00:00To be continued...
00:30Welcome again to the big match, and three more matches for you today.
00:51Our line-up is West Ham against Everton, that's our main match,
00:54and we shall back that up with Coventry against Burnley,
00:56with the winner coming in injury time there,
00:58and Newcastle against Tottenham, the best comeback possibly of the whole day.
01:02Our guest today in the studio, Frank Lampard, the West Ham defender,
01:06but first we go across to West Ham, to Upton Park,
01:09for the first division game between West Ham and Everton.
01:11And it's West Ham who are out first, they've played in the European Cup in this cup this week against a Finnish side.
01:16They won, but they haven't been in their best form over the past two or three games,
01:18and they'll be hoping to snap back on form today against a side that's also been in Europe this week,
01:23Everton, led out by Roger Kenyon, who went out of the UFA Cup to AC Milan on a controversial penalty.
01:29I wonder if there'll be any reaction from that,
01:31but at least Everton have a good record here for matches between West Ham and Everton.
01:36They've won four times on their last eight visits,
01:38and these then are the two teams for this first division match today.
01:42And West Ham, in fact, has sprung something of a surprise.
01:45Alan Taylor, their cup final hero, is only the sub.
01:47Keith Robson gets the number seven shirt.
01:49Clyde Best comes in at nine.
01:51As for Everton, defender Mick Bernard is injured, but they have reserve strength in depth,
01:55and although they've got a reputation for being big spenders,
01:58six of this side began as Everton apprentices.
02:00Well, a good number of those players will be on trial today,
02:03because about to take his seat in the stand is the England manager Don Reavy.
02:07And you can only guess that the players who will interest him in particular.
02:09My feeling is that Frank Lampard, the West Ham full-back, could well be one of them.
02:14And there have been good reports lately, too, of the Everton defender Mick Lyons.
02:17Now we come to the toss-up between the skippers, Roger Kenyon of Everton and Billy Bonds of West Ham.
02:21The referee there, incidentally, is Tom Reynolds from Wales,
02:24who last weekend he was refereeing a European match in faraway Iceland.
02:29Conditions a little more moderate today for him,
02:31and indeed for the 31,000 crowd, who are now waiting for the game to get underway.
02:35And it's Everton who kick off in a chain strip of light tangerine shirts,
02:43blue shorts, attacking the goal to our right.
02:45West Ham, as usual, of course, in their claret and blue shirts, white shorts,
02:49and an infringement there in the opening seconds of the game.
02:52Steve Sargent, the man who was injured,
02:54in a collision there with Clyde Best.
02:56First, painful knock on the knee.
03:00And referee Tom Reynolds bringing the game back for a free kick to Everton.
03:05That in the first ten seconds of the game.
03:08The ball back with Big Dye Davis, the Welsh international goalkeeper.
03:11An unfair challenge there by Gary Jones on Graham Padden.
03:19Free kick to West Ham.
03:24Graham Padden, who scored a brilliant winning goal last week against Wolverhampton.
03:30Here's Padden again.
03:32A West Ham throw.
03:37Best.
03:38Having a tussle there with Kenyon.
03:40Keith Robson.
03:41And another West Ham throw.
03:46Everybody expecting Everton to play a strong defensive game here today.
03:49And at the moment they're being forced back onto defence.
03:53Padden with the throw for West Ham.
03:55Little effort, but kind of a good one-throw.
03:57And was in a push on Best.
03:59The crowd howling all around, but...
04:02Tom Reynolds saying no.
04:04Kenyon getting it away.
04:05Lyons only half getting it away.
04:06Lampard now.
04:07A thundering shot for straight into the arms of Dye Davis.
04:10Competing very well in defence in the middle of the field for everything at the moment, Everton.
04:19And here's Dobson now for Jones.
04:21Lyons made a run on the outside for him.
04:23Latchford's on the far side and got up very well indeed.
04:25And Telfer almost got there.
04:26And in the end, Kevin Locke had to turn that away for a corner.
04:30A very good jump on the far side by Big Bob Latchford.
04:34Telfer almost made it and a very quick and effective interception by Locke.
04:38So, Roger Kenyon coming up again.
04:41Another corner for Everton.
04:43Lyons is up there too.
04:46And just skidded off the head of Clyde Best.
04:49And Keith Robson keeps it in play.
04:51Padden's made a run down the left.
04:53A good ball by Robson.
04:54Padden in full flight.
04:55Now Brooking.
04:57Blasted and fouled it again.
04:59Holland is right up there too.
05:00Good sweeping attack by West Ham this.
05:02And Brooking has taken it just a shade too far.
05:05And Lyons turned it back to Dye Davis.
05:23Dobson for Pearson.
05:26Here's Latchford.
05:28Found Telfer.
05:32Now Dobson with a shot.
05:35Cannoned off Kevin Locke.
05:38Oh, and Dye had to kick it away.
