00:30Welcome again to The Big Match.
00:49Today, we've got a marvellous match as our main one.
00:51It's Arsenal against Manchester United.
00:53And whatever you do, don't miss the start of it,
00:55or indeed the finish of it either.
00:57We shall also be talking to the new Arsenal skipper, Alan Ball,
01:00and we shall back that game up with Championship Challengers
01:02Liverpool against Coventry City,
01:04and from the Second Division, Hull City against Portsmouth.
01:09And at the end of the programme,
01:10we shall be bringing you the result of that crucial match this afternoon in Cyprus
01:13that'll tell us whether or not England have qualified
01:16for the quarter-finals of the European Championship.
01:19But first we go off to Highbury,
01:20where in the past 24 hours they've had a distinct change for the better.
01:24Alan Ball has settled his differences with the club,
01:26he came off the transfer list,
01:27and minutes before these pictures were taken,
01:29he'd been made captain of the team again.
01:31And nobody is likely to rise to that challenge
01:33with greater pleasure than Alan Ball himself.
01:35So that then is the setting for Arsenal,
01:38who've lost their last three games against Manchester United,
01:41who begin the day in third place in the First Division.
01:44Let's take a check on the two teams.
01:45Arsenal without Eddie Kelly and Alex Cropley,
01:48and in their side, two former Manchester United men,
01:50goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer and striker Brian Kidd.
01:54As for Manchester United, they are unchanged yet again,
01:56with Stuart Pearson having recovered from a slight thigh strain
02:00that he received while training with England in Portugal.
02:02And also in the Manchester United side, of course,
02:05is Gordon Hill,
02:06his second game since he left Millwall ten days ago.
02:10And in goal for United, Irishman Paddy Roach,
02:12preferred by manager Tommy Doherty to Alex Stepney.
02:15The referee is Roger Kirkpatrick from Leicester,
02:17with linesman Mr. Druitt and Mr. Patton.
02:20And now the 40,000 crowd waits for the stop.
02:24So Arsenal kick-off in their red shirts with white sleeves
02:27attacking the girl to our right.
02:30Against Manchester United in their chain strip of white
02:32with black shorts,
02:34as the ball's floated in towards Stapleton
02:35and it'll come to Alan Ball!
02:37And Ball has scored!
02:40About 13 seconds no more,
02:42and Alan Ball crowns that moment when he was made captain
02:47a quarter of an hour before the start
02:49with a goal in 13 seconds.
02:53Arsenal 1, Manchester United nil
02:55as the ball came floating in from the left.
02:58Stapleton was right in there
03:00and it was only half clear to Ball
03:02and Ball made no mistake as he poked it wide of Roach.
03:06Arsenal 1, Manchester United nil.
03:09What a tremendous start!
03:10And exactly the start that Arsenal wanted.
03:14With something of a minor crisis developing here,
03:18they'd slipped to 17th in the table.
03:21They'd won only two of their last 14.
03:23They'd lost their last three.
03:25And here they are against high-riding Manchester United.
03:28A goal up in a matter of seconds.
03:30A free kick now to Manchester United.
03:31And now we should see what they are made of.
03:36Stuart Pearson,
03:37who was injured in training for England in Portugal
03:40and told me before the start
03:42he really wasn't finished down and injured again.
03:45Daly, nice touch there between Manchester United players,
03:47but Daly's touch just a little too firm for Greenhoff
03:51and a throw to Arsenal.
04:05Good long throw there.
04:09And the chance to practice it again.
04:12Another Arsenal throw.
04:13Semi-Nelson, number four.
04:27It's back with Powling.
04:30Played for Rice.
04:33And now played for Armstrong.
04:34Oh, that was a good piece of running by Storey.
04:40Look at the space there for Peter Storey.
04:43And that's a deep cross there towards Stapleton.
04:45Knocked back again.
04:47Oh, no!
04:52Well, Manchester United nearly conceded another one there.
04:55A beautiful piece of play by Storey
04:57and a deep cross by him.
04:59Stapleton managed to knock it back.
05:01And as Brady came in, he hit it down
05:03and it bounced up under the crossbar.
05:06And over the top.
05:12Pearson.
05:15Powling sticking tight.
05:17Looked like obstruction was obstruction
05:19and it's a free kick again for Manchester United.
05:21Stuart Houston, the big number three,
05:23coming up, as you saw there.
05:29So right in that Arsenal penalty area.
05:33Nelson got it away.
05:39Nickel.
05:42Koppel.
05:44Back to Greenoff.
