00:00Welcome to Kyoto, where every moment feels like a step into another world.
00:04It's our first full day here and we're already immersed in the city's rich culture and history.
00:08Last night we indulged in some mouth-watering meat at a local restaurant before visiting the Yurina Shrine to learn the art of Japanese prayer.
00:15Today we're up early to explore the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine, which has been captivating visitors for centuries.
00:34Fushimi Inari is dedicated to the Shinto god of rice, Inari.
00:46And this is supposed to be one of the most important shrines for that god.
00:50This is so cool.
00:51Inariyama is known for having almost 10,000 tori.
00:55And a tori is a gate that symbolizes the entrance to a Shinto shrine.
01:00They're actually donated by people who are grateful for their wishes coming true.
01:05The gates are so big, it's almost hard to describe how large they are until you see them up close in person.
01:11It's so peaceful just wandering through all the gates, taking a look at all the scenery, saying hello to all the foxes.
01:17It is just beautiful here.
01:19Foxes were thought to be Inari's messengers, so you can see these foxes everywhere throughout the shrines.
01:25They're usually holding a little message in their mouth, so be on the lookout for those when you come.
01:30I think a lot of people don't hike all the way up, so a lot of people stop halfway.
01:35Don't worry about taking your pictures down below, just keep going, get up top, and it's beautiful.
01:39And you have it much more to yourself.
01:42Nice.
01:43Just this.
01:45I have no clue if you're supposed to do that.
01:48I just saw other people doing it, so I hope it brings me good luck or something.
01:51Yeah, hopefully not bad luck.
01:53I didn't do it, so I'm the control.
01:55It felt gentle.
01:56It felt loving.
01:57It was beautiful.
01:58We got to the crosswoods, which is a good view of Kyoto.
02:01We decided not to go all the way to the top due to time, so we're headed back down now.
02:07We bought one of these little cats with a fortune inside for our friend.
02:10And if you get a bad fortune, you're supposed to tie it on the shrine so it doesn't come true.
02:13If you get a good fortune, you're supposed to take this with you and keep the little idol.
02:18But since it's a gift, we're just going to hope that it's good and if it's bad...
02:21Sorry, Mike.
02:22Make sure you get here early.
02:24It gets very crowded.
02:26Alright, let's go get some coffee.
02:38I know we're at Starbucks, but they had the tatami mat, so it felt like we had to do it.
02:42Same ice latte, just on the ground.
02:44Alright, this afternoon Lauren and I are exploring Ninensaka.
02:47It's this beautiful street with a bunch of shops, restaurants, and little coffee shops.
02:51And there's a lot of people walking out in traditional Japanese outfits, which is really cool to see.
02:56So we're just exploring, eating a lot of good food, and then we're going to leave.
03:01So let's go find some food now.
03:03More food.
03:05Rice cake, kamoki.
03:07I can't quite place it.
03:08It kind of has like a burnt taste to it, but it's interesting.
03:14This is called a tagaku fried sweet potato with some soy sauce.
03:18That one's my favorite.
03:19The mochi rice cake wasn't my thing.
03:21I want to say it right in front of the shopkeeper, but skip it.
03:24The burnt taste was really interesting.
03:26So it has like a glassy soy sauce glaze, but it definitely has like, I don't know, like a burnt texture that you can taste on the back of your tongue and do like sweet mochi better.
03:34Happy?
03:35Dessert before lunch.
03:36I am loving all of the matcha goods.
03:37I got an iced matcha latte with brown sugar syrup and a matcha tiramisu.
03:50Mm-hmm.
03:51Very good.
03:52We just had lunch at Masaichi.
03:55It's this really small restaurant that only has like four tables and we got to sit on the traditional tatami mats and we had a delicious meal.
04:03I ordered like a sashimi platter, which was like a traditional Japanese meal with the sashimi and a bunch of little side dishes.
04:11It was like rice and soba noodles with some tofu as well.
04:15Lauren had some shrimp tempura.
04:17It was out of this world.
04:18We highly recommend it.
04:20And the chef was so cute and so sweet.
04:22He said goodbye to us as we walked out, but really great experience.
04:25Definitely recommend it.
04:26It is cash only.
04:27Um, so make sure you don't make our mistake, but very much worth it.
04:30We're headed to Kiyomizo Diara.
04:32It's about a 10 minute walk from here.
04:34So you can pay a hundred yen to get a message at the temple that we're at.
04:39But it's only in Japanese, so Lauren doesn't know what it says and we're trying to translate it.
04:44Open the road and wait for the month.
04:46I don't know what that means.
04:47I think it's good.
04:48If anyone can translate this for me, please let me know.
04:50According to Google Translate, I think it's good.
04:53So I'm going to take it with me, but I would love to know.
04:55Kiyomizo Diara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a massive wooden stage and stunning views.
05:02Just finished at the temple.
05:04It was beautiful.
05:05Now we're about to head back to our hotel, freshen up real quick.
05:08And then we have a cooking class tonight.
05:10So we're going to start walking that way.
05:12We were almost late, but we made it.
05:16And I'm very excited.
05:17I am too.
05:18I love ramen.
05:19And I want to learn how to make it.
05:20Here we go.
05:23Roll it.
05:25Sugar.
05:26Soy sauce.
05:27I don't know yet.
05:28My dough.
05:29I got to get the body into it.
05:30My hands are like all red.
05:32My poor face.
05:33Garrett was over there with those weak punches.
05:34Yeah, because you're doing weird things.
05:35Oh, I got to do good.
05:36It's the perfect noodle.
05:37I just kind of want to cook this and eat one big noodle with mine.
05:38I like big noobs.
05:39Like a thick noobs.
05:40I like a thick noobs.
05:41I like a thick noobs.