05:39And it was handball.
05:42Well, West Ham were in a bit of trouble there.
05:44And they were saved really when Dye had to fly-hack that one away off balance.
05:48And it hit Pearson who was on the ground.
05:52On the hand.
05:55Well, they're getting good crowds here at West Ham.
05:57And that's a good vantage point for those youngsters.
05:58McDowell now with the throw.
06:04Long one.
06:06Best is there.
06:07Can Padden get in?
06:09Maybe Lampard can.
06:10No, Pearson is there first.
06:13But Lampard finds Brooking.
06:18He's all right.
06:19He's onside.
06:20A chance for Lampard.
06:21Oh, and he's hit it over.
06:22Well, what a miss that was.
06:28At least it looked easy.
06:30As the Everton defence came forward thinking they were going to catch everybody offside.
06:34The linesman kept his flag down and Lampard was free.
06:37He tried really an ambitious lob.
06:39And it was too high.
06:47Well, Davis will breathe a bit easier after that.
06:58And McDowell plays it back today.
06:59Oh, the crowd still buzzing with that miss by Lampard.
07:11Throw to West Ham.
07:12Keith Robson.
07:23Davis catching well as Holland came in.
07:29Lions.
07:30To Buckley.
07:31Holland's after him.
07:32Played it fairly.
07:33Padden, Jinking, looking for a yard.
07:36And finds Billy Vance.
07:37Crowd now getting behind West Ham.
07:40Their skipper on the ball.
07:41Clyde Best playing a one-two with Billy Vance.
07:43Can he get a shot in?
07:44Well.
07:47It was not handball, said the referee.
07:53Tom Reynolds, well placed.
07:56As that ball came in.
07:58And hit Roger Kenyon.
07:59No penalty given.
08:04Billy Vance turning it back.
08:06Now it's with Lampard.
08:20Oh, Holland took something there from Mick Lyons.
08:28Some of this Everton tackling at the moment is tough to say the least.
08:31Here's Brooking.
08:34Oh, a nice little chip by him.
08:36Billy Vance right in.
08:37Oh, on earth did Vance miss that.
08:40He arrived late.
08:43Stealthily and without Everton being aware.
08:46As Brooking, with no room at all, crossed that in so delicately.
08:50And Vance made contact.
08:52But not quite positively enough.
08:54Just wide of the far post.
08:56But a brilliant piece of improvised football by West Ham.
09:05Here's Brooking.
09:06The man who made that chance.
09:09Buckley.
09:11Certainly in terms of a spectacle, I think we need a go.
09:14Now, probably from West Ham to force Everton to come out and attack a little more.
09:19Jones.
09:24Brooking thumping that one away as Jones goes down.
09:29Oh, that was a very severe challenge there by Lyons.
09:32And Holland is taking it into his own hands, which is a silly thing to do.
09:36And Padden is saying, get away from that.
09:38That was a terrible challenge there by Lyons.
09:40And he'll have to go to the referee.
09:43A bad challenge.
09:45It certainly won't have impressed Don Reavy in the stand, who's here watching this game today.
09:48And I would have thought Mick Lyons is one of the people he'll watch.
09:50His name will go into the book for that.
09:52And Holland might well find that his goes in as well for retaliating.
09:57Tom Reynolds having a very strong word as well with a West Ham player.
10:00You can understand Holland's frustration.
10:02But he really must not take the law into his own hands.
10:05Lyons goes into the book.
10:07And I think Tom Reynolds is probably saying, yours has got to go in as well, Pat Holland.
10:12And there's nothing I can do about it.
10:13The name goes into the book.
10:15Well, I wonder what Don Reavy thought of that.
10:19Alan Wade, the coaching chief on the right of the FA, smiles.
10:23I don't think there are too many smiles elsewhere.
10:26At least it looked like a smile.
10:30Robson to Brookings.
10:31Best has gone deep.
10:32Holland's gone towards the near post.
10:36It's Clyde Best going in.
10:37Again, beaten in the air, though.
10:38Robson with a shot.
10:39Oh, no matter than a foot wide.
10:44But in fact, an offside decision given.
10:48Robson hitting that very, very well indeed.
10:53But an offside.
10:53As the whistle goes for half-time.
11:00Fervinday then collects up his belongings.
11:03And West Ham and their fans pondering how it was, I suppose, that Frank Lampard missed that goal.
11:08And one of the reasons they haven't had too many scoring chances, West Ham,
11:11is some brilliant defence by Everton.
11:13And particularly by their captain and number five, Roger Kenyon.
11:16A lot more to come on the big match this afternoon.
11:19But a half-time score then at Upton Park.
11:21That reads West Ham nil, Everton nil.
11:24We'll be right back with the second half.
11:38Welcome back to Upton Park then.
11:40As West Ham get us away, now attacking the goal to our right.
11:43After a goal this first half.
