00:00I'll see you next time.
00:30Welcome again to the big match.
00:49Today we look at three teams who were at the top of their divisions at the start of the weekend.
00:53And for our main match we go to the third division leaders, Crystal Palace,
00:56and their match yesterday against Grimsby Town.
00:58And our studio guest is Ian Evans, the captain of Crystal Palace.
01:02In the second division we have the leaders there, Sunderland, and their home game yesterday against Orient.
01:07And finally the big one of the day, Manchester United, beginning the day at the top of Division 1,
01:12and their visit to Leeds United at Elland Road.
01:14Of course we shall also be looking at your letters, and answering the question that we set last week,
01:18well how many goalkeepers have played for England since the war?
01:21But first the action. We make a start at Selhurst Park in South London, home of Crystal Palace,
01:26now enjoying life so much more, a side that's now settled down well under manager Malcolm Allison,
01:31its eyes firmly fixed on promotion, beaten only once at home in the last 12 months,
01:35and that was against Brighton late last month.
01:38Today then, Palace come face to face with Grimsby Town, a team with a poor away record,
01:42but still lying eighth in the table, and these are the teams.
01:45Palace have made a change in defence, Jim Cannon injured, Stuart Jump comes in at three,
01:49David Swindlehurst returns to the attack at ten.
01:51As for Grimsby, a slight shuffling of their side with the dropping of Frank Barton from the defence,
01:56excellent conditions, the hope of a few goals today,
01:59and perhaps they'll come from the likes of Peter Taylor, an exciting attacker,
02:03and an England under-23 international.
02:05Or for Grimsby Town, from their top scorer of last season, Jack Lewis,
02:09who's already got five this season.
02:11The referee is Bert Newsome from Shropshire,
02:14and the loyal Palace crowd is 15,000 strong.
02:17So it's Grimsby then who set the game in motion,
02:23attacking the goal to our left,
02:25in those black and white striped shirts,
02:28black shorts and red stockings,
02:29Palace of course in their familiar red and blue stripes,
02:32blue shorts.
02:34Palace lying top,
02:36Grimsby not at all a bad start to the season there,
02:38lying eighth, although in four away games they've lost three of them.
02:41And they can expect quite a task here against the league leaders today.
02:46Malcolm Allison there,
02:47having a conversation with his chairman, Mr Raymond Bloy.
02:57And also in the director's box this afternoon,
03:00a lady in the second row in a Czech coach,
03:02you can probably see they're smiling,
03:03this is Beth Allison.
03:05Here's Holder now with a throw for Palace,
03:08Taylor.
03:09Jeffries.
03:09Oh, he didn't hit that as he wanted to,
03:13but it very nearly came off for him,
03:14and he might get a second go.
03:16Holder now,
03:17hitting it first time,
03:18and what a good one too.
03:19Headed away again by Grimsby,
03:20but Jeffries once more.
03:23Johnson.
03:23Now for Kemp.
03:25Across the goal,
03:27and a goal kick.
03:29Well, a couple of occasions there
03:31where Palace didn't quite connect properly,
03:33and as it came through to Kemp,
03:35it looked as though he might have a chance,
03:36and he didn't connect properly either.
03:37Now Mike Zussman.
03:49Evans,
03:50jump.
03:51Swindlehurst,
04:05holder hit first time.
04:11A throw given to Crystal Palace.
04:13Johnson with it.
04:15Jeffries again coming up quickly.
04:17Wall laid back for Evans.
04:25Everybody bar their goalkeeper now.
04:28Palace having the Grimsby half of the field.
04:30It's Peter Wall now,
04:31gets another cross in,
04:32but that wasn't a good one.
04:34Jeffries is there again.
04:38Johnson losing it.
04:39And a little bit of an up and a downer there
04:43between Partridge and Johnson.
04:45And being called by the referee.
04:48Bert Newsome from Shropshire.
04:51Handling this game well though.
04:56Always up with the play,
04:57looking very active,
04:58and very sympathetic to free kicks,
05:00for example,
05:01that want to be taken quickly.
05:02Stuart jump at the free kick for Palace.
05:06Ian Evans right in there.
05:07Now Peter Wall in there.
05:09And it's Wall's shot that goes over the crossbar
05:11for a goal kick.
05:15Peter Wall,
05:16the former Liverpool player.
05:25Jump.
05:25Back to Paul Howard.
