00:00I'm Garrett and in this series I'm exploring Italy for 10 days with my wife Lauren.
00:07So we just boarded our train in Carence.
00:10We are headed to Pisa San Juan.
00:14We are headed to Pisa for the afternoon.
00:17Our end destination today is Rio Maggiore in Cinque Terre.
00:21We are going to stop, check our luggage, all of this luggage.
00:24My luggage offer in Pisa goes to the Leaning Tower, get some lunch for the afternoon, and then continue on the chicken tail.
00:31I always loved to buy souvenirs that are authentic or straight from the source.
00:37So it was really cool to be able to buy the balsamic vinegar, the olive oil, the lembrusco right off the vineyards where it's produced and bottled.
00:46However, today, after carrying three bottles of lembrusco, a bottle of olive oil, and four bottles of balsamic vinegar,
00:56I'm definitely trying to figure out how we're going to get all of this home.
00:59Should I just keep buying stuff? I think I should keep buying stuff.
01:03No.
01:05Yeah, I'm going to keep buying stuff.
01:08We made it to Pisa Central train station.
01:11We found a bag check, which was really nice.
01:13I think it was about 12 euro for a locker that's supposed to hold up to four large suitcases.
01:17So we're going to go store our bags and then head into the city.
01:22Let's go.
01:24They look a little smaller than advertised.
01:27We'll see if we can get all of our stuff out.
01:32She's a master packer.
01:33I think she can do that.
01:39Right angle.
01:40It's all in there.
01:42You get to go.
01:43Feels good to be bag free.
01:45We just crossed the Arno River.
02:04You can see behind me here.
02:06We are going to go to an oysteria Lauren found while doing some research before we go see the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
02:11I think we found a popular business spot and we might be a little underdressed.
02:24To start with, we got some bruschetta with tomatoes.
02:25Looks like some basil and a drizzle of olive oil.
02:26Go ahead and grab you a piece there.
02:27Oh yeah, you're not getting all this.
02:28Put it up in the...oh.
02:29You're not even gonna see the camera.
02:30You just went straight for me.
02:43We've got some bruschetta with tomatoes, looks like some basil and a drizzle of olive oil.
02:49Go ahead and grab you a piece there.
02:51Oh yeah, you're not getting all this.
02:52Put it up in the, oh, you're not even going to see the camera, you just went straight forward.
02:58Oh, man down on the phone!
03:00So I think this noodle, or this pasta, is called papadaria, I'll put the word there.
03:06It's basically a large flat noodle that originates from the region of Tuscany.
03:12And it's typically about a two to three centimeters in width, just a large flat noodle.
03:19And this is a wild boar sauce with mushroom and olives, which is also a local dish in Tuscany.
03:26So I'm going to try. I know I'll offend all of the Italians by trying to say what it is, but that's my plate.
03:32And I got the wild boar stew.
03:34It kind of looks like I got some olives hanging around here with a little bit of cornbread.
03:39I'm super excited to try it. It looks like the meat's super tender.
03:43We got some bread over yonder.
03:48He's on one this morning, y'all.
03:49I'm a star. A big, bright, shining star.
03:54Yay!
03:55I found a vegan koala bear.
03:56I think all koala bears might be vegan. I don't know that for sure, but I'm pretty sure they love bamboo.
04:11A lot of tour groups, and a samba sandwich.
04:26Time for some quick facts about the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
04:30So this whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
04:34You have the Duomo behind me.
04:36The Leaning Tower of Pisa was the bell tower for the Duomo originally.
04:40You can also go all the way to the top, which is very cool.
04:43So construction started around 1173, and it finished in the 14th century in 1399.
04:49The height of the tower is 57 meters on its tallest side, and it's about 1 meter shorter on its shortest side.
04:55Great job, Garrett.
04:58So it cost about 27 euros to get a full pass to see everything while you're here.
05:02Due to the short amount of time we had, we opted out.
05:05However, it would be really cool to go to the top of the Leaning Tower.
05:12Whatcha doing, Garrett?
05:14I was trying to touch the top of the tower with my tongue.
