00:30Welcome again to this special cup tie edition of the big match.
00:52Today we bring you three of yesterday's third round ties,
00:54all between first division clubs.
00:56The main match is Spurs against Stoke City,
00:58and we're going to support that one with Leicester City against Sheffield United
01:01and the mighty battle between Derby County and Everton.
01:05Three ties that'll provide the real flavour of the FA Cup.
01:09And first we go to White Hart Lane.
01:11Many times over the years we've been able to bring you the action and the atmosphere from this famous stadium.
01:15But today we can take you some way behind the scenes on this cup tie day
01:19to the panelled corridor outside the White Hart Lane dressing rooms.
01:23The Spurs dressing room is at this end of the corridor.
01:26Meanwhile, Stoke City are preparing at the far end.
01:29There's Ian Moores, just returning from the boat room where he's been adjusting his studs.
01:33It's a scene of calm order, of tranquility almost,
01:36although outside, just a few yards away,
01:38the crowd are getting themselves into the mood for a third round cup tie.
01:43And as we go back inside to that panelled corridor,
01:46Stoke City are just about ready to leave their dressing room,
01:49led by skipper Jimmy Greenoff.
01:51Now the crowd see them,
02:18though the majority there, of course, are waiting for the arrival of Spurs.
02:22And they won't have to wait long as Steve Perryman opens that door to lead his team out.
05:05Robertson not touching the ball.
05:07Here's Moores.
05:09Definitely a premium in keeping the ball on the ground this afternoon.
05:12Moores with a long shot in that.
05:13Villy nearly caught Jennings out.
05:18Well struck shot there by Ian Moores.
05:20And Jennings needing to dive quickly to save it.
05:23Mahoney.
05:25Mahoney.
05:26Sammons.
05:27Now Hudson.
05:30Hudson again.
05:31A little lucky there.
05:32Taking a one-two and it's come through for Hudson but the whistle had gone.
05:35A free kick to Stoke.
05:40A free kick to Stoke.
05:42Who might regret that the advantage wasn't played but it was a very difficult one there for Bob Matthewson.
05:47The ball between his legs now as Sammons is quite a blaster.
05:56And Hudson behind it.
05:57And it's Sammons who blasted it.
05:59It took a deflection on the way.
06:01And Jennings nicely behind it.
06:11Pratt's backward header.
06:12Cheva's a touch on for Napoli.
06:17Inside for John Pratt.
06:21Left foot.
06:22Deflected off Hudson.
06:23Cheva's hoping to make something of it and could still.
06:26Oh and Shilton a good push over the top under great pressure from Duncan.
06:33Pratt started it.
06:36And Cheva has did well to turn that ball back.
06:38And Shilton was in a lot of trouble under pressure from Duncan.
06:41But still managed to push it over.
06:43Nowhere.
06:46Naylor hearing outside him.
06:48Here's Terry Naylor.
06:49Time to cross it.
06:50Chivers on the far side.
06:52And Duncan might get there.
06:54Chivers might get there.
06:55And in the end Stoke are happy to scramble that one away.
07:00Again good pressure by Spurs on Stoke.
07:02Shilton appeared to have that ball and then didn't get it in the end.
07:10So Chivers with another throw.
07:12Pratt with the backward header.
07:13Shouldn't have been allowed to have done that.
07:16And Coates almost got in.
07:17Pratt trying to turn it back.
07:18Duncan might turn on it.
07:19Naylor might get in.
07:20And in the end Stoke in a certain amount of disarray get the ball away with Hudson to Moores.
07:28Now with Robertson.
07:30Osgood.
07:34Crowd getting behind Tottenham now but it's a throw to Stoke.
07:37And a lot of work for Peter Shilton to do.
07:42The paper in that Stoke goal mouth.
07:46Quite amazing.
07:49Naylor.
07:54Now Chivers.
07:56Oh, and Whistle had gone.
07:58The linesman was flagging.
08:01But he showed a bit of his old form there.
08:03The way he turned on that one and struck it.
08:08And now Stoke with a chance to break away with Jimmy Robertson.
