00:00Saturday will be very busy and when Shauna and I work together it's always busy. I have a family
00:15coming in at 1 o'clock. There's nobody else to do it so it's me. So this is where it's gonna be.
00:22She prefers to stay in the back and not deal with families because she gets so involved and
00:28it just rings her out. I just don't want to do this. Hey there, how do you do? I'm Shauna.
00:58I'm gonna have one question for you this morning. What? Would you leave your husband and run away with me?
01:13Do you know how many times we've had this discussion? I need to get some more coffee.
01:20Immediate coffee. I make strong coffee because I only drink one cup. More than one cup kind of gives me heartburn.
01:28I can't stand it when it's real strong because it tastes like dirty socks. Yeah, but what do dirty socks taste like?
01:34Dirty, like that coffee. Doesn't everybody like coffee in the morning? My body just normally gets up at 5 every morning and can't stop.
01:42Chuck always spills his coffee every morning. Hey, who invented this system?
01:47Shauna sucks hers down and grabs whoever else is standing there. Is there coffee in there?
01:51Yeah, and I just put spoiled cream in there. I lose mine. And there's John's coffee probably.
01:57I don't know if the schedule is busy or what today. We've got four, five, six desk certificates that need to be run.
02:02I have to get a gentleman ready in the chapel by 3 o'clock. And here I stand drinking coffee and smoking.
02:07Shauna? Shauna, I got the clothes for lining here. Yeah.
02:15I'm hanging up on the hook. All right. All right, thanks.
02:19Is there jewelry or anything? Yes, there's a photograph, there's a rosary bead, there's some jewelry.
02:23All right, thank you. All right, thanks.
02:25When David comes in, he doesn't like to look this way. And that's fine with me because I don't like to look his way.
02:33My eye always tries to stay away from looking at the bodies. That's just me. I don't want to see anything and I don't want to see.
02:38And I don't want to see people being worked on. David's probably never ever touched a dead human remains.
02:46I have no motivation for that. This to me, even though it's stressful, is less stressful than dealing with the family walking in.
02:55I got a family coming in in a few minutes to finalize arrangements.
03:00David, good. Nice to meet you. My pleasure.
03:02And then we're scheduled to have a memorial service for his mom here Saturday.
03:06You just don't know if you're going to have a family that's so grief-stricken that they're not really able to vocalize really what they want to have happen.
03:15You guys eventually will take to a cemetery or Aunt Thott or you're not sure?
03:17I'm not sure yet. We're not. This just happened and I'm really new at this.
03:22The way I look at it, I would much rather be in the back where I'm in control of the entire situation for the most part at all times.
03:30Whereas when you are with a family, you know, it can go anyway.
03:34For the last six years, she didn't really know us.
03:37We miss her, but it's not as if we were just all together all the time and everything was, you know, it was perfect.
03:48It wasn't, you know, because of the dementia.
03:50It's got to be here somewhere.
03:53Hmm.
03:54I had 500 bucks in cash that I was going to give this guy today.
03:58Hopefully, he'll let it slide until tomorrow.
04:01He was supposed to pick up his new car today.
04:03You know, it's nice. It's a four-door. It's not new, but it's new for me.
04:07And he forgot to bring the rest of the down payment.
04:09Oh, this morning I got up and I had some cereal, and that's what took so long.
04:13I think, oh, and I was watching something about the Spartans on History Channel, and I'm like...
04:18And then, you know, the kind of time escaped me. I thought, oh, man, I got to get out of here. And so I forgot.
04:24The problem is he can't remember where he put things.
04:28What did I forget? Oh, I forgot my money.
04:31Too many blows to the head, I think, from boxing. I don't know. But anyway...
04:36I just got to wait till tomorrow morning so I can get my car.
04:39Shawna and her sister, Melissa, working this Saturday. They'll be conducting the service.
04:45Very good.
04:46And anything else, let me know.
04:47David, I appreciated everything.
04:48You have to have a certain amount of detachment.