05:26Now Jeffries can take it up
05:34for Crystal Palace.
05:37Hold there.
05:38That fell nicely for him.
05:40Flicked on again for Peter Taylor.
05:41There's the little cross coming in.
05:43Swindlehurst is right up there
05:44and it's just over.
05:49That's the best Palace move of the match.
05:53With a good move down the right touchline.
05:57And Taylor's cross.
05:59Swindlehurst getting up well,
06:00but a fraction too high.
06:03Tommy Casey,
06:04the Grimsey manager,
06:05in the sheepskin coat there.
06:07Up and down.
06:08Very animated indeed.
06:09Former Northern Ireland international.
06:11Played with Everton and Coventry
06:12during his playing days.
06:23Well,
06:24he needed the advantage there.
06:25And the referee in fact
06:27calling Mike Zussman back.
06:28Is he going to book him?
06:30There's the book.
06:33So with something like 23 minutes gone,
06:36and what took to be a fairly innocuous foul
06:38from this distance.
06:43Mike Zussman's name goes in the book.
06:45and Crystal Palace
06:49get another free kick.
06:58Stewart jump with it.
07:00Evans barged off that ball as he went in.
07:02Well, blow me,
07:03that was a funny decision
07:04because Evans was quite cruelly
07:06barged off that ball.
07:08Free kick given,
07:08presumably because Evans is accused
07:10of barging somebody off the ball.
07:14Terry Gunner was on the left.
07:16Coach.
07:18As I say in the centre,
07:19Paul Hinsherwood,
07:20brother of Martin Hinsherwood,
07:21playing in the number four shirt for Palace.
07:23Coming,
07:29jumping all over Taylor,
07:30another free kick.
07:31Game of stops and starts at the moment.
07:37I don't know whether that was Boylan,
07:38yes,
07:39the book is out again.
07:40That time Boylan for kicking that ball away.
07:44And that's the third name
07:45to go into the book.
07:47Boylan kicked it away.
07:50Boylan.
07:53Spelling it out.
07:57And so referee Newsome
07:58puts the third name in the book.
08:04And Palace get a free kick.
08:06Holder again.
08:08Taylor in fact.
08:09Fooled them all.
08:10And Evans is right in there.
08:12Yes.
08:14Ian Evans.
08:23Well,
08:23that free kick
08:24was punished
08:26as it came floating in.
08:28First one looked to be going to take it.
08:30And then Taylor it was
08:31who floated it in.
08:33Ian Evans
08:33up so often for those set pieces.
08:36Nodding it down.
08:37Past Waynman
08:37into the goal.
08:38Crystal Palace one.
08:39Grimsby null.
08:42Scorer Ian Evans.
08:43Goal number six of the season for him.
08:45Well, Evans who's missed absolutely nothing in the air in defence
08:58was up there to show that he misses very little when he comes forward as well.
09:05Really has had a remarkable goal scoring record including a hat-trick this season, that big number six.
09:15And that might be just the motivation that Crystal Palace need.
09:19But at the moment it's booed for Grimsby.
09:20But at the moment it's booed for Grimsby to Lewis.
09:23Flicked in again.
09:25And here's Evans.
09:27Playing for Wall.
09:28And Gray the number six for Grimsby is injured.
09:37So he took a knock in the face.
10:00Pat Malloy, the trainer there.
10:05I'm sure all Watford fans will remember him as well.
10:09It's all right again.
10:11Well, Malcolm Allison.
10:12Just a fleeting smile there.
10:14But I think he probably is aware that his side really haven't played as well as he would have hoped in the first 35 minutes or so.
10:21But they're a goal up.
10:34Pushing and shoving going on there.
10:35But I think it was six of one and a half a dozen the other.
10:37That's why the referee allowed it to go on.
10:39Geoff Johnson.
10:41David Booth.
10:42Johnson again planting it forward.
10:43Kemp is right in there.
10:45It might come for Peter Taylor to hit one.
10:47Oh, and what a great save.
10:52Well, Taylor caught that beautifully.
10:54What a volley.
10:55It must have been thigh high, left footed, hit with tremendous power.
10:59And a good save indeed by Harry Wynn.
11:04Wig.
11:05Evans.
11:08Jeffries played back for jump.
11:10Now for Wall.
11:12And now for Martin Hingerwood.
11:17Kemp.
11:23Boylan.
11:24Really a busy little player.
11:25And finally it's Gray back to his goalkeeper, Wyneman.