05:46An offside against Pearson
05:47who hadn't come back quickly enough.
05:48Good refereeing decision there by Roger Kirkpatrick.
05:51Allowed the game to go on.
05:53Stapleton a nice touch.
05:54Ball, an even better one now.
05:56Finding Brian Kidd.
05:57Good moving here by Arsenal
05:58and Houston knocked it away.
06:01Kidd again.
06:05Now with Sammy Nelson.
06:10Well, it's not away yet.
06:11But Storey...
06:11Oh!
06:13It's a funny thing for the goalkeeper, Roach, to do.
06:15He was quite unmolested there.
06:17Could safely have caught it.
06:18And he's explaining now why he had to punch it.
06:26Oh, Brady.
06:27Liam Brady.
06:29A deep cross again.
06:30Once more towards Stapleton.
06:31He's winning some good balls in the air, Stapleton.
06:33But now here's Koppel.
06:41McIlroy.
06:44Three or four Manchester United players have gone up quickly
06:46and that was pushed away.
06:48And McIlroy almost got in the second one
06:49but that was a good punching save
06:51by Jimmy Rimmer.
06:56Now Kidd.
06:59McIlroy still injured.
07:02Collided with Powling.
07:04Arsenal taking it up again with Brady.
07:08Long and a beautiful pass there to Armstrong.
07:12And Arsenal really going well at the moment
07:14as Ball takes up a good position
07:15and hit first time by Kidd.
07:17But the quality of the move was there to see again.
07:22And the blood on the face of McIlroy
07:24is there to see as well.
07:26And David McCreary, the Manchester United substitute
07:28warming up as a precaution.
07:33Tommy Docherty now down on the
07:36tunnel area.
07:41So he's looking a little bit worried.
07:43Bobby Campbell, the Arsenal coach there as well.
07:46And Tommy Docherty saying to David McCreary
07:48it's time for you to go on.
08:07Nickle, Daly, Koppel, back for Jimmy Nickle again, he might get a shot in here, took a deflection, might come for Hill, he's not having much of a day so far Gordon Hill, ball, Rice, oh that might put it back into trouble and here's Hill again, free kick,
08:32and Alan Ball giving Pat Rice a bit of his mind, but not having got that ball away, played it back into the danger area, and the danger not over yet for Arsenal, as Houston now takes his free kick again,
08:51Driven, just over,
08:53Oh, that could have caught him by surprise, Jimmy River saying how many he wants in the wall, because Houston really caught that well, just a shade too high,
09:16free kick, foul on Stapleton by Nickle,
09:23Staple and Armstrong there for Arsenal, an indirect free kick,
09:43as Nelson floats in high towards Staple,
09:46and bliss
09:46Oh and they missed it completely, and Armstrong missed a chance, oh and it's it, it's the own goal, it's the own goal,
09:51Greenhoff finally put it over
09:53but without any doubt at all
09:57it was the fault of the
09:59Manchester United goalkeeper Paddy Roach
10:01so Paddy Roach
10:04was the man really to play
10:06was that long one came in
10:08he got underneath it, too far underneath it perhaps
10:10couldn't hold it
10:11Armstrong it seemed had the chance of an open goal
10:14and didn't hit it really well
10:15and in the end it was Greenhoff who had to turn it into the net
10:18Arsenal 2, Manchester United 0
10:23an own goal by
10:25Brian Greenhoff
10:26although in all honesty
10:27there wasn't very much that he could have done about it
10:30but certainly there was plenty that Roach could have done
10:33so that puts Manchester United
10:39in a lot of trouble now
10:41Buchan beating ball
10:47Macari
10:48must say London is a far from happy hunting ground for
10:52Manchester United
10:53they've been here to Queen's Park Rangers and lost this season
10:57they've been to West Ham and lost
10:58and now they're very much on the receiving end here at Highbury
11:01well Tommy Docherty was the man who picked
11:04Paddy Roach and he left Alex Stepney out about three or four games ago
11:08wondering if he's considering that decision now
11:11Rice
11:14having much the better of it
11:17Arsenal
11:17Nelson
11:19ball
11:21Rice
11:24Armstrong again
11:28Rice planning it forward towards Stapleton
11:34and a nice flick on by Stapleton there for George Armstrong
11:37good cross by him but it'll be a little too deep
11:40and Cothall will pick it up for Manchester United
11:43Story
11:47absolutely dominating it though
11:50Arsenal
11:50Manchester United scarcely with a look in it at the moment
11:54Nelson
11:58ball
11:59a 1-2 again for Sammy Nelson
