00:00The Lone Ranger
00:30Welcome again to this special cup tie edition of the big match.
00:51Today we bring you three of yesterday's third round ties,
00:54all between first division clubs.
00:56The main match is Spurs against Stoke City,
00:58and we're going to support that one with Leicester City against Sheffield United
01:01and the mighty battle between Derby County and Everton.
01:05Three ties that will provide the real flavour of the FA Cup.
01:09And first we go to White Hart Lane.
01:11Many times over the years we've been able to bring you the action and the atmosphere from this famous stadium.
01:15But today we can take you some way behind the scenes on this cup tie day
01:19to the panel corridor outside the White Hart Lane dressing rooms.
01:23The Spurs dressing room is at this end of the corridor.
01:26Meanwhile, Stoke City are preparing at the far end.
01:29There's Ian Moores just returning from the boat room where he's been adjusting his studs.
01:33It's a scene of calm order, of tranquility almost,
01:36although outside, just a few yards away,
01:38the crowd are getting themselves into the mood for a third round cup tie.
01:43And as we go back inside to that panel corridor,
01:46Stoke City are just about ready to leave their dressing room,
01:49led by skipper Jimmy Greenoff.
01:51Now the crowd see them,
02:18though the majority there, of course, are waiting for the arrival of Spurs.
02:22And they won't have to wait long as Steve Perryman opens that door to lead his team out.
05:05Robertson not touching the ball.
05:08Here's Moores.
05:09Definitely a premium in keeping the ball on the ground this afternoon.
05:12And Moores with a long shot in that very nearly caught Jennings out.
05:15Well struck shot there by Ian Moores.
05:21And Jennings needing to dive quickly to save it.
05:25Mahoney.
05:26Salmons.
05:28Now Hudson.
05:31Hudson again.
05:32A little lucky there.
05:32Taking a one-two.
05:33And it's come through for Hudson.
05:34But the whistle had gone.
05:35A free kick to Stoke.
05:43We might regret that the advantage wasn't played.
05:45But it was a very difficult one there for Bob Mathewson.
05:48The ball between his legs now as Salmons is quite a blaster.
05:56And Hudson behind it.
05:58And it's Salmons who blasted it.
06:00It took a deflection on the way.
06:02And Jennings nicely behind it.
06:03Pratt's backward header.
06:13Chivas a touch on for Labour.
06:19Inside for John Pratt.
06:21Left foot.
06:23Deflected off Hudson.
06:24Chivas hoping to make something of it.
06:26And could still.
06:27Oh, it's shot.
06:28And a good push over the top under great pressure from Duncan.
06:31Pratt started it.
06:36And Chivas did well to turn that ball back.
06:39And Shilton was in a lot of trouble under pressure from Duncan.
06:42But still managed to push it over.
06:45Nailer.
06:46Nailer hearing outside him.
06:48Here's Terry Nailer.
06:50Time to cross it.
06:51Chivas on the far side.
06:53And Duncan might get there.
06:55Chivas might get there.
06:56And in the end, Stoke are happy to scramble that one away.
07:01Again good pressure by squares on Stoke.
07:04Shilton appeared to have that ball and then didn't get it in the end.
07:10So Chivas with another throw.
07:13Pratt with a backward header.
07:14Shouldn't have been allowed to have gotten that.
07:16And Coates almost got in.
07:18Pratt trying to turn it back.
07:19Duncan might turn on it.
07:20Nailer might get in.
07:21And in the end, Stoke, in a certain amount of disarray, get the ball away with Hudson to Moores.
07:29Now with Robertson.
07:31Oscar.
07:34Crowd getting behind Tottenham now.
07:36But it's a throw to Stoke.
07:37And a lot of work for Peter Shilton to do.
07:43The paper in that Stoke goal mouth.
07:47Quite amazing.
07:50Neymar.
07:54Now Chivas.
07:57Oh, and the whistle had gone.
07:58The linesman was flagging.
07:59But he showed a bit of his old form there.
