flew off in the same direction as the Blue Gnome.
09:00All the while, he kept a vigilant eye on the ground below.
09:04Huh?
09:05Suddenly, he spied a suspicious red glow on the road.
09:08Monkey knew this could only mean trouble.
09:10There are two people approaching, and I bet they work for the Blue Gnome.
09:13The Blue Gnome's warriors were about to stumble upon a strange wizard.
09:30Who are you?
09:31I am the ancient wizard of the mountains.
09:34If you're a wizard, let's see what kind of tricks you can do.
09:38Here's one you'll like.
09:41We can't be too careful, because we're searching these roads for a most dangerous monkey.
09:46Too bad. I was looking for assistant wizards.
09:51All the best ones are already taken?
09:54Hey, wait!
09:55Forget the monkey. We'd love to be your assistants.
09:59Take us on, please.
10:01Okay, wizard.
10:02I might consider it, if you have something to give me in return.
10:05Something to rival my golden calabash.
10:07Ah! What can your golden calabash do?
10:10Huh?
10:11Tell us.
10:12My golden calabash is able to swallow up the sky.
10:15I'd be more than pleased to demonstrate its power.
10:20Keep your eye on the sky.
10:22Huh?
10:23The golden calabash will move the heavens.
10:25When's it gonna start?
10:27They look the same to me.
10:28The golden calabash will begin when it's ready.
10:31If you're a wizard, it should do what you tell it to.
10:34Calabash? They're getting impatient.
10:39Swallow the sky up home.
10:41The golden calabash flew up into the heavens and swallowed up first the clouds,
10:45and then finally every last speck of light from the sky.
10:49Oh, great wizard, you've gone too far. The calabash ate the sun.
10:53What has been done can be undone.
10:56How does it work? Is there some kind of genie inside?
11:03It's the monkey! You've caught the very villain we've been sent out to find.
11:11We'll trade you anything you want for that calabash, wizard.
11:14I very much doubt you would have anything of enough value to possibly induce me to make a trade.
11:20Why, the treasures we're carrying possess extraordinary powers.
11:23When you call someone's name while you're holding this and he answers, he goes inside it.
11:29Alright, I shall make the trade with you.
11:31Once again, monkey had used his enemy's greed against them.
11:35Thank you, oh great one, thank you so much!
11:43Why, the massive scissors?
11:47And so monkey fooled the gnomes warriors and saved himself.
11:52Changing his form, he was confident that he could rescue his companions
11:56and then continue on their journey to the west.
12:05The evil red and blue gnomes had taken Tripitaka, Pigsy and Sandy prisoner.
12:10They were sure that Tripitaka could be forced to make them immortal.
12:14Our only hope is that monkey hasn't been captured and that he's on his way to rescue us.
12:18I'm sure he is!
12:19Master! Master!
12:20Master, we captured him!
12:22Then how is it I don't see him?
12:24He's imprisoned inside this golden calabash that was given to us by the ancient wizard of the mountain.
12:29It came to eat up the whole sky.
12:31Where are my treasures?
12:32We traded them.
12:33I want to see the monkey right now!
12:36If anyone was more anxious to see the golden calabash in action than the blue gnome,
12:40it was a certain little fly.
12:42Golden calabash work your wonders!
12:59They've traded our treasures for worthless junk!
13:02And to think I've put my trust in the two of you!
13:09Forgive us, master! Forgive us!
13:11We must call for help to defeat this monkey!
13:14I know, and I know who we must call on!
13:16The Bamboo Witch!
13:17I'll give you fools one more chance!
13:19Succeed at this task and you'll be redeemed!
13:22Otherwise, it's into the dungeon with you!
13:24Now go out and find the Bamboo Witch and bring her here to me!
13:27Yes, master!
13:28And so, the gnome warriors set off in the direction of the Bamboo Witch's cave,
13:36anxious to get back into the master's good graces and completely unaware that someone was keeping a very close eye on them.
13:42It was a long trek indeed, for the Bamboo Witch lived in a cave deep in the forest.
