00:00First purchase!
00:30This morning we woke up at 5 a.m. and took a flight from Amman to Istanbul.
00:35Royal Jordanians economy class is not as roomy as the business class.
00:40We were shocked at how much food they gave us just on a short two-hour flight.
00:43Feeling a little tired after staying up to midnight to rain in the new year,
00:46but we're so excited to start 2022 in a new country.
00:52We just checked into the Orient Bank Hotel right here behind me,
00:55and I have to say it was one of the warmest welcomes I've ever received.
00:59I was feeling pretty overwhelmed on the drive-in.
01:03It was like an hour drive, and when we got to the city there's just people everywhere.
01:06They're like walking alongside of the cars, and I tend to get really carsick.
01:09We walked in, we did the whole check-in process from the couch.
01:12They gave us Turkish coffee, walked us up to our room,
01:15and there was a whole slew of Turkish Delight and other sweets for us to have.
01:21But I needed some snacks.
01:23I don't know what they are.
01:25Turkish Delight.
01:27There are straws in here. I think it's because we're from Texas and they know we have hay bales.
01:31I don't think that's it.
01:32Tea leaves wrapped around some sort of gummy, like hibiscus tea leaves with gummy.
01:37I don't know. Let's see.
01:45It's almost like hibiscus tea leaves on a gummy bear.
01:47It's all different types of Turkish Delight.
01:50I don't know what Turkish Delight is.
01:52Apparently it's a gummy.
01:53Is it a gummy?
01:54So it was just a really great way to bring my energy back up to 100% and now I'm ready to explore the city.
01:59It's rainy here today in Istanbul, but we're not going to let that stop us from seeing and eating as much as possible in the next 36 hours.
02:05And our next stop is to get some roasted chestnuts, which is right there.
02:11Hello.
02:13Hello.
02:14Hello.
02:15Hello.
02:16Got 100 grams.
02:31Tastes like a warm chestnut.
02:35100 grams, which is about 8 of these.
02:38Pretty good size and it was 15 Turkish Lira.
02:43Turkish Lira.
02:44So overall a good deal.
02:45Yeah, these stands are everywhere.
02:46So it's kind of the first thing you see when you're driving through the city and had to make it the first stop.
02:53Next up we're getting some pomegranate juice.
03:00That's good.
03:01That's very good.
03:02Fresh pomegranate juice.
03:04For two of them it was 30 Turkish Lira.
03:06We freshly squeezed right in front of us.
03:12Oh.
03:13My.
03:14Goodness.
03:17Look at all.
03:18This.
03:20Food!
03:22The adana pavap.
03:23It's supposed to be the spicier.
03:26Essentially it's just a huge piece of grilled meat, some lentils, bread, skinned tomato, onions, cilantro, and a chili pepper.
03:35And I'm so excited to dig into this.
03:37Been looking forward to this since we plant this one.
03:43The spice kind of kicks in at the end.
03:46It's greasy for sure.
03:50It is so good.
03:52As soon as I heard sweet cheese and pistachio, I had to try this next dessert.
04:01We are at, I'm going to butcher this, pate asi kunefe, kunefe?
04:08And I'm going to get this dessert that I've been eyeing up for a long time.
04:15It's like a sweet fried cheese with pistachio.
04:20And I'm going to order it with ice cream.
04:25Get two teas.
04:26I think the whole thing will come out to be like 42 Turkish Lira.
04:30So it's like $3, which is insane.
04:33So we're going to enjoy this little coffee shop.
04:36I'm excited for the tea.
04:38So this is a half-eaten kunefe.
04:58Look at that.
04:59Ice cream is melting.
05:01Can't think of a better way to end our first night in Istanbul than on top of the Orient Bank Hotel.
05:19It's a brand new hotel.
05:21It was converted.
05:22It was the Deutsche Bank.
05:23Actually the same Deutsche Bank that was in the Skyfall James Bond movie.
05:28Um, reconverted into an autograph collection hotel.
05:31The staff here has been so, so nice.
05:34Um, the roof actually isn't open yet, but they've taken us up here like twice already.
05:38And I'm sure they'll take us up here again because it is the most incredible view.
05:44You can see the mosques behind me and there's the new mosque and the waterway.
05:51And it's just absolutely beautiful up here.
05:55Good morning.
