01:44Como você não poderia estar lá?
01:46Onde está minha irmã agora?
02:16Onde está minha irmã agora?
02:46Mas depois de ter essas imagens e o que ele fez para minha mãe,
02:50eu nunca me perguntei.
02:53Ever.
02:55Por o que ele fez.

04:09Just showing the blending of two families
04:12Yeah, it's all of them
04:13My mother, Danny, Jetta, Brad, you and Grandma
04:19And all seven of the kids
04:21And Shirley was the oldest, she was
04:25She ran the roost
04:26Yep
04:26Well then, here's my dad
04:29She got married awfully young, 20 years old
04:32She looks very happy
04:35Divorced really young too
04:37That would have been Mom and Kelly
04:42Because Kelly was born in 70
04:44When I was little, she used to bring me over here all the time
04:47And then go off to her jobs
04:49When she was done
04:50She'd clean four or five houses
04:52And then she'd bartend, you know
04:55Three or four different places in the same night
04:57It's not easy for a single mom to raise two kids on her own
05:00Yeah, she
05:02Definitely
05:05Put herself last
05:07It was never herself
05:23It was for her family
05:26She did without a lot of things
05:28To make sure that her family did not
05:31If you would offer her help, she wouldn't take it
05:35She was never
05:36Right, she was stubborn
05:37She, you know
05:38She had her fright
05:40You do get that, you know, if we'd helped her out more
05:48Maybe she wouldn't have taken that job
05:50And she wouldn't have been there
05:50So, but
05:53And plus, you know, you're raised
05:56You're a brother
05:57You're supposed to take care of her
05:58Yeah
05:58You're supposed to protect her
06:00Yeah
06:02It's your job
06:03My mom, Shirley, she didn't have a very big of clientele of how she was going to do it
06:21My mom, Shirley, she didn't have a very big of clientele of how she was cleaning
06:34She had very bad knees
06:35Arthritis that started setting in
06:38She was getting at the end where she was going to retire
06:43My mom, at that time in her life, she did not have the greatest relationship with my sister, Kelly
06:51A lot of things were going on with my sister
06:57Kelly was seeing a man
07:03And Shirley was very confrontational to him because he was, was violent
07:08He had a very bad temper
07:14And Shirley didn't want Kelly to be around him or her grandchildren
07:21Because he was abusive
07:24My mom was trying to help in every way she possibly could
07:32But it was taking a toll on her
07:33And it caused a lot of tension with, um, within the family
07:39Two bodies have been found in a home in Dundee
07:53An upscale neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska
07:56With no apparent motive for the slayings
07:59Detectives are...
08:00I was supposed to meet my mom in the afternoon
08:03I seen something on the news, breaking news
08:05Obviously it was on every news channel
08:07About a double homicide in Dundee
08:09And I, you know, I didn't think anything of it
08:12Just kind of glanced at it
08:13Detectives are hoping that neighbors can provide clues
08:16So I kind of went about my day
08:18Went and ran some errands, did this, did that
08:20Later that evening, um, just kind of hanging out
08:25And I, I remember I called my mom a few times
08:27And she never answered, she never answered
08:33And I, the young man said, she didn't tell me
08:46And, she is supposed to be live
08:50osed in YouTube
08:50Cheap
08:51Eu got a call about midnight
09:10from Danny and he just
09:12basically said
09:14Shirley's been murdered
09:16when he said that I knew instantly
09:22what it was
09:24what it's seen on TV
09:25it's
09:32it's so stunning you just don't know what to do
09:40don't know what to say
09:42I just remember just
09:56in total shock
09:58in denial it's like nah this is
10:00this ain't real
10:01there's no way
10:04who would
10:06who would do that to my mom
10:07the day we found out
10:24that Shirley had been murdered
10:25I think we were all in shock
10:28I think we were all numb
10:29we couldn't process this
10:31it didn't make sense
10:33why
10:34why would anyone murder
10:36I was called to the scene
10:46the police chief called
10:49and said
10:49I think you should come
10:51to this location
10:51the residents belong to the Hunter family
11:04both Mr. and Mrs. Hunter were both doctors
11:07we had been told that there's a female
11:10deceased
11:11and there's a young boy
11:13who was deceased
11:14we found out that one person
11:17the female Shirley Sherman
11:19was somebody who was a cleaning lady
11:22for the Hunter family
11:23who came on certain days of the week
11:25and this was her day to be there
11:26the child was
11:31the child of the Hunters
11:33Tommy Hunter
11:34Dr. Hunter came home from work
