00:30Welcome again to the big match.
00:50Today, a large slice of an eventful and wildly exciting afternoon at West Ham.
00:54The game against Manchester United held up for 20 minutes
00:57when a tightly packed crowd spilled onto the pitch
00:59and around it a match of classic proportions that you can't fail to enjoy today.
01:04Elsewhere, an astonishing mistake in injury time as Stoke City meet Newcastle United
01:08and a flare-up at Anfield when Liverpool come face-to-face with Derby County,
01:12all on the big match today.
01:14But first it's a way to Upton Park where West Ham shut the gates some half an hour
01:18before the start of their game against Manchester United
01:19and here are West Ham.
01:21What a week they've had, cramming in a 7,000-mile round trip to Russia for a cup-winner's cup tie
01:26and now with this clash against the First Division leaders, Manchester United.
01:30And as for Manchester United, with no mid-week game, they arrive rested and confident.
01:35They've won their last three games.
01:37They show few signs of allowing themselves to be dislodged as pacemakers.
01:41The atmosphere, the way it always is when Manchester United are around,
01:45it's almost possible to reach out and touch it.
01:47And close on, 39,000 are in this ground with many, many locked out.
01:52Let's first of all, though, take a check on the two teams for this vital First Division game.
01:56And a morning shock for West Ham.
01:58Skipper Billy Bonds has caught a stomach infection from Trevor Brookings,
02:01who missed that match in Russia, though Trevor is now fit for this one.
02:04They're already without Kevin Locke, so Keith Coleman is 6, Bobby Gould is 9 and Keith Robson is 11.
02:09Manchester United unchanged for the fifth successive game.
02:13Two men who'll hope to produce match-winning form, both in the England squad for Czechoslovakia.
02:17Trevor Brookings, as I say, now fit again after missing that Cup-winner's Cup tie in Russia.
02:22And for Manchester United, Stuart Pearson, surprised member of the England squad,
02:26but in really sharp form this season.
02:28Important few days, too, for West Ham keeper Mervyn Day, who gets married on Monday.
02:33The referee at Upton Park, Peter Reeves of Leicester.
02:35And now it's time for the action.
02:39So this big battle at the top of the First Division table gets underway.
02:43West Ham kicking off, they're in third place now, attacking the goal to our left.
02:47Claret Schertz, Blue Sleeves, Manchester United, the top team, in white.
02:52And the crowd have been savouring this for so long.
02:55There were long queues outside the ground early this morning,
02:58and by two o'clock, they were ringing the ground six deep.
03:05Bakari for Manchester United.
03:07Off the referee, but it falls for Daly.
03:09Bakari.
03:11Bakari.
03:13Manchester United with a good away record.
03:15They've won five out of eight away from home.
03:18They've won their last three games as well.
03:20People wondering how long they can stay on top, but all the time they have that sort of record,
03:28their confidence will be very high.
03:30They're going to be very difficult to dislodge.
03:33Now with Jimmy Nickel, one of the youngsters in the side from Belfast.
03:37Pearson trying to come away from McDowell and Pearson now.
03:41The bounce beat McDowell and Stuart Pearson putting it across the goal.
03:44And a good, calm clearance for West Ham there by Coleman.
03:48Good break though by Pearson, helped by that favourable bounce of the ball.
03:54Robson.
03:56Taylor.
03:59West Ham's throw.
04:02Skipper Frank Lampard.
04:03A little touch off for Pat Holland.
04:15Gould begging for the ball on the far side.
04:17Brookings has found a little bit of space there, but Buchan came across to fill it.
04:22But West Ham get the throw.
04:27Gould getting a run-up for this one.
04:31Robson there first.
04:33Holland going in.
04:36Tommy Taylor.
04:38Nice cushion header there for McDowell.
04:40Nice delicate skill there by Tommy Taylor.
04:43Coleman.
04:43Come on.
04:56Go on.
05:01Down a little bit there by Coppel's face, but then very skillfully finding Merlindale.
05:04Then very skillfully finding Mervin Day.
05:12Tremendous kick that Day has got, and Taylor is after it, and he might get there!
05:15Yes! And a Taylor! And they were caught out absolutely wide open!
05:22The simplest goal you can imagine, the most elementary mistake you can imagine,
05:28and it puts West Ham 1-0 in the lead with six minutes gone.
05:31A massive kick by Mervin Day.
05:35The United defence hesitated for a moment, and so too did Alex Stepney.
05:40Never for a moment though, Alan Taylor, and he was in there to head it over Stepney, 1-0.
05:49What a remarkable goal!
05:54And one that West Ham badly wanted, without the inspiration of Billy Bonds,
05:58with a 7,000-mile round-trip behind them this week to Russia.
