Journey to the West – Legends of the Monkey King Episode 1 English Dub "Free At Last / The Dragon"
Transcript
00:00In the mythical world of ancient China,
00:07a land of legendary monsters, evil witches, and sinister villains,
00:12the wise monk Tripitaka and his protector, Monkey,
00:16set out on a treacherous journey in search of the fabled Scrolls of Wisdom.
00:22Joined by Pigsy and Sandy, these four companions travel together through this strange and magical world,
00:34enduring perilous adventures and dangerous adversaries on their mission for the Emperor and all of China.
00:42The Legends of the Monkey King is China's greatest story.
00:48It is an expedition unlike any other ever taken.
00:54It is the journey to the West.
01:04Long ago, in ancient China, the once powerful and magical monkey
01:09was imprisoned under the mountain of Four Seasons for offending the gods.
01:14He hoped one day to be set free.
01:16Monkey!
01:17Just when he thought all the gods had forgotten him, the Goddess Kuan Yin came to visit him.
01:22Monkey!
01:23Huh?
01:24I've come from the South Seas to talk to you.
01:26Huh?
01:27Who are you? Show yourself!
01:29Don't you recognize my voice, Monkey?
01:32Goddess Kuan Yin? Is that you?
01:34Yes, it is I. And I have news that should please you.
01:38What news could please me?
01:40I've been trapped here for 500 years. I want to be free again.
01:45And you will be soon. The monk Tripitaka will set you free.
01:49And what must I do for him in return?
01:51You must join him on a pilgrimage to India.
01:54India?
01:55You will travel westward in search of the books of wisdom.
01:59That evening, the monk Tripitaka met with me, the Emperor of China.
02:05Your Majesty, we have many Buddhist temples in this country, but there is much we do not know.
02:11If someone were to travel to India and bring back the books of wisdom, the whole Chinese Empire would be enlightened.
02:18Sire, I am ready to make that journey.
02:21All the way to India?
02:23But, Tripitaka, such a journey would be long and very dangerous.
02:27Yes. I am well aware of that fact, Your Majesty.
02:31And even so, you're quite sure you want to do this?
02:33Sire, I am absolutely sure.
02:36Well, in that case, honored monk, tomorrow, you will leave for India.
02:43The departure ceremony will take place at the palace gate.
02:48The next morning, Tripitaka presented himself at the palace gate.
02:52He was about to embark on a journey that would be the most dangerous thing he had ever done in his life.
02:58Tripitaka, I wish you a safe journey to the west.
03:02May you find the wisdom we seek under the distant skies of India.
03:06Many thanks, Your Imperial Majesty.
03:09This bowl contains soil, the soil of your native China.
03:12Let it be a constant reminder of your homeland.
03:15I am leaving my beloved homeland for a while.
03:18But I'll return, bringing the books that will enlighten all of China.
03:26After setting out from the Imperial Palace, Tripitaka traveled alone for many days.
03:31With only his sturdy white horse to keep him company.
03:35At length, he drew near to the mountain of Four Seasons,
03:39where Monkey was lying imprisoned beneath the mountain.
03:42Monkey was waiting for Tripitaka to arrive to set him free.
03:46But he was beginning to doubt it would ever happen when...
03:50It's a monk! That must be Tripitaka!
03:54Hey, honored monk, please come here!
03:58Can you hear me? No, wait! Come back!
04:03Oh, he's gone.
04:07Earthy! Earthy! Earthy!
04:11You called, Monkey?
04:13Yes, I need you to go...
04:14Go and get you some lunch. I'll be happy to.
04:16How about worm noodles and mud sauce?
04:18No, Earthy. A monk just went by. I need to see him right away.
04:22After I get you some lunch?
04:25Forget about lunch, will you? The monk's name is Tripitaka. You must send him here.
04:30I'll go and do that right now.
04:33Yes, for lunch. Hurry up and get the monk, Earthy.
04:37Right.
04:38And don't, don't!
04:41Greetings!
04:46Huh?
04:48I hope I didn't frighten you, esteemed monk. Are you by any chance, Tripitaka?
04:52Yes, that's right, stranger. But how do you know my name?
04:55I'm afraid that would take too long to explain.
04:57But I've come to tell you there's somebody who wants to talk to you, so you have to turn back.
05:02I'm sorry, I can't do that. I must continue my westward journey.
05:07But this is very important. You have to turn back right now.