11:39As the whistle goes for half-time, a half that warmed up as we came towards the interval.
11:44And it was eight minutes before that interval when Ian Evans scored the only goal of the game with that header from a free kick.
11:51Although Palace have looked anything but impressive for most of the first half, it's a valuable lead and that might motivate them to better things in the second half.
11:58A lot to come on the big match this afternoon.
12:00We shall be back with the second half of this game between Crystal Palace and Grimsby in just a couple of minutes, leaving you with a half-time score at Selhurst Park.
12:07Crystal Palace one, Grimsby nil.
12:10Welcome back to Selhurst Park and it's Crystal Palace then who get us underway.
12:24Now attacking the goal to our left.
12:26One nil ahead, the goal by Ian Evans.
12:30Violent for Grimsby.
12:32Boo.
12:34That looked to be a harsh decision but it gives a free kick to Crystal Palace.
12:41Hingerwood to Evans.
12:43Now Wall, Jeffries, played forward to Holder.
12:54Evans again, gone up and stayed up but didn't seem to have the pace there to go past Cummings.
13:00But it's a throw nonetheless to Crystal Palace.
13:07The man whose goal separates these two sides.
13:11And here's Taylor.
13:11Wall.
13:16Evans.
13:19Well that came off Marley and it might come for Kemp.
13:22What a very good save by Weinman.
13:27Terrible mistake there by Marley.
13:29Gave the ball away.
13:30Kemp really seized on it.
13:32Hit it well.
13:33And Weinman saved superbly.
13:41So another corner.
13:44What a Holder and Taylor coming up with this time.
13:48In fact it's Phil Holder who hits it in and Peter Wall who came in first.
13:56Wig got it away.
13:59Johnson trying to play it wide again towards Taylor.
14:01Now it comes to Taylor.
14:05Hurling again towards Kemp.
14:06Oh me, that wasn't far off.
14:10And there's a much more business-like approach to the afternoon in the second half of Crystal Palace.
14:15As that one came in, Kemp hurled himself at it.
14:18But couldn't quite get a strong enough touch.
14:21Peter Taylor.
14:23On to Johnson.
14:24And now Kemp, he's onside.
14:27Oh, and Weinman judged that beautifully.
14:32That was a good break though by Kemp.
14:35In an onside position.
14:37And a good piece of anticipation again by Harry Weinman.
14:44Kemp again.
14:45Oh, a nice little back healer.
14:46And this time Taylor's on the move.
14:49And Cumming had gone back with him.
14:50And still Taylor.
14:52And no.
14:54And yes by Kemp.
14:56Goal given.
15:01Well, Kemp says it was easy.
15:03And it was made easy for him.
15:05By a great run by Peter Taylor.
15:09Great determination.
15:11And then it cannoned off Pinchelwood.
15:12And finally came through.
15:14A sitter really for David Kemp.
15:17And he whacked it in.
15:182-0.
15:19Crystal Palace 2.
15:21Grimsby 0.
15:23David Kemp, the former amateur from Slough, the scorer.
15:29And that's number nine for him.
15:31And there was more than an assist from Peter Taylor.
15:34Well, perhaps that'll give Palace the taste for it.
15:52Evans again getting up well.
15:54There really does seem to be no way past him.
15:56Here's Taylor.
15:57Here's Taylor.
16:02Offside.
16:07Tommy Casey goes talking on in the hope of talking Grimsby into a point.
16:10Johnson.
16:14Johnson.
16:15Zussman.
16:18Jump.
16:20Flicked on nicely there by Martin Hinshaw.
16:22What a nice touch there.
16:24Also as it comes now for Swindlehurst.
16:26But straight at Wayman.
16:29Meet build-up there by Palace.
16:34Here's Wall.
16:34Taylor.
16:44Lewis.
16:47Palace again in possession.
16:48Really dominated this second half.
16:52Johnson.
16:53On for jump.
16:56Another go.
16:59Jeffries.
17:00Jeffries.
17:00Holder making the break.
17:09That's a throw.
17:18Taylor.
17:21That's his cross.
17:22It's a good long one.
17:23Just a little too long for Swindlehurst.
17:24But here's Hinshelwood.
17:28Swindlehurst.
17:29Played there nicely for Hinshelwood.
17:31He tried so hard to get it in.
17:33But Cummings is there to turn it away.
17:36For a corner.
17:54Holder.