08:04The way he turned on that one and struck it.
08:08And now Stoke with a chance to break away with Jimmy Robertson.
08:11Hurdling over one challenge.
08:13Going past Willie Young.
08:14Now could this be a goal for Jimmy Robertson?
08:16In the end, nothing coming of it.
08:19As Ogsgood turns it behind for the corner.
08:23While he hurdled past the challenge.
08:25He whizzled past Willie Young.
08:27One would have thought that he could have taken it a bit further.
08:31And in the end, it was a corner.
08:34Much to the relief, I'm sure, of Pat Jennings.
08:37And all the Tottenham players.
08:41So, Salons with a corner.
08:44Alan Dodds up.
08:45Not a particularly big fella.
08:50And Ian Moores is right in there.
08:51Curling in.
08:52Jennings straight times.
08:53Naila.
09:09Salmons to Hudson.
09:13Robertson.
09:18Greenoff.
09:18Robertson, the high one.
09:23Ian Moores is there.
09:24In a good position too.
09:26Salmons trying to turn it.
09:27And it's just over.
09:30The long cross.
09:32Beautifully knotted down for Stoke by Ian Moores.
09:36Difficult job, really, for Salmons.
09:38Hitting it on the turn.
09:38But he wasn't far out.
09:39Pratt.
10:00Pratt.
10:04There he goes back.
10:05And it might come for Duncan.
10:06Oh, and Shilton saved it.
10:11A bad back fast there from Salmons.
10:13Very nearly allowed Duncan to go in.
10:15An attacker back.
10:17Really making trouble for his own defenders again.
10:19And Duncan coming back there.
10:21And Shilton saving.
10:22Take it out of here, you boys.
10:26Right, the starting ball.
10:32Robertson.
10:34Pijic.
10:37And Osgood.
10:38Not to get back comfortably there for Jennings.
10:40Heading by Blore.
10:53Straight to Neyver.
10:55But stopped by Pijic.
10:57In goes Neyla.
10:58Hudson.
10:59Oh, and that might come for Chilis.
11:00But Hudson will get it back.
11:04With the help of Salmons.
11:05This understanding between Young and Neyla.
11:19Jeff Salmons with the Stoke City throw.
11:25And he's found Greenoff.
11:26Moores.
11:32And a shot.
11:33Actively turned down by Jennings.
11:37Spurs have had the better of it.
11:38But Stoke have looked quite interesting in one or two breaks.
11:40And that was another of them.
11:41Good play again by Ian Moores.
11:43Shot well.
11:44A good left foot.
11:46And a good turnaround by Jennings.
11:49So a corner for Stoke.
11:50Corner curling in again.
12:05Fisted away.
12:06But only half got away.
12:08And it'll come for Mahoney.
12:10Lining it up.
12:11And it's a goal.
12:12And a good one.
12:12Well, that really has set Spurs back on their haunches.
12:24The corner, as it came floating in, was never successfully cleared.
12:27Only a half punch by Jennings.
12:29And then it eventually came out to Mahoney.
12:32Helped with the wind behind him.
12:33A tremendous drive into the roof of the Tottenham net.
12:36Spurs nil.
12:38Stoke City one.
12:39John Mahoney the score.
12:40And that, believe it or not, is his first goal of the season.
12:45And such an important one as well for Stoke City.
12:54Now Neighbour.
12:57At Shilton's.
13:02Some idea of how much it's gusting here.
13:06Right, really out straight there.
13:07And that's basically behind Stoke City.
13:10Massive kick by Jennings, even against the wind.
13:21And headed away only as far as Neighbour.
13:24Onto that left foot.
13:25And that's where he likes to get them.
13:27And a good save.
13:31Well, Neighbour can be devastating on that left foot.
13:33And the gap was there, and he hit it well.
13:36And Shilton parried it even better.
13:40Hudson.
13:41Pedrick.
13:44Pratt.
13:45In for Perriman.
13:46Now is this a chance for Spurs to break right on the interval?