11:44In fact, this game has got quite a pedigree of goals.
11:48It finished 3-2 to Everton last season.
11:50And 4-3 to West Ham the season before.
11:53So maybe things are going to brighten up a little bit in the second half.
11:56Although, in fact, Everton's scoring record is less than impressive.
11:58They've scored only two in their last five games.
12:00They've conceded only three in their last six.
12:03But here's Brooking now.
12:05As Robson tries to get a diving header in.
12:07And Clements hammers it away again.
12:13That's the second ball on the pitch.
12:14A blue balloon.
12:16Bonds.
12:18McDowell.
12:19Good skill there by McDowell.
12:21Now Brooking, can he get the shot in?
12:28Thought about it, maybe a little too hard.
12:31Decided that he would try just that looping, curling shot.
12:35Way off the target.
12:48Lampard winning it well in the air.
12:50Billy Bonds.
12:54Here's Brooking.
12:54Bonds has continued his run, but he's taken Everton defenders with him.
12:59Robson.
12:59Oh, nicely played by Robson for Brooking.
13:14Played on for Bonds.
13:15And little Buckley was there to beat big Billy Bonds.
13:22And find Martin Dobson.
13:25Gary Jones.
13:27Buckley looking for a return pass as well.
13:29Jones now taking it on for Everton.
13:32And still going on for Everton.
13:34He's left McDowell behind him.
13:35And Pearson with a chance off.
13:38Day was already tumbling and Pearson didn't get the right sort of touch.
13:41As Jones left McDowell and turned it in.
13:48And Pearson didn't really hit it well.
13:51And Day went down to save.
13:57Brooking.
13:58Highland, a nice touch there for Best.
14:00But just watch those tangerine shirts closing in again.
14:04Sargent getting it away.
14:05Latchford first to react to it.
14:08Pearson.
14:09Dobson.
14:18Buckley.
14:20Sargent.
14:26Mick Lyons.
14:30Hit low towards Pearson.
14:32Lampard away.
14:34Comes to Clyde Best.
14:36Well, they pushed a few people up that time, Everton.
14:38And now they might get caught out if Holland can get past Clements.
14:42No foul there, said the referee.
14:44Play on.
14:46And now can Holland get past him?
14:47No.
14:47And he's got a corner for West Ham.
14:49So, Best arriving.
15:01Taylor's there.
15:03Padden will curl another corner in.
15:07Towards McDowell.
15:09Taylor again.
15:10Taylor again.
15:13Played wide for Brooking.
15:17Still at Brooking.
15:17This could be interesting.
15:20No!
15:20Oh, my goodness.
15:21It was a backheeler by Holland that nearly went in.
15:24And Lampard now.
15:27Curled right across the face of the goal again.
15:29But an offside flag was up.
15:31Well, that was remarkable after Brooking did so well on that byline and crossed it in.
15:35And it came to Pat Holland and he backheeled it and somehow it was scramble away from that Everton line.
15:43Pat Holland so close to giving West Ham the lead.
15:46Pat Holland.
15:59Latchford's header.
16:01George Telfer.
16:05Jones.
16:09Free kick.
16:13Probably looked worse than it was.
16:15The referee taking the point, though, and having a quick, quiet word with John McDowell.
16:23Dobson.
16:25Clements.
16:29Dobson.
16:36Buckley.
16:39Ball in play, and Buckley did very well indeed there for Everton.
16:42McLions was right up there.
16:52Sargent.
16:56Tilfer.
17:09Buckley.
17:12Gary Jones trying his luck on the far side now.
17:17Well, that was obstruction, said the referee, and that's why Gary Jones nudged Graham Patton in the back.
17:23So a free kick to Everton.
17:27Of course, when a side defence for so long is pushed back onto defence, they very often sneak out and get a decisive goal.
17:36And that's what Gary Jones has done there.
17:401-0 to Everton.
17:43Entirely against the run of the play.
17:46And Gary Jones, the man who was fouled in the first place, the free kick came over.
17:50Slack marking by the West Ham defence, Gary Jones header.
17:53Past Mervyn Day, West Ham 0, Everton 1.
17:57The scorer, Gary Jones.
18:00And that only is second goal of the season.
18:03Well, as I was saying, it does so often happen.
18:08That a side gets a little bit lax when it has so much of the game and attacks so often that it can get caught with a sucker punch.
18:18And that's what West Ham were caught with there.
18:19Their marking was not above reproach in that situation.
18:24And now they've got a lot of work to do against a side that has conceded only three goals in its last six games.
18:31And has won four on four of the last eight visits here to Upton Park.
18:37Everybody now back for Everton, bar George Telfer.
18:41And West Ham now with something like 26 minutes to get themselves back in the game.
18:48And above all, of course, to save their unbeaten league record.
18:54Goal kick.
19:04Rick Lyons.
19:11Now blocking.