11:43that day at the Creighton Pathology Department
11:45probably sometime later in the afternoon
11:475-ish, 5.30
11:49and when he got home
11:53he immediately saw
11:54what he saw
11:55and he called 911
12:02I drove into Omaha
12:11to the Dundee neighborhood
12:13and showed up
12:15and the police were still there
12:16it was still taped off
12:17I remember getting approached
12:19by County Attorney Don Klein
12:21she's still inside that house
12:23they haven't even moved her yet
12:25she's still
12:26laying there
12:29I mean, you can't see her
12:32they won't let you go in
12:33they won't let you touch nothing
12:34I wanted to just
12:38lift the police tape up
12:40and run in there
12:41and see my mom
12:43one last time
12:44there's a stairway
12:58that goes upstairs
12:58in the residence
12:59Shirley Sherman
13:00was found
13:01the base of that stairway
13:02in a hallway
13:02she was draped over
13:04kind of a little step
13:05she had been stabbed
13:07she had no defensive wounds
13:11Tommy Hunter was laying on a big rug
13:15that was on the dining room floor
13:16his glasses were on the floor next to him
13:21he was also stabbed
13:23there was no sign
13:26that he had any defensive wounds either
13:28this person
13:30whoever was the perpetrator
13:32caught them by surprise
13:33there was nothing missing from the residents
13:35and also from the individuals
13:36I think Shirley Sherman had a purse there
13:38and there was money that was in her purse
13:40so a robbery as a motive
13:42was eliminated pretty early on
13:43why would somebody kill
13:46Shirley Sherman and Tommy Hunter
13:49who really aren't related to each other
13:50other than her
13:51doing work at their house
13:53so it was a difficult one to process
13:56from that standpoint
13:57from the very beginning
13:58they were both killed
14:03by these stab wounds to their neck
14:05that severed their carotid arteries
14:07the knives were left in their necks
14:11with the butt end of the knife
14:14protruding out of their neck still
14:16the knives that were used
14:22in the murder
14:23were taken from a butcher block
14:25inside the house
14:26which everyone thought was unusual
14:28if somebody was coming to do a murder
14:30that they wouldn't have the murder weapon with them
14:32the knives that were left in the neck
14:35it was almost a sign or a message
14:36that somebody wanted to leave
14:39and that's why there was this question
14:41of whether this was some grudge
14:43or somebody who hated somebody
14:44or wanted to send a message to someone
14:47immediately they started to canvas the area
14:55to see if there was anybody
14:56who saw anything suspicious or unusual
14:58during the time immediately
15:00prior to the bodies being found
15:02nice day it was that day
15:05you know it was warm
15:06it was spring
15:07a lot of people in the neighborhood
15:09you wouldn't be able to go undetected
15:10in that neighborhood
15:11they did find some neighbors
15:14who had seen Tommy get off the school bus
15:18and go to the house that day
15:21there were some neighbors
15:28who had seen an unusual car
15:29that looked like it was looking for an address
15:32that had stopped in front of the hunter residence
15:34it's a silver SUV
15:37with only a plate on the back
15:39and there were people who saw an individual
15:42walking down the street
15:44that was in a suit
15:47and had a satchel
15:49and even somebody actually saw this individual
15:57walk up to the front door of the hunter residence
16:00questions remain in the murders of shirley sherman and thomas hunter
16:09who were found stabbed to death in the dundee neighborhood of omaha on thursday
16:15the omaha police department requested myself and my brothers dan and terry to take a lie detector test
16:24we weren't very happy about that
16:26we weren't very happy about that
16:27we weren't very happy about that because why
16:31we were told everybody is a suspect until they're eliminated
16:37there was questions about shirley sherman's background if there's anybody in her history that that might want to come after her
16:53there were tips that came in potential leads
17:05there's only maybe one or two people that we knew of at the time that may have disliked my mom
17:10one of the individuals was an acquaintance of my sister's
17:17we knew shirley was very offensive towards him
17:22we did feed kelly's boyfriend to the wolves
17:31do you currently live in omaha
17:35but were they capable of doing such a crime
17:40there were people who saw an individual walking down the street
17:46prior to the tommy hunter and shirley sherman homicide
17:49there was a composite sketch drawn from the different witnesses