04:50I know that they are dealing with all kinds of emotions.
04:54My job really is not to pull those emotions out.
04:57Thank you very much, sir.
04:58Thank you, David. Take care.
04:59All right. Have a good day. Bye-bye.
05:00My job is to listen to what they're saying and make the funeral service as meaningful for them as possible.
05:08I lost my coffee.
05:11It might be in the garage, and if you find yours, can you find mine?
05:14I set it down and don't remember where I set it down at.
05:17Oh, man.
05:20My memory's about as shot as Chuck's. Oh, well.
05:25I think I just threw John's coffee in the trash because I'm such a clean freak.
05:31Oh.
05:33John, if I tell you something, will you not get mad at me?
05:36I very inadvertently placed your coffee in the top, top of a trash can.
05:46Can you imagine what's in a mortuary's trash can?
05:49HIV, AIDS, Ebola, I mean, you name it, it passes through here on practically a daily basis.
05:56No wonder I'm obsessive-compulsive.
06:01Shana's got a cleaning spree.
06:03I like this kind and that on the back.
06:05Yeah.
06:06So that's the kind we always get.
06:07I've always kind of been a clean freak type person.
06:11Shana with a Windex bottle?
06:13She's a madwoman.
06:15Never be too clean, you know what I mean?
06:24I will not drink it.
06:28Well, Rick, I met with Mr. Walker and I finished the arrangements for his mom.
06:32We're having a service Saturday here.
06:34It'll be a very nice ceremony.
06:36As long as he's happy and we've met his needs, that's all I care about.
06:39Yeah.
06:40No, he's happy.
06:41Saturday will be very busy.
06:44And when Shana and I work together, it's always busy.
06:48We have a service at 11.
06:51I have a family coming in at 1 o'clock.
06:54I don't see families on a daily basis and, you know, I prefer to have John and David, you know, do that because that's their area of expertise.
07:04Shana is very professional when she's in with families, but I also know she can be very, uh, she can get very emotionally attached to family too.
07:12Shana is extremely empathetic.
07:15She prefers to stay in the back and not deal with families because she gets so involved and it just rings her out.
07:21I just don't want to do this.
07:26It is Saturday.
07:27It's going to be a busy day.
07:29We have a service at 11.
07:31I have a family coming in at 1 o'clock.
07:34I'm glad Melissa's here today, though, to help.
07:36Uh, the funeral directors used to do this on their own.
07:39They never had a secretary on Saturdays.
07:41And ask me how, I do not know, but I couldn't even imagine.
07:44There's basically only two of us.
07:46There's going to be no lunch breaks, no anything.
07:50Never signed up to be Susie Homemaker.
07:53Day in, day out.
07:55Why does it look like a five-year-old was playing with paper in here on the floor?
07:59People are going to be showing up here in the next 15 minutes.
08:02Who was in here doing this on purpose?
08:04Um, it's Shana.
08:05Um, I was just calling to see when you'd be bringing Savannah out this way.
08:09My mom and dad have one of those love-hate relationships where they truly love each other, but they hate each other.
08:16That's why the relationship is a thousand times better than it was when they were married.
08:23I am going to kill your father.
08:25Why did you even agree to go anywhere with him, Mom?
08:28I am, like, so furious I want to kill him.
08:32What is he doing here?
08:33Just dropping Savannah off?
08:34I don't know.
08:35He's supposed to be looking, Mom.
08:36He's supposed to be looking at a car or whatever, but...
08:39Mom, she didn't want to come in.
08:41Oh.
08:42My dad feeds on driving my mom crazy, and it makes me personally very angry.
08:49My daughters and Chuck have a love-hate relationship.
08:53I wouldn't normally condone disrespect for your mother or your father, but, uh, sometimes
09:01he just can be so damn rude, and you have to put him in his place.
09:06Why did you get rid of the Mercedes, Dad?
09:08Because it did not run.
09:10Okay, but...