12:01there's the cross coming in deep again towards Stapleton
12:05I think he took a packet in the face then too
12:08O'Leary
12:10still the pressure stays on Manchester United
12:13there's Armstrong
12:15knows he's got to hold it because Stapleton was in an offside position
12:19a little chip towards the near post there
12:21easy easy
12:22cry the crowd
12:23as Greenov has to give away a corner
12:25Brady with the cross
12:39deep towards Stapleton
12:40and it's his head that got it
12:42and again Roach was found wanting a little bit on that cross
12:48Terry Mancini there I'm sure you recognise him
12:55Brady
12:57and Greenov
13:03in his determination to get that one in a touch
13:05I think collided rather awkwardly there with Brian Kidd
13:09Tommy Kavanagh
13:14the Manchester United trainer
13:16used to be at Brentford
13:19I'm sure everybody there remembers him
13:20well that was a push on Pearson as well
13:26but Manchester United in possession
13:28it comes through to Hill
13:29can he make something of this
13:30Macari for Gordon Hill
13:31oh and he sliced it just wide
13:33the first real genuine attacking move
13:37we've seen from Manchester United
13:38Hill you could see was annoyed there
13:40but he played it beautifully with Macari
13:42found himself free
13:44and then hit it wide of that far post
13:46the goal then would have been
13:51just what Manchester United required
13:52to restore their spirit a little bit
13:55Rice for Arsenal
14:11Frank Stable it again
14:17oh he's turned well there
14:18and Buchan
14:19could only give it to Ball
14:21chipped in again towards Kidd
14:22and a fraction too high for him
14:24and Arsenal so much on top
14:25in spite of that scare at the other end
14:29with Gordon Hill
14:30they are looking so much the better side
14:31as the whistle goes for half time
14:352-0 to Arsenal in a lead
14:38they thoroughly deserve
14:39mind you they couldn't have got off
14:40to a better start
14:41with a goal
14:41in the first seconds of the game
14:43by number 7 Alan Paul
14:45their skipper
14:45and won by Brian Green
14:48off an own goal
14:49after goalkeeper Paddy Roach
14:50had failed to hold a cross
14:51that made it 2
14:53but a lead as I say
14:55that Arsenal dominating this game
14:57so thoroughly deserved
14:58we'll have to come back
15:00in a couple of minutes
15:00to see whether Manchester United
15:01can do anything about it
15:02in the second half
15:03the half time score then
15:04Arsenal 2
15:06Manchester United 0
15:07and we'll be right back with you
15:09so welcome back to
15:21Hivery Manchester United
15:22now attacking the goal
15:22to our right
15:23two goals down though
15:24but Brian Green off
15:26who was hobbling off the field
15:27at the half time interval
15:28is now back on the field
15:30and indeed back
15:31in a defensive position
15:32so that looks a little better
15:33for Manchester United
15:34but now here's Armstrong
15:37and indeed things have
15:38got to look a lot better
15:38for Manchester United
15:39if they're going to pick
15:40anything out of this game
15:41it's with Pat Rice
15:43and a goal kick
15:45for Manchester United
15:47Green off
15:59finding Steve Koppel
16:01the lad from Liverpool University
16:06Jerry Daly
16:10to Jimmy Nichol
16:12Daly again
16:15Pearson trying a glancing head
16:23of it
16:23Powling was behind him
16:24but it's a free throw
16:24to Manchester United
16:26Pearson
16:32Pearson
16:32Kopel
16:47Coel
16:48Coel
16:49Coel
16:50Coel
16:50Coel
16:52Coel
16:53Coel
16:53Coel
16:54Manchester United's corner.
17:03Houston up. Pearson there, nickel up.
17:07Macquarie, Daly, Hill.
17:12And McCreary right in there.
17:14They've left only three back as Koppel turns that one in and Houston
17:18got up higher than everybody by at least a couple of feet.
17:21But he was also more than a couple of feet wide.
17:29Cross comes in again towards Kidd.
17:33A little too high.
17:36Again, a lack of inches in that Manchester United defence
17:39very nearly costing them dear as Kidd got up for that one.
17:51Free kick.
18:01To Manchester United.
18:06Twelve minutes of the second half gone.
18:09Macquarie with it.
18:10Pearson's header.
18:11McCreary right in there.
18:12And O'Leary away.
18:15Houston trying to make something of it.
18:17Now, Rice and Ball between them can set up an Arsenal counter-thrust here.
18:25Here's Rice.
18:28Ball wanting it square.
18:29Armstrong's come up fast.