19:13Now pardon.
19:18Robson.
19:21Robson.
19:23Flicked on again for Padden.
19:25There's the chance for him and he didn't take it and Clemens was there to hammer it away.
19:29The ball just wouldn't drop for Graham Padden there.
19:32And here he is again.
19:34All the tricks over his head.
19:37Clyde Best is waiting and so too is Kenyon.
19:39And so too is Lampard.
19:44And you sense also now there's a touch of anxiety about West Ham's play coming forward.
19:48And one of the most unpopular men in the field or at least in the stadium must be the Everton manager Billy Bingham there saying to calm down and yet he's organised this Everton side so well in defence.
20:01And there's a touch on the field.
20:02And here he is.
20:03And here he is.
20:07Buckley not being thrown off the centre at all by all those shimmies by Trevor Brookings.
20:14But a throw to West Ham.
20:16Robson.
20:21Crossed well.
20:22Can Holland get in?
20:25Now what's been given?
20:26A corner?
20:28Yes a corner.
20:32Ball coming off the back of Dave Clements.
20:36West Ham crowd again getting behind their team.
20:41And Padden again with this corner for West Ham.
20:43Hit low this time.
20:44Sargent obligingly putting it back to Padden.
20:48And again Padden hitting Sargent with it.
20:50And Padden now with another chance.
20:52That time it's a shot.
20:57And again West Ham have cracked that ball across that Everton penalty area.
21:03And again just for the want of the tiniest touch.
21:06It's gone away.
21:08And West Ham get nothing.
21:14Bonds.
21:15Finding Lampard.
21:16And it's going to be Jim Pearson who's going to go off.
21:17Who may not know it yet but the number four card is out.
21:18Yes now he will know it.
21:19Because the card is up for Pearson to see.
21:20He goes off.
21:21And Ken McNaught is on.
21:22And Ken McNaught is on.
21:24And the next one is in line with the third whip in the second half.
21:28And it's going to be Jim Pearson who's going to go off.
21:29And close the front.
21:32And the fourth whip in the third half.
21:33And the third one is R.
21:35And the fourth one is in the second half.
21:36He goes off.
21:38And Ken McNaught is on.
21:39Another Everton throw.
22:06Taking a long time over these throws.
22:09Lions.
22:14A throw to Everton.
22:18Alan Taylor's coming down now on towards the touch line.
22:21He's going to be coming onto the field as a substitute in a moment.
22:24But at the moment, Everton, the crowd has seen him.
22:28It's a corner.
22:31And he'll be on in a moment.
22:33Rob Jenkins there getting out of the bench there to try and
22:36attract the referee's attention.
22:41It's George Telfer with the corner for Everton.
22:45Curled deeper this time towards McNaught.
22:50Oh, and hit it off the line by Frank Lampard.
22:54Great header there by McNaught.
22:56And touched on again.
22:58And Lampard eventually got it away.
23:00Now it's McDowell.
23:03Played on for Padden but not accurately enough.
23:07Dave Clements to Bob Latchford.
23:22Tellfer.
23:23Stopped by McDowell.
23:24And away goes Brookings.
23:25He's got Best up as well.
23:26Brookings going on past that challenge of Kenyon.
23:27And he had to hold onto it.
23:28Because he could see that Best was offside.
23:29And Kenyon is down and he's injured.
23:31Now it's Robson.
23:32A chip in there.
23:38And finally McNaughton's got it away.
23:40McDowell again.
23:41Past the injured Kenyon.
23:43Lampard on the far side deliberately handling the ball.