13:49Duncan now to Chivers.
13:50Again, the feet were high, but it didn't matter because the whistle had gone.
13:57So a very good first half for Stoke City.
14:00They took quite a battering early on when Peter Shilton brought up a couple of saves.
14:03But then John Mahoney hit a blistering drive into the roof of the Spurs net to put the visitors into the lead at halftime.
14:13So halftime score then.
14:15At Whitehark Lane.
14:17Is Tottenham nil.
14:19Stoke City one.
14:20We'll be right back with the second half.
14:22So Spurs get the second half away.
14:35They've not won in their last five games, and they're this goal down now.
14:39It must become a fairly familiar feeling for them.
14:42But they've got the wind at their backs, and it's a fairly fierce one now.
14:45But must have been the most despiring feature of the whole afternoon for both sets of players.
14:49And here's Pratt with a shot.
14:51And it might come for Coates.
14:53It might still come for Coates, and it might come for Perryman, who was bustling in there.
15:00But in the end, it came for Shilton.
15:14Marsh.
15:15Moore's trying to chest it down for Greenoff, but it's dedicated to Perryman.
15:22Claims he was brought down by Hudson, but the referee said, I saw nothing.
15:26And Pratt finding Neva.
15:31A screaming shot and a beautiful save.
15:34Lovely piece of football there.
15:36As Neva, as Neva went on his way, hit a beautiful shot and a fine save there from Peter Shilton.
15:45Now Chulis, as Dodd misjudged that one.
15:49Swept wide again for Neva, coming in fast.
15:54But Bloor getting it away again for Moores.
15:57Willie Young putting that one in.
16:01Can Duncan do something here?
16:02Dodd was there.
16:06And Spurs will get a corner.
16:08And someone in the crowd will probably get a headache with the way that was whacked into touch by Mike Pridget.
16:15So a corner which Pratt will take.
16:17Willie Young up again.
16:18Cheers at the near post.
16:22Duncan right in front of Shilton.
16:24Hit low.
16:26And Hudson can put it behind again.
16:28And Pratt will get a second chance.
16:35But Mathewson taking an interesting position there behind the goal.
16:39And Willie Young right in there with a header.
16:41Duncan!
16:41Well, that corner came sailing in.
17:01Willie Young rose beautifully at the far post.
17:04And Duncan hooked that ball in.
17:07Twelve goals he scored now in the last ten games.
17:10Spurs one.
17:12Stoke one.
17:14John Duncan the slower and the equaliser.
17:22That's six minutes of the second ball gone.
17:25And a free kick for Tottenham.
17:38McAllister with a kick.
17:40Stoke claiming that Chivers was offside.
17:44And the lines went agreeing on the far side.
17:47What a remarkable goalscoring record John Duncan's had for Tottenham.
17:51He really has lifted them away from the gloom of the start of this season.
17:56And he got two last week at Coventry.
17:57And that's a very important goal he scored this afternoon now to make it 1-1.
18:02But an equaliser that Spurs deserved.
18:06And now here's Chivers as they hunt for a second goal.
18:09And now it comes for Perryman Cleons at the referee.
18:12Swept wide for Terry Naylor.
18:15A deflection and over the slope crossbar for a corner.
18:18Up comes Young.
18:24The man who caused the damage for the Spurs equaliser.
18:27Back comes Moores with him.
18:28Chiltern and Doyle are the Stoke players there.
18:39Duncan the man who has menaced Stoke in this early part of the second half.
18:43Number 10 for Tottenham.