05:11I am sorry, but I cannot do that.
05:16Oh, yes, you can. Whether you like it or not.
05:21Huh?
05:22Rise, Earth! Rise!
05:26Higher! And higher!
05:29Rise, Earth! Rise! Rise! Rise! And make a slide to monkey!
05:45I'd better tell monkey he has a visitor coming.
05:52Tripitaka wouldn't turn back, so I had to give him a little nudge.
05:56Huh?
05:59Uh, if I were you, Earthy, I'd get out of the way!
06:02I'm Monkey. Pleased to meet you, Master.
06:05Master? Why do you call me that?
06:08Because I'm going to be your faithful companion from now on as you travel to India on your great quest.
06:14The journey will be long and full of danger.
06:17Don't you worry, Master. I'm not afraid.
06:19If you are ready to face hardship and danger, then you are welcome to come along.
06:23Uh, there's just one little problem. We have to get this mountain off me.
06:28But there are only two of us, and a whole army could not move this mountain.
06:32If you climb up to the summit and take off the golden seal, then I can handle the rest.
06:37Remove the golden seal.
06:39All right. I'll try.
06:41Heh. Thank you, Master.
06:44And so Tripitaka began the long climb up the mountain of Four Seasons.
06:50He was puzzled, but he felt in his heart that the goddess Kuan Yin wanted him to help set this strange monkey creature free.
06:57Huh? I can see the summit.
07:03Almost there.
07:07The golden seal.
07:11I have climbed the mountain in order to set monkey free from his rocky prison.
07:17May the lifting of this golden seal make it possible for monkey to escape from under the mountain.
07:22Rise up, golden seal, and set monkey free.
07:32Good news, monkey.
07:36Huh?
07:37When I reached the mountain top, the golden seal flew away.
07:53Oh, thanks, Master.
07:55But how will you get free?
07:57Just watch.
08:02Master, it's dangerous here. Get away as fast as you can.
08:05Oh...
08:08Hurry! You don't have a lot of time!
08:09Uh...
08:10Ah!
08:11Ah!
08:12Ah!
08:13Ah!
08:14Ah!
08:15Ah!
08:16Ah!
08:17Ah!
08:18Ah!
08:19Ah!
08:20Ah!
08:22Ah!
08:23Ah!
08:25Ah!
08:26Ah!
08:28Ah!
08:29Ah!
08:30Ah!
08:31Ah!
08:33Ah!
08:34Ah!
08:35Ahhhh!
08:50Monkey is truly powerful. Nothing remains of the mountain but a cloud of dust.
08:58I'm free!
09:05Monkey, you did it. You freed yourself from the mountain.
09:22I didn't do it, Master. We did. Teamwork set me free.
09:26And may teamwork bring us to India.
09:28You know, I'm really looking forward to our journey.
09:31Of that I am glad.
09:32Uh, would you mind turning around?
09:35As you wish, Monkey.
09:37I have to get dressed. I have a new set of clothes I've been given for the journey.
09:42They must be a gift from the Goddess Quan Yin.
09:45Well, how do I look, Master?
09:48You look like a true pilgrim. Thank you for saying so.
09:52And thank you for letting me travel with you.
09:57Please stand up, Monkey. You do not have to kneel before me.
10:02For we shall be true companions.
10:09It's a tiger. I'll handle this.
10:11Look, tiger.
10:21This is my magic staff.
10:26And it's about to change a fierce jungle cat...
10:30Into a harmless little lizard.
10:44Monkey, how did you do that?
10:46With my magic staff.
10:48And when I shrink it, the staff fits neatly...
10:51In my ear.
10:53Somehow, I don't think the lizard will be needing this anymore.
11:06So I'll wear it instead.
11:08Well, Master, I'd say we're ready to set out.
11:11Hmm. We have a long journey ahead of us.
11:14We could do it in an instant.
11:17In an instant? What do you mean?
11:19As you just saw, I have magic powers.
11:21I could use them to carry us all the way to India in the blink of an eye.
11:25Just say the word and I'll take us there.
11:27No, no. A good pilgrim does not use tricks to reach his goal.
11:31Only by facing hardship with courage can we hope to achieve enlightenment.
11:35Huh? But magic would be so much easier.
11:38The easy way may not always be the right way.
11:41I understand. No matter what hardships lie ahead, I'll stay by your side, Master.
