02:42Ela diz
02:43Ela diz
02:44I see something on the ground.
02:46What is that?
02:58What she finds is Elisir Grimm,
03:01half naked and dead.
03:03And so it begins.
03:07I'm David A. Frankel.
03:09I'm a retired Washoe County Sheriff's Office detective
03:13in Reno, Nevada.
03:14When I got hired, after a couple years,
03:16I rotated into an undercover role
03:18where you follow the worst criminals around,
03:20and you really got to eye into how the criminals think,
03:23what they're doing.
03:25Criminals always throw curveballs,
03:26so you just got to keep an open mind
03:28and think out of the box.
03:43On that day, we got notified of a body
03:46out off of Interstate 80,
03:48and there's not much out there.
03:52I remember seeing, like, newspapers all over,
03:56and then the body was kind of in an area just off the road
04:02and seemed to be covered by a blanket.
04:06The briefing deputies tell Frankel
04:09that the victim is 51 years old.
04:11His name is Elisir Grimm,
04:13and he works at that particular gas station
04:16a very short distance away.
04:18The body was found at the I-80 Mustang exit.
04:23It's very familiar to people
04:24because the Mustang Ranch is at that exit.
04:29The Mustang Ranch is a brothel
04:32about 15 miles outside of Reno.
04:34It has been there for a long time.
04:37The Mustang Ranch, it's a popular place.
04:40You're wondering if it's related to that.
04:43Prostitution in the state of Nevada
04:45is not legal everywhere, just in select counties.
04:48Prostitution is not legal in Reno,
04:51but take a short drive and it is.
04:54The Mustang Ranch is just across the county line
04:57where prostitution is legal.
05:00So they draw from the population of Reno,
05:04which is filled with many tourists
05:06who come there to gamble.
05:08It mostly affected us by people
05:11who would visit there and head back into town
05:14either like DUIs or disputes
05:18that ended up spilling back into our county.
05:21The difficulty with prostitution
05:24and other nefarious dealings of humans
05:27is it's a gateway.
05:30It's a gateway to avoid the law.
05:34You are well aware prostitution is illegal,
05:36but all of a sudden you find yourself
05:38in a place where it's legal.
05:40What does that convince you of?
05:43The rules don't apply.
05:45All of a sudden, I am in a lawless area.
05:49And in my heart of hearts, I too am lawless.
05:54Prostitution encourages the arrival
05:57of an unsavory element in society.
06:00It waves a red flag.
06:03It says, come here and do as you wish.
06:06Come on down.
06:08You're the next contestant on the customer is always right.
06:12The deputy coroner and Frankel together respond to look at the body.
06:23His pants are pulled down and his shirt's pulled up.
06:28He appears to have some sort of injury.
06:35The deputy coroner does a closer examination of the head
06:38and he discovers three small caliber gunshot wounds.
06:44He determines small caliber by the size of the entry wound,
06:48which is very small.
06:50So this is a .22, .25 caliber pistol
06:54that inflicts these entries, which are fatal.
06:58Unless you have a trauma surgeon with the fastest hands in the world,
07:02you're not going to survive a small gunshot wound to the head.
07:05The head is a vacuum.
07:07When that bullet enters, it doesn't exit.
07:11It becomes a mixing bowl.
07:15It buzzes around inside your head
07:18and turns your brain into soup.
07:22The general position and the indication of the body
07:25is he was killed recently, overnight.
07:28Less than 12 hours.
07:30There's no evidence of a struggle, no defensive wounds.
07:33He has money in his wallet.
07:35So why is he undressed?
07:38Does the shooter want to humiliate him so when he's discovered he's naked?
07:43It could be anything.
07:44Mr. Graham's body was found 100 yards or so from a gas station that he also worked at.
07:53We did talk to people at the gas station.
07:56The employees say the last time they saw El Azir was last night when they closed and they all left for the evening.
08:02And there's certainly nothing out of the ordinary in this gas station this morning.
08:06There's no robbery.
08:07There's no robbery.
08:08They say he has a truck.
08:09So where is it?
08:10They don't know.
08:15It's always important to search the surrounding area from a crime scene to determine if other evidence can be discovered.
08:21And as those investigators plan out to search the area, Detective Franco goes to speak with the relatives of the victim.
08:34So I was at work and then they told me that my brother was murdered.
08:39I just didn't believe it was real.
08:44Because I had just talked to him.
08:46I just got my Mother's Day gift.
08:48You know?
08:49How is it possible?
08:50But that's it.
09:03It was right in this stretch where he was killed.
09:07And he was found here, up there.
09:12When I came there was still blood markings over there.
09:17By the stop sign.
09:23This is my brother, Ellie.
09:25You can't see it in this picture, but Ellie had a crooked smile.
09:29You know?
09:30It looked like a Popeye grin.
09:34When I was growing up there was 15 children.
09:38My dad was a pig farmer.
09:40And I think Dad and Ellie were like mud on a pig.
09:45They were inseparable.
09:48The two of them loved the hogs.
09:53He had multiple jobs.
09:55The gas station, the mission, the newspapers.
09:59He worked for the mattress company.
10:01I don't even know when he slept.
10:03But he kept it all up.
10:06He'd always help somebody.
10:08When somebody needed something, oh go to Ellie.
10:11He can help you.
10:12Who do you rely on when your reliable rock is no longer here?
10:17When they told me that Ellie was murdered, I thought Frank killed him.