05:17Everyone's got to get their perfect photo pretending to hold.
05:23Anyone know what this little dude's doing?
05:27It kind of sounds like it's cutting grass, but surely not.
05:32Garrett keeps saying pizza instead of Pisa, but I think that means he's got pizza on the brain,
05:37so we're going to have to go get some as soon as we get to Cinque Terre.
05:40It's like a bike bar, except you pedal yourself.
05:43There's no booze.
05:45Apparently they're quite popular.
05:47I think there's booze involved with that group.
05:49We were headed to the train station, but we needed some espresso first.
05:56So our tour guide yesterday was a sommelier.
05:59I can't pronounce that word, but basically a certified wine tester.
06:03It's very hard to get, very prestigious from what I hear.
06:06But he taught us how to really take in the notes of the different types of wine.
06:10He taught us how to swirl it.
06:12He taught us how to smell it.
06:13He taught us how to taste it.
06:15And it was great.
06:16But it kind of has me in tune with my inner smell and my senses.
06:19So when I tasted that espresso that we just had, I tasted some hints of cherry.
06:23And now I feel like I've just opened up a whole new window of my life.
06:28Alright, now we're headed back to the package locker.
06:32Fingers crossed that all of our luggage is still safe and there.
06:45Taking a nap.
06:47If not a head rest.
06:49Caught Lauren smelling some bees.
06:50I don't think we can put that with our bags.
06:51It smells so good.
06:52Am I recording?
06:53Yes.
06:54So if I'm being honest, I didn't have the greatest first impressions of Pisa when we got off the
07:10train.
07:11There's just a lot of tourists like all rushing to the package lockers and then kind of running
07:15over to where Leaning Tower is and like all of those restaurants over there.
07:20But where the city really shines is just its other streets.
07:23We stumbled upon this farmer's market with loads of plants, fresh produce, vendors selling
07:28their cheeses, their wines.
07:30And it was just great to walk around and really see the city from a different angle.
07:34There's definitely more to the city than the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
07:37It's definitely the most iconic, but honestly not my favorite part of the city.
07:41I think honestly these little markets are definitely where it's at its best.
07:46Moment of truth.
07:47Let's see if our stuff's here.
07:50So if you're only coming to Pisa for a very short time and you're coming from the train
07:54or wherever you're coming from and you have a lot of luggage, we recommend you find one
07:57of these places like we did that lets you store your luggage.
08:01We had about like three to four hour luggage storage.
08:04Yeah, all of our stuff is still here.
08:06It's still here.
08:07So now I gotta carry this wine back to the train.
08:10It's one of those things that's like in the back of your mind the whole time you're out.
08:14You're like, okay, I know that it's probably safe.
08:17There's like a 500 euro a bag insurance policy or something.
08:20But you just keep thinking in the backyard like what if my laptop's gone?
08:23What if my wallet's gone?
08:24So I mean of course keep your passport with you, your vaccine card, which you need to do
08:28pretty much anything here.
08:29But thankfully all of our stuff is still here.
08:32Ah, there it is.
08:33Laspezia, platform 5, 8616.
08:39So something our guide was telling us yesterday is that if the rain is coming over the mountains
08:47towards Cinque Terre then it's just going to be a light sprinkle.
08:50But if the rain is coming from the sea then we're probably going to get completely rained out.
08:55And the good thing is it's looking pretty ominous over those fountains.
08:59A lot of the time on this train we've been going through these tunnels.
09:01And every time we go through a tunnel I just think of the same premiere trip where he's like,
09:05Miscuzzi.
09:06I don't know.
09:07We'll put the clip in here.
09:09What the hell are you doing?
09:10Miscuzzi.
09:11Miscuzzi.
09:12Miscuzzi.
09:13I feel like that movie is something that I watched like in middle school or something
09:16stupid where like all of the jokes have just stuck with me.
09:18Anybody else?
09:19Hi, there it is.
09:20Oh, this is beautiful.
09:21Let's go.
09:22Prettiest train station I've ever been to, hands down.