17:55With a corner.
17:57And a poor one.
17:59Still the Palace substitute, Paul Hinshelwood, warming up in the tunnel there.
18:10And I fancy it might be Dave Swindlehurst who comes off.
18:19The fact that they've got the number 10 ready in the box to suggest that it will be.
18:23Evans.
18:25Evans.
18:27There is Swindlehurst going for that one.
18:29And here's Swindlehurst now.
18:31But what if he should score?
18:34And he has!
18:35Well, David Swindlehurst gets number three for Palace and Paul Hinshelwood must wonder whether he's coming on now.
18:46Well, a good break from just inside the area, Taylor was in an offside position alongside Swindlehurst, but in no way influencing the play, Swindlehurst went on as Wainman came out and slipped it very comfortably indeed past the goalkeeper to make it Crystal Palace 3, Grimsby at nil, which in fact was the identical score for this match here last season.
19:08And the scorer of the third goal, Dave Swindlehurst, his third of the season.
19:14And Paul Hinshelwood has gone back on to the substitutes bench.
19:19Maybe he'll have to wait a little longer now.
19:24Played well there.
19:26Swindlehurst bundled off the ball, though, by Booth.
19:29And here's Boylan.
19:30Swindlehurst is injured.
19:35And a free kick to Grimsby.
19:38So I think it might well mean that the man who scored the third goal does go off now.
19:45Well, we're going through the old routine again of Hinshelwood warming up, and Malcolm Addison, I would have thought, a little more satisfied with the Palace showing in this second half.
20:03Evans.
20:03And Hinshelwood, or rather Swindlehurst now, coming off.
20:13A couple of minutes after scoring that third goal.
20:21And Paul Hinshelwood will come on.
20:25Had a very good game last week at Port Vale.
20:33Really challenging for a regular place here now.
20:38Shin guards, you'll notice.
20:39Jump can turn that back to Hinshelwood.
20:53Still a quarter of an hour to go.
20:54Palace comfortably leading now by three goals to nil.
20:56Hinshelwood.
21:04Gray's header.
21:09Booth.
21:12And away goes Ron Wigg.
21:13Kemp, letting that go for Taylor.
21:26Nice turn.
21:27Good control there by Peter Taylor.
21:31And Paul Hinshelwood on the far side.
21:34And he's got a corner.
21:35Up comes Evans again.
21:40Hinshelwood did it there.
21:47Ian Evans right up.
21:50And the chant of Eagles goes up again.
21:54Eagles being the Crystal Palace, the Eagle being the Crystal Palace symbol, of course.
21:58Hit lower this time.
22:00And they've probably got another corner.
22:02That one could well slice off, yes, for another corner.
22:16Gokey for Harry Wainman wanting a bit of protection.
22:21And Taylor hit lower this time.
22:23Stewart jumpers right in there.
22:26What a good variation on the corner kick that was by Peter Taylor.
22:30And jump, obviously, was aware that that was what was going to happen.
22:33Hit low and firmly.
22:35And jump was in there, but couldn't quite get the right header in.
22:41Boylan.
22:43Nicely played there for Cummings.
22:47And Partridge on the far side.
22:48Got his header in well, and as well for Crystal Palace,
22:52that Ian Evans was there to nod it away.
22:56Now Paul Hinshelwood.
22:58A nice flick inside for Peter Taylor.
23:01Oh, what a good ball there for Kemp.
23:02A lovely move this by Crystal Palace.
23:04Still with Kemp.
23:07Back for Holder.
23:08Oh, a screaming shot.
23:09It hit straight away in there.
23:14Really caught that well, Holder.
23:17Here's Hinshelwood again, with a whistle of gold.
23:19There's a lot of gold.
23:21Watch this, paraffin.
23:28Alebrity!
23:30A perquè!