18:31Rice is delayed.
18:32Here's Ball.
18:33Played again there for Brady.
18:35Yes!
18:35No!
18:35Look for all the world like number three.
18:44Rice made a tremendous break down the right for Arsenal.
18:47Ball was there alive to it as well.
18:49And it came in for Brady and it looked as though he'd made it number three.
18:56Free kick to Manchester United.
18:58Green off.
19:07Houston.
19:10Gordon Hill.
19:11Manchester United.
19:21Manchester United.
19:21Manchester United.
19:22Manchester United.
19:23Manchester United.
19:26Macquarie battling away and finally winning it.
19:30Nickel coming up fast but he won't have much of a chance of getting that.
19:33And the throw given to Manchester United.
19:36Sammy Nelson not agreeing.
19:38Although the decision's been given.
19:40I don't know what he's playing at again.
19:46Koppel.
19:50Nickel.
19:53Well, this might come to something.
19:54Yes, it's there!
19:56And Pearson is the man who scored it.
20:05Well, that brings Manchester United right back in the game.
20:08Against all the odds.
20:12There really was only a half chance there.
20:14And Stuart Pearson.
20:17Was the man who whacked it home.
20:19High into the roof of the net.
20:22Arsenal 2.
20:23Manchester United 1.
20:24Stapleton.
20:24And...
20:24Nelson with the throw.
20:44Here's Kidd.
20:45Off couple for another Arsenal throw.
20:49Nelson with it.
20:50Oh, he's got that cross in well.
20:53Oh, he's got that cross in well.
20:58And Stapleton couldn't quite turn it in.
21:01Some tremendous work there by Kidd in a very confined space.
21:05Got a good cross in.
21:06And he eluded all those United defenders.
21:08And Stapleton couldn't quite get the header in.
21:10But were really accounted.
21:23Sammy Nelson with the free kick.
21:26Oh, what a bad one.
21:27Hit straight up, Koppel.
21:28Well, an argument as to which way that throw should go.
21:39Certainly as far as the crowd were concerned.
21:41But what matters was that linesmen and referees said Manchester United.
21:45Green off.
21:48Bucken.
21:50Nickel.
21:50Pearson tried a delicate little touch and it fell only for Brady and not for Daly.
22:00Armstrong.
22:04Through for Brady.
22:05What a good ball there for Pat Rice.
22:10Ball up there to support him, but Rice curling it in.
22:13Oh, and he was in terrible trouble then, was Roach.
22:16Rice curling that one in, always towards the far post.
22:23And it looked as though Roach had gone a little too much underneath it again.
22:27But in the end he hadn't.
22:34Storey.
22:36Kidd.
22:38Stapleton.
22:39And a free kick now at Manchester United.
23:03Kidd.
23:04Kidd.
23:07Ball.
23:09Armstrong.
23:16Everybody fighting for the ball.
23:19Ball again.
23:20Kidd trying to come away from Green off.
23:22And turning on him well.
23:24And hitting across.
23:25Oh!
23:26Deflection there from an own defender.
23:30That put it just wide of Roach.
23:33But also wide of the post.
23:34Oh!
23:34Oh!
23:34Oh!
23:35Oh!
23:35Oh!
23:35Oh!
23:36Oh!
23:36Oh!
23:37Oh!
23:37Oh!
23:38Oh!
23:38Oh!
23:39Oh!
23:40Oh!
23:41Oh!
23:41Oh!
23:42Oh!
23:42Oh!
23:43So another corner for Arsenal.
23:45Ball and Armstrong considering the possibilities.
23:47And Ball saying he wants Hill and Macari back ten yards.
23:54So Armstrong hitting this one towards Brady.
23:57Headed in first time.
23:58Stabledon was there but didn't really get off the ground.