10:33The sister believed that Mr. Graham's brother Frank may have killed her brother.
10:39They had an ongoing dispute that was pretty toxic.
10:44Detective Frankel goes to see relatives for the very purpose of trying to develop a suspect.
10:50And this family handed him a suspect on a silver platter.
10:55I.D.
11:11At 7.30 a.m., the victim Elisir Graham was discovered dead near the gas station where he worked.
11:18And now investigators are looking into his own brother as possibly the killer.
11:27When they were kids, Frank and Ellie were very close.
11:31They were like two peas in a pod.
11:33She said they will never talk about it.
11:35But something really bad happened between them.
11:38And neither one forgives the other.
11:41Tension between Frank and Ellie grew.
11:44For 20 years, they had the rivalry.
11:47In the prior few weeks, there had been an incident where Frank may have tried to run his brother over with a car.
11:56She said Elisir was visiting his parents at the family home.
12:00And the brother decided to come by as well.
12:03And when that happens, there's always going to be trouble.
12:07Frank allegedly announces he's going to kill his brother by running him over and attempts to do the same.
12:20When your blood runs hot, whatever is convenient becomes a weapon.
12:30I just remember Ellie just saying, you know, my leg's messed up.
12:35I'm like, are you okay?
12:37Yep.
12:38And then the police were called.
12:42But Elisir wouldn't pursue anything.
12:44So the sheriff's department drops the charge.
12:47Immediately you're thinking, we might have a really good lead.
12:51So you definitely have to go check that out.
12:54There's nothing more dangerous than a feud that goes on for 20 years.
13:00And then a recent event where it escalates.
13:03He gets more hateful by the minute.
13:11They find Frank, bring him into the office for interrogation.
13:15He is hostile.
13:16He is angry.
13:18He finds it to be ludicrous that they think he would kill his brother.
13:22And they say, well, why not?
13:24You tried to two weeks ago.
13:27Finally, he says, look, I just got into town.
13:31I've been driving a truck for weeks.
13:33He's an over-the-road trucker.
13:35They check with his employment, and that's true.
13:39We were able to verify that Mr. Graham's brother, Frank, was not involved in his murder.
13:45He's just a brother who doesn't like his dead brother.
13:49But that's all he is.
13:51So it's back to square one.
13:54You just have to reassess any other information you can get
13:58and keep tracking down people with connections to the victim.
14:04Now it's 9 o'clock in the morning,
14:07and Frankl hears back from the officers searching the crime scene area
14:11where they discover a pickup truck in a ditch along I-80.
14:15You certainly have to go look at it because it's in the vicinity of where the body's found
14:20and see if there's any connection.
14:22They search the truck, assuming it belongs to Mr. Graham,
14:26and they don't find anything of any interest.
14:29So they run the plates, and they discover it belongs to someone else entirely.
14:35It came back to people with the last name of Pape, and they lived in Fernley, Nevada, which was in the next county over.
14:43It's what we call a cow county, meaning it's a lot of farmland.
14:47It was a pretty peaceful little town.
14:50Robert Pape is 84 years old, and he lives with his wife Dorothy.
14:55And his truck is abandoned within a quarter mile of the murder scene.
15:00Now why is that?
15:02Did they see anything, or are they involved?
15:05You have to keep an open mind of it could be any of the above.
15:11He may be 84 years old, but all it takes is six pounds of pressure to pull the trigger.
15:19First thing we do is call the police department in that jurisdiction and ask them,
15:24hey, can you make contact with the papes and ask them if they know anything about their vehicle being out here at the Mustang exit.
15:32And the officer that answers the phone says, boy, that's amazing.
15:36We found his house on fire in Fernley this morning.
15:39That was pretty alarming. Like, what's going on?
15:45A 911 call came in at 5.30 this morning.
15:48When the fire department responded, they discover a pickup truck in the garage was on fire.
15:55The fire had also spread to the house.
15:58The firemen went in to clear the house, but found no one home.
16:02Robert and Dorothy Pape are not in this house.
16:05I felt that it wasn't this crazy coincidence.
16:09A light bulb went off. These might be linked together.
16:13What is going on here? Something is.
16:16So we responded out to Lyon County in the Fernley area, where the other crime scene was,
16:31to see if we could help with anything that they needed.
16:35My name is Marty Deuce.
16:37I was the detective for the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
16:40When the Washoe County Sheriff's Office calls us,
16:43we're now looking at possibly sitting on a piece of evidence for their case.
16:47Everybody was kind of getting extremely confused.
16:50The pieces of the puzzle were fitting together oddly.
16:53Things are going through your head.
16:55Like, was Mr. Graham involved in something at the papes' house?
16:59Did he steal their truck?
17:01We know that the fire department responded to a truck on fire in the garage.
17:08They assume it is a truck belonging to the resident, Mr. Robert Pape.
17:16However, at 7.30 in the morning, Robert Pape's truck is 20 miles away.
17:23So then the question becomes, if it's not the pape truck, then whose truck is it?
17:30When the police in Lyon County ran their records check, that truck came back to our victim, Mr. Graham.
17:41It's like, what the heck is going on here?
17:44This just gets more confusing by the moment.
17:47There must be some kind of connection.
17:50And also, where are the papes?
17:53Are they in the house? The fire department says no.
17:56The fire department goes in, puts on the fire, and they make a sweep of the house.
18:00So we were basically taking it at their word.
18:03And it was myself and the fire marshal who were talking.