23:32one
23:52i make it that we're going into the last minute now there should be a little time added on for
23:56injuries
24:02it was a foul throw back there so palace get one now paul hindu
24:12phil holder
24:18it's martin young again
24:30we're now going into injury time
24:46we're now going into injury time
24:58evans is header here's peter taylor
25:14and control it well this might still come now for kemp the last seconds of the game will that be number four it won't
25:26and it remains at 3-0
25:36and it remains at 3-0
25:38and in fact there goes the final whistle
25:54a comfortable win for crystal palace without being an impressive one
25:56with david kemp having scored in the second half
26:00and david swindlehurst as well to add to the goal that was scored in the first half
26:06by ian evans that really set palace on their way
26:10so that means for sure that crystal palace stay at the top of the third division
26:14as we have a final score line here at crystal palace
26:18palace three
26:20ian evans
26:22yes crystal palace one point clear at the top of berry who beat south end with a goal in the very last minute yesterday but now let's meet the crystal palace skipper ian evans
26:30ian evans
26:32i think one of the things that the newspapers have picked up this morning ian is the fact that that grimsby tackling was a little ferocious yesterday they had four players booked
26:38was it as ferocious to face on the field of play as it seemed
26:42well it's the thing that the crystal palace players and the club have come to expect from a game
26:46especially in the third division and probably if we get promotion in the second
26:50all clubs that come to sellers park
26:54are lifted by the atmosphere
26:56plus the names of some of our players you know there's a good squad of players there
27:02and they've made a good start they obviously wanted to continue in that certainly
27:05they're they're the top of the league or there and thereabouts
27:09every points precious to them
27:11so a physical game is a must i think
27:13yeah
27:14you can't shy away from that fact
27:16no malcolm allison your manager was saying that he thought big match viewers would be in for a treat today
27:213-0 against a hard side you really can't ask a lot more than that and yet
27:24somehow i felt there was some indefinable thing missing
27:28were you entirely satisfied with your team's performance yesterday
27:31sure that was our best home performance it's not our best performance of the season
27:36we've played a lot better as a unit and as a team away from home
27:40we've had great results but that little something that you missed out on
27:45I just can't put my finger on it myself
27:48not being out there taking part it seemed to be going quite well for us out there
27:52good well you confused I think the spectators the television commentator
27:56and the grimsby defenders too with a fair bit of jiggery-pokery that went on too
27:59particularly for example that led to this first goal scored by you
28:03what was going on now between peter taylor and phil holder here
28:06well the the referee's given the free kick for something which i don't know what what happened now
28:11just the initial run over the ball from peter taylor then signifies to the other lads what is happening
28:17and the way the grimsby players all the way all the defenders are thrown out of you know they're off the stride
28:23and there you are and i just come in there and
28:26yes i won't say it again but get in you do
28:30yeah
28:32well you've scored six goals this season
28:34yeah i've been very fortunate everything's been going right for me
28:37i could have had a couple more tell you the truth with a bit more luck
28:40including a hat trick how many of that six with your head
28:42er four out of the six and two left feet
28:45we've looked at the jiggery-pokery there we also have one or two examples of it
28:49in fact when corners are being taken when two players go off the field and raise their arms
28:54well there again there again it's just a signal to the rest of the lads that er
28:59something is on they've bit they're out there on the corner they've assessed the situation
29:03they've seen hat seen how the grimsby defense have lined up and how they've marked against us
29:08and they've that's what they're out there for is to they can read what's going to what's what's on
29:13what's the best thing
29:14that's got the mark of malcolm allison and terry venables on it hasn't it
29:16yeah sure it's terry more than malcolm although malcolm as he's saying
29:21he comes up with a fair number of free kicks terry
29:23terry young he's got one every other week he comes out with a new one
29:26we're running out of arms and legs for the signals
29:29we've got to think of more signals more than free kicks
29:32yeah
29:33the second goal was it was a good one particularly in the way that peter taylor worked it
29:37and i think the way that martin hinchelwood the number four got into another good strong attacking position
29:41let's look at that one now
29:44yes david attempts his flick on which he's always doing and they usually come off like this one
29:50there's number four martin hinchelwood
29:51martin yes
29:52from
29:53definitely did well to let that go because that was a good challenge by taylor