23:59Pearson
24:02Heading it there for Makaru with that busy stride of his
24:05Arsenal coming back quickly
24:08And Brady just doing enough to stop them
24:12There's Nelson
24:14Well offside
24:29So Nicol with a kick
24:30Gailey
24:40Koppel
24:43Waited there for Makaru
24:50Hit again by Koppel
24:51Good looking break again by Manchester United
24:57Still this goal behind
24:58And they now have 16 minutes left in which to
25:02Make good that damage
25:04Heading and Pearson
25:10Tremendous battle on the pitch
25:18And there's a battle of voices on the terraces as well
25:21Great atmosphere
25:28Now Pearson
25:34Koppel
25:37Koppel
25:40Nicol
25:44On to the left foot
25:45Oh and a deflection that took it over
25:47Mind you it would have been very interesting to know what would have happened but for that deflection
25:51It looked as though it was screaming just under the crossbar
25:54When Nicol hit it deflected just over
25:58So a corner for Manchester United
26:01Who are now coming back hard at Arsenal
26:04Having been out of it for so long
26:07Koppel's corner
26:11Houston's header
26:12Houston's header
26:13Now ball
26:16To Kidd
26:18Yes went in just a little too crudely there
26:23Ball right up there
26:27Really has had a fine game
26:30Really involved all the time
26:32And there's ball again with a backward header just over
26:34But not much in it
26:36He's had a brilliant game
26:38A real captain's game
26:41He's been everywhere
26:43Having got his side on the right foot
26:45From the word go
26:46Heading that one backwards
26:49And just over the crossbar
26:50Daly
26:58And a throw
27:06To Manchester United
27:08Pearson
27:14Koppel
27:16Or will he get through
27:17Still Koppel
27:19Now this might open up Arsenal a little bit
27:21Here's Nicol
27:22Hit first time
27:25There's Pearson
27:26Snatched at it
27:28When he'd been played onside
27:29By that ricochet
27:30And put it well wide
27:35Now Armstrong
27:38Space up there for him
27:40And ball again supporting him
27:41There's Alan Ball
27:42There's the little cross coming in
27:45And it might come through
27:45They're very unsure of themselves at times
27:51In that Manchester United defence
27:52And Ball's delicate little chip
27:55Very nearly caught them out again
27:57Whether it's just that slight lack of confidence in the goalkeeper
28:06Who missed the cross for the second goal
28:10Although he's a Republic of Ireland international
28:12Has won seven caps Paddy Roach
28:14Good reputation
28:15And he almost had more work to do there
28:19As Ball went racing in at the near post
28:21And it was Gordon Hill who got it away
28:23Now Ball again
28:28Back heel this time for Armstrong
28:30Two of the old brigade there
28:32And Stapleton there
28:35And Roach dropped it at the last
28:37In fact he very nearly dropped it over the line
28:40As that cross came in
28:41Stapleton rose again so well as he'd been doing all afternoon
28:44And Roach nearly muffed it
28:47Kidd
28:49Now Brady
28:55Kidd again
29:00Stapleton outside him
29:01Kidd desperate for a goal
29:02Against his own club
29:03And he
29:04His own club
29:05And he very nearly found it there
29:06Ball again
29:20Armstrong
29:24Rice
29:27Armstrong again
29:29Ball
29:38Picking his way past one defender
29:40Then another
29:41There's the ball again
29:42He's played across once more
29:43Towards Stapleton
29:45And Roach could only push it behind
29:47For the corner
29:48We're in the last minute of the game
29:53Armstrong taking it
30:00Hit under that crossbar
30:09Oh and he pushed it in
30:10Well it's there for number three
30:14Whether it goes to Armstrong
30:17Or whether it was punched in by the goalkeeper Roach
30:20That's what the players themselves will have to decide
30:23I think Arsenal will want to give that to George Armstrong
30:26But there's no doubt at all as that corner came curling in
30:31That Paddy Roach
30:33That Paddy Roach
30:33Was at fault
30:35Arsenal 3
30:38Manchester United 1
30:40Score a George Armstrong
30:43And the final whistle is gone
30:45Arsenal began brilliantly with a goal in 15 seconds
30:51From Alan Ball the number seven
30:53And ended it brilliantly with one in the last 15 seconds from George Armstrong
30:57An own goal by Brian Greenhoff
31:01And Stuart Pearson the man
31:03Who scored the goal for Manchester United
31:06But a sad day for poor old Paddy Roach
31:12And another Irishman goes along there
31:14To pat him on the back
31:16Frank Stapleton
31:16But Arsenal clawing their way out of that minor crisis
31:21Halting that run of defeats
31:23With a win over high-flying Manchester United
31:26Which they thoroughly deserve
31:27A final scoreline then at Highbury
31:29Arsenal 3
31:30Manchester United 1
31:32Superb game of football
31:41And for the Arsenal of course
31:42An end to that worrying run of defeats
31:44And for that I think they have to thank
31:46In no small measure
31:47Their new skipper Alan Ball
31:48The man of the match
31:49Afterwards I began by asking Alan
31:51When he knew that he was to be made
31:53Arsenal skipper
31:54I was told to take the ball out
31:56That's the first time
31:57Bertie Mee mentioned it to me
31:58Why was that?