23:46a chip in there, and finally McLion's got it away, McDowell again, past the injured Kenyon, Lampard on the far side, deliberately handling the ball, and it's Clyde Best who's coming off,
24:04and Alan Taylor on, well he's got six goals this season, and West Ham desperately won number seven now,
24:22will it come for Brookings, well he made it come for him in the end, a little chip through there towards Holland,
24:28and Padden taking it on, and Davies out, to smother that very well indeed, nice little touch by Brookings, a great pounce by Padden,
24:37and some fairly brave goalkeeping too by Dye Davies, so a corner for West Ham, Brookings to take it, this one a little swing inside,
24:47too high for the ball, and here's Roger Kenyon,
24:50McNaught,
25:02Brookings,
25:05Holland,
25:09well Pat Holland's been known to get one or two important late goals in his time,
25:12trying to find Billy Bonds there,
25:17but McLion's was there before him,
25:19Lampard's still injured on the far side,
25:21trying to get himself up, good play by Locke,
25:26and a nice bit of play,
25:29and a good pass there for Padden,
25:31now for Brookings,
25:32a touch on for Billy Bonds,
25:35Dane Clements forcing him out towards the touch line,
25:38now will it come for Brookings,
25:39hit,
25:41straight at Dye Davies,
25:47John Lyle,
25:47the West Ham manager,
25:49knows that there's a matter of two minutes now,
25:51between his side and their unbeaten record,
25:53Brookings again,
25:56good ball run there,
25:57well by Robson,
25:58and now for McDowell,
25:59oh and he hit it straight,
26:02at Dye Davies,
26:04while Robson won that bravely,
26:07it was flicked on there,
26:08into the path of McDowell,
26:09and Davies narrowed the angle,
26:12sufficiently to prevent West Ham,
26:14getting a last minute equaliser,
26:17Bonds right up there,
26:21West Ham have pushed everybody in,
26:23Bonds is there,
26:24and it's over the top,
26:28well I suppose when John Lyle saw that one,
26:31cannon off the goalkeeper,
26:33he knew if he didn't know before,
26:34that it really wasn't West Ham's day,
26:36and here's Jones,
26:45no advantage there,
26:48but it doesn't matter for Everton in any case,
26:50because West Ham's unbeaten league record has gone,
26:53Everton have come here,
26:54they've defended,
26:54and they've scored the killer goal,
26:56with a sucker punch,
26:58Gary Jones the number 11,
27:00was the man who got it,
27:00but that header,
27:01in the second half,
27:03after West Ham,
27:05had had so much more of the game,
27:06a frustrating afternoon for them,
27:08and for their fans,
27:09but victory for Everton,
27:11their fifth victory here,
27:12at Upton Park in the last nine visits,
27:14and a final score line then,
27:16at Upton Park,
27:17reads West Ham nil,
27:19Everton one.
27:21Well after that game,
27:22various people said various things,
27:24the West Ham team manager,
27:25John Lyle,
27:26very rational indeed I thought,
27:27said that the defeat was acceptable,
27:29because it would make his players think again,
27:31Ron Greenwood paid tribute,
27:32to the skill that Everton showed in defence,
27:35and the former boxing champion,
27:36Henry Cooper had this to say,
27:37when he was asked to name,
27:38the man of the match.
27:39Well I give it to Frank Lampard,
27:41I think,
27:41because you know,
27:42what I see him do,
27:43he done well,
27:43he was like an old,
27:45I like to see an old head on,
27:46you know,
27:46young shoulders,
27:47he was,
27:47I could see him,
27:48especially in one half there,
27:50he was back there,
27:51marching in the old defence,
27:53getting them straightened up,
27:53you know,
27:54and I think he laid a few good balls,
27:56on in defence,
27:57and in attack,
27:58he was up front as well,
27:59you know.
27:59Well here is the man of the match,
28:01in Henry Cooper's book,
28:02Frank Lampard,
28:03didn't like the bit about the old head on young shoulders,
28:05frankly do you?
28:06Not really no.
28:06But he's a bit too big to argue with really.
28:08I thought so.
28:09But what did you,
28:10what did you think of your own performance yesterday?
28:13Erm,
28:13quite satisfied really,
28:14erm,
28:15the goal,
28:16the miss,
28:16if it had gone in,
28:17it would have ran it off me really.
28:18The lob in the first half,
28:19would have been found there.
28:22The fact that Don Reavy was there,
28:23and obviously people sort of draw all sorts of conclusions,
28:26and one would think that you're the sort of player he'd be looking at,
28:28does that put an extra pressure on you?
28:31Erm,
28:31you're,
28:32you know,
28:32I was aware that he was there.
28:34But, erm,
28:35I think you're good,
28:36you know,
28:36you've just got to go out and play your own game,
28:37you know,
28:38if possible.
28:39Yeah.
28:39How frustrating was it playing against that Everton defence yesterday?
28:43They played very well,
28:44they played very well,
28:45you know,
28:45defensively,
28:46everybody worked back for them.
28:48And, er,
28:48it was very hard to break down,
28:49you know,
28:49give them credit,
28:50they played very well at the back.
28:51Yes.
28:52In fact,
28:52talking to John Lyle afterwards,
28:54I was asking how a defence like that could be broken down.
28:56He was talking about filling space and so on,
28:58which bamboozled me,
28:59but I'm sure not you.
29:01But he made the point about if players arrive late to various situations,
29:04they shake off their markers.
29:05And we've got a couple of examples of that to show you and get your views on.
29:09And the first one,
29:10when Trevor Brookings sets up a chance for Billy Bonds,
29:12who does just what John Lyle wanted here.
29:16Trevor,
29:16in fact,
29:16turns this in.
29:17And this,
29:18I think,
29:18is what John meant about people arriving late.
29:20You'll see Frank when he comes in,
29:22that he's shaken off those two Everton defenders.
29:25And unfortunately for West Ham,
29:27Billy Bonds didn't quite get the touch.
29:28But you see,
29:28he's lost all the markers there,
29:30hasn't he?
29:31And then there was this other incident right at the end.
29:33Again,
29:33Trevor Brookings making a chance.
29:34Tell us about this one for John McDowell.