17:55the individual who did this was cautious or very careful
18:07because they didn't leave anything from a forensic standpoint
18:10there was no fingerprints
18:15no hair that they left
18:18no dna
18:19this had to be somebody that really knew what they were doing
18:24are you currently seeing kelly sherman there was a stone that was unturned
18:30there was a lot of looking a lot of exhausting work done
18:33do you have any information about the death of shirley sherman
18:36there was a description of the individual medium build
18:39did you kill shirley sherman
18:42no
18:43olive skinned
18:44it didn't look like him
18:46he wouldn't have the knowledge to be able to inflict those stab wounds that were done
18:53the way they were
18:54thank you for your cooperation
18:56it didn't pan out at all
18:58because he was very thoroughly investigated
19:02he had a rock solid alibi
19:05there was no evidence tying him
19:09they had a composite sketch of the man who came to the house
19:13they had a description of his car
19:16i thought it would just be days before they had an arrest
19:21and the longer we waited
19:25the more we realized he was getting away with it
19:48within a year
19:50the police department came back to us
19:53and asked us if we were still willing to post a reward
19:56we said yes
19:58this was discussed with with the entire family
20:01i mean it was people that said
20:03we don't think some of these people are going to come forward for twenty five thousand dollars
20:07they've got a lot of money and they're not gonna
20:09you know
20:10and we said well let's go ahead and increase it
20:12so this is what we did
20:15i don't know how many thousands of those posters we had made up
20:18and we distributed them
20:19we went around businesses and stuff
20:22and we put them out
20:23every place we could get them
20:25we want to remind people that this happened
20:29you know if anybody knows something
20:31to please come forward with it
20:33you're waiting for that phone call
20:36it's going to come
20:38is this the call
20:41i'm always looking for that 444 number to come up to the police department
20:46Omaha police have announced an astonishing new development
21:01into the murders of thomas hunter and shirley sherman
21:04after three years of no leads
21:06no theories no anything
21:07i was sitting at home one evening watching the news
21:10the perpetrator might have communicated
21:12the omaha police department were looking into thomas hunter's computer
21:16focus now with the murder
21:18some detectives were working very specifically on
21:21checking out everybody who had been online with thomas
21:24as he played these video games
21:26was thoughts about somebody who was a predator
21:28about for children
21:30who was looking for him
21:33the police were looking into
21:35possible people that he was gaming with
21:38online and pulling ip addresses and interviewing
21:41potential suspects possibly tied to the murders
21:45we dig deeper keep working the case
21:48it was very exciting inside to see the case start getting going in the right
21:52direction that there was a lead
21:54the lead that we haven't had for two or three years
21:57good feeling inside we're getting a step closer to catching the sky
22:02all right that's good
22:08i was becoming very impatient
22:21and not getting answers
22:23my frustration level was starting to grow
22:25my anxiety was starting to grow
22:29the gaming theory went nowhere the police weren't making any progress with it
22:33anybody's ip address that they had pulled
22:35they interviewed those individuals all those individuals checked out
22:39so therefore we're led to zero suspects and it's cold again
22:49they're digging for something that's not there
22:51they're not digging in the right spot
22:55this has something to do with the hunter family
22:59that my mom was not the target
23:02there's just no way in hell that she was the target
23:14things weren't going anywhere so uh dan had the idea of possibly hiring a private investigator
23:24i know i never had any intention of ever stopping and i don't think brad did or anybody else in our
23:29family and we pulled some of our own money together to pay for it
23:33i don't think you can sit around and not do anything
23:36i mean it's it's a matter of right and wrong
23:42the private investigator i remember from the investigation that he did he kind of profiled him
23:49and said that this guy is going to kill again
23:51trying to outsmart justice tell me exactly what's happened to your fiancee she's dead
24:06are they still conscious and breathing i don't think so sometimes the call for help
24:12is the first clue to murder brand new 999 murderer calling thursday on id