18:05And we're both kind of like, are we sure we checked the house good?
18:09Fire departments are good at putting out fires.
18:14They're not very good at searching places.
18:16You train detectives to be thorough and detailed and overlook nothing.
18:22So we did a greater walkthrough of the house.
18:26With a structured fire, the entire house is covered in soot.
18:30It's understandable why people overlook things, because it's a mess.
18:36Filthy mess.
18:38When we did go into the master bedroom, the bed had been stripped.
18:43There was a weird substance on the floor, just like swiggles, on the carpet.
18:50It looked like shampooed.
18:52It was really weird. It kind of threw us off.
18:55When we got to the walk-in closet, something was just, they just call it JDLR.
19:01They just call it JDLR.
19:02It just doesn't look right.
19:08Most of their clothes were hung up,
19:10but then there's these two huge piles
19:11of clothing on the ground.
19:13Like somebody just emptied out a dresser
19:15and just threw it on the floor.
19:20Then we started just peeling back
19:21some of the clothes.
19:25And then all of a sudden,
19:26it was just like,
19:28I think we got a problem.
19:29You find what you've been looking for.
19:33Two dead people.
19:39Fatal Destination starts Tuesday,
19:42the 12th of August on ID.
19:50Detective Dave Frankel
19:52and Detective Duos
19:54of the Lyon County Sheriff's Department
19:55find two dead bodies.
19:57An elderly man
20:00and an elderly woman.
20:02They confirm the identity
20:04of these two people
20:04and they are in fact
20:06Robert and Dorothy Pape.
20:08We have three bodies.
20:10The Papes are dead.
20:12Mr. Graham is dead.
20:14What is going on?
20:15In Lyon County,
20:17we're all deputy coroners
20:18in the sheriff's office.
20:19So we were like,
20:20okay, we need to start
20:21switching over to coroner mode
20:23and crime scene mode.
20:26Mrs. Pape had been shot
20:28in the head
20:29and Mr. Pape
20:31had been shot
20:32in the head and torso.
20:34Small caliber bullets,
20:36just like LSU or Graham.
20:38Now we know
20:39this is connected
20:40and the same shooter
20:42is involved
20:42in all of this mess.
20:44There is some evidence
20:45of decomposition
20:46which says
20:47this didn't happen
20:48this morning,
20:49this happened
20:49a few days ago.
20:51And so they are first.
20:53Mr. Graham
20:53is victim number two.
20:56What is the purpose
20:57behind that?
21:00Detectives continue
21:01their search
21:01and they find
21:02two locations,
21:04the obvious spots
21:05where these people
21:06were killed.
21:07More than likely,
21:08Dorothy's laying in bed
21:09and Robert Pape's
21:12laying flat on his back
21:13on the floor.
21:17So somebody moved
21:18those bodies
21:18post-mortem.
21:21Now why do they do that?
21:23The Pape's house
21:24appeared to be like
21:25a ransacked residence.
21:29Jewelry seemed
21:30to be gone.
21:31Other things
21:32that would lead them
21:33to believe this might
21:34have been a burglary
21:34gone bad.
21:36To have this kind
21:37of violence
21:38associated with theft
21:39and burglary
21:40is very rare.
21:42We did a greater
21:44walkthrough of the house.
21:45Now I start seeing
21:46indications that
21:47are throwing me off.
21:51There's a full
21:52cookie sheet of
21:53freshly cooked bacon.
21:55It's just sitting
21:56on the counter.
21:58They find
21:59half-eaten food.
22:01You have a guy
22:02who kills
22:03and then decides
22:05to live there
22:05with his victims
22:07because they're
22:09decomposing
22:10two or three days' worth.
22:12He's eating a pizza
22:13with dead people.
22:15Extremely creepy.
22:17Extremely.
22:18and while they're
22:21working this scene
22:22the relatives
22:23of Dorothy
22:24and Robert
22:25Pave arrived
22:26and they've
22:29informed him
22:29of their death.
22:31I go screaming
22:32up the driveway
22:33in my car
22:35and I jump out
22:36and this guy
22:37in a suit
22:38comes running
22:38up to me.
22:39I asked him
22:40you're a fire detective
22:41or something
22:42and he goes
22:43no
22:44I'm a homicide
22:45detective.
22:46He puts his hands
22:47on my shoulder
22:47like this
22:49and he's holding
22:50me
22:50and he goes
22:52we believe
22:53that they've
22:54been murdered
22:54and I'm like
22:56what?
22:58What do you mean
22:58they've been
22:59murdered?
23:02They asked
23:04who they might
23:04have known
23:05that would have
23:05done this.
23:07They'd said
23:08a lot of people
23:08know the papes
23:09and nobody
23:10had a bad
23:11word to say
23:11about them.
23:12Murder never
23:13ever crossed
23:14my mind
23:14because everybody
23:15in that town
23:16loved him.
23:18This is Bob
23:19and Dottie's
23:1950th wedding
23:20anniversary.
23:22They celebrated
23:23just the two
23:25of them
23:25because in their
23:26minds that's
23:27all there was.
23:29You never saw
23:30one without
23:30the other.
23:32Bob and Dottie
23:33were married
23:3363 years.
23:37Bob was
23:39in the U.S.
23:40Army
23:40and he was
23:41in Korea
23:42for two years
23:43and he had
23:44a purple heart
23:45and then
23:47Bob's career
23:48was in the
23:50drywall
23:51tapers union.