29:36John was a bit unlucky.
29:38As the ball came to him,
29:39I think he just pushed it on a bit too far in front of him.
29:42But again,
29:42he's shaken everybody off.
29:43Yeah,
29:44he's in space and the cable just came out and narrowed the angle.
29:48He didn't done very much for the cable.
29:49There wasn't much John could do there,
29:50I think.
29:52You would have got that point yesterday.
29:53I hate to elaborate on it,
29:55but the chance that it in fact fell to you.
29:58And when you look at it again now,
29:59and you've seen it again today,
30:02I wonder if there's anything about it that's different
30:04than it appeared to you yesterday.
30:05Here it comes now,
30:06Frank.
30:06And in fact,
30:07you know,
30:07it's incredible how quickly you made up the ground here,
30:10having challenged there on Jim Pearson.
30:12You're picking yourself up
30:13and the next we see you is there.
30:16Now,
30:16what about it is different today?
30:18It looks farther out than I realised.
30:22Maybe I could have took it round the keeper.
30:25But,
30:25you know,
30:25the lob was on,
30:26I made it in mind early.
30:27It's a lob.
30:28And,
30:28it didn't come off.
30:31You were a bit heavy on the lob there,
30:33but you say you were further out today
30:35than you thought you were.
30:36looking on there,
30:37I would think that,
30:38you know,
30:38probably you could either lob it
30:39or even took it round the keeper.
30:41Yeah.
30:42But those chances only come once,
30:43don't they?
30:44They're so easy up in the stand.
30:45Sure, sure.
30:48The goal that Everton scored,
30:50there was a touch of mystery about that
30:52because I think most people
30:53on our side of the ground
30:54felt that it was a minor deflection,
30:56but it had to go to Gary Jones.
30:57But as we look at it again now,
30:59you've got no doubts,
31:00of course,
31:01that it was an own goal
31:01by John McDowell.
31:02Yeah,
31:03yeah.
31:03John was unlucky,
31:04actually.
31:06Actually,
31:06as Gary Jones connects you,
31:07you'll see that the ball
31:08was going outside.
31:08That's right,
31:09yeah,
31:09yeah.
31:10It just reactions from John,
31:11it just hit him on the fire,
31:12went in.
31:15And John has accepted
31:16that's an own goal?
31:17I wouldn't know.
31:19I don't know.
31:20I'm not saying.
31:22What about West Ham this season now?
31:24You've started so well.
31:26Do you feel you've got the quality
31:27in the club now
31:28to go on,
31:30not only in the First Division Championship,
31:31but in the Cup Winners' Cup as well?
31:33Yeah,
31:33we're a young side.
31:34You know,
31:35we're learning all the time.
31:36But I think we'll do very well.
31:39We've started off good enough,
31:40so we can keep going.
31:42Well,
31:42I think you've done enough
31:43to certainly take the eye
31:45of Don Revy yesterday,
31:46Frank.
31:46I hope so in any case,
31:47and thank you very much indeed
31:48for coming in today.
31:49Thank you very much.
31:49Thanks a lot, Frank.
31:58Well,
31:58our second match today,
31:59and it's one that had
32:00a dramatic finish to it,
32:01Coventry City
32:02against Burnley.
32:04It also showed
32:04what a tough old game
32:05it can be,
32:06because you're going to see
32:07the Coventry winger
32:07Tommy Hutchison
32:08receive a terrible shin injury
32:09that required stitches,
32:11and remember he came back
32:12to play again
32:13later in the game.
32:13Pictures from ATV,
32:15commentator Hugh Johns,
32:16Coventry City
32:16in the snazzy strip
32:18of light blue.
32:22Comes rather fortuitously
32:24for Craven.
32:26Ferguson.
32:27Craven.
32:28Holmes.
32:32Brogan.
32:32Brogan.
32:35Hutchison.
32:37Ooh.
32:39Lucky, that was a very solid one
32:41from Mick Doherty.
32:43And the way
32:43referee Dave Wallace
32:45is walking across to Doherty,
32:46he's got that book out.
32:50Really was a very,
32:52very solid whack.
32:53So Doherty goes into the book.
33:00Well, the agony there
33:02on Tommy Hutchison's face,
33:03there's no acting going on there.
33:06Really is in pain.
33:07That's, that's a stud that's done that.
33:15And that looks very much
33:16as though it's going to need stitches.
33:17That is an open wound
33:19in Tommy Hutchison's right leg.
33:23And clearly the doctor
33:25is going to be needed
33:26to do something about that.
33:27Well, that really is a
33:36frightening sight.
33:38A frightening sight.
33:41Some of it.
33:45Nobody told him it was there.
33:48Mortimer.
33:51Mortimer again.
33:52Oh, the tackle coming
33:53from Newton that time.
33:54Flynn.
33:55Newton.
33:57James.