06:02And people worrying, their fans worrying whether or not they will show a certain amount of tiredness.
06:07They've had a brilliant start.
06:09Seven minutes of uneventful football, except for one remarkable goal.
06:15That's twice at work for Keith Robson, and three West Ham players surging onto that one.
06:16Robson finding Holland, and now Brookings, letting it run well and pushed from behind, and a free-kick for West Ham.
06:20And the referee wouldn't allow that to stand, because the ball wasn't stationed.
06:252-3!
06:262-3!
06:271-3!
06:282-3!
06:291-1!
06:301-3!
06:312-3!
06:323-3!
06:333-3!
06:34That's twice at work for Keith Robson, and three West Ham players surging on to that one, Robson finding Holland and now Brooking, hitting it one well and pushed from behind and a free kick for West Ham.
06:47And the referee wouldn't allow that to stand because the ball wasn't stationary.
07:01Tommy Taylor then with the free kick for West Ham.
07:04Hit towards Bobby Gould, now here's Graham Padden, good advantage play there by the referee, although the linesman was flagging.
07:11Padden with the cross again, Gould with the header, and Taylor, no! Whipped away right at the very last by Tommy Jackson.
07:20Good defence there by Jackson, and it needed to be. Taylor was on it like a flash, after Graham Padden's very good cross.
07:29Now here's Coleman, there's another cross coming in, Holland with the header this time, Bobby Gould, linesman flagging.
07:36Just look where the linesman is, he's about five or six yards on the field to play.
07:41But his decision couldn't have been more positive.
07:45And now Nicoll.
07:46Copple.
07:47Oh, he's got past Lampard.
07:48Could be dangerous for West Ham now.
07:49And Daly couldn't quite measure up the shot.
07:50Nicoll can go.
07:51Oh, and Daly had to go diving down to get that one away.
07:58As the ball came out to him, Nicoll caught it so well left-footed, threw a crowd of players, and Daly saw it late, but still got a hand to it.
08:06So a corner for Manchester United.
08:07Curled in again, but Holland getting it to Robson.
08:08Jinked on there nicely for Taylor.
08:09Just look at this place.
08:10Oh, and Daly had to go diving down to get that one away.
08:11Oh, and Daly had to go diving down to get that one away.
08:12As the ball came out to him, Nicoll caught it so well left-footed, threw a crowd of players, and Daly saw it late, but still got a hand to it.
08:26So a corner for Manchester United.
08:29Curled in again, but Holland getting it to Robson.
08:32Jinked on there nicely for Taylor.
08:34Just look at this place.
08:37His skills let him down.
08:56Brian Green off.
08:59Lampard's header.
09:00Oh, Nicoll jumped well underneath that one, and was a little lucky.
09:04Padden though.
09:05And away goes Robson, but I think the ball will beat him to the bottom.
09:18Vakari.
09:26Daly.
09:29Koppel.
09:30Koppel.
09:36Caught that well, and so too did Daly.
09:38Thank you very much, so if it worked, go ahead and Peanut.
09:39Thank you very much.
09:43A Culver.
09:45Koppel.
09:46Daly.
09:50The pink visΓ£o, man.
09:53I'm sure it's all very exciting, because people have no directBERT moto.
09:56Cawthorne for Manchester United, attacking Lampard.
10:26And a corner.
10:35Stuart Hurston coming up and Bobby Gould going back with him, the short corner, a chance
10:38for Nickel to play in the early ball, which he did, and Brookings eased it away.
10:46Certainly pushed a lot of people forward, Manchester United.
10:51Pearson running over that one, oh, what a miss, by Buchan, or rather by McIlroy.
11:01Well, that was a remarkable miss as well, as that ball was hit beautifully, powerfully low
11:07across that West Ham goal mouth.
11:09McIlroy on the far side maybe caught wrong-footed a little bit, but certainly should have scored.
11:21Gainey's got past Lampard, Koppel's giving Lampard one or two problems here this afternoon,
11:25and a cross that's beautifully hit there, Padden heading it away, behind for the corner.
11:31Gain, Koppel got past Lampard, and that was a beautiful low cross that he hit,
11:37that in the end produced nothing as Padden heading it away.
11:41Corner hit low, McIlroy hitting it back again.
11:43Oh, and Daly couldn't quite get to it.
11:45Houston might.
11:47Off Brookings.
11:49And here's McDowell.
11:51And Houston again for Manchester United.
11:53Hit again, and Day had to grab that one, and still it's not away.
11:57Well, Day had to react very quickly there.
12:03Almost caught out by that shot from Stuart Houston.
12:11And here's Houston again.
12:13McIlroy, and Pearson almost got in.
12:19And West Ham at the moment under the wick.
12:21A corner for Manchester United.
