04:30I don't think that was too far-fetched.
04:35The nuclear threat was real.
04:37In our relationship with the Soviet Union, we felt very strongly that we could have gone over the edge.
04:49We almost did.
04:50When it comes to nuclear war or the threat of it, what really matters is knowing what's in your adversary's game plan.
05:06If our policy makers are operating in the blind, if they're basing their decisions on their fears, their notions of the Soviet Union that weren't valid, that could have been really dangerous.
05:22So they needed intelligence on the Soviet Union.
05:25And we weren't getting it at that time because our Soviet operations were obstructed by KGB surveillance.
05:33They were always there.
05:37So our job was to get human sources undercover on the ground in Moscow.
05:44So we were looking all around the world for Soviet recruits who were vulnerable to our approaches, to our blandishments, who we thought we could turn.
05:54And we found one in Bogota.
05:55We became aware of him through a telephone tap that CIA had on the Soviet embassy.
06:10He was doing things in Bogota that showed that he might be vulnerable.
06:14He womanized, he liked parties, he was fast and loose with money.
06:25All of those things we saw.
06:27And clearly he was not a real communist.
06:31He wasn't a true believer.
06:32So we arranged for a meeting with him in the Turkish bath in the Hilton Hotel.
06:41We started talking to him.
06:44He wanted a better life.
06:46He wanted to do something that he could really believe in.
06:49Ideologically, he was clearly on our side.
06:51He didn't like communism.
06:53He believed that the American system was superior.
06:56All those things kind of came together.
06:58We realized we could make a deal with him.
07:03And we did.
07:05And that was Alexander Ogorodnik, a foreign ministry official for the Soviet Union.
07:11And of course, the first issue that came up, we needed a code name for him.
07:15We certainly couldn't refer to him in the cable traffic as Ogorodnik.
07:20It wouldn't be secure.
07:21So right from the beginning, he became Trigon.
07:24We knew that he was scheduled to rotate back to Moscow in a very short time.
07:34That was going to be our payoff.
07:35That's where he was going to have the access that was going to make a lot of difference.
07:40But the big issue was, can we handle him after he returns home?
07:47Moscow was considered the most difficult place in the world to operate.
07:53We'd never done it before.
07:56How can we operate in Moscow under the noses of the KGB and get our job done without getting caught?
08:05In terms of risk, it was life and death.
08:08By 1974, we had recruited Trigon, a foreign ministry official for the Soviet Union.
08:24And he was scheduled to return to Moscow.
08:28Now we've got him recruited.
08:29The big issue was, can we handle him after he returns home?
08:33Moscow was considered the most difficult place in the world to go out and collect intelligence
08:41from agents on the street.
08:44In Moscow, you've got to understand the KGB was all-powerful.
08:48I spent almost 40 years in the KGB.
08:56My most important job was to watch my own citizens.
09:01I mean, dissidents, people who were, for some reason or another, unhappy.
09:06That was my job.
09:07And Moscow was the capital of the country, the headquarters of the security and intelligence.
09:17We had total control at that time.
09:19The KGB ran that city.
09:25They had virtually unlimited resources.
09:27The number of people that they threw at us in terms of surveillance and technical coverage
09:32was unbelievable.
09:36The KGB kept an eye on all foreigners who came to Moscow,
09:41plus the Soviets who had contacts with the foreign organizations.
09:47The KGB was total surveillance of everyone.
09:52They were everywhere.
09:53They controlled every institution.
09:55They had people in every housing block.
10:00At the time of the Cold War,
10:02the KGB was really the most powerful organization in the world.
10:13So once Trigon went back to Moscow,
10:15he was in a cooling-off period.
10:19He was being alert to any indications that he was under suspicion.
10:23We wanted to do that before we ran the risk of actually operating with him in Moscow.
10:29If he were captured,
10:31it was a question of survival.