13:55The gnome warriors were successful in convincing the Bamboo Witch to return with them to their master's home, but only if they would carry her.
14:03Why are you stopping?
14:06Heavy load? I can make it light as air!
14:12Using the magic powers once given to him by the goddess Kuan Yin, Monkey had only to pluck a few magic hairs from his head to create two perfect copies of the gnome warriors.
14:25Then he turned himself into the witch.
14:27Why have we stopped? Move on!
14:32And so, the procession continued.
14:36I hear you have prisoners!
14:38Yes, come see!
14:39Huh?
14:41There's one missing!
14:42It's true, the monkey is temporarily still at large.
14:45Hehehehe!
14:47Well...
14:49We'll see what we can do about that!
14:51My friend Monkey can defeat a thousand like you with his eyes closed and his hands tied behind his back!
14:57Impedent pig!
14:58Now, now, you mustn't let him upset you!
15:00Think what a tasty supper he'll make!
15:02Oh, I wouldn't dream of making a meal out of him! He'd give me heartburn!
15:06Let's cut him down!
15:10Just because I'm big boned, doesn't mean you can disrespect me!
15:14Enough out of you!
15:15Not yet! We've many things to discuss before we can even think about feasting!
15:19But the pig's not going anywhere, is he?
15:22Huh?
15:24Once again, Monkey had come through for his friends.
15:28What's so funny?
15:30That's no witch, that's our friend Monkey!
15:32Then there's hope for us after all!
15:34I told you there would be!
15:37Well then...
15:38We need you, because your wisdom can guide us in defeating this monkey!
15:41I'd rather talk about how to defeat you!
15:45Huh?
15:49Too late. The evil gnomes realized who the witch really was.
15:52It's me! Surprise!
16:03It was a great disguise! Don't feel too bad!
16:07Stop him! Where are my two warriors?
16:10No! Don't go after them! You can't defeat them on your own!
16:21I have a weapon that'll do the trick!
16:24The blue gnome swooped out of his cave in hot pursuit of Monkey.
16:27Show yourself! Are you afraid?
16:29Afraid? Never, my friend!
16:32Ha ha!
16:34What can I do for you?
16:35I challenge you to fight if you dare!
16:37I'm in a bit of a rush, but I guess I've got time!
16:40Ha! I'll teach you to be cocky!
16:41I'll teach you to be cocky!
16:45Monkey was a valiant warrior, but the blue gnome had a nasty trick up his sleeve.
16:52A magic rope from which Monkey could not escape.
16:58And so Monkey was now imprisoned, along with his companions.
17:02So Monkey, he managed to get you too, huh?
17:04Don't worry, I'll find a way out of this one!
17:06It's not looking good since they got their bottle and calabash back.
17:09Magic staff, it's up to you now.
17:20Drink up now!
17:21Master! Master! The Monkey's twin brother is at the gate!
17:25He demands the immediate release of the pilgrims!
17:27He does? Well, he'll have to deal with us first, won't he?
17:31Ha ha! He will indeed!
17:34And our magic calabash!
17:40Who are you? What do you want?
17:42I'm Monkey's brother!
17:43I demand you release the four pilgrims you're holding prisoner!
17:48You want them set free? Then answer when I call your name!
17:51All right, I'll play along! The name's Monkey, like my brother!
17:55Monkey!
17:57Yes, here I am!
18:00And with that, Monkey was sucked into the blue gnome's magic calabash.
18:05So now we have not only the Monkey, but his upstart twin brother as well!
18:09When's he gonna settle down?
18:16Help! I'm melting! There's very little left of me!
18:24Well, I'd like to see that! Let's have a look inside, shall we?
18:27Don't open it, brother! It might be a trick!
18:29He can't get out!
18:31But the blue gnome had underestimated Monkey's magic powers.
18:34Huh? What's going on?
18:37Ha ha! Maybe he really is disappearing into thin air! Wouldn't that be nice?
18:41The red gnome peered inside the calabash, and it did appear that all that was left of Monkey were his head and shoulders.
18:48It's true! He is disappearing!
18:51The magic calabash is more effective than I thought!