05:56So this morning we're going to go see some tourist attractions.
05:59We're actually headed right now towards the Blue Mosque.
06:02And we're going to find a place to get some coffee and breakfast.
06:07We came all the way to Istanbul to get better coffee.
06:10Thanks a lot, Tim.
06:11I'm going to try the Turkish coffee.
06:13I just need to wake up first.
06:16So I got a traditional breakfast with cheese, reds, veggies, pita bread.
06:24Got a granola bowl.
06:25Sometimes.
06:26I just like the cheesecake.
06:27So we just had breakfast at the Poika coffee house.
06:29I'm probably butchering it, but that's the way my mind pronounces it.
06:33Um, you should check it out.
06:35It had some good Turkish options like their breakfast plates that had meats and cheeses.
06:39You know, some things if you're missing America like yogurt bowls and filtered coffee.
06:43But right now we're about to head to the Blue Mosque which is right behind us there.
06:48So as you can see it's raining here in Istanbul today.
07:07But we just left the Blue Mosque and it was, it was pretty incredible.
07:10So the mosque was constructed in 1619 by the Ottomans.
07:14Um, it has about over 20,000 blue ceramic tiles inside.
07:18That's kind of why it got the nickname the Blue Mosque.
07:20But unfortunately the entire thing is under construction.
07:23So literally you walk in and you can see the one big dome.
07:26But there's like eight smaller domes around it.
07:29And it's, it's all under construction so you can't see it unfortunately.
07:32The big fact about the Blue Mosque is it has six minarets.
07:35So as you can see behind me, um, the, the spires behind me.
07:39Typically mosques have about four minarets but this one has six.
07:43And our next stop is right across the way.
07:47Behind me is the Hagia Sophia.
07:49It's been a mosque.
07:50It's been a church.
07:51And now it's a museum.
07:52So we're going to go in there and learn, learn a little bit more.
07:55Well it's for 50 Turkish lira and I guess everybody's got the, uh, same idea that we had.
08:02We're inside the Hagia Sophia and it is so beautiful.
08:21We're walking past the new mosque on our way to the Grand Bazaar.
08:25It's the oldest or the first shopping mall in the world.
08:28It's supposed to be huge, chaotic, crazy.
08:30Really excited to do some shopping.
08:32Get all the free samples, buy some things, tea, spices, souvenirs, whatever it may be.
08:38But, ready to go shopping.
08:46So we don't know exactly why but the Grand Bazaar is closed today.
08:49It's reopening tomorrow but unfortunately we won't be here then.
08:52So, the good news is there's still plenty of places to shop.
08:55I don't think there's any shortage of people willing to sell you things here and there's
09:00everything you can imagine.
09:01I've seen dupes of every brand you could imagine.
09:04Spices, food.
09:05So, while we won't be in the largest covered market in the world, we're still going to
09:09get our shop on.
09:12So we're about to visit the Spice Bazaar here in Istanbul.
09:15It's the second most popular to the Grand Bazaar and it's also one of the largest in
09:19the city.
09:20So we're going to walk through.
09:21We'll probably end up buying some spices or tea, maybe a Turkish teapot if Lauren lets
09:26me buy it.
09:27But, we'll see.
09:28So, here we go.
09:29That's a good sign.
09:30Looks open.
09:32What is the difference between the Ottoman delight and like a Turkish delight?
09:47Turkish delight is a different one because this one is from Osmania time.
09:53That time they made it by Hannah.
09:56So, we went in there on a mission strictly to buy spices and I went off script.
10:09I know Garrett wasn't happy, but...
10:11It happens every time.
10:13I got this box of Ottoman delight, which is made with honey instead of sugar like it's
10:20more well-known Turkish delight.
10:22We got that for $8.
10:24And we also got...
10:26Let me pick this for you.
10:27No, it's okay.
10:29We got potato spices.
10:31We don't actually know what's in this, but it was really good.
10:36And then, on top of smelling all of the spices, we also got to taste all the spices and ended
10:41up buying these red chili pepper flakes.
10:44And everything that they give you there is vacuum sealed.
10:46So, you can travel with it and they stayed good for like up to two years.
10:50It looks like I will be having an extended vacation in Turkey.
11:18Yeehaw.
11:19Yeehaw.
11:20Yeehaw.
11:21Yeehaw.