09:11I mean, it ran, but the energy...
09:12You could have spent $1,200 or $1,800 to repair it.
09:16It would have been a perfectly good...
09:18See, Dad, you do stuff, and you do not even consult anybody that has a good idea.
09:24Savannah, honey, are you mad at me?
09:26I'll give you a special present for being a good girl, okay?
09:29McDonald's?
09:30Um, yeah.
09:31If you can con your Aunt Missy into driving you down there,
09:33because, Savannah, I have work I have to do.
09:35Do you know where Aunt Missy is?
09:37Hello.
09:38Hi, Mr. Walker.
09:39Yes, ma'am.
09:40Nice to meet you.
09:41My pleasure.
09:42Are you Robert?
09:43Yes.
09:44Robert and Melissa.
09:45Hi, Melissa.
09:46It doesn't matter if there's one person or a hundred.
09:47Emotionally, I have to be there for them and greet them with a smile.
09:50I don't want to be too over-exuberant, but the fact is that I kind of have a problem that I do smile a lot,
09:56and I try not to smile in such a way where, you know, this is a party.
10:03Memorial services and funerals should be celebrations of life.
10:07I really do need to sit down and get prepared for my family that's coming in this afternoon.
10:14I prefer to strictly do nothing but handle the remains, but I have to work one weekend a month,
10:22and there's times that I need to see a family.
10:25This is a family that we actually served three years ago, and she wants to have her uncle prepared and embalmed
10:32and shipped to New York to be interred in the family plot there in New York.
10:36We gathered together today in loving memory of Florence Walker.
10:48I just, you know, always just want to take a look and see what's happening in here
10:52and make sure that things are, you know, in order for the most part.
10:57Like this looks very sloppy.
11:00I've been in situations in a room with a family that become very volatile.
11:05People have been angry. People are crying. That's the unexpected part, which to me is stressful.
11:12Florence was a homemaker, and that is a noble profession.
11:17There is a void in your lives, and yet at the same time there may be a feeling of relief.
11:24Relief that Florence's suffering is over, and she now has peace and contentment.
11:32Okay. I got a problem. I can't find my check before my car.
11:37I can't find my check.
11:39Chuck loses everything.
11:43I'm in big trouble.
11:45Now he's lost his paycheck, I guess.
11:47It might be in the van. Let me go check.
11:49Maybe I left at the bank.
11:51Where did I go after that? I can't remember.
11:53Why is everything always happening to me?
11:59I had it folded, you know, like a letter.
12:02Oh, I know. No, it's not there.
12:10This is crazy.
12:12How you doing, Pat? Good. How goes it?
12:15Chuck's buying a car from our insurance guy's son, who is a manager of a used car dealership over in Oceanside.
12:23You guys ready to roll?
12:24What do you got?
12:25I've got $500 for you, but I got to find my check because I lost it.
12:30I got to pay bills and everything else. I ain't got no cash except, you know, other than the five plus what I got in my pocket.
12:36But I have a long story. Let's go this.
12:40I just don't want to do this.
12:45So this is where it's going to be.
12:49Hi there. How are you doing?
12:50I'm doing fine. Nice to meet you.
12:52And you are Mrs. Yarbrough.
12:53Yes.
12:54Oh, how do you do? I'm Shauna Aaron.
12:56Yeah.
12:57Come on in.
12:58Now I'm going to ask, what was your uncle's full legal name?
13:03James.
13:04J-A-M-E-S.
13:05Yes.
13:06Bartholomew.
13:07Oh, how interesting.
13:08He was an air novel engineer.
13:09Oh, wow.
13:10Okay.
13:11Was your uncle ever in the military?
13:14No, he was not.
13:15Okay.
13:16He had my grandmother to take care of and two sisters.
13:19Oh, that's so neat then.
13:20So he's been a caretaker his whole life.
13:22And now you're taking care of him, so that's...
13:25No, I wish I could have done more, but I was here, you know.
13:28I know.
13:29That's just really...