11:48And so, Chipitaka and Monkey had become companions and were ready to set out together on their perilous journey to the West.
12:06It had not been long since Chipitaka had freed his new companion Monkey from imprisonment.
12:10They both knew perilous dangers lay ahead.
12:13But Monkey was happy. He was free and had his powers restored.
12:17However, his lack of seriousness about their quest bothered Chipitaka.
12:22Must you fly around like that? Come and walk beside me.
12:27I'm stretching my limbs, Master. After such a long time imprisoned under a mountain, it's good to be free again. Ha! Ha!
12:36This is not a game. Remember, we have a very long journey ahead of us, Monkey.
12:43My good Monk, you're far too serious!
12:46Ha-hoo! Ha-ha-hoo!
12:48You must be getting weary. Why don't we stop for a rest, Master?
12:55Hmm.
12:57I'll tie up the horse.
13:01Monkey, there's no need to tie him up.
13:06We won't be here long.
13:08But you're exhausted. You need a good rest.
13:11You're right, Monkey. I am. But if we delay here too long, we won't get very far by nightfall. So I'd rather keep travelling.
13:19If you want to travel far, let me carry you by magic.
13:22True pilgrims don't use magic.
13:24Then pardon me for saying so, but true pilgrims are fools.
13:27If that is how you feel, Monkey, then perhaps you shouldn't travel to India at all.
13:32Huh? Master, wait. I want to go to India with you. We can fly there in an instant.
13:40No, I'll go on foot. Alone.
13:42Alone?
13:44But Master, don't you want us to go to India together?
13:47Not by magic.
13:49Fine.
13:50No, no, no, no, no.
14:05Greetings, stranger. I did not see you there.
14:08But I saw you. Why did you part from your companion?
14:11Because he is far too headstrong to travel humbly by foot as a pilgrim.
14:16Are you not a learned man? Could you not offer guidance to the headstrong monkey?
14:21He is no ordinary monkey.
14:24And you are no ordinary man. Here is a gift for your companion. Wearing it will make him less headstrong.
14:31Thank you, kind lady. But I fear that my companion has gone for good.
14:35Oh, no. He will return. You can count on that. The monkey will return.
14:40Hmm? But how do you know he'll return? Who... Who are you?
14:49Huh? Goddess Quan Yin. I should have known.
14:58Chippitaka, the gift I have given you is a magical headband. Once monkey puts it on, you can use it to make him more cooperative.
15:08I am also giving you a golden parchment, on which is written the magic spell, which you will recite whenever you want the headband to take effect.
15:16This should make monkey less headstrong.
15:19After his argument with Chippitaka, monkey flew to the seashore to think things over.
15:26Ow! Hey!
15:28A chance encounter with a pesky squid was about to leave monkey to someone who would prove to be a valuable source of wisdom.
15:38Ha! Ha! Ha! Stop!
15:46Huh? You dare to drop food on my head?
15:49Sea King! Huh?
15:50Wait!
15:51Oh! I was just about to punish that squid!
15:53Oh, why?
15:54Because he disrespectfully dropped food on my head.
15:57I assure you, he won't do it again. May I release him?
16:00Oh, all right.
16:05I thought you were on a pilgrimage.
16:07Hmm?
16:08So what are you doing here?
16:10I decided to quit the pilgrimage, Sea King.
16:13Tripitaka wouldn't let me use my magic to take him to India.
16:17So, instead of wasting my valuable time walking beside a stubborn monk, I left.
16:22Hmm. And do you think the Goddess Quan Yin would be pleased if she knew?
16:25Mm-mm.
16:27No, because a good pilgrim doesn't run away from hardship or abandon his companions.
16:32You must go back to Tripitaka.
16:33You're right. Thank you for the advice, Sea King.
16:36Farewell!
16:37Meanwhile, Tripitaka had set off on his own and reached Eagle Gorge, an obstacle that no ordinary mortal could cross.
16:48Eagle Gorge. It's too steep to climb down and too wide to jump across. I suppose I'll have to turn back.
16:55Don't turn back, Master.
16:57Monkey.
16:58Yes, Master. I've returned. I'm sorry. I should never have left like that.
17:03Master, tell me, where did that bundle come from? I've never seen it before.
17:06It comes from Quan Yin and it contains a gift for you.
17:09A gift for me? May I open it?
17:11Certainly.