24:32i was coming out of my marriage um spent a lot of time at the bar working out of town
24:46not much to do in a small town in colorado and there's nothing but
24:50sand and tumbleweed rolling around just kind of stuck like you know five years gone by still don't
24:55have any killer i'm going through a divorce life really sucks
25:02i get a phone call from my uncle danny he says what you doing i was like i'm just sitting
25:10in my hotel room and he goes well there's been another set of murders
25:2010 07 79 go ahead i'm gonna need a squadron got two parties down inside
25:26one white male maybe 50 60 and a female party i'm gonna need to hear please
25:30pretty happy unconscious parties 73 to 79 do you need another car
25:35yes 73 to 79 coming to the front door
25:44we received a phone call that the police were investigating a pair of homicides that occurred
25:49in southwest omaha we went to that scene and that was the murder of dr roger brumbach
25:59and his wife mary
26:04roger had been shot
26:10but he'd also had a stab wound to the right side of his neck
26:14that had gone through his carotid artery and mary brumbach obviously had come on to this location
26:24after probably hearing something happen with her husband roger
26:27and it was very obvious that she was involved in a fight to the death
26:34she had defensive wounds all over her arms her thumb was almost severed
26:38and the significant stab wound again was a stab wound to the right side of the neck
26:42uh through the carotid
26:47the manner of death on the right side of the neck if you relate it back to tommy hunter and shirley
26:52sherman was eerily similar
26:54so that really it had me jumped up off the bed
27:01going wow what is going on here
27:06and then the link was discovered that both dr hunter
27:10and dr brumbach they were both physicians
27:13dr hunter and dr brumbach were co-leaders of the pathology department at creighton
27:28there's a connection here
27:29the pathology department doctor and his wife were stabbed i mean it's just it's a one-way train
27:52i mean it's like somebody hitting you with a sledgehammer
27:54it's the same person i mean how couldn't it be
28:05there's a tremendous amount of research then it's done about the history of the creighton
28:08pathology department everybody who worked there everybody who was a resident there
28:14everybody who was under the mentoring of dr hunter and dr brumbach as much information as could be found out
28:21thank you again
28:27detectives came upon somebody
28:30and saw some things in that file that were a breakthrough moment where he said oh my gosh
28:36i think we've got everything we need i think we have something here the file of dr anthony garcia
28:41anthony garcia was accepted at creighton's pathology program as a resident
28:55and didn't do very well there he had a lot of missteps
28:59he had a poor relationship with his supervisor dr butra
29:07and there was a lot of correspondence back and forth between dr butra and garcia about that relationship
29:17he thought he was being picked on he thought he was being mistreated
29:20dr butra felt that garcia had a problem with his attitude the way he treated other residents the way
29:29he treated faculty the way he treated staff dr butra was very strong in her criticism of him and
29:35eventually took that criticism to dr brumbach and dr hunter dr hunter and dr brumbach both signed the
29:41letters that terminated garcia from the program at creighton university
29:58once we found garcia there was some sort of a motive that he might have had because of his termination
30:03from the program he was looking into his history in 2013 he had moved to terahout indiana his history
30:13was mostly failure he started a residency program at lsu once lsu though found out about creighton
30:22they actually contacted dr hunter and that was part of how he was terminated from their program
30:30the termination of that residency program at lsu was about two weeks prior to the tommy hunter and
30:40shirley sherman homicide it's a breakthrough moment it is that we've got something here
30:52let's do some more checking into his background let's find out what sort of vehicle he was driving
30:58what he had registered to him it was a silver honda suv
31:07which matched the description of the car that was given by the witnesses
31:12the suspicions just continued to heighten in regard to anthony garcia we thought we had developed
31:19enough probable cause uh to issue a warrant for his arrest let's go
31:28the céu
31:31fbi agents omaha homicide officers went to his residence at terahout indiana
31:37A casa que ele viveu, o furniture foi praticamente perdido.