23:54Dottie was
23:55a stay-at-home
23:56mom.
23:57She had like
23:57five miscarriages
23:59trying to have
24:00children and
24:01so Bob
24:01and Dottie
24:02pretty much
24:04gave up
24:05on never
24:05having any
24:06children
24:06and then
24:07she got
24:08pregnant
24:08with my
24:08husband.
24:10We were
24:10the four
24:11of us
24:11a very
24:12close
24:13family.
24:16With the
24:17papes being
24:18deceased
24:18in Wyand
24:19County
24:19and Mr.
24:20Graham being
24:21deceased
24:21in our
24:22county
24:22and the
24:23coincidences
24:24of their
24:25vehicles being
24:26at opposite
24:27scenes
24:27obviously
24:29we're thinking
24:29there's some
24:30kind of
24:30connection.
24:30they asked
24:34did your
24:34mother or
24:35your father
24:35know a
24:36man named
24:36Elisir
24:37Graham who
24:38worked in
24:38a gas
24:38station 20
24:39miles away
24:40on I-80.
24:41And I
24:41went absolutely
24:42not.
24:44So it
24:44certainly gives
24:45one the
24:45impression so
24:46far that
24:47these victims
24:48were connected
24:49at random.
24:51It puts a
24:51lot of pressure
24:52on you because
24:52obviously your
24:53body count's
24:54going up quickly.
24:55Is somebody
24:56going on a
24:56killing spree?
24:57Do we have
24:58a serial
24:58murderer?
24:59Are we
24:59going to
25:00find more
25:00bodies?
25:01Your
25:02assumption
25:02is great
25:03that this
25:04person isn't
25:05through killing.
25:06He likes
25:06it and
25:07wherever he
25:08happens to
25:08be is
25:09where he
25:09might strike
25:10again.
25:11And we
25:12don't know
25:12where that
25:13is.
25:14Now it's
25:1411 a.m.
25:16Both
25:16agencies have
25:17been placed
25:18on high
25:18alert.
25:19The
25:19Lyon County
25:20Sheriff's
25:20Department
25:20gets a
25:21phone call
25:22to check
25:22the welfare
25:23on Angie
25:24Duff.
25:24This is
25:25a neighbor
25:25of the
25:26papers.
25:26Detective
25:29Dews can
25:30see that
25:30house from
25:31where he's
25:31standing.
25:33They said
25:34the female
25:34that owned
25:35the house
25:35would volunteer
25:36at the
25:37senior center
25:37and she
25:37was a
25:38no call
25:38no show
25:38that morning.
25:40We sent
25:41two street
25:42deputies.
25:48Well they
25:48get there
25:49and there's
25:49no answer.
25:54One of them
25:54went around
25:55back.
25:56and the
26:05back
26:06glass
26:06had been
26:07shattered
26:07and there's
26:08glass
26:08everywhere.
26:16He's looking
26:17through that
26:18window
26:18and sees
26:20the absolute
26:21worst thing
26:21he could see.
26:22the fear
26:26was he
26:26would strike
26:27again
26:27and he
26:31has
26:31they discover
26:35two more
26:35dead bodies
26:36a man
26:39and a woman.
26:40All of a sudden
26:41that's five
26:42our body
26:43counts going
26:43up.
26:44There's no
26:44longer any
26:45doubt.
26:45This is one
26:46person.
26:46They're on a
26:47killing spree.
26:48Anyone they
26:48encounter
26:49they're going
26:49to kill.
26:51That's when
26:51the pressure
26:52ratchets up
26:52pretty high.
26:56Spree killers
26:57are rare.
26:59They don't
27:00happen as
27:00often as
27:01serial killers
27:01do.
27:02They are
27:03someone whose
27:04rubber band
27:05breaks.
27:06A serial killer
27:07has an appetite
27:08for killing.
27:09but each
27:11time he
27:11kills
27:11it satisfies
27:12that desire
27:13for a
27:15period of
27:15time.
27:17A spree
27:18killer
27:18is in the
27:19act of
27:20doing it
27:20all the
27:21time.
27:22They don't
27:23want to
27:23stop and
27:24reconsider.
27:26They don't
27:26want to
27:27calm down.
27:28They want
27:29to continue
27:30to feed.
27:33There are
27:34people among
27:35us who are
27:35great white
27:36sharks.
27:36the perfect
27:38eating machine
27:39to kill
27:41is not
27:41enough to
27:42do it
27:42only once.
27:44Kill a
27:45series,
27:46go back
27:46and eat
27:47the remains
27:47and kill
27:49again.
27:50That's what
27:50no one wants
27:51to think
27:51about
27:51because
27:53spree killers
27:54have no
27:55idea what
27:55your name
27:56is.
27:58They just
27:58want to
27:58kill you
27:59because you're
28:01a human
28:01and you're
28:02standing in
28:02their way.
28:03when they
28:07gain entry
28:07to the
28:08home of
28:08Angie Duff,
28:10they examine
28:11the house.
28:13It's a
28:13chaotic crime
28:14scene.
28:14Actually,
28:14it was more
28:15like a
28:15combat zone.
28:17She was
28:17fighting for
28:18her life.
28:19There's blood
28:20everywhere.
28:21It's all
28:21over the
28:21carpets.
28:22It's on
28:22the floors.
28:23It's on
28:23the walls.
28:24I can
28:25honestly say
28:25it's the
28:26most bloody
28:27non-suicide
28:29I've ever
28:30seen.