34:00Flynn.
34:04Thompson.
34:05Referee aligned.
34:06Advantage and Hankin
34:07in with a chance.
34:09Point blank.
34:09Save it again.
34:10And he's got it there.
34:12Ray Hankin has done it.
34:131-0 Burnley.
34:1711 minutes.
34:18End of the game.
34:21And 1-0 Burnley.
34:23All stemming very much
34:26by referee Wallace
34:27allowing the advantage
34:28to run to Burnley.
34:31And the Hankin
34:32was unmarked
34:33in the edge
34:34of the penalty area.
34:35King did tremendously well
34:36to parry a first-time drive
34:38but had no chance
34:39with the second one.
34:40go back.
34:42Go back!
34:44So they're without Hankin
34:45and there goes
34:47Hutchison's legs again.
34:50Case of double 11
34:51that time.
34:53Leighton James
34:53on Tommy Hutchison.
34:54Hutchison with the cap
35:03Far post ball
35:05And they all come rushing in
35:06And they've lost it
35:06And there's Cross for the equaliser
35:09Burnley absolutely stunned by that one
35:1322 minutes into the second half
35:17Cross has made it 1-1
35:19The Burnley players will be questioning
35:22Whether Stevenson was bundled
35:25Or whether their own inefficiency
35:27Allowed the ball
35:29That cross ball coming in from Hutchison
35:30To drop amongst them
35:31And for Cross to knock it into the net
35:35Solid section of injury time in the first half
35:39And it would appear that the Lionsman
35:45Has spotted Brian King
35:46Stepping outside his
35:48His goal here in the penalty area
35:51When he kicked that ball from hand
35:54Well, as we go into injury time
35:57This would be an incredible moment
35:59For Brian King to have
36:02Innocently committed an error
36:04Which could lead to Burnley
36:06Snatching something out of the game
36:09Snatching an extra point out of the game
36:11Flynn and Newton
36:16James moving about behind
36:22The wall not 10 yards back
36:27Wall still not 10 yards back
36:32It's far enough
36:33And the shot for James
36:39Deflection in the net
36:41Leighton James
36:45Second minute of injury time
36:48Dramatically
36:49Snatches this victory here
36:52It's got to be now for Burnley
36:54All coming back from a Lionsman signal
36:58Who said that Brian King was outside
36:59His penalty area when he kicked the ball upfield
37:02The free kick
37:03Flynn took
37:04Knocks it across
37:06James gave it
37:07Real hammer
37:08King hurled himself
37:10Got his fingers to it
37:11And it goes in off the post
37:12Well, let's clear up a couple of points
37:15And first
37:16Did the Coventry goalkeeper Brian King
37:18Move outside the area
37:19With the ball in his hand
37:20When he made that clearance
37:21A handballing offence
37:22That led to that last minute free kick
37:23And the Burnley winner
37:25Here's Brian King coming out
37:26And you can see as he drops the ball
37:28Out of his hands
37:29Clearly still inside the penalty area
37:32So maybe you could say
37:34On the evidence of that
37:35That Burnley were more than a little fortunate
37:38To get their first away win
37:39Of the season
37:40Another point too
37:42About that tackle by Mick Doherty
37:44Son of Tommy Doherty of course
37:46On Coventry's Tommy Hutchison
37:47For which he was booked
37:48As we look at that one again
37:50I get a distinct impression
37:51That Doherty went for the ball
37:53And Frank Lampard was saying
37:54That the little flick that Hutchison makes here
37:56Is the sort of flick that he very often made
37:58When playing against him
37:59Here comes that little flick
38:00As Hutchison flicks it away
38:01And Doherty goes roaring in there
38:03A clumsy challenge
38:05But I don't think it was
38:06Particularly a malicious one
38:07But a very painful one
38:08For Tommy Hutchison
38:09And a lesson there
38:11For all youngsters watching
38:12Do wear shin guards
38:14And that sort of thing
38:15Won't happen to you
38:15Our last match today
38:24It's Newcastle United
38:26So hard to beat on their own ground
38:27Against Tottenham Hotspur
38:29The pictures come from
38:30Tyne Tees Television
38:31The commentators Ken Wollstoneholm
38:32Spurs are in the all yellow strip
38:35And off goes MacDonald
38:43Young going with him
38:45And
38:46A corner kick
38:48And certainly
38:51Willie Young seems to have a lot to learn
38:53About First Division football in England
38:55He was really given the run around
38:57By MacDonald then
38:58Beaten hopelessly for face
39:01Burns with the corner
39:07Craig
39:12Oh he's hit the post
39:13And he's hit the post again
39:15That was Tudor
39:16MacDonald is onside
39:19Burns
39:22Well you might not believe that