31:52Era como se fosse alguém que nunca ia voltar a essa casa.
31:57Também foram também pequenas notas que nós encontramos.
32:01Eles estavam preocupados, você sabe, onde ele estava agora?
32:10A new 999-murder-a-calling, Thursday, no I.D.
32:14A new 999-murder-a-calling.
32:44A new 999-murder-a-calling.
33:14Tommy Hunter, Shirley Sherman, and Roger and Mary Brumbach.
33:35I got a phone call from my brother Dan
33:38and I was on the interstate
33:41and he told me, he says
33:43they've made a rest.
33:46I mean, I had to pull over
33:48and stop.
33:50And, oh,
33:52I tell you, it felt so good
33:53just to hear that.
33:55Just to hear that.
34:02It's like a great weight got lifted
34:04off me. Five years worth
34:06of frustration and
34:08disappointment
34:09was lifted off my shoulders.
34:11But there was something
34:14in the back of my mind
34:15that's probably in the back
34:16of a lot of people's minds.
34:18Did they got the right guy?
34:19When we searched
34:27the residence of
34:29Anthony Garcia,
34:31all his personal papers were put up
34:33in a neat stack on top of the desk.
34:37He had a garbage bag that was in the sink
34:39and it looked like some chemical had been poured on it.
34:42In that garbage bag was
34:43reports from Dr. Butra.
34:45The termination letter from Creighton
34:48signed by Roger Brumbach
34:50and Dr. Hunter.
34:52All those things
34:53that motivated him.
34:56There's credit card information
34:57that shows that he purchased
34:59something to eat
35:00at a wing stop
35:01at 72nd and Pacific.
35:07He was in Omaha, Nebraska
35:09on the day that we believed
35:11that Roger and Mary Brumbach
35:13were murdered.
35:16The evidence from his cell phone
35:18showed that on that date
35:20when he was at the wing stop
35:22he searched on his phone
35:24for Roger and Mary Brumbach's address
35:26found it
35:28and then went to their house.
35:32One of the things that came up
35:57from the scene processing
35:59in the hallway there
36:00there was a small piece
36:02of what would be
36:03the front part
36:04of a 9mm.
36:09Magazine was laying on the floor
36:11so it was apparent
36:12there was some sort of
36:12a malfunction of this gun
36:14and it broke
36:15because Dr. Brumbach was shot
36:18but then he was also stabbed.
36:22Mary Brumbach was only stabbed.
36:24She was not shot.
36:26So it appeared
36:27that there was a malfunction
36:28of some sort of the weapon.
36:31Got the weapon?
36:33There was research done
36:34as to what type of gun
36:35this came from.
36:37Semi-automatic
36:38SD9
36:40Smith & Wesson.
36:46When we searched
36:47the residence
36:48there was a box
36:50from this type of firearm.
36:52Anthony Garcia
36:57had purchased
36:58one of these types
36:59of guns
37:00in Terre Haute, Indiana
37:01months before
37:03the Brumbach murder
37:04was committed.
37:08Derek Moist decided
37:09it was the Omaha detective
37:10decided
37:11I'm going to check
37:11locations around the country
37:13to see if this gun
37:14has ever turned up
37:15in any other departments.
37:17There was a small
37:18sheriff's department
37:19in Indiana
37:20I think it was like
37:2215-20 miles
37:23from Terre Haute
37:24and a FedEx driver
37:26had pulled his truck
37:27over on an exit ramp
37:29in that area there
37:30off the interstate
37:30and was going to
37:32relieve himself
37:33off the road there
37:35and he saw
37:36what looked like
37:37a piece of
37:38a big part of a gun
37:39laying on the side
37:40of the road.