12:27It must have been a West Ham defender as well as Pearson,
12:30who got a touch to that ball as it came in.
12:32And Tommy Jackson will take it.
12:35Martin Buckens up there, so too is Stuart Houston.
12:38Again the McIlroy header.
12:40And I think it will be taken again because Robson wasn't ten yards back.
12:44So West Ham rapidly organising themselves again,
12:53as Tommy Jackson prepares to take this corner for Manchester United.
12:58Houston going in.
12:59A good header away there by Holland,
13:00and he took the full assault of Stuart Houston.
13:06Brookings.
13:11Green off right with him.
13:12Brookings keeping it in.
13:15And now giving Green off one or two problems,
13:17and Green off had confidence enough to play it wide and cool.
13:21And back to Alex Stefano.
13:24Game really opening up now as Jackson takes it up.
13:28McIlroy.
13:29Jackson.
13:31Makkari.
13:32McIlroy.
13:34Still McIlroy.
13:35This could be very dangerous.
13:36McDowell is there.
13:37Holland is there.
13:38Makkari is there.
13:39And finally, somehow they get in the way of day.
13:44As Patton finds Holland.
13:46No one for Gould.
13:50Neckall.
13:54Now Pearson.
13:55Oh, he might come for Pearson.
13:56Oh, and he hit there and he knew nothing about it.
13:58Well, that fell beautifully for Pearson when he really, I think, didn't expect it to.
14:06And he hit it powerfully off balance and they knew nothing about it either.
14:10Hit his body and finally rebounded to safety.
14:16Here's Lampard for West Ham.
14:17And..
14:27Bad ball straight to Makkari.
14:29Pay forward for Sio Pearson.
14:30A touch off for Cobble.
14:32Now they're beginning to move a bit, Manchester United.
14:33Here's Pearson again.
14:36And he's got it across well and Day had to go down into post.
14:38in the post
14:43West Ham really being called around at the moment Pearson showing a good bit of
14:47speed there and a really devastating low shot that
14:50they took well at the near post
14:54well the law are out in force today they've got a view of the game now but
14:57they really had their hands full organizing the crowd before the game
15:02as the whistle goes for half time one goal separating the sides and what a
15:06remarkable one it was a two-touch goal from one end of the field to the other
15:10the kick by Mervyn Day and the header as Manchester United hesitated by the
15:14number seven Alan Taylor giving West Ham that valuable one goal
15:19lead at half time the question being really is just how tired they are after
15:23that excursion to Russia and how well they can hold out as
15:26Manchester United come hammering at them in the second half
15:29that we should find out but there's a lot more to come on the big match this
15:31afternoon the half-time score here at Upton Park
15:34reading West Ham one Manchester United nil we'll be right back with the second half
15:49and as we say welcome back to Upton Park with West Ham leading by one goal to nil
15:54Manchester United now attacking the goal to our left
15:58and if the last quarter of an hour the first half is anything to go by it they'll be hurling
16:02everything at West Ham now in this second 45 minutes to try and make good
16:07at remarkable laps in their defense that allowed West Ham to get in and get that
16:12one vital goal scored by Alan Taylor
16:13and set aside at the moment for Manchester United this is the fifth successive match where they've
16:29been unchanged now blocking taking it up for West Ham badly needing the impetus of another goal just in
16:36case their legs should get a little tired towards the end after that russian trip in midweek
16:45unceremoniously off the ball there and a free kick to West Ham
16:48and certainly the referee Peter Reeves has been on top of everything today
17:04so three West Ham players lining up there
17:06Tony Gould and Robson and Patton playing it there for Frank Lampard right foot goal pick
17:22there's Pearson certainly no tiredness there from him
17:33oh but McDowell did so well and Lampard might have given it away to Daly Makkari coming in fast
17:37Daly putting it on to Pearson onside good save
17:43West Ham furious there that there wasn't a whistle for offside
17:46and Day did remarkably well to get down and save that one
17:53Brookings turning it in towards Bobby Gould
17:55headed on and Stempley saved that one
18:00nice cross there by Brookings
18:02Gould in the right place and so too was Stempley
18:09Bobby Gould again
18:10Robson rookie
18:13oh what a good ball there by Brookings for Keith Robson
18:16Alan Taylor waiting in the middle there's a chip towards him and it was a fraction too high for him
18:21otherwise it was a sure goal
18:24what a lovely ball by Brookings superb pass and Robson's cross
18:30just a fraction of an inch too high for Alan Taylor
18:33green off
18:37Kane Lampard stopping it
18:40this is a good start to the second half of West Ham here's Taylor again he's gone past them all
18:44can he still get his shot and he can
