00:00Good morning from Marini, Venice.
00:10We had an extremely long travel day.
00:12We flew from DFW to London Heathrow.
00:14We had like a five-hour layover,
00:16and thanks to Lauren's status,
00:18we got to sleep, and these nice little pod things,
00:20they like lifted your feet up,
00:22and then you put this thing around,
00:24and it was like nice and pitch black,
00:26so that was great.
00:27And then we flew into Venice.
00:28I drank all of the free champagne,
00:30had some sushi even,
00:32and Garrett just had nuts and bananas.
00:36Actually, Garrett had bananas pretty much the entire day.
00:40Getting from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Venice
00:43is actually super easy.
00:45They have these ATVO buses that run,
00:47I think about every half hour or hour.
00:49You just get a ticket from the airport,
00:51there's kiosks everywhere that say ATVO,
00:53and you hop on one of these buses,
00:55and they take you here.
00:56And so the benefit about our hotel
00:58is that it's actually right there.
01:02And that's super great because that means
01:03that we don't have to lug our suitcases over bridges.
01:06The streets are not super level.
01:08If you are staying at a hotel that's further away,
01:11they have public transport in the form of a boat.
01:14It's like a water metro,
01:16and you can get tickets right over there,
01:17right next to the bus station,
01:18and it will take you along the Grand Canal,
01:20and drop you off,
01:21and hopefully that will shorten your walk on the streets.
01:24So for dinner last night,
01:26we went to Dal Moro's pasta shop.
01:28We wanted something kind of quick and easy
01:29because we were feeling very jet-lagged.
01:31So we got some fresh pasta to go,
01:33and while we were in there,
01:34we kept seeing signs like,
01:35don't sit on the bridges and eat your pasta,
01:37obviously, because you're blocking people
01:39from getting where they need to go.
01:40So we kind of just walked around the city
01:42and ate our pasta,
01:43and it was really a great way to see the city
01:45and have a good evening.
01:46All of this was like 16 euros.
01:52Tight groins.
01:54First stop of any good day is always some coffee.
01:58We're going to go into this little coffee shop right here.
02:05Venice is basically a beautiful maze
02:07of narrow alleyways like this one.
02:09bridges, waterways.
02:12It's really easy to get lost,
02:14and normally we would just run around and explore,
02:16but today we are on a very pointed mission
02:18to check out some of the tourist highlights.
02:20You just like go through these little alleyways
02:22on these windy streets,
02:24and before you know it,
02:25you end up where you're at.
02:29We just entered the Doge's Palace
02:31off of St. Mark's Square,
02:33and we're about to go look around.
02:34But I'm not going to lie,
02:36I can't stop thinking of the Doge
02:38that's on the Doge names.
02:40Every time they call this the Doge's Palace.
02:48So we're walking around Doge's Palace.
02:50What I've gathered is that this was the Doge's Palace,
02:53aka the Duke of Venice,
02:55and he lived here,
02:56but also there was like where all these massive rooms
03:00that are gold-plated,
03:01and a lot of very cool paintings,
03:03but it was where like the Senate met,
03:04and they also had a courthouse here.
03:06And then there was a bridge of size
03:08that connected this palace to,
03:11I guess, the jails or the chambers
03:13where people were held before they were sentenced to death.
03:16And fun fact,
03:18the reason why they called it the Bridge of Sighs
03:20is because it was the last look of Venice,
03:22I guess basically before you were executed.
03:25So, sigh.
03:27There is St. Mark's Basilica.
03:36We were supposed to be in there at about 9 a.m. I think,
03:39but for some reason,
03:41when I bought the tickets,
03:42we never actually got the actual ticket code.
03:44So, yeah.
03:47I don't think Lauren's too happy with me
03:48because I was supposed to have this figured out,
03:50but it, you know,
03:52I don't know.
03:53And we don't speak Italian very well,
03:54so they're confused that we don't have our tickets.
03:56So, supposedly the guy's going to call his boss,
03:59and hopefully we'll get it going today.
04:01If not, we might just have to spend another 12 euro to go in,
04:04but it'll be okay.
04:06We'll figure it out.
04:07We're going to listen to a quick podcast from Rick Steves
04:09about St. Mark's Square.
04:15This is the clock tower in St. Mark's Square.
04:17At the very top is the winged lion,
04:19which is the symbol of St. Mark and Phoenix.
04:22Right beneath it is the world's first digital clock.
04:25It changes every five minutes.
04:27And then below it is your more traditional clock
04:30that you see a lot all over Europe,
04:32which includes the astrological clock,
04:34the zodiac clock,
04:36and the actual, you know,
04:38hours like we used to see them now.
04:41Great news!
04:42Our tickets came through.
04:43We are ready to go see St. Mark's Basilica.
04:45Let's go!
04:46So one of the really cool things about St. Mark's Basilica
04:49or Basilica di San Marco
04:51is the fact that it's a really unique blend
04:54of Eastern and Western architectural styles,
04:56but it's all mosaic tiles.
04:58So the floors, the ceiling, all mosaic.
05:01Also, it has kind of those domes that are similar
05:03to what you see on Architecture of a Mosque.
05:05All right.
05:06The sun is finally coming out.
05:08Ear pods are coming out.
05:10We've had just about enough Rick Steves for the day.
05:12We did his whole tour of St. Mark's Basilica
05:16and St. Mark's Square or Plaza de San Marco.
05:19And now we're ready to enjoy this beautiful weather
05:21on a patio with some coffee
05:24and hopefully some snacks.
05:26Now we're going to get some cecchetti from the Oisteria.
05:39Happy man with his vegetables.
05:42We just strolled through the Aqua Alta bookstore.
05:44It's this really neat bookstore here in Venice
05:46where all of the books are inside of gondolas and on crates,
05:49so that way the books don't get ruined during a flood.