28:30The victims
28:33are identified
28:34as Angie
28:34Duff
28:35and her
28:37companion
28:37Lester
28:38Lieber.
28:39Both have
28:40been shot
28:40to death
28:41with small
28:41caliber bullets.
28:43Lester
28:43also had
28:44a very
28:45evident
28:46knife cut
28:46into his
28:47chest.
28:49Now we
28:49have two
28:49weapons
28:50involved
28:50perpetrated
28:51by the
28:51same
28:51person.
28:52Maybe
28:53we're
28:53now
28:53really
28:54enjoying
28:54the
28:55violence?
28:55Hard
28:55to say.
28:57But it's
28:57an
28:58escalation.
28:59So
29:00now what's
29:00the motive?
29:01Nothing
29:01is taken.
29:02Nothing
29:02is rattled
29:03through.
29:03The cars
29:03are still
29:04here.
29:05And I
29:05have had
29:05a serious
29:06fight in
29:07this house
29:07with firearms
29:09and a
29:10bladed
29:11weapon.
29:11It's like
29:12it's calculated
29:12but it's
29:13random
29:13at the
29:14same time.
29:16So
29:16they're
29:16looking at
29:17these bodies
29:18and then
29:19they realize
29:20the blood
29:21is very
29:22fresh.
29:23This
29:23just
29:24happened.
29:26If
29:27they got
29:27far
29:28they're
29:28on foot
29:28right in
29:30the
29:30general
29:30area.
29:33Where
29:34is this
29:34son of
29:35a bitch?
29:36He's
29:36here
29:36somewhere.
29:40So
29:40now we
29:41have to
29:41lock
29:41down
29:41that
29:42neighborhood
29:42and
29:42keep
29:43track
29:43of
29:43who's
29:43going
29:44in
29:44and
29:44out
29:44because
29:45the
29:45killer
29:45might
29:46be
29:46right
29:47next
29:47to
29:47us
29:47and
29:47us
29:48not
29:48even
29:48know
29:48we
29:56brought
29:57in
29:57the
29:57SWAT
29:57team
29:57and
29:59then
29:59they
29:59searched
29:59as far
30:01as they
30:01could
30:01in every
30:02direction.
30:03We have
30:04other deputies
30:04doing house
30:05to house
30:05knocking
30:06on doors.
30:08It's
30:08quite a
30:09chaotic
30:09scene
30:10in a way
30:11of
30:11a lot
30:11of
30:11moving
30:12parts.
30:15This
30:15is
30:16absolutely
30:16every
30:16officer
30:17with a
30:17badge
30:18and a
30:18gun
30:18that
30:18they
30:18can
30:19get
30:19their
30:19hands
30:19on.
30:20We
30:20already
30:21have
30:21five
30:21people
30:21killed.
30:22We
30:22could
30:22have
30:2320
30:23dead
30:24before
30:24this
30:24is
30:24over.
30:25We're
30:25going to
30:25make
30:26it
30:26stop.
30:27And
30:27the
30:28way
30:28to
30:28make
30:28it
30:28stop
30:28is
30:29to
30:29find
30:29it.
30:30In
30:30a
30:30small
30:31town,
30:31word
30:31gets
30:32around
30:32very
30:32quickly.
30:33So
30:33there
30:33was
30:33a
30:34lot
30:34of
30:34news
30:34media
30:34around.
30:35The
30:35people
30:36of
30:36Fernley
30:36are
30:37terrified.
30:37You
30:38know
30:38your
30:39neighborhoods
30:39better
30:40than
30:40we
30:40do.
30:41Be our
30:42eyes
30:42and
30:42ears.
30:43Call
30:43us.
30:44Nobody
30:45knows
30:45what's
30:45going
30:46on.
30:46People
30:47were
30:47wondering,
30:47is he
30:48going
30:48from
30:49house
30:49to
30:49house?
30:49Why
30:49is
30:50he
30:50doing
30:50this?
30:50Who
30:51is
30:51he
30:51targeting?
30:52A
30:52lion
30:53that
30:53is
30:53on
30:54the
30:54hunt
30:54and
30:56they
30:56are
30:56the
30:56prey.
30:58That's
30:58pressure.
31:02An
31:02hour
31:02passes.
31:03It
31:04is
31:04the
31:04longest
31:04hour
31:05in
31:05history
31:06for
31:06that
31:06neighborhood.
31:07The
31:07urgency
31:08is
31:08incredible.
31:09They
31:09feel
31:10it
31:10in
31:10their
31:10chest.
31:12Their
31:12hearts
31:12in
31:12hammer
31:13mode
31:13at
31:13the
31:13moment.
31:14And
31:15all
31:15of
31:15a
31:15sudden
31:15received
31:16another
31:16call
31:17of a
31:17possible
31:18burglary.
31:19They
31:19rush
31:20over
31:20a few
31:20houses
31:21down
31:21and
31:21they
31:22talk
31:22to
31:22the
31:22home
31:22owner.
31:23He
31:23said,
31:23I
31:23hear
31:23somebody
31:24crawling
31:25around
31:25in
31:25a
31:26crawl
31:26space
31:26under
31:27my
31:27house.
31:30He
31:30is
31:31probably
31:31able
31:32to
31:32see
31:32them
31:33from
31:33under
31:34that
31:34house
31:34and
31:35he
31:35has
31:36a
31:36gun.
31:36That's
31:37a
31:37very
31:37awkward
31:38feeling.