18:46oh and Bakker didn't know what to do and Gould was almost in there
18:50oh and look at them now
18:51Bakker and Gould
18:53tumbling and kicking and elbows going in there
18:58when Gould seemed to have made a perfectly legitimate challenge for a ball that wasn't
19:02to by any means within the reach of the Manchester United goalkeeper
19:08and Gould and Bakker both being called
19:12to referee Peter Reeves
19:15Gould getting his word in
19:25moments when you wish you could lip read
19:27I think his first words were I saw what happened whatever you say
19:32and a shake of the hands and uh well that was a good end to it
19:37but I really believe that that was the right sort of
19:40unexpected challenge really by Bobby Gould the ball was loose there for a moment
19:45and I think he had every right to go for it
19:46so it's a free kick in the end though for Manchester United
20:01Makkari
20:03Daly
20:04Koppel
20:10linesman flagging about something over there
20:14referee overruled him
20:15Pearson
20:19and a corner
20:21for Manchester United
20:33there's the header by Daly
20:34Daly
20:35oh and McIlroy over the top
20:38well that corner by Koppel
20:41Daly got in well
20:43Makkari had a chance but it was too high
20:45well I think Ervin Day pointing there that one or two of the photographers are on the field there
20:54because there's quite a crush behind that goal
20:57and I think we're going to have some trouble there unless
21:00the police connect
21:02very quickly
21:04and Peter Reeves the referee is calling the players off the field
21:09and that is the only sensible thing that he can do
21:11so the players now coming back onto the field we've had a break of some 17 minutes or so
21:16West Ham are here Manchester United already back onto the field
21:19and if you've forgotten I'm sure you haven't
21:22West Ham won Manchester United is the score
21:24so the game
21:28the stoppage overall is very close to 20 minutes
21:31and Mervyn Day can restart it now with this goal kick
21:3435 minutes to to go
21:38Houston playing it for Nickel
21:44Lampard's header
21:51and now McIlroy
21:54back for Nickel
22:01and there's Holland
22:07a throw to Manchester United
22:10Pearson
22:12click back again for Koppel
22:19it's a free kick
22:21I think it was a push by Lampard on Koppel
22:24and the white shirts are in there in force now
22:29two, four, six, seven of them inside that West Ham penalty area
22:34the free kick comes over Houston is there with a header
22:36oh and it's there
22:37scored by Makkari
22:39well Koppel floated that in
22:48Houston jumped brilliantly
22:51and Makkari found the touch inside the six yard area
22:54past Mervyn Day
22:56West Ham one
22:58Manchester United one
23:01the scorer
23:02Lou Makkari
23:06goal number six of the season for him
23:11Makkari chasing him off that ball
23:14well played by Lou Makkari
23:16collision between two West Ham players
23:18Holland and Coleman
23:19and still Makkari finding Koppel
23:20a brilliant run by him
23:23played in for Daly
23:24hit first time
23:25now Pearson might chip it in again
23:27Makkari is across there
23:28so is Koppel
23:30corner
23:31lovely move by Manchester United
23:38always in with the chance of getting a free shot on goal
23:41no it was a goal kick in the end
23:44a marvellous piece of determined running
23:47and good skill by Lou Makkari
23:49Gould
23:51oh good bit of play by Bobby Gould
23:53finding Brookie
23:59what a good piece of play by Brookie as well
24:03Lampard playing it on for Pat
24:05free kick
24:08foul by Ryan Greenle
24:09now Patton for West Ham
24:18there's the cross coming in
24:20and Gould
24:21yes
24:21Bobby Gould
24:232-1
24:35well that came across
24:37got the left
24:38and was allowed to go a long long way
24:39through that six yard area
24:41the angle was so sharp for Bobby Gould
24:45and he caught it well
24:46through Stephanie
24:48back on the net
24:50West Ham 2
24:52Manchester United 1
24:55and the man the crowd have been getting at
24:57Bobby Gould
24:58is the man they're cheering now
25:06a really lovely shot from a very very sharp angle by Bobby Gould
25:12as the ball came over from the left
25:15and Gould did so well
25:19and away goes Koppel
25:22Lampard's right there with him
25:23he knows he damn let him have a yard
25:25but here's Makkari
25:27oh a yard wide
25:33well Koppel has been trouble all the afternoon for West Ham
25:35and he got that cross in well
25:36Makkari coming up fast on the blind side
25:40heading at a yard wide
25:46Holland
25:47took that nicely on his chest
25:49here's Bobby Gould again
25:50turned in once more towards Robson
25:52too high for him
25:53will Brookings make something of it
25:57the yard or so for the cross
25:59and Houston with the header away
26:01Lampard
26:03oh and there's Gould with a chance for number two
26:06and he feels it
26:11well somehow behind that
26:13line of Manchester United back defenders
26:15and Gould thought for a moment about playing it with his feet