18:44but it'll come towards Willie Young again
18:46and Shilton had to turn that over too
18:48and it's another corner
18:50well the big scot nearly got in there again
18:54with that head up
18:55and Shilton was under tremendous pressure
18:58to turn that over
18:58so another corner
19:02Jimmy Naber again with it
19:06and again Willie Young goes in
19:09and again the fist of Shilton
19:11turns it over
19:12but he was assaulted there by Willie Young
19:15and Young is arguing with the referee
19:17and makes his piece I think just in time
19:21the fist of Shilton getting up there
19:25to push that one away though
19:26and he's a goalkeeper under a lot of pressure
19:29at the moment
19:30Naylor
19:43Chivers up under this one
19:46but Dodd beat him in the air
19:48Pratt
19:48really fighting for it now
19:50Naber
19:51Naber going outside him
19:53but Naber turning it in towards Chivers
19:54there's a shot on a turn
19:56and in fact it hit Duncan
19:58Duncan again
19:59oh he's hit the crossbar
20:01and eventually
20:03it was Mahoney who got it away
20:05Chivers had a shot
20:09and it hit Duncan
20:10it came out to Duncan
20:11and he turned beautifully on it
20:14curled it over Shilton
20:15it hit the crossbar
20:16and Mahoney got it away for Stoke
20:19well a really brilliant start
20:26to the second half
20:27and I think a corner's been given
20:30the referee having a word
20:32with Alan Hudson about something
20:34what a look of strain on that face now
20:43as Spurs are really throwing everything at Stoke
20:47Coates turning it in
20:48Bloor gets it away
20:50and Robertson finally belting it away to Greenough
20:54Willie Young hearing back on the far side
20:58you can see
20:58because when Greenough's in possession
21:03Stoke
21:04are always in with the charts
21:06but now it's McAllister
21:08the long ball towards Duncan
21:10Pratt
21:17made for Naylor
21:19took it well
21:20there's the crossing again towards Martin Chivers
21:23but Dodd is there
21:24and he might still come
21:25Osgood's header
21:32Lionsman flagging on the far side
21:36offside against Tottenham
21:37and a free kick to Stoke
21:38not have much to do this half
21:46as Pat Jennings
21:47I wonder if he's feeling as cold as the rest of us
21:49in this biting wind
21:50it looks as though he might be
21:51well the pass didn't match his good intentions
21:58and McAllister colliding with a Stoke player as well
22:01but here's Robertson now
22:02and Robertson could have the beating of Willie Young
22:05this could be dangerous for Tottenham as Greenough
22:07goes rolling in there
22:09and in the end
22:10it's Naylor who got it away
22:12Moores was right in there too
22:14in fact it was Moores and not Greenough
22:17who got right in there
22:18Greenough
22:19down and injured
22:21after that collision
22:22at the other end of the field
22:23and then a bit of trouble
22:27Salmon's
22:30passing again
22:31Naylor's header
22:33Krak getting it away
22:34but not very far
22:35Marsh heading it back again
22:37Greenough
22:44well that fell for Coates
22:49and Duncan is onside
22:51now Marsh for Stoke
23:05Coates
23:09oh nasty for Duncan
23:15and here again
23:17and saved well by Schilden
23:18but if only Duncan had been on the target
23:22in the first instance
23:23when he was right through
23:25it might have had a different result
23:27he was there without really
23:28catching it properly
23:29on the second occasion
23:30after that pass from Coates
23:31McAllister
23:36hit hard towards Chivers
23:38got up well
23:40combined well with Duncan
23:41and his Chivers again
23:42hitting it well
23:44just over
23:45well he looked for all the world
23:54as though he was going to get that
23:55in lethal fashion
23:57on his right foot
23:57in the end he did
23:59and he was just too high
24:00and Coates will now go off
24:03and Chris Jones
24:10the young Channel Islander
24:12with six goals to his credit
24:14will come on
24:17here's McAllister
24:26now Chivers
24:28McAllister again
24:31planted forward first time
24:32towards Duncan
24:33oh and Pejic
24:34he might have given a chance there
24:35oh what a great piece of goalkeeping by Schilden
24:38Pejic's back pass
24:41was never going to reach the goalkeeper
24:42Pratt went in
24:43slightly hindered I think
24:45by a Stoke player
24:46but Schilden came out like a bullet
24:48Sermons
24:52had a quiet game
24:53brought down
24:56and that's the final whistle