18:55This is terrible! Monkey's in serious trouble!
18:57He knows what he's doing. No need to worry!
18:59Hey!
19:00It's me, Pigsy!
19:01I want you to swing back and forth as hard as you can!
19:04Uh-huh!
19:12What was that?
19:13Quickly!
19:15Huh?
19:16What kind of idiots would hang a portly fellow like me from the ceiling? I could've told you it wouldn't work!
19:22Nobody calls the gnome brothers idiots!
19:24While Pigsy created a diversion, Monkey made straight for the magic calabash, and replaced it with a fake.
19:32Master!
19:33Huh?
19:34There's yet another brother of that monkey banging on the outer gate!
19:37This is getting out of hand! How many brothers does he have?
19:41We've got to find a way to put a stop to this once and for all!
19:45Take it easy! There's room enough in my magic calabash for a thousand melting monkey brothers!
19:51You there! Prove you're one of the monkey brothers by answering when I call your name out!
19:59But Clever Monkey was ready to turn the tables this time!
20:02Alright, but only if you will too!
20:05I don't have to answer anything to anyone! After all, I'm the one holding the magic calabash! Not you!
20:10Ha ha ha ha! Everyone's got a magic calabash these days! Although, some of them are fakes!
20:17But...
20:18And some are real!
20:20Huh?
20:22I've got the real one! Yours is a fake!
20:25Hmm... Let's see you prove it then!
20:27You're on dangerous ground! I'm not playing!
20:30Naturally!
20:31My calabash is the real one and yours is a fraud!
20:34Then you need in fear a thing!
20:38Monkey, is that you?
20:41Mm-hmm!
20:42Huh?
20:44Is that you, Monkey?
20:45Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
20:48Ha ha!
20:49I'd give that calabash a good shake if I were you!
20:52Huh?
20:53Huh?
20:54Now, I'll skip my turn if you'll set the prisoners free!
20:56Huh?
20:57Gah!
20:59Call my name! I'm not afraid of you!
21:02Don't forget to answer!
21:04Hey, Blue Gnome!
21:08Yes! I'm the Blue Gnome!
21:12No sooner had he answered, than the true calabash began to work its magic!
21:16My brother's capture won't go unavenged!
21:25The Red Gnome flew off to find Monkey and defeat him once and for all!
21:29But Monkey found him first!
21:32However, the Red Gnome was no coward and turned to give battle!
21:37But he was no match for Monkey!
21:41There was nothing to do but run!
21:43How about it? Shall I call your name?
21:47The Red Gnome knew he was beaten and that his plans for achieving immortality for himself and his brother had failed!
21:54But Monkey wasn't his only problem!
21:56Huh?
21:58The Sage of the Mountains is coming to turn you back into your true form!
22:02Where's that pesky servant of mine?
22:04Here I am, O Great Sage!
22:07And where's your brother?
22:09He's tucked safely away inside this magic calabash!
22:12Since he's my servant, perhaps I should set him free!
22:15Of course! Great Sage, do the honors!
22:19Thank you!
22:23And where are my treasures?
22:25Don't look at me! I haven't seen any of them!
22:29Huh?
22:31Gotcha, Pigsy!
22:37Hey! Come back here!
22:39Oh well, that's as it should be!
22:41You surely belong with your rightful owner!
22:44Justice has been served!
22:45With these two back with me, your life will be easier!
22:49And so, the Sage of the Mountain returned to his heavenly realm with his two naughty servants,
22:55and the prisoners of Cloudy Peak were free to continue their journey to the west.
23:15A new home of thearemment, I'll have a new home my full navigation team.
23:20Bucking up the mountain with all things, and the men have to keep their feet away.
23:22And above the mountain as well, a north-way home is to keep their feet away.
23:26Luckily, I'm just telling you, if you can't.
23:28Go on, to the mountain and see the mountain.
23:30And to the mountain, the mountain very fast.
23:32And to the mountain is amazing!
23:35Go on, to the mountain, to the mountain while a mountain.
23:37And to the mountain!
23:39The mountain is veryleight!
23:41The mountain is very achievable!