26:18and decided to try a header
26:20badly missed Koppel
26:22Nichol
26:25Pearson
26:28Lampard
26:29and he fouled Pearson as he did so
26:31it's a free kick to Manchester United
26:35Jimmy Nichol with the free kick for Manchester United
26:51a bit lower this time
26:53Tommy Jackson getting a foot to it
26:55Makkari treading over the ball
26:56and Patton getting it away to Bobby Gould
26:58and Gould is on his way
27:00Alan Taylor's gone roaring through
27:01but he's in danger of being offside
27:03Gould still going on his way
27:05played there for Brookings
27:06and hit wide
27:07well a great run by Gould but a brilliant run too
27:13by Alan Taylor taking defenders with him
27:16and in the end
27:18and in the end Brookings put it wide
27:20and there's a substitution now
27:23Jerry Dane is coming off
27:25and David McCreary goes on
27:28David McCreary is number 12 for Manchester United
27:30going up straight away into a strong attacking position
27:42without their skipper Billy Bonds
27:43without Kevin Locke as well
27:45McDowell
27:45Padden
27:48oh and he's lost this to Koppel
27:50Koppel finding Pearson
27:51and it's still not away yet
27:52Makkari right there
27:53just across the goal
27:55and behind
27:55goal kick
27:56could not have been closer there for West Ham
28:02as that skirmishing in the six yard area
28:05I think there may have been an infringement
28:09Alan Taylor
28:12and it's all over
28:18and West Ham
28:20have beaten the league leaders
28:22with a goal
28:22by Bobby Gould
28:24and Alan Taylor has scored the first run
28:29Irving Day goes off
28:31the man who gets married on Monday
28:32having brought up one or two brilliant saves
28:35so he'll have a day that he can remember
28:37and it indeed will
28:39the referee Peter Reeves
28:41who had that difficult crowd situation to happen
28:43and he handled it well
28:44and did the only thing that he could have done
28:45by taking the players off
28:47for some 20 minutes
28:48so a very eventful afternoon
28:50and a very important win for West Ham
28:52goals by Taylor
28:54and by Gould
28:55replying
28:56from one by Makkari
28:58for Manchester United
29:00so a final score
29:01Abton Park
29:02is West Ham 2
29:04Manchester United 1
29:06superb game
29:16and a credit to West Ham
29:17who kept going so well
29:18after all their exhausting travels
29:20of the past few days
29:21and of course
29:22to Manchester United as well
29:23they came
29:24and they attacked
29:25in a most exhilarating way
29:26and even those crowd scenes
29:28couldn't entirely spoil the day
29:29and today our papers
29:31are given that incident
29:31full coverage
29:32and West Ham will investigate
29:34the whole incident
29:34during this coming week
29:36I think it's important though
29:37to get the whole thing in perspective
29:38and one piece of evidence
29:40that is available to West Ham
29:41is that an outside door
29:43in that troubled area
29:44was open from the inside
29:45just after half time
29:46and a gate man saw it
29:47then pushed off its hinges
29:48by a couple of hundred fans
29:50who'd been locked out
29:51from the start
29:51and their pressure in that area
29:52added to the problems
29:53and as you'll see now
29:55from our little diagram here
29:56that's the door
29:57where they came in
29:58after being broken down
29:59and that was the tight little area
30:00where all the pressure was
30:01and the congestion
30:02must have forced those people
30:03over onto the pitch
30:04it was an overspill
30:05there had of course
30:07been fights earlier
30:07in the afternoon
30:08and I'm sure that they
30:09were a factor in the whole thing
30:11but in fairness to Manchester United
30:12I must stress
30:14that there were none
30:14immediately before
30:15this frightening incident
30:16it was a case
30:17of people spilling onto the pitch
30:19for the sake of their own safety
30:20even so
30:21an investigation is essential
30:23it needs to be a thorough one
30:24I'm sure it will be
30:25and of course
30:26our pictures on the programme today
30:27will be available to West Ham
30:29if they want them
30:29now the game itself
30:31and a word now
30:32from the man who scored that winner
30:34Bobby Gould of West Ham
30:35but first I asked him
30:37what the referee had said
30:37to the players
30:38when he took them
30:39off the field of play
30:40I never actually spoke to the referee
30:42but I think he told John Lyle
30:43and Tommy Doherty
30:44that he was going to give it 10 minutes
30:45see what the situation was
30:47and then we'd just play it by ear
30:49and what was going on
30:50when you went into the dressing room
30:51well we were sitting down
30:52we were trying to get another cup of tea
30:53but we eventually got one
30:55without any milk in this time
30:56you couldn't get any milk
30:57we've been used to that in Russia
30:58mind you but
30:58we'll talk about Russia in a minute
31:00let's talk first of all about your goal
31:01yes
31:03I'm surprised it got as far
31:05as you