32:01Well it probably
32:02It was his final G-up
32:03Both to me and to the team
32:05And before I went out
32:07He says now you take them out
32:08You're a skipper
32:09Make them of it
32:10Get on with the game
32:12Drive them on
32:13And let's go
32:16Go out and win
32:16Did you need that sort of gym?
32:17Well it's
32:19You know
32:20After what's happened to me
32:21It's a nice thing
32:22To be recognised again
32:24And it just gives that tiny little lift
32:26Yeah
32:26You've settled all your differences
32:28At Highbury now
32:29Yeah I've had a complete change of heart
32:30Yeah
32:30And you'll finish your career here
32:33Do you think Alan?
32:33I hope so
32:34I hope so yes
32:35Well it was a marvellous start
32:37Tell us about that opening goal
32:38I think we tied it at something like 13 seconds
32:40Well they're the type of things
32:42That very very rarely happen to you
32:43And we've not practised anything like that
32:46I think they shut off both our wings
32:47Where we normally knock the ball to
32:48So Brian Kidd went forward a little bit
32:50He finally knocked it back to Sammy Nelson
32:52He played into the middle
32:53It was just an actual reaction of mine
32:55To just go and follow things on into the box
32:57And I shouted for Frankie Stapleton
32:59To knock it back
33:01And before I knew that it was
33:03On the old trusty left foot
33:04But for all that
33:05It was a day for the
33:06If I can put it this way
33:07The old stages
33:07I mean you having got in there
33:08And whack one in straight away
33:09And Georgie Armstrong back in the fold
33:11And right at the end
33:12He had a say in something as well
33:14Yeah
33:14Well we gave him the first goal as well
33:16George
33:16You got the two of them
33:17You gave him the first one?
33:18Yeah the first one
33:19We gave it to him
33:20He kicked it in the roof
33:22With a net green
33:22But it was over the line
33:24Oh the own goal one
33:25Yes
33:25And you've given that to George as well
33:27And he's pleased about that
33:29Delighted
33:29We ought to see if his delight is justified
33:32As we look again at those two goals
33:33Attributed to George Armstrong
33:35The first I must say to me
33:36Looked very much like an own goal
33:37By Brian Greenoff
33:38And I think when you look at it here
33:39You'll see that the ball was in no way
33:41Over the line
33:42When George Armstrong hit it
33:43Some bad goalkeeping there
33:44By poor Paddy Roche
33:45And in fact George doesn't do all that well here
33:48Only half hits it
33:48And now look
33:49It must be at least five yards out
33:51When Greenoff
33:52First takes it on his thigh
33:54Doesn't really control it very well
33:56And much as I would like to see that
33:58Given to George Armstrong
33:58I think that's got to go down
34:00As an own goal
34:01What about the second one though
34:03Right on the last whistle
34:05A delicate in swinging corner there
34:07From George Armstrong
34:08And again I think you'll find
34:09The whole of the ball
34:10Is not over the line
34:11When Paddy Roche
34:12Who had a real nightmare game
34:13Poor fella
34:13Knocks it into the back of the net
34:15I think there's a little more justification
34:17For giving that goal
34:18To George Armstrong
34:19But I think it's generosity gone mad
34:21If you give him the first one as well
34:24But if Arsenal want to do that
34:25Who am I to argue
34:26And you can't get a better little battler
34:28Than George Armstrong
34:29But while I was talking there
34:30To Alan Ball
34:31Our conversation turned to
34:32The sad state of England's international game
34:34And I asked him
34:35If he was as depressed about it
34:37As most people are
34:38Well yes and no
34:40I just want to be back in there
34:43That's all
34:43That's all I'm playing for really
34:45I'm playing with my club
34:46And I'm playing to get back
34:47In the England team
34:48Do you think that's a possibility now
34:49I've just got to keep playing
34:51And showing him that I'm still
34:52Good enough to play
34:53I think I am
34:54But how does it affect you
34:55When people say we're not good enough
34:56We're not skilful enough
34:57Well at the minute we're not
35:01Because we've been
35:04At the last two competitions
35:05We've not qualified for them
35:06Why is that Alan do you think
35:08Why aren't we skilful enough
35:10Because the players at the moment
35:14Aren't good enough
35:16I mean I've sat on an England bench
35:19With Bobby Moore
35:19Greedsy and myself subs
35:22We had an abundance of players
35:24Who could go and win games
35:25And world class players
35:27At that level
35:29We've lots of very very good
35:31Club players in the country
35:32But at the international level
35:34There's so many lacking
35:35They've got to have that little bit
35:36Of something in them
35:39To make them world class players
35:40And international class players
35:42And at the moment
35:43Unless the blend isn't there
35:45Unless the lads aren't there
35:46That are in the team at the moment
35:47There must be some others
35:48That are international players
35:50What would bring that back
35:51Do you think
35:51The skills of the game
35:52Well the skills are there
35:54But it's just the players
35:56I might seem to be contradicting myself
35:57At the moment
35:58But it's the players
35:59Who are not playing
36:00Who are not
36:01The bad lads
36:02If I can put it that way
36:04They're the ones
36:04Who've all got all the skill
36:05And thank goodness
36:06He's put balls in
36:08I think Hudson's got to be
36:09The next one
36:10Even Charlie George
36:11They can do something
36:12At international level
36:14Because they're skillful
36:15They're good players
36:16And they're world class players
36:17I think the only two
36:18Nearing world class
36:19In the England team
36:20Are BT and Todd
36:21Really?