24:59and Stoke have got a replay
25:02Schilden who made some excellent saves
25:04some really fine goalkeeping from him
25:06with John Duncan having scored the equaliser for Tottenham
25:10five minutes into the second half
25:12after John Mahoney the number four
25:14had put Stoke into the lead
25:15on the half hour
25:16a game that was spoiled to a certain extent
25:19by the high win
25:20but a good deal of excitement in it for all that
25:23Terry a full time scorer
25:24in his third round counter
25:26which means a replay at Stoke on Wednesday
25:28Spurs one
25:29Stoke one
25:30Stoke no doubt more pleased by that result than Spurs
25:34but let's get an instant reaction from the Spurs goal scorer
25:37John Duncan and manager Terry Neal
25:39as they made their way back to the dressing rooms
25:41can I just have your immediate reaction to the game
25:45well I thought
25:47we almost pressurised them into getting the winner near the end
25:50but we're by no means finished yet
25:52I'm sure we'll do well on Wednesday
25:54I think it's Wednesday the replay
25:55tell us a bit about your goal
25:57well I saw Willie Young was winning the header
25:59and I just followed it over
26:00and followed it around
26:01and I managed to get a good connection
26:02and it went in
26:04when you were in our studios yesterday watching Stoke play
26:07I heard you say that you're a lucky man
26:08but in fact you're a bit unlucky with the effort that hit the bar
26:10yeah but I don't complain
26:13you get your share
26:13I'm happy to get one
26:14I think really my immediate reaction is that
26:17it was a fine game
26:18keenly contested game
26:19and I look forward to that game on Wednesday
26:23we've been playing well away from home
26:24so
26:24but you didn't win
26:26where did it go wrong for you today really?
26:28I don't think it was a question of it going wrong
26:29I think the lads played very well
26:31considering the poor performances we've had at home
26:34Stoke are a good side
26:35difficult side to beat
26:36as we've found in the past
26:38basically
26:39as I say
26:40my immediate reaction is
26:42you know what a keenly contested cup tie it was
26:44and
26:45if it's something similar
26:47with the right result of course for us on Wednesday
26:48then
26:49I'll have no complaints
26:50why has it been difficult for you playing at home?
26:54I think we've been
26:54a little bit anxious to do very well
26:57the lads have probably worked a little bit too hard
27:00at it
27:00but today I was pleased that they showed a little more composure
27:03they played
27:04good positive football
27:06and I was reasonably happy
27:08our reporter there
27:10Martin Tyler
27:10mind you Stoke had battled well
27:12all through the game
27:13through a good deal of pressure as well
27:15and in John Mahoney
27:16they probably had the man of the match
27:17for the amazing amount of work that he got through
27:19as he always does
27:20and of course for his wonderful goal
27:22and in the Stoke dressing room
27:23I asked John Mahoney
27:24for his reaction to this Stoke City performance
27:27well I thought it was a workmanlike performance
27:30you know the conditions weren't really favourable for good football
27:34you know the wind was a swirling wind
27:35and the pitch was drying
27:38and I think it made it a bit difficult for both sides to control the ball
27:41Tony Waddington said you were confident of getting a result here today
27:45why were you particularly confident of that?
27:47well we played Spurs about five or six weeks ago
27:51and although they scored first
27:53you know we came back quite well
27:54and I know we could have stolen it at the end
27:57but although on the day a draw was fair
27:59you know we were quite confident
28:01of at least gaining a draw today
28:03they came for you a bit
28:05particularly in the second half today didn't they?
28:07they did yeah
28:07just after half time first 20 minutes
28:10it was a slight relief from African
28:12and I thought you know
28:15if we gave another goal away
28:17that could have been it
28:18but I thought we held on okay
28:20and then we started to break out
28:22and your first goal of the season?
28:26yeah
28:26it's long overdue
28:28you were helped a little bit with the wind behind you
28:31I mean it seemed to flash into the roof of that night
28:33I just must have hit it right
28:35you know I've been
