00:00And one of the things that's interesting, if you go look at the coaches poll that just came out and
00:07you look at that, what's interesting, what they do in there is they obviously they have the teams that are
00:12rated, but then they also, if you look at it, a lot of times they'll have their first place votes.
00:20And then they'll have their total points. Ohio State had by far and away the most first place votes with
00:2638. Oregon had six. Georgia had seven at three. Texas had two at number four. Notre Dame had five at
00:35five. Indiana comes in at number six.
00:38Indiana had 14 first place votes, but is number six. And so to do a little bit of math on
00:46this, the fact that that many first place votes enter at number six means there's probably a number of people
00:52that if they didn't vote them first, they're probably voting them eighth, ninth, 10th, maybe.
00:59Does that surprise you that there's that big of a swath of how people still view Indiana, despite the fact
01:08that they've lost two games over two years?
01:10Well, I know sporting is his preseason. Number one has Indiana. Number one. And it's kind of the, you know,
01:15the we we've talked about it before, like the Ric Flair principle.
01:18Like to me, you've got it. If this if it were Georgia, Alabama or Ohio State coming off a national
01:24title and you had them at number one, nobody would blink.
01:26You're like, oh, yeah, it makes sense. You know, you probably wouldn't even look at the roster.
01:31I think Indiana has enough pieces back to defend that ranking. They should be number one.
01:38And I think some people maybe think that way. Hey, I'm just going to put the defending national champion back.
01:43What's interesting is Georgia having that many votes as well. You know, that means that there's a certain amount of
01:48respect in probably an SEC country for the two time defending national champions.
01:52But I did look at that as well. I always look at the first place votes because the fact that
01:57we have six different schools, Bobby, how many that we'd have to go back and look at some of the
02:01previous polls.
02:02There's not many years where you have at least six teams, all of which I think are national championship caliber
02:08with first place votes.
02:11No, I don't think so. Now, is this a situation where teams are most likely wanting to see them get
02:16out and actually play a game, see if they still have that talent from last year?
02:20Or are you going to have to wait until they meet an opponent like Ohio State, like an Oregon and
02:24see like once that talent equates, are they able to go out there and compete?
02:28Because I feel like this offseason with the transfer portal, Josh Hoover, all those guys, like it seems like they
02:33have the talent.
02:34But like you said, they just don't have the brand and the name behind it.
02:37So is that where they just need to see it, see them go out there and actually play?
02:41Or are they waiting for that high caliber game?
02:44You know, one of my editors, Elliot Pano, he's an Iowa grad.
02:47He hates preseason polls. And me and him have this argument every year where, you know, the polls don't matter.
02:53They shouldn't rank anybody till after the third week of the season.
02:57And I would say, no, I love looking at the polls now.
03:02I love seeing how wrong we are at the end of the year.
03:04You know, like who were we really wrong about?
03:06But at the end of the day, I think one of the things about college football is so fun is
03:10you have the number next to the name.
03:12And it does change so much in September.
03:14So I don't mind seeing a team like this time last year.
03:17You know, Texas was right there.
03:19Ohio State's always going to be in the top five.
03:21But can you hold on to that ranking?
03:22And, you know, which teams are going to so to your point, Steele, yes, these teams may shift around a
03:28little bit.
03:29But you tell me which one's not a national championship contender out of Indiana, Oregon, Ohio State.
03:35You tell me that like Texas and Georgia aren't going to be in the mix or Notre Dame.
03:39And there is a ton of hype around this Notre Dame team.
03:41And I'm wondering how they're going to handle that.
03:43I didn't I guess I maybe underestimate.
03:46I know they're going to be really good and I think they can be national championship good.
03:50But I'm feeling like they're getting hyped.
03:52You forget about the Notre Dame hype machine and how quickly it can go out of control.
03:57Well, and you talk about the Notre Dame hype machine, but I'm a little surprised that they were ranked fifth.
04:01I thought looking at what they're bringing back and how good they are, that that might be a team that
04:06is probably ranked ahead of Texas, you know, maybe ranked ahead of Georgia and might be sitting there in that
04:11three spot.
04:12Yeah.
04:13And I wouldn't object to it either.
04:15But there's a lot to like about Oregon.
04:17And I think I've said that on here a couple of times where when we were putting together our Sporting
04:22News Preview magazine, you look at what they have coming back on defense around guys like Amari Washington and Brandon
04:29Finney, Coy Perich out of the portal, Mateo Yoongalele.
04:33I've only got to say that name for like one more year, hopefully, at least at the college side.
04:39But yeah, they're going to be intensely talented.
04:43And having that Oregon-Ohio State game again in the regular season, part of the disappointment, it's not disappointing, but
04:49I feel like, don't you guys think we're going to see some rematches between like an Ohio State and Indiana,
04:56Ohio State and Oregon, those three teams being playoff frequent flyers?
05:01I think we could see that any one of those combinations play each other twice this year, maybe even three
05:06times.