08:11Hurdling over one challenge.
08:12Going past Willie Young.
08:14Now could this be a goal for Jimmy Robertson?
08:16In the end nothing coming of it.
08:19As Osgood turns it behind for the corner.
08:23While he hurdled past the challenge.
08:25He whistled past Willie Young.
08:28One would have thought that he could have taken it a bit further.
08:31And in the end it was a corner.
08:34Much to the relief I'm sure of Pat Jennings.
08:37And all the Tottenham players.
08:41So Sammons with a corner.
08:44Alan Dodds up.
08:45Not a particularly big fellow.
08:50And Ian Moores is right in there.
08:51Curling in.
08:52Jane Saitkins.
08:53Naila.
08:58Sammons to Hudson.
08:59Robertson.
09:00Green off.
09:01Naylor.
09:08Salmons to Hudson.
09:12Robertson.
09:17Greenoff.
09:21Robertson, the high one. Ian Moores is there in a good position too.
09:25Salmons trying to turn it, and it's just over.
09:28The long cross, beautifully knotted down for Stoke by Ian Moores.
09:35Difficult job really for Salmons, hitting it on the turn, but he wasn't far out.
09:58Pratt.
10:04Gotta go back, and it might come for Duncan.
10:06Oh, and Shilton saved it.
10:10A bad back pass there from Salmons, very nearly allowed Duncan to go in.
10:14An attacker back, really making trouble for his own defenders again.
10:18And Duncan coming back there, and Shilton saving.
10:21Kick it out of the air, you boys!
10:24Right, the starting ball!
10:31Robertson.
10:32Pijic.
10:33Pijic.
10:37And Osgood nodding it back comfortably there for Jennings.
10:51Headed by Glor straight to Naylor.
10:53The stop by Pijic.
10:56In goes Naylor.
10:57Hudson.
10:58Oh, and that might come for Tulis.
10:59But Hudson will get it back.
11:03With the help of Salmons.
11:08Misunderstanding between Young and Naylor.
11:10Geoff Salmons with the Stoke City throw.
11:25And he's found Greenoff.
11:30Moores.
11:31And a shot!
11:33Had to be turned round by Jennings.
11:36Spurs have had the better of it, but Stoke have looked quite interesting in one or two breaks.
11:39And that was another of them.
11:40Good play again by Ian Moores.
11:43Shot well.
11:44A good left foot.
11:46And a good turn round by Jennings.
11:49So a corner for Stoke.
12:03Corner curling in again.
12:05Fisted away.
12:06But only half got away.
12:07And it'll come for Mahoney.
12:09Lining it up.
12:10And it's a goal!
12:11And it's a run!
12:20Well, that really has set Spurs back on their haunches.
12:23The corner, as it came floating in, was never successfully cleared.
12:27Only a half punch by Jennings.
12:28And then it eventually came out to Mahoney, helped with the win behind him.
12:33A tremendous drive into the roof of the Tottenham net.
12:36Spurs 0, Stoke City 1.
12:38John Mahoney the scorer.
12:40And that, believe it or not, is his first goal of the season.
12:43And such an important one as well for Stoke City.
12:46And such an important one as well for Stoke City.
12:53Now neighbour.
12:56That's Shilton's.
12:57Some idea of how much it's gusting here.
13:04Frag really out straight there.
13:06And that's basically behind Stoke City.
13:09Massive kick by Jennings, even against the wind.
13:11And headed away, only as far as Maber.
13:14Onto that left foot.
13:15And that's where he likes to get them.
13:16And a good save!
13:18Well, Maber can be devastating on that left foot.
13:20And the gap was there, and he hit it well.
13:22And Shilton parried it even better.
13:24Hudson, Pedrick.
13:25Pratt
13:44Pratt
13:45Now this is the chance for Spurs to break right on the interval.
13:48Duncan now to Chivers.
13:53And the feet were high, but it didn't matter because the whistle was ramp.