31:39You
31:39begin
31:39to
31:39feel
31:40very
31:40naked,
31:40very
31:41naked
31:42indeed.
31:48The SWAT team
31:49was called
31:49so they
31:49could do
31:50the search.
31:50so SWAT
32:03dives
32:04under
32:04that
32:04house
32:04and
32:07they
32:08find
32:08nothing.
32:11But
32:12they
32:12did
32:12locate
32:13a
32:13phone
32:14and
32:15a
32:15large
32:15amount
32:16of
32:16cash.
32:17maybe
32:19he
32:19was
32:19here
32:19but
32:20he's
32:20not
32:20here
32:20now.
32:22So
32:22where
32:22did
32:22he
32:23go?
32:26When
32:27you
32:27know
32:27that
32:28your
32:28shooter
32:28is
32:29nearby,
32:30your
32:31head
32:31is
32:31on
32:31a
32:31swivel,
32:32your
32:33gun
32:33is
32:33in
32:33your
32:33hand,
32:35the
32:35safety
32:35is
32:36off,
32:36you're
32:37prepared
32:37to
32:37defend
32:38yourself
32:38and
32:39you
32:39better
32:40be
32:40because
32:41he's
32:42prepared
32:42to
32:42kill
32:43you.
32:47So
32:57they're
32:57looking
32:57around
32:58and
32:59all of
32:59a sudden
32:59they hear
32:59somebody
33:00yell,
33:01there
33:01he is.
33:03And
33:03all of
33:03a sudden
33:04he comes
33:04like
33:04through
33:06the
33:06garage
33:06and
33:08he's
33:09got a
33:10pair of
33:10jean
33:10shorts
33:10and he's
33:11covered
33:11in blood.
33:12The
33:12SWAT
33:12team
33:13comes
33:13around
33:13the
33:13corner
33:13sees
33:14him
33:14and
33:15then
33:15just
33:15swarmed
33:16in
33:17on
33:17him
33:17puts
33:19him
33:19at
33:19gun
33:19point
33:20orders
33:20him
33:20onto
33:20the
33:21ground
33:21and
33:23got
33:23him
33:23in
33:23cuffs.
33:25You assume
33:26he has
33:26a gun
33:26on his
33:27person.
33:32But
33:32they search
33:33him
33:33and there
33:33is
33:33no
33:34gun.
33:38He's
33:38holding
33:38both
33:39key fobs
33:39for both
33:40the
33:40cars
33:40at
33:40Angie
33:41Duff's
33:41house.
33:43He
33:43identifies
33:44himself
33:44as
33:45Jeremiah
33:45Bean.
33:46OK
33:49Jeremiah
33:49it's
33:50time
33:50to
33:50talk
33:51to
33:51this
33:51boy
33:51and
33:53find
33:53out
33:53what
33:53his
33:54maladjustment
33:55is.
34:09It's
34:09euphoric
34:10when you
34:10finally
34:11find the
34:11animal
34:12and you
34:13lock him
34:13up.
34:14and he
34:15suddenly
34:16doesn't
34:16look like
34:17he's
34:1712 feet
34:17tall.
34:18He
34:18just
34:19looks
34:19like
34:19what
34:19he
34:19is.
34:20An
34:21idiot.
34:26Once
34:26you get
34:27this
34:27person
34:27in
34:27custody
34:27it's
34:28almost
34:28a
34:28relief
34:28and
34:29now
34:29it's
34:30piecing
34:30together
34:31how
34:32this
34:32all
34:32happened.
34:37You have
34:37the right
34:38to remain
34:38silent.
34:39Anything
34:39you say
34:39can be
34:40used
34:40against
34:40you
34:40in
34:41court.
34:41Do you
34:42understand?
34:42Mm-hmm.
34:43And are you
34:43willing to answer
34:44some questions
34:45at this time?
34:45Yeah.
34:47He says he wants
34:47to talk.
34:49Like I want
34:49to tell my
34:50story.
34:51All right.
34:52What do you need
34:52to tell us?
34:54I don't want to say
34:54that I'm crazy
34:55but I just want
34:57to be a
34:58criminal
34:59saying
35:00I'm just
35:01you know
35:02just hearing
35:02stuff
35:03the voice
35:04will tell
35:04you to do
35:05this
35:05and do
35:05that.
35:08Mr. Bean
35:09decides he's
35:11going to do
35:11an absolutely
35:12pathetic
35:13third grade
35:14level
35:14impersonation
35:15of a
35:16schizophrenic.
35:17He's acting
35:17as if he's
35:18speaking to
35:19voices coming
35:19out of his
35:20own head.
35:22What he's
35:22getting is an
35:23F from his
35:23acting instructor
35:24because it's
35:25just pathetic.
35:27So what kind
35:28of things
35:29were these
35:29voices saying?
35:32They're just
35:32saying to
35:33kill somebody.
35:37To kill
35:37somebody?
35:37Okay.
35:39They see
35:40through his
35:40smoke screen
35:41in a microsecond.
35:43Hey Jeremiah?
35:44Yeah?
35:44Take your
35:45time on
35:45this,
35:46okay?
35:47And eventually
35:47Jeremiah realizes
35:49that his
35:49shtick isn't
35:50working and
35:51he starts
35:51to break
35:52down.
35:53You know
35:54I just
35:54got tired
35:57laughing.
35:57I just
35:57ended up
35:58doing some
36:00foul stuff.
