00:00How many jobs in college football right now would you say are better than Penn State?
00:06Start counting them off.
00:07Give me the names.
00:07Ohio State's a better job.
00:09It's okay.
00:10Alabama's a better job.
00:11Georgia's a better job.
00:12Texas is a better job.
00:14Here's what I'm going to say this.
00:15Michigan is a better job.
00:16Michigan is a better job.
00:18That's five.
00:18Miami, better job because you're in the ACC.
00:21They don't have much money, but they do have proximity, and I think they have good boosters
00:25that are helping them out.
00:26So here's the next one.
00:30Is Tennessee a better job?
00:31That's a great question.
00:33I don't know.
00:34So here's the ones I'm going to say.
00:36Is A&M a better job?
00:37A&M is a better job.
00:39All right.
00:39So we're to seven.
00:40So here's the other thing.
00:41It's a better job.
00:42How about Oregon?
00:43The time you spend there might not be.
00:45Oregon is a better job, in my opinion, because of where they are and the funding behind it,
00:51and Dan Lanning has done a really nice job there.
00:54Here's one, though.
00:55Is USC a better job, Bob, than Tennessee?
00:58That's a great question.
00:59It really is, because I think they have the support from the alumni.
01:03The question is, do you have the passionate fan base?
01:06The one thing Penn State does have is they have passion.
01:10Now, they don't fill 110 when they're playing some bad non-conference games, and maybe when
01:16they're struggling a little bit.
01:17And it's really hard.
01:18It's a big stadium.
01:19Ohio State always has sold out.
01:21Michigan, there's been times when they haven't, when they've been struggling.
01:24But Penn State, it is an unbelievable environment.
01:26The question is the proximity and where you're at.
01:30When you're in the middle of Pennsylvania, the recruiting base in Pittsburgh isn't what
01:34it used to be.
01:35Philadelphia is still pretty good.
01:36But you have to go to the DMV.
01:38You've got to go to New York, New Jersey to bring guys in.
01:40And now you're going to the middle of nowhere.
01:43And James Franklin had lamented this.
01:45You have to fly to Harrisburg to fly out on the big 767s because the runway isn't long
01:50enough to get out of Happy Valley.
01:52So that's also a detriment with the program.
01:55Is it top 10?
01:57I think it's right on the fringe.
01:59Yeah.
01:59You could make the argument that it is 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, depending on your preference
02:07of where you want to go and what you might value.
02:10I'm going to ask you a follow-up question, Bob.
02:12Do it.
02:12And I know you said top 10.
02:14This is a little bit different.
02:15Now, in this era of college football, what are determining factors if it is a good job?
02:22Not just the school.
02:23What are the things that are required for it to be a good job as a head football coach?
02:28I would say location, recent success that they've had.
02:32Florida had another job.
02:32Guess what?
02:33You ain't going there.
02:34You ain't getting that job if they have recent success.
02:37You go into that job because that's...
02:39Penn State had recent success.
02:41I mean, the kids, the people you're recruiting have seen them be good.
02:45Yes.
02:46Right?
02:46Like, that matters a lot.
02:48You know, like, Florida hasn't really been relevant in a while.
02:52You know?
02:52Like, that's a big deal.
02:53Like, Texas wasn't.
02:55Now they've gotten back there.
02:56You know, when was the last time USC was really relevant?
02:59I mean, it's been 20 years since they had the Bush push with Matt Leiner.
03:04I know.
03:04Since Pete was there and they were rolling.
03:06And they've had, like, little spikes where they've been okay, you know, is Oklahoma a better job than Penn State?
03:14Like, that's...
03:14So, I would say on that, oh, man, that is a good one.
03:18I think, like you said, Bob, I think they are fringes.
03:21Yeah.
03:21That might be a push.
03:22That's a preference thing, I think.
03:24Do you want to be in the SEC?
03:25Do you want to live in Happy Valley versus Norman?
03:27You know, maybe you can go down to Texas.
03:28I would take Norman.
03:29I would take Norman.
03:30Well, to go down and get talent out of Texas.
03:33Yes.
03:33Yes.
03:33I think you've got to have alumni, president, athletic director that are all on board and committed to winning.
03:39And you need to have a fan base that shows up and supports.
03:43And you need to have a fan base.