31:06right across that
31:07six yard area
31:07it seemed to go a long way
31:09it did
31:09I think Sammy McIlroy
31:10had one in the first half
31:11very similar
31:11but the opposite way round
31:13I just happened to get on the end of Graham's
31:15tremendous cross
31:15really hammered it
31:16and I just managed to steer it in
31:18I don't know which side it went
31:19of Alex Stepney
31:20but it went the right side
31:21and you seem to be aware
31:22that there was a camera there as well
31:24I've been getting some terrible stick
31:25in the dressing room Brian
31:26I've been out of the side for a long time
31:29I've worked very hard while I've been injured
31:31and to score a goal against Manchester United
31:33well I enjoyed it
31:34and I hope everybody else did anyway
31:36I think the West Ham fans
31:37what sort of stick were you getting in the dressing room then
31:39well early Gregory told me that
31:41when I went down on my knees
31:43he said you hadn't got any energy to get up
31:44and I think that was quite true as well
31:45well you've had a busy week anyhow
31:47but I think you were saying just a moment ago
31:48before we started this
31:49that you owed West Ham something
31:51because the Manchester United equaliser
31:53in fact was in a way down to you
31:56not marking Stuart Houston properly
31:58yes correct
31:58I should have been picking Stuart up
32:00didn't reach it
32:01no balls reached him in the first half
32:03but in the second half
32:03that one just after half time
32:05well at the second interval
32:06and I was caught napping
32:08was the fact that there had been
32:10that 20 minute delay
32:11did your concentration go because of that
32:12do you think
32:13I don't know Brian
32:15it perhaps could have affected me in that way
32:17but I didn't get with him
32:18he got the yard
32:18got the header on
32:19and I think Lou McCurry was in there
32:20just to get the final touch
32:21but if you were caught napping there
32:24they were certainly caught napping early on
32:25I mean I don't think I've seen
32:27a more remarkable goal than that all season
32:29no I think Alan Taylor was exceptionally brave
32:31he went through two people
32:32and towards with Alex Stepney coming out
32:34tremendous goal
32:35you know fantastic goal scorer
32:37this young boy
32:37tremendous potential
32:38what about you
32:40do you feel
32:40I mean obviously you're not happy
32:41being in and out of the side
32:42and occasionally getting in
32:44on the rest of it
32:45but exactly how do you feel
32:47about West Ham and the situation
32:48I've been at six clubs now
32:49and this is a fantastic club
32:51there's a lovely atmosphere
32:52everybody wants to do well
32:53I was at Arsenal
32:54just before they started
32:55the league double and everything
32:57in court final
32:58and I think they've got
32:59a better side here
33:01and I'm just happy
33:02to be involved in it
33:03very very happy
33:04in what way better
33:05Bobby do you think
33:06I think at Arsenal
33:07we were a little bit stereotyped
33:09but here we've got so much potential
33:10you look at the two players
33:11that didn't play today
33:12Bonds, Jennings, Locke
33:14Best even
33:16you know it's an unbelievable
33:17pool that we've got
33:18and I think we can go
33:19a long long way
33:20and you're quite happy
33:21to go on battling
33:22for that place
33:22even though you don't
33:23very often get one
33:24I wouldn't say that Brian
33:26I've been very fortunate
33:27I've got a cup final medal
33:29I'm very very happy
33:30here
33:31very happy indeed
33:32tell us about Russia now
33:33because everybody expected
33:34you to be so tired
33:35after that
33:36and yet in fact
33:37in the second half
33:37you look probably better
33:38than you did in the first
33:39yes I think first half
33:40I personally felt
33:41a lot more tired
33:41in the first half
33:42perhaps it's just coming
33:43back into the side again
33:44and feeling my feet
33:44but in the second half
33:46John tied us down
33:47a little bit more
33:47and we played more
33:48to the pattern
33:49we wanted to
33:49and I think it showed
33:51and so you know
33:53we just went from strength
33:53to strength in the end
33:54we've seen a few
33:55fleeting glimpses
33:56of that Mervyn Day
33:57mishap out in Ararat
33:58Yerevan
33:59what was a player's view
33:59of that?
34:01Perfectly honest
34:01I definitely think
34:02it was a foul
34:03Mervyn had the ball
34:03in his hands
34:04and as far as we're concerned
34:05it was headed out
34:06of his hands
34:07and therefore
34:07I was personally involved
34:09with the referee at the time
34:10because we were having
34:10a little chat
34:11because he could speak
34:12quite good English
34:13and I don't think
34:14he'd even seen the ball
34:15knocked out of his hands
34:16to be very honest
34:17and he would have been
34:19a very brave man
34:19to disallow it
34:20with 70,000 Russian
34:21shouting at him
34:211-1 going to the second leg
34:23confident?