36:22If they play them
36:22As double centre halves
36:24Do you regard yourself
36:25As a bad lad?
36:27Er
36:27I've been a little bit
36:28Out of order at times
36:29Always am in trouble
36:30But that's me
36:31I mean
36:32When you do things
36:33In the week
36:34And you're liable
36:35To get into bother
36:36And that
36:36You're liable to do
36:37Crazy things on a Saturday
36:38That's how you play
36:39If you're a nice person
36:40During the week
36:41You go about your work
36:42You do it
36:43Do it
36:43Do it
36:43You do the same things
36:44On Saturday
36:45There's not that spark there
36:47I'm always that way
36:48I want to be that way
36:49Arsenal skipper
36:51Alan Boar
36:51But now it's time
36:52For our second match
36:53On the programme
36:53And for this
36:54We pick up the unhappy season
36:55That Portsmouth are having
36:56They're stuck firmly
36:58At the bottom of the second division
36:59They've not won at home
36:59In the league
37:00And they've had only
37:01Won away win
37:02That's in 17 games
37:03At which point
37:03They went yesterday
37:04To Hull City
37:05The pictures come from
37:06Yorkshire television
37:07Commentator Keith Macklin
37:08Portsmouth are in the white shirts
37:10We pick up the game
37:11In the second half
37:11For just a couple of snatches
37:13Haig
37:14De Vries
37:17Lawler got that away
37:23Grimes back
37:24Wagstaff
37:25Greenwood
37:26And the panning
37:28Portsmouth defence
37:29Still gets it away
37:30Still gets it away
37:30Macken
37:32Mellows
37:33Wood
37:34Gibson
37:35Flicked on for Galvin
37:38With 13 minutes left to play
37:51The deadlock is broken
37:53And a beautiful move
37:55A lovely through ball
37:56Picked up by Galvin
37:57And
37:58Davey Gibson
38:00In that move
38:02As he's been so many
38:03But the scorer
38:04Chris Galvin
38:06Turning
38:06And a beautiful low
38:08Right foot shot
38:09Kyle back to Went
38:13Roberts
38:19Wheelan's coming for it
38:22The punch
38:23Reynolds picking up
38:25The backheader
38:25From Grimes
38:26Macken
38:29Kamara
38:30Kamara
38:31Oh and it got shot
38:33By Wheelan
38:34From Graeme
38:35It was almost 1-1
38:36As George Graeme
38:37Hit that
38:37Good diving reflex
38:39Save by Wheelan's
38:41Graeme
38:42Clipped that roll
38:43To Marinello
38:46Marinello
38:50Overrunning it
38:51Went
38:51Lawler
38:54Roberts
38:58Graeme's back
39:04Head of Reynolds
39:04He's onside
39:05In the box
39:05He's missed it
39:06Nobody on him
39:08He may not have known that
39:09That's why he snatched at it
39:11But he was absolutely unmarked
39:13Around the penalty spot
39:14That somehow sums up
39:15The season that poor old Portsmouth
39:17Are having
39:17Still of course rooted
39:18At the bottom of the second division
39:20And now we come to our third game
39:29And it's Liverpool against Coventry City
39:31At Anfield
39:32Liverpool going hard towards the top
39:34Yet again
39:34Granada's cameras were there
39:36To see them
39:36Commentator Gerald Sinstadt
39:38Liverpool are in the all dark strip
39:40Mortimer
39:43Neil
39:47Thompson
39:48Thompson
39:48Joey Jones
40:00Torshack
40:04Torshack
40:05Mortimer losing it to Callaghan
40:17Beautiful little chip from Callaghan to Case
40:25Highway in the middle
40:27Cross didn't reach him
40:28Got away by Holmes
40:29But Case will try again
40:31This time deeper
40:33And Neil coming
40:34Good hitter
40:34And Torshack
40:35Chase's deep cross
40:43Met by Phil Neil
40:45And the nod back across the goal
40:47Made it a formality
40:49For John Torshack
40:50Hughes
40:54Hutchison
40:57And now Hutchison has made himself some room
41:02Into the middle first time
41:04And a present by Hughes
41:05Great save by Clemens
41:07And a second time
41:08And Murphy there