29:56yeah it was a great tackle he wouldn't let the defender win it he never does
29:59martin screws it there a shade and david comes in and finishes off great
30:04which is what he gets paid for and he's doing great you know that's his eighth and ninth goal now
30:09all the lads are well pleased with him as long as he can keep knocking them in for us
30:13yes indeed
30:14but martin hinchelwood is as i say you're pushing a lot of people forward in the middle of the field
30:19yes terry likes us to especially at home when they won't come at us
30:23so we go at them and martin
30:26yeah
30:27he's entitled to get two or three goals that's two or three times that he's screwed the ball wide
30:32right let's look at this third goal though where i think there's an element of offside
30:35and i think palace in all honesty we're a little bit lucky here as you look to the left of the screen
30:39peter taylor you would have thought must be at least level with the last line of grimsby defenders
30:43and he must surely be influencing the goalkeepers the goalkeeper comes out he must be aware of peter
30:48taylor on his right
30:49having said that dave swindlehurst tucking that in very well indeed
30:53i think you're a bit fortunate there but overall obviously it was a it was a win that palace thoroughly deserved
30:58i just want to talk last in briefly in about you personally i'm sure mike swith the smith the welsh team manager is aware that your form is good you play for the welsh under 23 side
31:07what are you hoping for now
31:09well i'm hoping for the to be called up into the big squad for the austria game which is coming up i believe this month or next month
31:16um he's i know he's been to at one or two of our games and every time he's turned up we've done well which has been good for me
31:24we've always won or drawn away from home so i'm hoping that uh well i've got my fingers crossed that everything will go right
31:31well that and palace of promotion wouldn't be a bad double ian evans thanks very much for coming in today
31:35thank you
31:42well for our second match today we pick up the sunderland surge if you like to call it at the top of the second division
31:50so close to promotion last season again strongly in the running now
31:53and yesterday they were at home to orient who still had to register their first away win of the season
31:57the match was covered by tie and tease television the commentators kenneth worstenholm sunderland here are in the stripes
32:06kerr with the corner for sunderland
32:17handball that surely was a penalty it is a penalty it's been given
32:22oh there's no no use
32:26only trying to say that was his chest
32:31certainly beat the ball down with his hand so with
32:3520 minutes to go before half time a clear pen
32:38robson
32:45robson
32:46has the ball in his hand
32:48tony towers is tying his shoelace
32:50and
32:51towers i think is the man going to take it
32:53yes
32:55an unfortunate blow for orient
32:57but
32:58no doubt about it
32:59had to be a penalty
33:01so
33:02tony towers of sunderland
33:05in
33:07head-to-head combat against john jackson of orient
33:10and towers
33:12and towers
33:14and no doubt about that penalty
33:19beautifully taken by towers he hit it low
33:22they're the difficult ones for goalkeepers to get but jackson wasn't far away from it
33:25yeah
33:42lord hills beating really for speed
33:44Lease for speed.
33:50To Porterfield.
33:53Oh, that was deflected.
33:59Good run.
34:01Great run by Porterfield, but what superb goalkeeping.
34:04The shot was deflected, but still Jackson managed to stretch himself and get there.
34:14Bello, forward to Cunningham.
34:23Oh, what a great tackle by Kfar.
34:26Oh, look at that for fighting spirit, by Cunningham.
34:31Homeworks to any player who will do that.
34:37Holden, shouldering his way through.
34:39Oh, what a save by Jackson.
34:49Oh, wonder Bobby Robson looks absolutely dumbfounded how Jackson got to it.
34:55Great save, but full marks to Mel Holden, the man who made all that possible.
35:03News to Malone.
35:04Holden looking at the referee then, but I think he ran into Wally.
35:14Roeder to Cunningham.
35:18Forward to Roeder.
35:20Oh, what a beautiful ball to Queen.
35:23And a lovely goal scored by Queen.
35:26But Cunningham and Roeder, the two youngsters who made it.
35:30Roeder starting the move, giving it to Cunningham.
35:32And Cunningham, the lovely reverse pass.
35:35And then the through ball from Roeder, who's one of the youngsters, played his first game
35:40this year for Orient.
35:42Through ball to Jerry Queen.
35:44And it's one goal each after 17 minutes in the second half.
35:47Sutter again for Queen.
36:01Oh, what a great header by Hewlett.
36:03Sremendous header.
36:07And a equally great save by Montgomery.
36:09Montgomery.
36:10Curl with a throw for Sunderland, back to Clarke.
36:28Just about 20 minutes left for play, one goal each.
36:36Curl, Hughes, just there.
36:40Curl, the man who sent across that beautiful centre, I could see no way that Billy Hughes
36:52could get to it, the defender was between him and the ball, but somehow Hughes got up,
36:57got his head to it, and surprised Jackson and the entire audience defence, and it's two
37:02goals to one, with about 80 minutes left for play.
37:05Hughes, Hughes to Curl, Towers, no offside, Porterfield, and it's there, Redson, the first mistake made by Jackson.