36:02He just
36:02literally
36:03painted the
36:04story from
36:04the first
36:05time that
36:05he sought
36:06the papes
36:07and decided
36:08that he was
36:09going to
36:09rob them
36:09to the
36:10point where
36:10he was
36:10in the
36:11holy
36:11cell.
36:14He
36:16says he
36:17was staying
36:17with a
36:17friend in
36:18the area
36:19of the
36:19papes'
36:19home.
36:20He's a
36:20heroin addict.
36:21He's
36:21desperate
36:21for money.
36:23He had
36:24been watching
36:24the papes
36:25and kind
36:25of looked
36:26at them
36:26as an
36:27easy target.
36:28That's
36:28why he
36:28chose
36:29to victimize
36:30them.
36:32The garage
36:33door was
36:33open and
36:33then I
36:34walked in
36:34and then
36:36I just
36:39went into
36:39the bedroom
36:40and then
36:45I shot
36:46the lady
36:46first in
36:47the back
36:47of the
36:47head.
36:48I think
36:49she was
36:49sleeping.
36:53Her
36:53husband rushed
36:54to her
36:54aid and
36:55suffered
36:56the same
36:56fate.
36:58He came
36:58back into
36:58the bedroom
36:59and then
36:59I shot
37:00the old
37:00man
37:00in the
37:03front of
37:03the
37:04head.
37:05Then he
37:05ransacked
37:06their home,
37:07took their
37:07property of
37:08value,
37:09and stayed
37:10there for
37:11a day or
37:11two.
37:12Then what
37:13happened?
37:15I took
37:16the truck
37:16and then
37:17I took
37:17off.
37:22He went
37:22to Reno
37:23and pawned
37:23some things,
37:24got some
37:24money,
37:25went to a
37:26strip club.
37:26He was
37:27using the
37:27papes as
37:28his own
37:28personal
37:29ATM.
37:31And then
37:32he came
37:32back to
37:32Fernley,
37:33right back
37:33to the
37:34papes'
37:34house.
37:34They were
37:35smelling
37:35pretty bad,
37:36so I just
37:37kind of
37:37covered
37:37them with
37:38clothes or
37:39whatever.
37:39Okay.
37:40Were they
37:41in the
37:41same
37:41spots or
37:42why?
37:44They
37:44were in
37:45the
37:45closet.
37:46How did
37:47they get
37:47there?
37:48I put
37:48them there.
37:50He said
37:51that he
37:51then took
37:52bottles of
37:52shampoo and
37:54squeezed them
37:55onto the
37:55carpet,
37:55hoping that
37:56that would
37:56mask the
37:57scent.
37:57and then
37:58Sunday
37:59came around
38:00and I was
38:00just like,
38:00I'm going to
38:01take the
38:01truck again
38:02and,
38:02you know,
38:03I'm going to
38:03just try to
38:04have some
38:04fire or
38:05whatever.
38:06I left
38:07out to
38:07go to
38:08Reno.
38:09He drives
38:10it onto
38:10I-80 and
38:11heads west.
38:12Okay,
38:13so what
38:14happened?
38:15So I was
38:15trying to make
38:16a U-turn off
38:16for the
38:17freeway,
38:18having little
38:18sparks.
38:21The truck
38:21got stuck
38:22in the
38:22ditch.
38:22He's
38:24within a
38:24quarter
38:25mile
38:25of the
38:25gas
38:25station
38:26where
38:26Graham
38:26works.
38:28Graham
38:28sees him
38:29off the
38:30road in
38:30this
38:30truck.
38:32Okay,
38:32so how
38:33did you
38:33get him
38:33to stop?
38:34I just
38:35waved.
38:35I was like,
38:36hey,
38:36excuse me.
38:37I just
38:39went blank.
38:41Then I
38:41shot him.
38:50Was he
38:50still inside
38:51the car?
38:51Was he
38:51outside?
38:52He
38:54was
38:54still
38:54inside
38:54the car
38:55and I
38:55tried
38:55to
38:55scoot
38:56him
38:56over
38:56or
38:56whatever
38:56but
38:57then
38:57he
38:57kind
38:58of
38:58like
38:58just
38:58fell
38:58out.
39:00He grabbed
39:00his pants
39:01to try to
39:01move and
39:02they came
39:02down.
39:04He grabbed
39:04his shirt
39:04to drag
39:05him and
39:06all it did
39:06was pull
39:07up.
39:07That's
39:08why he's
39:08almost
39:08naked.
39:09So now
39:10he jumps
39:10in Graham's
39:11truck.
39:12But instead
39:13of getting
39:13back on
39:14I-80
39:14heading
39:15westbound,
39:15for some
39:16reason,
39:16he went
39:17back to
39:17Fernley,
39:18right back
39:18to the
39:18papes'
39:19house.
39:22Then he
39:22realizes
39:23he's
39:23got
39:23another
39:23thing
39:24he has
39:24to
39:24cover
39:24up.
39:25And then
39:26I just
39:26I set
39:27the truck
39:28on fire.
39:29I poured
39:30a gas
39:30can all
39:31over
39:31the truck.
39:34The matches
39:34were actually
39:35in the guy's
39:36truck.
39:37And then
39:38I ran.
39:38He said
39:39he was
39:39going to
39:40hide all
39:40his crimes
39:41by starting
39:42a fire
39:43and then
39:44hopefully
39:45escape and
39:45disappear,
39:46which didn't
39:47go exactly
39:47as he
39:48planned.