13:30Was he cognizant that you were there?
13:32No, he wasn't.
13:33He hadn't been for about a day or so, but I'm convinced that he heard every word I said.
13:38I spent about three hours with him just talking about old times and the fact that he, you know, gave us all so much.
13:50Yeah.
13:51I just hanged him.
13:52Oh.
13:53That's so neat.
13:54But, you know, it just shows what a caring person he was and the kind of heart that you have.
14:00It's rare to come across every case she does.
14:05Every family she works with, it affects her.
14:08A lot of times she just doesn't show it because she has to put up this facade to keep going forward.
14:15We all do.
14:16Will you pardon me, please?
14:17I just got to get a, just a sip of water.
14:19And there's a drinking fountain over here too, girls, okay, if you want.
14:24Because I don't see families a lot, it's really stressful to me to meet with a family.
14:29And this was like the best family I could have ever hoped for in a million years.
14:33Savannah, there's some little girls up here.
14:35Do you want to say hi to them?
14:36Their mom and dad are here making arrangements with me.
14:39If you want, you can.
14:41You go tell them who you are.
14:43Come on in.
14:45Do you girls want to watch a video with Savannah?
14:49Just so you know, guys, nothing's in here.
14:50This is empty, okay?
14:52You did, okay.
14:53Yeah.
14:55Okay.
14:58I had my suit coat, which I can't find.
15:02I don't know if I left it.
15:05I hate to bug you again, but can we go back across the street and make another U-turn back
15:09to the office?
15:10I can't believe this.
15:12I didn't go very far, did I?
15:15Son of a bitch.
15:17This is the last one I watched, so maybe this is the one that's in.
15:25Son of a bitch.
15:26I had my check, and I also had another check from the gym.
15:29And I was going to catch them, but I must have misplaced them somewhere.
15:33And that's what I'm trying to find.
15:34So I can catch the damn things and give you that out of the five with it.
15:39You follow me?
15:40Well, I'm following you.
15:41It just wasn't part of the deal.
15:42I personally am going to embalm him when we're finished here.
15:48And I did look at him already, and he's a handsome man.
15:52He's totally handsome, and I can see the good looks around the family.
15:55So I'm going to take good care of him, okay?
15:57I want you to know that.
15:58All I do here is embalm and handle the remains because that's what I want to do,
16:02and that's what I'm good at.
16:04I'm not good at this thing here, dealing with people back and forth.
16:08That's very interesting.
16:09That's great, though.
16:10I feel good that I'm doing it.
16:11Yeah.
16:12You guys are playing Scrabble, or what's happening?
16:15I'm ready.
16:16Stop.
16:17So did you guys have fun?
16:18It was better hanging out in here than sitting in that room listening to me, right?
16:21Yeah.
16:22Well, nice meeting you.
16:23Thank you very much for all your help.
16:24It was nice to meet you.
16:25Nice to meet you.
16:26Catherine, thank you so much.
16:27You're just a beautiful, wonderful woman, and you are just a great mom.
16:33Thanks.
16:34And I'm going to take good care of him, okay?
16:37And that's what I'm going to do.
16:38I'm going to go back there right now.
16:40And that's going to be my goal, and he's going to be fine.
16:43He's going to be peaceful, and he is peaceful, and he's with God,
16:47and I'm going to finish my job and take good care of him, okay?
16:50You want to kiss for me?
16:51I like that.
16:52I will.
16:53Okay, you take care, okay?
16:54I will, thanks.
16:55Okay.
16:56You guys got a good mom.
16:59Don't forget it.
17:00What I thought was going to be a very stressful arrangement turned out to be one of the best in my life.
17:06You know, because you just don't come across people like that all the time, you know?
17:11Usually, everybody's out to get you, and I don't mean in a funeral home environment, but society has changed.
17:17Everybody's trying to stab everybody in the back.
17:19Everybody's trying to screw everybody over.