10:32Well, all the traitors in the Soviet system would be just sentenced to death.
10:43You will not live anymore.
10:44It was dangerous for our people, too.
10:50But we needed that intelligence,
10:53and Trigon was our chance
10:54to show that we could operate successfully in Moscow.
10:59To do that, we had to evade KGB surveillance.
11:04And the one idea that we had was to use a woman,
11:07because we knew that the Russians did not use women for dangerous operations themselves.
11:14There were no women in my time in the Soviet intelligence or counterintelligence.
11:20They were technical personnel,
11:21providing all the necessary documents,
11:23making copies, you know, going to pick up a lunch for you.
11:27Women were thought sort of not quite reliable,
11:30so they would pick up only men, no women.
11:35We thought, let's use our male chauvinism against them.
11:38Let's find the right woman,
11:40someone who is bright and disciplined and tough
11:45and who can learn the night-area tradecraft
11:48and who can be buried deeply inside the U.S. Embassy in Moscow under deep cover.
11:54And that was Marty.
11:55In 1975, I was trained in the hot summer of Washington, D.C.,
12:04and I took Russian language.
12:06I learned how to spot surveillance on the street.
12:09I took covert pictures.
12:16She was a natural.
12:18She had a real aptitude for clandestine tradecraft.
12:21During my training, I read about Trigon.
12:27In the file, I remember reading that Trigon believed
12:30he could change his system from within.
12:34I think deep down in my heart,
12:36I really believed that I could do that, too.
12:40Because at that time,
12:42the men in CIA were the case officers.
12:46They were the people in the field.
12:48But I knew I could do as well as anyone else.
12:54She was the first woman
12:56that we had assigned behind the Iron Curtain.
13:00Marty was the breakthrough.
13:02Then it became showtime,
13:11and I became the person I had trained myself to be.
13:21When I arrived in Moscow on November 5, 1975,
13:26as that Lufthansa airplane landed,
13:30it was cold,
13:33and the snow was piled on the side of the runway.
13:39And when they opened the door,
13:41I put on my heavy coat,
13:43and I looked out at the front of the airport,
13:47and I thought,
13:47you have committed yourself to two years here
13:51working by yourself,
13:54doing this secret work on the street,
13:57in the heart of Moscow,
13:59in the heart of the world of communism.
14:02Oh, what have I done?
14:14In 1975,
14:16I was assigned to Moscow
14:18to work with a CIA covert agent
14:21called Trigon.
14:22But before I began to work with him,
14:27the most important job I had
14:29was to establish myself
14:31as a low-level administrative person
14:34within the embassy.
14:38I went to my house.
14:43I bought a car.
14:45I did whatever it was
14:47that young women in Moscow would do.
14:49And that was the role
14:53I wanted to sell
14:54to my colleagues in the embassy
14:56as well as to anyone watching me
14:58outside of the embassy.
15:02Because I knew
15:04that the KGB could be anyone there.
15:12KGB surveillance looked like ordinary Russians.
15:15They had a good mix of
15:17young, old,
15:19well-dressed,
15:21bum-like people.
15:23And they made a point
15:24of mixing up the profiles
15:25to make it hard for us
15:27to get a fix on them.
15:30Well, the KGB,
15:32it could be anyone, you know.
15:34That was just
15:34it's a matter of imagination.
15:38KGB provide these people
15:39with all the necessary equipment
15:41and camouflage
15:42if they needed it.
15:44No problem.
15:45The KGB owned the city
15:49and they followed
15:51everyone
15:52everywhere.
15:56So I didn't want
15:57to be anyone,
15:58anyone noticed
15:59so that
16:01no one suspected
16:03that I was
16:03eventually
16:04going to work
16:05with Trigon.
16:08But I also
16:09was just trying to be
16:11who I was.
16:13You have to present
16:15a person
16:15that you can sustain.
16:18And I was
16:20Party Marty.
16:21I drank
16:22Carlsberg beer
16:23and enjoyed
16:23the social scene
16:25in Moscow.
16:27That's what
16:28filled
16:28the KGB camera.
16:31I was selling
16:32that role
16:33to them.
16:34And that took
16:35maybe three
16:36or four months.
16:39Marty was
16:40comfortable
16:41in Moscow.
16:42So we realized
16:43that now was the time
16:44to begin operating.