13:54at Malibu because the whistle had gone
13:56so a very good
13:58first half for Stoke City, they took quite a
14:00battering early on when Peter Sheldon brought
14:02off a couple of saves
14:03but then John Mahoney hit a blistering
14:07drive into the roof of the Spurs net
14:08to put the visitors into the
14:10lead at half time
14:11so half time score then
14:14at White Hart Lane
14:16is Tottenham
14:180, Stoke City 1
14:20we'll be right back with the second half
14:22so Spurs get
14:34the second half away, they've not won
14:36in their last five games and they're this goal
14:38down now, it must become
14:39a fairly familiar feeling for them
14:42but they've got the wind at their backs and it's a fairly
14:44fierce one now, but must have been
14:46the most despising feature of the whole afternoon
14:48for both sets of players
14:49and here's Pratt with a shot, and it might come
14:52for Coates, it might still come for Coates
14:54and it might come for Perryman who was
14:56bustling in there
14:57but in the end it came for Sheldon
15:02Marsh
15:04Moore is trying to chest it down for Green off for his dedicated
15:20Perryman
15:21claims he was brought down by Hudson
15:23but the referee said I saw nothing
15:25and Pratt finding Neva
15:27and Pratt finding Neva
15:29a screaming shot and a beautiful save
15:33lovely piece of football there
15:37as Neva went on his way
15:39hit a beautiful shot and a fine save there from Peter Sheldon
15:43now Tulles
15:45now Tulles as Dodd misjudged that one
15:48swept wide again for Neva coming in fast
15:52but Bloor getting it away again for Moores
15:57William Young putting that one in
15:59can Duncan do something here
16:01Dodd was there
16:03and Spurs will get a corner
16:07and someone in the crowd will probably get a headache
16:09with the way that was whacked into touch by Mike Pritchett
16:11so a corner which Pratt will take
16:13William again
16:15cheers at the near post
16:17Duncan right in front of Sheldon
16:19hit low
16:21and Hudson can put it behind again
16:23and Pratt will get a second chance
16:27but Mathewson taking an interesting position there behind the goal
16:31and William right in there with a header
16:33Duncan
16:35and Matthewson taking an interesting position there behind the goal
16:37and William right in there with a header
16:39Duncan
16:41well that corner came sailing in
17:01William rose beautifully at the far post
17:05and Duncan hooked that ball in
17:0712 goals he scored now
17:09in the last 10 games
17:11Spurs 1, Stoke 1
17:13John Duncan the slower
17:15and the equaliser
17:23that's six minutes of the second ball gone
17:25and a free kick for Tottenham
17:27and the lines went agreeing on the far side
17:31what a remarkable goal scoring record John Duncan's had for Tottenham
17:41he really has lifted them away from the gloom of the start of this season
17:55he got two last week at Coventry
17:57and that's a very important goal he scored this afternoon now
17:59to make it 1-1
18:01to make it 1-1
18:03but
18:05an equaliser that Spurs deserved
18:07and now here's Chivers as they hunt for a second goal
18:09and now it comes for Perryman
18:11Cleons at the referee
18:13swept wide for Terry Naylor
18:15a deflection
18:17and over the slope cross Barclay corner
18:19up comes Young
18:23the man who caused the damage
18:25for the Spurs equaliser
18:27back comes Moores with him
18:29Tottenham
18:30Tottenham
18:31Tottenham
18:36Shilton and Dodd are the Stoke players there
18:38Duncan the man who has menaced Stoke in this early part of the second half
18:42number 10 for Tottenham
18:44but it'll come towards Willie Young again
18:46and Shilton had to turn that over too
18:48and it's another corner
18:52well the big scott nearly got in there again with that header
18:55and Shilton was under tremendous pressure to turn that over
18:58so another corner
19:02Jimmy Naber again with it
19:06and again Willie Young goes in
19:08and again the fist of Shilton turns it over
19:12but he was assaulted there by Willie Young
19:14and Young is arguing with the referee
19:16and makes his piece I think just in time
19:20the fist of Shilton getting up there to push that one away though
19:26and he's a goalkeeper under a lot of pressure at the moment
19:30Naila
19:44Shivers up under this one
19:46but Dodd beat him in the air
19:48Pratt really fighting for it now
19:50Naila
19:52Naila going outside him