34:25It'll be a very
34:26very difficult game
34:26I saw one of the best players
34:28I've ever seen in my life
34:29and that was their number 6
34:30don't ask me to pronounce his name
34:31but he's quite a player
34:33fantastic out there
34:34and I think
34:35we'll have to shut him down
34:36Patsy Holland did
34:37a tremendous job
34:37on him out there
34:38and if we can shut him down again
34:40I think we'll go
34:40a great chance
34:41Thank you for your goal
34:42and for the pictures afterwards
34:43I think we might see those again
34:44a few times
34:45The lads were on about
34:46the diving header
34:47but please don't show that
34:49for my sake
34:49I'll get some more stick for that
34:51And that's a deal
34:52we won't show it again
34:53because what we turn to next
34:54is a match
34:55with a crazy finishing touch to it
34:57it's just a couple of glimpses
34:58in fact
34:59of Stoke City's game yesterday
35:00against Newcastle United
35:01Watch out then
35:02as the pictures come from ATV
35:04the commentators Hugh Johns
35:05with Stoke City in the stripes
35:07Greenoff knocking it back well
35:11for Haslegrave now
35:13Mahoney
35:13tried the backflick
35:17but it didn't come off
35:18Blore
35:20now Pacek
35:24Sammons
35:26Blore stays up in the attack
35:29comes for Haslegrave
35:31on the grave again
35:35too high for Moores
35:37the shot from Mahoney
35:38missed kick
35:39Marsh now
35:40far post
35:44Greenoff
35:45oh that a magnificent save
35:48from Mahoney
35:50ball going across from Marsh
35:54Greenoff getting
35:56a good hit to it
35:57Mahoney under tremendous pressure
35:59from Moores
36:00from Moores and Blore
36:03and a fabulous save
36:05over the bar for the corner
36:06Sammons then
36:08with the corner
36:09Moores couldn't get there
36:11and
36:12Greenoff has
36:13so it finally paid off
36:18all the pressure
36:18Newcastle Stunt
36:21Jimmy Greenoff gets his goal
36:27right on the 15th minute
36:30of the second half
36:31well time up on our watches
36:35it looks very much as though
36:36Newcastle have lost
36:37seven out of eight away
36:39this season
36:40as Mcdonald takes it
36:45as Mcdonald takes it
36:45no Mahoney gets there
36:47Hasselgrave is in
36:48Newcastle chasing in here
36:50with Gowling
36:51and
36:51Schulten has lost it
36:52here's the equaliser
36:53there it is
36:55oh what a terrible tragedy
36:57it's 1-1
36:58we're 30 seconds into injury time
37:02and Stunt
37:04have been absolutely stunned
37:06by that
37:07equalising goal
37:08Newcastle can hardly believe it themselves
37:11that long ball through
37:13the missed tackle
37:15leaving Gowling
37:17to advance on his own
37:18Schulten coming
37:19fully 30 yards
37:21off his line
37:22to kick clear
37:23miss his kick
37:24and Gowling
37:25then had nothing
37:26but an empty net
37:27to steer the ball into
37:28well that surely
37:30has got to be
37:31the most dramatic equaliser
37:32that we've had
37:33this season
37:41our third game today
37:43involves two of
37:44England's successful
37:46European clubs
37:47over the past week
37:48Liverpool
37:49who won in Spain
37:50this week
37:50now meeting
37:51Derby County
37:52who had that
37:52sparkling victory
37:53over Real Madrid
37:54so Anfield is our
37:56next stop for a game
37:57with a lot of prestige
37:57to it
37:58and with a nasty
37:59flare-up towards the end
38:00Granada's cameras
38:01were there
38:02the commentators
38:02Gerald Sindstadt
38:03Liverpool are in
38:04the all-dark strip
38:06Phil Neill to take it
38:09Keegan
38:12handball by Newton
38:14involuntary
38:16Keegan's head yet again
38:27and Tosak on the turn
38:28Keegan's head
38:37does the trick
38:38the long ball
38:40finds him
38:40he flicks it off
38:42and Tosak
38:43pivots and hits it
38:44with his left foot
38:45quarter of an hour
38:52into the second half
38:531-0 still to Liverpool
38:54Derby bringing on
38:57Davis
38:58to see if he can
39:00produce something
39:01more up front
39:02Gemmell away
39:07Charlie George
39:08down injured
39:08technically offside
39:14Lee still going on
39:16and putting it in the net
39:18referee has allowed the goal
39:21Charlie George
39:23technically in an offside position
39:25but couldn't be interpreted
39:27as interfering with play
39:29the ball knocked through
39:30chased by Lee
39:31and in the most economical
39:33of movements
39:34tucked into the net
39:35Gemmell to George