16:50ignore her,
16:51if they will
16:52underestimate her,
16:53if they will not
16:53surveil her.
16:55Because we need
16:56to get somebody
16:56free of surveillance
16:57to handle Trigon.
16:59We need somebody

17:05in Moscow
17:06means that you
17:07get out
17:08without surveillance
17:09following you.
17:11So,
17:12to verify
17:13that I was
17:14without surveillance
17:15following me,
17:16I wore
17:17my SRR-100,
17:20a radio receiver,
17:21of the single
17:22radio frequency
17:23the KGB surveillance
17:24teams used
17:26to communicate
17:27between themselves.
17:28I had a
17:29wireless earpiece
17:31and I would
17:32listen as I
17:33drove away
17:34from the embassy.
17:36And when I
17:37was with
17:38a man,
17:40I could hear
17:46on my SR-100
17:47as the KGB
17:49reported to
17:51one another
17:51the location
17:52of this man.
17:55But,
17:56when I went
17:57out by myself,
17:59I would hear

18:26is a pre-cased
18:28hiding place
18:29where an agent
18:30can put down
18:31a concealed package,
18:34mark a signal,
18:36and then the other
18:37comes and picks up
18:38the package
18:38and marks the signal
18:39to indicate
18:40that the package
18:41had been recovered.
18:43The choice
18:44to use dead drops
18:46avoid that risk
18:47of having the two
18:47people together
18:49at any point,
18:50but they still
18:52have to be done
18:53extremely discreetly,
18:55extremely carefully.
18:57Espionage
18:58is not a game.
19:01It's a serious business.
19:03It's life and death.
19:05People get killed
19:06on both sides.
19:07In order to make
19:11Dead Drops,
19:13you have to show up
19:14at a certain place
19:15at a certain time,
19:17knowing that Trigon
19:19wouldn't have
19:20a schedule
19:21of deliveries.
19:23The only thing
19:24we could determine
19:25to do
19:26was drop
19:27a concealed message
19:28inside
19:29a cigarette lighter
19:30through the fly window
19:32of his car.

21:18lot of people
21:18that did not believe
21:20that women
21:20belonged in this business.
21:22But Marty
21:23was the perfect choice.
21:25She was
21:26a tough,
21:27disciplined,
21:29superb case officer.
21:30Her tradecraft
21:32was impeccable.
21:34She was the right
21:34person at the right time.
21:38Before Trigon
21:40returned to
21:41the Soviet Union,
21:43he asked
21:45whether we would
21:45provide him
21:46L pills,
21:49lethal pills,
21:50for him to have
21:52and use
21:53to commit suicide
21:54in the event
21:55that he was arrested.
21:56because he knew
21:59he would face
22:00a long
22:01and brutal
22:02interrogation

22:04he didn't want
22:06to have to do that.

22:26a very valuable

22:31The first package
22:33we devised
22:34to provide
22:35to Trigon
22:35was on
22:37May 1st.
22:39We have a variety
22:40of concealment devices.
22:42These concealment devices
22:43can look like
22:43a piece of brick
22:44or a dead bird
22:47or dog excrement.
22:49Something that
22:49can lie there
22:50undisturbed
22:51without attracting attention.
22:53I would put
22:54that package
22:55down for him
22:56next to
22:57a lamp pole.
22:59Trigon would
22:59have a sketch

25:26We were trying
25:28to engage
25:28in arms control
25:29talks.
25:30We were fighting
25:32for our country's
25:33security.
25:37Even with treaties
25:39people still
25:40had a button
25:42to push
25:42if things got
25:44to that point.
25:47So what's
25:48in your adversary's
25:49mind was
25:50highly important
25:51and when you're
25:53gaining the
25:54intelligence
25:54from a covert
25:55agent
25:56about that
25:57adversary
25:58then you've
25:59got the
25:59advantage.

26:04what Anatoly
26:05Dobrynin
26:05the ambassador
26:06from the
26:07Soviet Union
26:08in Washington
26:09D.C.
26:09was saying
26:10about his
26:11meetings

26:51ways away

26:53two streets
26:54there was a
26:55man standing
26:56there.

26:59thought
26:59that's Trigon
27:01waiting for
27:02the delivery
27:02of his
27:03package.
27:04He's as
27:04curious as
27:05I was.

27:11couldn't leave