19:54but Naila turning it in towards Shivers
19:56there's a shot on a turn
19:58and in fact it hit Duncan
20:00Duncan again
20:02oh and he's hit the crossbar
20:04and eventually it was Mahoney who got it away
20:08Chivers had a shot and it hit Duncan
20:10it came out to Duncan
20:12and he turned beautifully on it
20:14curled it over Shilton
20:15it hit the crossbar
20:16and Mahoney got it away for Stoke
20:18well a really brilliant start to the second half
20:28and I think a corner has been given
20:30the referee having a word with Alan Hudson about something
20:34what a look of strain on that face now
20:44as Spurs are really throwing everything at Stoke
20:47Coates turning it in
20:48Bloor gets it away
20:50and Robertson finally belting it away to Greenhoff
20:54Willie Young hearing back on the far side you can see
21:02because when Greenhoff's in possession Stoke
21:04are always in with a chance
21:06but now it's McAllister
21:08the long ball towards Duncan
21:18Pratt made for Naila
21:20took it well
21:22there's the crossing again towards Martin Chivers
21:24but Dodd is there and he might still come
21:32Osgood's header
21:34linesman flagging on the far side
21:36offside against Tottenham and a free kick to Stoke
21:44not have much to do this half
21:46as Pat Jennings
21:48I wonder if he's feeling as cold as the rest of us in this biting wind
21:50it looks as though he might be
21:56well the pass didn't match his good intentions
21:58and McAllister colliding with a Stoke player as well
22:00but here's Robertson now
22:02and Robertson could have the beating of Willie Young
22:04and this could be dangerous for Tottenham
22:06as Greenhoff goes roaring in there
22:08and in the end
22:10it's Naila who got it away
22:12Moores was right in there too
22:14in fact it was Moores and not Greenhoff who got right in there
22:18Greenhoff
22:20down and injured after that collision at the other end of the field
22:22and then a bit of trouble
22:26and then a bit of trouble
22:28Sammons
22:30crossing again
22:32Naila's header
22:34getting it away but not very far
22:36Marsh heading it back again
22:44Greenhoff
22:46well that fell for Coates
22:50and Duncan is onside
22:52now Marsh for Stoke
23:06and here again
23:08Coates
23:14oh nicely for Duncan
23:16and here again and saved well by Schildern
23:18but if only Duncan had been on the target in the first instance
23:22when he was right through
23:24it might have had a different result
23:26he was there without really catching it properly
23:28on the second occasion after that pass from Coates
23:30McAllister
23:36hit hard towards Chilerts
23:38got up well
23:40combined well with Duncan and his Chilerts again
23:42hitting it well
23:44just over
23:52well he looked through all the world
23:54as though he was going to get that
23:56in lethal fashion on his right foot
23:58in the end he did and he was just too high
24:00in the end he did and he was just too high
24:02and Coates will now go off
24:10and Chris Jones
24:12the young Channel Islander with six goals through his credit
24:16will come on
24:18in
24:24here's McAllister
24:26now Chilerts
24:28now Chilerts
24:30McAllister again
24:32planted forward first time towards Duncan
24:34oh and Pejic might have given a chance there
24:36oh what a great piece of goalkeeping by Schildern
24:38Pejic's back pass was never going to reach the goalkeeper
24:42Pratt went in
24:44slightly hindered I think by a Stoke player
24:46but Schildern came out like a bullet
24:50summons
24:52had a quiet game
24:54block down
24:56and that's the final whistle
24:58and Stoke have got a replay
25:00Schildern who made some excellent saves
25:02some really fine goalkeeping from him
25:04with John Duncan having scored the equaliser for Tottenham
25:06five minutes into the second half
25:08after John Mahoney the number four
25:10had put Stoke into the lead
25:12on the half hour
25:14a game that was spoiled to a certain extent
25:16by the high win
25:18but a good deal of excitement in it for all that
25:20all-time scorer
25:22which means a replay at Stoke on Wednesday
25:24Spurs one
25:26Stoke one
25:28Stoke no doubt more pleased by that result than Spurs
25:30but let's get an instant reaction from the Spurs goal scorer
25:32John Duncan and manager Terry Neal
25:34as they made their way back to the dressing rooms
25:36Can I just have your immediate reaction to the game?