39:48I was
39:49just like
39:50I don't
39:50know what
39:50to do
39:51because I
39:51went a
39:52couple
39:52of houses
39:52up and
39:54I just
39:54opened the
39:54door and
39:55I'm waiting
39:55to the
39:56house.
39:57The home
39:57of Angie
39:58Duff.
40:00He said
40:01he wasn't
40:01there to
40:01rob the
40:02house.
40:04He was
40:05there to
40:05simply
40:06garner a
40:07vehicle.
40:08And then
40:08what happened?
40:09The lady
40:09came out
40:10of the
40:10bedroom and
40:11she was
40:11just like
40:11where are
40:12you?
40:13And then
40:13that's
40:14when I
40:14shot.
40:15And
40:16I missed.
40:17Angie
40:17goes in
40:17to fight
40:18her
40:18flight.
40:19But she
40:19picks fight
40:20and so
40:20she begins
40:21to tussle
40:23with him
40:23a little
40:23bit.
40:24And he
40:25says that
40:25there's a
40:25struggle
40:25over the
40:26gun.
40:26And he
40:28gets her
40:28pushed
40:29back and
40:30she kind
40:30of slumps
40:31and then
40:31he drops
40:33the gun
40:33and he
40:33shoots her.
40:38Lester,
40:39who is
40:39in the
40:40backyard
40:40watching
40:40the
40:40papes
40:41house
40:41burn,
40:41comes
40:42back
40:42in
40:42the
40:42house.
40:43And
40:44Bean
40:44said
40:45that basically
40:46he caught
40:47him off
40:47guard,
40:47firing at
40:49him,
40:49hitting him
40:50and missing
40:50him,
40:51blowing up
40:52the sliding
40:52glass door.
40:53They get into
40:54a small
40:54scuffle but
40:55it wasn't
40:55much.
40:56He said
40:56Lester went
40:57down pretty
40:58fast.
40:59And then he
41:00grabbed a
41:00knife and
41:01started stabbing
41:01him.
41:02Now he
41:03is covered
41:04in blood.
41:05Then what
41:05happens?
41:08I started
41:08to get
41:09undressed
41:09or whatever
41:10going.
41:12And then
41:13I just
41:13laughed
41:13so high.
41:15And here
41:15come the
41:16police.
41:17Oh no,
41:18now he's
41:18trapped.
41:19Thank you
41:20for telling
41:20me these
41:21things.
41:21It can't
41:22be easy.
41:23You could
41:23see when
41:24he was
41:24done
41:25talking.
41:26His
41:26whole
41:26body
41:26just
41:26relaxed.
41:28He
41:28got it
41:28all
41:28off
41:28his
41:29chest.
41:30After
41:30the
41:30confession
41:31is
41:31complete,
41:32they
41:32recovered
41:32a 22
41:33caliber
41:34pistol,
41:35the
41:35ultimate
41:36corroborating
41:36evidence.
41:37he
41:38is
41:38toast,
41:39as we
41:40say in
41:40the
41:40murder
41:41fist.
41:44The
41:45person of
41:45interest or
41:46suspect in
41:47five murder
41:47cases made
41:48his first
41:48court appearance
41:49just minutes
41:50ago.
41:51So we're
41:52all waiting
41:52in the
41:53courtroom.
41:54He comes
41:54in with
41:54his attorney
41:55and stands
41:57up and
41:58pleads not
41:59guilty.
42:00It was
42:01really mind
42:01boggling to
42:02everybody because
42:03he confessed
42:04right away that
42:06he did it.
42:06so he
42:07goes into
42:07trial.
42:10The
42:10evidence going
42:11to trial is
42:11overwhelming.
42:13Jeremiah
42:13Bean is
42:14convicted of
42:15five counts
42:15of first
42:16degree murder
42:17and
42:18sentenced to
42:18death.
42:20They say
42:20the death
42:21penalty is
42:21revenge.
42:24They're
42:24right.
42:26It is.
42:27Time for you
42:27to say
42:27goodnight,
42:28Jeremiah.
42:29Death is
42:30permanent and
42:31he didn't
42:32care.
42:34He killed
42:35five innocent
42:35people that he
42:36didn't even
42:36know.
42:38People that
42:38had families,
42:39people that
42:39had kids and
42:40grandkids and
42:41didn't think
42:41twice about it.
42:44What I learned
42:44from this case
42:45is keep an open
42:46mind because
42:47anything can
42:47happen and
42:48as much as I
42:49like to look
42:49at the good
42:50in people,
42:51there are wolves
42:51among us that
42:52will do
42:53terrible things.
42:54the last time
42:59I was out here
43:00to attend to
43:01Ellie's cross
43:02was about
43:03two and a
43:04half,
43:04maybe three
43:04years ago.
43:08It just
43:09is a reminder
43:10that he's not
43:10forgotten.
43:11The sickest part
43:24about the
43:24whole thing,
43:25if that
43:27slimy son
43:27of a bitch
43:28had gone
43:29over to
43:30Bob and
43:30said,
43:30hey man,
43:31I need to
43:31make a
43:32couple of
43:32bucks,
43:33he would
43:34have hired
43:34him to
43:36help him
43:36pull weeds
43:37or do
43:37whatever,
43:39but what
43:40does he do?
43:40He kills
43:41him.
43:43Angry
43:43is what
43:44it makes
43:45me.
43:46How dare