17:12Oh! It's a cap! Ha! It fits perfectly!
17:23Hmm? It's getting tighter.
17:25What's going on?
17:26Headband, show him your power.
17:29It hurts!
17:30Headband, stop.
17:31Huh? This is no gift. It's some kind of magic, isn't it?
17:34Headband, tighten.
17:37Headband, stop.
17:38Master, the cap came off, but the golden headband is still stuck to my head. Couldn't you please say a spell to take it off?
17:43I'm sorry, but Quan Yin only gave me the spell to tighten it.
17:47But why on earth would you want to tighten it?
17:49It is to help you learn to behave, Monkey.
17:51I always behave, Master.
17:53We shall see.
18:04Stand back!
18:13What are we to do now, Monkey?
18:15We have no horse.
18:27Dragon!
18:30I know you're down there!
18:33Dragon of the Gorge! Come on and face me!
18:38You dare speak to me that way?
18:40You scared off our horse! Now find it!
18:43No!
18:44No!
18:45No!
18:46No!
18:47No!
18:48No!
18:49No!
18:50No!
18:51No!
18:52No!
18:53No!
18:54No!
18:55No!
18:56No!
18:57No!
18:58No!
18:59No!
19:00No!
19:01No!
19:03No!
19:07Earthy!
19:09Yes, Monkey? What is it?
19:11Tell me about the dragon who lives in this gorge.
19:14Oh, the dragon of Eagle Gorge is a powerful creature who has caused mischief in these pods for years.
19:20Then I will subdue him.
19:22If anyone can do it, you can.
19:24But why waste your energy subduing him by force?
19:27If you visit the goddess Quan Yin, she'll tell you how to do it peacefully.
19:31Good idea, Earthy!
19:32I'll go and see her right now!
19:35You stay with Tripitaka until I return!
19:37Greetings, Monkey.
19:50Huh?
19:51I believe there are two reasons why you have come here today.
19:56That's right!
19:57The first reason is the headband you had Tripitaka give me. I can't take it off.
20:02Then leave it on.
20:03Goddess, you could take it off my head if you wanted.
20:06The headband is staying where it is, Monkey. You must learn to live with it.
20:10All right.
20:11Now, the second reason I've come here is that the dragon of Eagle Gorge scared away our horse.
20:17I told the dragon to find the horse, but he escaped into the river, Goddess. What should I do?
20:21Return to Eagle Gorge. I will be there soon to deal with the dragon and to give you a new horse.
20:26Many thanks. I'll see you at the gorge.
20:36Dragon of the gorge! Quan Yin is on her way!
20:39Tripple in her approach!
20:44But the goddess is my friend!
20:46Dragons don't have friends!
20:48Dragon of the gorge! Monkey! Cease your fighting immediately!
21:07Who is this insolent monkey goddess? I've never seen him before!
21:11He is a pilgrim traveling westward to India.
21:14Oh, to India! I've almost wanted to travel to India!
21:17And you will, dragon, for you are joining the pilgrimage.
21:24What's going on?
21:30Settle down! Whoa!
21:31Whoa!
21:37That's better!
21:55Dragon, I've turned you into a horse so you can be a loyal companion to these pilgrims.
22:01As for you, monkey, I'm going to place magic hairs on your head. Use them whenever you're in trouble.
22:09Oh! Thank you for all your help, goddess.
22:12Now it is time for you to return to Trippitaka. I want you to stay at his side from now on.
22:18You can count on me!
22:22Run, dragon horse!
22:23Master, Quan Yin gave us a new horse! Isn't he magnificent?
22:35I've never seen such a powerful looking horse.
22:38That's because he used to be the dragon of the gorge.
22:40Quan Yin transformed him into a horse for us. Now we can continue on with our pilgrimage.
22:45Then let's be on our way.
22:48Farewell!
22:50Farewell and good luck!
22:52And so, with their new dragon horse, our travelers continued their journey to the west.
22:57The journey to the west.
23:27There's the man named Felipe, see him on the river.
23:31Just the river and elesiden from the east.
23:33Enjoy the day!
23:34I'm not young!
23:35You have watched that aren't there yet.
23:37You don't love one, yourها obec Anyway.
23:40You do love the needs of the Eenie horse here!
23:42It's durst mean water!
23:44It's bissack ironed in the melanchise.
23:48gobierno.
23:50He desillred because he specifically has a visit.