37:33Jackson looking a wee bit disconsolate, as the ball was pushed out to Ian Porterfield, Jackson
37:44momentarily appealed for offside, rightly, the referee didn't give it, and it was a middle
37:50weak centre from Porterfield, Jackson losing the ball, and Robson putting it into the back
37:56of an end.
38:05Our third match today, and it's that outstanding First Division clash between Leeds United and
38:10Manchester United, the team that began the day at the top, and a thrilling game it was
38:13too, covered by Yorkshire Television, the commentator Keith Macklin, Manchester United in the dark
38:18strip.
38:28That was Daly, attempted return ball, picked out by Gray, Pearson and Daly looking dangerous
38:34there, and good running by Daly, but away comes Leeds with Jorrup.
38:36Bremner, it's the Manchester attack which has looked the more impressive so far, Leeds obviously
38:45missing Lorimer, that bounced off Bremner, fortunately for him to Frank Gray, Eddie Gray.
38:56Leeds of course also missing all the season so far, the height of Joe Jordan, there's Hunter,
39:02there's Maidley, Maidley, clipped out for Clarke, the quick first timer, McKenzie, just over,
39:13the best move of the match complete so far, a very good ball from Clarke, curling in onto
39:19McKenzie's head, and McKenzie's header just over the top.
39:22Pearson, Hunter, Eddie Gray, Nicko, this is coming through to Pearson, and there's Bob English
39:50sitting there watching that intently, Brian Doyle, McElroy, Tom Fell, oh he's round his man,
40:02good low ball, yes!
40:15It wasn't cleared, that is Sammy McElroy's sixth goal of the season, and it gives Manchester United
40:37a 1-0 lead, a 1-0 lead in this vital match, so the Manchester United fans behind the goal,
40:45buzzing now, and certainly that goal has been on the card since the start of the game, Daly,
40:51Coffield, Daly, Coffield coming for the short!
41:07Maidley, into his stride, Clarke, Rini's going up on the overlap,
41:15Joonath, Joonath, Wackenzie, Bremner, wide, that moment in the air, for it seemed an eternity,
41:36Bremner didn't hit it right, I think he meant it to crack it.
41:39And for the first time, the Leeds attack is really putting pressure on the Manchester
41:47goal, as Clarke goes for that, the back header for Bremner trying to turn on it, that looked
41:54like arm ball, Clarke, Clarke's through, what a miss, what a miss!
41:59He normally gobbles those up, he did all the hard work, made the chance for himself, from
42:13Bremner's pass, but then blasted it over from the six-yard line.
42:18Turns, accelerates, Mackenzie now, Bremner and Clarke moving up into the penalty area.
42:30Mackenzie trying to get round the back, Clarke didn't get a hold of it, he was well
42:34full-eased by Greenhoff, Makari, good smooth break by Manchester United with Makari taking
42:42that return ball from Coppell, here's Pearson, trying to get inside Frank Gray, just didn't
42:48control it, but that was a good move by Manchester United, they were moving well.
42:55Makari.
43:01What a...
43:01That's two for Makari and two for Manchester United, a tremendous shot from 35 yards, and
43:16it looked as if David Stewart had pulled it down onto the grunt bar, but he relinquished
43:21his grip on him, and that's two.
43:24Bremner going for a longer one, into the box for Clarke's head, Jackson, corner.
43:31Bremner taking it, wanting to take it quickly.
43:41Andy Gray.
43:44Rene!
43:49Paul Rene with a heaven-sent chance of scoring only the sixth goal of his whole career.
43:57Manchester United defence caught, trying the offside trap, and Paul really hit it against
44:03Stepney.
44:04Here's the corner.
44:06Wadley.
44:07Wadley.
44:18Wadley.
44:22Wadley.
44:24Up towards Clarke.
44:25Good header.
44:26Rionov!
44:27Over the top!
44:28There, Leeds are missing the chances.
44:30is twice within a minute the chances have been there first renee then yonath clark made that
44:38beautifully that was a more difficult chance for teddy yonath an awkwardly bouncing ball
44:44but it still ranks as a chance 10 minutes remaining eddie gray to take this corner kick
44:50cherry is up there mainly yes
44:58mainly across the face of the goal clark the touch and lead tonight in
45:09back in semi-contention they still trail by one goal but that goal by alan clark
45:17his fifth of the season will give us a most exciting last nine minutes
45:25so an excellent victory for manchester united at leads but not good enough to keep them on top of
45:28the first division the queens park rangers with that brilliant 5-0 demolition of everton they've