41:09Missed the chance to put Coventry back on terms
41:13A mistake by Emlyn Hughes
41:15Murphy found himself with the ball at his feet
41:18Somehow or other Clemens got in the way
41:21And when it came back at him the second time
41:23He was able to grab that
41:25Murphy
41:28Chased back by Kennedy
41:32Somewhat delayed tumble by Murphy
41:39Really was the real thing
41:47And not the slow motion replay
41:48Holmes
41:52And the foul given against Cross
41:57On Thompson
42:00That was Brogan's header
42:19Hutchison
42:20Foul given
42:26Free sending Brogan back to his place
42:34And putting him in his place
42:36Free kick for Phil Neil
42:42Heading towards Torshack
42:48Turned in
42:49Case
42:51Hutchison
42:57Chased back by Case
42:59And Case makes a good tackle
43:00Mortimer
43:13Cross lofted towards Cross
43:20And Clemens is lost
43:21And it's in
43:23By Powell
43:24Clemens complaining that he was impeded
43:27But as the high cross came over
43:31Graham Cross went for it
43:33With Clemens
43:33Clemens didn't get hold of the ball firmly
43:36And Powell was there
43:38To hit it
43:38Not very hard
43:39Just inside the post
43:41Callaghan
43:44Thompson to Jones
43:52Callaghan
43:54And the pass to Highway
44:01Found Highway wanting it at his feet
44:04And it went two yards ahead of him
44:06Hutchison forced a double back for Powell's pass
44:22But still in possession
44:24Murphy couldn't take it on his chest
44:31But there's Coop here
44:32And Cross got to it
44:35With his
44:36Inside of his right foot
44:38And just put it past the post
44:40The ball
44:41Allowed to run on
44:43By Murphy to Coop
44:44And Coop's cross
44:46Well met
44:46By David Cross
44:48Here's Morton
45:04Still got Jones to beat
45:06Powell's back heel for Morton
45:10Straight up in the air
45:15Header away by Thompson
45:17But Murphy has it
45:19And he's got Brogan there to help him
45:21And Hutchison number 11
45:22Hutchison trying to lob Clemens
45:25Absolutely deliberate
45:28Poised himself
45:30Balanced and then just flicked it
45:32With his right foot
45:32And it had Clemens backpedalling
45:34To turn it over
45:35So Liverpool held to a draw
45:38Now it's time to bring you up to date
45:39With that vital European Championship match
45:41Being played in Cyprus this afternoon
45:42Between Cyprus and Czechoslovakia
45:44Because of course if Czechoslovakia win
45:45Then England out
45:47And I'm afraid the news is very bad news
45:49Because this is the final score
45:51Cyprus 0
45:51Czechoslovakia 3
45:53England out
45:54In fact the Czechs were 3 up at half time
45:56With goals by Nahoda
45:57Bichowski and Masny
45:59At times we were told it was like a practice game
46:01So Wales then are the only British side
46:03Now left in the quarter finals
46:05Of the European Championship
46:06A rather sad note for us to end on today
46:08But at least for Arsenal fans
46:10There's some consolation
46:11In the performance of their team yesterday
46:13And the return to the fold
46:14Of their skipper Alan Ball
46:16And his goal in 13 seconds
46:17Was surely the fastest televised goal
46:19Of the whole season
46:20And we were very delighted
46:22In the big match
46:23To be able to bring this particular goal
46:25To you
46:25So Arsenal kick off
46:27In their red shirts
46:28With white sleeves
46:28Attacking the goal to our right
46:30Against Manchester United
46:32In their chain strip of white
46:33With black shorts
46:34As the ball's floated in
46:36Towards Stapleton
46:36And it'll come to Alan Ball
46:38And Ball has scored
46:39About 30 seconds no more
46:43And Alan Ball crowns
46:46That moment when he was made captain
46:48A quarter of an hour before the start
46:50With a goal in 13 seconds
46:52Go to sensitivity
47:08Shenandoah