25:38Well I thought
25:40we almost pressurised them into getting the winner near the end
25:42but I thought
25:44we almost pressurised them into getting the winner near the end
25:46but I thought
25:48we're by no means finished yet
25:50I'm sure we'll do well on Wednesday
25:52I think it's Wednesday the replay
25:54Tell us a bit about your goal
25:56Well I saw Willie Young was winning the header
25:58and I just followed it over and followed it around
26:00and managed to get a good connection
26:02and it went in
26:04When you were in our studios yesterday watching Stoke play
26:06I heard you say that you're a lucky man
26:08but in fact you're a bit unlucky with the effort that hit the bar
26:10Yeah, but I don't complain
26:12you get your share, I'm happy to get one
26:14I think really my immediate reaction is that
26:16it was a fine game
26:18keenly contested game
26:20and I look forward to that
26:22game on Wednesday
26:24We've been playing well away from home
26:26But you didn't win, where did it go wrong for you today really?
26:28I don't think it was a question of it going wrong
26:30I think the lads played very well
26:32considering the poor performances we've had at home
26:34Stoke are a good side, difficult side to beat
26:36as we've found in the past
26:38basically, as I say
26:40my immediate reaction is
26:42you know what a keenly contested cup tie it was
26:44and if it's something similar
26:46with the right result of course for us on Wednesday
26:48then I'll have no complaints
26:50Why has it been difficult for you playing at home?
26:52I think we've been a little bit anxious to do very well
26:56the lads have probably worked a little bit too hard at it
27:00but today I was pleased that they showed a little more composure
27:04they played good positive football
27:06and I was reasonably happy
27:08Our reporter there Martin Tyler
27:10Mind you Stoke had battled well all through the game
27:12through a good deal of pressure as well
27:14and in John Mahoney they probably had the man of the match
27:16for the amazing amount of work that he got through as he always does
27:20and of course for his wonderful goal
27:22and in the Stoke dressing room I asked John Mahoney
27:24for his reaction to this Stoke City performance
27:27Well I thought it was a workman like performance
27:30you know the conditions weren't really favourable for good football
27:34you know the wind was a swirling wind
27:36and the pitch was drying
27:38and I think it made it a bit difficult for both sides to control the ball
27:42Tony Waddington said you were confident of getting a result here today
27:45why were you particularly confident of that?
27:47Well we played Spurs about five or six weeks ago
27:51and although they scored first you know we came back quite well
27:55and I know we could have stolen it at the end
27:57but although on the day a draw was fair
28:00you know we were quite confident of at least gaining a draw today
28:04They came for you a bit particularly in the second half today didn't they?
28:07They did yeah
28:08Just after half time first 20 minutes
28:10it was like the relief of Mafeking
28:12and I thought you know if we gave another goal away that could have been it
28:18but I thought we held on okay and then we started to break out
28:23And your first goal of the season?
28:25Yeah, it's long overdue
28:29You were helped a little bit with the wind behind you?
28:31I mean it seemed to flash into the roof of that note
28:33but I just must have hit it right you know I've been missing a few
28:37you know I've been getting over on top of them
28:39and they've been going over
28:40but just one of those things just caught it right for a change
28:44Do you think you're going to finish the job on Wednesday night?
28:46Well you never know it's tough you'd be surprised how many teams
28:50you know win the replays
28:52I wouldn't like to say we're confident enough but you know you never know football
28:57John thanks very much indeed
28:59Okay bye
29:01Good spirits there as indeed they should be
29:05though Stoke should also beware that Spurs are playing well away from home these days
29:08and indeed the Stoke defender Mike Pejic was saying just after that interview