05:53And there's two really cool photo spots in there
05:55that you don't want to miss.
05:56First is this gondola right here
05:58where you can actually take a picture inside of it.
06:00You don't have to pay the, like, 100 euro for a gondola ride.
06:05The other one's right up on top.
06:06They have a staircase made of books
06:08that you can stand on top of to get a good view.
06:10Pretty sweet.
06:15We're sitting outside on a patio at a Cafe Del Doe.
06:19Time to get some caffeine so we can keep powering.
06:25An Americano cappuccino.
06:30I know that it's from Haan to drink cappuccinos after,
06:33I think it's like 11,
06:35but honestly I'm easing myself back into European coffee culture
06:39and I'm not ready to slug espresso shots just yet.
06:45Headed back to the hotel and I saw a supermarket.
06:47The hotel is right over there, but just kind of wanted some snacks.
06:51Whatever gets him to drink Aperol spritzes and eat pasta with me,
06:55I'm down for.
06:57Meanwhile, I'm going to take a nap.
07:07We got all cleaned up.
07:09We're about to go get some aperitivo.
07:12We're going to go find some chichetti, which is like a Venetian tapa,
07:17small plates that you can kind of order usually with a cocktail.
07:21So maybe a spritz or a glass of Prosecco,
07:23which is also from the Venice region.
07:25And it's a beautiful night here, so we're going to enjoy it before we,
07:28I don't know.
07:29Fun fact about the spritz,
07:31its name is obviously not Italian.
07:34And I recently learned some research that I did before the trip,
07:37that it's actually German.
07:38So it does come from the Northern Italy region
07:41where there was German Austrian occupation of Italy
07:44and they thought the wine was too strong.
07:46So they watered it down with a splash or a spritz.
07:50And that's how we eventually got the spritz.
07:56Cheers.
07:57All right, onto the next one.
08:07And we're going to get some food at this one.
08:09So yeah, we need some food.
08:11It's going to, we're really hungry.
08:13And we're really excited to try some more local cuisine.
08:17Chichetti.
08:22Garrett is now a fan.
08:24We're trying to find where to go eat dinner later,
08:26but it's Monday, so everything closes early.
08:28But I found, hear me out Lauren,
08:30I found a smoothie bar that's open until midnight.
08:35And they have yogurt bowls.
08:37So might work.
08:38No.
08:39So Garrett went in to get one spritz and one Prosecco
08:41and somehow left with two spritzes and a Prosecco.
08:43But it was all what?
08:46That two sandwiches was 12 euros.
08:51Pretty good deal.
08:52We have an arancini with broccoli and something else that I don't know what it is.
08:58It smells good.
08:59I'm excited.
09:08It's good.
09:09I might be beloved of this.
09:15One more stop.
09:17We forgot it's a Monday and everything's close.
09:19We're going to get some McDonald's.
09:21What does she eat?
09:23I'm ashamed.
09:27The final stop is the evening.
09:29It wasn't what we planned, but it's honestly packed in here, so.
09:33Popular spot.
09:34Yeah.
09:35Couldn't figure out what we wanted, so we just started walking around
09:38and next thing you know we ended up at McDonald's.
09:40We didn't even eat McDonald's at home.
09:42Yeah.
09:43This is probably the first chicken nugget I've had in a long time.
09:47I got my, uh, another banana.
09:48I don't know if my banana counts up to, but probably like six since we've been here.
10:04I just keep seeing all these fresh fruit stands, so you gotta eat your bananas.
10:24We got our touristy pics of the Rialto Bridge, but it's pretty crowded over here.
10:30A lot of tourists, so I think we're going to keep moving.
10:34We are spending the last part of the morning kind of walking around, uh, get some coffee
10:41and just enjoying the city one last time before we board a train and head to Florence.
10:46But I added to our list this place called Fulala.
10:49It's like a smoothie bar and they have a yogurt bowls and things like that.
10:53So we are about to grab a smoothie.
10:59An interesting thing here when you're walking through Venice, you'll see everyone has carts.
11:03Um, so you have to walk a lot of places here, obviously, to get food and produce and buy things.
11:07So everyone has these, uh, carts that they put all their food and things in.
11:13Um, and we actually saw this interesting thing.
11:16Some people have three-wheeled carts and when they pull them up the stairs, the wheels rotate
11:21so they can go up and down the stairs much easier, which is a pretty cool concept.
11:25Amazon Prime in Venice.
11:27Cannot be easy.
11:29It's Pigeon trying to race.
11:31He knows he's going to lose so he's off to the side now.
11:34Pulling ahead, Pigeon.
11:36He was keeping up for a while.
11:38You've got to get the workouts in when you can, so I decided to farmers carry Lauren's bag all the way from the hotel here.
12:00It's probably not that far.
12:02It probably took like, I don't know, seven minutes max.
12:05But, uh, it was kind of fun.
12:06People looked at me weird, but, uh, you gotta do what you gotta do.
12:09Spring and fall are the times in Europe when I'm sweating in a short-sleeved t-shirt and most of the people in Europe are still wearing parkas and scarves.
12:18And they're looking at me like I'm crazy.
12:20And I'm looking at them like they're crazy.
12:23But, the weather is absolutely beautiful.
12:26I don't know how these people are doing in all these layers, but it feels great.
12:29That one's up.
12:32It's so early there's not a platform yet.
12:42That's us!
12:43We got a red train.
12:45It's gonna go fast.
12:46We're a tour.
12:48I think we're taking more than our fair share of overhead bin space.
12:55I don't think all of these other passengers would.
12:58This is home for the next two hours.
13:00And then we'll be on farts.
13:03Oh, we're actually over here.
13:05Alright.