39:37But it all happened
39:38Nolte to Craig
39:45See once again Young caught
39:48On the wrong side of MacDonald
39:50Burns
39:54Burns
39:54Natchos
40:03Craig to Burns
40:08A lovely ball
40:09On a kick
40:13Nicky Burns
40:19Having a new lease of life
40:20Now he started well enough
40:21In Newcastle last season
40:22Then seemed to fade
40:23But
40:23He's now back to his best four
40:25Craig with the corner kick
40:30Natchos
40:33Tudor is there
40:35No it wasn't Tudor
40:36Yes
40:39I thought it wasn't for a start
40:42But it is Tudor
40:43And what a fine opportunist goal
40:46That was
40:47When the ball
40:48Hit very very quickly
40:49Back into the penalty area
40:50Seem to be no danger at all
40:53And Tudor moving very quickly
40:54Towards it
40:54Catches it with his head
40:56Stares it clear of
40:58Pat Jennings
40:59And so it's 1-0
41:00For Newcastle
41:01After 18 minutes
41:02They restarted with a free kick
41:04For Newcastle
41:04Taken by Hyde
41:06Craig
41:12All the
41:13Tottenham defenders
41:14Coming up
41:15To play an offside game
41:16And one of them
41:16Was hanging back
41:17And there's nobody offside
41:19And they've been caught at it
41:21And it's Gowling
41:22What a tremendous save
41:25By Jennings again
41:26Corner kick
41:27Gowling
41:32One of four men
41:34Allowed to break through
41:35Certainly Tottenham
41:41Nearly paid the penalty
41:44For playing the offside trap
41:45Most of the defenders
41:46Had moved up
41:47One hadn't
41:48And four Newcastle men
41:50Were allowed to streak clear
41:51Barraclough
41:53His first touch of the ball
41:54A corner
41:54And Mickey Burns
41:58Really getting behind that one
41:59Direction just a bit off though
42:01Certainly Pat Jennings
42:11Has lived up to his reputation
42:12So far in this match
42:13Nolte
42:15And McDonnell is onside
42:17And he's missed it
42:20One wonders how long it'll be before the substitute is brought on
42:42And there's a chance for Barraclough
42:43And he's scoring a terrible mistake
42:46By Osgood
42:48And Nolte
42:50And the Tottenham defenders are arguing that it was a foul
42:53Nolte is down
42:55Engine
42:55But Osgood and Nolte both went for the same ball
42:59Race
43:00Nolte certainly went down
43:02There was some misunderstanding between the two of them
43:05And Barraclough was able to race forward
43:07Tap the ball into the net
43:09For a simple goal
43:10Number 12
43:19Ralph Coates
43:20Nice back heel flick by Duncan
43:25But nothing coming of it
43:26Now Pratt
43:27That's it
43:28Oh-ho
43:29That was fully 35 yards out
43:32Sir John Pratt has tried a shot earlier on
43:38Now playing at left back
43:41Came on the ball
43:4135 yards out
43:43Suddenly hit it with tremendous power
43:45Bad one from Nolte
43:52And now it's Coates for Tottenham
43:54Osgood
43:57Oh and that was almost the equaliser
44:02Corner kick
44:04Good tackle by Bird on Duncan
44:07Just as I thought Duncan was going to slot the ball into the back of the net
44:10Naber with the corner
44:11That's there
44:20Well what an incredible comeback
44:27By Tottenham Hotspur
44:29Duncan the man rising to that centre front
44:32Duncan the man rising to that centre front
44:32Naber getting his head right behind the ball
44:36Giving the goalkeeper Mahoney no chance
44:39Duncan has equalised
44:40Jones and it's off the line
44:52Off the line by Kennedy
44:56And my goodness that could well have been the winner
44:59So Newcastle United now in trouble
45:07In a match they should have won a long long time ago
45:10And we leave you today reflecting on the loss of West Ham's unbeaten record in the league
45:15And to rub it in I suppose
45:17To show you just how close the hammers were to saving it
45:19Four chances here
45:20And notice how every one of them was made by that fine number ten
45:24Trevor Brooking
45:24He's alright
45:28He's onside
45:29A chance for Lampard
45:30Oh and he's hit it over
45:31Oh a nice little chip by him
45:34Billy Bonds right in
45:35Still at Brooking
45:37This could be interesting
45:38No
45:39But they're a run there well by Robson
45:42And now for McDowell
45:43Oh and he's hit it straight
45:44At Di Dovis
45:47Oh and he's hit it
46:13Oh and he's hit it
46:17Oh and he's hit it
46:19Oh and he's hit it
46:20Oh and he's hit it
46:21Oh and he's hit it
46:22Oh and he's hit it
46:23Oh and he's hit it
46:24Oh and he's hit it
46:25Oh and he's hit it
46:26Oh and he's hit it
46:27Oh and he's hit it
46:28Oh and he's hit it
46:29Oh and he's hit it
46:30Oh and he's hit it
46:31Oh and he's hit it
46:32Oh and he's hit it