37:43So the sheriff's office
37:44came, picked that up
37:45put it in their
37:46property room
37:47and sure enough
37:48it was the bottom half
37:49of that SD9
37:52that Anthony Garcia
37:56had purchased
37:57and the serial number
37:59matched the serial number
37:59from the box
38:00at his residence.
38:09We felt we had
38:10a strong case
38:10because we felt
38:11Anthony Garcia
38:11was the perpetrator
38:12of these crimes.
38:13we were able
38:17to try them together.
38:27First day of trial
38:28I did not know
38:28what to expect.
38:30I just know
38:30that the prosecution
38:31was going to go first.
38:33Don Klein came out
38:34guns blazing
38:35went for shock value
38:36on the jury
38:37and put up
38:41all the crime scene
38:41photos
38:42and
38:43first photo
38:45was my mom
38:46and I have
38:47that image
38:48something I've
38:50never seen
38:51you know
38:52of her laying
38:53in the hallway
38:54with
38:55blood
38:56all over the place
38:58laying in her own
39:00blood
39:00blood down
39:00the hallway
39:01there was a
39:07split second
39:09there
39:09where I felt
39:11like jumping
39:11over the pews
39:12jumping on the other
39:14side
39:14and breaking
39:15his neck
39:16I did
39:18it was there
39:19the only thing
39:21standing between
39:21me and him
39:22were four
39:23sheriff's
39:24deputies
39:26in the courtroom
39:26as I'm sitting
39:35here right now
39:36I still got that
39:37image
39:37can't get it out
39:39you know
39:54it's a son's love
39:56for his mother
39:57to protect his mom
39:58protect his family
39:59protect his sister
40:00that's like
40:02that was my job
40:03as a man
40:04well
40:07I didn't get
40:08to protect her
40:09I never
40:10got that chance
40:12to make sure
40:14my mom was safe
40:15and I felt like
40:15that was taken
40:17away from me
40:18can I sit with you
40:20would you like to be
40:22in a movie shot
40:23get a shot
40:26get a shot
40:26at the end of the
40:35trial
40:35the jury deliberated
40:36that night
40:36and into the next
40:37day
40:37the verdict was
40:41announced
40:42the jury found him
40:44guilty of all
40:45four counts
40:46of first degree murder
40:46the question
40:53the question
40:53I always think
40:54about is
40:54if he hadn't
40:55come back
40:56in 2013
40:57would we have
40:58ever resolved
40:59the case
41:00from 2008
41:01do you think
41:03he would have
41:03I don't know
41:05so he could have
41:09gotten away with it
41:09it's possible
41:10he could have
41:11gotten away with it
41:12the families
41:23have been sitting
41:24on the sidelines
41:25through most
41:26of the case
41:26and the victim
41:28impact statement
41:29helps them
41:30kind of have
41:32that opportunity
41:32to be heard
41:33to express
41:34some of the emotions
41:35that they might have
41:36that they're going
41:37to have to go through
41:38for the rest
41:38of their lives
41:39I know what I wanted
41:42to say to this guy
41:43five years prior
41:45maybe ten years prior
41:47since the day
41:47he murdered my mom
41:48this is your
42:00victim impact statement
42:01this is what you
42:02delivered in court
42:03you want me to read this
42:05okay
42:06Mr. Garcia
42:10does not deserve
42:12my forgiveness
42:12he doesn't deserve
42:14nothing from my family
42:15or from anybody
42:17at family gatherings
42:22weddings

42:31put through this
42:32and it's going
42:33to continue
42:34today will not
42:36be the last chapter
42:37we know that
42:38I am left
42:40with the constant
42:41images
42:41from the courtroom
42:42of my mom
42:43laying in a pool
42:44of her own blood
42:45I can't get those
42:48images out of my head
42:49so how do you
42:51have closure
42:51over something
42:52you are constantly
42:53reminded of
42:54day after day
42:55you don't forget
42:57you can't
42:58so it is just

44:04perfectly clear
44:04I have days
44:10that it hurts

44:14that I'm really
44:15happy she was
44:16in my life
44:16I'm glad that
44:17I can still see
44:18her and hear her