39:44on for Davis
39:45Davis brought down
39:47by Thompson
39:48right on the edge
39:50of the area
39:51penalty
39:54says George
39:55free kicks
39:56as the referee
39:57now I would have thought
39:59that that was probably
40:00either outside
40:02or just on the line
40:04and that was a timely
40:05intervention
40:06by Francis Lee
40:07it was also
40:10a timely tackle
40:11by Phil Thompson
40:13but whether it was
40:14entirely commendable
40:15is another matter
40:16altogether
40:17it looked very much
40:19as though he was beaten
40:20and that was what
40:24professionals call
40:26a professional foul
40:27five men in the firing line
40:31and a lot of big kickers
40:35on the derby side
40:37but it looks as though
40:38the man we might expect
40:39to see
40:40is Charlie George
40:41Clements
40:42looking for a view
40:44Rio is replacing the ball
40:47but he can kick it
40:49as hard as George
40:50and it might well
40:51be either of them
40:52it's Rio
40:53charged down
40:55by Cormac
40:56and there's a fight
40:58breaking out
40:59referee getting in
41:00amongst them
41:01and really
41:02what is this all about
41:03well it's calmed down
41:09as soon as it's begun
41:10but what a disgraceful scene
41:12the linesman
41:13has spotted something
41:14and he's talking
41:15to the referee
41:15ferment on the cop
41:19but Mr Bailey
41:22the linesman
41:22from Stockport
41:23on the near side
41:24spotted an incident
41:26and is calling them
41:27back for a free kick
41:28I think to Liverpool
41:29and whatever it was
41:39no further action
41:40I certainly didn't see
41:42what started it
41:42but suddenly everybody
41:44was in
41:45Thompson
41:55back pass
41:58Davies
41:58down he goes
41:59no penalty
42:00the derby players
42:05clustering round
42:06Mr Styles
42:06and they'll do well
42:09to stay out of it
42:10now
42:10McFarlane sending
42:11Todd away
42:11and Todd is going
42:12to be booked
42:13McFarlane curious
42:15because Todd then
42:16must surely have
42:18sworn at the referee
42:18that was why McFarlane
42:21was so angry
42:22very very tricky
42:34situation there
42:35for Mr Styles
42:36he must have been
42:37under a lot of pressure
42:38there and I think
42:39he made the right
42:39decision
42:40having just turned
42:43down a penalty
42:43appeal I think
42:44rightly because
42:45the incident was
42:46committed just
42:47outside the box
42:47when Thompson
42:48tripped Davies
42:49Davies again
42:50was through
42:51and was brought
42:52down in the box
42:53but in my view
42:55that wasn't a penalty
42:56either
42:56but the two incidents
42:57so close together
42:58in a game which
42:59has suddenly become
43:00explosive
43:01making a situation
43:03which makes you feel
43:05a good deal of
43:05sympathy for referees
43:06well it finished
43:081-1
43:09but what about
43:10those Derby County
43:10penalty appeals
43:11that also had
43:12the knock-on effect
43:13of Colin Todd
43:14getting his name
43:15in the referee's book
43:16both of the incidents
43:17of course involve
43:18Roger Davies
43:18and here's the first
43:19one coming up now
43:20as Davies takes this
43:21ball he was onside
43:22a nicely timed run
43:23in fact
43:23Phil Thompson is
43:24after him
43:25but look he makes
43:26contact with Davies
43:26outside the area
43:28and although Roger Davies
43:29falls inside the box
43:30that doesn't matter
43:31the incident occurred
43:33outside the area
43:34and the referee
43:35Keith Stiles
43:35absolutely right
43:36not to give a penalty
43:37to give a free kick
43:38I'm not quite so sure
43:40about this second one
43:41though
43:41what a poor back pass
43:42that was there
43:43and Davies quickly onto it
43:44Ray Clements
43:44out of his goal
43:45but watch Clements
43:46and Davies' right leg
43:47there
43:48look to me as though
43:50he might just have
43:51got a touch on Davies'
43:52leg there
43:52and it looks suspiciously
43:53like a penalty to me
43:55Davies there
43:57can't believe he hasn't
43:58got one
43:58but like a blooming
43:59good sportsman
44:00he gets up and says
44:01to Ray Clements
44:01well you've got away
44:02with that one
44:02so there we are
44:04Derby perhaps a little
44:05bit unlucky
44:05some news from the
44:06England camp this morning
44:07remembering of course
44:07that vital match
44:08against Czechoslovakia
44:09in Bratislava on Wednesday
44:10that David Johnson's