17:21And it's like, there's still, it makes me happy to realize there are still people in this world that truly are kind, hearted, and giving.
17:31Bottom line.
17:32You know what?
17:33This is not a scam, honest to God.
17:35I brought another victim.
17:36Chuck Weissmiller.
17:37You remember?
17:38Yeah, we met.
17:39He was scheduled to put $1,000 down.
17:40He's got $500 on him today, and $500 coming.
17:41Monday.
17:42I got to find my check.
17:43If not, I have to have Rick cut me another one, because I lost it.
17:45And that's not a scam either.
17:46That's for real.
17:47That's for real.
17:48Should I take him out in the alley or work him over a little bit?
17:49Yeah, really.
17:50Would you want this right now?
17:51Because there it is.
17:52Okay.
17:53One way or the other, I'll get it to you.
17:54Thanks.
17:55All right.
17:56Very good.
17:59Mike?
18:00Yes, I'm Mike.
18:01Thanks, Mike.
18:02Okay, thank you.
18:03Bye-bye.
18:04Have a great day.
18:05You too.
18:06Well, let's see if it starts first, huh?
18:07All right.
18:08Don't laugh, I had it happen before.
18:09All right, let's see what we've got going here.
18:12Four doors.
18:13It's clean, you know.
18:16Let's see how the wheel looks.
18:18I'm doing 75.
18:19What else do I want?
18:21Let's see how the cruise works.
18:23going here. Four doors. It's clean, you know. Let's see how the wheel looks. I'm doing 75.
18:33What else do I want? Let's see how the cruise works.
18:38Wunderbar. Hi girls. What's with these girls, man? They hide their face. If I was gonna go on a date,
18:49this car's fine. Unless she's looking for bucks, I mean. She sees my car. She's known. I just gotta
18:56know that, you know, I'm just Joe Potato. Yeah, that's nice to kind of snuggle up, you know.
19:05Come here, baby. Sit next to me. Let me show you how much I appreciate you. You sweet thing.
19:19I've invited my parents to come over and my sisters and have some drinks, have some wine.
19:28We'll eat a little bit and then relax and have some fun. My families, they get a little crazy
19:34sometimes. You never know what to predict. We could go at each other's throats. It's like the
19:41Italian version of Big Fat Greek Wedding. Shauna, my lovely wife, is a handful. There's a work,
19:48Shauna, who goes at 900 miles an hour. And there's a home, Shauna, that follows you around
19:53with a Windex bottle. I guess I just carry it a little bit to the extreme sometimes.
19:57Cleaning is her way of calming down. And once she calms down, it's just quite nice to be around.
20:04This is too messy for me. This is the cooking as you clean. I can't deal with that. No way.
20:10Where's your Windex? I put it away.
20:15Hi, Grandpa. He had a rundown. He got a new car.
20:19What kind of car is it? It's a Maserati.
20:23Hi. Good to see you.
20:24You too.
20:25Very low.
20:26Very low. Come on.
20:28I'm not going to argue with you. You've got a knife in here.
20:30Yeah, that's right. You know what happened last time.
20:32Yeah, I know.
20:33Sue, have a seat. Here's your plate right there.
20:35Where? Go sit.
20:36Right there. Say out. Missy, say out.
20:38If anything, this job has made me realize, if you have your family, you have it all.
20:45I'd be running out of here in a straitjacket if I could.
20:50I just think people need to be more grateful for what they have.
20:54Would you speak up, please?
20:55All you've done for our family.
20:57I have a family that loves me sometimes.
21:02For the first time in the history of my life, I ran out of Windex today.
21:06She told me if I could go over to Tara Moose's house and ask her a little, this much of a
21:13dance, she let me use my Toys R Us gift card.
21:17I bribed her.
21:18Shana, are you?
21:20Shana, that is very low.
21:22Jo, are you married to her?
21:23You guys act like I'm buying a crack here or something.
21:27I mean, I mean...
21:28It's so good.
21:30That's right.
21:31So good.
21:33Hello.
